The Bureau of Mines has investigated the effect of refractory oxide additions, introduced in soluble form, on the refractory properties of 42-, 58-, and 70-pct-A1203 brick. Brick having porosities ranging from 12 to 16 pct were impregnated with solutions containing chrome, chrome-iron, zirconium, calcium, magnesium, cobalt, nickel, tin, and manganese ions. Additions of some of these ions provided dramatic improvements to such properties as hot modulus of rupture, hot load, and particularly slag resistance. These improvements can be related to reduction of porosity, amorphous grain boundary phases, formation of more refractory bond phases, and reduction of the wettability of Al203-containing refractories by metallurgical slags. Fifty-eight-percent-AI203 brick, impregnated with chrome, showed hot modulus of rupture, hot load, and slag resistance two to five times better than those of untreated 70-pct-AI203 brick. This could result in reducing the Nation's dependence on imported refractory-grade bauxite generally required for high-A1203 brick, as domestic alumina resouces could be used to produce the improved refractories.

In September 1985, the Chairman of the Transportation, Aviation and Materials Subcommittee of the House of Representatives requested that the Director of the Bureau of Mines address the issue of South Africa and critical materials dependency in testimony before the Subcommittee. Subsequent to the testimony, the Bureau has prepared a technical report focusing on the importance of South Africa and, in some cases, its neighboring countries as suppliers of six key materials. The report includes a qualitative analysis which examines the supply shortfall resulting from a potential disruption, options that are available for mitigating the impact, and their likely effectiveness, and quantitative analyses which estimate the economic impacts in the chromium and manganese markets resulting from peacetime disruption scenarios specified by the Subcommittee Chairman. The concluding section treats the role and capabilities of the Bureau of Mines in dealing with mineral supply disruptions.

"Wien bituminous coal is burned in a hand-fired up-draft boiler used for heating purposes it has a decided tendency to produce smoke. A design of furnace and a method of firing and attendance that are satisfactory for fuels low in volatile matter, as anthracite or coke, are not necessarily Satisfactory for bituminous coals. It is therefore becoming common practice to use a special design of furnace for bituminous coals, in order to facilitate the combustion of the volatile matter and soot. This is done by (1) providing a larger combustion space to give more time for the combustion, (2) construction that will produce a better mixing of the gases and secondary air supplied over the fuel bed, or (3) keeping the gases at a higher temperature by preheating the secondary air, as may be done by surrounding them with refractory surfaces, or causing them to pass through a fuel bed of hot coke. A furnace may be built to use any or all of these methods of smoke prevention.In Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 303, Blizard5 and others give tests on a large heating boiler when burning coke, anthracite, and bituminous coal. Certair alternative furnace arrangements were used, but there was no material change in the furnace design for the various fuels. Since that time the manufacturer has made modifications in design to adapt it for use of bituminous coal, and additional tests have been made to determine how this change affected the production of smoke and the efficiency of the boiler."

For some years past the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain has been making an intensive search for. materials that would be more efficient than rock dust and that could replace it wholly or in part as a moans of preventing the prorogation of coal-dust explosions in mines5/ In the course of this work several rock ducts and numerous inorganic compounds were tested. The results place incombustible substances in two main groups; (1) Those whose effect in suppressing the combustion of coal dust is proportional to their capacity for absorbing heat, and (2) those that shoo much higher effectiveness than would be expected from their heat capacity. The first group includes several inorganic compounds and materials commonly ground for use as rock dust, such as shale, gypsum, and limestone. Outstanding examples of the second group are compounds of the halogens6/ with the alkali metals,7/ especially potasium and sodium8/. British investigators term those salts "inhibitors" because it is assumed that their presence has a hindering or inhibiting effect on one or more of the chemical reactions that together constitute combustion. In other words, the action of an inhibitor is postulated as chemical rather than physical; theoretically, the effect is to prevent liberation of energy instead of to absorb energy already liberated.

Because of insufficient funds for printing, the Bureau of Mines was unable to publish its annual bulletin covering accidents at metal mines in the United States for the year 1933. A brief mimeographed summary of the principal statistical data for that year was released to the public late in 1934. Since then reports for 1934 have been received from the mining companies, and in order to avoid further delay in releasing this information to the mining industry and others interested in the prevention of accidents in mining, statistics for both years are presented in this publication with a minimum of interpretation and comment. The fatal-accident rate for the metal and nonmetallic mines (excluding coal mines) of the United States was more favorable in 1933 than in any previous year since 1911, the first year for which the Bureau of Mines obtained reports from the operators. Further progress was made in 1934, when the fatality rate was even lower than that of 1933. On the other hand, the nonfatal-accident rate, which had reached its lowest level in 1932, increased in 1933 and increased further in 1934, although not to such an extent as to prevent the rate for either of those 2 years from being better than that for any year previous to r1931.

This report is one of a series based upon investigations made and being made within the Missouri River Basin in Montana by engineers of the Bureau of Mines , Albany Branch , Mining Division . These investigations are made primarily to provide preliminary information to the Department of Interior agencies and to others concerned with planning the proposed Federal power development within the Missouri River Basin . The present report has been designed to permit public distribution of factual data obtained . The field investigations were made during the late fall of 1947 and the summer of 1948. Information on mineral occurrences in several areas in Sweet Grass County also are included in this report because of their close proximity to Park County . Practically all known metallic mineral deposits within Park County were investigated ; some nonmetallic mineral deposits also were investigated. The investigations of the metallic mineral deposits in Park County cannot be considered complete ; some long inactive mines and prospects on which little or no information is of record may have been missed . Many of the underground openings , especially at the long inactive properties , no longer are accessible ; consequently , much of the information regarding history their and development necessarily has been obtained from available Federal and State publications .

This Bureau of Mines report presents two phases of a research program to evaluate a single-entry system for longwall development. Organizations participating in the program; which began in July 1971, include the Bureau of Mines, the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration, and the University of Utah, working under a cooperative agreement with Kaiser Steel Corp. at its Sunnyside mine in Utah. Part 1 of this report describes the present longwall mining practice, including a brief history, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of a single-entry development system and its introduction in the United States. Part 2 of the report presents the research program; test design, instrumentation for ground and support evaluation, and the test results from the No. 2 mine. Subsequent reports will describe the research conducted in the No. 1 mine.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on many topics relating to the hazards of coal mining, increased production, and protection of the environment. One area of research that has received scant attention in recent years is that of water inflows, probably because few fatalities in the United States have been attributed to them. As mining goes deeper, the problem of water in 1ow could increase dramatically because of adjacent or overlying mines in which huge water pools are impounded. Inaccurate mine maps and ineffective barriers can constitute a serious problem for operators both from gradual inflows and sudden inrushes of water. This report describes a wide but ineffective barrier that permitted an average 240-gpm inflow to a developing mine from an adjacent mine. The anomalous geologic structure that facilitated this leakage is described, demonstrating that size, alone, is no assurance against serious leakage. Some recommendations for managing serious water inflow are included.

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Survey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. "In this report, we demonstrate that NF-KB, a ubiquitous transcription factor, plays an essential role in silica-induced inflammatory mediator production in the mouse macrophage cell line RAW 264.7. Compared to the effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), silica mediated a stronger activation of NF-KB p50/p50 homodimer at early phase of poststimulation. Furthermore, activation of NF-xB by silica and LPS appears to be mediated by different signal transduction pathways. Both silica and LPS increased mRNA expression in these cells for cyclooxygenase II, inducible nitric oxide synthase, tumor necrosis factor-a and interleukin- I a. This expression was attenuated along with the inhibition of NF-KB activation. It is well documented that exposure of alveolar macrophages to silica can initiate excessive production of inflammatory mediators and cytokines from several early response genes (1-3). At the DNA level, a common structural characteristic of these genes is the presence of one to five NF-lCB binding sequences (KB) in the 5'-flanking region (4-6). In resting cells, NF-KB is retained in the cytoplasm in an inactive form by binding to inhibitory protein known as hcBcx, hcB~. p 105 (precursor of p50) and p 100 (precursor of p52) (7-9). Upon cellular stimulation, these inhibitory proteins are proteolytically degraded or processed by certain proteases, which allows the liberated NF-KB to translocate into the nucleus as an activated form to initiate or regulate early response gene transcription by binding to its consensus element (GGGRNNYYCC)(7).In this report, we demonstrate that silica can efficiently induce NF-lCB activation in RAW 264.7 cells, and that silica displays different characteristic from LPS in the activation of NF-KB, both with respect to NF-KB subtype composition and the signal transduction pathway that leads to the activation of NF-KB. In addition, abrogation of NF-KB activation by inhibiting the protease can dramatically reduce the mRNA expression of cyclooxygenase II, inducible nitric oxide synthase, tumor necrosis factor-ex (TNF-o.) and interleukin-lex (IL-lex). These findings strongly suggest that NF-KB plays an essential role in silica-induced inflammatory mediator production in the monocyte/ macrophage cells."

This report contains the results of tests performed on three large diesel engines to determine their ability to meet selected criteria of the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration Regulations for equipment used in gassy, non-coal mines. Study efforts were first directed toward determining the types of equipment expected to be used in underground oil shale mines. Three typical engines in the 800-1200 horsepower range were then selected for testing. Intake flame arresters, exhaust scrubbers, and water jacketed exhaust system were designed and built for each engine. During testing, each engine was evaluated for its gaseous emissions output, adequacy of the exhaust gas cooling system, ability to withstand internal explosions, and adequacy of the flame arresters. Surface temperatures of the engine and exhaust cooling system were determined under full load operation.

The object of this program was to design and build a self-contained system for remote monitoring of the atmosphere in mines. The system developed uses the mine pager phone line as the primary communication channel and also has the capability of using 208 Hz in the ELF band for wireless transmission through the earth. The depth for through-the-earth transmission is expected to be about 80 to 90 meters in high conductivity soil and is limited by the noise level in the ELF band-pass filters. The underground components of the TEM System are energized by mine power through a battery charger - storage battery power supply. In the event of mine power failure the battery capacity is more than sufficient for one week's operation with interrogations every four hours.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on Fe-based alloys using Si and Al additions to reduce the Cr required for heat-resisting appli-cations. Part of this research is being done to evaluate alloys containing (8-10)Cr-(10-14)Ni-(0-8.5)Si-(0-4) Al to determine which of these alloys have austenitic structures, as well as fabrication properties and oxidation resistance sufficient to substitute for type 304 stainless steel. Based on initial results, an Fe-lOCr-11Ni-5Si alloy and an Fe-8Cr-13Ni-5Si alloy were selected for evaluation of oxidati.on, stress rupture, and tensile properties. Both alloys have oxidation resistance at 7000 and 8000 C that is better than that of type 304 stainless steel. The stress rupture strengths are less than that of type 304 stainless steel but significantly better than that of commercial heat-resisting steels with similar Cr contents. Yield strengths of the alloys were equivalent to that of type 304. Both alloys had high tensile strengths comparable to those of stainless steels that transform to martensite during straining (e.g., type 301). These alloys have weld-hot-cracking resistance comparable to that of type 304 stainless steel. This initial study shows that Si has potential as a substitute for Cr in stainless steels for heat-resisting applications.

Depletion of coals most suitable for metallurgical fuel has made necessary a general survey of coking coal reserves in the United States. These investigations were begunn 1948 at the joint request of the Munitions Board, Department of Defense, and a number of coal companies. This report, which is one in a series, by counties, describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Harlan County, Ky. From these data it is possible to determine: (a) Which coals, either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation, are chemically suitable under present standards for producing metallurgical coke, (b) Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced; and (c) Which coals cannot be considered to be potential sources of metallurgical fuel regardless of preparation.

This report on the state of the art of horizontal boring technology for underground power transmission installations was prepared by the Bureau of Mines at the request of the Department of the Interior. This paper describes the different machines and methods used in augering, impacting, pushing, drilling, and machine tunneling horizontal holes through soil and rock. A review of the borehole survey and guidance tools and techniques applicable to these methods is also given. Nonboring methods used for emplacement of power distribution and transmission lines are briefly discussed. The paper ends with a brief technical forecast, an analytical summary of the state of the art, and recommendations based on power industry needs. Horizontal boring techniques for power distribution lines installation are adequate to meet the requirements of the power industry, particularly where such burial involves relatively short distances in soil or soft rock. For burying power transmission lines, particularly in the harder rocks and over relatively long distances, horizontal boring methods are not as well advanced. Research and development as well as economic incentives to equipment manufacturers could substantially improve the state of the art. Obstacle detection and guidance systems for directing boreholes to specified targets need major improvements to meet the requirements of the power industry for underground burial of distribution and transmission lines

A process for extracting 69 percent of the vanadium from weathered Nevada dolomitic shale containing about 1 percent V205 was developed on a laboratory scale by the Bureau of Mines. The process essentially is comprised of salt roasting, leaching with dilute sulfuric acid, solvent extraction, and precipitation of vanadium as ammonium metavanadate. Carbonaceous unweathered shale was less amenable to treatment. A preliminary cost estimate for mining and processing 1,500 tons per day of weathered shale indicated a production cost of about 1 dollar per lb of V205. Considering recent sales at nearly $1. 75 per lb of contained V205, larger scale testing to obtain more definitive process design and evaluation data may be warranted.

While developments in Australia dominated the minerals industry of the South Pacific area, New Caledonia's nickel, manganese ore from New Hebrides, gold from Fiji and New Guinea, and phosphate rock from several small islands were significant in world supplies of those materials. The total value of mineral commodities produced in this area in 1965 has been estimated at about $763 million an increase of nearly 16 percent over the value reported in 1964. Increases were recorded in mineral production value with respect to that of 1964 for all of the countries except Papua-New Guinea where lower gold output resulted in a drop of about $300,000 and in the several phosphate-producing islands that collectively recorded a value decline of around $1.3 million. Exploration and development activities continued at an intensified level, not only in Australia and New Zealand but also in the British Solomons, Bougainville, and Fiji. Substantial additions to world supplies of iron ore and bauxite are assured and recent discoveries of natural gas, manganese ore, and nickel combine to give Australia a brilliant mineral outlook. Important discoveries of copper on Bougainville Island and on Vanua Levu, the north island of the Fiji group, and a gold mine on Misma Island were being developed during the year, with plans for early production underway. In New Zealand progress has been made on the New Zealand Steel Company project, and preliminary appraisal of a new titano-magnetite beach sand resource on the South Island has aroused considerable industrial interest. Extensive geophysical investigations were carried out in the British Solomon Islands and on Fiji's goldfields. The expansion program that will double output of products by New Caledonia's Société Le Nickel continued through 1965, and several foreign private companies have expressed a desire to initiate additional industries based on nickel prospects in New Caledonia.

Comprehensive world mineral industry investment data do not exist, but limited material published on aggregates of in vestment in some elements of the world mineral industry suggest a continued up-turn in the investment level, at least in market economy countries in 1989. Steel industry investments in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries are not yet available for 1989 but, as shown in table 6, increased by 22.1% in 1988, after showing a decrease of 5.2% (revised) in 1987. The pattern of investment ups and downs varied during 1988 within country blocs and economic alliances showing no particular trends. Investment in the steel industry by the United States increased by 58.3% between 1987 and 1988 and was 1 1.9% higher than the previous highest amount invested during the 1984-88 period but was still 41.5% less than the amount invested in 1983. Investment in the steel industries of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) dropped again in 1988 from the revised amount for 1987, which became the first drop after several years of steady growth in what became the expanded ECSC in 1986. This drop in 1988 was the result of lower investments by Denmark, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Nether- lands, and Spain, investments grew or remained level in Belgium, Portugal, and the United Kingdom in 1987 and 1988. A decrease in investment in the Canadian (-26.6%) steel industry was offset by in- creases registered by the members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) of 31.7%, by Japan of 19.8% by Turkey of 22.4%, and a slight increase by the nations of Latin America. If data for the world steel industry as a whole, including those of the centrally planned economy countries, were available, the same pattern presumably would be shown as that reported; that is, it would remain fairly stable, with increases in some countries being offset by decreases in others. However, the lack of comprehensive information on the centrally planned economy countries makes it impossible to determine whether the overall trend was up or down despite recorded increases or decreases in production of the materials involved. This Bureau of Mines report summarizes State severance taxes imposed on minerals and mineral fuels, provides a hypothetical example of how a State severance tax affects selected components of a firm's income statement, and uses the Bureau's Minerals Availability System (MAS) to estimate the effect of assumed changes in State severance tax rates on copper recovery cost at given levels of potential copper availability. A reduction of the rates to zero or a doubling of them results in changes in costs that are of the same order of magnitude as the cost of transporting copper to the United States from major foreign producing countries.
