This paper presents the results of the second in the series of annual canvasses on the consumption of ferrous scrap and pig iron in the United States, inaugurated in 1935 by the Bureau of Mines and published in Report of Investigations 3329. The study was undertaken in response to requests from trade organizations and others for detailed statistics on this phase of the iron and steel industry. Thus, for the first time, producers, buyers, sellers, and consumers of iron and steel scrap have had an accurate statistical picture of this important raw material As originally contemplated, the study was to be continued on an annual basis, but, owing to budgetary limitations for the fiscal year 1937-38, the Bureau may be unable to conduct the canvass for 1937.

This work was done to determine the technical feasibility of using the Pedersen process to produce cell-grade alumina and an iron byproduct from the high-silica and titania bauxites of the Pacific Northwest. Smelting of these bauxites with lime and coke at about 1,750° C in an electric arc furnace produced calcium aluminate slags in which at least 80 percent of the alumina was leachable by sodium carbonate solution. After a lime-desilication of the sodium aluminate leach liquors, neutralization of these solutions with carbon dioxide resulted in precipitation of an alumina hydrate of sufficient purity for calcination to cell-grade alumina. Recoveries of byproduct iron averaged over 90 percent; however, the iron contained about 1 percent phosphorous and would require additional refining. Additional small scale tests on these slags showed the following: (1) Titania had little effect on leachability if sufficient additional lime was added to form calcium titanate (CaO.TiO 2); (2) a slag containing about 14 percent silica required a slower cooling rate than one containing 7 percent silica for formation of high percentages of soluble aluminates; and (3) high-silica slags leached better at room temperature for long periods than at 65° C for shorter periods, but low-silica slags leached well by either method.

The Eagle Silver mine is in the Rush Valley mining district, Tooele County, Utah, and is now operated by the Hampton Mining Co. The property, originally referred to as the Argent, is reported to have been one of the first discoveries in the district. The early operators mined ore to a depth of 850 feet, at which point the property was abandoned because of excessive water. During 1905 the Honerine tunnel was driven into the area approximately 1,800 feet below the collar of the Argent shaft. This tunnel served to drain the levels above and operations were resumed. Ore deposits in the Eagle Silver mine occur in the Galena King lime-stone, a 20-to 60-foot member of interbedded quartzite and limestone in the Oquirrh formation of Pennsylvanian age. This member has been faulted along the bedding, forming the Galena King gouge. Mineralization commonly occurs in or near this gouge area in a brecciated, highly altered, pipelike zone. The known ore shoots occur in association with the breccia pipe, commonly adjacent to cross faulting and porphyry intrusions. In general, two ore shoots have been mined on the upper levels of the mine, one lying to the east and the other to the west of the breccia zone. The Bureau of Mines diamond-drilling program was begun during the latter part of 1948 and completed early in 1949. Nine holes were drilled, aggregating 852.8 feet. Sludge and core samples from mineralized sections were analyzed in the Salt Lake City laboratories. A total of 87 sludge, 71 core, and 11 chip samples was submitted for analysis.

"INTRODUCTION The Philipsburg Mining District, Granite County, Mont., has been the largest producing area for battery-grade manganese (70 percent MnO2) in the United States since the First World War. Two companies, the Trout Mining Division of the American. Machine & Meals Co., and the Moorlight Mining Co., have intermittently mined and milled 120 to 250 tons of 25-percent manganese ore per day for the production of concentrates of this grade.Investigation of the district by engineers of the Federal Geological Survey and Bureau of Mines indicated that further exploration and develop¬ment would make available additional oxide and carbonate manganese ores for milling and production of metallurgical-grade manganese. If the battery-grade producers converted their plants to the production of metallurgical-grade concentrates, their production also could be increased through greater recoveries.Until February 1, 1944, the Metals Reserve Company, through its agent, the Sunshine Mining Co., purchased milling-grade manganese oxide and carbonate are for stock-piling at Philipsburg. After that time, only carbonate ore was purchased. Based upon the assumption that the stock pile was a true cross-section sample of the producing area, metallurgical studies were made on representative samples from the Metals Reserve stock piles. Testing also was conducted on two other samples of Philipsburg oxide manganese ore obtained by engineers of the Bureau of Mines from the Little Dandy claim of the Donlan group and from the Marie mine. All ore samples tested were found to be amenable to concentration by ore-dressing methods for the production of concentrates that when sintered met Metals Reserve Company specifications for metallurgical-grade manganese."

The Bureau of Mines successfully demonstrated, on a pilot plant scale, a sodium sulfate (Na2S04) refining process for removal of copper from molten ferrous scrap. Previous tests established technical feasibility on a bench scale for achieving low copper concentrations and determining the principal factors controlling process efficiency. The pilot plant study involved a 1-ton arc furnace for melting ferrous scrap and a 1-1/2-ton treatment ladle. Results of these tests showed that copper removals obtained in laboratory tests (approximately 40 relative percent copper removal with 10 weight-percent surface addition of sodium sulfate) could be achieved on the pilot plant scale when excess carbon was added with the sodium sulfate compacts. Data were obtained on temperature losses and carbon consumption related to Na2SO4 treatment.

For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has been studying the properties of crude petroleums produced in the United States and the Western Hemisphere. A number of reports have been published giving the analyses of crudes from the different fields and regions as made by the Bureau of Mines Hempel method of analysis.4 Several of these reports include analyses of crude oils from the Rocky Mountain region.5/ The search for new fields and new producing horizons in old fields in the Rocky Mountain region has been quite intensive during the last few years, and a number of discoveries have been made.

This Investigation of the preparation characteristics of the coals in Armstrong County, Pa., is the third in a series of Bureau publications by counties appraising the practicability of upgrading marginal deposits to metallurgical standards. Earlier investigations covered the washing characteristics of the coals occurring in Cambria County, and the principal reserves remaining in Indiana County. In Armstrong County, the Upper Freeport bed is the major source of production, the Lower Kittanning bed being of secondary importance. The Lower Freeport bed is mined to some degree, but it is usually too thin and spotty in occurrence to support large-scale operations. The remaining production is taken from the Pittsburgh, Middle Kittanning, and Upper Kittanning beds, but the quantities are insignificant. Table 1 shows the county's coal production) by beds, during 1948. The coals of Armstrong County are not generally considered to be of metallurgical quality because of the high sulfur content. The raw coals usually analyze more than 2 percent sulfur, and more than 4 percent sulfur is not uncommon, especially in the Lower Kittanning bed.

The first paper, reporting data relative to gravity, vapor pressure, and distillation range of the samples, was published as Report of Investigations 3129. The second report dealt with the data of the twenty-third survey in accordance with the revised specifications for United States Government Motor Gasoline. These data were published as Report of Investigations 3142.

"The mechanism of bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis is not ye: clear. Recent studies have shown that alveolar macrophages (AM) can be stimulated by bleomycin in vitro releasing inflammatory cytokines, suggesting that the interaction of bleomycin with AM is an important step in the drug-induced fibrotic process. Bleomycin is known to bind DNA and generate oxygen radicals through complexation with Fe2+ and oxygen. To provide,more insight into the cellular oxidative property of bleomycin, v.s have developed a fluoromicroscopic method using 2',7'-dichlorofluorescin diacetate (DCFHDA) as an oxidative fluorescence probe to study the deomycin-induced intracellular oxidation in rat AM and the inhibition of the oxida¬tion by taurine, a compound known to inhibit the bleomycin-induced fibrosis. Bleomycin at 5 to 20 ug/ml has a moderate stimulatory effect (1.87- to 2.66-fold) on the secretion of superoxide anion. A high concentration of bleomycin (20 ug/ml), however, inhibits cell response to zymosan-induced secretion of superoxide anion. At 4 ug/ml, bleomycin has no effect on cell membrane integrity or morphology but results in a significant increase in intracellular oxidation. This oxidative process is Fe2-,-dependent and is accompanied by an increase in intracellular calcium (35 nM). Both the intracellular oxidation and calcium rise induced by internalized bleomycin are inhibited by pretreatment of cells with varying concentrations of taurine (25, 125, and 187.5 uM). The inhibitory effect on intracellular oxidation .vas found to be 36, 57, and 60%, respectively. These results demonstrate a stimulation-inhibition relationship between bleomycin and taurine on re cellular oxidation at a subcytotoxic dose of bleomycin, suggesting that the oxidative effect of the intracellular bleomycin-Fe2 complex is important in the initiation of the fibrotic process. — Environ Health Perspect 102 (Suppl10):91-96 (1994) IntroductionThe pulmonary system is most susceptible to oxygen radical-induced diseases due to its constant exposure to the highest oxygen tension, and the potential encounters with oxidant gases such as ozone, nitrogen oxides, and toxic doses of dust particles. Ten composite samples of Mesabi Range nonmagnetic taconite from the Hibbing, Minn., area were evaluated by flotation and by reduction roasting-magnetic separation to determine their potential as a future source of iron are. Only one of the composites yielded concentrates that could be considered marketable, using as a criterion a 10-to-1 iron-to-silica ratio. Cursory petrographic examinations of all 10 composited samples and a detailed mineralogical study on 1 sample suggest that unfavorable mineralogical associations between iron and gangue minerals are responsible for their poor beneficiation characteristics.

"Interest in the fine structure of soots and carbon blacks is motivated by a variety of possible applications. The structure provides information on the origins of the particles and on their adsorptive and reactive properties. This paper describes a method for quantification of the structure of soots and carbon blacks based on direct electron microscopic observation followed by image analysis of these materials. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) provides a very detailed observation of particle structure. The differences in soot structure, because of its complexity, may not be easily quantifiable with the human eye; therefore, high-level computer software has been used to manipulate HRTEM images. This technique involves the application of fast Fourier transforms (FFT) to single particles and the measurement of characteristic parameters such as interplanar spacings and crystallite sizes from these particles. The methodology and application of this characterization technique are presented here. Results are shown for dif¬ferent samples obtained from soot and carbon black particles selected to illustrate the capabilities of the methodology. Quantitative information can be obtained on structural characteristics, e.g., interplanar spacing, circularity, orientation, elongation, and length distribution of lattice fringes, as well as on the fractional coverage of the extracted pattern. c 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.This paper presents a combination of techniques for recognizing and classifying different carbonaceous materials, using their structural morphology. A new method to assess and quantify the parameters which define such structures is proposed and discussed. The technique is based on the use of HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) and computational image analysis.It is well-known that carbonaceous materials like graphite, soots, coals, cokes, chars, etc. possess characteristic structural appearances which can vary from mostly random or amorphous to a perfectly ordered graphitic crystalline structure (Buseck and Bo-Jun, 1985; Buseck et al., 1987). The carbon structure has been variously described as turbostratic (Oberlin, 1989) or as crumpled sheets (Rouzaud et al., 1991) to indicate that parallel layering, reminiscent of graphite, is observed over dimensions of nanometers, but that these planes or crystallites show disorder over larger scales. The degree of order of such structures is strongly dependent on the thermal treatment of the material as well as on the composition of the source of the carbonaceous material. The value of the electron microscope in studying the morphology of such materials has been well-established, and abundant information is available (Ishiguro et al., 1991; Lahaye and Prado, 1978; Buseck, 1992).The use of HRTEM has brought further insight into this matter. Qualitative assessment of the structural order of such materials has been attempted over a long period of time in order to differentiate between various sources or treatments. There is, to date, no successful method available for quantifying the structural characteristics of various carbonaceous materials. This paper presents a technique which is able to recognize dif-ferent materials and to quantify the structural parameters of those materials using HRTEM and computational image analysis, including pattern recognition techniques.In the case of perfectly ordered graphitic crystals, electron diffraction is widely used for obtaining details on structure. Analysis of diffraction patterns can reveal parameters such as interplanar spacing, d002, crystallite size along the c-axis, Lc, crystal size in the plane of the layers, L., mean number of crystallites, Nc, etc.Complicated electron microscopy methods such as defocusing, tilted illumination, axial illumination, etc., often have to be used in order to characterize complex materials such as randomly oriented crystals in soots and carbons. Pure talc is a hydrous magnesium silicate (Mg3Si4010(OH)2). Pyrophyllite, although it resemble: talc in certain physical properties and uses, is a hydrous aluminum silicate (Al2Si4010(OH)2) - like kaolin, except that kaolin has a somewhat different composition (Al2Si205(OH)4) and structure. Soapstone can be considered essentially an impure talc grid when pulverized is used for many of the same purposes as talc. Massive, compact varieties of talc often are called steatite. PROPERTIES Talc and pyrophyllite are characterizes; by their softness (hardness on Mohs' scale, 1) their greasy feel, pearly luster, white color, and perfect basal cleavage. They have similar crystal structures, and this similarity explains the close resemblance of the two minerals in physical acid chemical properties. Talc is a good electrical insulator, resists the action of most acids and alkalies, and has an exceptional heat-retaining capacity. Its specific gravity is about 2.7.

That fatalities from mine explosions can be very much reduced from the experience of past years if not wholly eliminated was fairly well demonstrated during the fiscal year ended June 30 , 1934 , there being only 28 deaths in the United States from explosions during this period . This is by far the lowest number of fatalities from explosions in the history of coal mining in the United States insofar as records are available . Although the frequency of occurrence of explosions has not decreased greatly during the past 6 years , there has been a marked decrease in severity , indicating that our coal -mining people are taking more effective precautions to prevent the spread of explosions . Pennsylvania is a good example of what may be done in reducing both the frequency and the severity of explosions ; by the adoption of up- to - date safety measures , Pennsylvania bituminous mines now have the enviable record of only one major explosion disaster in more than 5 years , and the one major explosion which did occur cost but 7 lives although 277 persons were exposed ; their lives were saved because rock- dusting prevented the spread of the flame and violence . Many of our other mining States are making definite progress in working mines without disastrous explosions and fires ; some of these , like Alabama , West Virginia , Indiana , Wyoming, and others now operating with few , if any , explosions , have had anything but a favorable record in the past .

Prior work by the Bureau of Mines demonstrated a feed preparation method that eliminates the formation of slime during leaching of calcined kaolinitic clay and makes leached residues fast settling and easy to filter. Nitric acid leaching rates determined for calcined kaolinitic clay prepared by this method were found to correspond to a zero-order reaction model for both batch and continuous, stirred-tank leach-ing. A rate constant of 0.136 min-1 was determined. Separation of solid residues from the reacted slurry was examined, and filtration rates were determined. Permeabilities of the flocculated, leached residues were around 51 darcys, or 5.0 x 10-7 cm2 for laminar flow through 4-ft-deep beds.

The linear cutting system, developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, uses geometric principles developed by Cardan to produce a nearly constant cut depth. The new system has been extensively tested in a synthetic material under laboratory conditions to verify mechanical capability and to identify operational characteristics. Comparisons between 15-rpm linear cutting and 50-rpm rotary cutting systems show significant improvement in respirable dust entrainment, product size distribution, and energy usage. Respirable dust is reduced by as much as 90 pct. Recovered product showed a 67-pct reduction in -0.32-cm (-1/8-in) material and a 200-pct increase in +5.08 cm (+2 in) material. Average power was reduced by 66 pct for the linear cutting. Because the bit cutting paths differ between linear and rotary cutting, it was necessary to compare the two at the same cut depths and bit types. These comparisons show that low revolution per minute rotary cutting entrains about the same amount of respirable dust as the linear cutting system, but the average shaft torque may be 55 to 130 pct greater for the rotary system.

In a study of the principal factors affecting the transport of coal-water mixtures through a centrifugal pump and a pipeline, the interrelation between solids concentration, velocity, and pressure drop was established for a bituminous lump coal (minus 2 inch) in concentrations up to 48 weight-percent. An optimum concentration was found to exist for maximum capacity of a given pipe-line, and for minimum energy requirements per ton of coal. Coal size degradation by particle fracture took place in the pump; abrasion and attrition to form fines took place in both pump and line. A novel system of studying flow of solid-liquid mixtures in pipelines by the determination of relative sound intensities was developed.

An evaluation of electrowon tungsten powder was made by comparing its characteristics with conventional hydrogen - reduced tungsten powder . Electrowon tungsten powder was investigated with respect to particle size and shape , apparent density , flow rate , compressibility , green strength , and sintering characteristics . In addition , its chemical purity , absolute density , and purification by melting were determined . Significant findings were higher flow rates and better compressibility than hydrogen - reduced tungsten powder . However , the large particle size peculiar to the electrowinning process effectively prevented conventional sintering to a high- density material . The possibility of producing high - density material , using a new technique of hot swaging sheathed sintered - tungsten compacts , was demonstrated by the achievement of densities of 92 percent of theoretical .

"The mathematical treatments used in the evaluation of particle size distribution from pipet-withdrawal centrifuge data are reviewed. An error in the published procedure for multiple-sample withdrawal systems is pointed out and a corrected formulation is presented. An alternative treatment, based on a piece-wise linearization of the size distribution is described. Computer simulations of the analytical and data evaluation procedures indicate that the errors in the original formulation are not generally serious and that the corrected and alternative procedures lead to very similar estimates. Except for some cases involving very narrow size distributions, the alternative approach appears to give slightly closer estimates of the size distribution. Comparisons based on actual experimental data are also described.1 IntroductionSedimentation methods are widely used for the determination of particle size distributions. The procedures are relatively simple to use and the results are essentially absolute, requiring no external calibration. The Bureau of Mines, as part of its goal of helping maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic A needs, is evaluating alternative technologies to treat oxidized taconites. Since process control is an essential element in the application of these process technologies, research was performed on a prototype monitoring system utilizing a Californium-252 (252-Cf) neutron source and a thermal neutron capture-gamma ray spectra analysis method to measure the amount of iron and percent solids in process slurries. The prototype system was used to monitor the concentrate and tailing streams in a 900-lb/hr flotation pilot plant during continuous around-the-clock tests. The iron content of the process slurries was determined by measuring the total peak areas under the capture spectrum peaks at 7.626-7.632 MeV, the associated escape peaks at 7.136-7.122 and 6.626-6.612 MeV, and the iron doublets at 4.900 and 4.998 MeV. A potential method for determining the percent solids in process slurries using the 2.22 MeV hydrogen capture peak is discussed. Results of this work demonstrate a potential method for providing process control parameters using the data from thermal neutron capture-gamma ray reactions.
