"MANGANESE-SILOCON ALLOYS AS DEOXIDIZERSThe basic open-hearth process for steel mining requires large amounts of oxidized iron for oxidation of the elements carbon, silicon, manganese, and phosphorus which are to be removed from the metal. Some of this oxidized iron (FeO) dissolves in the metal during the refining process, Subsequent to the elimination of the elements named, a considerable amount of dissolved iron oxide must be removed before the metal may be cast into ingot form. The elements generally used, for iron oxide removal, or deoxidation, are silicon, manganese, and aluminum. Silicon and manganese are always alloyed with iron, either singly or in combinations of various compositions. Aluminum generally is used in a commercially pure state and sometimes in complex alloys. A double deoxidizer of manganese and silicon alloyed with iron for furnace deoxidation has been the subject of an extensive cooperative investigation between the United States Bureau of Mines, the Carnegie Institute of Technology, and the Metallurgical Advisory Board. Certain grader of steel, especially low-carbon rimming steels, require a low-carbon deoxidizer to keep the finished steel within the carbon specification after deoxidation. The vanadiferous deposits of the Sublette Ridge and Salt River Range, 2 miles east of Raymond, Idaho, in western Lincoln County, Wyo., were examined August 24 to August 30, 1942, by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, who was shown these properties by W. W. Rubey of the Geological Survey, Washington, D. C. The Sublette Ridge deposits are owned by the former U. S. Phosphate Co. H. F. Chaney, Portland, Oreg., is the representative for the company. The following report covers the history of the district, outlines the physical features and communications, mentions the property, and notes the ownership. The deposits and ore are described, and work performed by the Bureau of Mines is explained in detail. Ore-dressing tests and methods are explained.

"INTRODUCTION The bottoming of the United Verde sulfide pipe has shortened the expected life of the United Verde mine to a matter of a few years. First located in 1876, this Arizona mine has had a long period of activity, having reached a peak production in 1929 of over 71,000 trans of copper. Through these many years of successful operation, a safety program has evolved in keeping with the proficiency developed in mining the ore body. In underground room-and-pillar mining methods, the sectional conveyor belts are extended or retracted periodically to maintain shuttle car tramming distance to a minimum. A conventional conveyor belt extension or retraction is a heavy, arduous job that if mecahnized, has the potential to improve productivity and safety. To reduce the burden of heavy work of this activity and mechanize it, the Bureau of Mines developed a conveyor belt service machine (CBSM) through a research contract with Tractor MBA. The CBSM is a self-contained, battery-powered, rubber-tired vehicle capable of handling, storing and transporting conveyor belting, wire rope, and associated belt structures in seams as low as 48 in. Belt extensions and retractions are accomplished by moving the tailpiece of a belt conveyor with the CBSM to the next position while dispensing or retrieving the belt, wire rope, and associated belt structures. The CBSM improves the belt extensions and retractions by making them easier and faster, and it utilizes fewer workers. The CBSM was surface tested at the Bureau's Mining Equipment Test Facility (METF) to evaluate its performance and reliability. Modifications were made to the CBSM to correct deficiencies found during surface testing.

The problems presented by old mine workings affect both present day mining and land development. An automated method of locating these old mines from the surface using electrical resistivity techniques was de-veloped earlier under a Bureau of Mines contract. Subsequent Bureau research has refined the techniques and expanded the area of study to a variety of geologic provinces. During this research, six mining areas in the United States were in-vestigated with the Bureau's automated resistivity method. This report describes the mining areas involved and the results of the resistivity investigations, which showed a high rate of success in detecting old mines. It also describes the field measurement techniques and data analysis procedures.

This report describes a U.S. Bureau of Mines study on the hazards of large-scale conveyor belt fires in underground coal mines, as a function of both air velocity and distance from belt surface to gallery roof. The fire hazards considered were smoke obscuration, toxic effects of carbon monoxide (CO), and elevated air temperatures downstream of the fire. All of these hazards scale with the ratio of fire intensity to ventilation airflow. These hazards were all found to be greater at the lower belt-to-roof distance, owing to the greater fire intensities that resulted. The hazards of smoke obscuration and elevated CO levels were greater at lower air velocities. Smoke obscuration was found to be the earliest hazard, reaching critical levels before the stage of belt flame spread. Critical levels of CO and downstream air temperatures were not reached until the later stages of flame spread. Fire growth rates during rapid flame spread were much greater than rates measured during the early stages of belt burning. Data were analyzed to determine the early-warning capability of fire sensors. Smoke sensors provided the earliest warning, followed closely by CO sensors. Thermal sensors did not exhibit any early warning capability.

Before the various States began to enact workman's compensation laws accidents were considered inherent in many industries, and little or no effort was made to prevent or reduce them. The hazard was accepted by the employee with the job, and the avoidance of accidents by mental alertness or physical agility was largely his responsibility. After the employee had given evidence of enough skill inn performing his allotted task efficiently the responsibility of the employer apparently ceased with respect to the personal safety of the employee. However, following the enactment of workmen's compensation laws, at least two facts that had not before been fully appreciated soon became apparent: (1) The majority of accidents can be prevented if the management firmly determines to prevent them; (2) frog a monetary point of view alone accidents are decidedly expensive, both to employer and to employee. It is now evident that savings effected by conscientious safety effort add substantially to net profits of operation.

This is one of a series of pacers being published by the United States Bureau of Mines, describing mining and milling methods at crushed-stone plants throughout the United States. These pacers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. Although the publication of total production cost might not be advisable in some instances, yet a knowledge of operating costs is essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called o this differentiation in order that there will be no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations. This paper deals with the quarrying and crushing methods used at the Plainville plant of the New Haven Trap Rock Co., which produces annually between 275,000 and 300,000 tons of trap rock, Although pct the largest quarry operated by the company, it typifies the standard methods used by all the quarries in producing crushed stone and has one or two rather unique operating features. The cost of production at this plant is close to the average cost at all quarries of the company.

This report presents is an evaluation by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the effect of clay-water, brine, and oil-base drilling fluids on the productivity of test wells drilled on the Umiat anticline in U.S. Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4 in northern Alaska. Eleven, wells were drilled on the Umiat structure as part of the U.S. Navy's extensive exploration of the Reserve during 1944-53 to determine the possibilities for oil production. The Federal Geological Survey cooperated in the exploration program and has published a comprehensive report3/ on the geology of the area and case histories of the wells. The re¬port also includes the results of special studies by the Bureau in connection with the drilling and coring of well 9 with oil-base mud in hole and was the source of much of the information used in preparing this publication. Of the eleven wells, four were drilled with rotary tools and water-base mud (one of the water-base muds was an oil-in-water emulsion mud), five were drilled with cable tools with brine in the hole, one was drilled with cable tools with brine in the hole and later reamed with rotary tools and crude oil, and one was drilled with rotary tools and oil-base mud. Although all of the wells penetrated sandstones that contained oil and gas, some were productive and others were not. The latter two wells, one completed with crude oil in the hole (with some added brine) and the other with oil-base mud, had the greatest productive capacities. The wells drilled with cable tools and brine in the hole had lower productive capacities. In contrast, two of three wells completed with rotary methods and fresh-water drilling mud and the well com¬pleted with rotary and emulsion mud were unproductive.

The degree and manner of packing of bulk materials influences all phases of their loading, such as by a front end loader or a dragline, and their mechanics of flow, such as through a binhopper or an ore pass. The most important quantity in analyzing the handling of a bulk material is its shear strength which depends primarily on the same parameters as those that determine the packing state. Some of these are size, size distribution, moisture content, particle shape, particle orientation, and cohesion. The variables that affect the packing state arc vibration, pressure, intensity of deposition, velocity of deposition, and, when the material is confined, container used. The analysis of packing by a number of investigators has been done almost entirely with spherical particles. Most of these studies have dealt with monosized spheres. There is scant information on particles with angular shapes. Since most of the investigations by far have been concerned with ceramics and powder metallurgy, the particle sizes and ranges of size distribution have been small compared to those generally found in mining after fragmentation.

The investigation shows that there are 2 coal beds of major importance in Letcher County from the standpoint of present production - Upper Elkhorn No, 3 and Fire Clay - and 5 beds of minor importance - Whitesburg, Flag, Haddix, Elkhorn Leader, and Amburgy, The Upper Elkhorn No. 3 and Fire Clay beds contain the largest remaining known reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,600 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 1,353 million short tons as of January 1, 1952. Of this total, 1,056 million short tons ere in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bad characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

In this Bureau of Mines investigation, the low-temperature heat capacities of polycrystalline phases corresponding to the sulfide compounds CoSO?89' CoS1?33, and CoS2 were measured by adiabatic calorimetry within the nominal temperature range 5 to 300 K. The derived absolute entropies S298 were 10.36±O.02, 12.96±O.03, and 16.31±O.03 cal?mol-1?K-l, respectively, assuming third-law behavior. In addition, the standard enthalpy of formation 8Hf298 of CoSO?89 was determined by bromine solution calorimetry. The derived value of 8Hf298 was -50.63±2.1 kcal?mol-1, based on the 8Hf298 of Co0. This result is considerably more negative than previously published formation values based on high-temperature gas equilibrium studies.

Three samples of waste lubricating oil were re-refined by processes developed by the Bureau of Mines and reformulated with additives to meet designated requirements for viscosity and service. Quality-defining bench-scale tests were used to compare and evaluate the quality of these three motor oils, eight commercially re-refined lubricating oils, and three new lubricating oils. Most of the re-refined oils studied could not be distinguished from new oils by the bench tests used to define quality. There was some evidence, however, that one and perhaps more of the re-refined products investigated might not meet all of the quality standards of new lubricating oil, suggesting the need for better quality controls by re-refiners.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the method of obtaining a strength index for rock drillability, particularly for percussion drills. The original Protodyakonov method has been slightly modified, essentially to eliminate uncertainties in the measurement of the volume of fines, and to avoid conjecture in selecting the representative value as the strength coefficient. A theoretical consideration of the relevant parameters in the method was extended from a comminution theory, and hence the meaningful value was obtained experimentally by plotting the ratio of the number of drops and the volume of fines against the number of drops. The minimum ratio of the number of drops to the volume of fines in the plot was selected as the coefficient of rock strength. The modified method of obtaining the strength coefficient preserves the original Protodyakonov test apparatus and the merit of simplicity of the test procedure. The modified coefficient of rock strength shows its usefulness in predicting penetration rates with greater reliability than other mechanical properties. Consequently, the drillability curves were drawn using the modified coefficient of rock strength as the parameter for penetration rate prediction in the field.

On the night of June 8, 1917, the flame of a carbide lamp accidentally set fire to the uncovered and frayed insulation of an armored power cable near the 2,400-foot level of the North Butte Mining Co.'s Granite Mountain shaft. How this insulation accidentally became exposed is explained on page 15. The highly flammable oiled fabric set fire to the shaft timbers, and as this is a downcast shaft the fire spread with great rapidity, soon filling the mine workings with smoke and gas. At the time 410 men were working underground, 247 of whom escaped by various means, but most of the 163 remaining were probably overcome soon after the lire started, and perished. Only two men were actually burned. The cause of the disaster was purely accidental. The immediate effect was the unexpected reversal of normal conditions; the ultimate effect was great loss of life and the destruction of the main hoisting shaft, putting it temporarily out of service. The work of rescue and fire fighting continued eight days. The following pages present an attempt to draw some practical conclusions and suggestions from this disaster. The property of the North Butte Mining Co. consists of about 220 acres in the northeastern part of the Butte district, Montana. Next to the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. it is the largest pro¬ducer of the district. In 1916, the year before the disaster, there were 1,160 men employed. The output was 560,947 tons of ore, which yielded 24,498,181 pounds of copper, 1,047,063 ounces of silver, 1,712 ounces of gold, and 412,953 pounds of zinc. The profit was $2,479,595. The total development work for that year was 21,694 feet. During the first half of 1917, the year of the accident, the daily tonnage of ore averaged 2,000, an increase of 400 tons over that of the year 1916.

The Bureau of Mines issued three Information Circulars on marble many years ago (5), (6), (7).2/ They have long been out of print; furthermore, conditions have changed considerably in the industry in succeeding years. A presentation of current data is therefore desirable. This report furnishes general information on marble, including its properties, distribution of domestic and foreign deposits, methods and equipment used in quarrying and milling, economic and marketing problems, and recent advances in marble technology. INTRODUCTION Most marbles are crystallized limestone. The term "marble" is derived from a Greek word meaning to sparkle or flash, because the calcite crystals in marble sparkle as they reflect light. The word "marble" is employed frequently to mean a small ball used in the game of marbles with which nearly every child is familiar. Although the little spheres were originally of marble, few of those made in recent years contain that material; nevertheless, the expression "playing marbles" has persisted.

This is one of a series of information circulars describing mining and milling methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. The Summitville Consolidated Mines, Inc., is the only company now active at Summitville. Since the holdings of the company include those of most of the former producers of the camp, the paper virtually becomes a description of the Summitville district. The field data were collected from August 23 to 28, 1937. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The writer gratefully acknowledges his indebtedness to H. F. The Tennessee Copper Co. operated two mines in the Ducktown district during 1928. The Burra Burra mine is much the larger operation and is the chief source of the ore smelted and treated in the, company's smelter and acid plant rat Copperhill, 4.5 miles from Ducktown. This mine operates steadily and furnishes a regular output of about 40,000 tons per month. The Eureka mine is operated irregularly and produces a much smaller tonnage of high-sulphur ore the rate of output depending upon the demand for sulphur. During 1928 about 60 per cent of the combined output of these mines was shipped directly to the smelter, and the balance was concentrated before shipment in the flotation plant located near the mines.
