This paper, describing the concentrator practice of the United Verde Copper Co., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of HISTORY The United Verde concentrator was constructed in accordance with recommendations based on certain novel reasons which were quite different from those usually justifying the expenditure of such an amount. Concentrator operations started in March, 1927, although the metallurgical staff had considered for several years the eventual addition of a concentrator department.

The investigation of the nickel - gadolinium phase diagram was undertaken to determine the alloying behavior of these two metals . The data from meltingpoint determinations , thermal analyses , metallographic examinations , and X- ray diffraction analyses revealed a phase diagram with three eutectic points and seven intermetallic compounds . Very limited solubility of the phases in each other was observed . The five phases , Ni Gd , Ni , Gd , Ni Gd , Ni, Gd , and NiGd¸ , melted incongruently at about 1,300 ° , 1,270 ° , 1,180 ° , 1,070 ° , and 775 ° C , respectively . Ni Gd and NiGd melted congruently at approximately 1,550 ° and 980 ° C , respectively . Four of the compounds were determined to crystallize in the hexagonal system : Ni Gd , Ni Gd , Ni , Gd , and Ni Gd . Ni Gd was determined to be cubic and NiGd , orthorhombic . The crystal system of NiGd was not determined . The eutectic points occurred at 13 , 67 , and 85 wt pct gadolinium , and the isotherms at 1,290 ° , 890 ° , and 700 ° C , respectively .

The vapor pressures of tungsten (VI ) chloride ( WC1 ) and hafnium ( IV ) iodide ( HFI ) were measured by a metal diaphragm technique . Vapor pressure values were obtained to permit calculation of the thermodynamic properties of the vaporization processes of the compounds . The vapor pressure data of WC16 are represented by the following equations for the liquid , B - solid , and a- solid over the temperature intervals indicated : - log P = 8.194 3,253 /T Liquid , 281.5 ° to 325 ° C : B - solid 230.0 ° to 281.5 ° C : log P a - solid 185.0 ° to 230.0 ° C : log Pam *** = 8.794 - 3,588 / T = 9.615 - 3,996 /T where T is the absolute temperature in degrees Kelvin . The heats of vaporization and sublimation are 14.9 , 16.4 , and 18.3 kcal / g mole , respectively . The entropy of vaporization at the normal boiling point , 330 ° C , was 24.3 eu . The fusion temperature , 281.5 ° C , and transition temperatures , 230.0 ° and 185 ° C , were found by thermal analysis .

This paper describes the location and general features of iron occurrences in Colorado. Most of the deposits were examined; many are in forested and mountainous areas at altitudes of 5,000 to 13,700 feet. Iron is known to occur in 30 counties of western Colorado. Transporting the ore to market is a handicapping economic factor involving long truck and railroad hauls; the nearest purchaser of smelting ores is the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corp., at Pueblo, Colo. When the ore can be sold locally for special purposes and at higher prices than can be obtained at iron smelters, small-scale operations can supply that market.

This report discusses current research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on the effects of whole-body vibration (WBV) and shock on underground mobile equipment operators. The highlights of a comprehensive literature review of WBV, shock, and seating are presented. Factors discussed include health and physiological effects, comfort, performance, and fatigue. Vibration data were collected from shuttle cars and ramcars at several underground coal mines in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Illinois. The data were formatted so that they could be used to drive the Bureau's motion platform, and to compare them with ANSI S3-1979, Guide for the Evaluation of Human Exposure to Whole-Body Vibration. Human subject testing in the Bureau's vibration research laboratory evaluated the effects of two different seat angles and of the presence or absence of vibration and of foam padding on heart rate, blood pressure, and subjective discomfort. Only vibration significantly increased heart rate and systolic and mean blood pressures. Vibration and a steel seat had a significant effect on subjective discomfort. The apparatus used for these tests and the experimental procedures are described in detail. Recommendations are made for additional research on the exposure of underground mining machine operators to WBV and shock.

For nearly 30 years the Bureau of Mines has contended that mine explosions can be prevented and has pointed out to the industry ways and means by which they could be avoided. The record of co2l-mine explosions • during the past fiscal ?Bar bears out the :Bureau1s contention, inasmuch as fewer men were killed by coal-mi~e e:xplosions in the United States during that year than in :gi_y corresponding 12 months in the history of coal mining in the United States, insofar as records are available; and more than a year has elapsed since·a major explosion (in which five or more men were killed) has occurred, this being t.1-J.e first continuous 12- month period without a major coal-mine explosion disaster in the United States in more than 60 years. The methods of preventing mine e:iiplosions are well known to experienced, well-informed persons cngnged in coal mining. Despite this knowledge, many coal-mine operutors continue to use practices and methods that they should know have resulted in countless explosions, and mine workers persist in following past procedure or in breaking safety rules and practices almost certain eventually to result in disaster. ' Virtually all explosions are the result of human failure, such as carelessness or neglect by officials or workers or others. These human failures can be corrected chiefly by ed.ucation and proper and adequate supervision and strict discipline. In some instances mine officials are ·lax, careless, poorl~• informed, and often incompetent; end in many instances miners have repulsed the introduction of known preventive methods because of sheer obstinacy, ignorance, heedlessness, or possibly fear that the operator was trying to o'bta.in some unfair adva.,.'1. tago or would neglect some other phase of accident or e,:plosion prevention. The inputs of capital and labor to support future iron ore production were developed by the Bureau of Mines from projections of iron demand and estimates of capital and labor requirements. Trends in technologic change and the organization of production were analyzed. Labor requirement schedules for iron ore mining and beneficiating were constructed from aggregate inter-temporal trends and 1970 cross-sectional analysis of mines and mills. A sup-ply schedule of the capital requirement for mine-mill-pellet plants was developed from U.S. and Canadian experience. The structure of demand for iron to the year 2000 was examined as well as the availability of resources. Projections of capital and labor requirements to 2000 were constructed under two international patterns of iron ore supply to the United States. The most likely model is for a continuation of the 70 percent United States-30 percent foreign shares, expanding at an average 2.0 percent growth rate to 2000, and supported by a cumulative gross capital investment of $3.8 billion constant 1967 dollars and a labor force in the United States of 29,800 by 2000. The information content of projections is discussed, and the possible effects of international forces on supply are considered. A generalized methodology for estimating capital and labor requirements in other mineral industries also is included.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a comprehensive study of the Kanab, Kolob, Kaiparowits, and Harmony coalfields of southwestern Utah to obtain additional information and to determine the potentials of these coalfields as sources of energy for steam-electric power-generating plants. Field examinations were made to ascertain the geologic structure and the stratigraphy of the coalfields, the accessibility of the coal-bearing strata, and the general nature of the coal-bearing strata and the terrain. Many mines, both active and abandoned, were examined, and key personnel in the coal industry in the area were consulted. Available analyses of southwestern Utah coals were compiled, and tentative conclusions regarding the rank and quality of the coals were drawn. Coals have been classified by rank according to the standards established by the American Society for Testing and Materials in 1964. The Parr formula for moist, mineral-matter-free British thermal units has been used to calculate the rank of each sample, except as otherwise noted. Water resources related to the areas of the coal reserves also were investigated. Existing literature and maps pertaining to the geology of the areas were reviewed. Production potentials of the coalfields and economic conditions affecting the possible utilization of the coal reserves as sources of energy for steam-powered electricity-generating plants were investigated and analyzed. The data obtained and the conclusions reached as a result of this study are included in this document. The total reserves of subbituminous A and high-volatile bituminous C coals in the fields of southwestern Utah are estimated to be at least 8 billion short tons at depths generally less than 2,000 feet. It appears likely that this estimate will be increased as additional data are made available through exploration and other investigations. Sufficient coal is available in four southwestern Utah counties to supply three or four large steam-electric plants. If the States involved grant water rights to companies planning to build steam-electric plants, the cost of producing power with coal might be attractive and might justify the construction of one or more of these plants.

Twenty-two samples of West Virginia coals were carbonized at 9000 C by the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) method, and yields of products and physical properties of cokes were determined. Eighteen samples represented the Coa1burg, No. 2 Gas, No. 2 Gas and Peerless, Powellton, Eagle, Big Eagle, Lower Eagle, Sewell, Fire Creek, and Pocahontas No.6 beds in Fayette County, and four samples represented the Sewell and Fire Creek beds in Greenbrier County. Expansion characteristics of the majority of samples were determined in the Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven. Chemical analyses were determined for all coals. The coals in Fayette County are high-volatile A, medium-volatile, and low-volatile in rank, and the Greenbrier coals are medium-volatile in rank. Most of the coals are chemically suitable for metallurgical coking. All coke strength indices are within acceptable limits for metallurgical coking coals. All the high-volatile A coals contracted and the medium-and low-volatile coals expanded in the sole-heated oven expansion test.

World resources of platinum-group metals appear ample for the foreseeable future; however, political and economic events in the last two decades have caused concern over the availability and reliability of an uninterrupted supply. Because of this concern, the U.S. Congress requested that the U.S. Bureau of Mines initiate a study of the flow of platinum-group metals in the economy that would delineate and quantify the production areas in which metal values are lost. As a result, the Bureau has developed a computerized commodity flow model for strategic and critical materials. Major attributes of this flow model are as follows: (1) it is generic and applicable to most commodities and (2) it can be updated as supply, demand, and/or production data change. The original model developed for cobalt, with slight modifications, was used to track the flow of platinum-group metals. This report follows the flow of platinum-group metals through their metallurgical, catalytic, and chemical applications and highlights areas in which significant losses occur because of downgrading, export, or disposal. The study indicates that materials containing about 63,426 kg of platinum-group metals were lost or could not be traced in 1989, representing about 63 pct of U.S. domestic consumption.

A study of factors related to subsidence was specified in a project proposal entitled "Structural Analysis of Block-Caving Operation, San Manuel Copper Mine, Pinal County, Ariz.," approved by the Bureau of Mines early in 1953. This proposal was designed by Charles H. Johnson, then chief of the Base Metals Branch of the Minerals Division, Washington, D. C., assisted by Dr. Leonard Obert, chief of the Applied Physics Branch, Region VIII (now Region V), College Park, Md., and E. D. Gardner, chief mining engineer, Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C. It read as follows: This project is a study of the mechanics of undercut block caving in a deep ore deposit. The San Manuel is a low-grade disseminated copper deposit containing nearly a half billion tons of ore lying at depths of 500 to 2,000 feet. Development is just starting. Production is to begin in 3 to 4 years (in 1956) at a rate of 30,000 tons of ore a day, or 60,000 tons of copper a year. A Government loan of $90,000,000 /subsequently increased to $94,000,000/ and a long-term Government purchase contract support the capital investment, which will total about $110,000,000.

In 1919 the United States was threatened with a shortage of gaso- line. In spite of this well-known fact, a detailed field investigation has shown that in one stage only of handling crude oil the volume of gasoline that evaporates is equal to one-thirtieth of the country's yearly gasoline production. This loss occurs during the few days that the oil is stored on the leases before being taken by the pipe line, and in 1919, in the Mid-Continent field alone, it amounted to 122,100,000 gallons. Large as it is, it is only a part of the loss on the lease. Investigation has further shown that the gasoline in crude oil evaporates from one-half to six-tenths as rapidly as the same gaso- line after being distilled and stored, all evaporative conditions being the same. Many wastes in the oil fields are called "necessary." By this is meant that the cost of preventing the waste is greater than the gain through saving. Evaporation losses have fallen heretofore in this category, but now they must be considered unnecessary. In other words, it is no longer economical for any handler of crude oil to permit losses through evaporation. In accordance with its purpose of seeking to conserve mineral resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated the loss of gasoline by evaporation in the storage and handling of petroleum. Inasmuch as most producers had not decided that their losses justified cor- rective measures and no evidence was available on the comparative losses in various stages of handling the oil, the investigation was limited to determining by experiment and observation the nature and magnitude of evaporation losses, where the greatest losses are, and the factor controlling evaporation.

PRODUCTION in the United States of carbon black has increased from 20 million pounds per year in 1920 to over 2 billion pounds in 1964 valued at $156 million, mostly for consumption by the rubber-tire industry, which uses over 90 percent of total production. Production of over 2 billion pounds in 1964 is a 7.8-percent increase over 1963 and is the first time furnace black production has topped 2 billion pounds. Although 1964 channel black production dropped 6 percent below 1963, carbon black produced by the furnace process, which ac-counted for 92 percent of total production, increased 9 percent to 2,053 million pounds. Total shipments during 1964 amounted to 2,245 mil-lion pounds, a 7 percent increase. This growth parallels the expansion of the automotive and petroleum industries. Along with this expansion have been many advances, both in methods of manufacture and in the quality and variety of blacks available to industry. There are several kinds of carbon black, thermal, channel, furnace, lamp, and oil blacks. Until recently, channel has been the important black in rubber compounding. Following the introduction of the synthetic GR-S, and more recently of "cold rubber," it has been found that certain furnace blacks with particle size larger than that of the standard channel black give superior reinforcement. A great advantage of furnace black is that its yield per unit of gas feedstock is higher than that of channel black. The 184-million-pound increase in domestic carbon black sales was partially offset by a 37-million-pound decrease in exports. Decrease in exports especially to Europe, is expected to continue. In Europe, as in the United States, the major end use for carbon black is in the manufacture of automobile and truck tires. Although the number of automobiles in Europe is predicted to grow by about 7.5 percent per year, compounded until 1975, the increased demand will be met by a 20 percent increase in existing capacity and by the new plants being built in Europe by U.S. companies. Also) aromatic oils for producing furnace blacks are plentiful now that western Europe's chemical industry is switching to a petroleum base.

In 1927 Coghill showed that there is considerable liberation of the iron oxide mineral from gangue when the Alabama red iron ores are ground to a size suitable for classification and tabling but that there is not sufficient to make possible a high extraction and a high grade of concentrate. Coghill states: High extraction and 'high grade of concentrate cannot be obtained without grinding to a size comparable with flotation or cyanide practice. If grade of concentrate be sacrificed the grinding need not be so severe. These ores slime readily during grinding, and in most instances the slimes are only slightly higher grade than the original ore. Not only do they carry a considerable percentage of the total iron in the ore, so that to reject them as tailings would result in prohibitively low extraction, but they are too fine to be amenable to ordinary methods of gravity concentration. In 1929 the Bureau of Mines published results showing that certain Alabama oolitic iron ores could be concentrated by classification and tabling after grinding, with rubber-covered rods. This selective grinding produced slimes of much higher grade than the original ore, and they were considered part of the final concentrate.

"Experiments were carried out to determine the long-term effect of instillation of 500 mg of generic bituminous, anthracite, quartz, or titanium dioxide (Ti02) dust on the composition of pulmonary surfactant. Dust was instilled in the caudal lobe of the right lungs of female pigtailed macaque monkeys (Macaca nemestrina). The composition of surfactant isolated from cell-free bronchoalveolar lavage (CF-BAL) samples obtained from right lungs (dust exposed) at various times over the following year was compared with that of surfactant isolated from CF-BAL from left lungs (dust free) . Little change was seen in the amount of surfactant-associated lipid phosphorus as a result of exposure to dust. Exposure to quartz, anthracite, or Ti02 dust induced a significant increase in the total amount of protein in the surfactant-enriched fraction. The relative amount of specific proteins was also altered: surfactant-associated protein A decreased, and the amount of the heavy and light chains of immunoglobulin molecules (identified by NHiterminal amino acid sequence analysis) increased. These changes were visible more than a year after instillation of quartz and at least 3 months after instillation of anthracite dust. Despite variation in the responses of the individual animals, the changes observed might serve as an indicator of the severity of the effect of exposure of the lung to mineral dust and/or to pathogens. IntroductionSurfactant is essential for normal pulmonary function and gas exchange. It functions to reduce surface tension and may help to prevent pulmonary edema [19] and to protect against infection [13]. The importance of surfactant to normal Jung function is illustrated by the fact that neonates lacking appropriate surfactant undergo respiratory distress and do not survive without clinical support."

The Carthage field, in Pamela County, Tex., is one of the largest gas-condensate in respect to both areal extent and volume of recoverable gas in the United States. The field (shown in fig. 1) is approximately 25 miles long by 20 miles wide on a southwest to northeast axis and includes 306 producing wells as of July 1, 1948. 3 distinct reservoirs in the Rodessa and Sligo formations have been found in the Carthage area the two main producing zones being the Upper and Lower Pettit, less important production being found in the Hill zone. Although a small amount of commercial production has been obtained in the Travis Peak formation, it has not been included in this report. An engineering study has been made by Bureau of Mines engineers, with the ultimate objective of arriving at an estimate of the gas reserves, by application of the data made available by the operators in the Carthage field. During World War II the Bureau of Mines submitted a restricted petroleum-engineering report on the Carthage field to the Petroleum Administration for War, at which time (March 1944) the development consisted of only 19 producing wells, 7 of which were dual completions. Because of the restricted nature of the first report and the limited development at the time of writing, a more complete investigation and subsequent publication was considered advisable. Bureau of Mines engineers have made use of all available records such as electric logs, drilling-time logs, core descriptions and results of core analyses, well-completion records, and production data in developing this report.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Com¬mittee of the Coordinating Research Council (CFC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 4/ Further re¬ports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of l941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. The present report presents analytical data for 3,011 samples, representing the products of 113 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during July and August 1946. As in previous surveys the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 1,585 samples, 311 items, and 99 -brands; premium-price, 1,422 samples, 280 items, and 94 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. Procedures for separating columbium and tantalum have been developed by the Bureau of Mines as part of a broad research program on the utilization of low-grade ores of columbium and tantalum, Columbium and tantalum compounds of greater than 99 percent purity have been obtained by application of the solvent extraction separation system: Hydrofluoric acid-sulfuric acid-methyl iso-butyl ketone. This system is unique in that it not only separates columbium from tantalum, but also separates these two metals from other metallic impurities. The system is effective for separating the metals irrespective of the tantalum and columbium ratio of the starting materials. Investigations in which the spent feed obtained from the initial coextraction step was recycled to the system indicated that efficiency was increased, and cost was reduced without impairing product purity. Continuous tests demonstrated that this solvent extraction system could be used in large-scale equipment without loss in efficiency or in purity of products. The separation of columbium and tantalum has been difficult because of the similarity in their chemical bahavior. Many methods have been proposed for separating these two elements, but most methods either did not achieve satisfactory separation or were tedious and time consuming. The Marignac process (3, 4)4 developed in 1866 was the only method used commercially until recently. This separation procedure is based on the difference in solubility in aqueous solution of potassium tantalum fluoride and potassium columbium oxyfluoride. Current commercial practice appears to favor solvent extraction as a method for separating tantalum from columbium (1). Several efficient methods for separating columbium from tantalum by solvent extraction (2, 9, 8) were reported earlier from this laboratory.
