When an underground excavation is made, the rock surrounding the sides and top of the opening is deprived of its natural support and tends to fall. Whenever caving takes place, the time and extent of the caving depend on the character and condition of the rock. In strong homogenous rock, such as solid granite, even a large chamber may stand indefinitely, whereas a soft material, such as clay or a loose material like unconsolidated sand, falls immediately if not supported. Weaknesses in the rocks induced by structural features, such as joints, :fissures, bedding and cleavage planes, and fractures produced by blasting, will cause the falling of insecure blocks or slabs unless means are provided to support these in place. In an unsupported mine opening, as a tunnel, the first slight settling or adjusting movement of the rocks (the "initial creep" or "set") is caused by the great weight of overlying material pressing down the rock masses above and around the roof and sides of the opening until they key together in roughly the form of an arch. The rock, after it has adjusted itself to this shape, becomes. selfsupporting. Timbering is necessa.ry in all mining only to support, therefore, those comparatively small blocks or pieces of rock which tend to loosen from the top and sides of the opening during or after the formation 'of the natural rock arch, and which lie between this natural rock arch and the opening. This statement, of course, has its limitations. For example; a layer of strong rock, like limestone, may act as a beam; then only the material under the limestone will need support. Timbering is not, as is commonly supposed by the layman, used to supp!ort the huge mass of rock between the back (roof) of an underground opening and the surface. It would be impossible to place enough timbers in a:ny underground opening to support such a mass. This fact is not'·perceived by all miners.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the availability of copper from 272 deposits in market economy countries. The deposits studied have demonstrated resources totaling 413 million metric tons of contained copper and account for more than 90 pct of the reserve base for market economy countries. Using data gathered as part of its Minerals Availability Program, the Bureau performed geologic, engineering, and economic evaluations in order to determine the copper production potential of each deposit. At the 1981 copper market price of $0.85/lb, the deposits studied could economically produce an estimated 88 million metric tons of copper (allowing for profit computed at a 15-pct rate of return), primarily from mines operating at the time of the study (1981). At this price, producing mines in market economy countries could economically produce only 2.1 million metric tons of refined copper per year. However, actual 1981 production was 6.2 million metric tons, indicating that many mines continued to operate even though they were unable to cover all production costs. For U.S. producing mines, the estimated average cost of production per pound (including profit at a 15-pct rate of return) was $0.15 higher than the average cost in other market economy countries.

The Bureau of Mines located and examined 292 burning coal refuse banks throughout the Nation's coal-producing regions in 1968. These coal waste fires, extending over 3,200 acres, produce poisonous, acrid gases and particulate matter that pose a threat to health and safety in the surrounding areas, damage vegetation, and cause the deterioration of nearby structures and buildings. Methods of extinguishing coal refuse fires are discussed, and an approach to eliminating future occurrences of these fires is presented.

The effects of impurity elements silicon , aluminum, copper , nitrogen , and manganese , at 50 to 300 ppm, on properties of the zirconium alloy Zircaloy 2 were investigated . Variations in microstructure , mechanical properties , and corrosion behavior in some inorganic acid and salt solutions were observed with variations in level of impurity element . Corrodents were solutions of sulfuric acid , phosphoric acid , copper chloride , and iron chloride . Silicon was found to modify annealed microstructures by spheroidizing and dispersion of secondphase material throughout grains . Silicon or manganese improved ultimate and yield strength of the alloy without loss in ductility . All five elements affected corrosion rates of the alloy , the effect being generally different for each element .

Crystalline silica (quartz, cristobalite, and tridyrnite) is regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) because of its potential for causing debilitating but nonmalignant lung diseases. In 1987, the International Agency for Research Against Cancer (IARC) conducted a review of the health literature and concluded that crystalline silica was a probable human carcinogen. As a result of this finding, OSHA was required to regulate crystalline silica under its Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). The standard requires that all materials handled by OSHA-regulated facilities be labeled according to the requirements of RCS and that workers receive proper training on the handling of the material if the crystalline silica content equals or exceeds 0.1 weight percent (0.1 %). MSHA currently is considering enacting its own RCS. This will be similar to OSHA's RCS. If the standard is enacted, most mineral producers will have to determine the respirable monitor filter and bulk crystalline silica contents of their ores and products so that workers and/or customers will know whether they are in compliance with the 0.1% HCS and/or the OSHA permissible exposure level (PEL) of 50 µg for an 8-hour workday for respirable crystalline silica as determined from monitor samples. Two major concerns with the RCS are the widespread occurrence of crystalline silica in nature and the suitability of current technology for routinely determining crystalline silica concentrations at the 0.1 % RCS level. Most ores are extracted from silica-bearing deposits and it is a common constituent of rocks and soils. OSHA's RCS will have the greatest impact on the producers of crushed stone, diatomite, dimension stone, gravel, industrial sand, perlite, pumice, pyrophyllite, sand, and talc because these materials frequently are shipped directly from the mill to the customer. MSHA's RCS would affect nearly all mineral producers. Those producers that have crystalline silica present in concentrations near the 0.1 % cutoff point will have the most difficulty with the analysis. Crystalline silica can be quantified at the 0.1 % level by X-ray diffractometry in simple systems containing one, two, and possibly three minerals if (1) none of the accessory minerals has X-ray diffraction reflections that coincide or overlap with those of crystalline silica and (2) the standard has a particle size distribution and crystallinity similar to those of the sample. In some instances, it may not be possible to determine the crystalline silica content of a sample with any degree of certainty using the recommended regulatory protocol. In all cases, it is recommended that a qualified mineralogist identify the minerals in a sample prior to any regulatory analysis. Additionally, the uncertainty as to whether some silica polymorphs should be classified as crystalline or noncrystalline and the suitability of metastable high-temperature standards, such as cristobalite and tridyrnite, for regulatory analysis at ambient temperatures should be addressed further. This overview is written both to highlight these problems and to serve as a guide for analysts, regulators, and industry personnel who are involved in the crystalline silica issue. It also covers some of the difficulties and/or shortcomings in quantifying crystalline silica, such as the ubiquitous mineral quartz, in the workplace.

A two-dimensional finite element program has been modified and extended to account for some of the rock mechanics complexities associated with single entry development of longwall coal mine panels. Program capability includes arbitrary assignment of element properties without regard to element ordering, anisotropic elastic, plastic and brittle rock properties that may be time dependent (aging), arbitrary mining sequences and provision for the effects of artificial support on the adjacent strata. Failure is according to an extended von Mises criterion that may be linear or quadratic in form; flow rules are obtained from the yield function taken as the plastic potential, but brittle behavior is treated as a discontinuous process of material properties change with deformation. In either case the extent of failure is calculated from the external boundary conditions. Application of the program to essentially two-dimensional problems resulted in lose agreement between calculated displacements and field measurements in the double entry system. Bleeder entries were stable in one locality and not in another. Artificial support had little influence on stability.

The performances of four anthracite-burning stokers have been observed under identical 74-hp. steam boilers. Fifty runs of 12 and 24 hours' duration were made in accordance with the test code of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The capacity of each stoker for burning anthracite has been determined, the heat efficiency at each fuel rate has been computed, and the various significant items of hear loss have been estimated. The operating data and results from each run are tabulated in this report in the form used in the test code. The heat efficiencies and most significant operating data for each run are also presented graphically for each stoker to establish the trends with increasing boiler outputs, The tests show that rice anthracite can be burned on stokers adapted to its use at heat-conversion efficiencies of 82 percent or more under continuous firing. These high efficiencies are maintained with fuel inputs 30 percent higher and lower than the peak efficiency rate. Moreover, a heat efficiency of 70 percent or more is obtained at 50 percent of the optimum fuel rate, even though the excess air into the furnace cannot be held below 150 percent.

As part of its program to provide technology for reducing undesirable environmental impacts of mineral processing operations, the Bureau of Mines developed the citrate process for desulfurizing industrial stack gases that contain from 0.1 to 2 vol pet S02. In this regenerable flue gas desulfurization (FGD) process, S02 is absorbed from cleaned and cooled industrial flue gas with a citric acid-sodium citrate solution. The absorbed S02 is subsequently reacted with H2S to precipitate marketable elemental sulfur and regenerate the solution for recycle. Laboratory investigations of process parameters provided information for designing larger scale continuous operations. Information gathered from operation of two pilot plants, one at a copper smelter and one at a lead smelter, confirmed the laboratory results. Data were obtained for design and construction of a commercial-sized demonstration plant at the George F. Weaton Power Station, Monaca, PA. A preliminary operation of the plant was demonstrated, under a cost-sharing Bureau-industry contract. This bulletin describes the citrate process and gives results of the laboratory, pilot plant, and demonstration plant studies, as well as corrosion investigations.

A key step in changing coals to fluid fuels and chemicals is the conversion of coal to synthesis gas by gasification with steam and oxygen. As oxygen represents one of the largest single expenses in gasification, its cost is a vital factor in the economy of the process. At present, the most economical method for producing tonnage oxygen is by the conventional rectification of liquefied air. Several alternate methods have been proposed for producing oxygen from air: (1) methods based on physical or chemical sorption of oxygen from air by liquids or solids or (2) the oxidation of certain inorganic com-pounds to higher oxides unstable at higher temperature levels. Economic limitations are discussed by which these methods may be evaluated. Chelated metals of the salcomine type are promising chemical sorbents of oxygen from air. This report covers a study of the reversible sorption of oxygen by salcomine and other chelates. The presence of water in the salcomine structure was verified; it is the loss of this water that causes slow deterioration of salcomine during cycling.

The Tri-State, or Joplin, zinc and lead mining district in south- western Missouri and adjoining, parts of Kansas and Oklahoma is one of the great mining districts of the world. It is in flat-lying or gently rolling agricultural country near industrial centers and coal, oil, and gas fields. The nearly horizontally, lying bedded rocks in which the ore bodies are found were originally limestone but are now largely chert containing minor percent- ages of dolomite and other minerals. The ore occurs in nearly vertical fis- sure zones, large and small, and in blanket (sheet-ground) deposits. The mining depth ranges from surface diggings to $50 feet. The average tenor of the ore mined, in recent years is much lower than that of ore produced in other large zinc and lead districts of the United States. Mining and mill- ing costs are low because of the shallowness of mining, amenability of ores to concentration, efficiency resulting from long experience of management and labor, and other factors. The operators comprise many small and medium-size producing companies and partnerships, as well as individuals and a few larger producers. About 7,000 men are employed in the mines and mills during normal industrial activity. The concentrates produced are sold f.o.b. the mill bins to local representatives of smelting companies at prices quoted on the Joplin market. The productive life of the district began with the discovery of lead near Joplin in 1848, but output was not large until after mining for zinc began near Granby in 1871. In most of the intervening years through 1945 the district produced more zinc than any other field, and it generally ranked third or fourth in the United States in lead production. Figures compiled from sources given later in this paper show a total output for the district from the beginning through 1945 of 20,755,020 tons of zinc concentrates and 3,334,057 tons of lead concentrates valued altogether at $1,110,058,581 in the mill bins. The output, in terms of recoverable metals, was 10,609,408 tons of zinc and 2,529,121 tons of lead, valued in all, at the average yearly market prices of the metals, at $1,691,282,419. During the 39 years (1907-1945) for which complete figures are available, the annual output of the district fluctuated from 23 to 66 percent of the total United States mine output of zinc and from 5 to 18 percent of the total lead; the averages for the period were 40 percent for zinc and 11 percent for lead. peak yearly production was attained in 1926, with an output of 423,800 tons of recoverable zinc and 102;117 tons of lead. Since that yoar the production rate has trended downward, accentuated at first by the depression in the thirties and later ameliorated somewhat under the stimulus of heavy demand and higher metal prices during World War II; the output in 1945 was 139,274 tons of recovorablo zinc and 23,556 tons of load. The above figures show the groat contribution made by the Tri-State district in the past toward the country's supplies of primary zinc and lead, cspecially zinc. However, the district's production is expected to decline both in quantity and in proportion of total United States mine output unless important discoveries are made. THE RAPID GROWTH of the small Albanian mineral industry in the 1950's began to taper off by 1961 and slackened sharply in 1963. The abandonment of Soviet and East European technical assistance programs in mid-1961 greatly affected Albania's mineral development, since four-fifths of all technical aid personnel were engaged in mineral activities. Chinese assistance apparently has not been able to fill the void. Overall mineral production increases during 1961-63 averaged 1 percent per year in value, as compared with 3 percent in 1959 and 5 percent in 1960. Although by world standards Albanian mineral output, except for chromite, is insignificant, it is vital to the country's domestic economy. The mineral industry generated about 14 percent of the gross industrial product in 1962 and employed a notable share of the industrial labor force. In recent years, mineral products have provided about three-fifths of the country's exports by value. Chromite and iron-nickel ores together constituted from one-fourth to one-third of the total export value. In 1963, total trade turnover increased 12 percent over 1962.

As a result of Synopsis 73-16 Dynadyne responded with an unsolicited proposal offering the Bureau of Mines to develop an ultra-low volume coal mine dust personal sampler. In the ensuing technical discussions the choice of a desirable volumetric rate became a focal point. While, the initial proposal was based on a volumetric rate in the area of 50 cc/min the Government expressed interest in a variety of mass flow rates ranging from 50 cc/min to 2000 cc/min. The physical characteristics such as weight, volume and configuration of a personal sampler are to a large extent - dependent on the operating volumetric rate. It became readily apparent that the optimum size of such an instrument as a function of volumetric rate was not known and that a study of the choice of optima was essential prior to beginning the development, Hence, the Government authorized a two phase approach to this project. Phase I was to include a Technical Evaluation Study of optimum characteristics in the range between 0. 1 to 2. 0 lpm. Based on these findings and in consultation with MESA personnel, the Bureau of Mines was to authorize the second phase that is, the development. Phase II, was to include the drawing of a set of performance specifications stating among others the desired operating volumetric rate. In this report, every effort was made not only to present the actual work done over the course of this development, but to reflect also our engineering "thinking" providing answers as to the "why" we preferred certain solutions over others. We believe that this added dimension is not only useful for the Government official evaluating this report, but also that the Government is entitled to it providing the official with an educational content useful in avoiding future costly repetitions of similar situations.

[Many methods of analyzing tar oils for their tar acid and base content have bun employed in connection with both academic and. industrial investigations. Most of these analytical procedures are based on the diminution in volume caused by extraction with alkali and mineral acids (contraction method), although other methods haves been employed.4/ In many instances the adoption of an analytical method was not preceded by adequate study, and, as a consequence, the literature, on this subject is conspicuous for its contradictory claims and recommendations. This report describes a process for recovering chromium and other metals from superalloy scrap. Part I contains the results of laboratory scale experiments which were conducted to test a complex flowsheet utilizing a wide range of extractive metallurgical operations. The novel basis for the process is the formation of a sulfide matte in which chromium is concentrated in a discrete chromium sulfide phase. Mineral processing and hydrometallugical procedures are used to separate chromium sulfide from the other matte constituents. The products of the process are a chromium-nickel alloy suitable for reuse in the superalloy industry, electrolytic nickel, electrolytic cobalt, and an iron-molybdenum residue. Recovery of the principal elements contained in the scrap are chromium(Cr)-93 percent, nickel(Ni)-99 percent, cobalt(Co)-96 percent, molybdenum(Mo)-92 percent. Part II encompasses a preliminary engineering design of a pilot plant capable of treating 100 pounds(lb) of superalloy scrap per hour. Also included is an economic analysis of the operation of the pilot plant.

The utilization of large diameter drilled holes for mine shafts seems to have had its beginning in Europe about 1850 (28) where the mining industries of Germany and The Netherlands first used drilled shafts. Recent shafts in softer formations of diameters as large as 25 feet and as deep as 1, 700 feet have been drilled in both The Netherlands and Germany. The first shaft drillers utilized cable tool or churn drilling techniques which limit both hole diameters and drilling speeds. Though some churn drilling of shafts is still performed, rotary drilling has been the dominant technique for many years.

A refinement of the tungsten-cobalt phase diagram is presented for compositions to 85 at. pct cobalt and for temperatures to the solidus. Preparation of alloys by powder metallurgy methods is described, and the results of studies made by a combination of techniques involving microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and dilatometry are discussed. The existence of u-W6Co7 is confirmed (rhombohedral D85 structure). The W6Co7 phase forms periectically at 1,685&apos;115° C by reaction of liquid with primary W; the peritectic melt is at 71 at. pct cobalt. The homogeneity range of u-W6Co7 extends to both sides of the ideal stoichiometric ratio, through a compositional range of about 5 at. pct. The compositional limits for u-W6Co7 vary slightly below 1,471°±5° C, the temperature of the eutectic reaction forming u-W6Co7 plus a. The eutectic composition is at 79 at, pct cobalt. The existence of WCo3 is confirmed (hexagonal D019 structure). WCo3 forms peritectoidally at 1,093°±5° C by reaction between a and u-W6Co7 and exists over a narrow homogeneity range of 0.5 to 0.6 at. pct. The solid solubility of cobalt in tungsten is low (maximum 0,9 at, pct cobalt) and results in contraction of the tungsten lattice. Tungsten is extensively soluble in a-Co at higher temperatures; the a-Co lattice is expanded by the presence of tungsten in solid solution. There was no indication of the formation of a o-phase nor of any intermediate phases other than WeCo7 and WCo3. The WeCo7 and WCo3 phases are compared with similar phases in other systems.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines Reno Research Center investigated, developed, and patented a high-temperature cyanide leaching process for recovering platinum-group metals (PGM) from automobile catalysts. A batch pilot plant was constructed at the center and operated to demonstrate this technology to industry. Approximately 1,600 kg of used pellet, monolith, and metal support catalysts containing 1,700 g (54 tr oz) of PGM was processed. Forty-five-kilogram batches of used catalysts were leached with sodium cyanide solution at 160°C for 1 h in a countercurrent processing sequence. This selectively dissolved the PGM. Average extractions from the used pellet catalyst were 96 pet Pt, 95 pct Pd, and 73 pct Rh. Average extractions from the used monolith catalyst were 84 pct Pt, 81 pct Pd, and 66 pet Rh. Heating the pregnant leach solutions to 275°C for 4 h destroyed the PGM-cyanide complexes, causing over 99.7 pct of the PGM to precipitate from solution. The PGM precipitate was predominantly a metallic powder concentrate, typically analyzing greater than 50 pct PGM. Heating destroyed the cyanide to less than 0.2 mg/L free and total cyanide. Both the pellet and monolith residues were evaluated for disposal using the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
