In the summer of 1937 the authors began a series of time studies of the various processes employed in the' production of crushed stone. These studies, made at quarries scattered over the eastern and southeastern parts of the United States, have not been completed, but to make results available to the industry as early as possible it was decided to publish summaries of the studies made to January 1, 1939, as a series of progress reports. The first of these reports dealt with power-shovel loading and was issued as Report of Investigations 3461 in September 1939. The present circular discusses analyses of the time Studies of the haulage systems at the same quarries. OBJECT OF STUDY The pressure of business problems frequently requires the entire atten¬tion of quarry management and in consequence internal plant economies often are neglected, Also, operating officials absorbed in their local problems are prone to overlook possible economies that would attract attention immediately were they critically examining another plant. The authors felt that similar studies of many plants by impartial engineers would disclose possibilities for cost reduction or greater efficiency in internal plant processes.

An analysis of coal slurry pipelines was presented in our May 1976 study, Route Specific Cost Comparisons: Unit Trains, Coal Slurry Pipelines and Extra High Voltage Transmission (4]. The present study extends that analysis. The earlier work included technical and economic cost descriptions of the black Mesa and ETSI pipelines as well as some hypothetical pipeline routes. Water problems, safety and environment, required resources, and labor impacts were discussed at some length. Additionally, pipeline impacts on competing railroads, slurry-rail comparisons, and cost escalation. were analyzed. The difference in pipeline profitability to an owner-operator versus a promoter-builder was suggested. These aspects are not redone in this study. Here, we present a synopsis of the previous results and a general statement of coal slurry pipelines. Extensions of the arguments are presented where they appear warranted. New material is developed in the area of pipeline branching and tapping. This would appear necessary if slurry pipelines are to function as more than private lines; if they are, for example, to be responsive to common carrier requirements.

The Bureau of Mines has undertaken investigations to examine selected deposits of beryllium throughout the United States. The beryllium deposit about 6 miles southeast of Lone Pine in the Owens Valley region of Inyo County, Calif., was among those selected for study. In 1960, field work was conducted on the Inyo Beryl claim to determine the extent and character of the beryl-bearing deposit. This report describes the work that was done. In the area investigated, the beryl occurs disseminated in granite and limestone and as stringers. Apparently, the stringers are related to nearby pegmatite dikes, inasmuch as some appear to contain fine-Grained pegmatite. Granitic rocks enclose most of the stringers, which occur as fracture fillings, ranging from thin seams to 4 inches in thickness. The stringers are of muscovite, quartz, albite, and beryl. Some also include epidote and fluorite. For the most part, they are widely spaced. Therefore, mining of substantial tonnages averaging better than 0.2 percent beryl does not appear feasible.

"FOREWORDFerrograde manganese ore or its equivalent is essential to the manufacture of every ton of steel produced; although it is well known that there are large deposits of low-grade are in the United States, the production of substantial amounts of ferrograde material from domestic sources presents a problem that becomes more and more critical as the stockpiled ore depleted through inability to procure adequate supplies from foreign sources. Consequently, a program of laboratory,and pilot-plant investigation designed to solve the problem of obtaining a domestic supply of manganese has been undertaken by the Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines.This paper is one of a new series that include reports of results obtained in the various investigations conducted under the manganese program. The scope of the program and the organization that was set up to direct and supervise the were discussed in the foreword of the first paper of this series, Report of Investigations 3606 Manganese Investigations. 1. This Bureau of Mines investigation relates the physical properties of copper reverberatory furnace slags to changes in composition, The smelting of upper Michigan copper ore presents some problems that probably differ from those of other copper smelting areas. The study of these problems has, however, provided important data regarding slags in general and therefore will be of value to other operations as well. Conclusions reached from this study were: (1) Slag fluidity and refractive indices varied directly with the iron content and inversely with silica, lime, and alumina, and (2) there was no apparent correlation between slag fluidity and its copper content.

In 1983, U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized areas to determine the mineral resources in the Carrizo Gorge Wilderness Study Area (WSA). The 14,571-acre WSA, located 42 miles east of El Centro, CA, is underlain primarily by Mesozoic granitic rocks and pre-Cretaceous metasedimentary rocks. Six prospects were found within the WSA and two mines are adjacent to it. Mineral deposits within the WSA have had insufficient development and rock exposures for calculating resources. The WSA contains no identified mineral resources; however, further exploration may disclose gem quality minerals. Two mines adjacent to the WSA, the Pack Rat and Beebe Hole, have produced gem quality kunzite and aquamarine from pegmatite dikes. According to the owners, a significant amount of gem minerals have been mined here in the last decade. Based on past production and the characteristic minerals indicating gem-bearing pockets, additional pockets are likely. Similar pegmatite dikes occur from Mt. Tule to Carrizo Gorge and may contain gem-bearing pockets. Pegmatite dikes also occur in the WSA near Rockhouse Canyon, but contained few of the mineral associations indicative of gem-bearing pockets. Manganese occurrences north of the Beebe Hole and Packrat Mines and within the WSA contain low concentrations of manganese. Significant sand and gravel were not identified. There is no evidence of deposits of oil and gas, or geothermal energy.

An investigation of the quenching behavior of coal dust-air flames was carried out. The literature relevant to coal dust-air flames was reviewed, including information on the agglomeration, sedimentation, and dispersal of dust clouds. The simple equations relating the various concentrations involved in dust flame propagation are given and their implications elaborated. It is shown that the concentration seen by a moving flame in a sedimenting dust cloud can differ significantly from the concentration commonly measured in such experiments. The known dust cloud phenomena which appeared significant in flame propagation studies were experimentally evaluated, and quenching diameters, flame speeds, and lean propagation limits for several tube diameters measured. For Pittsburgh seam coal, the Minimum Quenching Diameter (MQD) for dust between 10 and 20 µm was found to be between 0.7 and 0.8 cm, and the lean propagation for 3.2-cm tubes to be approximately 200 mg/liter. Similar MQD data were also obtained for Pocahontas and Sewell coals, Beulah lignite, and a 50-gal./ton oil shale. The effect of temperature, coal particle size, and propagation tube material were also investigated.

Airy kind of a power system is a complicated network of various electrical components, such as cables, transformers, electric machines, circuit breakers, etc. For a system to work continuously and efficiently, each of the components has to be in perfect operating condition. The failure of any of these components can cause serious interruption of the supply and may in several cases involve a lot of precious time and labor in removing and replacing the damaged equipment it may also give rise to dangerous overvoltages on the system, thereby causing a safety hazard. Any piece of electrical equipment can have two likely modes of failure. The first would be the degradation of solid insulation material due to overheating, mechanical damage or a combination of the two, In this mode of failure it is possible that If the insulation damage is not an instantaneous phenomenon (a cable damaged by severe mechanical, Stress) that a detectable leakage current will do lop prior to the faint. The fault would probably he a result of heating and deterioration of the insulation by the leakage current.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 475 natural gas samples from 17 States and two foreign countries. Of this total, 454 samples were collected during calendar year 1971. The remaining 21 samples were collected during previous years, but releases granting permission to publish the analyses were not received until 1971. All samples were collected as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Thirteen previous publications have presented the results of 9,427 gas analyses prior to 1971. An important phase in the Bureau of Mines investigation of electrical machines designed for operation in gassy coal mines is testing enclosures of electrical components for explosion-proof qualities. In brief, this testing consists of filling and surrounding the enclosure with an explosive atmosphere of methane and air and then igniting the atmosphere within the enclosure to determine (1) Whether the resulting explosion is confined without discharge of flame; (2) whether the enclosure walls are permanently distorted; and (3) whether excessive pressures are developed within the enclosure. Ordinarily, the pressures encountered in routine testing do not exceed 100 pounds per square inch gage. Hence, the designer of the machine does not have too much difficulty in taking corrective measures to prevent flame discharge and distortion of the enclosure. Occasionally, however, the explosion pressures greatly exceed 100 pounds. Then the goblet of the designer may not be solved so readily, From experience over the year 0, the testing personnel often can predict that certain construction will result in high. Pressures, but, only in a very general way, has it been possible to advise designers what modifications might be made to reduce the explosion pressures to normal values. For example, if high pressures were developed in a motor starter having a partition with an opening through it, some enlargement of the opening may appear to be the logical procedure, but it has not been- possible to give information concerning the exact amount the opening should be enlarged to prevent development of high pressures .

Mining injury statistics show that a significant number of back, neck, and head injuries are linked to exposure from vehicle vibration. Use of a suspension seat is a common way to isolate the vehicle operator from the adverse effects of vibration exposure. Thus, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health1 – Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (NIOSH – PRL) performed laboratory studies on four passive and two semi-active seat suspension designs. These are typical of seat suspensions commonly found on large off-road heavy surface mining, construction and agricultural vehicles as either replacement or original equipment manufacturer (OEM) systems. One included a pneumatic (air bladder) spring mechanism. The fifth and sixth suspensions were a NIOSH magnetorheological (MR) semi-active damper design based on the pneumatic (air bladder) and one of the coil spring suspensions above. These suspensions were modified with a commercially available MR damper substituted for the OEM damper. These six seat suspension systems were tested and analyzed, for vertical vibration only, using the ISO 5007 Standard [1]. This paper describes the laboratory vibration tests using a MTS® shaker table and discusses the results obtained for the different suspension designs and highlights the rheonetic technology studied. Implications of the seat suspension designs relative to their capabilities for isolating vehicle operators from vibration exposure are discussed. Results for suspensions 1 through 3 showed frequencies of isolation from 2.1 to 3.0 Hz using the 40-kg (88-lb) mass and from 1.65 Hz to 1.8 Hz using the 80-kg (176-lb) mass. Suspension #4, in tests with only the 80-kg (176-lb) mass, showed an isolation frequency of 3.7 Hz. With the MR damper added to seat suspension #4, the peak transmissibility was lowered from 1.3 to 0.95 and showed a corresponding downward shift in frequency from 2.25 Hz to 1.4 Hz. In fact, the results for suspension #5 (the MR damper added to seat suspension #4), using test #3 conditions of the programmed control algorithm, showed isolation (attenuation of transmitted vibration) throughout the test frequency range from 1.0 to 6.0 Hz.

This report deals with information regarding a new Medium Frequency (MF) Wireless Communication System for underground mines. This new telecommunication system works on low loss electromagnetic wave propagation modes which allow it to provide quality radio communications almost anywhere in a mine. Tests show the MF system can provide improved safety and managerial control, increased productivity, better organizational team-work and reduced maintenance cost; furthermore, MF's unique design allows for easy installation at a minimum cost. This paper covers the following: 1) MF design plan, 2) Overview of mine radio communications systems, 3) Preparations needed for designing an MF system, 4) MF equipment, 5) MF installation, 6) MF design considerations, 7) MF design specifications, and 8) Recommendations dealing with MF system. Experiments in four mines are illustrated to demonstrate the success and viability of the MF system. The mines range from small (500 tons/day) to large (67,000 tons/day) capacity and represent several different mining methods. The MF Wireless Communication System represents an advancement in mining communication and the groundwork for other advanced mine systems.

"INTRODUCTION This report embodies the results of a detailed statistical microscopic examination of the ore and the mill products of the Silver King Coalition Mines Co., Park City, Utah.The study was conducted under the joint auspices of the United States Bureau of mines is cooperation with the University of Utah at Salt Lake City, Utah. The work was done in the cooperative Microscopic Service Laboratory, which was equipped by contributions from the following companies: Utah Copper Co., International Smelting & Refining Co., American Smelting & Refining Co., United States Smelting, Refining & Mining Co., Tintic Standard Mining Co., Silver King Coalition Mines Co., and Park Utah Consolidated Mines Co. The salaries and the other costs involved in operation of the laboratory were met by contributions from certain supporting companies. In addition to the regular personnel of the laboratory the Bureau of Mines contributed the part-time services of a microscopist-consultant to direct and assist with the technical work.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSThe authors acknowledge the courtesies extended by the Silver King Coalition Mines Co., through its general manager, M. The Chestnut Ridge Anticline is a prominent structure in southwestern Pennsylvania, USA. This structure has brought two economically valuable limestone formations to the surface, where they are easily accessible to room-and-pillar mining. Nine active crushed stone quarries, an underground research facility, and one industrial facility currently operate along the linear trend that represents the axis of the anticline. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has identified significant variation in levels of horizontal stress within relatively short distances at shallow overburdens along the anticline. At one quarry, the horizontal stress is high enough to shear strata with a modulus of approximately 77 Gpa. Conversely, zones of extension were observed in parts of another quarry, indicating very low horizontal stress conditions. This study found that high levels of horizontal stress are to be expected in this very stiff rock formation and that local geologic and topographic structures are capable of altering the magnitude and possibly the orientation of the horizontal stress field.

"INTRODUCTION For the last several years the oil industry has been turning more and more toward conservation arid the study of related production problems. It is generally conceded that ultimate recovery is increased by holding the natural gas in thy sand which is net needed in lifting the oil. The retained gas lowers the viscosity and surface tension of the oil and helps flow the oil from the sand. Lewis states that ""while the operator can not control the original conditions of energy and resistance in the sand, he can partly control the efficiency of expulsion. As it is the energy contained in the compressed and absorbed gas rather than the oil that is exhausted, it is but logical to judge the efficiency of a producing method largely by the relative quantities of gas produced with each barrel of oil. If by a change in method the producer lessons the proportion of gas with each barrel of oil, he should increase the total recovery- of oil correspondingly, even if the rate of production is temporarily reduced somewhat.""The effect of ""pinching in"" or controlling the flow of oil wells in an effort to lessen the proportion of has never been definitely known. The general belief has been that ""pinching"" a flowing well causes the oil and gas volumes to be reduced proportionately, maintaining the same gas-oil ratio as before the reduction in flow was made. Studies of gas-oil ratios in many fields have shown that much gas has been wasted, insofar as its effectiveness in oil production is concerned. Swigart and Bopp carried."

"Sillimanite, kyanite, and andalusite are aluminum silicates having the same chemical composition (Al2Si05) and are used in the ceramic industry for the manufacture of high-grade refractories. ""Natural sillimanite with added corundum or other alumina to just short of mullite 2SiO2) proportions is unequalled for jobs where strength at high temperatures, resistance to spalling, and resistance to slagging by acid slags is desired. High-grade porcelain ware also requires these minerals.""At the same cost, sillimanite would be preferred for most uses, but the lack of any large source of sillimanite has given economic preference to kyanite or andalusite for special refractories and high-grade porcelain ware.""3/The possible economic value of the sillimanite schist in the piedmont Plateau was first recognized by Dr. L. L. Smith, of the University of South Carolina, who published an article in the Engineering and Mining Journal, August 1943, on an occurrence of sillimanite schist in South Carolina.The Bureau of Mines was interested in developing a large source of sillimanite to relieve the shortage of high-grade refractories, and initiated a project to locate the ore-bearing areas in Georgia and South Carolina and to develop the most favorable ones.Two hundred and seventy-eight outcrops of sillimanite-bearing schists were found by a Bureau of Mines engineer.4/ The schist occurs irregularly throughout a belt extending from Talbot County, Georgia; to Spartanburg County, South Carolina, about 220•miIes long and approximately 15 miles in maximum width. The Bureau drilled four areas of the more coarsely crystallized schist in Georgia and South Carolina:In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon; chief; conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work; and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch;.R. G. Knickerbocker; chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director."

Operations involving the processing of coal, oxygen, and steam into synthesis gas by means of two pressure-type gasifiers have demonstrated the effect of heat loss and operating variables on carbon gasified and oxygen and coal requirements. Carbon gasified is the fraction of carbon in the coal that is converted to gas. Oxygen and coal requirement is the quantity of each that is needed to produce a unit volume (M std. c.f.) of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Operating pressure of the gasifiers ranged from 150 to 300 p.s.i.g. and coal was fed at 200 to 500 lb./hr./cu.ft. of reaction-zone space. Oxygen-to-coal ratios were 8.5 to 10.5 std. c.f./lb. Heat loss and residence time have opposite effects on carbon gasified; increasing the heat loss decreases the carbon gasified, but increasing the residence time (by raising the operating pressure or reducing the coal-feed rate) increases the carbon gasified. The effects of these two factors are difficult to separate because they usually change simultaneously. A comparison of the results obtained from the operation of two gasifiers with different levels of heat loss, however, permitted the effect of heat loss to be separated from that of pressure and coal-feed rate. When the results were deter- mined on the basis of constant heat loss, increase of the residence time increased the carbon gasified until the reaction virtually had come to completion. For example, at 150 p.s.i.g., decreasing the coal-feed ratio from 500 lb./hr./cu.ft. to 200 lb./hr./cu.ft. substantially increased the carbon gasified. At 300 p.s.i.g., however, changing the coal-feed rate had little effect on the carbon gasified because the reaction had almost reached completion and further increase in residence time resulted only in a negligible change.

An instrument using a gamma-ray backscatter technique for determining the weight-percent incombustibles content of coal dust and rock dust mixtures in coal mines has been built and tested. The unit gives a direct readout in per-cent incombustibles for coal mine dust mixtures containing between 50 and 100 percent incombustibles; calibration of the device requires using a sample of the rock dust employed; this is usually limestone but occasionally dolomite or gypsum. A small americium-24l source is used with a scintillation detector whose output feeds a rate meter. The source-detector geometry used was chosen to reduce the effects of variation in bulk density. Accuracy of the system is within ±3 percent for most mixtures. The instrument is portable and completely self-contained; the rechargeable batteries supply power for 300 to 400 determinations.
