The Bureau of Mines is developing melting data for binary combinations of the alkaline earth fluorides and yttria to facilitate the formulation of slag compositions. The present report deals with the CaF2-Y203 system for which solidus and liquidus temperatures and solid solubilities were determined. The information is presented as the phase diagram. All specimen compositions were blended from high-purity materials and encapsulated in Mo or Pt20Rh prior toheat treatment. Liquidus temperatures were determined by ceramographic examination of heat-treated and quenched specimens. Solidus temperatures were determined by differential thermal analysis and by electron microprobe analysis of quenched specimens. Terminal solid solubilities were derived by parametric methods. The peritectic system was found to be pseudobinary due to the formation of yttrium oxyfluoride at temperatures near the liquidus. The peritectic point occurs at 7 mole pct Y203 and 1,438° ± 5°C. The terminal solid solubility of Y203 in CaF2 decreases from 7 mole pct at 1,438° C to 1 mole pct at 1,100° C, and the solubility of CaF2 in Y203 decreases from 9.5 to 7 mole pct over the same temperature interval.

The periphery of longwall panels in the Pocahontas No.3 coalbed is characterized by a zone of reduced permeability that inhibits the natural drainage of methane. A residual gas pressure of 105 psig was measured after 1 year in an isolated block of coal measuring 340 by 1,100 feet. The buildup of gas pressure within such large blocks causes methane problems during plowing operations. However, natural drainage holes drilled during development have been found to reduce the gas content of the coal in this coalbed by over 90 percent. The effect of water infusion on dust during plowing operations was investigated using existing methane drainage holes. These holes were cleaned of debris and a pipe was grouted into the hole for water infusion of the panel. Both total and respirable dust levels were reduced by 40 to 79 percent. Water infusion of the panel proved more effective than did the use of a plow-mounted spray system.

"INTRODUCTION This is the third report of investigations by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with industry to establish the value of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of ferrous and nonferrous alloys. The manganese was produced by the Bureau at its Boulder City pilot plant from domestic ores and by the process developed by it. 4/ The work was done under the direction of R.S. Dean, assistant director, Bureau of Mines, and R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, metallurgical branch. The first report dealt with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of stainless steels 5/ and the second with its use in acid electric or open-hearth low- and medium-carbon steel castings. 6/The present report treats of the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of low—carbon rimmed and killed steels. A résumé of these three investigations and two others appeared in the magazine STEEL. 7/ Further reports will be published as tests are completed at some 70 industrial plants. All tests were made on full—scale heats or melts, and the resultant product was processed and used commercially."

This seven-chapter document is the first volume of a two-volume report that presents a comprehensive outline of coal-mine electrical power systems from theory to practice. Together, the two volumes contain the vital aspects that go into planning and designing a mine power system. After a short introductory chapter, Chapter 2 discusses the history of electrical use in mining and introduces "typical" mine- power-system arrangements. Chapter 3, 4, and 5 supply basic information on electrical theory, circuit analysis, and motors. Next, the Grounding and Distribution Chapters detail unique aspects of mine power systems. Elements of surface and underground use are included in all these chapters. An index concludes Volume I and is cross-referenced to both report volumes.

"In 1912 bauxite was discovered in the Andersonville district, which lies in the 28th and 29th land districts of Georgia and comprises parts of Sumter, Macon, and Schley Counties. Mining was begun in May 1914 by the Republic Mining & Manufacturing Co. Considerable ore has been produced in this region since that time by individual interests and by the American Cyanamid & Chemical Corp., which acquired the property formerly owned by the Republic Co.The area was examined in the fall of 1941 by representatives of the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey, after which a prospecting program was begun by the Bureau. Drilling was started on December 26, 1941, and continued until November 18, 1943. A total of 1,192 holes was drilled in the district, and 3,679 samples were taken and analyzed.Mineral exploration agreements were signed by 146 property owners covering 42,128 acres. Holes were drilled on 121 of these properties, which have a total area of 38,778 acres.Drilling under this project disclosed several new deposits, of which four have been completely delimited. Previous prospecting in this area by mining companies did not find bauxite, as it lies under heavy overburden. Work by the Bureau indicates 14,412,000 long tons of ore containing 30 percent or more alumina. The total tonnage is divided as follows:Georgia State Highway Routes 26 and 4-9 traverse the district. The Central of Georgia Railroad passes through the center of the entire district (see fig. 1).The project was initiated by J. R. Thoenen, supervising engineer, Non-metals Mining Section, Mining Division, Bureau of Mines. It was under his general supervision until July 1942, after which it was under the general supervision of E. J. Lintner and Rowe McCrae, district engineers for Georgia, South Carolina, and Flordia, respectively.John C. Feeley, Jr., was project engineer from December 1941 to April 1942. Other engineers who assisted in the work on the project are R. E. Babcock, T. M. Romslo, Don M. Coulter, and Walter T. Lewiecki.Acknowledgment is due the metallurgical staffs at College Park, Md., and Tuscaloosa, Ala., for analyses of samples and beneficiation tests.Acknowledgment is also expressed to Alfred D. Zapp, M. W. Harris, Elmer Kneedler,and Parke D. The mine system analysis and evaluation study presented in this report was part of the U. S. Bureau of Nines' Tertiary channel project conducted under the Heavy Metals program. The Badger Hill pit, located on the west end of the San Juan Ridge area, near Nevada City, California, was the site of the Bureau's field work. The objectives of this study were: (1) Determine potential alternative mining systems for some of the large tertiary channel gold-bearing gravel deposits, and (2) Identify areas of technology where further investigation would be merited because of their potential inclusion in a mining system for such deposits, The study involved the development of a mineralized block inventory, an economic block inventory, determination of optimum ultimate mining limits and a preliminary economic mining system evaluation. Computer programs were developed and utilized for each of the study phases stated above. The sampling program conducted at Badger Hill by the Bureau Delineation Group together with confidential drill hole data provided by the San Juan Gold Co. formed the basic gold values and distribution information from which a deposit model was developed. The deposit was divided into minable block units and net economic values were assigned to each block for various configurations of both open-pit and underground mining methods based on cost and performance data provided by the various Bureau of Mines Research Centers. A number of controllable variables such as: (1) Mining method (open-pit and underground), (2) depth of mining cut, (3) production rate and (4) equipment type and capacity were evaluated. The prime measures of effectiveness on which the mining systems where judged were discounted cash flow rate of return and maximum utilization of natural resources. The analysis showed that underground mining of the Six-Mile Tertiary channel gold-bearing gravel deposit under consideration was uneconomical and did not permit maximum recovery of the resources within the channel. It was also apparent that mining the Six-Mile Deposit for gold alone is uneconomical or at best marginal at a gold price less than $80 per ounce. The analysis showed that the potential for an economic mining operation within the Six-Mile Deposit exists when the gravel resources of the channel are considered together with the gold. It was determined that the highest rate of return would be realized with a 20-year open-pit mining operation yielding 745,000 ounces of -gold and 55 million cubic yards of usable gravel.

This is the final report on Contract H0220049 covering the period from 27 April 1972 to 30 April 1974. The objective of the contract was to develop and evaluate materials and methods to achieve post explosion identification of explosives reliably and economically through the use of phosphor coded grains incorporated into the explosive during its manufacture. A coding system of two spotting phosphors and seven coding phosphors was successfully developed during the execution of the contract. The ability of the coded grains to survive detonation in many different types of explosives was demonstrated and the complete code was extracted from a single 100 micron post-explosion fragment. A method was established for testing grain strength to correlate with field test results and an optical system was designed for extracting the code from the grains. Also in fulfillment of the contract requirements a laboratory method for manufacturing the coded grains was established and ten one-pound samples, each with a different code, were fabricated. Finally, a method was developed for applying a coating of polyethylene to the grains to prevent sensitization of the tagged explosives and the ten one-pound samples were coated and delivered to the Bureau of Mines.

This study traces the development of the bucket-wheel excavator, points out the differences in the German- and American-type wheels, and gives the major design criteria and the advantages and disadvantages of bucket-wheel operations. A computer program, written in FORTRAN IV for use with an IBM 360 computer, simulates the operation of the digging components of a bucket-wheel excavator. By supplying certain mining dimensions, soil characteristics, and machine design specifications, this program will print out a time study of the various components of an operation, power calculations for the operation, and production data. This program, when combined with a truck, belt, or rail program, should be helpful in planning a complete mining system In material suitable for a bucket-wheel excavator operation.

Simulation continues to hold the spotlight among the Operations Research applications in the operational side of mining. One reason for this is the need to solve the many waiting line and storage problems common to the industry. A second reason for using simulation is the central requirement of retrospect testing. Acceptance of a model by management is more likely to depend on its tested performance rather than on the underlying validity aspects of the model itself. Mathematics have not been and may not be developed that will allow all desired system elements to be considered simultaneously. It is in this realm that simulation bridges the gap between theory and useful design procedures. One of the earliest published accounts of simulation at work in the coal industry is demonstrated by the application cf Monte Carlo methods to explore changes in future operating policies for an existing track system (Manula, 1963). By modifying certain control parameters, revision in design changes were evaluated in the computer rather than in the actual production section. A second application which has found wide use in practice is the VFI-OCR Face Simulator (Prelaz et al., 1968). The model developed here has the purpose of allowing the comparison of methods for room-and-pillar face operations end observing their effect on mining prior to actual installation. Proposed changes are tried in the model and the best of these are selected as a guide for better mire management: IBM's own simulation package, the System 360 General Purpose Simulator, has experienced heavy use in solving similar problems and other steady-state situations.

This report, rather than attempting to replace previous annual reports, supplements, and more importantly, coordinates and summarizes the entire effort. Even with such restrictions, the report is voluminous and, therefore, a decision has been made to divide it into two parts. The first volume is basically narrative and includes tabular results and analyses. The second volume is in appendix form giving detailed information. Together, they permit a logical discussion of all aspects of the project (Volume I) without cumbersome distractions but, at the same time, provide all the details to permit others to evaluate and explain the results or develop similar research programs (Volume II). The aim of the original proposal was basically to develop instruments and techniques and then make measurements of suitable power parameters, ground fault currents and ground resistance beds. With such information available, it was possible to develop a meaningful simulator which would permit investigating electrical systems and components on paper without costly trial and error procedures in the third year, a cable splice testing program was added to the project. While there were the usual delays attendant in such original research, these objectives were achieved.

With the development of larger mine-haulage trucks in recent years, the visual field of the driver has diminished correspondingly. Specifically, the operator's lack of direct vision in the right front area and directly to the rear constitutes a serious hazard to personnel in nearby small utility vehicles. Recently developed electronic technology has made it possible to supplement the use of mirrors and fresnel lenses to warn the operator of specific collision dangers in the truck's blind areas. This Bureau of Mines report describes the results of a coordinated contract and in-house research program to develop and test in-mine prototype electronic systems to detect the presence of smaller vehicles within the blind areas of large mine-haulage trucks. Each system utilized transmitters installed on the smaller vehicles and receivers installed on the haulage trucks. Transmitting techniques tested included both low-and high-frequency radio waves. On-vehicle testing established the engineering feasibility of each approach. Further private sector product development to improve reliability and reduce system costs is recommended. Mining companies should consider the advantages of each type of system.

Approximately 2,500 tons of low-grade uranium ore were used to conduct a field-scale heap leaching test as well as throe column leach tests. The ore used to construct the field-scale heap leaching test had a grade 0.023% U308 while the ore used fur column leach tests had a grade of 0.027% U308. The ore was crushed to minus 4 in. The field-scale heap was constructed on a clay base with parallel effluent lines running under the heap spaced 7.5 ft apart. The heap was leached for 45 days, drained, washed, and dismantled. Based on residue analysis, approximately 205 tons of ore were leached with a final U308 extraction of 96%. The heap was 17.9 ft in height and leached in a near-vertical pattern down to approximately 1 ft, at which point the leached zone become bell-shaped. Two 8-ft column charges and one 18-ft column charge were leached for 36 and 45 days, respectively. Based on residue analyses, all U308 extractions were greater than 96%. The conclusions generated by the studies showed that (1) flow rates were similar for column leaching and field-scale leaching, (2) final U308 extractions were the same for both types of leaching; however, the deeper ore beds tended to require longer leaching times, and (3) the reagent requirements were reduced with increased bed depth.

The Bureau of Mines is in the process of degasifying a virgin area in northern West Virginia from the base of an 839-foot-deep vertical borehole¬. An in situ gas pressure hole 199 feet long, and seven degasification holes ranging in depth from 500 to 850 feet (average 618 feet) were drilled in an 8-foot-thick virgin Pittsburgh coalbed from the enlarged (14-foot-diameter) bottom of this borehole. The in situ pressure at the back end of the hole and the range of gas and water flows from degasification holes as they were completed and closed off were 203 psi, 79,000 to 257,000 cfd (average 160,000 cfd), and 5 to 8 gpm per hole (average 6.8 gpm), respectively. Twenty-four hours after the seven holes were connected through individual water traps to a common collector for natural venting of the gas through pipes to the atmos¬phere, the total gas and water flows and the in situ pressure dropped, respec¬tively, to 971,000 cfd, 1.3 gpm, and 18 psi. Eighty days later the correspond¬ing values dropped to 529,000 cfd, 0.50 gpm, and 13 psi. After 180 days of degasification, 91 million cubic feet of gas had been removed from the affected virgin area. This represents 60 to 70 percent of the gas calculated to be contained in the area of coal affected by the holes.

The purpose of this study was to develop procedures to measure Bingham flow properties for mine tailings and to use these to predict the possible consequences of a hypothetical tailings flow failure at the Tenmile Tailings Pond at Climax, Colorado. The consequences of such a failure were found to be minimal, and the failure itself highly; unlikely. Values of Ty (Bingham yield shear strength) and np (plastic viscosity) were measured for 10 materials using results obtained from vaned coaxial viscometer tests and triaxial tests.

The current list of permissible explosives includes 124 different brands. Fifteen of these are gelatinous, and the rest are the more commonly used granular ammonium nitrate type. Their rates of detonation range from 1,300 to 5,600 meters per second, and the weights of 1-1/4 x 8-inch cartridges range from 86 to 244 grams. The list of permissible blasting devices includes 1 Cobra, 2 Hydrox, and 9 Cardox models. All of these devices are based on discharge of high-pressure gas from a pressurized shell in a shothole. INTRODUCTION To be approved for use in underground coal mines in the United States, explosives and blasting devices must pass certain schedule tests prescribed by the Bureau of Mines. The explosives listed here were tested under Schedule 1-G,3 which has since been replaced by Schedule 1-H;4 the blasting devices were tested under Schedule 26A.5

The occurrence of tin-bearing gravels along Tozimoran Creek in central Alaska has been known for a number of years. In September 1944 the Bureau of Mines investigated an area approximately 1,000 feet long and 200 feet wide along Tozimoran Creek to deter-mine the cassiterite content of the stream gravels, which are about 4 feet deep and covered by 3 feet of overburden. Nine trenches and two shafts were excavated, from which samples of the underlying gravels were taken. This report contains a discussion of sampling methods and tables giving the results of analyses.

Methane and other hydrocarbon gases, byproducts of coalification, are emitted from coal at widely varying rates and often present ventilation problems during mining. The air in some coal mines apparently contains no methane. To determine if coals from mines which bid no history of detectable gas emission contained adsorbed methane, samples of coal at the shaft bottom and at an active face were obtained and placed in sealed metal cylinders. The atmosphere around the coal was sampled and analysed by gas chromatography. Methane, ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene, and butane were found to have been desorbed from these coals. Hydrogen and helium were also detected. An estimate of the amount of residual gas per ton A coal indicated that coal samples from the active face generally contained more adsorbed gas than coal samples obtained from the shaft bottom, although in both instances the total amount of gas was relatively small.

The overall objective of the subject contract was to investigate the application, economic, and safety considerations of electrical-shock prevention techniques applied to surface and underground mines. Volume I of the four-volume final report starts by summarizing all research performed, and synopses of the three other report volumes are included. The balance of this volume concerns one major task of the contract, the protection of maintenance personnel. After specifying the scope of work for the task, electrical is defined, and needed ground-fault relay characteristics to prevent ventricular fibrillation are established. This is followed by an analysis of alternating-current systems, a comparison of these systems with respect to body currents, and the advantages and disadvantages of the various ground-fault protection techniques. An analysis of direct-current systems for off-track vehicles is then covered. These analyses form the basis for the research recommendations which along with suggestions for future research, conclude the report volume.
