The Rhodococcus opacus microorganism was evaluated as a biocollector for flotation of barite. The electrophoretic behaviour of the mineral, before and after R. opacus interaction, was evaluated and showed that the cells adhesion shifted the mineral zeta potential curves. Adhesion tests were suggested a high affinity of the bacteria for barite. The experiments of the adsorption rate of the R. opacus on the mineral surface showed fast kinetics, achieving a maxim of cell adsorption after 5 minutes. Adsorption isotherm curves for barite could be categorized as Langmurian (L) type II. The best bioflotability results for barite achieved values around 75% for a R. opacus concentration of a R. opacus concentration of 250 ppm in the pH around 5.0. The studies were compared with the flotation of barite using a traditional collector. The bioflotation experiments were discussed considering the obtained adhesion tests. The results were supported by the Thermodynamic approach for selected pH values. The fundamental flotation studies showed the paramount potential that R. opacus presents as a biocollector and its possible application in the mineral flotation industry.

The chemistry of aqueous cyanide containing species in the presence of reduced sulfur sources was investigated. Reactions were studied as a function of time and tracked using novel analytical techniques developed for the analysis of the species of interest in the sample matrix. Species of interest in this work were ?free? cyanide, thiocyanate, cyanate, metallo-complexed cyanide, and various sulfur and sulfur-oxygen species. The studies were conducted under constant temperature conditions at pH values above 10.5 and in the absence of light in order to eliminate photochemically induced cyanide reaction effects. The reaction products of cyanide when in contact with pure sulfur, pyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, and cinnabar are reported. These data combined with data for cop-per, arsenic and lead sulfides, which have been previously published, are used to predict the fate of cyanides in refractory gold ores containing sulfides. A mass balance on the cyanide reaction products was completed for all experiments. From these studies insight into the chemical relationships of cyanide, the specific metal sulfide, thiocyanate and cyanate have been gained. When looking at the results of the experiments, it was immediately apparent that even though the overall conversions of cyanide to thiocyanate were different, most of the samples exhibited a similar pattern of reactions. The recovery of cyanide in these experiments was better than we expected, averaging in most experiments to be over 90 percent. Based on this research, the formation of cyanate was probably the main route of loss. The pathway choice for the various minerals was also elucidated in these experiments. The competitive oxidation pathways that cyanide can take have been tracked for sufficient time to determine the ?final? fate of cyanide in a process. Initially, it was thought that the cyanate may be involved in a hydrolysis reaction to form ammo-nia and carbonate ion, but upon further inspection of the data, there was not the drop-off in total cyanide recovery that would manifest itself were this to happen. On the other hand, the hydrolysis of thiocyanate to cyanate and sulfate would require oxidizing conditions which did not exist in solution at the beginning of the experiment. If the solutions were to be sufficiently oxidizing in nature for this to happen, the initial amount of cyanide would have been converted to cyanate quickly. The data support premise that the ?hydrolysis? of thiocyanate to cyanate and sulfate occurs to some extent in the experiments conducted. Knowledge gained from the experiments with pure metal sulfides helped interpret the results of experiments with refractory ores found in the State of Nevada.

This paper describes, in detail, results obtained from a research study of a complex iron ore aiming to produce a pellet feed concentrate with at least 65% of Fe and less than 3.5% of SiO2 in the final concentrate. The work includes an ore desliming followed by column flotation at laboratory scale. The ore sample was from Carajás province - Brazil and represents a complex low grade compact itabirite ore, analyzing 35.9% Fe, 45.1% SiO2 and 0.57% of Al2O3. Yet, the feed was treated previously by magnetic separation and grounded to 97% < 20 µm; this sample was named MAG 2. The chemical and mineralogical characterization of the MAG 2 sample showed that Fe and SiO2 grades were 50.7% and 24.3% respectively and was composed mainly by hematite, goethite and quartz. The particle size distribution, using a laser diffraction technique, showed that 90% of the particles were < 18 µm; 50% less than 8 µm and 10% minor than 1 µm. When the cationic reverse flotation without desliming was tested the selectivity of the process was very low and did not meet the concentrate metallurgical goals of the pellet feed product. However, when desliming was applied prior to flotation, a concentrate product with chemical characteristics of the pellet feed was obtained. The best results after desliming and column flotation achieved global iron metallurgical recovery of 72% with Fe grade in the concentrate of 66.5% and 2.1% SiO2 using starch as depressant for the iron oxides minerals at 1200 g/t ? 1500 g/t and an amine as the quartz collector at 100 g/t concentration (pH constant, at 10.5). It is believed that the desliming stage was key in the separation of the iron bearing particles and has a high potential for the flotation process of this type of ores.

Adsorption of Thiooxidans ferrooxidans and Mycobacterium Phlei on the surface of pyrite and galena was studied. From the experimental results, it was observed that Mycobacterium Phlei adsorbed preferentially on pyrite than on galena at neutral and alkaline pH values, while Thiooxidans ferrooxidans is not at all pH range, and the scanning electron microscopy photograph also indicated that. FTIR and XPS of two strains of bacteria indicated that there are much functional groups on surface of them, such as O?H, N?H, C-O, C?N, C?O etc, but S-O group occurred on Thioox-idans ferrooxidans cell surface and the P-O group appeared on Mycobacterium Phlei cell surface, and the content of C?O?H and C?O?C groups on Mycobacterium Phlei cell surface is higher than that on Thiooxidans ferrooxidans cell surface, this also been known from UVS investigation. The affinity of these groups to metal ions on sulfide minerals is able to explain the selective adsorption.

"The leaching kinetics was studied during leaching of indium-bearing zinc oxide to recover indium. The effects of temperature, sulfuric acidity, particle size, stirring rate on dissolution rate of indium were investigated. Results showed that the leaching process was controlled by chemical reaction at the condition of low sulfuric acid concentration. While the acidity increased to 1.8 mol/L, the leaching process was transformed into an internal diffusion controlling model . The corresponding value of reaction orders under low acidity and high acidity were 1.194, 0.156, respectively. Further calculation results indicated that the leaching reaction activation energy was only 10.97kJ/mol under the condition of high acid. The leaching rate constant was inversely proportional to the square of particle size, while the effect of stirring rate on leaching process was insignificant. The leaching process can be enhanced by increasing the temperature and acid concentration, as well as the decrease of particle size. And a final kinetics eqution was proposed. Synthetic water with a calcium concentration of 80 ppm and 500 ppm was prepared and the flotation results obtained compared to a simple electrolyte in order to determine the effect water quality has on pentlandite and pyroxene surface alteration and, ultimately, floatability. During the study, the possible effect of interactions between the minerals investigated and Ca2+ ions in the presence of sodium isobutyl xanthate was studied at pH 6 and pH 9 by means of zeta potential determinations, microflotation tests and ToF-SIMS analysis. The results obtained have demonstrated that water quality does play a significant role in flotation recovery at the experimental conditions used.

A red copper plate, discovered in the ruins of Dachengshan in Hebei province, was recognized as a forged one rather than a cast one, which means it was probably made from natural copper during the Longshan Culture period (2200~2208 BC) in the Chinese history. The copperware, found in the Niangniang Tai relics in Wuwei city, Gansu province, contains 99.6% copper and 0.4% Sn, Pb, Sb and Ni, which was guessed to be made during the Qijia Culture about 2000~ 1900 BC in the Chinese history in the late Neolithic before Shang dynasty. This shows that Chinese ancestors were able to distinguish, sort and use some native metals and minerals more than 4000 years ago.

The design of a hydrometallurgical process starts with the analysis of the raw materials to be treated, for example mineralogy, chemistry, deposit size are analysed. Based on this information suitable unit processes for pre-treatment, leaching, solution purification and product recovery are selected. Typically, process design for the new ore deposit relies on laboratory tests such as pre-treatment and leaching experiments. The experimental work is the most time consuming and expensive part of the process design. Reducing the number of experiments would shorten the time of designing a new flowsheet or development of new process technology. A large amount of information is available about the hydrometallurgical experiments and the amount is increasing continuously. For example, word search using ?hydrometallurgy? from Scopus database results in over 4 000 publications with the word in title, abstract or keywords. This number consists of 2 500 articles, 900 conference papers, and 90 reviews since 1972. The number of hydrometallurgical publications per year has increased from 13 in 1972 to 150-200 in the last few years. The objective of this study was to analyze how detailed data of experiments about the gold extraction is published and how that data could be exploited more effectively when designing hydrometallurgical processing for new ore. The leading idea is that similar ores should have the similar response in leaching. If the published information was used more efficiently, the amount of experiments would be reduced. More than 200 cases of experimental data of gold leaching have been analyzed for this study. There are over 30 factors that could be used in comparison when selecting process alternatives, but challenging fact is that not all these factors are documented in all publications. Results show that the usefulness of the published data in the development of hydrometallurgical flow sheet for gold using decision-support tools is not that straightforward. The quality of the published information about gold extraction varied between the publications and the descriptions of the raw materials, experimental arrangements and results were often missing details. Methods to normalize the data for description of the cases and a system to describe different features unambiguously are needed. With the environmental issues and water recycling becoming more significant, the development of deep cone thickeners has improved the efficiency of thickening. While deep cones performance is dependent on many factors, the sensitivity of an industrial thickener to each variable factor has not been determined. In this work, four industrial deep cone thickeners, which are used on tailings stream in Shahrebabak Copper Complex, were monitored for a year to analyze the effectiveness of different factors affecting the performance. Feed flow rate, fine fraction of the feed, solids concentration, flocculant dosage and concentration, solids density, pH, temperature and bed height were the factors investigated on the basis of partial R2 and partial correlation. Results indicated that, with positive effect, feed slurry dilution affected the dewatering efficiency most sensitively. With a negative effect, the sensitivity of dewatering efficiency of deep cone thickeners to flocculant dosage was negligible. While, decreasing flocculant solution concentration had a considerable positive effect.

Melting has become a popular pre-treatment method for municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration residues in Japan. Although the method is effective in stabilizing the hazardous organic sub-stances such as dioxin, it concentrates the heavy metals such as Zn, Pb, Cu, and Cd in a newly formed fly ash (melting fly ash). Melting fly ash is classified as a hazardous waste because of the leaching potential of these heavy metals in landfill environment. Extraction and recovery of these metals seem to be more environmentally and economically attractive than disposing the material to landfill after immobilization process. This study proposes a Carrier-in-Pulp (CIP) method as a new hydrometallurgical route to reject and recover heavy metals from fly ash. In this method, a carrier material which recovers the extracted metals is added simultaneously with fly ash to leaching solutions and is harvested from the pulp by physical separation method like magnetic separation or sieving. To demonstrate the effect of CIP method, shaking flask experiments were conducted under various conditions using NaCl solution as lixiviant and iron powder or granular activated carbon as carrier materials. In the CIP method using iron powder, more than 97 wt% of Pb and Zn were extracted from the ash to the solution phase. However, the iron powder which was harvested from the pulp by magnetic separation, recovered only Pb (more than 94%) through cementation, leaving behind Zn ions in the solution phase. Due to this problem, granular activated carbon (GAC) was considered as an alternative carrier material. Single- and multi-metal adsorption experiments using granular activated carbon were conducted as a preliminary study. Around 85% Pb and 88% Zn were recovered by GAC in the single-metal adsorption experiment, while 60% Pb and 70% Zn in the multi-metal experiment. These results showed that activated carbon was superior to the iron powder since it was able to recover both Pb and Zn through adsorption. The leaching test conducted on the residue after the CIP-Fe treatment revealed that the solubilisation of Pb was successfully suppressed to meet landfilling guidelines.

Batch wise adsorption tests for platinum (Pt) on the surface of activated carbon pellets (Norit RO 0.8 BET surface area 1100 mg/g) were carried out in mixed chloride solution. The purpose of this study was to assess and compare the adsorption performance of amine-treated activated carbons (AACs) and native activated carbons (NACs) in terms of adsorption capacity and selectivity. The effect of pH and temperature on adsorption capacity and selectivity was established. The amine- treated ACs were prepared by anchoring the amino groups (butyl amines) on the surface of AC pellets in aqueous media and the UV-Vis was used to determine the amount of amine sequestered from solution by ACs. The dosage of butyl amine on the surface of ACs averaged 0.15 g/g, carbon. The adsorption mechanism was described by the ionization and complexation model whereby interaction between the protonated AAC surface and the anionic chlorocomplex ions (PtCl5 [H2O]-, PtCl62-) proceeded by either electrostatic attraction or/and by covalent bonding [(NH3)2PtCl6 or (CH2COO)2PtCl6]. By comparison, the adsorption capacities of Pt on amine-treated ACs and native ACs were 53.8 mg/g and 33.03 mg/g, respectively which highlight the benefits of anchoring functional molecules on ACs. The selectivity of AACs was influenced by solution pH. Pt adsorbed selectively on the surface of amine-treated ACs at pH<1.5. The highest separation factor that was recoded pertained to Pt and Fe species (ßPt/Fe = 90) then followed by Pt and Ni species (ßPt/Ni = 30) or Pt and Cu species (ßPt/Cu = 15). The lowest separation factor was recorded for Pt and Cr ions (ßPt/N= 5). Adsorption kinetics of Pt on amine-treated AC surfaces, according to the first and second order reactions, were investigated and results showed that rates were in the order 10= 5). -4 min-1 and 102 g?min/mg, respectively. The pseudo 1st order kinetics predicted the adsorption capacity of 51.81 mg/g which was almost similar to the experimental value (53.8 mg/g) while the second order rate equation predicted Pt adsorption capacity of 40.1 mg/g. Both The Langmuir and Toth isotherm fitted the Pt adsorption at pH < 1.0. The Freundlich isotherm tended to underestimate the adsorption capacity of AACs.

The study involved two projects that will produce copper concentrate and may have their operations integrated. Transport by trucks, conveyor belt, and the equipment called RopeCon were evaluated as options for the ore transport between the sites. A rainforest stretch, that Vale S.A. demands to preserve, is situated between the projects. It was suggested to further review RopeCon because it presents minimal interactions with the environment. To design the preliminary system layout, a research was done on the rainforest cover height data, but the information found was scarce and imprecise. For preserving the local forest, the use of this data would conduct to the oversizing of RopeCon towers and, consequently, overestimation of its costs. For the acquisition of reliable information, a method was developed using local data acquired through airborne laser survey. The volume between the digital surface and terrain models was calculated to generate a surface representing the forest cover height. It was revealed, by plotting the points obtained from this surface, that 85% of the vegetation is below 25 m. This height is suggested to review the preliminary project with a more accurate design of the equipment towers, thus reducing its costs estimates. The method permits the precise location of the large trees, making easier to find a pathway, for linear-shaped facilities, that would minimize the creation of vegetation-free zones as a measure to protect equipments against falling trees and forest fires. Roller presses are widely utilized in mineral industry for fine milling and compaction. Recently used models are providing only limited information about the material behavior in the roll bite. This paper introduces a 2-dimensional finite element model for analyzing those two basic processes. A pressure-dependent plasticity model with linear elasticity was used as a constitutive model for the particular material. Coulomb friction law was used to describe phenomena on the material/roller surface interface. Two basic roller geometries are considered: smooth (used for milling and compaction) and with cavities, commonly used for briquetting. Comparison of the results obtained from the model with experiment indicates that they are following the general trends of experimental values recorded with laboratory roller presses. It is shown, that the model is suitable to analyze material behavior through all stages of the rolling process: feeding zone, nip region, neutral plane and release section. It can predict pressure, shear stress, slip of the material over the roller surface, material velocity field, failure of the compact during release and the course of other important process variables. This allows the process engineer to gain an improved understanding, leading to a better process and equipment design and control.

Theoretical study of the behavior of grinding medium presented by TBP (tetraballpebs) was conducted by computer modeling of the position of grinding medium at different speeds and different drum fill factor. For the modeling were used known equations of motion derived for the ball load. Algorithm was created by SolidWorks software, allowing determination of center of gravity of the load in the mill and energy for grinding. These results were compared with similar results obtained by ball grinding medium. The capabilities of both grinding media are demonstrated by graphics under the following conditions: 1.Equal dimensions of the experimental model of the mill; 2.Equal mass of the grinding loads; 3.Comparison of grinding bodies with the same number, mass and density. In Canadian oil sands processing, flotation is used to recover liberated bitumen droplets from oil sands slurries. Similar to conventional mineral flotation practice, a fundamental limitation of recovering bitumen from low grade oil sand ores is its slow and ineffective aeration of the liberated small bitumen droplets. Gas nucleation and cavitation could provide better mechanisms for accelerating bitumen-bubble attachment. A research program was undertaken to examine factors affecting spontaneous bubble nucleation on bitumen surfaces. The results demonstrate that surface hydrophobicity and existence of gas nuclei in process water play a critical role for bubble nucleation. While there are more bubbles nucleated on highly hydrophobic silanated glass surfaces than on moderately hydrophobic bitumen, bubble nucleation on clean hydrophilic glass surfaces is negligible. Heating process water up to 85 ~ 95oC (as used in commercial operation) or boiling tap water prior to gas nucleation tests is shown to remove sufficient amount of gas nuclei existing in the water, thereby drastically reducing the number of bubbles nucleated on bitumen. Enhancing gas nuclei formation in hot process water is identified as a promising strategy to improve bitumen-bubble attachment during oil sands conditioning, and hence to increase bitumen recovery from low grade ores.

In the present work, the influence of coagulant, polymeric flocculant structure type and mode of addition on flocculation performance and dewatering behaviour of plant mineral waste tailings of diverse mineralogy (kaolin, quartz, goethite/hematite feldspar, gibbsite, rutile, and Illite) is investigated. High molecular weight, non-ionic polyacrylamide homopolymer and anionic (acrylate) and cationic (quaternary acrylate) copolymers were used in orthokinetic flocculation of colloidal-ly-stable, aqueous dispersion of negatively charged particles. It is demonstrated that, through prudent selection and mode of addition of polymer structure types, synergistic effect between certain cationic and anionic flocculants can be readily achieved, leading to significantly improved dewaterability of the heterogeneous mineral waste tailings.

Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) operates an iron ore mine, three beneficiation plants and three pelletizing plants in Kiruna, Sweden. The current methods of separation in the beneficiation plants are wet low intensity magnetic separation (WLIMS) and reverse apatite flotation, where the WLIMS stage is regarded as the crucial part of silica separation from the ore. Currently, the high-grade iron ore deposit of Kiirunavaara has a low grade of silica in situ, of approximately 3.0% SiO2, but the silica grade is expected to increase in the deeper parts of the deposit with a complex silicate mineralogy. An increasing silica grade will affect especially the production of direct reduction pellets (LKAB DR Oxide Pellets), one of the main products of LKAB in Kiruna with an average silica grade of under 0.75% SiO2. The silica grade in the magnetite concentrate is normally limited to a maximum level of 0.55% SiO2 in order to achieve the required chemical composition in the pelletizing process. In order to study the possibility to reduce silicate content in the magnetite concentrate (pellet feed) in the beneficiation plants in Kiruna obtained by wet low intensity magnetic separation (WLIMS), enlarged mineral processing test work was carried out in the LKAB’s mineral processing laboratories in 2016. The test work consisted of comminution, low intensity magnetic separation and reverse cationic silicate flotation at laboratory scale, complemented by screen analysis, chemical assays and mineralogical investigation. The results of these mineral processing test work showed that the magnetic separation is not sufficient to reduce the silica content in the magnetite concentrate, particularly in the case of the high-SiO2 ore type B2-a. The reverse cationic flotation can be regarded as a possible solution to reduce the silicate content in the magnetite concentrate obtained by WLIMS and to achieve the required silica grade of less than 0.55 % SiO2 in the pellet feed. The results of this study provide a good basis to understand the behaviour of different silicates in the existing beneficiation process. Furthermore, it serves valuable information for development of new beneficiation processes and for investment in new equipment at the beneficiation plants in Kiruna in the future.

Surfactant plays a critical role in many industrial processes such as petroleum, mining, environment and food processing, and daily life. For ionic surfactant systems, adsorption of surfactant at oil-water interface imposes a net charge to the interface. The nature and magnitude of the charges at the oil-water interface depend on charge characteristics of surfactant molecules, concentration of surfactant and solution pH. In our previous study, zeta potential measurement of hexadecane drop-lets in industrial process water was shown to be a simple, yet powerful method for identifying various types of ionic surfactants present in the aqueous system. In this paper, the site-binding model was applied to prediction of zeta potential of oil droplets in aqueous solutions containing a mixture of cationic and anionic surfactant molecules. The total number of interfacial sites for various types of surfactant involved was determined by applying the Gibbs adsorption equation to the measured interfacial tension-surfactant concentration profiles. The distribution of various types of surfactant molecules at the interfaces was evaluated by Langmuir isotherm constants. With the ionization constant of surfactant taken from the literature, the predicted zeta potentials of oil droplets in surfactant solutions from site binding model were shown in a reasonable agreement with the measured zeta potential values.

"A worldwide decline in competency levels of practicing metallurgists over recent decades has become clearly evident and is a common topic of discussion among senior practitioners and professional associations. The associated impacts on the industry are material and include operational inefficiencies, missed optimisation opportunities and suboptimal new plant designs. There are many contributing factors to this condition. Decrease in competency is particularly evident both in regions where imbalance between supply and demand has led to a general reduction in experience levels for comparable roles over time and in emerging regions where a rapid rise in demand for practitioners has occurred in conjunction with rapid economic development and industrialization. The context, depth and breadth of education curricula and levels vary with location such that solutions to the technical competency dilemma may need to be developed specifically for each region with these influences in mind. Delivering, demonstrating and maintaining competencies are a critical requirement of undergraduate training and ongoing professional development. Other factors such as generational and cultural characteristics and expectations, political influences, role requirements and employment reward and recognition systems all play a critical role in determining if core competencies can be effectively developed, applied and subsequently maintained. This paper reviews factors impacting and some common approaches to competency development. The authors’ experiences in the management of professional development efforts within the global industry are reviewed and a blueprint proposed to address industry requirements in this area."

"The major losses of PGM and base metals in the beneficiation of platinum group deposits occur during the separation of gangue from the value minerals by selective flotation. A number of studies have shown that this negative impact on flotation is due to surface passivation, caused by various ions that may originate from the external water supply or, as is likely in the majority of cases, from the oxidation of the mineral surfaces and the grinding media. This investigation aimed at reducing surface passivation of pentlandite and inadvertent activation of pyroxene, thereby improving ultimate valuable mineral recovery and selectivity. Both synthetic minerals and plant ores were studied in order to determine the effect surface passivation and inadvertent activation have on mineral surface alteration and floatability. Zeta potential determinations, microflotation, ToF-SIMS (Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) analyses, laboratory batch flotation tests and continuous flotation testwork were used as tools to study the surface alteration and/or floatability.Zeta potential determinations and ToF-SIMS analyses showed that copper adsorption is non-selective. Both pentlandite and pyroxene become copper (II)-activated in the presence of copper sulphate and subsequently, in the presence of xanthate, adsorption of the collector will occur onto copper activated mineral surfaces. Zeta potential determinations also showed an alteration of the surface charge in the presence of polyphosphate, thereby inhibiting surface passivation of sulphides by slime coatings due to surface repulsion.The addition of diethylenetriamine (DETA) reduces the copper concentration on both minerals, predominantly on the pyroxene surfaces and polyphosphate further enhances the selectivity at pH 6.The microflotation and batch flotation data obtained has shown a significant improvement in the ultimate flotation response of valuable mineral recovery and concentrate grade compared to the standard reagent regime, while the continuous flotation results significantly improved the selectivity, however, at a similar ultimate recovery."
