"This paper describes the performance properties of a new 95 ksi minimum yield strength, oil well casing grade designed specifically to resist hydrogen sulphide stress corrosion cracking, SSCc. The new grade, Soo-95SS, demonstrates NACE Tensile threshold values greater than 90% specified minimum yield strength, SMYS, and NACE Bent Beam values in excess of 12.7 x 1()4 psi. The new Soo-9588 grade also exhibits superior collapse and notch toughness values. IntroductionIn recent years, a trend toward casing grade specialization has resulted in the introduction of numerous proprietary grades designed specifically for particular production environments, In response, Algoma Steel has developed, as part of a "" grade for service"" philosophy, two new 95 ksi minimum yield grades. The two grades are Soo-95, High Collapse (HC), and Sour Service (SS). This paper describes the development of Soo-95 Sour Service.Four main objectives were established:1. Definition of the steelmaking and continuous cast processing practices2. Determination of the acceptable maximum and minimum levels for all chemical elements3. Definition of special processing requirements4. Definition of the physical characteristics and ranges of the product properties.This paper provides a description of the experimental approach, followed by a presentation and discussion of the trial results . "Reductive leaching of cobalt (III) from a heterogenite bearing ore has been performed. Pyrite was added to the system and simultaneously bioleached in order to provide ferrous iron as reducing agent. Within such arrangement the iron ions are continuously re-circulated inside a Fe 3+ / Fe 2+ loop. As a result Co(III) is solubilized in the presence of Fe 2+ ions in concentrations well below the stoichiometric requirement. The ore has been initially subjected to acid pre-leaching in order to guarantee that the available Co (II) has been entirely removed. Two technological parameters have been studied to show influence on the degree of cobalt leaching: concentration of ferric iron in the inoculum and the presence of bacteria. The bacterial role could be mainly viewed in supplying ferric ions in the system which chemically react with the pyrite to generate ferrous ions used as Co(III) reducing agent. Co(III) dissolution has been less efficient when the concentration of total iron in the system was low, but also when microorganisms were absent. SEM observations on leached heterogenite have evidenced bacterial attack on the mineral; however the precise role of bacterial presence on cobalt (III) leaching is still to be elucidated.INTRODUCTIONCobalt accompanies quite often copper in secondary oxidized ore deposits (Rumbu, 2013). In such associations cobalt is found both as CoII+ as well as CoIII+ (Deliens, 1974). In contrast to cobalt (III), cobalt (II) is leached relatively easy in sulphuric acid solutions. Cobalt (III) when present in mineral form belongs to the heterogenite mineral group with a simplified chemical formulae Co2O3.H2O or CoOOH. The basic credo is that the managers make the decisions, and the hourly, and junior salaried employees do what they are told. Clearly this is the extreme case, epitomized by the long service shift boss who might say ""It took twenty-years to become a shift boss, and no miner is going to tell me what to do"" .There are some exceptions, two notable ones being Campbell-Chibougamau, and T.G.S. (now Kidd Creek Mines) which, in very different circumstances, decided on a more participative style.Campbell-Chibougamau, having closed down due to unprofitable operations, reopened, using a team structure with working leaders, and a system for sharing gains against cost targets with employees. Although the system has some problems, and development miners are bonused conventionally, this has been a basically successful program.Texasgulf Sulphur, a company with a history of non-union operations, and a participative management style, made a corporate decision to operate their Kidd Creek Mine in the same way. The orebody was rich enough to allow them the luxury to do this, but they have never had a strike, so perhaps they have more than saved the cost of the benefits and salaries they needed to pay. They also reward employees with a stock distribution scheme based on service and earnings."

LKAB (Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB) is operating underground iron ore mine, with three beneficiation and pelletizing plants in Kiruna, Northern Sweden. The wet low intensity magnetic separation (WLIMS) is regarded as the crucial part of silicate mineral separation from the ore. The Kiirunavaara iron ore deposit shows a rather low content of silica (ca. 2.3 to 3.3 % SiO2) but the silica grade is expected to increase in the deeper parts of the deposit. This can be problematic in the case of DR pellet quality with an average silica grade under 0.75 % SiO2. A laboratory scale methodology was developed for the systematic characterization of the ore for mineral processing with the focus on silicates at the Institute of Mineral Processing, University of Leoben. This methodology is combining mineralogical, geochemical and process mineralogical characteristics. Automated mineralogy (QEMSCAN) was used to study the modal mineralogy, the distribution of silicate minerals in different particle size classes after comminution, the deportment of silicon (Si) between various silicates and degree of liberation and intergrowth of magnetite and silicates. Based on the mineralogical investigations, actinolite, phlogopite and even quartz and albite are the predominating SiO2 bearing minerals in the ore. The important result of the investigations was the discovery of two separate subtypes within the high silica ore type B2 based on their mineralogy and mineral processing characteristics. The crucial part of the investigations of intergrowths and liberation of magnetite results was the magnetic separation tests carried out with the Davis magnetic tube. The binary intergrowths of magnetite and the silicate minerals (mostly actinolite) are the most common type of mineral association discovered. The significant characteristics in the intergrowths of magnetite and actinolite are the fine-grained magnetite inclusions in actinolite which may end up increasing the SiO2 grade in the magnetite concentrate despite magnetic separation.

Standard off-the-shelf mobile, portable, base-station and repeater equipment can be used. The equipment may need modification to be customized to particular end user requirements, but does not require a complete new unit redesign. Likewise, the cable TV distribution equipment is off the-shelf, with some items requiring modification for underground system application.Radio communications can be provided wherever the cable system is extended. Where traffic or type of activity warrants it, multiple radio channels can be provided on the same cable. Certain radio channels could also be used with data channels for control or supervision of remote equipment or environmental conditions. In addition, the same cable can be used to distribute or monitor signals from remote TV cameras in selected or dangerous areas. The system can be interfaced to a telephone system, if required, to provide extended communications to above-ground workshops, offices, medical stations or even hospitals and other emergency services.IntroductionReliable communications among personnel throughout an underground mine area have long been the dream and goal of various mine operations personnel. "Production from Canada's first diamond mine is planned for the last quarter of 1998. The climatic conditions and the variation in kimberlite types to be treated have lead to the development of a compact and flexible processing plant.High kimberlite moisture contents and winter temperatures below -40°C have dictated a process flowsheet with limited in-circuit storage to reduce materials handling difficulties. The latest developments in High Pressure Grinding Roll technology will be used to liberate the valuable diamond, reduce diamond breakage, and increase fines production to reduce the amount of material for down stream processing in the Heavy Medium Separation section.A varying heavy mineral concentrate yield has lead to the development of a final Recovery section that will incorporate Attrition Milling and Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation for concentrate reduction. The latest developments in diamond X-ray sorting will be used to produce a final diamond concentrate for mechanical sizing, weighing and packing.Fine tailings thickening will utilise Deep Bed Compression type thickeners. Abstract - BHP Minerals discovered the Archean lode gold ULU deposit on the western margin of the High Lake Volcanic Belt in 1989. The greenschist to amphibolite facies mafic volcanic and sedimentary rocks on the property are folded into a 5 km-long anticline. There is a close spatial association of Au-As zones to the trace of this F2 ULU anticline. The largest of these auriferous zones, the Flood zone, is localized at the core of the fold. The southeast-trending Flood zone consists of several anastomosing lenses that have been traced for 435 m on surface. Overall, it dips steeply (70° to 80°) to the southwest and has been intersected to depths below 600 m. The hosting high-iron tholeitic basalt displays a lower amphibolite mineral assemblage of ferrohornblende + plagioclase + ilmenite with accessory quartz and epidote. Alteration minerals include biotite, chlorite, hornblende, actinolite-tremolite, and potassium feldspar (microcline) with minor calcite, epidote, tourmaline, and titanite. The highest gold values occur where brecciated basaltic wall-rock clasts are replaced by acicular arsenopyrite + quartz + K-feldspar. BHP Minerals completed 54,783 m of both exploration and resource development drilling before selling the ULU property to Echo Bay Mines in 1995. Development of ULU as a satellite deposit to Echo Bay’s Lupin mine began in 1996. A -15% ramp was extended to the 155-meter level, and 16,011 m of underground drilling were completed before the decline in gold prices forced a suspension of activities at ULU in August 1997. The current owners, Wolfden Resources Inc., drilled 18,569 m in 2004 to increase confidence in the resource blocks. Following this drill program, a revised resource calculated by an independent consultant determined that the ULU deposit contains an inferred/indicated mineral resource of 1,130,000 t grading 11.34 g/t gold (373,748 oz) to the 360-m level. The portal was re-opened in 2005 and a prefeasibility study is underway.

"Batch flotation testwork demonstrated that a low-grade chromite ore from Bird River, Manitoba, was best floated at pH 2 using Armac C (coco amine acetate) collector and sulphuric acid as pH modifier. A grind of 100% minus 150 um was necessary for liberation, and flotation selectivity was greatly enhanced by prior desliming. A concentrate analyzing 24.2% Cr203 with a recovery of 90.2% was obtained, after three cleaning stages, from ore grading 6.05% Cr203. Total rougher collector concentration was 500 g/t and cleaner collector concentration 380 g/t. Similar grade and recovery were obtained during the pitot-plant evalualion, when a concentrate analy zing 22.3% Cr203 with a recovery of 93% (based on deslimed feed) was obtained for a total collector addition of 630 g/t.Selective flotation in a region of positive surf ace charge implies anionic activation, and a possible flotation mechanism is suggested.IntroductionIn an earlier study(1) of the beneficiation of chromite ore from Bird River, Manitoba, several methods of beneficiation were explored. These included ore sorting, heavy-media separation, and gravity concentration with flotation using Armac C (coco amine acetate) collector at pH 2, and sulphuric acid as pH modifier. Because flotation was not fully evaluated, a laboratory study was undertaken to determine the optimum parameters of chromite flotation. Optimization of parameters was established first on a laboratory scale followed by confirmation a t the pilot -plant level. Flotation of chromite using Armac C and sulphuric acid as a pH modifier has been reported as being selective for low-grade chromite ores(2)."

Understanding energy performance of existing buildings is vital to increasing their efficiency and reducing the overall energy consumptions. This entails facility managers to systematically monitor building energy performance and reliably identify and analyze potential problems. Currently, infrared thermography is widely used as a primary diagnostic tool for the detection of building performance problems. Nonetheless, applications of thermal images for building inspection are mainly restricted to manual and labor-intensive identification and qualitative assessment of heating or cooling loss. Automated identification of potential problems and reliable cost analysis of the associated energy loss can help homeowners to minimize financial risk of retrofits and maximize energy savings. To that end, this paper presents a new automated method for calculating the cost of energy loss for building diagnostics. In the proposed method, first, using a hand-held thermal camera, the auditors collect digital and thermal imagery from the buildings under inspection. Then, using a recently proposed method for Energy Performance Augmented Reality (EPAR) modeling, an actual 3D spatio-thermal model is generated and superimposed with a computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based expected energy performance model. The resulting EPAR model is placed into the method proposed in this paper for cost analysis of the energy loss. Through a new 3D thermal mesh modeling using k-d tree structure and nearest neighborhood searching, performance deviations between these models are automatically calculated. Using a temperature threshold, the areas associated with potential performance problems are detected in the EPAR model and are visualized using a metaphor based on traffic light colors. Then, the actual R-values of the detected areas are measured at the level of 3D points. Based on the measured R-values and the estimated air change rate for the detected air leaks, (1) the heat loss or gain caused either by poor insulation or air infiltration/exfiltration and (2) the associated energy costs are automatically calculated. The proposed method is validated on several locations of existing residential buildings. The preliminary results show the potential of the proposed method for minimizing the inspection time as well as the risk associated with the cost analysis of retrofitting potential building performance problems.

"This article presents four grinding simulation programs, written in Applesoft BASIC. The firs t two calculate residence time distributions (RT Ds) for open and closed loops mills. The third program calculates the select ion functions from the RTD, breakage function and particle size distribution (PSD) o f the feed and discharge. Two linear regression programs are also included to calculate the breakage function. These results are used in the fourth program to simulate continuous or batch grinding kinetics.The modelling approach presented is the size discrete, time continuous matrix formulation presented by Reid (1965) from concepts originally proposed by Epstein (1948). It is at the present time the most widely accepted phenomenological model of grinding kinetics and is standard textbook material (Austin et 01., 1982; Kelly and Spottiswood, 1982, p. 152). The concepts of RTDs and tracer testing originated from chemical engineering theory and practice, and are well presented in Leven spiel (2n d Ed . 1972 , Ch. 9) .Applesoft* was chosen because it is compatible with many micro computers. It is also one of the simplest and least powerful BASIC versions. Thus it can easily be adapted to other more complex BASIC versions.Open Loop Residence Time Distributions (Program RTDOPEN)As mixing, channelling, stagnation and short-circuiting all affect slurry motion in tumbling mills, transport characteristics are very complex an d cannot be derived from fundamental principles. Fortunately , as grinding follows first order kinetics, transport characteristics for the purpose of grinding simulation ca n be represented by the RTD of the slurry phase . It is normally determined using liquid tracers, as it has been demonstrated and is commonly accepted that in industrial ball mill s, the RTD of the so lid phase is particle size independent and equal to that of the liquid phase."

Outotec is continuously developing our existing process equipment and new equipment solutions to enhance the Flash Smelting process. Thanks to the long operating history of the Outotec Flash Smelting process feedback from the numerous operating references are available and is utilized. The general goals for development work are to improve equipment performance, thus realizing savings in Smelter plant operation costs by increasing the process efficiency and online availability. Digitalization also opens new possibilities for the feeding equipment and furnace operation monitoring. These solutions will improve the safety and performance of the smelter, and provide process and equipment related information which has not been available earlier. INTRODUCTION The year 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of Flash Smelting. The technology was operated on industrial scale for the first time at the Outokumpu Harjavalta copper smelter in Finland in 1949. The Flash Smelting technology, is now owned and developed by Outotec Oyj and the first plant, is now owned by Boliden Harjavalta Oy. The two companies have been evolving throughout history by optimizing the process for various feeds and raw-materials, as well as through developing the equipment and operating practices. Even though sustainability was not a hot theme/topic during the first days of Flash Smelting, it has nevertheless been the key principle in guiding the development. This is well proven by the wide adoption of Flash Smelting for the processing of copper and nickel concentrates, mostly due to its ability to fulfil the economic and resource efficiency criteria demanded by its operators. Along with the process technology development, also development of the equipment has taken place over time. Outotec is continuously working on developing our equipment to better suit the changing need of our customers in the continuously changing operational environment. Orebodies are getting more challenging with lower ore grades and more impurities. Achieving high recoveries for all valuable elements becomes more difficult with high slag quantities and with the need to tackle the high impurity concentrations. There is a need for higher capacities in greenfield and brownfield smelters. The role of the Loss-in-Weight Feeder, the Air Slide and Concentrate Burner is to ensure even feed into the reaction shaft of the Flash Smelting Furnace, and to enable controlling the process well, thereby enabling the best performance for the customers smelter. The design of the Flash Smelting Furnace aims for high availability, long campaign and safe operation.

"It is often reported that the concept of single-plane-fracture is not sufficient to account for the productivity from shale gas/oil wells. Many researchers introduce the concept of the stimulated reservoir volume to describe observed production behaviour. However, the characteristics of the stimulated reservoir volume are not well understood. In this study, to investigate the characteristics of fractures and surrounding region induced by the hydraulic fracturing, a devised hydraulic fracturing experiment was conducted using the cylindrical shale specimens in the laboratory.Two resins were prepared as the fracturing fluid for the experiments: cyanoacrylate, an instant glue, mixed with a fluorescent paint (resin A), and methyl metaacrylate, a thermosetting acrylic resin, mixed with a fluorescent paint (resin B). These resins were able to fix within the specimen after fracturing. This is because the present study aimed to only detect fractures induced by hydraulic fracturing. Cut sections of the specimens were observed under ultraviolet light irradiation. It is expected that the hydraulically induced fractures and the surrounding regions will be detected because the induced fractures filled with the resin should emit light, while the other parts will not.The specimens, which were collected from the Kushiro Coal Mine in Hokkaido, Japan at the depth around 275 m, were roughly 85 mm in diameter, 170 mm in length, and cored normal to the sedimentary planes. An injection hole with a 10-mm diameter was drilled onto the center of the specimen parallel to the sedimentary plane to simulate hydraulic fracturing in shale gas development. The experiment was conducted under a uniaxial loading condition of 3 MPa and the fracturing fluid was injected into the sealed injection hole at a constant flow rate using a syringe pump.After the fracturing experiment, the resins were fixed in the specimens and then the cut sections were observed under ultraviolet light irradiation. As a result, the hydraulically induced fractures, which were filled with the resin, are clearly observed. Detailed microscopic observations show that the main fractures are tortuous and are accompanied by many thinner ramified fractures. Additionally, fractured regions where the resin penetrates significantly are observed around the main fractures in the specimens fractured by the resin B. These induced fractures and fractured regions are considered to be the stimulated region in which permeability is improved. The necessity of estimation on the features of fracture tortuosity and ramified fractures is indicated for more accurate understanding of the well production and the stimulated reservoir volume."

In this context, direct smelting methods have again come into prominence. Consequently, the Kivcet Lead Smelting Process, which belongs to this group, has attracted the attention of the lead producers of the world. The Kivcet Process offers the advantage that lead and zinc can be simultaneously recovered in a single furnace unit. KHD Humboldt Wedag A G, Koln, Federal Republic of Germany, has signed a contract with the Sociedad Complejo Metalurgico de Karachipampa of Bolivia for the delivery of a turn-key Kivcet plant, which is expected to be the first plant of its kind in commercial operation. This paper describes the design and expected operating data of the plant."

"T.L. Leaching ProcessCommercial PerformanceSociedad Minera Pudahuel Ltda. (SMP) has been innovating in the copper producing field with the commercial application of the Thin Layer (T .L.) leaching process in its two operating division s: Lo Aguirre and La Cascada. Since November 1980, SMP' s Lo Aguirre Division has been producing high-purity copper cathodes at a nominal rate of about 16,500 metric tonnes / year, by mean s of the new route of T.L. leaching, followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning (TLlSX/EW). This has been the first commercial application on T .L. technology in the world, and the only commercial application in Chile for solvent extraction and electrowinning.By mid -1980, SMP acquired Sagasca Mining Co., renaming it as La Cascad a Division. The existing vat leaching facilities were modified to apply T.L. in the same old vats. The existing scrap iron cementation recovery circuit was kept running for the continuing production of copper precipitates. The modifications in the leaching circuit allowed shorter treatment cycles with a lower acid consumption and consequently, copper product ion increased from a previous historical high of 12,000-13,000 metric tonnes /year to a new level of about 22,000 metric tonnes/ year . These changes have been in operation since March 1981.T.L. Leaching commercial performance, both at Lo Aguirre (TL / SX /EW) and at La Cascada (TL/cementation), has been presented in several recent publications. Real operating parameters and process requirement s were reviewed in detail. A breakdown for TL / SX/ EW economics was also published based on Lo Aguirre' s performance during 1982(41."

"Commercial coal mining has been recorded in Nova Scotia since 1863 and during this period an estimated 60,000,000 short tons of mine discard containing 10 1030% coal has been accumulated, Approximately 70% of these dumps are in the Cape Breton region and most are owned by the Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC), formerly DEVCO.The explosion of oil produced energy costs which created an increase in thermal coal demand as well as the desire to rehabilitate abandoned mine dumps encouraged coal reclamation. CBDC was receptive to a proposal from the Selminco Joint Venture and encouraged the building of the Princess Recovery Plant (1980) and The Summit Plant (1982).The mine dump contains scrap, waste rocks, coal and substantial quantities of fine shale. The scrap and oversize are removed and the remaining material slurried with water to a density of 1.45. This extraction was associated with an estimated 60,000,000 short tons of discarded material. This mining discard and coal washing plant reject are located in numerous, varying sized dumps throughout the mining areas. Approximately 70% of these dumps are in the Sydney coal field region of Nova Scotia. The coal content of these dumps varies from 10 to 30% coal with an average of 18%.Energy CostsThe explosion o f energy costs in the mid-1970s greatly increased the sale price of thermal coal which made recovery of coal from some of the dumps economical. The environmental benefit of these operations will be the rehabilitation of the dumps upon cessation of the coal reclamation operation."

"Environmental concerns have recently been growing over the disposal of reactive desulphurizing slag. Consequently, increased pressure has been placed on the foundry industry to reduce the reactivity of this slag.To address this problem, Cyanamid has developed a new product which significantly reduces the calcium carbide content of the desulphurizing slag. Testing equipment and procedures have also been developed to evaluate both the existing levels of carbide in the slag and the decreased levels which are achieved with this new material.The development and use of this engineered carbide desulphurizer has made possible significant environmental and efficiency improvements in the field of calcium carbide desulphurizing. Consequently, the lifespan of calcium carbide in ductile iron desulphurization has been increased, as have the benefits of its use in the foundry industry. IntroductionIn the production of ductile iron, calcium carbide has long been used for hot metal desulphurization external to the cupola. Its cost effectiveness, reliability and ease of use have traditionally made it the desulphurizer of choice for a great majority of ductile operations. Recently however, environmental concerns have been raised regarding the quantity of calcium carbide remaining in the slag after desulphurizing. Analysis has shown that as much as 25070 of the weight of the slag may contain active carbide. "Overland conveyor systems to transport bulk materials from mines to processing plants or load-out stations have to be seriously considered as the viable alternative to truck and train haulage systems. With the ever-increasing price of diesel fuel, conveyors with their electrical drives generally prove to be the least costly when operating and maintenance expenses are analyzed for the life of the installation.IntroductionOverland conveyor systems are now considered as one of the viable alternatives which should be closely investigated when a mining company and its engineers initiate studies on methods of transporting raw materials from a mine to a processing plant or rail load-out station.This paper will generalize the overland conveyor and compare it with alternative handling systems. Each installation must be carefully studied to determine the best route, type of foundations river crossings; amount of excavation work for cut and fill, maintenance roads, etc. No two locations are the same nor are the principles of operation of an overland conveyor the same as those of a normal plant or mine belt conveyor. The proper time and effort must be put into the study of the system to evaluate the costs for comparison with other systems.The length of the overland conveyor depends on the layout of the mine and plant and the topography of the terrain between the terminals. Individual lengths may be up to 20 km, and a series of conveyors may extend 100 km or more.Advantages of Overland ConveyorsThe main advantage of overland conveyors is the low operating and maintenance costs which will be realized over its years of operation. Although truck haulage probably will permit lower capital investment during the initial phases of the mine development when the annual capacities have not developed to the design level, their operating and maintenance costs will be considerably higher. When evaluating the total costs per ton of material to be handled during the expected life of the operation and the projected increases for diesel fuel versus electricity, overland conveyor systems will generally prove to be economically more viable."
