"IntroductionThe development of British Columbia's northeast coal deposits, represents the single biggest industrial undertaking in British Columbia's history.As a result of this development, several thousand jobs were created, hundreds of millions of dollars in new tax revenue and billions of dollars in new foreign exchange began flowing into Canada.The Northeast Coal Development began in 1981 with the signing of sales contracts to ship a total of 6.5 million tonnes of metallurgical and additional quantities of thermal coal annually to Japan over a 15-year period. The current long-term agreements contain provisions for extension to 20 years.The sales contracts with a group of Japanese steel mills were signed by two Vancouver-based mining companies, Quintette Coal Limited and Teck Corporation. The agreements followed years of exploration and negotiation beginning in 1968.The first shipment of coal from Quintette and Teck's Bullrnoose Mine was transported by BC Rail and Canadian National Railways to the Ridley Island coal port in the fall of 1983."

"The object of this paper is to review electrolytic copper refining as it was in 1954(1), as it is now in 1984, and to comment on the many improvements which have been made in the last thirty years.In 1954, and even in 1984, the ASTM specification B 115 for cathode copper was 99.90% minimum copper plus silver content and 100% minimum electrical conductivity, IACS standard. However, to meet competition and to satisfy the requirements of the fabricators and the electrical industry, the electrolytic refinery must supply a product of 99.95% to 99.96% minimum copper content, and 101fJlo minimum electrical conductivity.The range of cathode impurities reported by 20 major copper refineries in 1954 are given in Table I.The much more rigid British Specification, DD 78, for high-purity cathode copper, specifies individual elements, as well as groups of elements, as shown in Table 2.The Svenska test has been replaced by a similar procedure which uses 2.r mm diameter wire. The ISO test is the one listed in the DD 78 specification. In Table 3, corresponding values for the Svenska and ISO test s are given for various wire bar coppers."

Discussions with people knowledgeable in the insulating material field revealed that materials on the market would be considerably improved if there was a greater meeting of certain very desirable criteria. Such criteria include: (1) the material should not burn, even at higher temperatures; (2) at an elevated temperature, the material should not give off toxic gases or produce smoke; (3) the material should have a low energy input; and (4) vermin would find the material unattractive. Theoretical discussions led to the conclusion that an insulating material made by foaming a mineral, preferably of a platy nature, with an inorganic binding system that could be converted to a rigid structure at low temperature would likely meet all the above requirements. It was also theorized that the use of microwaves in the converting stage would be beneficial in the creation of a cellular structure by aiding the foamer through creating vacules of steam. Talc was selected as readily meeting the theoretical mineral requirement and the material of Baker Talc Limited was used as the basic filler. The early results obtained led to an agreement between Americ Mines Limited and Baker Talc Limited pertaining to commercial production in a specific geographic area. It was recognized that due to the economics of shipping, the availability of the basic filler material should be geographically widely spread. Samples of materials were requested and many received from all over North America and one from Britain. Enough work has been done to show that they respond to the basic process in a similar manner as the Baker Talc material. From the data acquired, it is considered that the process is applicable for the production of loose fill insulation, moulded insulation for pipes and structural steel, ceiling tile, batts, sheet and for incorporation into other products such as various roofing board materials. Sufficient development has been done to enable a budget to be prepared for the construction and operation of a loose fill insulation plant.

A pyritic Zn-Pb-Cu ore waspercolation leached with acidified ferric sulphate solutions; zinc and copper were leached, lead was oxidized, but not dissolved, and pyrtte was essentially unattacked. High zinc extractions were achieved after a few months leaching, and substantial zinc solution concentrations could be produced by recycle of the oxidized solution. The leaching rate was generally controlled by the transport of the ferric sulphate oxidant. Zinc extractions increased with increasingferric ion concentration or flow rate, but were essentially independent of the concentrations of sulphuric acid, ferrous sulphate, cupric sulphate or chloride ion. The leaching rates were insensitive to the height of the ore column once a minimum height had been exceeded (0.8-1.0 m). Elemental sulphur was the principal sulphidic reaction product, but variations in the ratio of sulphur to sulphate produced anomalous temperature effects.

"Late in 1981, a six-rope friction hoist was installed in the Number 2 shaft at Les Mines Seleine Inc. on the Madeleine Islands in Quebec. This paper deals with the reasoning behind the selection of hoisting equipment from the economical point of view, safety point of view, future needs point of view, etc.After establishing the basic parameters for the hoisting system, features of the most common types of hoists (i.e. single-drum hoist, double-drum hoist, Koepe hoist) are briefly laid out. The reasons for selecting a friction (Koepe) hoist are summarized. However, why go for a six-rope hoist rather than the (in North America) more common four-rope hoist? As the subject hoist is the first six-rope hoist in Canada, this question is studied in more detail, covering initial cost, maintenance cost, etc., as well as practical aspects, such as safety, physical dimensions, etc.In summary, experiences from other multi-rope hoist installations world-wide are presented.BackgroundIn 1980, Seleine Mines Inc. was established as a subsidiary of SOQUEM. The new mining company was to develop and operate a salt mine and associated harbour on the Madeleine Islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The Madeleine Islands form part of the Province of Quebec. The mine has a planned annual output of 1.2 million metric tonnes of salt, with reserves in sight for over 20 years. Mining will be by room and pillar, with an underground primary crusher and treatment plant. From the underground treatment plant, the salt will be transferred via conveyors to a 5.5-metre-diameter circular shaft and hoisted to the surface. Surface transportation to the warehouse will again be via conveyor, and a conveyor will also transport the salt from the warehouse to the point of shiploading."

"In order to determine its capabilities and to aid in the interpretation of fie ld results, a scale model study and field tests were carried out on the Crone borehole pulse electromagnetic (PEM) system. The model results indicate that if a borehole passes in the vicinity of a tabular conductive body, the system will not only detect the presence of the body, but will also return information as to its conductivity-thickness product, size, altitude and position.The effect of variation of these electromagnetic and geometric factors on the shape of the response curve from a borehole PEM survey is displayed by a number of suites of scale-model response curves. These model curves can be used directly as type curves in the interpretation of field results. Field tests of a prototype PEM system provide a check on the scale-model results and also summarize the procedure of interpreting field data using the model type curves.The borehole pulse EM system can be effectively used as a follow-up geophysical instrument for locating and delineating known conductive bodies. It can also be profitably utilized as a primary geophysical exploration tool in areas of deep mineralization below the depth limit of conventional airborne and ground geophysical systems. The probed area of a diamond drill hole in these cases is increased from a 1- inch drill core to a zone extending hundreds of feet from the hole."

"This paper describes the operations of the open pit and emphasizes particular aspects of Les Mines Selbaie. The open pit as well as its related services were incorporated into a complex which includes an underground mine and a concentrator. The equipment was chosen with the objective of auto-sufficiency during each phase of mining. The paper outlines the organization and the methods used in each step of mining, notably: drilling, blasting, loading, transporting and crushing. The responsibilities of the Engineering Department are also outlined from the conception of the open pit to the latest follow-up methods. A short resume of the results which have been obtained as well as suggestions for improvement are provided.Layout in Consideration of Main SiteThe A-I zone deposit is located I km from 8 zone. Open pit mining of A-I zone required the regrouping of different services to those already existing.I. The crusher was placed in an area close to the concentrator in order to minimize the length of the conveyors and to provide space for the crushed ore reserves (50000 tonnes).2. The location of the service building (warehouses, mine offices, maintenance, engineering and geology) raised a few problems. Because of the multiple services provided therein , it was impossible to fulfill all the requirements, and the garage in itself is located a fair distance from the pit. Added to this inconvenience is the fact that heavy equipment regularly travels throughout the main yard.3. The storage of explosive magazines has been changed to obtain more surface space and meet government regulations.4. A space has been provided for minor repairs in the garage used during exploration. A trailer was installed next to the garage to provide a lunch room for the employees working at the open pit."

"In January 1981, Quintette Coal Limited (QCL) signed a 2a-year coking coal sales agreement with the Japanese Steel Industry which was followed by the commencement of mining operations in October 1982 and preparation plant operation in November 1983. During the mine 's startup, the town of Tumbler Ridge, the Anzac rail spur line, coal port facilities at Ridley Island plus numerous related elements of infrastructure were completed to support QCL and the neighbouring Bullmose operation in northeastern British Columbia. QCL's annual product coking coal levels have accelerated from 2.9 to 5.2 Mt between 1984 and 1986 with related increases in total mined volume from 14.8 to 41.0 M BCM between 1983 and 1986. This paper presents an overview of QCL 's current operation and related infrastructure. Development BackgroundDuring the 1970s, the Japanese Steel Industry (JSI) was forecasting a steady and significant growth in its steel production. By 1980 they were expecting crude steel production to increase from about 105 Mt in 1980 to 125 Mt by 1985 and almost 140 Mt by 1990.Discussions between Quintette Coal Limited (QCL) and the JSI for the development of the QCL project began in the 1970s and continued over a period of several years. During that time detailed and regular meetings took place, at which technical and commercial presentations were made to the JSI. The geology of the project area and the alternative mining methods and sequences were studied in detail. The new rail line which would connect the mine to tidewater was a critical factor and received particular attention. Alternate routes for the rail line from Tumbler Ridge to Prince George were the subject of much detailed study and discussions. The Anzac route was chosen in the best long-term interest of the northeast area development, after careful consideration and advice from the Japanese side.The new bulk coal terminal on Ridley Island at Prince Rupert was also a key factor and completed the development of an independent and new major coal field to supply the JSI. The QCL project and the development of the northeast area of British Columbia was a major strategical initiative of the JSI. It provided Japan with an important new coal field which was both self-sufficient and distinct from the traditional Japanese coal field resources in southern Canada, Australia, and the United States."

"The Western Research Centre (WRC) of CANMET operate a unique pilot plant facility where ongoing R&D on coal preparation and mineral processing is conducted. The pilot plant carries out two functions: coal preparation processing using state-of-the art technology and coal-liquid mixture preparation with intensive cleaning circuits that can also be used for mineral processing. In total, the pilot plant includes more than 30 different flowsheet options. The facility is dedicated to small and fine coal, and designed to be flexible and versatile.This paper describes the use of a pilot-scale facility as a research tool for process control development, fine coal beneficiation, development of coal-liquid fuels technologies, development of process models and testing and evaluation of new developments. The pilot plant is used to assist in resource development by evaluating and optimizing flowsheet selection, and producing sufficient samples for utilization tests. The facility is also an important tool for evaluating and testing samples from troublesome circuits of operating plants to find means to optimize and improve recovery, particularly of fines circuits.Detailed examples are given to demonstrate the role of a pilot scale facility in coal preparation R&D, coal industry development and optimization of coal processing operations. These examples include the development of heavy-medium cyclone computer control system, detailed evaluation of beneficiation of a coal deposit with high clay content, development of column flotation, and its role in fine cleaning circuits and treatment of ultra-fines in relation to intensive cleaning, the importance of testing coals in different processes, and cleaning processes influence on coking quality and other utilization applications. The potential of the facility for helping the mineral industry is also described."

Elle doit atteindre une profondeur de 360 m (l, 180 pi) sous Ie fond de la vallee , avec des murs hauts de 360 à 490 m et des pentes moyenne de 44°. Le rythrne d'extraction est actuellement de 85,000 tonnes par jour.Dans Ie cadre des etudes entreprises par les Services Techniques de la Division Mines Gaspé, la compagnie Géomines Ltée a été consultée pour étudier les conditions hydrogéologiques et hydrologiques locales et participer a la conception d'un système de drainage superficiel et souterr ain. "A mineral processing investigation to recover chromite was performed at Lakefield Research, under the guidance of CANMET personnel, on a 70 tonne ore sample from the Bird River deposit in Manitoba. In the laboratory phase a flowsheet was developed which involved grinding, gravity separation and flotation. The gravity concentrates were upgraded by magnetic separation and the flotation concentrates by gravity concentration . Pre-concentration by electronic ore sorting, magnetic separation and heavy media separation also was examined.The developed flowsheet was applied on a pilot-plant scale in the second phase of the testwork to the ore as received, and to ore pre-concentrated by electronic ore sorting and magnetic separation. Ore pre-concentrated by heavy-media separation was treated on a laboratory scale based on the pilot-plant flowsheet ,Processing the are as received resulted I n 77% recovery of chromite in a concentrate analyzing 30% Cr20 J; processing are pre-concentrated by electronic are sorting resulted in 64% recovery of chromite in a concentrate analyzing 30.5% Cr20J."

Orano Canada Inc. (Orano) operates the McClean Lake mill in northern Saskatchewan, processing high concentration uranium ore, delivered in slurry form, from the Cameco operated Cigar Lake mine. This slurry is ultimately processed into the purified uranium oxide product known as calcined yellowcake. During the calcining process, sulphate (SO42-) entrained in the yellowcake undergoes thermal decomposition into sulphur dioxide (SO2). SO2 is a colourless gas that poses health and safety risks. Since 2016, an anhydrous ammonia dosing system was successfully added to the existing Venturi particulate scrubber system to provide efficient removal of SO2 from the calciner off-gas. Within the pH controlled scrubber solution, SO2 exists in a pH dependent equilibrium with sulphite/bisulphite (SO32-/ HSO3-). The presence of a significant fraction of reduced sulphite and bisulphite in mill solutions presents a hazard in downstream circuits. Should these solutions drop in pH, either through natural oxidation or inadvertent mixing with low pH solutions, the solution equilibrium will shift from SO32-/HSO3- in favour of SO2, resulting in the evolution of SO2 gas from any liquid surfaces. In 2018, Hatch Ltd. (Hatch) and Orano implemented a design change in the calciner scrubber system. Blowdown from this system is now treated in an oxidation pre-step utilizing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and anhydrous ammonia (NH3) for pH control, in order to convert the residual sulphite/bisulphite present in solution to stable ammonium sulphate product. This paper will detail some of the challenges and actions undertaken to minimize SO2 risk, culminating in the recent introduction of a novel system designed to oxidize sulphite/bisulphite and prevent mobilization from the calciner scrubber solution into other mill areas where there is the potential for acidification and SO2 release.

"In recent years, there has been rapid growth in the use of natural stone building and construct ion products. The largest growing markets are for pre-fabricated natural stone panels for interior and exterior wall facing and flooring. This increased demand is attributed to advanced quarrying and processing technologies, renewed appreciation for the aesthetic appeal of natural stone, and to the superior durability of natural stone when compared to glass, steel, and concrete. Geologically, plutonic rocks, and to a lesser extent marble and limestone/dolostone, are used extensively for these applications. This paper details the economic structure of the dimension stone industry, describes the necessary characteristics of a stone quarry, and outlines the geological criteria which favour an economic quarry.INTRODUCTIONThe world building stone industry has remained relatively stable over the last 5 to 6 years. In contrast, the North American stone industry has experienced substantial growth during that period. The increased use of commercial granite is primarily responsible for this growth, where use as exterior wall veneer for commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings represents the largest and fastest growing market.This increased usage in the construction industry has been sparked by the application of new technologies in quarrying, processing and installation , ma king natural stone more competitive with man-made materials which are energy intensive to produce, and have risen dramatically in price. The development of safer, time-saving stone installation techniques has also appealed to the liability-conscience construction industry. Finally, there is a trend by designers and architects toward utilizing long-la sting weather-resistant building materials, and a renewed appreciation of the aesthetic appeal of natural stone. The other large user of granite is the monument industry of North America which, although it has decreased slightly in recent years, still consumes approximately 40% of all commercial granite produced. The local use of commercial marble has remained relatively stable, and North America still relies heavily on European sources and suppliers. There has been some concern over the use of marble for exterior applications in areas subject to acid rain, and in colder climates where the marble ma y be vulnerable to freeze thaw cycles. Despite these concerns, the greatest problem is not with the structural breakdown of marble but the inability of some marbles to retain their polished finishes in the se environments. As a result, there has been an increase in the use of granite at the expense of marble for exterior applications. Finally, commercial marble is used extensively for interior flooring, wall s, counter tops, furniture, sculptures, and stairway components"

"Recovery of gold from refractory ores and concentrates presently constitutes one of the most important, challenging, and exciting areas of R&D activity in the gold processing industry. New technologies are being tested for the treatment of refractory gold materials, some of which have been advanced to the level of commercial operation. In this paper, some recent technological developments in the hydrometallurgical processing of pyritic matrix-refractory gold ores are highlighted. Key operational steps of each of the alternate hydrometallurgical technologies are analyzed and potential advantages and drawbacks are identified. The processes which are reviewed are: hydro chemical oxidation, biochemical oxidation and pressure oxidation. INTRODUCTIONOver the years the term ""refractory"" has been applied in gold ore processing to denote situations in which straightforward cyanidation failed to yield high gold recoveries. A number of mineralogical and chemical factors may be responsible for this ""refractoriness"" problem. A systematic classification of the different options for their treatment has been discussed in a recent review paper. In this paper, the pretreatment of the submicroscopic gold encapsulated within the matrix of pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals is considered. This type of gold is the ultimate refractory material because complete breakdown by reaction of the host mineral structure is required.The method which has been traditionally applied for the treatment of pyritic-type refractory gold ores is an oxidation roast (single stage or double stage depending on the As content) of a flotation concentrate to produce a porous calcine, the latter being more amenable to cyanidation. Despite its established practice, oxidation roasting is not considered particularly attractive with today's standards for high product recovery and clean environment. Roasting is known to be very sensitive to heating parameters and feed composition and deviation from optimum conditions can result in reduction in permeability which is translated to incomplete gold liberation."

"This paper presents the results of a detailed feasibility study carried out to investigate whether a low-grade deep underground mine of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd., closed since 1975, could be made more productive and profitable by the introduction of new mining technology. For this purpose, recent advances in mine design and development concepts, larger and better designed machines, such as hydraulic drills, high-pressure down-the-hole machines, LHDs, new blasting concepts, more efficient and improved stoping methods, and ground control technology were considered. Technical and economic analyses incorporated the latest computer-based techniques. The mine was reopened in 1979 and the paper concludes with an assessment of actual progress and performance compared with that planned and forecast.IntroductionThe East Mine orebody, located between the Falconbridge Mine and Inco's Cryderman Mine in the Sudbury District of Ontario, has been in production since 1956. From 1956 to 1978, about 5.6 million tons of ore had been mined from this ore zone. The ore body is low grade and was developed as a cut-and-fill operation. Due to high operating costs, the mine has been shut down several times during economic downturns. The latest closure was in 1975 due to a lower demand for metal.In 1978, investigations were initiated to assess the economic and technical feasibility of mining this ore using new developments in mining technology. In this study, consideration was given to the application of bulk mining methods with a potential for higher productivity, trackless development utilizing efficient LHD machines and hydraulic drills, new blasting and fragmentation concepts, and new ground control technology. Advanced computer techniques, such as finite element, for mine design and rate of return with discounted cash flow analyses for the economic comparison- of various mining options were utilized for a rapid and comprehensive assessment during the feasibility stage."

Basically, the agreement covers three sectors: Sector A, geoscience; Sector B, mining and minerals technology research; and Sector C, development studies.Project selection involved input from industry, federal and provincial representatives. In the case of industrial mineral s, the selection was initiated at a meeting held at the offices of the Department of Mines and Energy, Winnipeg, Manitoba, in October 1985. One such project was the evaluation of the chromite ore deposits at Bird River, Manitoba."

"IntroductionSince the mid -1960s, automatic control of grinding circuits has become the rule, to avoid losses attributable to frequent circuit upsets associated with uncontrolled disturbances such as ore hardness variations. Higher capital costs of grinding equipment and corresponding operating costs-especially with respect to energy consumption-are major factors that continue to stimulate interest in grinding control.Grinding circuit control strategies depend upon the control objectives defined by the processing plant and are subject to constraints such as: maintain final per cent solids within some range, do not transport steel ball s out of the discharge trunnion, or do not overflow or empty the pump box and so on. Constraints depend on the nature of equipment employed within the grinding circuit and may actually determine the characteristics of the control scheme. Typical control objectives are:1. Maintain final particle size at set point by ,a. manipulation of fresh feed rate with circulating load maintained by manipulation of pump box water addition rate, orb. manipulation of pump box water addition rate with circulating load maintained by manipulation of fresh feed rate, where the methodology utilized to accomplish either (a) or (b) is dependent upon equipment/circuit constraints such as the availability of a variable speed pump.2. Maintain circuit throughput at a maximum by,a. manipulation of fresh feed rate subject to constraints on final particle size and variables such as power draw, circulating load and mill overload.3. Maintain mill load at set point by a. manipulation of fresh feed rate subject to constraints such as on power draw.4. Maintain mill power draw at set point bya . manipulation of fresh feed rate subject to mill load constraints. Often, a grinding control objective is dictated by the recovery vs fineness-of-grind characteristic that exists for downstream separation circuits. When recovery is relatively insensitive to size, maximum throughput in the grinding circuit is advantageous.The purpose of this paper is to review control strategies for primary ball mill grinding circuits, rod mill/ball mill grinding circuits and semi-autogenous grinding mill circuits. Primary sensors employed are highlighted and modern trends are documented briefly."

"Low-pressure sodium light sources have been available for several years, but have not received wide acceptance in underground mining. This is because they are difficult to operate using DC power, they are not an intrinsically safe light where explosive gases may be encountered and they give poor colour rendition.With the need for energy conservation, several Canadian hard-rock metal mines are now changing their lighting to low pressure sodium, as it has the highest efficacy of any light source in terms of lumens per watt. Studies have pointed out several other advantages as well. Glare can be controlled, they penetrate fog well, they are easily maintained, they have a long life and they give the highest visual acuity when compared to other types of lighting. As well, in an underground mine, contrast is much more important than colour for task identification. For close work, the colour problem is alleviated with the use of cap lamps.Case studies are presented from Canadian practice. These show how the lights are modified for underground use, calculations preceding light installation, and how and where the lights are installed in the underground environment. Mention is made of worker reaction to the lights and possible physiological effects.IntroductionThe importance of good underground lighting to the total environment of mining cannot be overemphasized. "Full-scale sections of three different types of Grade 483 line pipe have been evaluated extensively. The variations in chemical composition, optical microstructure, tensile properties, hardness and Charpy impact toughness with specimen orientation and location were determined. Significant variations in several properties, notably Charpy shelf energy, impact transition temperature, inclusion content and ferrite grain size, were observed for different locations in the pipes. The results indicate that current specifications call for test samples for the most conservative locations, except for impact tests. Minimum Charpy impact values generally occur at the II2-width location, which may be a more appropriate specified test location than the present I/4-width location. The anisotropy of impact toughness, and the importance of low sulphur content and inclusion shape control for adequate toughness in the transverse/rolling-direction orientation were demonstrated. The orientation of impact specimens is critical for spiral-weld pipe, and the current specification test is non-conservative in that it can give results which are two to three times higher than the minimum value for the steel.IntroductionThis report presents the results of an extensive metallurgical evaluation of three different Grade 483 line-pipe steels. "Canada has a special place in non-ferrous pyrometallurgy because it is the only country in the western world that is a significant producer of all the major non-ferrous metals; aluminum, copper, lead, magnesium, nickel and zinc. This large non-ferrous pyrometallurgy industry has developed because of Canada's abundant mineral wealth and energy resources. Table I summarizes the number of primary non-ferrous production facilities in Canada and their share of western world production.Production of non-ferrous metals is a mature, capital intensive business and its basic processes have been in use for many years. Nevertheless, these processes have continued to evolve in response to changing needs and external pressures; such as the energy crisis of the early seventies; historically low metal prices in the early eighties and the continuing pressure to reduce plant emissions and improve in-plant working conditions. Canada's major metallurgical companies: Alcan, Cominco, Falconbridge, Inco and Noranda have played a leading role in pioneering new process technology and continue to meet the difficult challenge of keeping their operations competitive in the global metals market. This paper will try to give an overview of the major developments in non-ferrous pyrometallurgy, largely from the Noranda and Canadian perspectives, highlighting the current status of process technology and possible future directions.AluminumCanada has the world's second largest aluminum smelting industry and its capacity has expanded rapidly in recent years with the completion of several large projects in Quebec. The location and capacity of the Canadian aluminum smelters are given in Table 2. All these plants use the Hall-Heroult process, that was invented over a century ago but over the last twenty years considerable improvements have been made to increase productivity, reduce power requirements and emissions.The developments in aluminum cell technology can be illustrated by the experience at Noranda Aluminum. In 1971, Noranda Aluminum started its first pot line using Kaiser's P69 prebake cell, which was considered, at that time, the best available technology. The P69 cell was designed primarily for high productivity, operating at 150 000 amps and high current density to produce just over tonne Al per cell-day. The P69 cell is a simple design, typically operating at about 88070 current efficiency and 15 800 kWh/tonne Al. When Noranda Aluminum decided to expand in 1980, the Alcoa 697 cell was selected as it then represented the most proven, stateof- the-art technology. This cell is similar to that installed at Alcan's new Grande Baie and Laterriere smelters and is designed to operate at 180000 amps and 93070 current efficiency, producing about 25070 more aluminum per pot-day than the P69 cell using about 15070 less power. The 697 cell has a much more sophisticated cell design, with very good balancing of the magnetic field giving a flat metal pad and allowing efficient operation at the higher amperage. Alumina is fed via point feeders that provide an almost continuous feed allowing close control of the alumina level in the bath and the use of low-ratio bath composition, giving much higher current efficiencies."
