Grinding mills are the heart of the mineral processing plant, and are production-critical machines which are required to achieve high availability. Liner wear life and a liner design that promotes ease of installation are important variables to achieve a high level of mill availability. Increased mill size results in more mill internal surface to protect, and more liner components to install and remove. This drives designers toward an increase in liner size to minimize the number of components to be installed by the liner handler. The liner attachment method can also have a large impact on mill availability as well as safety during installation. This paper outlines the experience from the development, installation and follow-up of liners installed in two 38' x 45' AG Mills at Boliden Aitik in Sweden. A new Poly-Met shell liner concept has been developed to minimize the number of liner components. The new Poly-Met shell liner components are made much larger than conventional Poly-Met or steel liners. This reduces the number of components to be installed/removed by the liner handler and helps to minimize installation time and consequently down- time. A new attachment system has also been developed to eliminate the need for the installation crew to be in the ?drop-zone? of the shell liners while installing the liner bolts. One interesting aspect of this project was the requirement to predict liner life for these new large format AG mills. The existing 22' diameter mills at Aitik provided a base-line reference for this purpose, and DEM studies were used in the project development stage to predict the wear life of shell liners for the new 38' diameter AG mills. The results from this study are included.

Without conscious effort and understanding, a number of factors peculiar to mineral exploration campaigns conspire against building sustainability in host communities. These include the episodic and transitory presence of an exploration team in the community and the inherent uncertainty of outcomes; most projects fail. Given these circumstances, there is a strong tendency to apply a simple formula of providing employment, pragmatic philanthropy and supporting infrastructure improvements (roads, schools and clinics) to demonstrate that mining provides benefits. Experience in rural native communities of Mesoamerica has shown that it is possible to create positive, sustainable outcomes quite rapidly within communities, which build capacity, improve quality of life and support a strong social license to operate. Success comes from an understanding of community structure and dynamics; engaging with all segments of the community; creating healthy, transparent and accountable relationships based on clearly defined roles and responsibilities; and supporting and strengthening the role of women in a culturally appropriate way. To this are added innovative and culturally appropriate ways of incorporating sustainability through genuine social investment in areas more typically addressed by exploration companies; health, education, and environmental management.

Introduction The Dome mine, in the Porcupine mining camp of northern Ontario, is one of the important gold mines of the country, having produced over 139 million dollars worth of gold from the commencement of production in '1910 to the end of 1944. The geology of the mine is complex and a number of types of ore are known, each occurring under particular conditions. The mine workings are very extensive and by far the greater part of them have been geologically mapped only in reconnaissance fashion. By 1940, when the writer joined the mine staff, the orebodies in the sedimentary trough and the 'nose' orebodies, the first types to be developed, were almost worked out and many workings were inaccessible, so the descriptions of these types are based largely on study of the plans and records. The same applies to a lesser extent to some other types. At various places in this paper, statements are made as to the mineralogical or chemical composition of the rocks. Most of these determinations are based on examinations made with a hand lens and cannot, therefore, be regarded as very reliable. General Geology As there are several types of ore in the mine, occurring under quite diverse conditions, a brief outline of the geology is given here, sufficient to provide a general picture into which the fuller descriptions given with each type of ore can be fitted.

"Major industrial restructuring, which started to manifest itself in the mature economies of the Western World and Japan in the 1970s, will accelerate in the 1980s and 1990s. Conventional heavy manufacturing industries will continue to lose ground to lighter processing/assembly operations and the new wave of high technology, information and service sectors. The decline in heavy manufacturing has severely impacted on the steel industries of Western Europe, the U.S.A . and Japan.World trade in metallurgical coal has shifted correspondingly, with declining demand in the mature developed countries being only partially offset by large increases in the steel intensity of the newly-industrialized countries (NICs) of the Far East, Latin America and, to a more limited extent, the Middle East and Africa. These trends will be accentuated in future years with direct implications for the distribution of metallurgical coal trade. This paper discusses, in quantitative terms, such changes in the 1980s and 1990s, and examines the implications for, and impacts on, Canadian metallurgical coal exporters.IntroductionThe twenty-year period from the early 1950 s to the early 1970s was characterized by inexorable growth in consumer demand and industrial expansion in most of the advanced countries of the western world. Long- term forecasting during this period typically used linear extrapolation techniques which , despite their simplicity, invariably ended up predicting future demand and production level s with uncanny accuracy. Times have changed!The last decade has been characterized by a n abysmal failure of our economies to respond to simple long-term, linear growth patterns. We appear to have entered a new world in transition, where we can observe a wave of dying or sunset industries reluctantly being submerged by a wave of emerging or sunrise industries.This paper is aimed a t examining the evidence for long-term industrial restructuring trend s. For want of a better word, these so -called, megatrends are then used to predict future demand level s and spatial distribution of steel development and , hence, metallurgical coal trade. It is tempting to correlate the decline in economic activity in the western world with the first Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries' (OPEC) crisis of 1973. This crisis was probably no more than the straw that broke the camel's back, as the megatrends and embryo s of major industrial restructuring were already evident. Today these megatrends are merely more apparent and transparent than they were ten years ago.While the concept of industrial restructuring is the new economic buzz word, the process was at work, to a lesser degree even throughout the period of strong economic growth of the post-Second World War boom. Many people still remain convinced that our present-day sluggish economy is just part o f the typical , though rather more prolonged, recessionary cycle. Yet, we have always been part of a dynamic economic system and industry throughout history has been the subject of a continuous process of evolution, restructuring and reconstitution . Now the time is ripe to examine the evidence for such restructuring in order to develop coherent policies of adjustment in this transition from one industrial regime to another."

Since the beginning of the 20th century, coal has been the world?s main source of primary energy. In the last few decades, consumption of coal has gradually decreased in some European countries and elsewhere due to the introduction of other energy sources. Regardless, industry continues to use solid fuels for energy production despite of their association with carbon dioxide emissions (about 7 billion Mg). For global development going forward, it is important to estimate what level of energy consumption can be expected as far into the future as the next few decades. To answer this question, specialized global institutions such as the International Energy Agency, the World Energy Council, the World Coal Institute, the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, as well as oil companies (BP, Shell), conduct periodic forecasts of world energy consumption. The development of such forecasts is very complex because their reliability is influenced by many factors that are difficult to estimate, such as economic development, population growth, climate change, and public awareness. We are all aware that the global demand for electricity will rise significantly in the coming years as a result of anticipated population growth, industrial development, rising living standards, and the general development of civilization. The world?s mineable resources in 2010 were as follows: coal 665.6 million Mg, brown coal 195.4 billion Mg, oil 163 million Mg, and natural gas 185.5 billion m3. The annual global primary energy demand in 2008 was more than 12 billion toe (12,267 Mtoe). In 2006, electricity production in the world amounted to 18,921 TW?h. The structure of the primary energy mix in TW?h (2006) was as follows: coal 41.0%; natural gas 20.1%; nuclear fuel 14.8%; hydro energy 16.0%; liquid fuels 5.8%; and other renewable energy sources 2.3%. The European Union (EU) is one of the largest coal consumers in the world. In 2010, the EU-27 produced 396.1 million Mg of brown coal, and 132.9 million Mg of hard coal; 188 million Mg of coal was imported from outside the EU. The largest hard coal producers in the EU-27 are Poland, Great Britain, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Spain; major brown coal producers are Germany, Greece, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. For many years, the Polish energy sector has been based on domestic fuel sources ? hard coal and brown coal. The characteristic feature of the Polish balance of primary energy resources is a very high share of coal ? much higher than the world average. Pursuing the decarbonisation of the Polish economy may jeopardize Poland?s energy security, leading to a significant increase in electricity prices, which would hamper the country?s economic development. Price volatility and supply uncertainty are now the dominant features of the international markets for oil and natural gas. The high share of these fuels in meeting energy needs is the reason for unrest in many countries, including those in the EU. Under these circumstances, coal may become the stabilizing element of EU energy security.

DURING the past year the Cadillac-Malanie area in northwestern Quebec has been catapulted to the front as one of Canada's most active gold mining districts. Late in 1934 the area was lolling along in the doldrums, with one producing mine and a handful of active prospects. 1935 passed with only slightly increased activity, but saw the start of production at Canadian Malartic mine. Lightning struck in April, 1936, when a new and phenomenally rich ore-body was found in O'Brien Gold mine, and by midsummer the camp was ablaze with activity. An important new discovery on the Pan-Canadian property, and pleasing underground developments at Sladen Malarric, East Malartic, and Lapa Cadillac, in addition to other new developments, lent fodder to the flame, and at present several dozen properties are being actively developed. For the past three seasons, the Geological Survey of Canada has been engaged in a fairly detailed study of the geology and mineral deposits across Cadillac, Malarric, and Fourniere townships. Ir is the purpose of this paper to present a brief preliminary statement of the structural and economic geology and to discuss some of the more important problems that have been found to exist. The reader is requested to remember that the paper is a preliminary one and that therefore the conclusions presented are open to revision. It is impossible to make full acknowledgment for help received, for the writers are indebted to practically every operator and prospector in the area for generous co-operation in the work, and to several private, provincial, and federal geologists for data and frank discussion of problems encountered. Over a score of student assistants from McGill, Queen's, and Toronto have given excellent service. Published reports by Wilson, Cooke, James, Mawdsley, L. V. Bell, and J. J. "During the previous decade, the role of spray-on liners within the mining industry was limited to providing a corrosion resistant coating to screen and bolts; however, increasingly, liners are being used as ground support products. Expanding use and testing of liners have demonstrated their ground support function, yet the definitive support mechanism is still under debate. The most promising theory is the retain/hold/reinforcement concept (Kaiser et al.,1992). This conceptual theory has been the basis for the recent underground trials at INCO where, specifically, shotcrete and MIROC Mineguard were tested in two trials to further define limitations and applications of each liner.In a cursory overview, shotcrete is becoming accepted as a support product, while Mineguard is only slowly gaining acceptance.This discrepancy is the result of the corresponding life-spans within the industry, whereby shotcrete has had wide-spread use for decades, yet Mineguard has only recently been introduced. Currently at INCO, shotcrete is primarily used: to provide support in poor ground conditions, to add stability when developing through backfill, and to provide damage control in seismically active mines. It is also used to protect production headings and secondary-blasting chambers from fly-rock damage during blasting. Despite an obvious support function of the liner, shotcrete has always been used in addition to bolts and screen. Comparatively, Mineguard is still in the testing stage, where the greatest potential is increased productivity for applications in multi-tasking development headings. In this scenario, Mineguard provides instant support to replace screen, and bolts temporarily. When the heading has advanced, the drill and support crews work in tandem, drilling off the next round and installing bolts for long-term radial support, respectively. Other potential applications of Mineguard are within production headings to replace screen in the back, and screen and bolts in walls. The potential for both liners to replace conventional support is clearly war-ranted, such that defining the support role was the primary goal of the two underground trials."

"Residues from the CESL Copper process were leached using the CESL Gold process. The kinetics of reaction were confirmed to be fast with over 50% of the gold consistently extracted within 2 minutes of leaching. Final gold extractions under the conditions tested here were between 80-90% obtained within 90 minutes. A model for the CESL Gold process was developed. This model is slightly different based on whether the copper concentrate leach residue was ground or unground prior to leaching: the gold leaching rate constant is approximately twice as fast for the ground samples. Unground residues had a P80 of 13 ?m whereas ground residues had a P80 of 10 ?m. The model predicts a 43% decrease in leaching time for ground residue versus unground residue to achieve the same extraction under otherwise identical conditions. The model was more accurate for the ground samples. INTRODUCTIONTeck's CESL Process (Jones, 1996) was developed to provide an economically attractive alternative to traditional copper smelting. It has since evolved to also deal with copper concentrates containing valuable impurities such as nickel and undesirable ones, such as arsenic, while reducing downstream costs. Effective recovery of gold and silver is essential to the economics of the CESL Process. The Brook Hunt 2007 copper concentrate assay data (Wood-Mackenzie, 2007) were examined to determine the ratio of gold plus silver value relative to the contained copper. As indicated in Figure 1 below, nearly two-thirds of concentrates have 10% or more of their total value tied up in their precious metals content.CESL has extensively examined the recovery of gold and silver at bench, pilot and demonstration scale, which has culminated in the present CESL Gold Process (Barr et al., 2007). The process targets the precious metal contained in the leach residues produced in the copper portion of the flowsheet. This residue has two primary components which influence downstream processing. The major iron-rich fraction (-75 wt%) of the residue is a mixture of various forms of iron oxide precipitates including hematite and jarosite (Sahu and Asselin, 2011). The iron fraction ranges from amorphous to crystalline in nature depending on the compound precipitated, upstream operating conditions and feed material composition. The lesser, but by no means less important, fraction is a mixture of elemental sulphur and unreacted sulphides (principally pyrite).Elemental sulphur formed during the oxidative leach of the copper concentrate reacts with cyanide to form thiocyanate (SCN-) making a traditional cyanide leach approach too costly. Since the SCN formation reaction strongly depends on contact time with the CESL residues (Po, 2007) short contact times were preferred. This factor guided the development work towards the eventual room temperature, pressure cyanidation process which results in near complete gold dissolution in 90 minutes. A recent CESL gold demonstration campaign treating 1.5 t/d of residue from the copper oxidation step achieved an average gold extraction of 91% (96% maximum)."

"The Red-Chris porphyry Cu-Au deposit is located between Ealue and Kluea lakes, southeast of the village of Iskut on the Stewart Cassiar highway in northwestern British Columbia. It was explored by Texasgulf Inc., in a joint venture with Great Plains Development Company of Canada, Ltd. and Silver Standard Mines Ltd., during the period 1973 to 1980. Exploration resumed in 1994, following acquisition of the interests originally held by Texasgulf and Great Plains Development by American Bullion Minerals Ltd.Prospectors were first drawn to the area by prominent limonitic stain zones exposed in creek gullies in the western part of the property. These zones are developed on the alteration halo at the western periphery of the deposit. The potential ore zones do not crop out and were first exposed in a bulldozer trench excavated in 1971. Subsequent exploration was by percussion and diamond drilling, guided to some extent by induced polarization surveys. In 1976, estimated resources contained within two crudely designed open pits were 41 million tonnes with an average grade of 0.56% Cu and 0.34 g/t Au, with a cutoff grade of0.25% Cu. New resource estimates based on a major drilling program completed by American Bullion in 1994 were released as this paper goes to press. These estimates were calculated using various copper cutoff grades; at the 0.4% Cu cutoff, the ""in-situ geological reserve"" is given as 100 million tonnes grading 0.58% Cu and 0.46 g! t Au (American Bullion Minerals Ltd., 1995).The deposit consists mainly of pyrite, chalcopyrite and increasing bornite at depth, in zones of quartz-vein stockwork hosted by an elongate body of altered monzonite porphyry of latest Triassic or earliest Jurassic age. The stock intruded volcanic and sedimentary rocks of probable Stuhini Group affinity and is in faulted contact with sedimentary rocks of the Jurassic Bowser Lake Group. Gypsum stockworks are developed in the higher levels of the subvolcanic porphyry system. Late-stage quartz-carbonate veins carry small amounts of galena and sphalerite. Complex faulting within the deposit makes drill-hole correlations difficult. Alteration assemblages include an early potassic phase, almost completely destroyed by later phyllic alteration, and surrounded by a propylitic assemblage dominated by ankeritic carbonates in altered sedimentary rocks.The deposit has characteristics of bath the alkalic and calc-alkalic classes of porphyry copper deposits. The development of quartzvein stockwork suggests a calc-alkalic affinity, but the hostrocks contain little or no free quartz, molybdenum is present in trace amounts only and gold values are significant. Copper grades vary between wide extremes with unusually high grades in some sections of the deposit. The weight of evidence available in the 1970s led us to place the Red-Chris deposit firmly in the alkalic family. The quartz-sericite alteration assemblage was attributed to breakdown of potassium feldspar in a near-surface alteration environment in which seawater may have had a significant role. These interpretalions are retained here, but preliminary conclusions from the most recent work suggest that they may require some modification."

Superconductivity is one of the most remarkable scientific phenomena ever investigated. It is the phenomenon whereby some materials exhibit zero resistance to the passage of an electric current when cooled to low temperatures, and requires a quantum mechanical explanation. Four Nobel prizes in physics have been awarded specifically on the subject of superconductivity, with many more enabled by superconducting technology. For example, particle beams are generated in accelerators and manipulated in ?particle beam lines? in the ?Big Physics? projects around the world eg. at CERN, Geneva, leading to major discoveries in fundamental particle physics. Similarly, at the JET Propulsion laboratory near Oxford, U.K, controlled nuclear fusion has been demonstrated, and magnetic containment of plasmas is key. In the chemical and biological sciences high field NMR spectroscopy has become indispensable for examining organic matter, revealing the mysteries of the workings of cells, genetics, and in the development of new polymers and pharmaceuticals. With all these very advanced uses for superconducting magnets, it is easy to forget that superconductivity is big business, not just a scientific curiosity. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) superconducting magnets, the key component of high resolution body scanners, use approximately half of the world?s superconducting wire ? the other half being mostly used in accelerator magnets. The MRI market is about 3 billion dollars per annum, and one MRI magnet uses 200km of wire. New applications for superconducting magnets are now appearing including ?Catheter steering?, enabling much shorter timescales for life-saving brain tumour removals and ?Functional MRI?, a whole new area in patient diagnostics. Whilst the use of low temperature superconductors (LTS) is now well established commercially in superconducting magnets and niche electronic applications, the application of LTS in electric power distribution and transport has been very limited to date. It is now more than fifteen years since the so-called High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) materials were discovered: these can be operated at liquid nitrogen temperatures rather than liquid helium temperatures. However, materials processing and scale-up issues have prevented their widespread use, and in particular the required price/performance criteria are only beginning to be reached except in certain niche markets. BSCCO (Bismuth Strontium Calcium Copper Oxide) tapes up to one km long are now readily available, and have been demonstrated in high current cables for power distribution networks, but the general consensus is that 1) it is difficult to reduce the price much further because of the silver matrix required and 2) in applications where coils are required eg. motors, generators, transformers etc the properties of BSCCO are rather poor because of the critical current dependence on magnetic field. Magnetic fields are always associated with coils and windings, and such fields are of course fundamental to the operation of all electrical machines. YBCO (Yttrium Barium Copper Oxide) however, has good characteristics in field and for the last few years there has been intensive research and development costing several tens of millions of dollars worldwide into the scale-up of production of so-called ?coated conductor?. This ?second generation? tape can be produced by any of many different film deposition techniques, with more or less success for short lengths, but as yet it is unavailable in lengths more than a few tens of metres.

"This is an extended abstract for a keynote lecture delivered by the author during the 2015 ISRM congress in Montreal on the application of the numerical discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) method in rock mechanics practice. Due to the large scope of the topic this lecture will focus on studies performed by the rock mechanics group at Ben-Gurion University, alone or in collaboration which other research groups, and is not intended to provide a comprehensive review of everything that has been done on the subject worldwide during the past two decades. A forthcoming textbook (Hatzor et al., in preparation) will attempt to provide such comprehensive coverage.DDA has been developed by Dr. Gen-hua Shi while he was doing his PhD studies under the supervision of Professor R. E. Goodman at U. C. Berkeley (Shi, 1988). Dr. Shi has invented a new numerical discrete element method which provides a solution for dynamic deformation of block systems, hence its applicability to rock mechanics practice. The method is similar in essence to the finite element method in its implicit formulation of the time integration scheme and where in every time step the minimum potential energy of the entire system is sought, but here every element is a finite block with six degrees of freedom. The blocks are assumed to be stiff (simply deformable) so that most of the energy is consumed by slip along pre-existing discontinuities, the frictional resistance of which is assumed to obey the Coulomb-Mohr failure criterion for rock joints. The greatest advantage of DDA over alternative numerical discrete element methods is its robust area (volume) integration which ensures great accuracy even when the blocks are of irregular shapes, including non-convex blocks which may contain holes. The greatest disadvantage is the necessity to solve in every time step very large matrices of unknowns, imposing great CPU demand when the block system involves a large number of blocks. Another disadvantage is the sensitivity of the solution to the choice of the penalty parameter which is implemented in DDA in the form of stiff springs that are attached to contacts once detected automatically.The inherently dynamic formulation of the DDA method lends itself to solution of dynamic problems in rock mechanics. Dynamic analysis with DDA can be performed in different ways corresponding to different rock mechanics problems and loading conditions. Three main classes of loading conditions which are relevant to rock mechanics applications are discussed here: 1) dynamic loading of a single bock which rests on a stationary foundation, 2) response of a block to dynamic loading of the foundations, 3) wave propagation through a block system.The most common approach is to introduce the dynamic force to a specific block in an otherwise fixed block system and check the resulting deformation, typically the time dependent displacement or rotation of the loaded block. This approach is particularly useful for dynamic rock slope stability studies when a stability of a specific rock block against earthquake vibrations is in question. The first 2D-DDA benchmark test of this approach was performed by Hatzor and Feintuch (2001) who introduced harmonic acceleration functions into a block which rests on an inclined plane. The analytical solution proposed for this problem by Hatzor and Feintuch (2001) was later generalized by Kamai and Hatzor (2008). The first 3D-DDA benchmarking for this approach was presented by Bakun-Mazor et al. (2012) who studied single and double face sliding of blocks which rest on stationary foundations and subjected to harmonic input acceleration functions."

"Hat Creek coal was treated by the liquid solvent extraction process in a continuous plant at the U.K. National Coal Board Coal Research Establishment.Extraction levels of over 80 per cent dry-mineral-matter-free (dmmf) coal were achieved.Total light oil yield was around 47 per cent of the dmmf coal. The light oil was shown to be a good feedstock for secondary refining into gasoline, jet fuel and diesel fuel.In spite of the high mineral matter content of the coal the solid residue was successfully removed from the coal extract by filtration.IntroductionBritish Columbia Hydro (BCH) and the National Coal Board of Great Britain (NCB) undertook a joint project to test the Hat Creek coal from British Columbia in the NCB's coal liquefaction process designed to produce transport fuels and feedstocks for the chemical industry by the liquid solvent extraction of coal(1), In this process most of the coal is dissolved in an aromatic solvent and the residual solids consisting of mineral matter and undissolved coal are removed by filtration. The resultant coal extract solution is fed to a hydrocracker for conversion to light liquid products and a fraction suitable for recycling as solvent. The light liquid products can be converted to gasoline and diesel fuel in a secondary refining stage.The dissolution of the coal is effected by heat-treating a slurry at a temperature in the region of 400°C which causes some bonds in the coal to rupture with the formation of radicals(2,3). These radicals are stabilized by hydrogen transfer from the hydroaromatic groups in the solvent, resulting in a reduction in the molecular weight of the coal. In the absence of donor groups the radicals combine to form an insoluble high molecular weight product(4). From studies of the kinetics of these reactions it has been shown that the formation and stabilization of the radicals is rapid at temperatures around 400°C(2,3). The dissolution of the depolymerizing coal is, however, relatively slow and the need to ensure complete dissolution in order to achieve a high extraction restricts the selection of digestion time(5). Further, it is important that digests do not contain depolymerizing coal as it may re-form under the applied stress in the filter cake inhibiting flow through the bed and resulting in low filtration rates(6).Thus, in practice relatively long digestion times are generally required in order to ensure complete dissolution of the depolymerizing coal, while it is also important to avoid depletion of the hydrogen donor groups in the solvent which would lower the rate of hydrogen donation to the coal and thus reduce the extraction yield and adversely affect the filtration(7). Clearly it is desirable to optimize the digestion time and temperature with regard to the extraction yield and filtration properties.The precise control of the distribution of products from the hydro-cracker is important for the composition of the recycle process solvent. The principal functions of the solvent are to provide a source of donatable hydrogen and a vehicle for the dissolution of the depolymerizing coal. Hydrogen transfer from the solvent, achieved by the conversion of hydroaromatic to aromatic groups, stabilizes the radicals formed by thermal cleavage of some of the bonds in the coal resulting in a progressive reduction in the size of the coal molecules(8,9) and dissolution in the solvent. The combination of radicals would result in the formation of insoluble material and a reduced extraction yield of the coal(4). Thus to achieve a high extraction yield the solvent should contain sufficient hydrogen donor groups to prevent extensive radical combination. This paper examines the latest advances in mine hoist motor and drives systems. The technology employed for large hoists has migrated from the traditional DC technology to AC motors with cyclo convertor drives, and more recently, advances in pulse width modulation (PWM) drives have resulted in these being applied to large hoist drives. When combined with PWM drive technology, the induction motor presents the ideal solution for hoist applications This paper examines the factors in choosing a suitable PWM drive and motor for a hoist installation. Factors under consideration include: ? hoist duty cycle, ? drive rating restrictions, ? choice of power semiconductor device,, ? low speed operation, ? maintenance ? reliability The cage induction motor and synchronous motor are compared and it is shown that the induction motor is the motor of choice for large hoists.

An optimized long-term mine planning determines the best order of material extraction, so that the Net Present Value (NPV) becomes maximum. In the case of oil sands surface mining, one of the key constraints in NPV maximization is the volume of tailings slurry that will be generated downstream. Specifications of tailings slurry are also important from environmental perspective. Moreover, most of the material that will be used for the reclamation of tailings ponds in later periods is generated in extraction and processing of oil sands. In this paper, an integrated optimization framework is proposed to maximize the NPV of the produced oil sands, with respect to tailings capacity constraints and reclamation material requirements. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed to find the optimal solution for long-term mine planning problem. The proposed model is coded in Matlab and has been run using CPLEX for verification. The results for real-case oil sands dataset show that the optimal production schedule meets material requirements for reclamation, tailings volume is within tailings capacity range in all periods and the production schedule follows the predetermined horizontal direction.

"Effects of Fe, Cu and Mg minor alloying elements on creep properties of 8xxx aluminum conductor alloys were investigated by conducting compressive creep tests at 100 ºC under a constant load of 69 MPa. The microstructural evolution was studied using an optical microscope and electron backscatter diffraction technique. The creep properties were characterized by the primary creep strain in the first stage and the minimum creep rate in the second stage of creep deformation. Results showed that additions of all three minor alloying elements (Fe, Cu and Mg) demonstrated a beneficial effect on the creep resistance but individual alloying elements exhibited different impacts on creep properties. The additions of Fe and Mg showed a strong impact on both the primary creep strain and minimum creep rate, while the Cu addition displayed a favorable effect on the primary creep strain but no impact on the minimum creep rate. Microstructure observation revealed that with increasing Fe contents, the volume fraction of fine intermetallic dispersoids gradually increased while the subgrain size and misorientation angle became smaller, providing strong barriers to the dislocation and grain boundary movements. The addition of Cu moderately reduced the subgrain size and misorientation angle and in combination of solid solution strengthening it promoted the retardation of the creep deformation during the primary stage.INTRODUCTIONThe 8xxx aluminum conductor alloys offer significant advantages such as low density, high conductivity to weight ratio and low price over copper conductors and become an attractive candidate in electrical engineering and building wiring (McQueen, Chia, & Starke, 1986; Birol, 2009; Engler, Laptyeva, & Wang, 2013). The mass resistivity of aluminum conductors is one-half of copper conductors. Thus, only one-half the weight of aluminum is required for equivalent capacities. Therefore, this unique property coupled with a relatively low price of aluminum offers significant economic advantage to develop aluminum conductor alloys for electrical applications in the electrical wire industry."

Characterization of a virgin and in-service Inconel 718 alloy was undertaken to study the changes caused by the service conditions on the grain size, ?? phase, MN-type nitrides and MC-type carbides. The size, distribution and volume fraction of these phases and grain size were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) analyses. A considerable difference in the grain size, as well as distribution and volume fraction of the precipitates was observed in the in-service material as compared to the virgin Inconel 718. As a result of these microstructural changes, a notable dissimilarity in hardness between the materials investigated was observed. The results presented in this study are important for proper development of repair parameters and heat treatment of in-service Inconel 718 material.

"This paper presents basic chemistry and operating conditions for the hydrolysis of ferric chloride into solid hematite and gaseous hydrogen chloride, and shows how this unit operation can be applied in chloride hydrometallurgy to regenerate strong hydrochloric acid and reject iron without also rejecting valuable metals such as nickel, copper and cobalt. Two examples are used to illustrate the hydrolysis technology and compare it to existing technology. The first is the regeneration of spent steel pickling acid, comparing hydrolysis to conventional pyrohydrolysis. The second example is the processing of a hypothetical low grade nickel laterite, comparing the novel chloride hydrolysis route to conventional sulphate HPAL technology.INTRODUCTION Whilst, in many respects, the control and removal of dissolved iron from chloride leach solutions can resemble the manner in which it is done in sulphate systems, chloride chemistry additionally offers the ability to achieve the same objectives in different ways (Harris, 2014). Conventionally, iron is oxidised to its ferric state (if necessary) and then precipitated with a base, usually magnesia where the feed is a laterite and lime where it is a sulphide, since calcium will precipitate sulphate formed during leaching. One method for controlling iron is to form FeOOH, either ß-FeOOH (akaganéite), a-FeOOH (goethite), or a mixture thereof (Fillipou and Choi, 2002). However, if akaganéite is formed, the precipitate will contain a significant chloride component (as high as 7% Cl), leading to chloride losses and difficulty in satisfactorily disposing of the residue. Washing chloride from akaganéite is almost impossible due to the propensity of the solids to undergo peptization. The conventional approach requires the addition of a base, but it is based to some extent on controlled supersaturation precipitation (Demopoulos, 2009), which produces a more uniform and crystalline material and is far more attractive than, for example, the turboaeration process proposed by Great Central Mines in their chloride copper process (Raudsepp & Beattie, 1986)."

An electrowinning pilot plant has been constructed at Falconbridge Nikkelverk A/S, Kristiansand, Norway. The equipment consists of a mixing tank where the electrolyte composition and temperature are controlled, an electrowinning tank equipped with five cathodes and six anodes of commercial size and design and a dechlorination facility. Electrowinning experiments were carried out in this pilot plant using acid cobalt chloride solution from the cobalt tankhouse. Key parameters were varied to obtain an improved understanding of the cobalt electrowinning process, focusing on the detrimental deposition of cobalt oxide on dimensionally stable anodes. The extent of anode scaling was found to be dependent on the electrowinning conditions. Low pH, temperature and cobalt concentration resulted in less scale being formed, however at the expense of cobalt current efficiency and cell voltage, adversely affecting electrowinning production capacity and energy consumption. When operating at high acidity, pH in the anolyte was higher than in the catholyte, which is believed to be due to H+ ions taking part in the current transport across the diaphragm, migrating out of the bags surrounding each anode.

This survey continues the long tradition of providing a snapshot of operating data from industrial electrorefineries. It is a supplement to previous surveys that were performed in 1987, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016. Analyses of current data and historical trends are presented. Examples of innovations to reduce costs, improve productivity, and improve quality are provided. In general, refineries continue to increase productivity while treating anodes with more impurities. INTRODUCTION This manuscript analyzes global survey data provided by operating copper electrorefineries. This paper continues a series of surveys of copper refining tankhouses that started in 1987 (Schloen, 1987, 1991; Schloen & Davemport, 1995; Davenport et al., 1999; Robinson et al., 2003; Moats et al., 2007, 2013, 2016). In this installment, data collected from 2015 and 2018 will be presented and analyzed. The 2015 survey data were presented at Copper 2016 in Kobe, Japan. This survey will continue the analysis of previous data to illustrate long term trends in copper electrorefining, which were originally presented at the Davenport Symposium in October, 2014 (Moats, Robinson, & Wang, 2014). Refineries who supplied surveys are listed in Table 1. Cathode production data from 2015 and 2017/18 (from surveys presented in 2016 and 2019) are provided to indicate which plants provided surveys and when. This manuscript presents operating data for ~6.5 million tonnes of copper production, which represents 30–35% of the world’s copper electrorefining production.
