"Oil sands tailings impoundments rank among the largest (spatially) in the world, covering a total of approximately 220 km2 of northern Alberta, Canada. A preliminary geomorphic design for an oil sands tailings storage facility (TSF) landform was completed with the goal of eventual closure and delicensing in mind. This paper outlines methods identified during the design process that streamline closure when implemented early in the mine planning and TSF design stages. With most oil sands TSFs currently in active operation (and some still in the planning stages), geotechnical engineers and mine planners have the opportunity to make operational and design decisions, such as those outlined herein, that are likely to improve the geotechnical and environmental performance of the landform post closure. ¦ KEYWORDS Alberta, Athabasca oil sands (AOS), Landform design, Reclamation, Sand dam, Tailings storage facility (TSF) RÉSUMÉ Les bassins d’accumulation des résidus issus des sables bitumineux font partie des plus grands (en termes d’espace) au monde, et couvrent au total environ 220 km2 dans le nord de l’Alberta, au Canada. Oil sands located within 100 m of the original surface account for 4,800 km2 of the total area and are considered to be economically mineable (Figure 1; ERCB, 2009). Bitumen, the thick, tar-like substance contained in the AOS, is extracted through open-pit mining and in-situ methods. During mining, the overburden is first removed as waste and the sandy, bitumi¬nous ore (“oil sand”) is transported to processing facilities via conveyor belts and 400 t trucks. Warm and hot water, as well as process aides such as caustic soda, are mixed with the oil sand, creating a slurry from which bitumen is mobilized and extracted. The resulting slurry waste product is called “tailings” and contains mineral solids, process water, and small proportions of unrecovered bitumen (Masliyah, Zhou, Xu, Czarnecki, & Hamza, 2004; Sobkowicz & Morgenstern, 2009)."

Introduction Several basins of the Nanaimo series, a group of coal-bearing sedimentary rocks of Upper Cretaceous age, underlie parts of Vancouver island and the adjacent gulf islands. One, the Nanaimo basin, occurs on the southern half of the west shore of the gulf of Georgia. About fifty square miles at the north end of this basin are known to be underlain by productive coal seams, this area being known as the Nanaimo coal field. Coal has been mined from two horizons- that of the Wellington seam, fairly low in the series, and that of the Newcastle and Douglas seams, about the middle of the series. Coal has been mined here since the fall of 1852. About fifty million tons have been produced, almost half the total production of British Columbia. About seventy-two years ago, James Richardson of the Geological Survey made a reconnaissance of the coal measures on Vancouver island, and thirty-five years ago C. H. Clapp mapped and reported on most of the Nanaimo coal field. Twenty-four years ago, J. D. MacKenzie extended the work to those areas not mapped by Clapp. MacKenzie died before the results of his work could be published, but did issue a revised estimate of the Goal Resources of Southern Vancouver Island. Work by the present writer is a further contribution by the Geological Survey to knowledge of the island coal measures. Having spent more time in the field, and having had more data at his disposal than were available to his predecessors, the writer has been able to throw additional light on the Nanaimo, and other, coal fields on Vancouver island. THE opinion, based upon geological knowledge, that certain areas within the Province of Nova Scotia might yield commercial quantities of petroleum, is not new. It dates back to at least 1864, when the Pioneer Oil and Salt Company drilled some shallow holes in search of oil near lake Ainslie, Cape Breton. As a matter of fact, several companies were engaged in oil exploratory work near lake Ainslie at about that time; included among them were the Inverness Oil and Mining Company, the Victoria Oil Company, the American Oil Company, and the Cape Breton Oil and Mining Company. Oil exploration by these and other companies was conducted sporadically on Cape Breton island until 1914. In several instances, the depth of the test holes exceeded 1,000 feet; the deepest was carried to 3,260 feet. The Lake Ainslie area was selected because oil seepages were present along certain sections of the lake shore, but the tests that were drilled to tap the oil-bearing zone failed to yield anything of commercial value. Currently, there are three areas in Nova Scotia wherein active exploratory work is being conducted, namely, at Pugsley Siding close to Amherst; at Kennetcook, Hants county; and near Mabou, Inverness county. The Pugsley Siding test is being drilled by the Sun Oil Company, of Philadelphia; the work at Kennetcook is under the direction of the Nova Scotia Oil and Gas Company; two relatively deep holes were drilled by the Lion Oil Refining Company in 1944 near Mabou, and, as a result of the additional geological information derived therefrom, another test probably will be drilled by this Company in the same area. Aside from these activities in the search for petroleum, the oil possibilities of several other sections of the Province are being studied by means of surface geological mapping.

"There is renewed interest in the improvement of existing copper smelting processes and the development of new technologies. It has become clear that further accurate information on slag properties, in particular, on phase equilibria are required in order to optimize these processes. It is in this context that improved experimental research methodologies have been developed specifically to provide information on phase equilibria at the oxygen partial pressures encountered in copper smelting practice. The methodology involves synthetic slag equilibration at controlled gas atmospheres, quenching and measurement of compositions of phases with an electron probe X-ray microanalyser (EPMA) with wavelength dispersive detectors (WDD). Application of modem analytical tools and careful design of experiments greatly improve accuracy of determination of phase equilibria in complex, multi-phase slag systems. New experimental data on phase equilibria for the copper smelting and converting silicate slags at controlled oxygen partial pressures in the temperature range between 1200°C and 1350°C in the ""Fe0""-Ca0-SiO2 system and in the ""Cu20""-""Fe0""-Ca0-Si02 system in equilibrium with metallic copper are reported, and differences between various data sources are analyzed."

"OLI Analyzer is a software package that uses the powerful Mixed Solvent Electrolyte (MSE) model to simulate the behavior of multicomponent electrolyte solutions from infinite dilution to the limit of fused salt, and from temperatures below the freezing point up to near critical temperature of the mixture. The software also allows the creation of thermodynamic parameters for new chemical systems unavailable yet in public-domain or commercial software databanks. This communication reviews the basics of the model and provides some examples of modeling hydrometallurgical applications with emphasis on high temperature applications, including calcium sulfate scale formation in autoclaves, high temperature pH inference and iron control. INTRODUCTIONModeling of electrolyte systems has been of particular interest to various industrial processes, such as separation processes (e.g., solution crystallization, extractive distillation, seawater desalination or bio-separations), environmental applications (e.g., gas treatment, wastewater treatment or chemical waste disposal) and hydrometallurgy (e.g., pH control and neutralization, iron control, scaling and fouling of equipment). Using a chemical model, time-effective predictions of various properties of electrolytes can be obtained, which is beneficial not only during process monitoring, but also during process optimization and process scale up. As a result, pilot scale studies can sometimes be eliminated where budgetary constraints exist. Development of such a powerful model requires the use of a speciation-based model, in which solution chemistry is explicitly addressed (as compared with some models that treat electrolytes either as undissociated or fully dissociated systems), despite being computationally challenging. In addition, as a feature of electrolyte systems, speciation equilibria inherently influence the phase equilibria due to complex formation, ion pairing, and acid-base reactions. Therefore, how the electrolyte solutions behave at various conditions may differ significantly due to the non-ideality, which must be carefully addressed to obtain a model that is applicable to a wide range of conditions such as concentration, temperature, pressure and solvent system."

ABSTRACT: Metals market improvements in 2005 drove the desire to increase nickel throughput and the production of nickel oxide sinter at the Vale Ltd. Copper Cliff smelter. Significant difficulties were encountered due to the unreliable quality of Bessemer matte being produced. Concentrate feed changes and the loss of technical and operational expertise during the previous market downturn contributed to the challenge of making the required improvements. Significant progress has been made in the converter aisle by focusing on employee engagement and standardizing best operating practices for a new generation of skimmers. This paper documents these initiatives and seeks to balance the art and science of converting.

Northern Saskatchewan comprises an area of about 350 000 km2 and boasts some of the world's largest known high-grade uranium deposits. The successful mining of these deposits, however, can not be accomplished without overcoming technical challenges. Not only is the high grade of the uranium ore challenging, but mining methods need to be developed to deal with groundwater at very high pressures, and ground conditions that vary substantially from excellent to wholly unconsolidated clays and sand. This paper discusses the various mechanisms of inflows at the three of the Cameco Corporation Mines in Northern Saskatchewan. The risk of inflows is quantified in terms of unique challenges from hydrogeologic conditions, rockmass integrity, and uncertainty in geologic conditions. Mitigation strategies in case of an inflow are also briefly described. The paper concludes by addressing the impact of institutional rules (corporate standards) on minimizing, monitoring, and controlling the probability and/or impact of unexpected inflows.

GOLGOHAR Mining & Industrial Co., with annual production of 16 million tons, is one of the largest pelletizing and iron ore supplier in Iran that recently this year, because of using mineral processing techniques and extraction of ore body positioning between the metamorphic rocks, about 150 million tons of dry tailings has been created as a result of concentrate production. On the other hand, many environmental issues such as groundwater pollution have been developed by sulfide and silicate gangue minerals, which containing heavy metals such as mercury and arsenic. In this study, a new product with high added value has been introduced for the company by identification and extraction of industrial minerals in dry tailings. Also, by removing large masses of dry tailings, environmental pollution sources were gradually eliminated. This method can be used as a modern waste management approach in the world.

It is the general belief that the coal deposits on Vancouver Island are extremely large, and easily available. Indeed, they are frequently described by prominent public men and by writers in the press as "illimitable" and "inexhaustible." It is well that the facts that have been established as a result of seventy years of surface prospecting, underground operations and extensive diamond-drilling in this coalfield should be disclosed. HISTORY The presence of coal on the coast of British Columbia was first made known by Dr. W. F. Tolmie in 183 5. This coal was brought to him by Indians from the north-east coast of Vancouver Island, probably from Suquash. In 1850 the existence of coal at Nanaimo was announced by Mr. ]. W. MacKay. Development was started in 1852, and coal was shipped before the close of 185 3. The first operations were carried on by the Hudson's Bay Company, who operated the mines until 1861, when they sold them to the Vancouver Coal Mining and Land Company. Practically all of the operations in the immediate vicinity of Nanaimo have been carried on by this Company and its successors. In 1869, Mr. Robert Dunsmuir discovered coal about five miles north-west of Nanaimo, at Wellington. The Welling-ton Colliery Company was organized, and began to produce coal from the Wellington mines in 1871, the coal being shipped from Departure bay. This colliery was a large producer for several years, but was finally closed in 1900.

The goal of this presentation is to firstly, review mine effluent permits in a number of regulatory jurisdictions; and secondly, to develop a strategy for incorporating the regulatory requirements into the environmental assessment (EA) process for new mine proposals. The focus was on the province of British Columbia (BC) and their recent initiative on the One Project, One Process initiative. This task was approached by reviewing mine effluent permits for various regulatory jurisdictions and comparing them to BC mine effluent permits. This comparison revealed a variety of approaches for designing mine effluent permits, but there is a common scientific approach, which supports the conclusion that the permitting of mine site discharges can be designed based on a scientific approach. This approach is expected to: (a) achieve sound environmental protection, (b) demonstrate the application of Best Achievable Technology, (c) incorporate sound sustainability approaches, (d) incorporate regulatory objectives, and (e) create efficiencies for the regulator and mining industry. There is an essential precursor to developing a sciencebased effluent permit for which the proponent must provide: (1) the necessary technical assessment information to demonstrate the mine effluent permit application will result in an environmentally protective effluent discharge, to the satisfaction of the permitting agency; (2) the necessary level of detail for essential mitigation pollution control works to demonstrate how they will be operated to achieve the necessary treatment goals; (3) the necessary level of detail for non-treatment mitigation (passive treatment, or passive pollution control); and (4) the necessary level of detail to demonstrate how pollutants will be prevented from being mobilized (or being generated) from ore and waste materials, or, if the pollutant originates from an added milling reagent, how the reagent will be reduced. While (active) mitigation pollution control equipment is more definable in an effluent permit, non-treatment mitigation is more nebulous in terms of defining in a mine effluent permit; it is therefore recommended that appropriate management plans be developed for essential mitigation pollution control and non-treatment mitigation (passive treatment) and submitted with the proponent?s EA/effluent permit application packages. Major deficits in adequate active and passive pollution control will inevitably lead to regulatory impediments to developing a permit and allowing a mine to be developed, although EA processes strive to preclude major permit information gaps; the onus is on the proponent to provide complete information in this area. Hence the importance of EA processes ensuring that the major technical information requirements for effluent permit development are included in the EA phase. Recently, this aspect of the mine EA process has taken on a new role under the political efforts of One Project, One Review Process (Canadian) and One Project, One Process (in BC). These initiatives translate, in part, to ?synchronous permitting? (in BC): effluent permitting, for example, may be initiated shortly after the proponent submits the EA application to Ministry of Environment.

Maintenance of quality electrowon copper requires an electrolyte which has suitable chemical and physical characteristics. The proper design and operation of the solvent extraction plant is essential to the quality of the electrolyte sent to electrowinning. An aspect that is not well appreciated is that the return electrolyte can have negative effects on the operation of the solvent extraction plant. Poor SX plant operation creates below optimum electrolyte conditions. High Eh in the return spent electrolyte can degrade the SX reagent with large decreases in copper transfer capacity and increases in internal entrainment. The synergistic interaction of the SX and EW plants needs a single-source design approach to address the interactions. The design elements in the SX and EW plants required to manage the electrolyte conditions are discussed.

THE Geological Survey was created in 1842 to aid the development of Canada's mineral resources. Although the institution has been in existence for nearly 100 years and has accomplished an immense amount of work, the need for its services remains as great as ever and, indeed, it is difficult to imagine a time when the country will no longer require a Geological Survey. This is so because of the tremendous effort required to make an adequate geological examination of so large an area as is embraced by Canada and partly because what today may seem an adequate geological examination proves, later on, to be inadequate. The ultimate objective of the Geological Survey is to complete the study of all phases of the geology of Canada, that is, to determine how and when the physical features originated, how and when the soils and other unconsolidated deposits were formed, and how and when the solid rocks and associated deposits were produced and assumed their present conditions. When the study has been completed, any only then, will it be possible to make a reliable estimate of the country's mineral resources. This appraisal embraces more than determining the value of already discovered deposits: it also involves attempting to establish what kinds of undiscovered deposits may be present and where they may occur. The estimating of the potential mineral wealth can be clone only after the geology of the country is known. Not until then will it be possible to forecast what types of valued deposits may occur in a district and what types will almost certainly be lacking. A thorough knowledge of the geology of the country is desirable not only to permit estimating the potential mineral resources but also as an aid in locating and developing mineral deposits whether these are of the nature of a bed of limestone, a seam of coal, a reservoir of petroleum, a vein, an irregular body of sulphides, or any other type of deposit.

Canadian nickel-copper ore deposits have been a major source of nickel, copper, cobalt and precious metals for more than 100 years. The two main minerals of interest, pentlandite (Pn, (Ni,Fe)9S8) and chalcopyrite (Cp, CuFeS2), are usually accompanied by large quantities of pyrrhotite (Po, Fe1-xS). Until the 1950s, Po containing small amounts of nickel was routinely smelted as part of the valuable Ni concentrate. The rapid growth in Ni demand following the Second World War created impetus to treat the Po separately. This action would liberate a valuable smelting capacity for higher value Pn, allow for recovery of Ni locked in Po, convert the Fe to iron oxide or metallic iron pellets, and recover S as sulphuric acid or elemental sulphur. The roasting process also has the potential to produce energy due to the highly exothermic oxidation of Po. The Ni industry would then have a “waste-free” process. Both Inco (now Vale) and Falconbridge (now Glencore) developed processes and built large industrial plants for this purpose that operated with some success. But technical issues and tenuous economics were continual challenges. By the early 1980s these industrial operations were closed. Sophisticated froth flotation methods of rejecting Po were developed, and Po containing up to 1% Ni became a waste material reporting to the tailings stream. As part of a major study on possible processing methods of Po for both value recovery and waste remediation, this paper presents a historical perspective on Canadian Po tailings with regards to their generation, inventory, value, and attempts to process them.

AERIAL survey methods have made enormous technical advances and gained new recognition since World War II. Before enlarging on this statement and reviewing some of the uses of aerial survey in industrial development it is important to de-fine what is meant by "aerial survey". The subject will be discussed in the broadest sense and references will be made to the four sections that compose the overall field of surveying operations from the air. These are: 1. Aerial photography and photo-graphic mapping. 2. The use of airborne electronic instruments for geodetic distance measurement and the determination of ground elevations. 3. Airborne geophysical surveying. 4. The extraction of qualitative and quantitative information from aerial photographs through the processes of "reading", analysis and interpretation. In the 1990’s, Técnicas Reunidas developed the Modified ZINCEX® Process to recover zinc from ores and secondary materials. The heart of this process was the use of solvent extraction to produce purified zinc electrolyte instead of traditional zinc dust cementation. This development was commercialized by Reunion Mining and Anglo American for primary ore at the Skorpion mine in Namibia with the first SHG zinc produced in May 2003. Horsehead Corporation through Horsehead Metal Products, Inc., its wholly owned subsidiary, is presently commercializing the MZP for the treatment of Waelz oxide. This paper will review open source information about the lessons learned and process modifications that have occurred at Skorpion over the past decade. It will also provide an update on Horsehead’s facility being constructed in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

"IN A SHORT PAPER it is impossible to do much more than to list the industrial minerals found in Saskatchewan and to give a brief description of the activity associated with each. I will not attempt to discuss the geology. It is sufficient to say that the settled part of the Province is covered by glacial drift which varies in thickness from a few feet to several hundreds of feet, and that this has hindered the search over much of the Province.CLAYA notable exception to this is the Cypress Hills area in the southwest corner which did not suffer any glacial action and where we find some of the large exposures of Cretaceous clays. In this area, the majority of the deposits are of stone-ware clays which are •an excellent raw material for such products as face brick and sewer pipe. Although the clay cannot be transported over any great distance it is used extensively in Alberta and Saskatchewan in the production of these products."
