Induced Polarization includes many types of dipolar charge distributions set up by the passage of current through consolidated or unconsolidated rocks. Among its causes are concentration polarization and electrokinetic effects in all rocks and the phenomenon of Overvoltage in rocks containing electronic conductors such as metallic sulphides and graphite. In normal rocks the polarization effects may be usually con-fined within relatively narrow limits and any large departures may be at-tributable to the presence of electronic conductors. In practice, Induced Polarization is measured in one of two ways. In the first a steady current of some seconds duration is passed and abruptly interrupted and the slowly decaying transient voltages existing in the ~round are measured after interruption. This is known as the "pulse", "transient", or Direct Cur-rent Induced Polarization (D.C.I.P.).The second method entails a comparison of apparent resistivities using sinusoidal alternating current of two or more frequencies, generally within the range of 1/10 to 10 c.p.s. THE law of our present industrial society is the law of the jungle. By this I mean survival of the fittest. I do not refer to man or animal or the development of superior genetic strain. Rather do I refer to one's product, one's process, or one's material of construction. Each must perform in a superior manner or it is doomed to extinction; it must be steadily improved so that it can meet the competition of ether materials, of other equipment, or other processes. We have before us the classic examples of the horse and buggy vs the automo-bile, cf silk vs nylon, of the steam locomotive vs the diesel engine; in each case, a superior product has virtually wiped out its predecessor. Furthermore, a product, process, or piece of equipment is sold on its performance, together with engineering data which define its •characteristics and performance. For the most part, the present day sales-man must deal in terms of engineering performance of his product; he must know competitive materials -their strength and limitations as well N either old fashioned salesmanship, tradition, nor custom could have saved the horse and buggy from extinction; a superior product which has been steadily and con-sistently improved won out, 'and in turn, this change-over caused a dramatic• change in our whole way of life.

The development of the Granduc mine presents a number of problems which are peculiar to its location and surrounding terrain. Because the development tunnels portal onto an area which is covered by an extensive glacier, and the mountain-side is subjected to dangerous snow slides, it was decided to construct an underground powerhouse to supply the necessary electric power and compressed air. This paper deals with the special problems inherent in the design and -construction of an underground plant. It involves the installation of diesel-electric generating equipment having an aggregate capacity of 1,050 kw.,and of air compressors with a total capacity of 2,400 cfm. Items dis-cussed include the selection of equipment to meet site conditions, the ventilation and cooling of the underground room, and the protection of personnel and equipment from explosions and fire. A short discussion on the automatic supervisory and alarm installation is also included. THE Granduc mine is located 135 miles north of Prince Rupert and 25 miles north of Stew-art. THE Ontario Research Foundation has developed a process for producing low-density steel shapes by direct reduction of iron oxide powders. The process is a combination of reduction, sintering (without compaction), and carburizing, and has been described by Cavanagh (1). Iron oxide powder, in the form of mill scale or highly concentrated iron ore, carefully sized, is poured into a porous mould. A reducing agent, generally coke breeze, is placed around this mould in a heat resistant sagger which is sealed off and heated to 2,000°F. for a number of hours. The coke/ ore ratio, the particle size distribution, the temperature and time of soaking, and the size and shape of the reduced product, determine the densities and carbon contents attained. The Defence Research Board sponsored a programme of research into some of the mechanical properties of the material (which was named Controlled Density Steel) and this paper is an account of various factors which govern the tensile strength of the steel. The ?practically attainable range of density is from 1.5 to 5.5 gm./ cc. but higher densities are obtained on hot working. This paper, however, is restricted to discussion of results for moulded products.

An electrochemical process is described for converting concentrates of base-metal sulphides to the corresponding pure metals and elemental sulphur. The application of the process to chalcopyrite is discussed. The process is also of potential interest in processing copper-nickel sulphides, and laboratory data concerning this potential are presented. The process creates neither air nor water pollution.

"Cyclic polarization technique and also potentiodynamic measurements were applied to study corrosion behavior of 13% chromium steels in chloride containing environment. Potentiodynamic measurements were performed at 25 and 75 °C with 0, 10 and 20 g/l NaCl in 0.01 M hydrochloric acid solution. At the same time, the significant pitting parameters such as corrosion potential (Ecorr), pitting potential (Epit), protection potential (Epro) and passive current (Ipass) of cyclic polarization curves with various NaCl concentration were analyzed and compared to describe the corrosion behavior of 13% chromium stainless steel. Surface measurement techniques such as SEM and EDS were used for morphology and analysis of corrosion products. The results showed that both temperature and Cl- concentration had significant effects on corrosion behavior of 13% chromium stainless steel in acidic solution.INTRODUCTION Of all the corrosion resistant alloys (CRA) used in oil and gas developments, martensitic stainless steels (MSS) are some of the most common ones these days. These steels not only have the advantages of normal steels: high strength, cost-effective, easy to manufacture, available in a wide variety of product forms, but they also have good CO2 corrosion resistance at higher temperatures as a result of their 11% minimum chromium content. One of the most common types of MSS used in the oil and gas industry is 13% chromium steel. NACE and API standards both reference several different varieties of 13% chromium steels for use in oil and gas projects(“Corrosion Resistant High Cr Steel for Oil and Gas Wells,” 2013). All types of 13% chromium steels have about 12 to 14% chromium and other minor alloying additions, and can be placed into two general groups: conventional and modified. Conventional 13% Cr steels (13Cr) are those most common in oil and gas, some of which are CA6NM (UNS J91150), AISI 410(UNS S41000), and AISI 420 (UNS S42000). These alloys have excellent corrosion resistance when compared to carbon steels up to about 300°F (150°C) and are used for a variety of wellhead, tubular, and downhole components however they have very limited resistance to cracking in H2S (Vallourec Group, 2015). Modified 13% Cr (M13Cr) steels came from the need for increased corrosion resistance at higher temperatures, increased H2S cracking resistance, and increased yield strength above 85 ksi (586 Mpa) primarily for tubular goods and other downhole equipment. These features were developed by taking a conventional 13Cr steel and adding nickel (Ni), molybdenum (Mo), copper (Cu), and other alloying elements. M13Cr provides better corrosion resistance than 13Cr up to about 350°F (177°C), yield strengths up to 110 ksi (758 Mpa), and also improved H2S cracking resistance(“Corrosion Resistant High Cr Steel for Oil and Gas Wells,” 2013)."

"IntroductionTHE LYNN LAKE MINE, situated in Manitoba about 150 miles north of Sherridon, has been actively developed by Sherritt Gordon Mines, Limited, during the past seven years, resulting in the establishment of a proven reserve of over 14,000,000 tons of ore containing 1.223 per cent nickel, 0.618 per cent copper, and additional cobalt values. For many years, the Sherritt Gordon Company operated a copper-zinc-gold mine at Sherridon but, as this mine was approaching exhaustion and as it was proposed to use the mining and milling equipment to treat the Lynn Lake ore, a number of unusual problems were faced in transferring plant and operations from the one mine to the other, and particularly in preparing to undertake nickel production.Preliminary investigation showed that the ore could be concentrated by flotation to produce a copper concentrate containing 28 to 30 per cent copper with less than 1 per .cent nickel, and a nickel concentrate containing 11 to 14 per cent nickel, 0.3 to 0.4 per cent cobalt, and less than 2 per cent .copper, with high recovery of the three metals in .the concentrates. It was apparent that, initially, the copper concentrate could be economically smelted and refined in the usual manner. But as the nickel concentrate contained an insignificant amount of precious metals (less than 0.02 oz. per ton) and as .it had a much higher nickel content than comparable concentrates normally produced from sulphide ores, the selection of a treatment process and the location of a plant required careful study."

"The relative-value (R-value), discrimination-factor (D-factor), and vector-ratio (V-ratio) method (RDVM) provides a geological knowledge-based statistical and geological-genetic interpretation scheme for geochemical data that enhances discovery in geochemical exploration. The practical advantage of RDVM is that it synthesizes geochemical features geologically related to ore-deposit discovery in three steps: reclassifying element concentrations using log-probability plots into R-values; calculating geologically defined D-factors from R-values; and determining V-ratios. D-factors are the sum of R-values, divided by the number of R-values summed. Based on the analyses selected, D-factors mimic rock or mineral deposit signatures. V-ratios refine interpretations of rock type and vector to orebody locations.RÉSUMÉ La méthode de la valeur relative (valeur R), du facteur de discrimination (facteur D) et du rapport de vecteurs (rapport V) (RDVM), fournit un schéma d’interprétation des données géochimiques basé sur les statistiques et les connaissances géologiques et la génétique géologique; ce schéma contribue aux découvertes en exploration géochimique. Abstract -The Corbet deposit is one of 17 proximal Cu-Zn massive sulfide deposits located. within the Noranda Cauldron which occurs within the core of the Noranda Volcanic Complex. The deposit is located at the top of the F1avrian Formation, the lowermost formation of the 3000 m thick Mine Sequence; the deposit has yielded 2.75 M tonnes of ore grading 30Jo Cu, 0.96% Zn, 2.06 g/t Ag and 1.0 g/t Au. The multi-lens Corbet deposit formed within a 250 m wide crater that occurs within a localized breccia pile. The Corbet breccia pile was constructed by explosive magmatic and hydrovolcanic eruptions localized along the south flank of a larger andesitic shield volcano that formed during the waning stages of F1avrian volcanism. The breccia footwall of the deposit allowed unfocused and widespread hydrothermal discharge that resulted in the development of a large area of chlorite and fringing sericite alteration that exceeds, by six times, the size of the sulfide lenses and represents a significant exploration target.

"5.1. IntroductionThe sample preparation requirements for bulk analyses of platinum-group elements (PGE) are different from the requirements for ore microscopy and in-situ analyses. It is necessary that the initial sample collection results in as representative a sample as possible for both types of analyses. Ingamells (1980) believes, however, that sampling is always imperfect and that there is no such thing as a truly representative sample. Once collected, the usual low content and irregularly dispersed nature of the PGE require that samples for bulk analyses be made as uniform as possible, whereas in samples for ore microscopy and in-situ analyses the PGE must be concentrated. Because of the generally high specific gravity of platinum-group minerals (PGM), certain precautions must be taken, such as mixing the sample material in the bags prior to opening.5.2. Preparation forBulk Analytical MethodsThe principal factors that determine the size of the sample required for a bulk analysis are grade, heterogeneity and grainsize. Initially, the grade and sample heterogeneity can only be estimated and a sampling methodology is developed with experience. It is essential at all times, however, that the assayers have information about the source of the sample and the purpose for the analysis. Information on the grain-size, which can only be obtained through mineralogical analysis, is also very important for PGE analyses, but, unfortunately, is often ignored.5.2.1. Samples fromUnconsolidated DepositsConcentrations of PGE may occur in eluvial deposits as well as in a large variety of alluvial deposits, including those of fluvial and glaciofluvial origin. These deposits are often difficult to map and sampling is further complicated by the wide range, from sand-size to boulders, of the non-POE-bearing constituents, and by the irregular distribution and shape of the ""pay streaks"". PGE concentrations in unconsolidated deposits are largely composed of resistant Pt-Fe and Os-Ir-Ru alloys (cf. Cabri and Harris, 1975 and Raicevic and Cabri, 1976), thus making comminution to the usual-150 to -200 mesh somewhat unreliable, due to the malleability of these alloys."

Sustainability now forms a critical part of metallurgical plant design. In addition to compliance with requirements and corporate principles, design engineers must also consider how community and societal responses to the metallurgical industry affect the way they design and build plants. Three broad areas to consider are: the design engineer’s contribution to sustainability through the design process and the relationship to the social license to operate (SLO)—the unwritten license communities give companies to safely and responsibly operate the plant and equitably share benefits; the realization of sustainability goals through methodologies emerging in the design activities; and the integration of design frameworks into a contemporary project design context and its investment objectives. This chapter explores sustainability in metallurgical plant design in the context of SLO, design tools and frameworks, and community and societal influences.

Introduction The discovery of artificial radioactivity, that is, of radioactivity of acorns other than those which are naturally radioactive, has increased vastly the possibility of using radioactivity as an analytical cool. The incomparable value of radioactive atoms, which are commonly termed tracers, arises from the extreme sensitivity of this analytical method. To get an idea of this extreme sensitivity it may be useful co recall that gravimetric analytical methods will not permit the weighing of anything much lighter than one-hundredth of a milligram of material. Under the most favourable circumstances, this represents an uncertainty in the answer of 1016 acorns, or 10,000,000,000,000,000 acorns. Accurate spectrographic methods possibly have a sensitivity 10,000 times greater than this, but the uncertainty is still of the order of 1012 atoms. The tracer permits ascertainment of decay of a single atom so that its sensitivity, without half trying, can be several orders of magnitude greater than that of any other method available co chemists. In addition co the sensitivity of tracers to which reference has just been made, tracers have another property which makes them unique. A radioactive atom is almost exactly like the corresponding non-radioactive acorn m regard to its electronic structure, and therefore in regard to its chemical properties. The nucleus is different, but the nucleus does not participate in chemical reactions. Therefore, a tracer acorn behaves like an ordinary atom until such time as its nucleus undergoes a catastrophic decay. This unique property permits one to use tracer acorns as atomic spies and therefore to follow the behaviour of acorns of a certain kind among their own kind. In other words, the tracer method permits us to study and measure what we call self-diffusion. All of the uses of tracers that have been made depend on the two properties co which reference has been made.

This paper relates cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&A) risk management theory to actual coal enterprises in China. The 3 phases of M&A are preparation, implementation and integration. By using the Analytic Hierarchy Process and fuzzy evaluation methods, we will try to establish a model to assess risks of the cross-border M&A of China?s coal enterprises. We then apply this model to the case of Yankuang Group acquisition of the Felix Company and receive the assessment results. There are significant reasons for quantitative research on risks of cross-border M&A of China?s coal enterprises, such as effective prevention and risk-aversion, and facilitation of cross-border M&As.

Abstract This paper is an account of an investigation made by the Dominion Observatory with a gravity meter and magnetometer over sulphide concentrations at East Sullivan, Val d'Or, Que., in June, 1947. The topographic relief over the area does not exceed 20 feet. The overburden varies from 0 co 50 feet. The west orebody had been outlined by extensive drilling. The average density contrast between the sulphide body and surrounding rocks is 0.5. Two hundred and sixty gravity and one hundred and ninety magnetic stations were observed. The results are shown on contour sketches. A derailed account is given of the methods employed to reduce the gravity observations. The survey shows that both gravimetric and magnetic methods are useful in delineating sulphide deposits under the conditions in which they occur at East Sullivan. The results indicate that the buried contact of the syenite intrusive southeast of the orebody could be traced with the gravimeter and chat the magnetometer was of little value for that purpose. Gravity anomalies due to the varying depths of overburden are negligible as compared to the magnitude of the total anomalies. Introduction The project was first suggested at a meeting of the Associate Committee on Geophysics of the National Research Council in September, 1946. At that time it was pointed out that the accuracy and speed of operation of the new gravity meters made them of special importance for geophysical prospecting and it was highly desirable to have an objective test of the performance of an instrument of this kind in delineating an orebody of known dimensions and density characteristics. Several years ago, a private company did some work with a gravimeter over the Amulet deposits, near Noranda. Unfortunately, the topography there is rather rugged, with hills and ravines exceeding 100 feet, so that the topographical effects rendered it impracticable to distinguish between anomalies due to the sulphides and those due to surface irregularities. An orebody of a typical nature, where the disturbing topographical corrections were not excessive, was therefore sought.

IT IS APPROPRIATE that your Institute should have chosen, for its 1956 Annual General Meeting, the Capital City of a province which is making such rapid advances in mining. The railway industry is proud to be playing an active role in this development, expenditures on equipment and railway construction in the Province of Quebec alone in recent years being in ?excess of a quarter of a billion dollars. In looking up some background material for this address I ran across a definition of a mine by Mark Twain, the great American humorist, which I thought might amuse you. He said that a mine was "a hole in the ground owned by a liar". I am sure that if he were alive to witness the enormous value attached to Canada's mineral resources today he would quickly change his definition. Canada's postwar record of mining development has been staggering in its variety and enormity. Historically, only the ?construction of our transcontinental rail ways outranks the largest of three of these development projects - the aluminum undertaking at Kitimat; the Quebec-Labrador iron ore deposits ; and the petroleum and natural gas developments in Wes tern Canada.

T HE APPROACH to maintenance must always be ?completely positive: there must be no question of putting off difficult problems until it is more convenient to tackle them. By this it is meant that a piece of machinery or equipment which, by experience, is known to be due for a check should not, merely because it appears to be operating satisfactorily, be left until it reaches a critical .condition and breaks down. The mentality of the Maintenance Manager must be completely orderly and methodical and he should, in fact, possess a ledger-book mind, having a debit and credit outlook. The debit side would be that applying to time out of service, cost in wages, material, personnel involved, etc., and the credit side that relating to continuous operational time of the locomotive and therefore to the ultimate benefit of the mine and the personnel who work there. The Maintenance Manager is not concerned with design problems, and although he and the personnel under his jurisdiction are not engaged in productive work, he and his staff do, nevertheless, add greatly to or detract from the overall efficiency of the organization. Provided the machinery placed in his care is good to start with, he must take the best steps he possibly can to keep it running. However, he may, on occasion, be forced to improvise and this is where the ingenuity of a clever man rises to the occasion.

Australian coking coals are either class 434<tlj534<2l, at Port Kembla, or 634<3> at Newcastle. The former yield good blast-furnace cokes; the latter yield poor ones. However, increases in conventional strength indices, by methods applicable with normal coking ovens, seem unlikely to be economically attractive. Characterization of the coals has enabled an "economic" blend to be developed in the Newcastle area, and this has affected mining, preparation and handling operations. Coking studies have led to a specification for the making of strong coke, especially from the high-volatile Newcastle coals. Continuous coking studies, developed from the efforts to make very strong coke, have taken two directions. Firstly, coking thin layers of coal on strands; secondly, coking, in various types of vessels, compacts of coals with or with-out the inclusion of non-coking coals, iron ores or other inert materials. Gas, "sand" and hot metal coking have been tested for use in compact coking. Particular attention has been paid to pellets of coal and ore. The probable industrial problems in adopting any of the ideas are presently being examined.

"The high copper demand as well as the lack of new high-grade deposits, are pushing the copper industry to process low-grade and refractory ores containing chalcopyrite. However, for a quantitative dissolution of copper from the chalcopyrite, the leaching performances still need to be improved. In the present research, we studied and optimized the iodide-assisted leaching of chalcopyrite in H2SO4-Fe2(SO4)3 media. The evolution of surface species during leaching was determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and mineral liberation analysis (MLA). Inductively-coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to determine the dissolved copper. Significance of experimental results was assessed by statistical analysis while a kinetic analysis of the leaching process was performed by fitting the experimental data with the Shrinking-core model. Results showed the significant positive effect of iodide on copper extraction rate. In the presence of KI, the dissolution rate of copper was almost double than in the parallel experiments without KI. Whether using KI or not, elemental sulfur was generated on the surface of the leached chalcopyrite. Nevertheless, in the presence of KI, the passivation layer did not arrest the leaching. Analysis revealed that the leaching rate was limited by the chemical reaction control step.INTRODUCTION Due to the large demand of copper, processing low-grade ores containing copper sulfides such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) has become unavoidable (Watling, 2013). Since ores with CuFeS2 may also contain appreciable amounts of arsenic that cannot be smelted, and because low-grade ores are uneconomic to smelt, the hydrometallurgical technologies are crucial for recovering the copper (Dutrizac, 1978). Sulfate-based processes are attractive because of the lower operating costs and because the sulfate ion is more suitable in case copper would be recovered via electrowinning. In ferric sulfate solution, chalcopyrite undergoes oxidation due to the large amount of Fe(III) and dissolution due to the presence of the sulfate ion (Majima, et al., 1985). Research on alternative lixiviants for gold is ongoing; however few people have looked at complete flowsheets. Alternative lixiviants are typically applied at concentrations 50 to 100 times those required for cyanidation. The higher concentrations make lixiviant recycle a vital part of the process. In addition it is no longer feasible to rely on lixiviant destruction to produce lixiviant free clean water for recycle to the comminution circuit. Ausenco has worked with Barrick to integrate reverse osmosis into the thiosulfate RIL processing flowsheet that forms the basis of the plant upgrade currently being constructed at Barrick’s Goldstrike autoclave facility.

MiningWatch Canada is the only national independent civil society organization with an exclusive focus on mining in Canada and Canadian mining companies operations internationally. In 2005, MiningWatch Canada collaborated with other NGOs to develop the Framework for Responsible Mining: A Guide to Evolving Standards. The project was the result of a perceived need by NGOs and retailers, particularly from the jewellery sector, for a framework that would set out environmental, social, and governance standards for the minerals sector ?providing recommendations for retailers and others seeking to source or invest responsibly, as well as regulate and encourage responsible mining practices?. This paper is a reflection on the Framework that examines key areas of concern and notes where the industry norms and expectations of civil society have evolved. The paper focuses on developments in social issues related to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, new initiatives associated with financial transparency, the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The environmental components of the Framework that are revisited are waste management, biodiversity, energy and climate change, environmental assessment, mine closure, mercury and seabed mining.
