The ISO TC 226 (Materials for the production of primary aluminium) has presently issued more than one hundred standards on the materials: alumina, pitch, petroleum coke, carbon anodes, carbon cathodes, ramming paste, fluorides and refractory). The object of the standardization work is to find methods that both material producers and smelters will accept. Methods that are specific for the operational conditions have been developed in addition to more traditional room temperature methods. Examples of important properties under operational conditions are: Air and C02 reactivity of anodes, Equivalent temperature for baked anodes, Sodium expansion of cathode blocks, Shrinkage and Rammability of paste, Penetration of electrolyte into refractories.

This paper presents and compares the physical properties of Gelfill and cemented hydraulic fill (CHF) obtained by lab experiments. Gelfill has an alkali activator such as sodium silicate in its materials in addition to primary materials of cemented mine backfill which are deslimed tailings, water and binders. The CHF and Gelfill samples with various mixture designs were cast and cured for 28 days. Initially, the influence of sodium silicate concentration on the mechanical properties of samples was evaluated using the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test. Consequently, the effect of curing temperature on CHF and Gelfill samples cured in various curing temperatures ranging from 5?50 °C was studied using the UCS test. Microstructure of selected samples was studied wirth the mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) technique. This study concludes that: (i) The mechanical properties of CHF can be improved by the addition of appropriate amount of sodium silicate. (ii) The rate of strength acquisition in Gelfill samples is faster than CHF samples over 28 days of curing period. (iii) Curing temperature strongly influences the mechanical and microstructural properties of CHF and Gelfill samples. (iv) The microstructure analysis revealed that the addition of sodium silicate can modify the pore size distribution and total porosity of Gelfill which can contribute to the better mechanical properties of Gelfill. (v) The MIP tests suggested the microstructure of specimens were changed by adding sodium silicate in a way that the Gelfill samples had a higher percentage of fine pores than CHF samples.

Micromixing of the fluid and the particulate phases in a continuous gibbsite precipitator was investigated for three different micromixing states, namely maximum mixedness (MM), complete segregation (CS), and maximum mixedness of the fluid but complete segregation of the particulates (MMF-CSP). The influence of the micromixing on continuous precipitation of gibbsite was studied at different precipitation conditions via simulation. Three different cases were considered with respect to the precipitation kinetics: (1) gibbsite secondary nucleation is favoured with slow crystal growth and agglomeration rates; (2) gibbsite crystal agglomeration and growth are dominant mechanisms with secondary nucleation suppressed; and (3) gibbsite crystal growth is the only relevant phenomenon. Simulation results for the cases (1) and (3) showed that the crystalline products for both the MM and MMF-CSP micromixing states were very similar, but the product obtained from the CS micromixing state was considerably different. This indicates that at those precipitation conditions the fluid micomixing has the dominant effect on the product properties, and the particulates micromixing effect is insignificant. However, when operated under the conditions of fast crystal growth and agglomeration kinetics, i.e. case (2), both the fluid and the particulates micromixing were found to affect the precipitation process, resulting in a significantly different product. The fair market value of an exploration property is determined by its potential to host a mineral deposit. This potential is gauged by the results of previous exploration, exploration stage, meaningful past expenditures and remaining targets that are not yet tested. Values of exploration properties can be viewed as distinct points in a three-dimensional space defined by orthogonal axes, namely: Exploration Stage (x-axis); Cumulative Expenditures (y-axis); and Property Value (z-axis). In general, these values are estimated by applying activity factors on previous exploration expenditures, e.g. an activity factor of 100% for an active property with good potential and a factor of 50% for an active property but past expenditures have not upgraded the property. At certain periods, a market factor may also be applied to reflect the activity of mineral property acquisitions. For properties that do not exhibit any exploration potential, only nominal values are applied.

The Red Lake greenstone belt is an irregular mass of lavas sedimentary rocks and intrusives which is approxiately 35 miles long 18 miles wide and 7 miles deep. Basaltic volcamcs are the oldest rocks w1thm the belt. They are believed to have been laid down on an ancient crust which is at least 3 billion (3 x 109) years old and was composed partly of sediments. The basaltic rocks are overlain by acid volcanics and sedimentary rocks which have been complexly folded and are preserved as a down-folded remnant of younger rocks within the older crust. The volcanics and sedimentary rocks of the greenstone belt have been cut by intrusives with a wide range of composition. The emplacement of the intrusives and the accompanying regional metamorph-ism which terminated the orogenic activity in this area are believed to have occurred approximately 2.4 billion years ago. The basalts and many of the basic and ultrabasic intrusives undoubtedly had their source in the sub-crust or mantle. At least some of the granitic intrusives are believed to have had

Two important parameters for dynamic recrystallization can be derived from the changes in the strain hardening rate: the critical strain for initiation of dynamic recrystallization and the point of maximum softening. In this work, these values are determined from the flow stress-strain data obtained in continuous compression testing in the range 900-1100°C. The resulting strains are used to calculate a kinetic model of dynamic recrystallization for two materials: 304 austenitic stainless steel and a hypereutectoid plain carbon steel. The mechanical parameters used to define the proposed model are confirmed with quantitative metallographic analysis of the recrystallized microstructure.

"A gold bearing concentrate containing 107 g/T of gold, 9.3% copper and 706 ppm of mercury was processed at the demonstration scale for the extraction of gold and copper using a cyanide free process. The concentrate was generated through flotation to upgrade the gold and copper grade, but also showed contamination with mercury. This concentrate was submitted to the DST process demonstration plant. The concentrate was first oxidized using a fluidized bed to produce a calcine. The mercury was volatilized during the oxidation stage with an efficiency higher than 98%. The mercury was condensed and removed from the sulfuric acid using a thiosulphate process. Copper was extracted from the calcine as copper sulphate using diluted sulfuric acid. The solid remaining after acid leaching was submitted to the DST chlorination process for gold extraction. Under optimized conditions, a gold extraction of 97.3% was achieved in the chlorination reactor. Gold was recovered from the pregnant brine by precipitation on silica using a DST proprietary process.INTRODUCTION Dundee Sustainable Technologies Inc. (DST) offers proprietary metallurgical processes for the treatment of material from the mining industry. DST processes enable the extraction of precious metals and for the removal and stabilization of contaminants, such as arsenic, from ores and concentrates. DST provides environmentally-friendly, viable and efficient processes, capable of handling complex and refractory ores which cannot be processed with conventional approaches due to metallurgical issues or environmental considerations. Several mining jurisdictions around the world have banned or restricted the use of cyanide. DST has developed a closed loop chlorination process as an alternative to the conventional cyanidation process for the extraction of precious metals from minerals. The tailings from the process are inert from toxic substances such as cyanide and organic compounds, are sulphide depleted which means they do not generate acid, and thus, meet and/or exceed environmental norms. The process has demonstrated excellent gold recoveries within a fraction of the time needed for cyanidation to obtain similar results. Moreover, the closed loop process does not generate any liquid effluent and does not consume much water: it only requires a water make-up to compensate for moisture leaving with the tailings and by-products, and seawater may be used. The improved environmental footprint of the DST process has been certified by the Environment Technology Validation program (ETV) which provides an independent evaluation of the performance claims of innovative technologies."

ABSTRACT Oil sands production occurs on a massive scale, making orebody estimation a challenge. In rainy conditions, operators can have difficulty accessing ore at the mapped location. Without enough inventory as a buffer, the high-cost stockpile is depleted quickly, necessitating the removal of significant amounts of overburden and interburden to meet plant feed requirements. The inventory curve—a plot of ore inventory on a period-by-period basis—plays an important role in selecting an appropriate scheduling scenario. This paper presents a programmable method for creating an inventory definition by using a pit optimization tool.

The effects of various mechanisation and process changes can be rapidly modelled and compared.This technology will provide mill maintenance managers and contract relining companies with the opportunity to benchmark current performance against world’s best practice. It will also provide an opportunity for concentrator plant designers and mill manufacturers to plan for maximum plant efficiency, by designing an infrastructure and equipment combination that maximises annual plant availability.This simulation tool and its associated data set, has been developed using recent grinding mill performance data from mills of varying dimensions, liner configurations, mill relining equipment, operator and tool variables.The simulation will provide an output that the various stakeholders can utilise to make optimal decisions within the given financial, physical and technological constraints of the individual concentrator plant."

The D bolt is not only able to accommodate large rock deformations, but can also provide a load-bearing capacity as high as that of rebar bolts. Furthermore, the anchoring quality of the D bolt is similar to rebar bolts because of its multi-point anchoring design.

Cold gas dynamic spray is an innovative technology allowing the deposition of thin metallic layers on a bulk or sheet substrate. Titanium on aluminum deposition is very attractive to the aeronautic industry, due to the enhanced corrosion resistance and wear properties of titanium coating as well as its improved compatibility with CFRP, preserving the reduced cost of aluminum substrate. One main drawback, however, is related to the micro-porosity of the deposed layer, negatively affecting the corrosion barrier performance. In this paper, the effect of selective laser post-treatment on pure grade 2 titanium coatings on AA2020-T3 sheets was experimentally and numerically investigated. Morphological features, microstructure and chemical composition of the treated zone were assessed by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. Microhardness measurements were also carried out to evaluate the mechanical properties of the treated coating. A numerical model of the laser treatment, based on a finite volume scheme, was implemented and solved to simulate the process and discuss the experimental outcomes. Obtained results highlighted the key role played by heat input and dimensional features on the effectiveness of the treatment.

"The Santa Rita mine is located in north eastern part of Bahia in Brazil and is owned and operated by Mirabela Mineração do Brasil Ltda. Typical SABC circuit was designed as the preferred option for the 4.0 mtpa (500tph) to produce a P80 of 125um for flotation. Although the SAG was originally designed to operate with conventional radial pulp lifters, later it was fitted with Outotec’s Turbo Pulp Lifters – TPL (Latchireddi, 2005). The milling circuit commenced commissioning on the 24th of October 2009 and the milling circuit achieved the nameplate capacity within days. with small and relatively simple measures to rectify. Since commissioning, the SAG mill has been working in fully autogenous grinding (FAG) mode with no balls (in contrast to the estimated 10% ball charge) and has been consistently treated up to 650tph.This paper examines the comminution design process, the operating philosophies, start-up experiences, post commissioning optimization and future development works. An evaluation of mill performance relative to the design criteria for the project life to date is also included."

"A technique for on-line simultaneous estimation of gas and solids holdup (volume fraction), based on a combination of conductivity and pressure difference measurements, is proposed and tested in a laboratory flotation column (10cm in diameter and 447cm in height). Fundamental concepts underlying this technique and the effect of relevant parameters are discussed. In the studied range, 3-30 %v/v gas holdup and 2-18 % v/v solids holdup, experimental results showed good agreement between the estimated and actual holdup values (as determined by an isolating technique). The relative accuracy of the solids holdup estimation increased when solids density or solids concentration increased. Frequent re-calibration of pressure transducers was found necessary for accurate phase holdup estimation.IntroductionGas holdup is a key parameter in controlling the performance of flotation columns. For example, flotation rate is affected by bubble size and gas rate both of which, in turn, affect gas holdup. Moreover, gas holdup also determines the slurry residence time which indicates a direct influence of gas holdup on recovery.Gas holdup determination has been the focus of many studies (e.g., Castillejos, 1986; Marchese et al., 1992). Some of the techniques which have been used are given in Table 1."

"Abstract - The size, morphology, surface texture, per cent mineral inclusions, and bulk chemistry (Ag and trace elements) of placer gold particles vary systematically according to transport distance from source rocks, as indicated by a case study from the Pioneer district in Montana, and data from the literature.Placer gold samples show a rapid decrease in mean and maximum particle length, and a gradual increase in flatness index (F.I. = length + breadth/2 X thickness) from about F.I. = 2 in bedrock deposits, to as much as F.I. = 45 over transport distances of several tens of kilometers. Primary mineral inclusions (mainly quartz, sulfide minerals, and iron oxides) are mostly lost within 10 km to 20 km of fluvial transport; this loss of quartz and trace metals causes a major change in bulk chemistry of placer gold samples. Following the loss of inclusions and the development of flakes, edges of flakes are folded and the mean number of folded edges in a sample increases with distance. When viewed under the electron microscope, surface textures of placer gold particles also become progressively more pitted with distance.Analysis of placer gold particles can be used to help evaluate placer source-area problems (placers with no known hard-rock gold deposits). For example, coarse placer gold containing abundant inclusions indicates a proximal source. On the other hand, an abundance of thin flakes is evidence of a long transport distance and possible reworking from older gravels. Placer gold characteristics can therefore provide information on distance to mineralized source rocks."

"Westmin Resources Ltd. operates the 3300 TPD H-W underground copper/zinc mine on Vancouver Island. Ore storage underground is handled in a 6000 tonne coarse ore bin and a 3000 tonne fine ore bin. Both of these bins have experienced significant wear since excavation and construction in 1985. Wear problems have included both deteriorating rock walls as well as worn out steel liners and concrete at the discharge points from the bins. Extensive rehabilitation work was completed in 1993.The basis o/this paper is the rehabilitation work done on the coarse ore bin. The design and installation of ground control measures are discussed. The bin access methods used to allow the work to proceed quickly and safely are also presented. This involved the use of a Tekfoam safety bulkhead to protect workers.IntroductionMine DescriptionThe H-W mine was commissioned in 1985. Mine access is by vertical shaft with most production areas at a depth of about 500 m. Host rocks are composed of andesite and rhyolite. Mine capacity of 3300 tonnes per day is achieved mainly by longhole open stoping methods, complemented by room and pillar mining. Metals recovered from the massive sulphide ore are copper, zinc, gold, and silver. Mineable reserves at January I, 1994 were 9.7 million tonnes."

"The Magino gold mine is located 45 km northeast of Wawa, Ontario. There was limited gold production in the late thirties. The present operation was officially opened in October 1988 and produced gold until September 1992. It was a 635 tonnes per day, decline-accessed mine, with ore coming from several small blast hole and shrinkage stopes.The host for the gold is the Webb Lake granodiorite stock which was intruded into the Goudreau Lake Deformation Zone. This east-northeast-striking deformation zone overprints the generally east-west- striking isoclinally folded metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks, which make up the east end of the Michipicoten greenstone belt. The ore-shoots are controlled by dextral delatancy associated with the Goudreau Lake Deformation Zone. Shearing, bleaching and silicification accompanied the gold emplacement. IntroductionThe following is a general information paper on the Magino gold mine which is located 45 km- northeast of Wawa toward the east end of the Michipicoten greenstone belt. This paper summarizes the discovery, exploration and development history of the deposit. The geological characteristics are described, including regional geological setting, local mine geology, mineralization, alteration and structural history. The mining methods and the contribution of the geological staff to the successful development and mining of the gold deposit are also mentioned."

A new class of spongy Au catalysts is studied for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by propene under leanburn conditions. The spongy catalyst is an unsupported powdered Au that consists of micrometer particles (~5 microns) that have nanometer scale (~10 nm) internal skeletal structures. The effects of alloying 1 ? 50 atom % platinum group metals (M= Pt, Pd, Rh) and 5 wt% first row transition metals (M = Ti, Mn, Fe, Co) were studied. Even low additions of PGMs (1 at.%) cause significant shifts to lower temperature regions of activity and the largest shift is obtained for Rh. For Rh this is interpreted as a strong synergistic interaction between Rh and Au. Possibly related to the Rh effect, Co is the only other metal studied that lowers the temperature of NOx reduction. The other first row transition metals inhibit the reduction reaction.

"Resin-anchored rebar is commonly used for rock support in mining. The rock properties and environment determine the average bond strength, allowing mine engineers to select the appropriate length and installation pattern for the support. In weak material such as potash, the average bond strength tends to be lower than for a typical hard-rock installation. Determining the failure mechanism by which the support fails in soft-rock applications could lead to improved bond strength and better calculated installed support capacity. This paper reports on research conducted at a potash mine in Saskatchewan and analyzes the failure mechanism of the support.RÉSUMÉ Dans les mines, les barres d’armature enduites de résine sont fréquemment utilisées pour soutenir le roc. L’environnement et les propriétés du roc déterminent la résistance moyenne d’adhésion, permettant ainsi aux ingénieurs miniers de choisir la longueur de barre appropriée et le diagramme d’installation du soutien. Dans des matériaux faibles, tels que la potasse, la résistance moyenne d’adhésion tend à être plus faible que pour une installation typique dans de la roche dure. ABSTRACT: The development and evolution of the gravity recoverable gold (GrG) test procedure at McGill university is reviewed in this paper. Since the late 1980s, the research group led by the late Professor André Robert Laplante at McGill university has undertaken fundamental studies and applied research of the Knelson concentrator to develop a sustainable method of estimating GrG. Historically, a concept of “free gold” was used, and it was de?ned as the gold that could be separated and recovered from gold ore by amalgamation. Due to health and safety hazards, the practical use of amalgamation has declined. around 1994, a methodology using a 3-in Knelson concentrator to measure gravity recoverable gold was established at McGill university. as a result of more than 10 years of improvement and optimization, this technique has become a standard method of evaluating GrG for gold ores, gold plant streams and platinum group metals. By 2006, about 200 GrG tests were carried out at McGill universityon ores from all over the world. recently, a modi?ed version of the GrG test (a simpli?ed test) was developed to provide a quick and rough estimate of the GrG in a sample; this simpli?ed test has theadvantage of reduced mass, processing time and cost. to recognize and honour the contributions madeby the late Professor Laplante towards the establishment of a standard test procedure for assessing gravity recovery potential, the authors propose that the GrG test be named after Laplante.
