"Phosphate tailing is a kind of industrial waste that emitted from separation processing of phosphate ores, which is usually discarged to the tailing pond without treatment. Recovery of phosphorus from tailings is of great significance for comprehensive utilization of phosphorus resource. Chemical composition of a micro-fine cryptocrystalline phosphate tailing was investigated by X Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES), and mineral composition and occurrence of harmful elements were analyzed by optical microscope and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X ray Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (X-ray EDS) and Mineral liberation Analyzer (MLA). On the basis of above, effects of those on mineral processing for phosphate tailing was analyzed. Chemical analysis results in combination with microscopy indicated that there is a certain amount of iron and aluminum and it should focus on the removal of them in separation processing. The cryptocrystalline structure, especially the micro banding structure and micro porphyritic structure indicated that there is quite amount of phosphate in fine particles and it should recovery the phosphorus as much as possible when designing the flotation technology for this difficult separation fine phosphate tailing. This study can provide theoretical guide for efficient phosphorus recovery of from fine phosphate tailing by flotation.INTRODUCTIONPhosphate rocks are vital nonrenewable resources and are essential components in agricultural fertilizers and phosphorous-based chemicals (Gharabaghi et al., 2009). About 95% of the phosphate produced around the world is consumed in the fertilizer industry (page 60 Abdel-Zaher, 2008; Jasinski, 2007). Froth flotation, a solid wettability based separation process is widely used in separation of phosphate rock and shown to be effective (Yehia et al., 1990; Singh et al., 1992; Elgillani and Abouzeid, 1993; Al-Fariss et al., 2013) .Poor selectivity and low recovery for micro-fine particles are hard issues in flotation of middle-low grade phosphate ore because Phosphate resources is becoming poor, fine and complex as the rich ores run out since the 1970s. The rapid depletion of high grade ores forces minerals industry to process low grade ores where finer grinding is required to achieve required liberation of the values, making the fine particle flotation inevitable. the performance of conventional flotation deteriorates rapidly as particle size decreases to below 10-20 µm, depending on the density of the particles (Feng and Aldrich, 1999). To date, fine particle flotation is still considered to be a challenge in mineral processing (Li et al., 2015) ."

"In the first half of 1990, Cambior earned $1104 million, or $0.37 per share, on revenues of$66.4 million. The 1989 results achieved despite a lower average gold price, resulted from a higher level of commercial gold production and a 115% increase in investment income over 1988. Investment income rose to $3,568,000 in 1989 due to higher levels of cash assets.Cambior's mine operating costs increased 19% to $68,561,000 in 1989 from $57,472,000 in 1988. This increase resulted from rising operating costs at the Doyon Mine ($250/oz to $274/oz) due to the shift from open pit to underground operations, as well as from the start -up of three new mines with relatively higher costs. These costs have reached a stable level that should be maintained for the next few years.In 1989, net exploration expenses were $6,838,000, down 31070 from 1988, partially due to the Canadian tax reforms introduced since 1987. Depreciation and depletion grew by $1,432,000 in 1989, reflecting a higher volume of commercial production from the Pierre Beauchemin, Lucien C. Beliveau and Chimo mines.Net earnings for 1989 amounted to $17,661,000 or $0.73 per share compared to $17,438,000 or $0.74 per share in 1988.Cambior has an exceptionally liquid and strong balance sheet. As at December 31, 1989, net working capital stood at $85.6 million, with a total assets base of $338.6 million. With a long-term debt (including gold loans) of $21.5 million and shareholders' equity of $277.2 million, Cambior has a debt to equity ratio of 8%. All but about $100,000 of long-term debt is in the form of gold loans.The total market value for Cambior's stock as at September 10, 1990, stands at $420million, based on recent stock market prices. This will progress further into the most likely changes in chemical and physical requirements of the ore products. No definite target can be set for 1990, but the logic from the direction of the changes will be established.IntroductionThe tonnage and quality of iron ore produced in the eighties will be heavily influenced by energy and investment considerations. That's not a great pronouncement, but this paper will explain how these two factors are :(I) influencing a disproportionate growth of electric furnace capacity and a greater use of scrap for iron units, in place of Iron ore;(2) influencing chemistry specifications; and(3) causing extensive examination of ore agglomerate form. Underhand cut and fill mining is being planned for selected areas at the David Bell Mine where high ground stresses have resulted in particularly challenging mining conditions. In order to test the placement and performance of a variety of underhand cut and fill paste mats three different designs have been installed and extensively instrumented along the A-Zone 9C ore sill. The sill is approximately 87m long, 4.0m high, and 5.0m average width. The sill was broken into 3 sections each of which will contain one of the sill mat designs. The underhand sill will be mined 3.75mW x 4.0mH, allowing for some overbreak while minimizing the risk of the back span exceeding the design limit of 4.0mW. Each test sill mat includes pre and post-support and includes 0.5m (18?) broken muck mat placed along the sill floor. Upon developing beneath these mats quantitative and qualitative measures will be used to determine which design is the most suitable for application in underhand mining at David Bell.

Marathon PGM Corporation?s PGM-Cu Project in Northwestern Ontario (Figure 1.0) serves as a case study to describe the process involved in advancing a deposit from grass roots exploration to the completion of several feasibility studies and the parallel commencement of environmental permitting. Through the following examination of historical exploration activities, it is clear that these activities are directly related to economic stimulus, mostly measured by downturns in the mineral industry. Other factors that influence the success of exploration advancing to feasibility and new mine development includes the ownership of the mineral claims, which also changes under these economic influences and the crucial role of interactions between the Company, the Crown and First Nations. The Marathon PGM-Cu deposit is hosted within the Eastern Gabbro Series of the Proterozoic Coldwell Complex, which intrudes and bisects the much older Archean Schreiber-Hemlo Greenstone Belt. The sub-circular complex has a diameter of 25 km and a surface area of 580 km2 and is the largest alkaline intrusive complex in North America (Walker et al., 1993). Mineralization at the Marathon PGM-Cu deposit is part of a very large magmatic system that consists of at least three cross-cutting intrusive olivine gabbro units that comprise the Eastern Gabbro Series of the Coldwell Complex (Figure 3.2.4-3). In order of intrusion, the three gabbroic units consist of (1) Layered Gabbro Series, (2) Layered Magnetite Olivine Cumulate (LMOC) and (3) Two Duck Lake (TDL) Gabbro. The relative size and abundance of the gabbroic units decrease in the order Layered Gabbro Series>TDL Gabbro>>LMOC. Late quartz syenite and augite syenite dikes cut all of the gabbros but form a minor component of the intrusive assemblage.

"Nanisivik Mines Ltd. operates a 10-M W diesel-electric generating plant at its zinc-lead operation on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic. This paper provides a description of the plant and the integrated waste heat recovery system. Data is presented detailing the actual costs of operating a plant over a period of seven years. Problems in operation are described as well as the success of the plant in meeting its objectives over the years. IntroductionNanisivik is located on the shore of Strathcona Sound at the north end of Baffin Island (Fig. I). Nanisivik Mines Ltd. has operated a 2,100 tonne per day zinc-lead underground mine and a concentrator, together with supporting infrastructure, at this location since October 1976. Annual production of 100 000 tonnes of zinc and 10 000 tonnes of lead concentrate is transported by ship to Europe during the mid -July to mid October shipping season.All electrical needs of the project are provided by the company-owned and -operated power plant. Facilities served by this electrical system are the underground mining areas, the concentrator and industrial area, a townsite, airport, and shiploading dock complex."

Since the beginning of time, people later to be known as engineers and architects have strained to create methods whereby they could improve technology to assist them in their various fields of endeavour. Some of these improvements would be the change from linen paper, french chalk and ink pens to drafting film , mylar an d pencil for the production of drawings, the drafting machine in lieu of the tee and set squares, even tap e to attach drafting media to the board instead of thumb tacks and man y, man y more. All of these taken individually are insignificant but combined evolve to the current state-of-the-art in the computerized engineering environment. Ten years ago the major topic o f conversation was the hand-held calculator which for a cost of around $150 would give most trigonometric functions. Today the equivalent calculator can be purchased for around $25, is about one third the size, and if inflation were included over the last ten year s the item should cost around $550 in today' s dollars, it can be seen that tremendous advances not only in the technology but also the cost saving. "Mining industry has been the building blocks for human development through millennia and will continue to play its role in sustainability and meeting society’s needs for raw material. In the way towards sustainability, the next generation of efficient and heavy duty of Sandvik’s crushers, CH860 and CH865, are introduced for efficient crushing. As the secondary, tertiary and/or pebble crusher, these new crushers are designed to over perform in tough mining environment. Featuring higher crushing forces relative to the mantel diameter and 500 kW motor, combined with advanced automation system, i.e., sophisticated HydrosetTM and Automated Setting Regulation (ASRTM), combined with overpressure system with dedicated air supply in dust collar, etc., the new crushers provide higher safety, productivity, and reliability with the same foot-print of conventional cone crushers.Since crushers are more energy efficient than mills it makes sense to effort in fine crushing to save energy and protect environment. That has been the logic behind development and introducing stronger and more efficient crushers by Sandvik. The results on crushing hard iron and gold ores by CH865 have proven its efficiency in fine crushing at a higher productivity, availability and reliability rates through increasing throughput for defined size fraction and extended crushing chamber liner life.Within this paper the performance of the CH865 to deal with two different ores are presented discussed with a glance at how the downstream milling process can be benefited by saving energy and reducing the operation cost. In plant practice, the implementation of the new CH865 provides between 25 and 30% of the crushed ore in the size range of first step milling, i.e., < 2 mm, that offers opportunity for reduction in energy consumption in milling and even changing the process plant configuration by directly forwarded that part to gravity separation. Furthermore, potential of converting the rod mill to ball mill to improve productivity has been considered by plant engineers. Furthermore, some potential applications for such efficient crushers are brought into considerations and discussed. The new developments provide about 30% higher crushing force to efficiently deal with competent ores and pebbles. The CH860 and CH865 crushers are well suited to replace conventional secondary and tertiary crushers respectively; nevertheless, CH865 is virtual option for pebble crushing in SAG and AG milling circuits."

In the thiosulfate leaching of gold, degradation of the thiosulfate reagent is a major cost. One of the intermediary degradation products is trithionate, which also inhibits gold recovery from solution by ion exchange. Little attention has been given to this species in the context of gold leaching - the limited information on trithionate and its solution chemistry available in the literature is seldom directly related to gold leaching conditions. This review is a compilation of the published knowledge on trithionate, with a specific focus on identifying the relevance of this information to gold leaching and the shortcomings in the knowledge base.

"A mine shaft is one main development method of establishing access in an underground mine. The construction technology of the mine shaft sinking is complicated and large equipment setup on surface and in the mine shaft. The paper briefly reviews a single-line operation method, parallel operation method and mixed operation method as well as the features of the one operation method with the excavation, lining and installation. The special construction technology mainly would include ground freezing methods, full diameter shaft drilling methods, caisson methods, grouting technology and concrete curtain methods as well as other methods. The paper summarizes the shaft sinking numbers and effects by the special construction methods during different periods. The paper states the shaft sinking conditions and the each created record conditions in the coal, metallurgy, non-ferrous metal, hydropower, highway, railway, nonmetallic and other industries. The paper has a prediction on the shaft sinking requirements and development tendency in the future for China.INTRODUCTIONA mine shaft is one main development method of access in an underground mine. In recent years in China the new shaft mines represent 45% of the total number of new mines. With the development of new mining area under construction and the development of deeper mines, the ratio of the mine shaft as access for underground mines will increase. The construction technology of the mine shaft engineering will be complicated, the operation site footprint will be small and the working environment will be more difficult. The mine shaft sinking operation will often be varied by the geological conditions and affected by underground water inflows, seam gas outbursts, geothermal and other natural conditions. The safe construction of the mine shaft sinking will be challenged by all these conditions. Although the mine shaft engineering will only be about 5% of the total mine roadway engineering, the mine shaft construction period often will take over 40% of the total mine construction period. With the progress of modernized mine production technology and the construction of a high production and high efficient mine, the mine transportation roadways mostly would be set in the seam and the engineered amount of the mine rock roadways reduced year by year could cause more prominent long extensions of the mine shaft construction period. Therefore, in order to speed up the construction, to shorten the mine construction period and to realize the investment benefits as early as possible, the technical level of the mine shaft sinking should firstly be improved and the construction speed of the mine shaft engineering and sinking should be speeded up, which would have important significant benefits."

INTRODUCTION CHURCHILL river was named for John Churchill, first Duke of Marl-borough and third Governor of the Hudson&apos;s Bay Company, in the latter part of the 17th century, some fifty years after the ill-fated Danish expedition, led by Munck, had abandoned the site of the now famous seaport of Churchill, as a worthless, cold, disease-ridden country. No other attempts were made to explore the interior until the river basin became a part of the grant to the Hudson&apos;s Bay Company and began to play its part in furnishing the luxury of fine furs to civilized people as it had furnished the necessities of food and dress for untold centuries to uncivilized natives. This was the sole contribution of the region to the economic life of the country for some two hundred and fifty years, until 1926, when the power site at Island Falls was discovered by engineers seeking a cheap power source to make possible the development of the great ore-body at Flin Flon. DRAINAGE BASIN OF CHURCHILL RIVER The river is some 1,325 miles long. Rising in the headwaters of the Beaver river, in east-central Alberta, it flows in an easterly direction across Saskatchewan and northeasterly across Manitoba to Hudson bay, through a remarkable basin of some 115,500 square miles, only 6,000 square miles less than the area of the British Isles. A journey down this river leads one through three distinct belts of country, each vastly different from the others geologically and in surface characteristics. For the first five hundred miles the river flows through a basin of 36,000 square miles of the great central-plains country, which is covered with fertile soil and carpeted in its southern part with prairie grass, which gradually gives way to the mixed forests of poplar, spruce, birch, and jackpine in the northern and eastern sections: About midway across Saskatchewan, bald-headed knolls and ridges begin to make their appearance as the river meets the western margin of the Canadian Shield. Then, for some seven hundred miles, it passes through country underlain by the pre-Cambrian rocks of the Shield, which continue to within one hundred miles of Hudson bay. Here the character of the country again changes to a low, clay plain underlain by sandstone, and through this &apos;clay belt&apos; the river flows between steep clay banks, to empty into Hudson bay.

"The syngenetic and epigenetic mechanics of sedimentation and deformation of coal seams resulted in various types of internal structure, as listed below:TYPE I-massive structure with evenly distributed coal constituencies of integrated mechanical properties.TYPE II-broad-banded structure, with bright and dull coal bands of differential mechanical properties.TYPE III-heterogeneous structure, with sheared coal bands and partings of sectional mechanical properties.TYPE IV-contortional structure, with refolded coal layers and deteriorated mechanical properties.TYPE V-porous structure of orogenically crushed and pulverized coal, with disintegrated mechanical properties.The study suggests criteria for the estimation of coal seam internal structure (gamma-gamma density log and cracks density log), which might be related to the evaluation of strata stability and coal mineability.IntroductionIt is common knowledge that coal seams have various internal structures due to different syngenetic and epigenetic events. Investigations of the internal structure of coal seams have been carried out in the coal fields of Western Canada, as follows: geological field studies of coal-bearing strata;?,geophysical borehole surveying studies;?,geological borehole logging and crack density;?,underground phenomenological studies of mine structure;?,chemical coal analysis; and?,mechanical testing of coal samples.These investigations eliminated a large number of criteria previously established for the estimation of coal seam internal structure and indicated that, from an engineering point of view, only two of them are sufficient:(I) density of seam profile (inferred from gamma-gamma log);(2) density of crack s (inferred from geological log).On the basis of these criteria, five main structural types of coal seams have been classified, which might be related to mechanics of deformation and &apos; failure of mine structures."

"The Edmonton region accounted for 40% of Alberta&apos;s sand and gravel production in 1981 (about 12 million m3). Most of this production was by commercial operations (75%) for use in essential public works projects (64% in road and asphalt production).Although the Alberta Geological Survey delineated 1157 million m3 of gravel, a number of areas are considered to be in short supply. An econometric model was used for forecast demand in the region. Predictions, based on this forecast and estimated supply, are that 15% of the region&apos;s gravel and 3% of the sand will be consumed by the year 2010.The City of Edmonton is the largest consumer of aggregate in the region. Approximately 40% of the gravel in Edmonton&apos;s current supply area (about 55 km radius) will be used by 2010. These estimates are considered optimistic because the supply figures do not account for sterilization of deposits - some has already taken place in the region. If 25% to 50% of Edmonton&apos;s current supplies (one major deposit) were sterilized it would result in $1,000 million of additional cost due to increased haulage alone.Information on the value of aggregate resources, the location of sand and gravel deposit s and forecast demand has been made available to all municipalities in the region to aid planners and regulators in effective future use of this important resource.INTRODUCTIONAlberta is the second largest producer of sand and gravel in Canada at ab out 50 million tonnes annually. Value of provincial production exceeded $120 million in 1985. In Albert a, aggregate is used primarily in road and building construction (about 50% and 15%, respectively) and is important in such activities as petroleum exploration, oil sands development and the forestry industry.The Edmonton region (Fig. I) accounts for about 40% of provincial production and has a per capita consumption rate of about 13.4 m3 of sand and gravel per annum. Although Edmonton dominates, with approximately 50% of regional production going into the city, aggregate is produced in every county and municipal district in the region.Sand and gravel is essential to the current way of life in the Edmonton region. The resource is valuable and dwindling. The Alberta Geological Survey (a department of the Alberta Research Council) has collected information on aggregate in this region for the last decade which ca n aid government planners and regulators in pre venting sterilization and misallocation of this critical resource. This paper is a summary of that information."

"Unique production and environmental problems are associated with multiple seam mining where dragfines are used for overburden and interburden removal. On the production side, the problems are decreased dragfine efficiency in chopdown operations, the general need for spoil rehandle, complications in sequencing stripping and coal handling operations, and potential stability problems in highly stacked spoil. Many variations of dragline methods have been reported in the literature to encounter these problems. Because of the physical properties and peculiar hydrology of sub-arctic region mining of multiple seams in such areas probably could not be done with the methods used in temperate regions.The properties of thawed material would make spoil hard to place in a stable manner and thus would influence the mini sequence. For instance, multiple seam mining which requires some rehandling of spoil and prolonged exposure of overburden and interburden material might be precluded by the instability of thawed spoil and therefore mining techniques have to be modified. Since the deployment and operation of a dragline in modes different from conventional schemes will affect productivity, it will be necessary to study the effects on production of changing the dragfine operational schemes. This paper presents a heuristic simulation model of multi-seam dragline operation of a sub-arctic mine that can be used to analyze the handling of overburden and detailed study of the dragfine performance."

Coal, as well as a large part of other minerals in Canada, is produced by surface mining methods. This has resulted in short and long-term accumulation of waste rock in dumps. Two main problems arise from the flow of water through these dumps: stability of dumps and the impact on stream flows. In recent years, a number of mines have started placing waste rock in valleys for general disposal or far constructing mine access road ways. All these have created challenges in the following areas: effective design of dumps and flow-through dams; stability monitoring of the structures; environmental impacts downstream by way of increased amount of fines in suspension, sedimentation, and toxic substances; and long-term status of flow and flood. Similar situations also exist in many civil engineering structures. This paper discusses the status of rock drains and the immediate and future research needs.

"In this study, the authors investigated the stabilities of slopes cut predominantly into Trenton limestone in a large quarry in the Montreal region. Analyses of the bench and pit walls indicated that small-scale toppling, ravelling, and wedge failures are the most likely modes of instabilities. Because most of the joints dip steeply, however, the conclusion was made that relatively high walls could probably be justified.The field investigations were supplemented with the determinations of the shearing strengths of artificial discontinuities that were cut into samples of the limestone. The properties of a fine-grained limestone were found to be influenced very much by the magnitudes of the loads that were applied, while the properties of a crystalline limestone were found to be much less, or not load-dependent.The study is one of a number that are being conducted in this area.IntroductionExtensive quarrying has been done in the sedimentary strata of the Montreal area for a very long time. By any standards, it can be said that the Island of Montreal is a major mining area. At present, approximately 20 quarries are being operated in, or near, the city of Montreal.In addition to the millions of tons of limestone that are removed each year, a large number of excavations for foundations are cut into the sedimentary rocks.To date, however, very little information has been published concerning the engineering properties of the local geological materials. No mention is made of this aspect in the references which are presently available.Because of this lack of information, the senior author has initiated a study in which the strength properties of most of the rock types, and of the natural discontinuities contained in these, would be investigated. To date, the results of one other investigation have been published and other work is in process. It is hoped that the end result will be a comprehensive knowledge of the important strength properties of all of the rocks in the entire region."
