Craigmont Mines Limited mine 50,000 tons of ore and waste per day from the open pit at Merritt, British Columbia. An electric-powered "down-the-hole" drill, a diesel-powered rotary drill and two electric-powered rotary drills have been used. All primary drilling, as a result of cost and operating experience, is now performed with two electric-powered rotary drills. Trials with various loading techniques have increased the amount of AN-FO and decreased the amount of commercially prepared slurries used for primary blasting. Approximately 95 per cent of the primary blasting is accomplished with AN -FO, mixed at the hole. Introduction THE Craigmont mine is located near the village of Merritt, B.C., 240 miles northeast of Vancouver. The concentrator has been in production since September of 1961. Craigmont is a combined open-pit and underground operation. To date, slightly more than 95 per cent of the mill feed has been mined from the open pit. As underground development proceeds, the ore requirements from the open pit will decrease. The average milling rate from September, 1961, to April, 1964, was approximately 4,900 tons per day.

Synthesis of TiC /A1203 Composite from TiO2, Al and graphite using combustion technique has been investigated at different initial temperatures; room, 400 and 600 °C. The effect of initial temperature on the composition of the product, wave velocity and combustion temperature of the reaction was studied. The measured combustion temperature and wave velocity were increased with increasing the initial temperature of the combustion reaction. The maximum wave velocity obtained was 5.9mms-1 when conducting the combustion reaction at initial temperature of 600 °C. Oxidation resistance of the obtained composite was also studied at the temperature range 300-800 °C. No oxidation is detected before 400 °C while it takes place effectively at 700 °C forming different titanium oxides. Wave velocity measurements method was used to calculate the activation energy of the reaction between the starting materials. It was found to be 316.34 kJ mol 1 at the temperature range that was studied.

Introduction The Author As the pail of smoke and wartime destruction gradually rises from the surface of the earth, from all countries, statesmen assemble to discuss and prepare pacts and treaties which are designed to, once more, bring people of all nations to understand each other and live in harmony. Scientists and engineers throughout the world are also undergoing a drastic reconversion in their ideas and objectives. No longer do they think only in terms of destruction and twist their brains to develop more devastating weapons or to surpass production records of war machinery. They have turned their eyes and ambitions to more pleasant tasks and are taking stock of wartime developments in materials, fabricating procedures, and equipment, many of which had been carefully shrouded with a veil of secrecy, and are applying their new knowledge to the fabrication or improvement of the tools of peace. The next few years will see the gradual elimination of scores of substitutes and makeshifts, expedients which the constantly changing law of supply and demand' under wartime stress necessitated. The universal search for satisfactory substitutes, however, has resulted in a general awakening of plant engineers to the possibilities of materials with which they were relatively inexperienced, with the result that, in many instances, what was considered a substitution at the outset turned out to be more satisfactory than the original material, and, in reality, can be considered a worthwhile development. Not only have materials been explored, but existing fabricating processes have been reviewed, and others, built around the properties and characteristics of new materials, created.

Many factors affect the forge ability of steels. One of the major factors is chemical composition.' This article discusses the individual effects of alloying elements and the effect of the resultant modification of microstructure onforgeability. INTRODUCTION T HE use of alloy steels is expanding considerably and the fabrication procedures for such alloys are becoming more complex. An attempt is made in this article to describe the effect of alloying elements on the hot-workability of steels. Most of the data reported here are taken from the studies of Ihrig, Clark and others (Refs. 1-4). Chemical composition is not the only controlling factor. Grain size and surface condition of the material, forging temperature, and speed of deformation are also important. Certain conclusions can be drawn regarding the effect of various alloying elements on the hot-work-ability of forging stock. The results of hot-twist tests are considered useful in this connection as the number of twists to failure has been taken as the level of forgeability at a particular temperature. Oxygen requirement during acidic pressure oxidation of sulphide concentrates can he as high as 800 kg/(m3.h) in the first compartment of an autoclave when the total oxidation residence time is shortened to 30 minutes. To achieve such a high oxygen transfer rate while maintaining satisfactory oxygen utilization, a pilot plant campaign was launched at the Placer Dome Research Centre in 1998 to measure the oxygen mass transfer coefficient in a 5 m3 pressure vessel at a total pressure close to 500 psig with a 30 HP gassing agitator. Maximum oxygen flowrate to the pressure vessel was designed at 3 600 kg/h. In this paper, a great deal of information is provided on the gassing agitator, pressure vessel. measurement procedure and results. Without oxygen sparging, the oxygen mass transfer coefficient is 2 600 h-1 with a mixing power input of 5.0 kW/m3 in solution. With oxygen sparging, the oxygen mass transfer coefficient increases to 3 500 h-1 with a mixing power input of 4.0 kW/m3 in solution.

The effect of various percentages of cold-working and recrystallization on the microstructure and hardness of commercially-pure aluminum plate, has been studied. The 'A critical deformation for the aluminum, has been determined. Experimentation involved cold rolling and recrystallization processes followed by quantitative metallographic practice and the hardness measurements. The raw material chosen was a plate of commercial aluminum which was cold rolled to different percentage of cold-work and then recrystallized by heat treatment at 150°C. The critical deformation percentage of aluminum was computed to be around 30% of cold-worked.

Of the many organic impurities present in Bayer liquor, sodium oxalate is known to have one of the most detrimental effects on the Bayer process. Because of its limited solubility, it will co-precipitate with gibbsite during the precipitation stage which results in many operational challenges for the refinery. Despite the importance of this phenomenon, the interaction mechanism between gibbsite and sodium oxalate is not well understood. In this study, the growth of sodium oxalate on three main morphologies (random agglomerates, prims and hexagons) of water-washed and caustic-washed gibbsite was observed under synthetic Bayer conditions using in situ optical microscopy. After a short induction period, oxalate started to nucleate on gibbsite crystals, and grew with a needle-shaped morphology which eventually developed into oxalate bundles. In addition, the results indicated that caustic washing was able to partly decompose gibbsite crystals and thus make the gibbsite surface rougher, which provides more potential sites for oxalate nucleation and growth. The growth rate of oxalate crystals on the basal (001) face of water-washed gibbsite was 1.33 µm/min determined by the time-lapse imaging of in situ optical microscope.

"The design, construction and operation of tailings dams is rapidly becoming a major consideration for most new mining developments, as well as for many existing operations. In North America, under pressure from public opinion, various government agencies have in recent years enacted legislation covering the design, construction and operation of tailings dams. In British Columbia, comprehensive legislation has been passed during the past year (1971). All of these new regulations may be placed into two broad categories: regulations concerning the safety of the dam and appurtenant structures, and regulations concerning the prevention of pollution. Both types of regulation affect the design of the tailings dam facilities. Consequently, they must be considered jointly by the designer. A good tailings dam design must satisfy the basic requirements of safety, pollution control, storage capacity and economy. To achieve this, 'the design must be based on a thorough understanding of both the geotechnical problems involved and the requirements of the mining development. Obviously, this requires close cooperation between the designing geotechnical engineers and the mining operators. This paper outlines the major engineering factors that should be considered in the investigation, design, construct ion and operation of tailings dams. Basic methods of tailings dam construction are reviewed and the advantages and disadvantages of each briefly discussed. Comparisons are made between the design and construction of conventional water supply dams and tailings dams. Examples are presented of some of the problems that may arise during construction and operation of a tailings dam. The paper also explains the need for basic instrumentation of tailings dams and for carrying out simple field tests and measurements during construction and operation. Of prime importance is the downstream monitoring of surface and subsurface seepage flows. These observations are invaluable where contamination of surface and/or subsurface water may become a contentious issue at some future date. Each tailings dam design must be based on a study of the particular requirements of that project. To make a proper evaluation, adequate data must be available concerning a large number of items•, including such things as: topography, hydrology, geology, subsoil properties, seismicity, government regulations, fineness of mill grind, mill water balance, availability of suitable construction materials, volume of water to be stored behind starter dam, downstream development or liability, and many others. The large number of variables involved in such an evaluation often result in the designer considering two or more alternative designs. Selection of the final design, which is usually based on detailed cost analyses of the alternatives, must be made in close consultation with the owner."

"To characterize noise and vibration sources of different types of mining equipment used in underground mining, the authors performed a study in eight Quebec mines on 28 pieces of equipment. This paper presents the procedure followed to select the equipment to be evaluated, and the low-cost acquisition system developed to perform multichannel time-domain data acquisition in harsh environments. It also presents the results obtained for the noise level produced by the equipment and for handarm and whole-body vibration exposures.RÉSUMÉ Dans le but de caractériser les sources de bruits et de vibrations de divers équipements miniers utilisés sous terre, les auteurs ont étudié 28 équipements dans huit mines du Québec. L’article présente la procédure suivie pour choisir les équipements à évaluer ainsi qu’un système multicanal à faible coût développé pour acquérir des données dans des environnements difficiles. A thermodynamic model has been developed for calculating phase equilibria and other properties of multicomponent electrolyte systems. The model has been designed to reproduce the properties of both aqueous and mixed-solvent electrolyte systems ranging from infinite dilution to solid saturation or pure solute limit. The model incorporates formulations for the excess Gibbs energy and standard-state properties coupled with an algorithm for detailed speciation calculations. The excess Gibbs energy model consists of a long-range interaction contribution represented by the Pitzer-Debye-Hiickel expression, a second virial coefficient-type term for specific ionic interactions and a short-range interaction term expressed by the UNIQUAC equation. The accuracy of the model has been demonstrated for common acids and bases and for multicomponent systems containing aluminum species in various environments.

"Totten Mine return air raise was designed with two parallel fans equipped with silencers to reduce the noise emitted from the outlets into the environment. As development and production of the mine progressed through the past years, the silencer system needed to be upgraded, and additional maintenance strategies have been necessary to meet the regulatory noise limits enforced by the province of Ontario. The current mine plan will require the fans to reach the upper limit of their capacity by Q1 2019. To achieve this operational target, additional silencing capability has been required and Totten Mine has explored alternatives to further extend the noise silencing capacity available considering the current constraints at the mine site. The alternatives included a new silencer baffle design and a new layout that have allowed doubling the length of the silencer system. Using acoustic measurement data collected on several occasions, this paper presents and discusses the performance of the various silencing systems which have been installed on the return air fans at Totten Mine.INTRODUCTION Vale Canada Limited’s Totten Mine is a base metal, underground mine extracting nickel and copper, situated in the Sudbury Basin of Ontario. The mine initiated operations at the end of 2013, and is equipped with two main return air fans and two main fresh air fans located on surface. Both fresh air and return air fans are set in a parallel arrangement to operate as integrated units and are equipped with variable frequency drives (VFDs) to allow for the remote modification of their operating set point, usually between 600 to 880 rpm, depending on the mine’s requirements. The main return air raise (RAR) fans are also equipped with dissipative baffle silencers to attenuate the noise emitted to the environment. Approximately four years ago, acoustical measurements conducted to verify compliance with the applicable regulatory criteria, and respond to noise concerns from neighboring residents, concluded that the sound emissions of the main return air raise exceeded the noise design parameters. The acoustic tones of the fans were audible offsite, at a residential location, approximately 9 km northeast of the mine site. The elevated sound levels and offsite audibility was due to degradation of the original discharge silencers from moisture and particulate being drawn from underground workings and passing through the silencer baffles. The audibility was also due to an outlet directivity pattern which directed noise towards the residential location."

In 2010 Newmont made the decision to purchase a 42 foot (ft) Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mill from Metso and a 28 Mega-Watt (MW) Gearless Mill Drive (GMD) from ABB for the Conga Project in Peru. The test and study work showed that a single line 42 ft SAG mill circuit gave the most favorable project economics in comparison to an equivalently powered single line 40 ft SAG mill circuit. This paper does not address the process design or the project economics, but instead focuses on the key aspects of the SAG mill design, GMD design and the associated component manufacturing. This paper also addresses, where applicable, the potential reliability differences between the initially proposed 40 ft SAG mill and the finally accepted 42 ft SAG mill.

"The concept of large single line grinding circuits provides a valid answer in project feasibility studies by reducing capital investment requirements compared to parallel lines for the same plant throughput rates. The benefits of this concept are reflected as well on the operational aspects, in terms of higher and greater process stability, and reduced operational costs mainly due to the associated lower maintenance expenditures. However, concerns exist in the minerals industry on whether large single line grinding could reduce the overall concentrator plant availability. The mechanical design and integrity, the mill and gearless mill drive integration, as well as assets management aspects of this type of equipment are the key to guarantee successful availability records. Together with an overview of the added value provided by large single line grinding circuits, this paper focuses on risk mitigation strategies during mill and gearless mill drive integration, as well as on the design of the equipment itself, for the key aspects which could put at risk the operations availability.INTRODUCTIONDespite a large long term demand for commodities, the mining industry has never faced complex challenges as it is doing today. Decreasing high-quality and accessible deposits, declining ore grades in existing mines, shortages of electrical energy (e.g. in Chile) and an aging workforce are the most significant among the megatrends affecting our industry. In addition to this, flat underlying commodity prices and high price volatility are currently posing strong requirements to miners when entering into the process of approving investments.Nowadays to get projects financially approved (optimizations, expansions, new plants), capital expenditure has to be reduced, as observed up to 30% compared to the last decade, and at the same time the plant design has to be such to demonstrate that operating costs will also be significantly lower than in the past.When it comes to the concentrator plant, the concept of large single line grinding circuits provides a valid answer in project feasibility studies by significantly reducing the capital investment requirements compared to parallel lines for the same plant throughput rates. "We combined stepwise regression and constrained regression statistical method to obtain the best boundary conditions for the calculation of in-situ stress field in Wushaoling tunnel using finite element method. Our numerical results reveal that: the main geologic factors contributing to the initial background stress are gravity and tectonics; the principal stress values would drop in fault zones; the angle between the maximal horizontal stress and the axis of Wushaoling tunnel is acute; Wushaoling tunnel tends to become stable when this tunnel has 2:1 ratio of the height to its width; the possibility of rock-burst exists under high stress.INTRODUCTIONStress state of engineering region is an important factor affecting the stability of project. Geological disasters in the project area are closely related to their stress environment. Wushaoling tunnel which is 20,050 meters long, lying along Lanzhou-Wuwei segment of Lan-Xin Railway in China, is the key project of Lan-Wu double-track railway. The region surrounding this tunnel is under a high stress environment. Accurate identification of the stress environment of the engineering area and the interaction between geomaterials and geotechnical engineering construction holds significant scientific and practical value for engineering design, construction, and operation.Many scholars explored and discussed the present-day tectonic stress through investigations of tectonic evolution history (Ding, & Lu, 1986), crustal deformation (Zoback, 1992), focal mechanisms (Yang et al., 2003, Xie, Cui, & Zhao, 2004), and so forth. However, the above methods would only provide the approximate direction of the principal stress in a broad region, and could not give the absolute stress values. In-situ stress measurement is one of the primary means to directly gauge the current crustal stress. However, in-situ stress measurement can only be applied in small number limited by measurement conditions."

"The Copper Canyon property is located in the Galore Creek area of northwestern British Columbia. Porphyry copper-gold mineralization on the property is notable for its high gold content and close spatial relationship with a distinctive suite of high level syenitic and monzonitic intrusions, and pseudoleucite-bearing volcanic country rocks. The style of alteration and mineralization is similar in many respects to the nearby Galore Creek deposits.The current geological resource of 32.4 million tonnes grading 0.75% Cu, 1.17 g/ t Au and 17.1 g/t Ag is insufficient to support a mining operation, but definition of additional reserves combined with improved transportation infrastructure in the region may change this in the future. The climate, topography and proximity to an active glacier indicate that the most likely production scenario is an underground bulk mining operation, with the ore being milled offsite.IntroductionThe property is located at 57°07' North latitude, 131 °21' West longitude, on NTS sheet 104G/ 3W, approximately 160 km northwest of Stewart and 90 km south of Telegraph Creek (Fig. 1). The Galore Creek camp and airstrip are located 6 km to the west. Current access to the property is via helicopter either from Galore Creek, or from the Bronson Creek airstrip 32 km to the south-southeast.The deposit occurs within the Boundary Ranges of the Coast Mountains, on the north side of the east fork of Galore Creek, which flows northerly into the Scud River and thence westerly to the Stikine River.Topography is rugged. In the deposit area, elevations range from 1130 m to 1750 m. Valley glaciers and permanent snow and ice fields are characteristic of the region at these elevations, and at its southern limit, mineralization is truncated by the East Fork Glacier.The property is entirely above the treeline, and except for areas of moraine cover and talus slopes, outcrop is abundant."

We studied theeffect of anode substrates such as pure lead (Pb), lead antimony (Pb-Sb), and lead-silver (Pb-Ag) on the structural and electrochemical properties of electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD). X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and chemical analyses were used to determine the structural and chemical characteristics of the EMD samples. The charge-discharge profile was studied in 9 M KOH using a galvanostatic charge-discharge unit. In all the substrates the current efficiencies were more than 99% except with Pb-Sb where it was 90%. Results revealed the nature of the substrate strongly affected the morphology of the deposited material which in turn affected the electrochemical properties of the EMD samples. XRD analyses revealed that the nature of the anode did not affect the crystal structure of the deposited EMD and all the samples were predominantly ?-MnO2, which is electrochemically active for energy storage applications. The EMD deposited on lead substrate showed superior discharge capacity of 245 mAhg-1 when compared with other substrates.

It is difficult co know how to deal with this subject before a group having such mixed interests. The mining man is not coo concerned with the problems of alloy research. The engineer is more interested in properties of materials than how these properties can be achieved. The business man feels that scientific history and prognostication are not for him, predicting trends or possible developments in the economic field being a more than sufficient occupation. Yet the application of physical metallurgy research to industry is of importance to miner, engineer, and business man, for only through such application can the continuing existence of industries manufacturing or consuming metals be assured. History shows that hard work does not guarantee industrial survival. For instance, the Bessemer method of steel making superseded puddling operations; it, in its turn, has been largely displaced by open-hearth processing; later, steels made in electric-arc furnaces displaced open-hearth products in the quality field; and now, very specialized steels are being made in high-frequency rather than in arc furnaces. It is apparent then, if industry is co remain healthy, complacency must give way co imaginative planning, based on a thorough knowledge of production technique, a knowledge supplied by efficient research.

"Rock failure process is generally recorded or measured using conventional sensors like strain gauges, seismic, micro-seismic, acoustic, electromagnetic and other techniques. The above sensors are either to be pasted on the surface of the rock sample or placed very near to it to capture the response of the sample with the increment of load. This requires precise tools to cut or polish the locations where sensors are to be placed. Moreover, deformation or acoustic or micro-seismic activities are recorded only at the locations where sensors are pasted.Recent development in Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique has shown promise to measure deformation / strain at every location of the surface of a sample. In DIC, two images (reference and deformed) are taken within a small time interval of the same object are compared to estimate the change in reflectance as a function of displacement, velocity or rate of strain at each pixel while the object is undergoing through a loading process. In this study, extended digital image correlation (X-DIC) technique has been implemented using 4-noded quadrilateral elements with a discontinuity surface in the deformed image. The continuous and enriched displacements are estimated at each node.The X-DIC method is verified using numerically generated images. The study has been further extended to evaluate the performance of X-DIC method on deformation analysis of experimental samples under uni-axial loading condition. The results of this study show that X-DIC method is an effective tool for determination of displacements of the entire surface of a rock sample having a discrete crack or discontinuity in a non-contact manner. This method demonstrates the applicability to investigate rock failure mechanism for the entire sample in a laboratory set up as well as monitoring of pillar failure mechanism in underground mines."

Geotechnical monitoring is a key element of the successful management of a block cave mine. The interrelationships between production and various monitoring datasets are often not realized due to a lack of data integration and appropriate 3D visualization. Timely delivery of information to ensure best cave management practices is only possible with an integrated cave management system. At Rio Tinto, a state-of-the-art cave management system (CaveCAD) has been designed and developed in cooperation with Mira Geoscience to integrate and analyze vast datasets and report this as instructive information regarding the current \u201cstatus\u201d of the cave.

"1N 1951, the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, as part of a programme of modernization in their coal mining operations at Sydney Mines and Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, undertook the development of two large cross-measure tunnels, which were to be used for the purpose of raising the coal from the underground workings by conveyor belts direct to wash plants located on the surface.These tunnels were to reach from the surface to central loading points underground located at a depth of 600 and 900 feet, respectively. They were to be driven on a pitching gradient of 11 degrees to the horizontal, and they were to reach a length of 3,600 feet in the Sydney Mines area and 10,000 feet in the Glace Bay area.The longer tunnel, 19 feet in diameter, was driven a distance of 1,500 feet and, for domestic reasons, bas not yet been •completed. The other tunnel, in the Sydney Mines area, 18 feet in diameter, is steel supported and concreted throughout its entire length. This tunnel has been completed and will be in operation at an early date.The development of this particutar tunnel posed an additional problem, as the rock through which it had to pass was considered to be water-bearing. In the sinking of Princess Colliery shafts in 1866, a great deal of water had been encountered, and it had been necessary, while sinking, to line the shaft with cast-iron tubbing through the water-bearing strata. The shaft had to be lined for a depth of 300 feet at the upper end. It was anticipated that we would meet with difficulty in driving the tunnel through this strata."
