The authors discuss the application of drum and friction hoists under modern conditions and give four examples of friction hoists proposed for various applications. The paper concludes with a summary of the advantages and limitations of friction hoists relative to drum hoists. Introduction T H~ introduction of the multiple-rope friction hoist m the late 1940's has complicated the se-lection of the right hoist for a given job. Once such considerations as rope safety factor, drum to rope ratio, hoisting distance, tons per hour and/or service duty have been decided upon, the selection of a drum hoist is relatively simple. We now ask our-selves "which hoist -drum or friction? (See Figure 1 and Figure 2). When a friction hoist is a possibility we are immediately concerned with how many ropes to use, whether to hoist balanced or counter-balanced, whether a friction hoist will be flexible enough for the application and, of course, what the relative costs will be.

A process utilizing ozone for the precipitation of cobalt from nickel sulphate liquors containing ammonium sulphate has been developed. Best results were obtained using nickel carbonate to maintain solution pH at 5.0 to 5.5. Work was performed both in column and stirred-tank reactors. Variables studied included neutralizer type and concentration, NH4+ concentration, temperature, Ni++ and Co++ concentration, per cent O3 in the O2 carrier gas, O3 input rate and agitation. The over-all rate of cobalt rejection increased sharply with increasing agitation and ozone concentration in the gas phase, reflecting relatively slow transfer of ozone from the gas to the liquid phase.

The orebodies at Copper Mounta1n lie along and within a few hundred feet of the contact of an intrusive stock of gabbro with a series of bedded volcanic rocks of the Nicola formation. These. orebodies are all entirely within the volcanic series but in many cases the centre line of the orebody at depth is directly under the gabbro contact at the surface, due to a slight overhang of the gabbro. The gabbro and volcanic rocks are cut by a number of faults and fault zones which did not materially affect early mining operations, but, as undeground openings increased in size, the faults became more important factors in determining mining methods and procedure. Caving methods were adopted to take advantage of ground weakness in fault zones, and the effect of ground subsidence which resulted from the division of the ground 1nto large, independent blocks by faulting had to be considered in planning the sequence of mining of certain ore blocks. The faults have been divided into two classes: the longitudinal system and the cross faults, or 'breaks' as they are termed locally. In addition to the two classes of faults, the zones of parallel ore fracture also control mining procedure, but to a lesser degree, in regard to caving or ground subsidence. A third structural feature which influences mining procedure is the mine dyke system. The longitudinal or main fault system roughly parallels the gab? bro contact and is made up of a number of branches and auxiliary fractures. The main fault itself is essentially vertical, but there are a number of branches and fractures on each side of it which, though parallel m strike, may dip as flat as 50 degrees toward or away from the main fault. The full width of the main fault system has not been determined, but it is known to extend beyond the zone of mine workings. A marked schistosity follows the main fault and both schistosity and chloritic alteration have been noticed along the secondary faults of this system. Several prominent orebodies lie along the main fault and its branches. The influence of the main fault system on mining is probably related more to subsidence than to actual cavi.ng, although it is effective in both.

"Installation of a 3.6 km long raw coal conveyor in the Balmer open pit was undertaken to improve over-all haulage efficiency. This paper covers the rationale behind this project, system design and construction aspects and initial operating experiences. The majority of the construction work was performed by our own personnel. Where feasible, used equipment was installed to reduce capital cost and facilitate a tight construction schedule.BackgroundWestar Mining Ltd's Balmer Mine is located in the British Columbia Rockies, just outside of the town of Sparwood in the southeastern corner of British Columbia. The open pit mine, which has been in operation since 1969, currently produces about 6 million clean tonnes of coal per year, mostly for the metallurgical coal export market. Run-of-mine coal tonnages total between 9 and 9.5 million annually and waste removal volumes exceed 30 million bank cubic metres.The mine is a truck/shovel operation; loading equipment includes nine electric shovels, five front-end loaders and a hydraulic backhoe. The truck fleet consists of 40 units of 154-tonne, 181-tonne and 315-tonne capacity. The newer 154-tonne trucks are used for coal haulage for which they have been equipped , with tailgates to maximize their coal carrying capacity."

"The results of tests carried out on a 3-in. hydrocyclone have shown the linear relationships that exist between: (1) the flow-rate of water in the feed to and the overflow product from the cyclone; (2) the flow-rate of solids in the feed to and the underflow product from the cyclone. The underflow size distribution of an operation has been found to be linear and its usefulness in evaluating particle distribution in the cyclone has been discussed. Effects of design and operating variables on the above relationships have been discussed. The performance of this 3-in. hydrocyclone has been compared with that of a 20-in. cyclone, the results for which are available in the literature."

"The new smelting process commenced operation in 1978. The pelletizing and sinter plants were replaced with slurry-fed roasters and the blast furnaces with electric furnaces. The existing converter aisle and matte handling facilities remained unchanged.Process DescriptionNickel-copper concentrate is partially roasted in two slurry-fed fluid bed roasters. After gas cleaning, the sulphur dioxide gas is transferred to the acid plant. The roaster product is conveyed to two electric furnaces for smelting to produce a waste slag and furnace matte. The slag goes to the disposal area and furnace matte containing the metal values is processed in the converters for further removal of iron and sulphur.The final matte containing about 75 per cent metal values is shipped to the refinery in Norway.The commercial smelter was designed for 2135 tonnes per day of concentrate, with an availability of 85% . Roasters and electric furnaces were sized at 117 per cent of design, or 1250 tonnes per day on each of two lines. As an alternative to heavy water cooling, reactors cooled by organic liquids are being actively developed in Canada under the sponsorship of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. One of the areas in which development has been required is that of core materials. The factors affecting the selection of fuel canning and coolant tube materials are discussed. It is shown that S.A.P. is a potentially attractive material for these applications. The fabrication of fuel sheathing is discussed. Difficulties met due to large inclusions and blistering due to high hydrogen contents have been overcome by magnetic separation and vacuum sintering of the powders. High-quality tubes can now be produced by extrusion to finished size. A study has been made of the mechanical properties of fuel-sheathing tubes and bar stock. The stress rupture properties of the tubes subjected to uniaxial and biaxial stress have been determined. The biaxial stress tests were performed by internal pressurization. "The principles involved in the use and application of mathematical models as an aid to the development of advanced process control computer systems are described briefly. This is followed by a brief survey of known models of this kind for the simulation of mining industry processes.The main part of the paper describes a dynamic model of the flotation process developed by Canadian General Electric. Using flotation rate constants for each species of mineral and gangue, the model provides a numerical solution of the differential equations describing cell behaviour. The cell mode] is used repeatedly as a subroutine in the •over-all-plant model. THE copper-nickel sulfide ore deposits of the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited contain the minerals pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. In the extraction of the nickel, copper, and iron, much of the processing involves oxidation of the metals as well as sulfur. Roasting plays a predominant role at several stages in the operations which prepare the constituent metals for refining. Copper, nickel and iron concentrates of various grades, ranging from low-grade nickeliferous pyrrhotite to high-grade nickel sulfide, must be partially or completely oxidized. Figure 1 shows the main points at which roasting is conducted at INCO. Roasting experience at INCO dates back to the time when lump ore was partially roasted in heaps. It has progressed through single hearth roasters, sinter machines, multiple-hearth roasters, flash roasters, and more recently has centered on the development and utilization of fluid bed roasters. "Résumé- Le gîte de Pb-Zn de Gays River s'accompagne d'anomalies des propriétés de la matière organique (MO) et des assemblages de minéraux d'argile (AMA). L'association entre la minéralisation, la distribution de la réflectance de la MO et des AMA suggère que ces traceurs peuvent servir à l'exploration des sulfures de métaux de base dans cette région.A l'emplacement du gîte, la réflectance varie considérablement (0,80% à 1,88%), pouvant même afficher une baisse avec l'enfouissement, ce qui est interprété comme une altération chimique de la MO. Les valeurs les plus élevées s'accompagnent localement de quelques textures en mosaïque et délimitent une anomalie thermique au centre sud de la région. Parmi les minéraux des argiles identifiés, l'illite et la chlorite sont terrigènes alors que la smectite, la kaolinite et la corrensite sont authigènes et, à l'instar de l'altération de la MO, résultent des nouveaux équilibres chimiques créés suite à la précipitation des sulfures.Abstract- The Gays River Pb-Zn ore deposit is associated with anomalies defined from the characters of the organic matter (OM) and from the clay minerals assemblages. The relationships be­ tween these anomalies and the mineralization at the mine suggest that these parameters can be used as new guides for the exploration for base-metal sulfides in this area.The vitrinite reflectance (RJ shows a wide range of values (0.8% to 1.88%) and exhibits an anomalous suppressive effect with depth of burial at the mine site, suggesting a chemical alteration of the OM. The highest R, values are associated with mosaic textures and outline a thermal anomaly at the south-center of the studied area. Among the identified clay minerals, illite and chlorite are terrigenous, whereas smectite, kaolinite and corrensite are authigenous and, like the alteration of the OM, are due to the new chemical equilibria resulting from the precipitation of the sulfides."

The composition of phosphate rocks, mainly used in manufacturing fertilizers, varies among deposits; therefore, phosphate rocks from different sources are expected to behave differently in acidulation processes. This paper examines the effect of preconcentration of phosphate ore from El-Sebaiya East, Egypt, using flotation on uranium leaching. A high-grade ore sample (27.3% P2O5, 168 mg/kg U) supplied by the Al-Nasr Mining Company, was subjected to reverse single-stage flotation to separate carbonate from the phosphate sample. Subsequently, P2O5 and U concentrations were 32.2% (92.1% recovery) and 225 mg/kg, respectively. After the leach process, the U concentration in the liquor was 319 mg/L.

Abstract A simplified method of fatigue testing full-dimension, as-rolled, non-machined, mining drill rods is very desirable to the mining and steel industries in the classification of steels available on the market, through the evaluation of their fatigue limits and endurance strength. In this paper one such simplified method is presented and analysed. The preliminary results show many advantages of this method, such as simplicity and constancy of loading. The type of loading applied more or less simulates the working conditions of the outside fibres of the mining drill rods. Additional advantages of this method are the possibility of testing under dry and wet conditions, its quietness, and its ease of operation. Specially designed adaptors and specially applied techniques of fixing and preparation of samples make possible the breaking of a quarter-octagon hollow drill rod in a free length of uniform section in a rotating beam machine. At first glance this seems to be difficult to achieve. In the first preliminary test three different lots of steel were used. S-N curves under dry conditions were determined. These curves permit of the classification of the drill rods on the basis of the fatigue limit and endurance strength of the outside fibres of the metal, which is dependent to a greater or lesser extent on the effect of surface decarburization, surface imperfections, and special surface treatments. The average slope of the S.N curve in the damaging zone, and the fatigue limit in equal tension-compression rotating bending, were determined for SAE 1080, chromium-molybdenum and nickel-chromium-molybdenum mining drill rods. INTRODUCTION The fatigue limit and the endurance strength of mining drill rod steels are of interest to both the mining and the steel industries. These industries are greatly interested in lowering the cost of mining by reducing the consumption of these steels per ton of ore exploited.

"Fourteen companies (Appendix) representing senior mining organizations in Canada were canvassed in order to assess: (1) the current usage and trends, and (2) the usefulness of computer applications in ore reserve estimation and grade control. The results of the questionnaire suggest that:• computers are unsurprisingly, predominant in the mining industry for calculating reserves and performing grade control;• time and cost savings are realized;• computer-based approaches are applicable to underground situations;• geological information is incorporated to the computerization process; and• computer usage does not hinder the collaboration of geologist and mining engineer.A clear need is identified for case histories comparing computer-calculated ore reserves and actual production data.IntroductionAmong the management and technical staff of some mining companies there is a perception that the application of computer based technology for the estimation of ore reserves and grade control, has as many drawbacks as benefits. Some of the objections raised against the utilization of computers for ore reserve estimation are that:• computer-based reserve models work for large open pit mines but not for underground situations;• computer-generated reserves ignore the geologist's knowledge base; they are strictly a number crunching exercise; and• the use of computers for ore reserves hinders collaboration between the geologist and mining engineer.In order to determine (I) the extent of current computer usage and future trends and (2) whether the objections noted above are borne out by experience, a number of senior Canadian mining companies were canvassed.The respondents were asked to provide:• an assessment of the importance of the computer in the ore reserve estimation and grade control process;• the level of involvement of individuals and staff groups with computer-based ore reserve estimation;• the advantages perceived and realized from the utilization of computer-based ore reserve approaches;• the current and future human resources requirements for the evaluation, implementation, maintenance and development of computer-based ore reserve systems;• the hardware and software resources presently used and planned; and• the developments needed to increase the use and acceptance of computer-based ore reserves."

EARLY in 1951, Falconbridge undertook a research program aimed at the development of a sulphate roasting process for the recovery of the non-ferrous rnetals from the nickeliferous pyrrhotite fraction of Falconbridge ore, in order to reduce the tonnage of iron entering the srnelter. Such a method, it was hoped, would permit a high recovery of the nickel from pyrrhotite otherwise entering the smelter feed, thus not only raising the grade of the latter and reducing its iron content, but also providing an iron oxide residue useful as a source of by-product iron ore. At an early stage in the exploratory laboratory test work it was found that the degree to which the nickel could be solubilized by the sulphating roasting treatment was limited by particle size and the ex-tent to which the pyrrhotite concentrates were freed of the nickel occurring as physically separable pentlandite, a mineral relatively difficult to roast. "Smelting of copper-gold ore from nearby Rossland mines started at Trail in the 1890s. As ore from the Rossland mines became exhausted, lead smelting offhand-sorted galena orefrom other British Columbia mines was initiated. With the development of flotation technology for the separation of lead, zinc, and iron sulphides in the first two decades of this century, the large Sullivan orebody at Kimberley, British Columbia, became the foundation for the growth of a major zinc and lead smelter at Trail. Lead smelting began in 1901, electrolytic zinc in 1916, and by 1984, the Trail metallurgical complex had produced 10 million tons of each metal. Its present capacity is 270000 tonnes per year of zinc and 110 000 tonnes/year of lead.This paper reviews the history of technological changes in the Trail production plants, emphasizing the zinc plant modernization program started in the 1970s, and also the planned introduction of the QSL oxygen lead smelting process in the late 1980s. Lead modernization will increase production capacity to a maximum of 160000 tonnes per year.IntroductionCopper-gold ore was discovered at Rossland, British Columbia, in the year 1890, starting a mining industry that was to last over three decade s. Selected ore was at first transported at high cost to distant U.S. smelters, so there naturally followed a decision to construct a small copper smelter to process the local ore to matte. It was built in 1896 at the mouth of Trail Creek on the Columbia River, about 10 km from Rossland. This little smelter was to develop and diversify in the next 90 years into the world's largest lead-zinc produce.The mining boom that occurred in the northwestern United States and southeastern British Columbia in the period of 1890 to 1910 saw the brief operation of many small local smelters. The only one to survive was the smelter at Trail. The circumstances that permitted its continued life and subsequent growth, form a fascinating history of business deals, litigation, and steady technical progress.Early investment in local railway transportation and options by F.A. Heinze, the smelter' s founder, attracted the attention of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, which purchased Heinze' s assets in 1898. This provided the capital base for survival and growth of the smelter, which remained and prospered under the Canadian Pacific umbrella for almost ninety years. It was registered as the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited in 1906; in 1966, this name was shortened to Cominco Ltd."

THE EXCUSE for producing still another paper dealing with the oilfields of the Middle East is the overwhelming importance of this area to everyone, both inside and out of the oil industry. Figure 1 shows the area defined as the Middle East for the purpose of this paper. No description of what constitutes the Middle East is generally acceptable to everyone and, in fact, in many parts of the world it is referred to as "Western Asia". At the time ?the writer went to work as a geologist in the Middle East -this was in 1926 -there were just three known oilfields, namely, Hurghada in Egypt, Naft Khaneh in the Transferred Territories of Iraq, and Masjid-i-Sulai-man in Persia. Their combined producing rate at that time was around 100,000 barrels per day. Toda y, just thirty years later, some forty-two fields have been proven to exist, and a recent discovery in Syria -if commercial -may add one more to the list. Producing rates at the end of last year ( 1956) were approaching four million barrels per day. This sizable figure re presents nearly 23 per cent of the total Free World's production. What is more important still, something over 70 per cent of the Free World's proven oil reserves are known to exist in the subsoil of the Middle East.

Copper metal is produced in large or small tonnages in almost all countries of the world—handling raw materials in the form of either as-mined or milled ores, custom concentrates, or other custom materials including scrap and recycled copper. The scale of operations and type of technologies used around the world varies widely. There is a certain concentration of both mining and smelter-refinery production as a total of ten countries produce some 80% of world mined copper, while ten countries—mostly different ones— produce about 80% of smelted and refined copper. As a result, international copper trade is significant. The present paper takes the reader on a virtual tour of the copper plants throughout the world with a focus on smelter facilities. Operations and technology employed at each plant visited are discussed including a brief historical sketch. Future trends identified during the world tour are also discussed. The present authors considered sufficient time was required for a thorough study tour and settled on eighty days—the same as that for the celebrated fictional story of world circumnavigation in the 1870s. INTRODUCTION The celebrated French writer Jules Verne published his book “Around the world in 80 days” in English in1873 and it is the story of Phileas Fogg and his French valet Passepartout circumnavigating the world in 80 days in the fall of 1872 on a £20,000 wager (equivalent to over 2 million pounds today) from the exclusive Reform club in London. This is an interesting period for copper as it started trading on the London metals Exchange in 1876 and the start of global copper production chains started to take off at this time with the rapidly increasing electrification of the world. The production chain includes mining, mineral processing, smelting, refining and fabrication. Since 1880 annual world copper production has increased by over 150 times from 154,000 tonnes in 1880 (nominally considered as smelted copper—essentially the only route at the time to marketable copper) to over 23 million tonnes today (including total refined copper of 19 million tonnes of smelted copper including scrap and 4 million tonnes by solvent extraction-electrowinning), in tandem with increased electricity usage, along with significant transportation usage and for manufactured products (Figure 1).
