In order to successfully produce columbium pyrochlore concentrates, St. Lawrence Columbium and Metals Corporation had to face two principal problems met in several new operations but possibly made more acute than usual owing to the newness of the project. 1.-The ore is particularly complex, as it is made up of an elaborate intermingling of carbonates and discontinuous ultra-alkaline rock bodies of various ages and types in which no less than seventy mineral have been re-ported. Obvious petrographic or structural controls are lacking. Ore boundaries have to be defined on the basis of assay results and the determination of several minerals which occur in trace amounts. 2.-The pyrochlore concentrates produced had to com-ply with a set of stringent specifications. This fact, combined with the low Cb205 content of the ore, necessitated the use of a beneficiation process that would have to operate at a concentration ratio greater than 100:1. A brief description of the mill circuit is given. Mill stability was obtained through extensive mineralogical study of the mill feed coupled with close geological and engineering control of the mining operations.

"Microseismic monitoring provides insight into the location and extent of rock-mass fracturing induced by cave mining, enabling interpretation of the cave profile and validation of predictive numerical models. Source location uncertainties can lead to misinterpretation of the inferred characteristics of the fracture network. One principal source of uncertainty is the velocity model used to invert the location algorithm. Large-scale 3D numerical models of modulus changes across a caved mass can represent such complexities in the location algorithms, allowing more accurate interpretation of the microseismic activity. A Northparkes mine case study applies this advanced approach to microseismic data interpretation.RÉSUMÉ Le suivi microsismique fournit des renseignements sur la localisation et l’étendue des fractures de la masse rocheuse induites par l’exploitation par blocs foudroyés; cela permet d’interpréter le profil de la chambre foudroyée et de valider les modèles prédictifs numériques. Les incertitudes quant à la localisation de la source peuvent conduire à des mésinterprétations des caractéristiques inférés du réseau de fractures. Une des principales sources d’incertitudes est le modèle de vitesse utilisé pour inverser l’algorithme de localisation. Des modèles numériques tridimensionnels à grande échelle des changements du module d’élasticité à travers une masse foudroyée peuvent représenter de telles complexités dans les algorithmes de localisation, permettant ainsi une interprétation plus juste de l’activité microsismique. THE Privateer mine consists of a group of mineral claims situated in the Zeballos area, on the west coast of Vancouver island, approximately 180 miles north of Victoria. Although Zeballos is a comparatively new mining camp, its transportation facilities can be considered exceptionally good. General freight and supplies are brought in by either C.P.R. or Frank Waterhouse steamers from either Victoria or Vancouver. Service by these boats varies from five to ten days and the trip from Victoria takes approximately two days. Passengers may use the C.P.R. boats, or, if speed is essential, they may fly, in which case they have the choice of two flying companies, namely, Canadian Air-ways, Limited, and Ginger Coote Airways. The average flight from Vancouver takes approximately two hours. Excellent unloading facilities are provided at the beach by a government dock for the steamers and a floating dock for aeroplanes. The mine, which is approximately five miles from the beach, is serviced by a fairly good gravel road, which has proved satisfactory for all haulage purposes. Zeballos has the reputation of having one of the heaviest rainfalls on the west coast, but as no accurate records have been kept, no comparisons can be made. H. C. Gunning, in his report, comments on the weather from 1929 to 1932, and one would judge that the practically continuous rainfall did not add to the pleasures of the field work. During the summer of 1938, the opposite condition prevailed and the area had exceptionally dry and pleasant weather. The snowfall is generally light at the lower elevations, but very heavy higher up. No extreme cold weather is encountered during the winter, which is generally short.

Abstract As part of the active development programme pursued by Dominion Magnesium Limited since 1945, a modern extrusion plant was erected and has been in operation for about twelve months. The only source of nigh purity magnesium in the world, Canadian metal is produced by metallurgical processes within the frame-work of the mining industry, which gives a different viewpoint to every phase of production from other world suppliers of commercial grade metal whose operations are based on chemical industries and techniques. The superior properties of corrosion resistance and grain refinement have aided a programme of standardization, reducing the number of alloys supplied in extruded form from seven to four as an aid to economic production. The first big step was the development of a general purpose alloy known as AZ?21x covering all decorative and medium stressed applications, which will supersede two older alloys. Sales approaching a million feet in this alloy show that it bids fair to become the 'mild steel' of the magnesium industry, its applications ranging from terrazzo floor strip to textile machinery and television mast components. In the high stressed field, metallurgical features preclude low-cost extrusion of the older high-strength alloys, but recent development of a magnesium alloy containing zirconium promises an easily workable metal. Hitherto produced by expensive chemical additions, research now shows that the alloy can be produced by metallurgical means, which may make this alloy available for a wide range of commercial applications. Thus the future development programme for extruded products in the form of tube, bars, shapes, and structural angles and channels may evolve two alloys to cover all applications for strengths up to 52,000 lb. per sq. in. Such standardization is the result of taking advantage of the physical and metallurgical properties of high-purity magnesium instead of accepting techniques based on metal produced by older processes.

"The 1980s have proven extremely difficult years for many resource-based organizations. Mining companies have learned how to weather the negative effects of inevitable economic cycles. However, with some notable exceptions, such as gold mining companies, the mining industry has faced a broader and deeper round of cutbacks than any experienced since the 1930s. Downsizing has been a major issue for many mining companies as they have faced the need for dramatic staffing cost reductions in the recent past.The continuing current rapid rate of change in technology and the marketplace, coupled with increasing merger and acquisition activity, will provide an on-going need for some companies to face major reorganization. This inevitably will involve down-sizing activity in some instances.Given this scenario, it is worth reviewing the industry's past experiences to identify approaches and techniques that could prove of value in handling a future staff downsizing challenge. This paper is based upon a downsizing consultant's experiences with the mining industry and other sectors, and highlights what appear to be key staff reduction planning and process issues.Planning for DownsizingA review of companies' downsizing activities of the last few years reveals four key activity stages which need to be addressed to ensure a successful transition. These stages are:1. organization planning;2. developing cost reduction strategies;3. implementing downsizing; and4. building for the future.A business situation that is severe enough to require drastic staff cuts typically affects all aspects of a company's operations. Most mining companies have reviewed cost efficiencies in many operational areas. However, these reviews often have been short term in focus . As a result, some companies have experienced multiple downsizing; each event a response to an immediate economic threat. This has sometimes resulted in an unstable organizational environment, with severe stresses on staff morale and productivity.In the long term it is more efficient and less stressful to the organization to adopt a more comprehensive and longer-term strategy. Especially in capital intensive mining operations, it makes sense to review all areas of business activity, not just staffing."

"The gently-dipping Devonian dolomite beds south of Great Slave lake in northern Canada are nearly every-where concealed by a cover of glacial drift and muskeg. Nevertheless, in 1898 or earlier, four small outcropping areas of dolomite, richly mineralized with lead and zinc sulphides, were discovered. Exploration work performed here up to the end of 1930, included intensive trenching and drilling of the showings, together with mapping and wide-spaced drilling in the surrounding region. This work proved that the discoveries are isolated pockets of mineralization much too small to be commercially valuable by themselves. No evidence of orebodies elsewhere was reported.Meanwhile, mapping by the G.S.C. in the Shield far to the east disclosed major Precambrian faults, some of which can be projected southwesterly (under a cover of Paleozoic sediments) to the vicinity of Pine Point. During the period from 1940 to 1947, consideration was given, by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company Ltd., to evidence of a theoretical possibility that, although apparently dormant in Paleozoic times, these faults may have provided a structural control and a source of ore-bearing solutions in some post-Devonian period. From this, it was postulated that the breaks might have created, in the overlying dolomite, a linear array of orebodies concealed by overburden but lying in a belt of considerable length and in a position predictable within practical limits. A program of drilling designed to test and exploit this specific concept was conducted from 1948 to 1955.he drilling within the new, theoretically-defined search area resulted in the discovery of many lead-zinc ore-bodies, none of which was exposed at the surface. Some of these are large and (as indicated by 1965 production records) very rich. They are situated 1 to several miles distant from, and apparently not connected to, the earlier-known surface discoveries. The drilling also disclosed that the ore, which consists of disseminated sphalerite and galena replacements together with colloform sphalerite and coarse galena cavity fillings, occurs mainly at certain stratigraphic horizons within a large, coarsely-recrystallized dolomite barrier reef. Considerable fracturing and folding was found. It has been suggested that reef development was influenced by post-Precambrian tectonic movements associated with the old faults in the basement complex. The ore may have been deposited by solutions moving from distant sources to favourable structural and chemical environments in or related to the reef.In more recent exploration performed in the course of preparing for mining production, the rate of ore discovery within the same general geological context has been greatly accelerated by the use of new geophysical techniques and drilling equipment. Reserves of 21.5 million tons, averaging 4 per cent lead and 7.2 per cent zinc, were reported in 1965, and production from open pits at the rate of approximately 248,000 tons of concentrates per year is in progress"

THERE is at the present time a revived interest in amalgamation, due to the number of mines starting up, usually on high-grade ore, and utilizing this relatively cheap and convenient means of recovering gold, more especially in their initial stages of production. The marked increased use of the amalgamation process has revealed a dearth of amalgamators and there is no doubt the art of amalgamation has stood still for a generation or two and is not readily applicable to the modern practice of milling gold ores. Mill operators of long experience are learning the art for the first time and are giving it intelligent study, and considerable testing and research work is now being undertaken Most millmen consider amalgamation a simple process, and so it is when we have a clean ore with coarse gold, specially when stamps are used for crushing. In treating Nova Scotia ores by stamps and amalgamation, recoveries of 95 to 97 per cent are common and easily obtained. So-called 'under-water feed' is almost universally used in Nova Scotia and is quite beneficial. The water is supplied through jets between the dies and below the die surface and maintains this space as a live trap which catches the gold particles before they are overground and spoilt for amalgamation. With this method, the portion of gold recovered in the battery is higher than usual and often amounts to 80 per cent of the total gold in the ore, the remaining 20 per cent being caught on the plate. As a continuous amalgamator, the simple plate cannot be excelled. Some of the modern devices having moving or covered and not very accessible plates, which cannot be readily inspected and dressed to keep them in condition, do not give the best results in service. An exception might be drawn in the case of amalgamation of very heavy ore or concentrate which would bank up unless the plate is carried at such a steep inclination as to weep mercury. Difficulties in stamp-mill amalgamation are encountered when acid water is used or when grease is present. Also, certain sulphides and graphitic and talcose ores give trouble, resulting in poor gold recovery and high mer-cury loss. The older literature on gold milling deals with the common troubles of this type and the old-time amalgamator was well able to take care of day-by-day difficulties. When the difficulties were unsurmountable, the ore was classed as 'refractory' and other processes were used.

A concise historical review is given of the Overpelt plant and the general principles of zinc hydrometallurgy are briefly outlined, together with a description of the new electrolytic zinc plant ore roasting process and, more particularly, the original Overpelt roasting process. A detailed description of the flowsheet of the zinc electrowinning plant, .with an annual capacity of 100,000 t, successfully put into operation in May 1974, is given. The treatment of the residues is performed following the goethite process ; the purification is continuous in two steps; the tank house is equipped with cells containing jumbo cathodes; the handling and stripping of the cathodes is fully mechanized. Concluding the description, some metallurgical and other features of the project are explained in detail.

In March 2003, Phelps Dodge started up an innovative pressure leach facility for processing copper concentrates at the Bagdad mine in Arizona. This paper describes the development of the concentrate leaching plant at Bagdad and the operational results from start up to present. Optimization efforts and an approach to mineralogical modeling of the concentrate to calculate oxygen utilization are also presented.

"Coal spontaneous combustion (SponCom) is a natural phenomenon in underground operations, which can either happen naturally or be triggered by human activities. For underground operations, espe-cially in coal, SponCom can happen frequently as a result of air leakage, although its incubation period may vary depends on types of coal and surrounding environment, resulting in uncertainty in control. In China, most of the underground coal operations now use longwall mining method because of its superior safety, high productivity and efficiency. With an increased popularity, there is also an increasing necessity to study spontaneous combustion, its occurrence and management. There have been many theoretical analysis and experimental studies over the past half century hoping to understand the occurrence of coal combustion and its control measures to better understand the occurrence and to design controlling measures to limit the dam-age it causes. In this paper, research on coal spontaneous combustion fundamentals from these three aspects will be reviewed, gaps highlighted and possible directions for future studies. INTRODUCTION The history of anthropic development is the history of human's energy utilization progress. From the first usage of fire, people have been continuingly seeking energy resources on earth. Coal, as an abundant, economic and convenient source of fuel quickly became indispensable and made significant contribution to economic growth worldwide. With technology and societal development, people are becoming more and more coal-dependent, but at the same time, problems of fossil fuel combustion came into sight. In global coal mining industry, spontaneous combustion has now presented one of the most challenging safety issues, it is also believed that it has contributed significantly toward the climate change. It is essential that more effort be invested to examine the cause of SponCom and its control measures. Coal SponCom is a complex process, with both physical and chemical inter-actions among various interrelated factors such as local airflow distribution, ventilation pressure, methane emissions (if any), and physical surroundings underground. With the advent of powerful computers, simulation techniques and af-fordable modelling packages in recent years, significant advances have been made in understanding sponta-neous combustion. But because of the complex nature of combustion and varying underground conditions, there are still areas that need further examining. This paper will focus on illustrating the current research of coal spontaneous combustion and addressing research gaps and future study areas."

"The Westerose Leduc (D-3) pool, a Devonian reef reservoir situated in Central Alberta, Canada, has now been producing for over seven years. As a unit operation, the pool pro-vides an interesting example of the full exploitation of gravity segregation tendencies. The reef has a 238-foot oil column, underlain •by bottom water and over-lain by a substantial gas cap. The original hydrocarbons in place were 147.96 million STB oil and 94.4 MMMCF of Taw gas cap gas. Nine-teen producing wells on 80-acre spacing have been completed, most of which are highly productive. Gas injection operations return solution gas to the gas cap. A study of the rock and fluid properties of the pool show it to be conducive to production by gravity segregation at high rates. Monthly average producing rates have varied between 800 B/D and 8,000 B/D and have recently totalled 3,000 BID to 5,000 B /D. Recovery and performance predictions under partial pres-sure maintenance at 10,000 BID indicate an ultimate recovery of 66 per cent of the original oil in place. In the absence of pressure maintenance, recovery would be only slightly less."

"Laboratory-scale tests were carried out to investigate the response of a high-grade (~143 g/tonne) well-liberated gold ore to flotation using two collector types. Octyl and amyl xanthates, representing conventional types of collectors, were tested against an n-octanoic and hexanoic acids under moderate and high redox potential conditions. The latter was based upon a suggestion in literature that monocarboxylic acids are able to adsorb onto the surface of gold at redox potentials near 600 mV (SCE). This investigation did not demonstrate that these carboxylic acids could function as collectors for gold in real ores. In fact, they appear to have slightly depressed gold. However, the results demonstrated that octyl and amyl xanthates acted as highly effective gold collectors for this ore and that an increase in the collector dosage led to an increase in recovery for all mean particle sizes. In some tests, gold recoveries of around 95% were attainable in concentrates with grades around 6 kg/tonne, indicating that xanthate flotation remains a viable means of concentrating gold even at coarse grain sizes. Various aspects of the process such as grade-recovery performance and recovery by size are discussed.INTRODUCTION Three methods are used for the recovery of gold in mineral processing, either alone or in combination: gravity concentration, cyanidation and flotation. Gold occurs as a by-product in some ores together with platinum group metals and as the primary metal in other ores in the form of native gold and electrum, which are alloys of gold, silver and minor amounts of copper. Flotation is a viable method for recovering liberated gold where the gold is visible under an optical microscope (greater than 1 µm in size) and where the attachment of gold grains is not prevented due to bubble loading by competing minerals. It is generally known that grains finer than 150 µm in size will float with most collectors."

The Boleo Copper-Cobalt-Zinc-Manganese Project of Baja Mining Corp. is situated adjacent to Santa Rosalia on the Baja Peninsula of Mexico. The El Boleo ore is a mixed oxide-sulfide deposit with major values in copper, cobalt, zinc and manganese. The metallurgical process designed to treat the El Boleo orebody involves a sulfuric acid leach in seawater using oxidative and then reductive leaching to maximize metal extraction. The leach solution is separated from the barren solids via counter current washing through a series of high rate thickeners. Copper is recovered using conventional SX-EW processing as cathode. Zinc and cobalt are extracted from the copper SX raffinate after iron and aluminum precipitation. The CSIRO DSX solvent system (Versatic® 10 and LIX® 63 mixture) are used in this extraction. Manganese remains in the DSX raffinate and is recovered by soda ash addition as a high quality manganese carbonate precipitate. Zinc and cobalt are acid stripped from the loaded DSX solvent. Zinc is then re-extracted away from cobalt using Cyanex® 272 extractant and stripped into a highly concentrated strip liquor (+100 g/L Zn) and directed to either a spray dryer or a granulator for production of zinc sulfate monohydrate. The zinc solvent extraction raffinate, containing cobalt, advances to another SX circuit using Cyanex® 272, for the recovery of cobalt as cobalt cathode. In this paper, the detailed results from bench and integrated pilot plant testing for zinc recovery from the El Boleo ore will be described. The results of this testing are currently being used to engineer the commercial plant at El Boleo.

In the last five years, new iron ore pellet plants have been built with significantly reduced air pollution levels compared to the older generation of plants. European and American pollution controls are more stringent that in China and Brazil. The recent American plants have successfully employed circulating fluidized beds for sulfur control, baghouses for particulate control, activated carbon injection for mercury and a new design of specialized low-NOx burners.

The original analogue instrumentation at Lornex Mining Corporation to optimize the throughput by controlling the power drawn by the semi-autogenous mills was found to be inadequate because of the frequent changes in ore type. Although the trunnion bearing pressure of the mill was a crucial control criterion, it was not utilized in the original control scheme. After several plant tests of different types of analogue controllers were unsuccessful in finding any control equipment suitable for this application, it was concluded that a digital process control computer was required. Computer control strategy to optimize the grinding rate by controlling the power and the bearing pressure of the semi-autogenous mill was developed and a Fox 2 /30 computer made by Foxboro was selected. After six months of experimentation, it was found that the throughput was increased substantially by computer control.

In this work, a detailed characterization of the cyclic damage mechanisms on duty in car heat exchangers has been carried out in order to improve their reliability. The material which consists in very thin (<0.3 mm thick) sheets formed of 3 co-rolled aluminum alloys (4045 /3916/ 4045) has been brazed in order to obtain metallurgical and surface conditions representative of those of the real components. Fatigue tests at constant stress amplitude have been performed at room temperature and 120°C in order i) to characterize the cyclic resistance of the studied materials and ii) to study the effect of temperature on the fatigue damage mechanism. The mechanisms leading to failure have been identified from post mortem fractographic analysis. The Wohler curves obtained show that, contrary to common structural Al alloys, this type of thin sheet brazed multi material can be cycled for several hundred thousand cycles at very high stress level (> ~ 80 % of the tensile strength). This behaviour is analysed with respect to the microstructure resulting from the brazing process and the low number of grains present in the sample thickness (around 5 grains).

To meet the flotation process requirements, the large-scale flotation cell must be designed for sufficient pulp mixing, reasonable air dispersion and solid suspension, which is very difficult to design for super large-scale flotation cell. Hence, the flotation cell scale-up and optimization for a short period is a challenge for super large-scale flotation cell design. Computational fluid dynamics simulation has been applied in flotation cell study, which is effective, timesaving and low cost in the study of the flow field distribution for super large-scale flotation cell. This paper demonstrates the flow field characteristics in the 600m3 flotation cell by CFD. The flotation cell model is meshed with hexahedral grid and the high mesh quality assures the computational precision. MRF model, namely a steady-state approximation, ensures that individual cell zones can be assigned different rotational speed. Euler-Euler approach is chosen for multiphase flow simulation to treat different phases as interpenetrating continua. Numerical simulation of single phase, two-phase and three-phase are investigated respectively. Results suggested that the flotation cell has the apparent upper and lower flow circulation. In condition of the impeller rotation, the air is dispersed reasonably. In addition, the solid phase volume concentration distribution in the cell has a little difference.

SHERRITT GORDON Mines Limited annually produce 300,-000 pounds of pure cobalt by processing a nickel-cobalt-copper-iron sulphide ore which is mined at Lynn Lake, Manitoba. The ore (containing 0.04 per cent Co) is •concentrated to give a concentrate containing l 1-12 per cent nickel, about 2.0 per cent .copper, and 0.25-0.35 per cent cobalt, which is treated at the Refinery in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The concentrate is leached in an ammoniacal solution of ammonium sulphate using compressed air as the oxidant. After filtration the leach solution contains, besides nickel and cobalt, copper ammines, sulpharnates and salts of various thionic acids. The copper is removed by precipitation as sulphide and the sulphur compounds converted to ammonium sulphate by a combined oxidation and hydrolysis treatment. The purified solution •Containing about 45 gpl of nickel and 1 gpl of cobalt is treated with gaseous hydrogen under pressure at 350°F to precipitate metallic nickel powder, the precipitation 'being terminated when the nickel content of the solution is about 0.8-1 gpl. Introduction Kootenay strata of Lower Cretaceous age contain much of the highest rank coal produced in Alberta. These strata outcrop in the foothills and mountains of southwestern Alberta and southeastern British Columbia, and the economic value of the coal seams contained in them was evident to the earliest explorers, who refer co them in their journals. Lacer, investigation of the .coal measures was undertaken by prospectors and by a succession of geologists, most of whom were in the employ of the Federal government, but some acted for private interests. Surveys by these men proved chat foothills and mountain regions hold immense quantities of high-grade coal within easy reach of transportation facilities, and their conclusions have accelerated the development of the coal-mining industry m Alberta. Among geologists who have contributed much to our knowledge of the region are J. M. Dawson, G. M. Dawson, R. C. McConnell, D. B. Dowling, J. D. Mackenzie, B. Rose, J. R. Marshall, B. Rose, J. R. Marshall, B. R. McKay, J. A. Allan, and J. L. Carr. The present paper is to a great extent a compilation of the work of the above men and of several others who have investigated the area lying between Bow river and Crowsnest pass. Space does not permit a list of all the sources of information so chat only chose of prime importance are given in the text. Data for the map and ?cross-sections of Figure 1 were taken from the following published maps of the Geological Survey of Canada: Cascade Coal Basin, Pub. 933; Canmore, Maps 322 and 323; Upper Elk River and Upper Highwood Rivers, Pub. l980; Blairmore, Pub. 1584; Southfork Coal Area Map l03A; and of the Research Council of Alberta: Highwood-Elbow Area, Map 20; and Ribbon Creek Area, Map 21. In some cases, the cross-sections have been simplified or otherwise altered, and for these revisions the writer cakes full responsibility. The stratigraphic sections of Figure 2 have been taken from published reports of the above mentioned organizations. The area covered in this paper is shown in Figure l. It is wholly within Alberta, and reaches from township 5 to township 27 and from range 1 co range 11, west of the fifth meridian. Its location is about fifty miles west of both Calgary and Lethbridge. Topography of the area ranges from foothill on the east to mountainous on the west. In this paper&apos; the foothill region is considered to be chat which lies immediately east of the most easterly mountain ranges, such as Livingstone and Highwood. There are two principal coal mining districts in the area, one served by the main line of the Canadian ?Pacific railway and centring about Canmore, the other by a branch line of che same railway and centring about Bellevue, Blairmore, and Coleman.
