"A scale model was designed to simulate the airborne Barringer INPUT time domain electromagnetic system. The amplitude of the response to a vertical conductive dyke varies considerably with the conductor's thickness conductivity product (TCP). The response increases from a minimum detectable level at a TCP of about 2 mhos, rises to its maximum value at a dyke TCP of 15 mhos and then falls again so that conductors with a TCP exceeding 500 mhos would probably remain undetected. Measurements made with both standard receiver coil configurations (maximum or minimum coupled) indicate comparable effectiveness for both systems, either from the viewpoint of vertical conductor detection or from the viewpoint of discrimination against overburden anomalies."

"IntroductionDURING the past half century, the economy of Western Canada was largely centred on agriculture. However, the impact of World War II has led to an acceleration in the development of a variety of natural resources so that, today, Western Canada is experiencing great industrial development. Consequently, the availability •of low-cost energy assumes prime importance. In the final analysis, industrial growth and expansion are intimately linked to the energy resources.Coal ReservesHas Western Canada adequate coal reserves to meet the present accelerating demand for power in the days that lie ahead? This question must be answered before detailed consideration can be given to the probable patterns •by which various energy sources in Western Canada may be expected to meet the expanding demand. Figure 1 indicates the extent and distribution of the Canadian coal reserves, the data having been prepared by Dr. B. R. MacKay for the Royal Commission on Coal in 1946 (1). The amount of readily recoverable coal is listed as one-half the quantities shown on the chart. It is interesting-to note that upwards of 90 per cent •of the Canadian coal reserves .are located in the three most westerly Canadian provinces. It has been estimated that the coal reserves, at the present rate of mining, would be adequate for about 3,000 years. Consequently, it may be concluded that the coal •reserves in Western Canada •are indeed adequate to meet tremendous energy demands for many centuries. When the oil and natural gas have been exhausted, the great coal reserves will still be available."

Rockfall drapery systems are commonly used as a simple, fast and cheap measure against the rock falling trajectories affecting very steep slopes. The system basically consists of a steel mesh, which is held on the top edge with a longitudinal cable fixed by means of a suitable number of anchors. The effect of this kind of intervention is to control the falls of the rocks, which are driven toward the bottom with slow velocity, or are stabilized on place. It can be used on any kind of slope to protect sensitive target in the mining industry, roads and railways, and inhabited areas. The falling blocks, typically smaller than 0.6 - 1.0 m in diameter, pile up into a trench (or into a ?pocket of mesh?) at the bottom. In comparison to other types of rockfall interventions, the simple drapery is cheaper, and its maintenance is easier, but on the other hand it cannot be considered the remedy for shallow instabilities, because it can only mitigate the effect of the falling trajectories. The design of simple draperies requires the analysis of several factors like the slope features (height, gradient, morphology), the geological and dynamic features (nature of the ground or rock, type of instability, erosion problem, blocks size), the environmental condition (presence of vegetation, aesthetical problem), the installation problem (accesses to the slope, safety for the workers, safety for the surrounding areas) and finally the performance required (temporary or permanent intervention, required maintenance, cost). Finally the most problematic design-step is the choice of the suitable mesh, the top longitudinal cable, and the top anchors type. Because of the highly variable nature of rockfall behaviour these structures cannot be standardized, but they have to be analyzed and designed for each case. Maccaferri has developed a new software application (MacRO 2) has a practical tool to define the mesh and the related supporting structure composed by up-slope cable and anchors. The software, based on the approach proposed by Muhunthan B. et al. (2005), allows designers to verify the top longitudinal cable, the anchors, and the mesh drapery, and to plan for maintenance procedures. Even if the method seems quite simple and rough, it is effective and lets the designer correctly foresee the materials and the geometrical features to be used on the interventions. This paper analyses the condition for the simple drapery installation, the main steps for the calculations, and it will present a case study in a U.S. mine. Nevertheless, even if the software allows a quick and simple calculation approach, onsite observations are always recommended in order to achieve a good design, with the ultimate goal of protecting property and human lives.

The additives polyacrylamide, 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, Tetra-butylammonium bromide, Benzalkonium chloride and chitin are evaluated during zinc electrolysis from synthetic acidic sulphate electrolyte containing Mn2+ ions, in absence and in presence of 0.0055 mg dm-3 of Sb3+ ions. Galvanostatic polarization tests for 2 hours at 50 mA cm-2 and 38oC were carried out to determine the cathodic and anodic potentials, and current efficiency of the deposited zinc. Potentiodynamic polarization and cyclic voltammetry tests have also been employed to study the electrochemical behavior of each additive on the zinc deposit on aluminum electrode. Results showed that, in presence of Sb3+, adding 1 to 3 mg of 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride increases the cell voltage by ˜0-7 mV. Current efficiency is increased by ˜4.90-6.40%; power consumption is reduced by ˜147-173 kWh t-1 by adding 1-3 mg, respectively. However, in absence of Sb3+, cell voltage is decreased by ˜7-28 mV, current efficiency is increased by ˜0.70-1.50%; power consumption is reduced by ˜41-47 kWh t-1 by adding 1-3 mg. The effect of the other additives on cell voltage, current efficiency, lead content and morphology of zinc deposit has also been examined. Surface morphology and crystallographic orientation of the deposit was studied using scanning electron microscopic (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The content of lead in the deposit has also been measured using inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy (ICP).

This paper offers a brief review of current literature pertaining to vacuum degassing or vacuum casting of steel as practiced in the U.S.A., Germany and the U.S.S.R. The advantages of vacuum degassing of large forging ingots, heavy section casting, for the conversion of rimming bessemer steels to killed steel and for the production of transformer steels are discussed. Operating pressures, reduction in gas contents and improvements in hydrogen segregation, steel cleanliness and mechanical properties, obtained with the various techniques, are described. The paper includes a description of an experimental vacuum stream-droplet degassing unit and some preliminary results obtained at the Physical Metallurgy Division Research Laboratories Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa on laboratory steel melts. Introduction The pages that follow present a brief chronological survey of views which have been held, and of legislation enacted, for the regulation of the natural gas and oil industry in the Turner Valley field, especially as regards conservation of the natural gas. To provide a necessary background for an adequate understanding of the progress of events in western Canada, there is included also a compilation, from technical and legal authorities, of some of the more important measures which have been adopted for the regulation of the oil and gas fields of the United States, where these measures have had, or are likely to have, a bearing on the course of our domestic industry. Owing to exigencies of space, it has been possible to refer only to the most outstanding proposals and legislation, and to these in the briefest possible form. Although, so far as Canada is concerned, the data presented are restricted almost entirely to the Turner Valley field, it is the hope of the writer that the paper may prove of value for purposes of reference: for any similar gas and oil fields discovered in western Canada will certainly revive and intensify the problem of the proper steps to be taken for the conservation of the gas. Definition of 'Conservation The term conservation has been so misunderstood and misrepresented that, to many persons in Alberta, it means little more than closing-in wells. In the light of the definition of Charles E. Hughes, that 'True conservation of a raw material is its economical use', the subject of natural gas conservation is inseparably involved with the study of the function of the -gas and with the development of the principles of unit operation.

The preparation of high-purity zirconyl compounds was studied in order to develop an economical process for obtaining pure zirconium via the caustic fritting of zircon sand. The direct dissolution of caustic frits with concentrated hydrochloric or nitric acid at 80c. followed by the addition of a small amount of acidified gelatin, gave high-purity zirconyl chloride or nitrate. The addition of a small amount of gelatin caused a mutual flocculation between colloidal silica and gelatin. The precipitation of this silica floc markedly lowered the content of silica in the product. The silica content of the compounds (or solution) so produced, generally less than 100 ppm., was sufficiently low for tributyl phosphate extraction for nitrate solutions. It was found that the degree of purification de-pends not only on the procedures employed but also on the nature of the frit itself. Silica was more effectively eliminated from the fritted product produced at higher temperatures, and less silica was present in the com-pound prepared from the frit produced in a shorter heating time. "A 10-cm thick clay-rich layer near the top of the Manitou Falls Formation of the Athabasca Group is unusual in its breccia texture, alteration, and detrital mineral composition relative to the adjacent overlying and underlying sedimentary beds. This layer is composed of angular quartz grains set in an illite >> kaolinite + dickite matrix. Deformed clay-rich fragments within the layer have very similar mineral assemblages. The presence of euhedral accessory minerals including Ti-oxides and aluminophosphatesulphate minerals points to a diagenetic/hydrothermal origin. The presence of individual grains of Kfeldspar and amphibole is unusual relative to the typical Athabasca quartz arenite; originally, these minerals were probably included in detrital quartz and subsequently liberated during fracturing. The textures and alteration characteristics suggest that this layer is a hydraulically-fractured unit, which has experienced hydrothermal fluid alteration - a possible pathway distally related to uranium mineralization Une couche argileuse de 10 cm d’epaisseur pres du sommet de la Formation de Manitou Falls du Groupe d'Athabasca est remarquable par sa texture brechique, son alteration et la composition de ses mineraux detritiques qui different de ceux des couches sedimentaires sus- et sous-jacente. Location The Frood ore-body is expressed on surface as a prominent gossan ridge, with a total length of approximately two miles. The original Frood (the old No. 3 mine of the Canadian Copper Company) is at the southwest end of this gossan; adjoining it on the northeast is the Frood Extension (until 1929 the property of i:he Mond Nickel Company), while at the extreme northeast end is the Stobie mine. The first two of these divisions of the ridge form the Frood mine as it is known today.? This lies in lots 6 and 7 of the sixth concession, township of McKim, and is two and a half miles north of the city of Sudbury. The general elevation is 1,000 feet above sea level. The Ore-Body The Frood-Stobie parallel offset(l), as its name implies, has no connection in the field with the main mass of the Sudbury nickel eruptive-a norite. It lies one mile to the southeast of that body, and, in general, parallels it in strike. The ore occurs as a more or less tabular structure in what is known locally as the Sudbury series. They are the oldest rocks of the district, and have been placed by Collins(2) as earlier than the lower Huronian, of pre-Cambrian time. The series is comprised of sediments, volcanics (both acid and basic flows), tuffs, agglomerates, breccias, and basic intrusives, all highly metamorphosed, yet all forming a more or less regular picture. The controlling feature of the area has been the attitude of the sedimentary strata, from which has arisen the present sill-like character of the flow rocks, the basic intrusives, and the ore-body itself.

"The paper describes the CDN$400 million expansion at Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited’s operations. The company has continuously produced copper and zinc at the Flin Flon metallurgical plant since 1930. The paper details the company’s operational turnaround since 1995 and “The 777 Project” which includes two new mines, expansion and modification of the concentrators, expansion of the zinc pressure leach plant, a new zinc electrolytic cellhouse and modifications to the copper smelter gas handling system to reduce ground level gas emissions. IntroductionHudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited (HBMS) was incorporated in 1927 to mine and process the world-class Flin Flon copper and zinc orebody. Ore concentration and metallurgical facilities were constructed in Flin Flon. The metallurgical complex capability is currently 89 000 tonnes of copper metal and 98 000 tonnes of zinc metal from both HBMS and purchased concentrates.Flin Flon, with a population of 7000, is in Manitoba and partly in the province of Saskatchewan. The location is isolated with Winnipeg 800 km to the south and Saskatoon 500 km southwest.Today, three underground mines feed the Flin Flon concentrator, one feeds the Ruttan concentrator at Leaf Rapids, 200 km to the north of Flin Flon, and Chisel North mine feeds the Snow Lake concentrator (Fig. 1).The Flin Flon volcanic massive sulphide proximal and distal orebodies are within the Flin Flon greenstone belt which stretches from the west of Flin Flon to the east of Snow Lake, a distance of 250 km. The belt is approximately 100 km wide before disappearing below the paleozoic cover to the south."

This paper presents a case study in which a slope failure was observed on the west wall of the LAB Chrysotile mine in the vicinity of the main ramp in January 2010. Airborne LiDAR results were used to evaluate slope geometry before and after the failure occurred. Back analysis of the failure was performed to assess rock mass properties at the slope scale using various numerical techniques: limit equilibrium, finite elements and fracture networks. The various approaches correlated well with field observations.

IntroductionDuring the past decade mill technology has evolved significantly in the following key areas:• improvements in variable speed motors continue with on-going advances in electronics;• ring motors, or gearless drives, are becoming more common in mill sizes 32 ft and larger, with ratings of 10 000 HP and greater;• geared drives have become available up to ratings of 9500 HP per pinion, compared to the earlier 6000 HP guideline;• improvements in speed reducer technology due to the use of carburized and ground precision gearing, make the high speed motor-speed reducer drive more competitive with the direct coupled low speed motor drive;• a unique speed reducer drive is being introduced to this industry which combines ring gear drive pinions with speed reduction. mprovement in gear alignment is claimed, and the overall drive arrangement is more compact than is possible with a conventional speed reducer drive;• the first 38 ft and 40 ft diameter mills have been designed and manufactured; and • application of large multi-shoe bearings have made shell supported mill configurations available for all, including the largest sizes. "LocationThe Gibraltar mine is located in central British Columbia (NTS 93B/9W), 362 km north of Vancouver. Access is provided by 20 km of paved road from McLeese Lake, which lies 45 km north of Williams Lake on Highway 97. Latitude and longitude of the mine are 52° 30' and 122° 16', respectively.The total area of the McLeese Lake site is approximately 1700 ha (4200 acres). This includes the orebodies, dumps, surface drainage collection system, plant site, roads and tailings ponds.Brief Description of OperationOre is mined by open pit methods and is concentrated using conventional crushing, grinding and flotation processes. Copper and molybdenum flotation occurs at an average rate of 40 000 tons per day. Tailing is discharged to an impoundment area and the water recycled as process water. Additional copper is extracted from the waste dumps using sulphuric acid as a leach solution followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning.HistoryExploration by Gibraltar began in 1964, continuing until late 1970, at which time it was announced that the property would go into production. Construction started in early 1971, with initial production in March 1972. Target capacity of 30 000 tons per day was achieved by the end of March and is currently at 40 000 tons per day.Ore reserves as of January 1, 1998 were 184 384 000 tons grading 0.31% Cu and 0.010% MoS2."

"IntroductionEnvironmental pollution problems, caused by gases or effluents, by high noise levels or from air borne dust, are placing increasing demands of the operators, from statutory authorities, and from the general public, to adopt more stringent dust control measures. This requires that a successful plant dust control program be an integral part of any plant operation. While a successful environmental program is a key factor in maintaining productivity and good labour relations, anticipation of future environmental regulations during the plant design phase can avoid the high cost of plant upgrading, or dealing with pulmonary conditions in the work force in subsequent years.Particulate removal, conventionally called dust collection, involves the removal of coarse- and fine-particulates from the airstream. Although generally limited to that required for contro!Hng plant generated air emissions, particulate control equipment also has a wide application for air cleaning and filtration inside the plant, as well as for recovery of usable products.In the late 1950s and early 1960s the public became more concerned with the problems of air pollution. This increasing concern was stirred by an awareness of the extremes to which water pollution had progressed in many of the rivers and lakes, by increasing perception of air pollution as detected by visible smog and harsh chemical odors, by the alarming rate of increase of smog plagued cities and communities, and by specific incidents where ill health could be traced to specific episodes of air pollution. Particle size is perhaps the most important single factor affecting particulate control. Large particles (over 5 microns) constitute the major mass fraction of most sources of emission and economical control equipment dqes exist for their efficient control. However, while these larger particles frequently represent the source of soiling and unsightly smoke plumes, they are not a major health problem as they tend to settle relatively quickly, are more easily scrubbed from the atmosphere by rain, and are not able to penetrate the respiratory system. By far the most important form of particulate air pollution is the fine particulate, (below 3 microns) which is harmful to the pulmonary system. The adverse effects caused by this particulate matter on human health are for the most part related to injury to the surfaces of the respiratory system. Particulate material in the respiratory tract may produce injury itself, or it may act in conjunction with gases, altering their sites or their modes of action. A combination of particulates and gases may produce an effect that is greater than the sum of the effects caused by either individually (i.e. synergistic effect)."

Pig iron and silicospiegeleisen were produced experimentally from a very low-grade manganiferous iron ore from Steep Rock, Ontario, by a two-stage electric smelting process. The most favourruble operating conditions were determined for each stage. Cement clinker then was made by calcining the slag from the second stage of smelting, with additional limestone and alumina. (This slag would normally be a waste material). The cement clinker produced had the composition of commercial Portland cement, and met the physical test requirements of the Canadian Standards Association Specification A5-1951 for normal Portland cement as well as could be expected for a material produced on .such a small scale.

To meet the business objectives of a metallurgical project, there is often a need for new and untried technology or equipment, whose very novelty can present serious risks to meeting those objectives. The key risk management approach is a rigorous stepwise progression from theoretical evaluations and laboratory tests to pilot plant trials. These must be followed by demonstration-scale trials before final construction of a commercial scale plant, paying particular attention to the magnitude of the scale-up between phases. Success depends on following a well-defined program, not eliminating any steps, and ensuring adequate resources are available to the development team. Chapter 6 discusses the nature of technology risks to metallurgical plant projects, and the rigorous management practices needed to identify, analyze, evaluate, and avoid or mitigate them.

There are a number of high grade niobium deposits worldwide which have been deemed untreatable by flotation due to the very fine grained nature of the in situ pyrochlore, the primary niobium bearing mineral. A known method of recovering extremely fine particles is through the use of chelating reagents such as hydroxamic acids which have a strong affinity for transition metals. However, one of the major issues in the flotation of niobium bearing minerals using hydroxamic acids is the corresponding recovery of other transition metal gangue minerals including magnetite, hematite, and pyrite. In order to better understand the differences in behavior of niobium and iron bearing minerals in flotation with benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) and sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) at a range of pulp temperatures, a Box-Behnken experimental design was employed. Regression models for the global recovery of iron indicated that iron mineral recovery was significantly influenced by both BHA and SHMP dosage. Upon examinination of flotation products by semi-quantitative XRD, it was observed that recovery of iron oxide and sulphide minerals (hematite, magnetite, goethite, and pyrite) was problematic at high benzohydroxamic acid dosage, while sodium hexametaphosphate was mainly helpful for carbonate mineral depression. Iron rich carbonates (likely an iron rich dolomite) largely reported to the tails with increased SHMP dosage.

It has long been appreciated that chloride chemistry has a number of advantages over the more traditional sulphate route for both extracting and separating metals. Modern materials of construction, coupled with the development of a more cost-effective and efficient hydrochloric acid regeneration technology mean that chloride-based processes are now more competitive and attractive. Such processing routes are able to recover more of the contained metal values in a feed, including iron in a benign and/or marketable form, and particularly the so-called rare and rare-earth elements which are increasing in demand in our electronic age. These factors, therefore, add appreciably both to the overall economics of a project, but also offer a much more sustainable approach to our dwindling natural resources. Additionally, chloride-based flowsheets can be much more environmentally-friendly, offering practical alternatives to two of the biggest headaches faced by the industry, namely cyanide usage and the generation of red muds. This paper presents a brief theoretical background, focusing on the latest developments of ferrous iron oxidation and the low-temperature, selective hydrochloric acid regeneration process, which is the key unit operation for any chloride flowsheet, and discusses in general the advantages of the chloride approach. Several recently-developed flowsheets, which have been tested at the miniplant level, are presented for gold, base metals, titaniferous magnetites and lead-silver ores wherein the advantages of considering a chloride approach are highlighted.

The Salmita Gold Mine is located 240 air kilometres northea t of Yellowknife on the east shore of Matthews Lake. Salmita is one of several gold showings which are regionally associated with the steep easterly dipping contact zone between mafic, intermediate and fe lsic volcanics to the west and overlying finely laminated argillaceous sediments to the east. The volcanic assemblage forms a narrow 2 m to 7 m wide north to northwesterly trend ing Belt of Yellowknife Supergroup Archaen greenstone rocks. The contact zone exhibits exhalite character and the increased sulphide content provides a di stinct VLF-EM , IP/Resisti vi ty and/or magnetic signature. Gold occurs at or near this contact in three main settings: associated with si liceous vein-like structures; with finely disseminated sulphides within ericitic altered upper fe lsic tuffaceous unit ; or with quartz in narrow shear zones within the overlying sediment . The B-Vein is of the former type with free mi ll ing gold occurring within a highly sil iceous zone having an average widtn of 1.69 m. Alteration is intense within the immediately su rrounding host lithologies and includes the development of si lica, carbonate, sulphide, sericite and chlorite with minor graphite, epidote. tourmaline and scheelite. The mineable zone above the 4th level (-200 m) ha an average strike of 160 m and is divided into three south plunging ore shoots separated by the regional Salmita Shear Zone in the south and by a low-grade structural hiatus in the north. Production from the B-Vein commenced in August 1983 based on a diluted in situ ore reserve of 140,000 t grading 26.6 git Au . As of December 31, 1985, a total of 131 ,537 t grading 27.8 git Au have been mined at a ra.te of 160 t per day and a 96.4 percent recovery, to produce 3,522 ,000 g (113,227 ounces) of gold . Current (January I, 1986) reserves total 45,500 t grading 37 g/t Au down to the 10th level (-500 m) .
