Oxidation of pyrite and other metal sulfides is accelerated by the activity of acidophilic iron- and sulfur-oxidising microorganisms. The ideal biocide for controlling biocatalysed acid rock drainage (ARD) would be inexpensive, inhibitory toward sulfide-oxidising bacteria at low concentrations, relatively non-toxic toward non-target organisms, degradable in the environment outside the zone of application, stable and long-lived in the impacted environment, sufficiently mobile to penetrate into piles of waste rock or tailings, and effective regardless of the metal sulfides present. A potent agent for combating ARD that fits these criteria is the thiocyanate anion (SCN-). The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of thiocyanate in controlling or preventing ARD within several types of sulfidic waste rock and tailings. Results were evaluated within a context encompassing process water and solids management strategies employed at different precious and base metal mines. Sulfidic rock was treated with solutions of potassium thiocyanate and subjected to accelerated weathering tests in lab-scale humidity cells, trays, and columns. Certain tests also utilised solid phase copper thiocyanate (CuSCN) to evaluate a ærelease on demandÆ strategy. Leach solutions were analysed for parameters indicative of ARD including pH, redox potential, conductivity, acidity, sulfate, iron, and certain heavy metals. Two larger scale field tests were also initiated by personnel at separate mines using, in the first case, ore containing a pyritic component in large columns and, in the second case, waste rock containing base metal sulfides in lined pits. Humidity cell tests showed low concentrations of thiocyanate solution applied to pyritic waste rock could reduce ARD formation by 90 per cent or more compared to untreated controls, with the residual release of ARD components (eg sulfate, Fe, acidity) probably reflective of strictly chemical oxidation of the sulfides by molecular oxygen. Thiocyanate applied at a concentration of 22 mg/kg to waste rock from a base metal mining operation in large laboratory scale columns reduced acidity and sulfate release by 75 per cent to 80 per cent compared to untreated controls. This extent of reduction in ARD may not meet discharge water quality criteria, but has the potential to significantly reduce lime consumption and sludge production in a conventional neutralisation facility. The use of a solid-phase metal thiocyanate compound (CuSCN) at a dosage of 194 mg/kg pyritic ore resulted in the following per cent reductions in leach solution parameters in comparison to controls: sulfate (78 per cent), acidity (93 per cent), dissolved Fe (99.4 per cent), and dissolved arsenic (99.9 per cent). This compound has the further advantage of being relatively stable until needed, dissolving only in the presence of an acidic and oxidising ARD solution. If this line of investigation progresses favorably, it offers the possibility of an ARD prevention technique that may be applicable in some settings. Mine-site pilot scale tests with pyritic ore resulted in reductions in sulfate (56 per cent) and Fe, As (66 - 68 per cent). In sum, thiocyanate at relatively low concentrations dramatically reduced ARD from sulfidic rock in a simulated heap. The pilot test using waste rock containing base metal sulfides has begun only recently. A preliminary process design and cost estimate was made for fullscale application of thiocyanate to waste rock at a hypothetical gold mining operation producing 5000 tpd of ore and 10 000 tpd of sulfide containing waste rock. The combined capital and operating costs for the full-scale thiocyanate application facility were about $US 0.25/tonne of waste rock and $US 0.50/tonne of ore. Although thiocyanate is readily available commercially, it also occurs in process solutions associated with certain types of mining processes. Such solutions after selective treatment might be recycled to sulfidic waste rock or tailings, rather than being treated for thiocyanate degradation.

Ashanti Goldfields CompanyÆs (AshantiÆs) most recent development is the Geita Project in the Lake Victoria Goldfield of NW Tanzania. It comprises six distinct gold deposits within two mineralised trends: Nyankanga, Lone Cone, Geita Hill (Geita trend) and Matandani, Kukuluma and Area 3 West (Kukuluma trend). Between 1936 and 1966, the Geita area produced an estimated 5.5 M tonnes of ore from five underground deposits at an average recovered grade of 5.3 g/t. The discovery of Nyankanga was made by Ashanti in 1996 from RAB drilling of a +100 ppb Au anomaly in laterite soil above ferricrete cover. The Kukuluma trend was discovered by SAMAX Resources (taken over by Ashanti in 1998) between 1996 and 1997 from RC drilling of a +80 ppb Au laterite soil anomaly. Oxide facies banded iron formation (BIF) of the Upper Nyanzian System forms prominent topographic ridges and is the dominant host lithology for gold mineralisation. The ridges are flanked by felsic tuff units which lie stratigraphically above. Syn-genetic lamprophyre (vogesite) and post-genetic felsic dykes are also seen in the Geita trend. At Nyankanga a granodiorite-diorite suite has intruded as dykes and sills into BIF from a plug centred on a WNW fault and has produced wallrock alteration assemblages similar to those seen in Cu-porphyry systems (potassic, propylitic, etc) as well as sulphide and gold deposition. However, the main ore-grade mineralisation (as in the rest of the Geita trend) is controlled by low-to-medium angle structures dipping north-west and north with numerous splays in the hanging wall. High-grade shoots at Nyankanga plunge to the west and to the north-west, being lithologically and fault-controlled respectively. At Geita Hill the higher grade shoots are controlled by fold noses in BIF dipping to the north. Free gold occurs within fractures of sulphides. The deposits of Kukuluma and Matandani occur on an ancient (possibly Cretaceous) erosional plateau and are related to two WNW to NW trending shear zones, discordant to the local strike of the BIF sequence. Complete oxidation occurs up to 120 m depth and there is a strong supergene component to the gold distribution. Primary gold mineralisation is divisible into two distinct assemblages: arsenopyriteûpyrrhotiteûmagnetiteûchlorite associated with brecciated cherts and pyrite associated with shaley banded ironstones. Area 3W is most likely the fault-displaced extension of the same mineralised trend and comprises thin, intermittent zones of high-grade gold mineralisation occurring adjacent to a ridge in banded cherts and minor BIF. Current resources (measured, indicated and inferred) for the project are estimated at 89.24 Mt at an average grade of 4.17 g/t (11.97 Moz of contained gold) at a 1.0 g/t cut-off grade. Of this 9.83 Moz is within the Geita trend and 2.14 Moz is within the Kukuluma trend. A resource of 2.74 Moz is from an inferred resource at depth at Nyankanga where the viability of an underground operation is being studied. Proven and probable reserves are 49.77 Mt @ 3.46 g/t (5.54 Moz) based on a $325/oz gold price providing a mine life of ten years at an average production rate of 500 000 oz per year. Reserve estimation was carried out using mineable polygons to select resource blocks based on a series of mining and costs parameters. In addition key cost parameters were tested to provide sensitivities for pit optimisations and pathfinders for negotiations with suppliers and contractors. Construction began in March 1999 and first gold is expected to be poured in the second-quarter 2000.

The dissolution of carbon from carbonaceous materials into molten iron is a key step in various ironmaking operations. For example, in new direct smelting processes, carbon in the form of coal is injected into the molten iron bath, which leads to the dissolution of carbon. In foundry operations, typical recarburizer materials can range from high purity graphite to chars. The dissolution performance of these" materials is critical to the operation and could dictate the efficiency and economics of the process.Dissolution kinetics has been studied by various investigators to explain the influence of melt conditions and carbon type (Sahajwalla et al, 1994; Shigeno, Tokuda, and Ohtani, 1985; Orsten and Oeters; 1988; Ganguly and Reid, 1992; Wright and Taylor, 1993). The influence of melt sulphur content on the dissolution kinetics has been characterised (Sahajwalla et al, 1994), with sulphur retarding the rate of carbon dissolution. The carbon dissolution from different sources is seen to vary significantly even under similar melt conditions. This observation has been explained by investigators on the basis of the varying ash content present in the carbonaceous materials. However, ash content alone cannot account for the variability in dissolution kinetics reported in other studies. One such study is presented below.In a recent study (Sahajwalla et al, 1994), pulverised carbonaceous materials were injected into the molten iron bath and the" dissolution kinetics was established. The dissolution of graphite and glassy carbon, which contain almost 100 per cent carbon, was seen to be significantly different when the molten iron contained sulphur. The influence of melt sulphur content was explained on the basis of different wetting behaviour observed.Importantly, the study showed that even pure carbon sources dissolved at significantly different rates. Hence, their performance could not be explained on the basis of ash content.The key difference between graphite and glassy carbon is in their atomic structure. Graphite is highly ordered whereas glassy carbon has relatively poor ordering in its atomic structure. This study showed that the atomic structure in carbonaceous materials can have a significant effect on their dissolution performance.The focus of the present investigation which stems from the past study described above (Sahajwalla et al, 1994), is to investigate the influence of atomic structure of carbonaceous materials on their dissolution into Fe-C-S melts.The specific objective of this study is to determine the relationship between dissolution kinetics and crystallographic character of carbon sources. In order to accomplish this goal, a range of different materials representing a spectrum of carbon sources have been chosen for the investigation. These materials include brown coal char, two types of Auscarb (A and B), and commercial graphite. Auscarb is prepared by calcining Auscoal at 1000°C. Auscoal is made from chemically cleaned Australian coals (Bowling, Chandler and Waugh, 1990). Part 1 of this paper details the dissolution performance of the materials studied, while Part 11 describes the X-ray diffraction study. The relationship between the atomic structural dimension and dissolution rate constant is discussed in light of the results obtained.

Microcharacterisation, such as that described in this paper, provides understanding of a mineral system at multiple scales, and understanding microscale variations is the key to understanding the large-scale variations in a mineral system. More than 50 high-grade lode samples from across Plutonic Gold Mine (Plutonic), Marymia Inlier, Western Australia were analysed by a variety of techniques, including micro X-ray fluorescence (µXRF) mapping, micro X-ray computed tomography (µCT), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field emission gun SEM, electron back-scatter detector (EBSD), proton-induced X-ray emission microprobe and synchrotron XRF mapping. These data demonstrate that competency contrasts are the key to governing the location of Au mineralisation at Plutonic. Micro CT imaging of high-grade samples shows the Au filling in voids and pore-space in the rock, after having travelled along more permeable layers and already existing or reaction-induced pores formed during hydrothermal circulation. Using 3D visualisation, the Au is seen to form a connected network that appears undisturbed at the scale of the samples, and a high-grade Au deposition event was one of the last events to affect the rock. This interpretation is supported by SEM analyses on high-grade samples that reveal calc-silicate (epidote-clinozoisite) alteration that is not present in lower Au grade samples, which are typically dominated by potassic alteration, and that sulfides are typically less abundant close to the Au. The replacement of biotite by chlorite is an alteration associated with the high-grade Au-mineralising fluid. Gold is coarsest where Au particles are located on the margins of minerals, typically sulfide and quartz grains, suggesting the importance of rheological contrast at the microscale. Furthermore, EBSD data reveals that Au is undeformed and overprints peak metamorphic and retrograde minerals. Data confirm recent deposit-scale observations, suggesting that deposition of high-grade, visible Au was related to a hydrothermal fluid circulation event late in the geological history of Plutonic.CITATION:Gazley, M F, Duclaux, G, Fisher, L A, Hough, R M and Pearce, M A, 2015. In todayÆs demanding business landscape continual change and technological advancement is a given. With these changes there is now, more than ever, a need to ensure sustainable growth in respect of value protection and value adding whilst meeting the pressures and expectations of the societies in which we operate. Traditionally the management of safety has been a very reactive activity in the business, in some cases seen as an irritation and a disruptive process that demands a focus on preventing reoccurrences. This in turn has focused the measurement of safety performance on a range of lagging indicators û æafter the effect managementÆ. Gaining and maintaining a licence to operate is crucial to a sustainable business but as a prerequisite, organisations need to have a demonstrable ability to manage the safety of their people, as well as mitigating the people risk associated with the business activity. A major focus in the last decade has been on the implementation of enterprise risk management programs, where risk becomes embedded in all business systems and processes and the organisationsÆ genetic make up is programmed to analyse and integrate risk management into all facets of the business activity. The management of safety should be no different. One school of thought argues that there are no new accidents, but rather our inability to learn from the past. Others believe that as long as we have an appetite to achieve the unachievable, we will have to continue to push the boundaries, our safety comfort zones and inevitably take risks. Single reliance on highly evolved technical systems, elaborate processes, highly skilled people, safe equipment and safe work environments have shown one thing û they are not sustainable in providing adequate coverage in the business. In analysing a range of factors associated with some of the worst catastrophes of the 20th century, it can be suggested that they were in fact predictable and inevitable and that an integrated approach underpinned by sound risk management systems could have determined a different result. The key to a sustainable approach in the management of safety requires us to look at a multitude of aspects that collectively allow the performance of an organisation to be predictable. To have certainty in the business activities it is necessary to have controls in place that will mitigate the risks normally associated with unwanted events. It is ensuring that human factors effectively contribute to monitoring the planned approach and being able to safely adjust to any variability. In essence this is having the ability to proactively plan for the longer term. The sentiments articulated by organisational leaders echo that safety management is good business. Surely then a good business is a sustainable business, and a sustainable business is one that provides lasting benefits to its stakeholders.

This is the seventh major symposium organised by Illawarra Branch over the past five years and the fifth dealing with various aspects of coal. It is clear that all of you here need no convincing that black is beautiful! This symposium is on a broader canvas, covering the overall field of occurrence, preparation and utilization of black coal throughout Australia. It is thus the most comprehensive treatment of the subject by the Institute since the symposium organized in 1950 by the Sydney Branch with the co-operation of the then newly formed branches in Newcastle, Illawarra, Central Western N.S.W. and Southern Queensland, all of which shared coal as a major interest. The 1950 symposium was adopted as a volume in the series of seven published by the Fifth Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress in 1953. This historical reminiscence brings to our minds the circumstances in which these new Institute branches were formed. This happened in the year of the presidency of the late Frank Hockey, and at the time the Australian black coal industry was in many ways at a very low ebb. It was the time of extreme shortage of coal following World War II, and the industry was beset by industrial unrest on such a scale that daily bulletins were posted listing the number of idle pits, of idle miners and of tons of lost production. There could not, of course, be any thought of export marketing. Some of the more picturesque bulletins recorded the number of pits at which the ceremonial emptying of billies took place, and the number of pits at which the aroma of the horses' breath was insupportable. At an Institute conference at the time it is on record that the late lamented Austin Edwards, that tireless mineral researcher, author and editor, in his gentle way chided the personnel of the industry and the members of the Institute for having allowed a situation to develop in which a whole generation of Australian children could grow up without ever having seen coal or knowing what it was. It is sad that most children and most Australians have still never seen coal, and think of it as something dirty and uninteresting. The desperate situation of the black coal industry inspired moves by people in industry and in governments, whose plans and efforts have been recorded elsewhere, to modernize coal mining methods, to introduce coal preparation, and generally to restore the mines and the mining communities and to re-cast the steel industry and electricity generation. Amelioration of the traditionally troubled industrial relations was an integral part of this overall programme, and whilst one would wish this aspect had progressed further the situation has, in fact, improved immensely. New investment in exploration, mining, preparation, transport and utilization both by the existing coal mining groups and by new entrants, Australian and overseas, have played a large part in bringing about the transformation of the industry to such a point that Australian needs are being fully met and a large export market is being supplied - a situation that few would have dared to hope for in those dark post-war days. Forecasts of exports from New South Wales and Queensland show coal becoming a dominant foreign exchange earner for an indefinite term. Old King Cole may have vanished from our children's nursery rhymes but King Coal is here to stay, providingthat costs in the industry can be kept within competitive limits. It is all too easy for an industry to price itself out of the export market by inflation, by increased costs for a variety of reasons, and through currency readjustments. A second proviso is that we must continue to encourage a balanced attitude to environmental matters.

Application of thermal oxidation is considered a promising technique in reducing fugitive methane gas from ventilation air methane (VAM). A typical thermal oxidiser operates with diluted methane and converts it to less potent greenhouse gases. However, having a thermal oxidiser in the vicinity of the coalmine exhaust shaft is a major safety concern as its high operation temperature increases the likelihood of accidental fire and explosion. The aim of this study is to investigate the application and effectiveness of side venting technique in reduction of deflagration consequences caused by methane gas. To address this importance a series of experiments were conducted on a detonation tube designed and fabricated as part of larger scale VAM Abatement safety project. The experimental work was carried out into two stages: examine the flame and explosion properties in a large-scale detonation tube to get reliable data; and then design and employ a venting system into the detonation tube to verify the effectiveness and performance of the venting against the flame and explosion.Results corresponding to this study show that the side vent duct with venting coefficient magnitude of 37 had a significant influence on methane flame deflagration and the explosion characteristics. The maximum pressure rise at the detonation tube reduced approximately 20 per cent to 32 per cent by applying the side venting duct. Also, the data shows that the venting damped the pressure oscillation after the flame deflagration which eventually reduced the system instability. Finally, by applying the venting technique the expected level of damage due to the dynamic pressure reduced to the level of limited building damage.CITATION:Ajrash, M, Zanganeh, J and Moghtaderi, B, 2017. The surface reactivity of underwater deposited, high-sulfide copper mine tailings was evaluated under fresh and saline water cover conditions by measuring the surface and pore water quality as a function of time. The experiments were conducted in aquarium type lysimeters having a shallow, well-aerated water cover up to approximately 0.25 m over the tailings. Natural lake water was used for the fresh water cover and seawater for the saline water cover scenarios. The tailings showed significant surface reactivity and oxidation under both fresh and saline water cover conditions. The surface water quickly became moderately to highly acidic, and surface oxidation of the tailings resulted in increased dissolution and release of sulfates, iron (total), calcium, magnesium, aluminium, manganese, copper, nickel, zinc, lead, cobalt and silicon to the water covers. A moderate to slightly increased loss of total sulfides, including pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite, occurred in the tailings surface layer to a very shallow depth. In comparison to the fresh water cover, the complete acidification of the saline water cover was delayed by approximately 30 - 40 days because of its additional available alkalinity. Whereas the rate of surface water acidification and release of aluminium and silicon were moderately reduced under saline water cover conditions in comparison to those for the fresh water cover, the release of calcium, magnesium, iron (total), copper, nickel, lead, zinc, sodium and potassium were enhanced. The mass transfer fluxes for dissolved copper, nickel lead, zinc and iron (total) from the tailings substrate to the surface water cover following surface water acidification were higher by 50 per cent or more in the saline water cover than those in the fresh water cover. This release was also reflected in moderate loss of pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite in the very shallow upper surface layer of the tailings at the tailings-water interface, although the loss of pyrite in the surface layer was less pronounced. In both cases, the dissolution of aluminosilicate minerals moderated, to a certain extent, pH and acidity in the water cover.

The 1980's has seen a revolution in gold mine developments in Australasia. We are witnessing a near ten fold increase in all phases of gold mine development ranging from exploration through to production. Ounces produced have yet to mirror this activity but have increased from a low point of 600,000 in 1980 to 1,800,000 ounces in 1985 in Australia alone. In 1980 the region had less than 10 gold mines, yet 14 new mines started production in 1985 and as many as 28 might start up in the next 18 months. Developing gold mines in the 1980's in Australasia has not been the easiest of jobs, yet the great number of new developments suggest that we have entered a new era that will rank in history along with the 1850's, 1890's and 1930's as high points.Within- our Australasian region two very distinctive styles of gold deposits are being discovered and developed. On the Australian mainland the new mines are in geologically old rocks and are mostly the low grade haloes surrounding worked out high grade deposits. Most are limited life open pit operations depending on recent innovative carbon-in-pulp or heap leach technology. In the Pacific Islands region the style of discoveries are geologically recent, large bulk-low-grade deposits often geologically analogous to porphyry copper deposits. These deposits are typically 10 to 20 times larger than those being proved up on the Australian mainland.

There is a well-known saying, variously attributed to the great King Solomon and other sages of antiquity, to the effect that 'there is nothing new under the sun'. The inventive genius of man, as far as it is personified in the metallurgist, has often had the truth of this statement poignantly brought to mind when investigating the priority of ideas in its own particular branch of science. Not infrequently some operation, at first inilocently taken for a novel procedure, has later been found to have had an irrefutable precedent in the more or less remote past.When confronted by a question of this kind the metallurgist can generally much simplify his search if he at once turns his scrutinising gaze towards that ancient home of metallurgy, Germany. Vast departments of the smelting art have originated there, and even when Germany has not been in position to claim priority of invention, it has at least been characterised by a distinction equally as worthy - ie that of the faithful and authoritative exposition of the theoretical grounds on which the invention rests.In the present instance, in endeavouring to trace the history of pyritic smelting, the writer has naturally turned in the abovementioned direction, and not without some result, although the recorded data are, as might have been expected, meagre. A complete history of the art of beneflciating ores by means of fire, in all its many ramifications, still remains to be written. Possibly it may never be written, for the extent of the subject is tremendous. It is even practically impossible to clearly trace the development of one of its most modest sub-branches in satisfactory detail, or to present that branch without going to a considerable extent into related matters of a merely general character. For the purpose of dealing with the subject it will be convenient to divide it into two concurrent heads, and to distinguish, for historical reasons as well as for metallurgical ones, between that branch of the general method of matte smelting, which, until about 1891, has been called 'pyritic smelting', and the more recent offshoot of the latter, which, by distinction, may be called 'pyrite smelting'. The nature of pyritic smelting was clearly defmed by Dr John Percy in 1880, and his interpretation3 may be accepted as well known. To recall the characteristics of the method we may perhaps paraphrase Dr Percy's meaning by describing the process as a special method for the smelting of lean or dry silver or gold ores, which do not contain sufficient lead or copper for these metals to act conveniently as collectors of the precious metals. The operation is conducted in a blast furnace, with an amount of carbonaceous fuel sufficing to produce an exclusively reducing atmosphere, and with the addition of pyrites, in order to form a regulus in which the precious metals shall be concentrated, the pyrites themselves being either argentiferous, auriferous, or cupriferous, or any combination of these three, or wholly barren of metal values. In the common acceptation of the term, it is understood that the use of the reverberatory furnace is excluded.

Flash X-radiographs were obtained of commercial electric No 6 and No 8* strength aluminium tube detonators in small-diameter cartridges of emulsion explosive at various times after fusehead operation. The trigger system for the radiography was based on the detection of light following fusehead firing via optical fibres inserted into the fusehead cavity during detonator assembly. These experiments were simulated using a finite element hydrocode with realistic treatment of the non-ideal reaction kinetics. Excellent agreement was demonstrated for the shape and position of the shock waves. In both cases, initiation of the emulsion was predominantly forward from the detonator. For the No 8* strength detonator, this initiation resulted from the shockwave delivered through the sides of the detonator, while for the No 6 strength detonator, initiation was the result of a complex interaction between shockwaves originating both from the sides and from the endcap. In the reverse direction (towards the crimped end of the detonators), initiation was only weakly dependent on detonator strength, being controlled mainly by the competing processes of rarefaction from the cartridge boundaries and comer turning of the detonation wave from the forward initiation. The consequences for field performance of small-diameter emulsions will be discussed.

The Northside Storage Tunnel is a TBM driven rock tunnel system designed to collect and store sewage from four major storm overflow points along the existing Northern Suburbs Ocean Outfall Sewer. At present, sewage overflows during wet weather are the main source of pollution for Sydney Harbour. The tunnel system comprises a 16 km long by 3.8 m to 6.5 m diameter tunnel from Lane Cove to the North Head Sewage Treatment Plant and a 4 km long by 6.3 m diameter branch tunnel from West Chatswood. The tunnel will have a typical rock cover of about 50 m to 150 m. Most of the tunnel alignment is contained within the Hawkesbury Sandstone Formation which is generally an excellent tunnelling stratum, and offers few geotechnical constraints. However, the tunnel is required to pass beneath incised palaeochannels at Middle Harbour and Manly with each palaeochannel containing about 70 m of sediment.Innovative geotechnical and geophysical investigations were undertaken to examine the tunnel route and characterise the rock beneath the palaeochannels. These investigations have located zones of poor quality rock beneath one palaeochannel in particular, suggesting significant stress relief had taken place in the rock at times of lower sealevel producing structural features indicative of valley bulging. This paper presents the geotechnical model developed for the tunnel, and the models and constraints for tunnelling beneath the palaeochannels.

Due to the increasing demand for resources worldwide, efficient utilisation of raw material deposits and recycling technologies become more and more important. Growing industrial nations and increased living standards require a large raw material supply. Hereby responsible handling of existent primary and secondary raw materials is indispensable. By utilising state-of-the-art technologies resources are extracted, recovered and recycled more efficiently which increases sustainability. Hereby sensor technologies combined with intelligent data processing systems in particular provide a considerable research area. Innovative sensor technologies are already implemented during recognition of material-specific characteristics, during elemental recognition as well as during machine control. They are applied to attain increased automation levels of mining machineries, higher recoveries during mining and processing as well as higher recoveries. To be able to face the increased demand for sensor technologies and the integration into raw material industries, an interdisciplinary association of three RWTH Aachen University Institutes has been founded. The association has expertise on increasing productivity and capacity utilisations by automating mining and recovering processes by sensor technologies. Due to the utilisation of sensor systems, materials and structures can now be detected and elementary analysed on a real-time scale. The developed and enhanced techniques are the key for any ambition of autonomous plants and machineries. This paper gives an overview on the regarded sensor technologies for material recognition, machine automation and mineral processing. The authors present concepts based on extensive laboratory and field studies of successful implementation and application the technologies considering special mining conditions. Overall three applications are described to demonstrate the potential of sensor technologies for autonomous and sustainable mining: real-time analysis: recognition of elementary compounds during extraction processes; multi-sensor system EiControlPlus: designed for automation of longwall shearers by complete detection of the machineÆs environment; and sensor-based sorting: applied in recycling and mineralÆs industries.

The ore mined from the Lead Lode of The Zinc Corporation leases consists of a fairly granular mixture of galena, marmatite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and lollingite with a gangue association of calcite, quartz, bustamite, rhodonite, mangan-hedenbergite, garnet, fluorite, mangano-calcite and apatite. The silver content of the ore occurs in three minerals tetrahedrite, dyscrasite, and pyrargyrite, the last two mentioned occurring in microscopic association only. Other metallic and gangue minerals are also present in this complex mineralogical association, but do not influence the milling operations.Fortunately, the silver minerals favour the galena and chalcopyrite as their host minerals, thus facilitating the recovery of both copper and silver in the lead concentrate. The ore from the Lead Lode assays from 14 - 18 per cent lead; 3.0 - 4.5 oz silver per tonne, and 9.5 - 12.0 per cent zinc.A parallel lode, known as the Zinc Lode, is well developed in The Zinc Corporation leases. This lode assays from six to eight per cent lead, 1.5 oz silver per ton, 18 - 25 per cent zinc with a siliceous gangue. The common Lead Lode gangue minerals, calcite, rhodonite, bustamite - are very rare in present underground exposures. No metallurgical work was done on this ore during the pilot plant operations.The aim in the milling process is to produce:1. A lead concentrate with the maximum economic recovery of lead, silver, gold, copper and antimony, and minimum zinc content.2. A zinc concentrate with the maximum economic recovery of zinc, cadmium, and cobalt, and minimum iron, arsenic and fluorine content.3. A waste residue containing sufftcient granular material to be utilised as underground fill.In considering the economics of the milling practice the above three requirements plus consideration of the tariffs submitted by the purchasers of concentrates were the deciding factors in the evolution of the present milling practice.Towards the end of 1924 The Zinc Corporation Limited added to and adapted the old zinc tailings plant for the treatment of 5000 tons of crude ore per week. This plant, which operated until January 1936, was in general principles similar to the standard Broken Hill methods of ore concentration, whereby the galena was recovered by the gravity concentration methods of jigging and tabling with selective flotation concentration of the residual galena and marmatite. One important difference from other Broken Hill plants was that the primary grinding of the jig tailing was performed with flint-loaded mills operating in closed circuit with revolving screens. Two primary grinding sections were installed, each consisting of two 5 ft diameter by 10ft long tube mills loaded with flint pebbles working in closed circuit with four 3 ft diameter by 3 ft wide revolving screens covered with 22mesh Toncap woven wire screen with 0.57 mm opening. Each section carried a circulating load of 28.3 tons per hour for a jig.

All companies and individuals who embark on a business venture incur costs. For the most part these costs can be conveniently categorised, firstly into capital and operating costs and then into the various elements of these major cost centres. Although the nature of expenditure naturally differs as between industries certain broad cost types are characteristic of all heavy industries. The capital costs of gaining access to an orebody, equipping a new mine, building a treatment plant and perhaps refining and smelting facilities are likened to capital expenditure by a manufacturer on new plant and equipment required for an expansion or new product innovation. Similarly the day to day costs of labour and materials employed in the running of a mining operation can be likened to similar costs in other heavy industry. There is another group of costs that are not so easily categorised. Most industries incur unavoidable costs that do not form part of the direct or capital costs of physical production. These costs include taxes and other payments to government and research expenditure. The mining industry has a particularly heavy burden of non-production costs and it is the objective here to highlight and analyse a few of them. These costs are exploration expenditure, infrastructure expenditure, royalties and income tax. This is not to suggest that these are the only major non-production costs that the mining industry needs to bear. The industry may incur significant costs for environment protection, land tenure maintenance and on liaising with Government on a wide variety of matters. It is for reasons of subject manageability that the list is confined to the four costs mentioned. For the mining industry, exploration and infrastructure expenditure, royalties and income tax have several distinguishing features. Firstly, they are generally proportionately large costs. Exploration and infrastructure expenditure for example, could well exceed mine development costs. Depending on how royalties are levied, they may be very high in relation to profits earned and many in fact exceed profits. Secondly, except for income tax, they are costs that are generally not payable by other industries. Exploration expenditure is in some respects comparable with industrial research and development. However, because mines are wasting assets exploration is necessary for survival, and it is likely to form a larger part of costs per dollar of profits or sales than R&D. It can therefore be said that exploration is of far more significance to the miner than R&D is to the typical industrial company. Furthermore, unlike exploration expenditure, R&D results are transportable and patents permitting, transferable. The infrastructure burden that miners must carry is unique to the industry. Whereas urbanised industry is not usually liable for the capital cost of power, water, transport, townships and community facilities, the miner must finance these projects himself. Neither the payment of royalties, nor of course, income tax are unique to the mining industry. Royalties are more properly described as a unique charge on some primary industries but however described, they are a charge that manufacturing and service industries do not have to pay. Whilst we all pay income tax, the mining industry's uniqueness derives from the special problem that the industry has in arriving at annual net income in view of the capital intensity of the industry, partly due to expenditure on infrastructure, the indefinite life of capital equipment and its unpredictable residual value, funds expended on exploration and long lead times associated with a mine development. The third distinguishing feature of these costs is that, with the possible exception of exploration expenditure, they are heavily influenced by the policies and actions of Government. As such the industry has a responsibility to promote the industry by emphasising its potential to improve national product including exports and by requesting that the Government provide for the industry in its long term planning and seek its co-operation to prevent the industry incurring inequitable penalties relative to other industries.Finally, exploration and infrastructure expenditure are significant because they are front-end charges on a project. When due allowance is given the time value of money and the deferment of income from a mining development to which they relate, exploration and infrastructure expenditure assume greater importance than the raw money expenditure suggests. For all these reasons, exploration and infrastructure expenditure, mining royalties and mining income tax are worthy of detailed study. This is the purpose of this paper. The objective is to examine the determinants that give rise to them and provide some thoughts on their impact on on-going and potential mining developments and, where relevant, to make some suggestions as to how they may be minimised.

The resurgence of Silicosis and Coal Worker’s Pneumoconiosis (CWP) in coalmines has placed the spotlight back on the management of worker exposure to particulate matter across all mining sectors (Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis Select Committee, 2017). There already exists a substantial body of knowledge on particulate matter and its impacts upon human health (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, 2018). The contribution of silica to respiratory disease is well known. However, it is also clear that there are major gaps in our understanding. In part, those gaps relate to the contribution to adverse health effects of mineralogical constituents in the dust (LaBranche et al, 2021a). It is also becoming evident that the size and shape of the particulate matter can affect its potential impact on human health. The University of Queensland has developed a methodology for characterising respirable and inhalable dust samples using scanning electron microscopy. Multiple samples from numerous mining operations have already been analysed using the UQ methodology. The process has been successful in showing the variety of mineralogical components and particle size distributions present in various areas of the mines.

Regulators have an important role to play in fostering and enabling reliable, effective, environmental management. Given this, it is perhaps surprising that there has been relatively little debate on exactly how regulators can enhance their own approaches, in order to promote improved outcomes overall. The authors argue that applying research on High Reliability Organisations, as well as the University of Pennsylvania’s Penn Program Framework for Regulatory Excellence, to regulators has the potential to facilitate positive environmental results across the mine life cycle.

A reconstructed landscape may exert long-term influences on its surrounds and behave in ways that may not be predictable given uncertainties regarding climate, soil and vegetation interactions (Evans, 2000). In recent years, computer-based landscape evolution models (LEM) have been used to assess potential and existing mining landscapes and their long-term geomorphic behaviour (Hancock et al, 2007; Hancock, Lowry and Coulthard, 2015; Tucker and Hancock, 2010).In this paper, we focus on the evolution of post-mining landforms, which are designed to include burial or encapsulation of mine-impacted areas and materials, including tailings, drains, spoil tips and other industrial architecture (Figure 1). At the Ranger Uranium mine in the Northern Territory of Australia, low-grade uranium ore, tailings, brines and other mine wastes will be buried at depth in the areas of the former pits and tailings storage facilities.The use of LEMs to predict long-term landscape evolution has several issues. These include that model predictions are based on the calibration and parameterisation of the model carried out using values determined from present day, or recent surface conditions. Furthermore, there is also the question as to how subtle perturbations or roughness on the DEM surface can produce alternative model results by randomly varying the elevations of the DEM surface.In this study we examine the effect on sediment transport rates and geomorphology for a proposed rehabilitated landform using multiple landscape realisations with increasing magnitudes of random changes in the DEM using the SIBERIA LEM (Willgoose, Bras and Rodriguez-Iturbe, 1991).CITATION:Hancock, G R, Coulthard, T J and Lowry, J B C, 2016. Al ores arriving at the works which contain more than 3% sulphur, together with all sands and other fine residues, are delivered to the roasting department. Those that are in a coarse condition are first sent to the crushing plant, consisting of 15 in. x 9 in. jaw crushers and two No. 5 Krupp mills. The ore is here crushed through a quarter mesh screen. Any pyritic concentrates high in sulphur are given a preliminary roasting, to bring the sulphur contents down to about 12 % and the roasted material is delivered to the H. H. charge-making bins. Here the various ores, sands, residues, roasted pyrites, together with about 12 % of limestone, are made up into I-ton charges in hopper trucks with bottom discharge. The trucks are elevated by hydraulic lifts to a tramway running over the roasting furnaces, and the contents are dropped into hoppers over each furnace, from whence the mixture is fed into the centre of each furnace by means of a Challenge ore-feeder.

The following thesis is an outcome of an investigation undertaken by the writer, at the suggestion of Professor Skeats, of the dykes and associated auriferous reefs of the Walhalla-Wood's Point belt, with the view of determining what relation, if any, existed between the petrological nature and the extent of llietasomatic alteration undergone by the dykes, and the genesis and localization of the gold.Although the greater part of the writer's time in the field and laboratory was occupied in studying the dykes and auriferous occurrences, a study was also made of the general geology as a basis for the special investigation. In addition, it soon became evident in the field that secondary enrichment had played a marked part in re-concentrating the gold and some interesting data in this connection have been collected. For example, indubitable evidence has been found of nuggets of gold having been formed by secondary processes.
