Measuring cyanide in the leach liquors associated with high copper and/or sulfide ores is a non-trivial exercise. It is well known that copper complexes with cyanide and reduces the amount of cyanide available for gold leaching. What is not so well known is that the rhodanine end point overestimates the amount of cyanide available for leaching in the presence of copper. Sulfide ions also interfere with a rhodanine end point titration, although this is less of a problem as the black silver sulfide precipitate formed clearly indicates to the operator that something is wrong. Thiosulfate, which forms readily from the alkaline oxidation of sulfides, causes an overestimation of the cyanide available for leaching due to the formation of Ag(S2O3)-. The net result of these observations is that rhodanine is rarely of value as an end point indicator in complex solutions. It generally overestimates the amount of cyanide available, providing plant metallurgists with a false sense of security. Potentiometric titrations are generally much more capable of accurately measuring cyanide in complex solutions. The interfering effect of copper can be resolved and it is even possible to estimate the copper concentration using the inflexions associated with the titration of CN- + Cu(CN)43- versus Cu(CN)32-. Using the potentiometric method sulfide ions can be determined before the cyanide measurement is made due to the formation of AgS2, although the electrode will foul with repeated measurements. Thiosulfate can also be distinguished from cyanide with a potentiometric titration. Rhodanine and potentiometric titrations are both affected by the pH of the liquor. At pH 9.2 half the cyanide will be present as CN- and half as HCN(aq) with only the CN- being titratable. This does not hold in the presence of a buffer active around pH 9. In the presence of sufficient buffer, both the CN- and HCN(aq) are titrated. Ca(OH)+ may buffer the pH when large amounts of lime have been added.

Geotechnical design plays a key role in mine design. A proper geotechnical design provides a safe working environment and facilitates efficient mining operation. There are mainly three design approaches: (i) judgmental, based on observational and experiential facts, (ii) empirical, based on empirical design formulae; and (iii) analytical, incorporating numerical analysis. Most design applications are based on the design methods one and two as mentioned earlier. However, complexities arise in deep underground mining operations and deep open pit mines. These complexities and difficult geological environment introduce more uncertainties and simple empirical formulae would not be adequate as a design tool. These situations require numerical modelling and analysis of the design problems including interpretation of the results obtained from the analysis. There are several tools available for performing the numerical modelling and analysis. A brief review of the available tools is provided. The authors selected ANSYS (a general purpose finite element analysis tool) for use in mining geomechanics and geotechnical design. This paper includes several examples demonstrating the applicability of this software in designing mining structures. The authors hope that the design examples will demonstrate the use of the numerical modelling and analysis applications in excavation design.

Mechanical cleaning of coal was porforined in a few small plants in New South Wales from 1577 brit the first large coal washeries were built by Broken Hill Wbprietary Company Limited and Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Limited in the late 1940's. Mechanization of colleries in the 1950bs was abcomp" anied by construction of many coal washing plants and in the 1960's the growth of the coal export trade gave further impetus to the coal preparation industry. Design of coal preparation plants in Australia is modelled on practice overseas. Planning of a new plant in- volves investigation of many factors both technical and economic and the preparation of a specification by the operator for the designer's guidance. A wide range of preparation processes and equipment is on offer, but the nature of the coal to be treated and the separating efficiency desired usually dictate process selection. Simple or moderately difficult separation can be achieved with jigs, shaking tables or water washing cyclones. Coal which is difficult to treat or which has to be cut at a specific gravity lower than 1.5 is normally washed in a heavy medium process. In large plants it is usual to separate the coal into large, small and fine fractions and concentrate each fraction in a circuit designed to suit the grain size handled.

The Taharoa ironsand deposit is 1600 hectares in size and is located 144 km south of Auckland on the west coast of the North Island, New Zealand. The sand predominantly contains heavy mineral-rich sediments, quartz, and feldspars. One hundred and two samples were collected from all areas of the mine, from the stockpile, black sand areas, tailings and Te Akeake Sands. Samples were collected with the primary focus on the next predicted mining path and secondly on gaining a good geographic spread throughout the mine. All samples were analysed for the dry, wet and particle density, the porosity and the magnetic, non-magnetic and clay minerals content.Stockpile samples had an average magnetic mineral content of 92 percent. Dry, wet and particle density values for stockpile material exceed all values from untreated ironsand samples with average values of 2.8g/cm3, 2.9g/cm3 and 4.4g/cm3 respectively. Black sand samples from the mine came from various areas such as the central area, the forest, the southern area and the benches. All black sand samples are remarkably consistent, with dry and wet density values between 2.3 û 2.5g/cm3 and particle densities that range from 3.7 to 3.9g/cm3. The porosity values are comparable to all other areas of the mine (average 37 per cent). The tailings and Te Akeake Sands have different physical properties due to their different mineral contents. The dry, wet and particle densities are all lower than that of all other areas with averages of 2.1g/cm3, 2.2g/cm3 and 3.3g/cm3 respectively. These lower values reflect the lower magnetic mineral content (average 18 per cent) and the associated increase in non-magnetic mineral content (average 78 per cent).

One of the most frequently asked questions at the feasibility study stage of a project is, æhow big can one go?Æ This important question effects costing and efficiency of metallurgical equipment, the real estate required and the operating plant strategy.The presentation covers both engineering and process considerations and explains the limits that exist today and explores future trends.The paper is specific about large slurry application usually found in gold applications; however, it could apply to silver and uranium or other dense media leach duties.Agitator drive sizes are examined as well as process risks associated with large tank agitation. New technology has increased the maximum tank size and designers are now experienced in tank volumes in excess of 5000 m3. Tanks of 6000 m3 have been agitated and 10 000 m3 tanks are within present engineering know-how and scale-up.Fabrication techniques for shaft and impeller designs exceed the existing standards and new specifications will be needed to cover large mixer design. The paper covers certain aspects of mechanical design and proposes alternative standards that are more appropriate. Process considerations such as fluid natural frequency as well as typical superficial velocities for efficient operations are examined. Scale-up techniques based on existing and new technology are also examined to ensure a successful installation.The presentation therefore covers the majority of large mixer design questions that are frequently asked.

A major new mine to be developed at Pike River during 2005 has been designed to have a minimal impact upon the environment, and an overall net conservation gain. The Pike River Coalfield is located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand on the top of the Paparoa Range approximately 46 km north east of the coastal town of Greymouth. Pike River Coal Company Ltd (PRCC) holds a 40 year mining permit over the coalfield.   In October 2004, the Minister of Conservation granted PRCC access through 1.25 km of Department of Conservation land via an access agreement, and the Environment Court issued a number of consents for the development and operation of the mine, in addition to some existing consents.   The underground mine at Pike River is located under land administered by Department of Conservation, and has been designed to avoid or mitigate adverse environmental effects and integrate into the natural bush surroundings. The mine process has been designed to operate within an environmentally sensitive area and will incorporate technologically advanced methods of mining and processing. The mine process involves hydro mining of the coal, and transportation via a 12 km coal water slurry pipeline, to a dewatering complex located on PRCC land. This will ensure that traffic in the Pike River Catchment up to the mine is minimised.   An extensive series of management plans and monitoring programmes will be used to ensure that the environmental effects of the mine activities are minimised, by evaluating the performance of managerial procedures, and physical mechanisms in place to avoid or mitigate the effects. Trial mining and substance management plans in conjunction with an orthophoto and surface monitoring protocol will ensure that surface features, and water ways are protected from any adverse effects. The Blue Duck enhancement, and pest and predator control programme will help ensure that an overall net conservation gain is achieved.   Developing transparent working relationships and good communication with Department of Conservation, Iwi (Ngati Waewae and Ngai Tahu), and local environment groups has been and remains very important in the development of this project.

The perception of the mining industry in the Australian community has changed considerably over the last four decades. This has been partly brought about by changing values and expectations of the Australian community as well as by global factors. The legal environment for the Australian mining industry has undergone significant changes. Among them, the High Court's Mabo decision which confirmed native title rights as part of the common law and environmental legal developments are dealt with particularly. It is suggested that the Australian legal environment is not necessarily the prime cause for Australian mining companies taking their investment off shore. This is a summary on how native title impacts on land tenements and some of the major issues that emerged since the `Mabo decision' and the Native Title Act 1993 are discussed. Environmental legal developments have resulted in liability facing directors and senior management in compliance matters .and in operating mining and other businesses because of changes in community expectations. In the next decade it is suggested there will be many drivers for more changes in the legal environment. Some of these are touched on including the changing roles of the Commonwealth and State Governments, the High Court as -law-makers and the changing relationships with indigenous people in Australia and in overseas countries. The changing legal environment for mining demands a national approach in many areas on the proposition that resource based industries are part of a national industry. The uniform law approach among the States has been taking place but this needs to further. An appropriate task force should be forward to review the entire legal structure and regulations affecting mining on a national rather than a State basis . The mining industry will need to work with expectations of a changing community which have powerful, but sometimes contradictory, interest groups.

Over the past 18 months the De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd operations have made a concerted effort to move away from using the traditional shock tube initiating systems. These systems are being systematically replaced by the use of electronic delay detonators (EDD). Various trials were conducted in both host rock and kimberlite rock masses to improve tunnel advance as well as to optimise delay timing during trough openings (Ngoma et al, 1999; Mohle, 1999; Baltus, 2000). The high cost of EDDÆs, when compared with traditional initiation systems, led to a number of detailed studies being conducted on the mines where EDDÆs were being used. These studies aimed to quantify the additional benefits when blasting with electronic detonators. The studies showed that the change was justified on the basis of increased quality control and reliability gained through the use of EDDÆs. However, these benefits attract other related benefits, like fragmentation control, and backbreak reductions. When compared to the shock tube initiating systems the increased development face advance and the reduction of oversize during production blasting using EDDs, compared favourably to the less costly systems. As blasting engineers gained experience and confidence in the use of the system bigger blasts were initiated in mass under-cut blasts and slot raise development, by using multiple hole firing and second delay periods between holes. In the open pit and sublevel open stope mining methods the control of the fragmentation distribution and the effect of the mass of explosive detonated during a blast is detrimental to the loading and hauling production rates and the stability of the rock mass behind the blast. With a stable rock mass the bench cutting can be executed to establish steeper overall slope angles leading to large cost savings due to a reduction in waste stripping. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate through quantification that the use of the EDDs as an initiating system improves all-round blasting performances and assists in meeting customer requirements. Kumba Iron OreÆs Sishen Mine is one of the worldÆs largest iron ore mining operations situated in the Northern Cape, South Africa. It produces 29 million tonnes of iron ore products per annum using a dense medium separation (DMS) beneficiation process. Kumba is currently commissioning the Sishen Expansion Project (SEP) which will produce a further 13 Mtpa product through a jigging beneficiation process. The products from the Sishen Mine are highly sought after and consumed by domestic and various European and Asian customers. During beneficiation iron ore slimes are generated and discarded as waste material to the slimes dams. A study was initiated in 2005 to investigate processes to beneficiate these slimes to saleable products û prompted by the current high demand for iron ore products and the high grade in the Sishen slimes thickener underflow of approximately 54 per cent Fe. Initial laboratory scale test work indicated that a 66.5 per cent Fe iron ore concentrate could be produced from the Sishen slimes thickener underflow through a process of classification, two stage wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) and five stage flotation. This process, however, did not produce the desired results during pilot plant testing and numerous alternative process routes were investigated. The process that did achieve the desired product grade of 66.5 per cent Fe at economically feasible product yields consisted of two stage WHIMS using SLON magnetic separators. Results achieved indicate that the thickener underflow slimes can be upgraded from 54 per cent Fe to 66.5 per cent Fe at a product yield of ca. 40 per cent. Product yield could be increased through the further beneficiation of the SLON tails. The Sishen slimes thickener underflow production rate is ca. 3 Mtpa û resulting in a potential concentrate production of ca. 1.2 Mtpa. The slimes concentrate will be fed to a pelletising plant that will produce 66 per cent Fe pellets destined for domestic and or export markets.

Clays from the Santa Elena Peninsula, south-east of the Ecuador coast, were investigated with a view to identifying their main mineralogical, physical, chemical and textural characteristics as well as their potential for industrial use as adsorbents. Identified as calcic bentonites, two representative samples from the Tosagua Formation (Oligocene to Lower Miocene) were selected for acid activation trials. The selection criterion was based on the greatest amount of clay fraction (<2 ¦m fraction) associated with the greatest content of montmorillonite. For the activation treatments, HCl and H2SO4 solutions of 4, 6 and 8 N were used in a stirred glass reaction vessel with the clay sample under reflux during four hours at temperatures of 70¦C for HCl and 85¦C for H2SO4. Mineralogical analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD), chemical analysis by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), differential and gravimetric thermal analysis and measures of density, surface area and porosity indicated the changes occurred in the crystal structure of the montmorillonite. The acid treated clays were utilised in trials of purification and decolourisation of soybean vegetable oil in a ratio of 2:100 (clay/oil) at 90¦C for 30 min, under constant stirring. After centrifugation of the suspension, the wavelength of the bleached oil was measured by UV-visible spectrophotometer and the bleaching capacity of the clays was determined. The best bleaching capacity of the samples was obtained with 6 N H2SO4 acid-activated clays. The bleaching capacity was compared to Tonsil, a commercial acid-activated clay and similar results between them evidenced the potential industrial application of the Ecuadorian clays to bleaching of vegetable oil.

The Mount Lyell Company's concentrating mill is situated about a quarter of a mile westward of the portal of the North Lyell tunnel, which serves the North Lyell, Royal Tharsis and Crown Lyell mines, being on the 1100-ft. level of the first named. The Comstock mine is connected with the tram system at this level by five and a half miles of steam tramway, two-foot gauge being standard throughout.The plant is well placed with regard to all essential services and has an excellent water-supply from a series of three dams on the West Queen river.MILLING ORESThe mill feed is a mixture of the outputs from the foUr mines mentioned, each of which has its characteristic ore, but, generally speaking, about half of the ore consists of siliceous schists and the other half of hard grey quartzite. The schisty ores are easy to crush, but, on grinding, while the schist slimes readily, the quartz granules are hard, resulting in the handling of heavy loads on the secondary classifiers. The quartzite ores are both hard to crush and difficultto grind.The principal sulphide materials are bornite, chalcopyrite, and pyrite, chalcopyrite being the main copper-bearing mineral.The crystallization is coarse in the schisty ores, but it has been shown that even the 200 mesh (Tyler) material contains included sulphide particles. At the present time the sizing of the final tailing averages 80% through 200 mesh.

The FutureMine Collaborative Research Initiative has been successfully completed after three years of activity. The main objective of this initiative was to provide applications of research previously undertaken in the DeepMine initiative in terms of realistic solutions to problems facing gold mining operations as they reach for depths beyond 3500 m below surface. The FutureMine initiative was subdivided into four broad streams of technological expertise: rock engineering and seismicity; mining engineering and orebody management; software and communications and ventilation, cooling and refrigeration. This paper presents a summary of research output in this last area of expertise. Broadly, research in mine ventilation, cooling and refrigeration was directed in areas related to the recirculation of air, cyclical use of ventilation and cooling systems, air scrubbing technology, optimisation of chilled water reticulation, obtaining direct cooling at the workface, improving underground refrigeration systems through dry air-cooling and water heat rejection systems and a number of software simulation programs to be used in specific applications and as a tool assisting real-time monitoring of underground environmental conditions.This paper describes in broad terms the outcomes from this section of the research program and proposes ways in which some of these technologies may be combined synergistically in novel systems aimed at maintaining acceptable environmental conditions while reducing the impact on the profitability of operations.

IT is most remarkable and valuable property of mediurn and high carbon steels that they should be so susceptible to heat treatment, the wide range of variability in tenacity, ductility, etc, due to the normal influence of the carbon in the untreated material being enormously inereased thereby.The physical properties of steel and other metals are much more closely related to their structure than to their ultimate analysis.For instance, we may by chemical analysis determine the carbon content of a steel to be 0.5% ; but this information alone is insufficient to enable us to say what are the physical properties of the metal.Such a steel may possess 11 tensile strength of anything from 35 tons per sq. in., with much ductility, up to 80 tons per sq. in., with practically no ductility, according to its heat treatment. A microscopie examination, on the other hand, would show the structural composition of the steel, from which its physical properties could be approximately deduced. The inauguration of a geological department for the mines of North Broken Hill Limited necessitated the provision of accurate plans and sections upon which geological facts and projections might be plotted.Unfortunately, the basic data were very inadequate. For the British Section, sill survey plans were available, but no regular stope plans. Filling surveys had been preserved for many stopes, but on innumerable pieces of tracing linen, without heights of any kind, and not altogether reliable (as indicated by the finding of very inconsistent duplicates). For the bulk of the old stopes no plans exist at all. The expenditure of much time and patience has resulted in the co-ordination of most of the existing stope data, but the British Section must for the rest of its life continue to have surprises in store, as has been the case for many years past. Manufacture and preservation of stope records has, of course, been on a sound footing during recent years. No reliable cross-sections of the British Section were available.The Marsh, Junction, and Junction North Sections have for the most part very poor data. In the North Section, level plans were fairly reliable, and cross sections of the lode made for ore reserve purposes have been preserved for quite a few years. No floor plans of stopes were kept, however, until a couple of years ago.Diamond Drill records vary in quality. Practically none exist for the Junction and Junction North Sections. Groundwater geochemistry is controlled by chemical interactions with aquifer rocks, and offers a powerful geochemical exploration technique for locating concealed mineral- isation. Techniques are applied for identifying constituents of aquifers using the compositions of their groundwaters, collected from the surface through drill holes, water bores or springs. Even slowly moving groundwaters have passed through large volumes of rocks which surround any sample site. Products from these rock-water contacts modify the groundwater. By relating water composition to the minerals from which the dissolved species may have been derived, geochemical exploration information is obtained for a significantly larger zone than is represented by drill hole rock samples. In this paper we describe some solution chemical tech- niques we are applying in mineral exploration, particularly in areas of Australia where ground- waters are highly saline and contain enhanced concentrations of trace metals. EQUILIBRIUM MODELS FOR SALINE GROUNDWATERS Central to our technique is the assumption that in low rainfall regions, aquifer rocks and contained groundwaters are in chemical equili- brium. Solubility calculations then allow us to predict upper limits to the soluble products of groundwater interaction with aquifer rocks and to identify minerals with which the groundwater is saturated. Whilst equilibrium calculations require input of concentrations of all dissolved species, they are actually based on "activity" of dissolved species rather than the analysed concentrations. Unless waters have very low ionic strengths (a measure of total dissolved solids), activity of a solute is not equal to its analytical concentration but equals concentration multiplied by an "activity coefficent". Several methods exist for calculating mineral solubilities. The ion-association model, commonly used in programs such as WATEQ (Truesdell and Jones, 1974) and later deriv- atives such as MINTEQ, assume the formation of complex ions such as MgSO4(0), CaCl+, which are described by formation constants. Over the last 20 years the mining industry has played a key role in the further development of many Central Queensland and New South Wales communities. The number of people who are employed by the coal mining industry, the number of transient residents, shift work and the town facilities have all contributed to how the community views the coal mining industry. As the coal mining boom continues and the mining communities continue to grow more emphasis is needed to address the community concerns, specifically the socio-economic and environmental impacts that the coal mining companies may have on these communities. Central Queensland coal mining operations are situated in the Bowen Basin. Many of the towns in the region have been developed specifically for the coal mining industry with 13 - 50 per cent (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006) of people living in the communities being directly employed by the mines. The introduction of shift work, differing rosters and the mining boom have resulted in considerable changes to these communities with more transient contractors and permanent employees taking up residence outside of these communities. This change, however, has not been as noticeable in the Hunter Valley region. The Hunter Valley, situated in the Sydney Basin has two main mining towns, Singleton and Muswellbrook. Of the 37 173 (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006) people that reside in the communities 13.8 to 16.5 per cent (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006) are employed directly by the mines. The Hunter Valley is a large tourist destination due to its many vineyards; this results in a diverse community where mining is not the sole means of employment. Similar to Central Queensland the mining boom has brought more people to the Hunter Valley region, although greater percentages have taken up residence in the communities. The views vary between the two regions on the coal mining industry, specifically on the socio-economic and environmental impacts that the industry may have on the surrounding communities.

The common notion that the Box Hole Bore mineralization represents a variant of the Mississippi Valley type, has not been supported by the present investigation. Most of the common characteristics of Mississippi Valley type, namely 1. saturated saline brines; 2. low temperature domain; 3. mineralization in intraformational breccias and collapsed anticlinal structures; 4. hydrocarbon-rich or foetid carbonates, and 5. very simple geochemistry seem not to be applicable. The Box Hole Bore mineralization features: 1. moderately saline brines (18% NaCl); 2. very high temperature (495¦-520¦C) and low density brines, of critical vapour:water ratio and low pressure of formation (700 bars); 3. mineralization confined by faults and ex- tending laterally into carbonates of high pore volume such as stromatolitic dolo- mites; 4. ore environment characterized by oxidizing conditions, such as ferruginous carbonate and silica sands of high energy environment (heavy mineral banding) and 5. more complex geochemistry than is normal for Mississippi Valley type deposits (copper sulphosalts, and appreciable silver content). Additionally, the ore has un- usual textures formed by the replacement of carbonates and barite by large idiomorphic galena crystals. The pressure and temperature domains of the Box Hole Bore mineralization indicate post- Devonian emplacement and local high heat flow, possibly related to the Alice Springs Orogeny. Because of high lead and zinc trace element con- tents (100-600 ppm) of the carbonates, even out- side mineralized areas, it is possible that the mineralizing fluids have derived their metal con- tent from a local source, possibly aided by evap- oritic concentrations of the tidal to supratidal sequences. The new model for Box Hole Bore gives treater importance to the confining faults.

Sunburst PCF (Penetrating Cone Fracture) technology has recently undergone extensive underground field trials at Leinster Nickel Operations, Western Australia. Trials with the Sunburst machine started in September 1994 and continued through to December 1994 during which approximately 130 metres of tunnel were developed. The Sunburst technology was used to excavate sub-levels through ultramafic nickel ore for future sub-level caving operations at the Perseverance nickel mine. The Sunburst machine demonstrated reasonable instantaneous advance rates, however, there are still a number of future developments/design changes which need to be addressed prior to the PCF technology being trialed again in a production environment. This paper benchmarks conventional drill and blast at Leinster against the Sunburst Excavator machine performance within similar tunnel dimensions and rock conditions. In addition to productivity and cost information; environmental considerations, support and labour requirements are also discussed. Problems with the current machine design are highlighted and possible future design changes are suggested. The Sunburst machine could be a suitable technology for advancing development through weak to moderate rock conditions and may also reduce overall support costs. With the potential for automation and the ability to reduce rock damage into the development tunnel walls, it is proposed that the Sunburst machine warrants further consideration.

Ordinary kriging and non-linear geostatistical estimators are now well accepted methods in mining grade control and mine resource estimation. Kriging is also a necessary step in the most commonly used methods of conditional simulation used in the mining industry. In both kriging and conditional simulation, the search volume or ækriging neighbourhoodÆ is defined by the user. The definition of this search can have a very significant impact on the outcome of the kriging estimate or the quality of the conditioning of a simulation. In particular, a neighbourhood that is too restrictive can result in serious conditional biases. The methodology for quantitatively assessing the suitability of a kriging neighbourhood involves some simple tests (which we call æQuantified Kriging Neighbourhood AnalysisÆ or QKNA) that are well established in the geostatistical literature. The authors argue that QKNA is a mandatory step in setting up any kriging estimate, including one used for conditioning a simulation. Kriging is commonly described as a æminimum variance estimatorÆ but this is only true when the neighbourhood is properly defined. Arbitrary decisions about searches are highly risky, because the kriging weights are directly related to the variogram model, data geometry and block/sample support involved in the kriging. The criteria to look at when evaluating a particular kriging neighbourhood are the following: the slope of the regression of the ætrueÆ block grade on the æestimatedÆ block grade; the weight of the mean for a simple kriging; the distribution of kriging weights themselves (including the proportion of negative weights); and the kriging variance. Outside of the technical geostatistical literature, there is little in the published domain to describe the nature of QKNA and no practical presentation of case examples. In this paper we attempt to redress this by setting out the calculations required for QKNA and defining some approaches to interpreting the results. Several practical worked mining case examples are also given. Finally some comments are made on using the results of QKNA to assist with block size selection, choice of discretisation and mineral resource classification decisions.
