In the course of reviewing grade control practices at the Marvel Loch gold mine in Western Australia in 1992, FSSI Consultants developed and implemented a novel approach to ore selection using a method to maximise financial return (the MP method*). The approach was based on improved grade control sampling and an ore selection method which directly incorporates both a measure of the uncertainty in knowing the true grade of selection units in the definition of ore, as well as the operating cost and revenue parameters of the mining operation. During the past four years, FSSI Consultants have evaluated and refined the use of this approach and have implemented customised variations of the MP method at seven gold mines and a gold-copper mine in Australia. The previous methods of ore selection at most of these operations were based mainly on polygonal - sectional methods of grade estimation. At all of the sites where grade control optimisation has been given a fair trial over several months of production, the use of the MP method has been consistently rewarding to the mining operations. The benefits include increased run of mine ore stockpiles and low-grade stockpiles and decreased fluctuation in the production grade. Most operations have also benefited from a consistent ability to improve production grade through high-grading of the increased ore production. The increase in ore production has the logical benefit of reducing stripping ratios, increasing mine profitability and mine life.

A sample of pyritic gold concentrate was investigated by wet chemical and electron optical techniques. Sub-samples were roasted in a laboratory scale fluidized bed roaster in the temperature range 400-700¦C. The calcine was characterised, and cyanide-leached using a standard bottle rolling test. Gold extraction efficiencies varied with roasting temperature. At temperatures of 400 and 450¦C gold ex- tractions of less than 40% were achieved, but between 500-700¦C the extraction had increased to 93--98Z. The surface area of the calcine varied with roasting temperature, reaching a maximum at 500¦C. There was no correlation between the surface area of the calcine and the efficiency of gold extraction.

The prime requirement is market, which for NZ inevitably means overseas markets. In order to be internationally competitive, the economies of scale and mechanical handling are essential. Since significant markets have not been sought, the full extent of our industrial mineral potential is not known. In general the technology exists to impart the desired quality, but at a price. Price is the main constraint, which may confine truly competitive operations to coastal situations to avoid high internal freight charges. Some commercial deposits of construction materials are being sterilised by zoning, making the costs to the consumer and country unnecessarily high. Unless management is enlightened and marketing is forceful, it can restrict growth. There is a good case to mount a search for phosphate minerals. The main growth areas are likely to be direct shipping ores like limestone, silica sand, and olivine, but in particular pumice.

The electrochemistry of leaching gold with thiosulphate has been studied systematically by using electrochemical techniques. Results show that the current peak of anodic dissolution of gold occurs at about 50 mV(SCE) and there is passivation in the polarisation curve in the thiosulphate solution in the absence of ammonia. Ammonia markedly improves the anodic dissolution rate of gold and reduces the passivation as well as making the current peak shift negatively. Results also show that there is no current peak for a cathodic process in the range of 0 -900 mV(SCE) in the thiosulphate solution in the presence of oxygen but absence of cupric ions and ammonia. In the solution containing 0. 1 mol/L cupric-ammonia ions, the peak occurs at about -400 mV (SCE) and the cathodic process is characteristic of a catalytic reaction. Oxygen presents a predominate effect on the cathodic process. Based on the electrochemical investigation, the following mechanism of leaching gold with ammoniacal thiosulphate has been proposed. Ammonia reacts primarily with gold ions on th anodic surface of gold and the formed A (NH3)2+ rea~s then with S2O 3 in solution to form the stabler Au(S203) 2 . Cu (NHS) 4 gains electrons on the cathodic surface and is reduced to CU(N) ? which is then oxidised by oxygen and regenerated into Cu(NH3) 4 after entering the solution.

The mmmg operations carried out by North Broken Hill Limited, necessitate the use of four shafts for the haulage of ore, men, and supplies. These are:-1. Blackwood's Shaft.-British Section, which has 100 feet intervals between levels to the bottom 800 feet level plat;2. Thompson's Shaft.-British Section, which has 100 feet intervals between levels to the bottom 1400 feet level plat;3. No. 1 Shaft.-With intervals between levels:(a) 100 feet to the 800 feet level,(b) 150 feet from 800 feet level to the 1700 feet level;4. The development of a coal project must pass through a number of phases, taking it from a preliminary evaluation through to detailed mine planning. For each phase the cost of data acquisition and associated mining studies increases exponentially for linear improvement in confidence levels. Within each mine planning phase there are four main activities. These are the economic ordering of reserves, the development of optimum mining strategies, mine design and scheduling and finally the estimation and analysis of costs. The development of the optimum mining strategy is one of the most critical aspects of a mining evaluation and the application of economic criteria at this stage of the project is vital to the successful generation of an optimised mine design. A recommended method is the concept of Economic Ratio (ER) which expresses the likely cost of mining from a given location in a deposit in terms of the value of the product likely to be recovered. The most economic mining strategy will be to mine areas from low economic ratio to high economic ratio within the constraints of reasonable equipment application. When selecting equipment a particular machine should not be selected solely on comparison with other machines in isolation, but the total application must be analysed. In the final selection the decision should be based on whether or not it has a beneficial effect on overall project economics. The economic assessment must take into account the time value of money, so the real cost can be determined with adequate provision for capital and operating costs over different time spans.

The relationship between the process variables and hydrodynamics of a downflow concurrent column (Jameson cell) was investigated in both two and three-phase systems. Gas holdups from 10 to -60 per cent were obtained at gas rates up to 15 cm/s (STP), liquid (slurry) rates up to 25 cm/s, frother concentrations of 5 and 25 ppm, and slurry density (silica) up to 1.23 g/cm3 ina 3.8 cm diameter, 190 cm high column with a 0.5 cm diameter nozzle. Gas holdup decreases with feed rate and increases with gas rate, reaching a maximum (-60 per cent) at a gas rate to feed rate ratio of about one. Gas holdups were higher with slurry compared to water as feed. Stable operation was difficult to maintain at high gas rates especially with low frother dosage; operation was not possible without some frother. Instability was characterised by loss of pool level or formation of slugs. The slugs could move up or down or remain oscillatory. A quantitative relationship between the variables and gas holdup or onset of instability was not identified. Conductivity and pressure-based techniques were successfully tested on-line for estimation of gas holdup and to judge the state of operation (eg formation of slugs).

Electronic detonators bring a fundamental and radical change to the potential of rockbreaking operations. The immense technical challenge of safely merging electronic systems with explosives has been largely overcome, but a surprisingly difficult obstacle has been to convert users to the much more capable electronic systems, in routine as opposed to exotic applications. Unit cost is probably the main point of resistance. For years papers have confirmed significant improvements in blasting results, feeding through to enhanced bottom line value for the whole operation: much reduced environmental impact, and improved control over fragmentation, muckpile shape and overbreak. In Africa, a number of operations have been employing the technology for sufficient time to see enduring improvements in throughput, control and cost structure, and these improvements have fed through to the planning process: both the cost and the benefits are part of the plan. This has essentially rendered very unattractive the option of reverting to pyrotechnic systems and incurring the penalties previously unseen but now understood to be avoidable. Examples given are of improved throughput at opencast and underground mines, and greatly extended life at an urban quarry. The general experience of management in implementing the technology is that it over-delivers: adopted to solve one particular problem, significant other issues are also addressed. These extra benefits were quite logical, but not at all obvious prior to implementation. Exploring this reality is essential for harvesting the benefits of the technology sooner rather than later.

The Tregoora Gold Project is centred around the old Mitchell River Antimony Field located 100 kilometres west-northwest of Cairns, North Queensland. The project is currently the subject of a joint venture between Strategic Minerals Corporation N.L. and Hawk Investments Limited.Historical BackgroundThe Tregoora area was first prospected for antimony and gold around 1890. During the periods 1905 to 1914 and 1937 and 1944 approximately 100 tonnes of antimony and an unknown quantity of gold were won from a number of small mines the principal one being the "Retina". A strong increase in the demand for antimony in the early 1970's resulted in renewed exploration activity in the region and the re-development of the Retina Mine. Despite the intermittent interest in the region for antimony it was not until 1984 that the potential of the area for hosting gold resources was realised with the delineation by Strategic Minerals Corporation N.L. of a significant gold deposit now referred to as the Black Knight.

The wide application of computers in beneficiation plants has resulted in the creation of a number of complex automatic control systems at all stages of ore dressing processes. To create such systems it is necessary to solve complex problems of analysis and calculation. The application of computers to solve these problems demands development of simple and effective methods of investigation and simulation of ore dressing process dynamics because all the known methods are complicated in usage and cannot guarantee the desired accuracy and quality of process control. A new grapho-analytical method of investigation and calculation of ore dressing flow sheet dynamics, worked out by the authors of this paper, is based on proportion method development and is used to construct dynamic characteristics of the investigated processes. It is possible to use the given method for investigating benefication schemes with flotation machines having non-linear static characteristics and circulating loads. The suggested method of investigation of concentration flow sheet dynamics allows us to obtain dynamic characteristics of technological process parameters in both linear and non-linear systems. Moreover, the final result can be obtained without labour consuming analytical calculations by a simple graphical construction based on the static characteristics of the known equipment and processes.

Over the last five years Solid Energy New Zealand (SENZ) has gone through a series of changes in response to both external and internal factors. These changes have included corporate reorganisation and funding restructure, as well as modifications to medium and long term business objectives. The nature and size of its coal reserves and markets requires SENZ to continue developing new mines as existing mines are depleted. As well, there are opportunities to develop new mines as coal markets change or to realise value from existing coal resources. To assist in this process, a set of mine project assessment guidelines which are relevant to the size and scale of anticipated mine developments have been developed for SENZ. These project guidelines are structured to operate from the early stages of project or resource review through to final feasibility study stage. The guidelines provide both a basis for planning and budgeting, and a control mechanism within the company. They also enable clear understanding of the status of individual projects and provide a framework for comparison between projects. SENZ now has a defined method to plan, monitor and control this important aspect of its business. The paper explains the development and structure of the guidelines, as well as providing examples of their application. and use. It demonstrates how SENZ integrates its long term planning, five year planning, annual planning, project planning and risk management to maximise the value of individual projects, business units and the company overall in a consistent manner.

The writer had the pleasure of several months' laboratory tests on a metallurgical process for copper ores devised by Mr. W. H. Corbould, Consulting Engineer, North Queensland. Mr. Corbould's research work in this direction commenced somesix years ago, and he eventually succeeded in obtaining a good extraction of copper and a resulting solution practically free from iron and other impurities. The commercial operation of the process was investigated and special machines with novel features were designed. OUTLINE OF THE PROCESS.The process described in detail in the following pages, required for successful application that the ores contain at least the minimum ratio of sulphur to copper, consistent with the production of sulphadising roasting conditions.

A number of rehabilitated open cast coalmines in SA are already decanting. The paper focuses on the situation at one of these mines where the following information exist: monthly decant rates and rainfall; sulfate concentrations of the decanting water; water level measurements inside the mine prior to decanting; ABA analyses; information about the rehabilitation (drainage slope, vegetation, soil used). A 2D-model was constructed for the mine and calibrated against six years of flow data. About 85 per cent of the decant outflow rate comes from direct recharge on top of the rehabilitated mine while the other 15 per cent is derived from lateral groundwater inflows. The estimated recharge value was 17 per cent of the rainfall. Measured sulfate values showed that the sulfate generation rate for the mine was in the order of 7 kg/ha/d. Conclusions from the study are:most of the water decanting from rehabilitated open cast coal mines is derived from recharge via rainfall; given a specific sulfate generation rate, then: the lower the recharge the less the decant rate but the higher the sulfate concentration of the decanting water and vice versa; future prediction of the decant rate must be stochastic according to expected percentile monthly rainfall values; and as a first assessment of the predicted sulfate concentration of decant water from rehabilitated open case mines, the 7 kg/ha/d sulfate generation rate can be used.

Seven streams of a low tonnage pilot plant operation on Cu/Pb/Zn ore from the Golden Grove Project were continuously assayed using an AMDEL In-Stream Analysis (ISA) system. The ISA instrumentation is briefly described as is the calibration procedure employed. The successful application of this instrumentation in the dynamic environment of a pilot plant operation is discussed. The operational sequence of the Golden Grove pilot plant is outlined along with the original project objectives and how they were achieved by the implementation of ISA. Results for the different complex flowsheets used are discussed, followed by the perceived benefits of installing such equipment in this operation.

Author Biography William Poole was born in Sydney, NSW in August 1868. He was educated at Sydney Grammar School. William spent two and a half years as a cadet in the Railway Construction Branch of the NSW Department of Public Works doing office and field work. He then undertook a civil engineering course at Sydney University. Following this he was employed for six years as assistant and resident engineer at the Water Conservation Branch, NSW and was in responsible charge of various field operations, surveys, river gaugings and works of constructions including a large timber weir and also a concrete weir on the Macquarie River, NSW. He then undertook a mining and metallurgical course at Sydney University and became a graduate (BE) with honours in civil engineering, mining engineering and metallurgy. He then spent four and a half years with BHP Co, one and a half years at Broken Hill in the mining and concentration works and three years at the smelting works in Port Pirie, SA, in the latter case he was metallurgist and night superintendent and during that time had responsibility and control at night of the blast furnaces and, during the last 15 months, of the whole of these large works. The author left the Port Pirie, SA works to assume the position of Director of the State School of Mines at Charters Towers and had responsible control of the establishment and also lectured in mining, surveying and structure. The design and installation of a major on-line stores and purchasing system, with built-in maintenance reporting and plant register capabilities, needs more than just close attention to computer design details. When the system must be available almost 24 hours a day to a number of mine stores sites, and is used by a variety of mining staff including engineers and stores clerks, as well as by remote purchasing and office staff, then simplicity of use, availability, fast response times, and other human factors become vital. Critical aspects include easy to use screen design, involving a change from the traditional hierarchical menu system, and fallback and recovery to the last transaction. Business, people and systems objectives need to be established at the preliminary design stage, so that results can be measured and corrective action taken. The amount and type of user involvement and training, at all stages from initial design to systems tuning, has a major effect on people wanting to use the system. Active user participation in systems design, data definition and collection, and use of relevant training material is needed. Project management and design problems can arise in working with database oriented computer staff, and certain design features are found useful in ensuring a responsive, robust overall system.

Synthetic and commercial activated carbons are characterised for several chemical and physical properties. A range of techniques is used to establish correlations between physicochemical parameters and gold- adsorption activities. The most important parameter in the carbon activation process for a product with a high gold-adsorption activity is the activation temperature. High activation temperatures yield products with large micropore volumes which provides sites that are ideal in size for adsorption. The surface area of an activated carbon is not necessarily a good measure of its adsorption activity. Surface oxygen-containing functional groups are identified by Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry to be comprised mainly of ethers and hydroxyls. These functional groups line the edges of the micropores imparting a polar character to the pore and aid in the solvation of the adsorbate. Oxidants such as nitric acid result in a proliferation of surface carboxyl groups. resulting in a negatively- charged surface that is not conducive to the adsorption of gold.

Interest in mineral sand mining in the south west corner of Western Australia began in the late 1940's and significant production commenced in 1956. Early land use conflicts arose because of conservation implications (Ludlow tuart forest), expanded to include post-mining rehabilitation requirements (the Wonnerup mine near Busselton) and today include some agricultural/mining disputes. These latter conflicts are largely caused by the need for mining companies to secure longer-term reserves. To date, deposits containing mineral valued at A$440 million have been sterilized and are unlikely to become available in the future. There is additional pressure being placed on presently available reserves and a pessimistic picture could be drawn, whereby the southwest mineral sands industry ceases to exist by the year 2010. However, sensible land use planning, the support of policticians and the community, and responsible attitudes towards compensation and rehabilitation could, in combination, see the industry maintain significant mineral output until the middle of the 21st century. Examples of deposits sterilized by adverse land use will be given.
