The Greenvale Joint Venturers, Metals Exploration Queensland Pty. Ltd. and Freeport Queensland Nickel Incorporated, use ten Herreshoff roasters, for the reduction of ground lateritic nickel and cobalt containing ores.Initially the roasting section of the plant limited production, due to high down time.The use of technology developed and adapted over a number of years has achieved significant increase in on line time and a minimization of costs.

When mining of ilmenite deposits wet process of preparation is traditionally used. But this method needs large volume of water. The problem of water deficiency is characteristic of many regions of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The Satpayevskoye ilmenite deposit is situated in the East Kazakhstan, its location has problems with water, and the mineralogical composition of rock is unfavourable: rocks contain up to 40 per cent of clays. That is why designers made a decision to use dry process of preparation for processing of these ores. Offered scheme and equipment selection are presented in this paper.

Key technical and operational learnings since the first underground stope was filled are presented. Operation of a pilot heavy medium separation plant allows flexibility of operation not normally possible in an operating plant. Much useful data can be obtained, although some limitations apply. Projects carried out at AMDEL have included HMC separations at 1.5 to 3.6 specific gravity, comparative operation of HMC and DWP separators and the use of fine feed and product screens. Investigations of this type have provided a considerable amount of information on HMS plant performance and characteristics under a wide range of operating conditions.

Weinberg, born and educated in Germany, worked in'the American West for 10 years as a mining engineer and metallurgist. He was the first head of the Queensland Smelting Co. and from 1889 through 1915 was a prominent mining figure in Queensland. The author presents various procedures for the choice of dri-ving systems for mining, including the method of indeterminate Lagrange factors and linear programming.The possible application of the points-awarding method is demonstrated.It allows for taking into account both surd and commensurable characteristics of a driving system for mining. Also, the method of economic efficiency factors is outlined.All these methods make possible the best choice of a driving system, from the as-pect of electric energy saving. Two examples are given.

Stope control information at the C.S.A. mine is obtained by diamond drilling inclined holes from within the stapes. Practical mining outlines are determined from complicated ore contours by a joint mining engineering and geological study. Production holes to achieve this outline are individually marked up and checked. Stope control also extends to selective mucking of ore mixtures for metallurgical reasons and to marginal ore and waste mixtures for economic reasons.

Following plant trials in 1972 Mount Lyell installed an AMDEL On Stream Analysis system for measuring copper and density on the flot- ation feed and final plant tailing streams, in August 1973. As a result of poor performance of the final tailing system these probes were changed over to the rougher tailing stream, back to the final tailing stream and finally to the final copper concentrate stream where the system is currently performing satisfact- orily. The history of the development of the system to its current operational status is Described.

Arm Royalty systems of different types are used throughout Australia by both state and federal governments to raise revenue and thus facilitate in the proper distribution of mineral wealth. Royalty systems should be neutral and equitable but by their very nature these objectives are impossible to obtain. Because of the individual nature of mineral deposits, in particular variable cutoff grades and tonnages, governments should be aware of the possible trade off between short and long term gains of the particular royalty scheme introduced.
