Technological changes in Portland cement manufacturing during past years have reflected changes in the economics and availability of various types of fuel such as coal, fuel oil and natural gas. The industry consumes a sig- nificant quantity of both thermal and electric- al energy. The nature of the process and its chemical constraints does however permit the use of comparatively low grade fuels such as high ash coal and high sulphur oil. In striving for increased daily kiln outputs and conservation of energy, there is a worldwide trend towards the use of dry process plants. Wet process kilns of about 2 500 tonnes per day assume massive component sizes which present difficulties in manufacture, and transport to plant sites. Large capacity dry process units in excess of 8 000 tonnes per day are now in operation using precalcination techniques in which part of the fuel is introduced in the static preheater section ahead of the kiln while the balance is added to the kiln in a conventional manner. This technique has virtually doubled the potential output of any given single kiln.

Syferfontein Colliery, part of the Sasol group of companies which specialises in the field of petro-chemical production, was established in 1990. The mine is situated about 150 km east of Johannesburg, South Africa. Two coal seams are mined, utilising two 75 m3 draglines, shovels and a fleet of 177 ton rear dump trucks. The mine will reach its full production capacity of seven million tonnes per annum in 1992. During the planning period, prior to the establishment of the mine, management were confronted with the unstable socio-political environment in South Africa which could jeopardise the eventual success of the mine. They consequently conducted a strategic planning exercise to determine guidelines for mine planning to improve the chances of success in this unstable third world environment.The strategic guidelines formed the basis for specific actions taken during the planning and commissioning of the mine. Specific actions were taken in the field of operating cost, labour relations, working environment, logistics and the general environment. First results indicate that these actions have played a major role in the success of the mine to-date. This process can be utilised by others facing similar or even totally different uncertainties.

The Agnew Mine No. 1 Ventilation Shaft is the largest diameter shaft blind drilled in a hard rock mining environment. The selection of this method of shaft development was based on achieving an accelerated mine development and exploration programme. Drilling the shaft from a pre-sink depth of 73m commenced on March 22, 1982 and the shaft was stopped due to rig structural problems at a depth of 750m, 280m from the designed depth, on February 12, 1983, 137 days behind schedule. While problems with rig mechanical availability, cutter life and lost drilling tools in the hole hindered progress and escalated costs, penetration rates above prediction were achieved and both the speed and safety aspects of the method were well demonstrated.

Comparisons between individual SW Pacific Rim gold deposits have facilit-ated proposal of a new classification of porphyry-related mesothermal gold deposit types. Carbonate base-metal gold systems form at relatively high crustal levels, peripheral to porphyry intrusions. There is a spatial assoc-iation with major structures which focus fluids from degassing porphyries at depth. Milled matrix intrusive breccias and extrusive maar volcano/ diatreme breccias form as a result of pre-mineralisation phreatomagmatic eruptions. These focus degassing magmatic fluids by the provision of fracture ground preparation, typically within competent host rocks, adjacent to the breccia bodies. Local dilational structures control the form of individual deposits which may contain bonanza gold grades at sites of fluid quenching and/or repeated mineral deposition.Early quartz veining and porphyry-related alteration is common and later gold mineralisation typically occurs in association with carbonate veining and Fe and base metal sulphides as Zn > Pb > Cu. The progressive cooling by mixing of the upwelling mineralised magmatic fluid with descending bicarbonate waters, produces characteristic zonations in carbonate compositions. These vary with distance from the porphyry source, from Ca through Mg, Mn and distal Fe types. Gold mineralisation is preferentially distributed within the Mn/Mg carbon-ates.

The extraction of the values from gold bearing clay or clayey ores has always presented difficulties. A description of the successful operation of a mill working on material of this nature is here given in the hope that it will be of interest to mining engineers and metallurgists, particularly as the ore body referred to has been worked out. The methods finally adopted were evolved at the mill after the failure of 3: plant specially designed in England and sent out to New Guinea to cope with the clay by the old principle of calcining to brick followed by crushing and cyanidation. A description is given of the direct cyanidation of run of mine ore in '90 ton vats; which was finally adopted after a great deal of study and experiment. Mention is also made of the method of removing overburden in the open cut and the mining and transport of the ore from the open cut to the mill. The purpose of the paper is to record these matters while the information is still available. . .DESCRIPTION OF THE ORE BODYThe values occurred in a flat-lying lode which had slipped about half a mile down the mountain side and had come to rest in the nearly horizontal position in which it was found and worked. The thickness of the deposit varied from a maximum of about 25 ft. at the northern end to about 10 ft. at the southern end. The ore body was capped with an overburden of decomposed breccia and porphyry of variable thickness the maximum being about 65 ft. The underlying rock, or the footwaIJ of .the flat ore body was breccia locallyknown as blue breccia.

Mineralogical analysis of supergene sulphide ore recovered from areas close to the underground workings at the abandoned Mutooroo (South Australia) mine shows that the original sulphide minerals have undergone substantial alteration. The cause of this alteration is believed to be contact with the highly saline, acidic mine water. The copper is now present as a sulphide that can best be described as a copper- and iron-delicient chalcopyrite, CuxFeyS2, where in most cases x < y. The values of x and y vary from point-to-point within each grain.Leach tests under a variety of conditions show that dissolution of the copper from the supergene sulphide ore can be readily achieved, particularly when compared with the behaviour of Mt Isa chalcopyrite concentrate. For the supergene sulphide ore, an increase in the acidity and the iron(lll) concentration of the leachant re ults in an increase in the rate of copper dissolution.The results are briefly discussed in terms of the experimental in-situ leaching operation at Mutooroo, South Australia.

Perhaps no aspect of the investigation of an ore-deposit is of greater importance to the mining geologist and engineer than a consideration of its geological structure. A thorough understanding of the type, size, shape, and arrangement of any ore-body is essential to the proper conduct of exploratory, developmental, and mining, operations. Significant as these remarks are' in relationship to ore-deposits in general, they become of paramount moment when a complex structure such as the Broken Hill Lode is in question. In this connection the use of the term "lode" as applied to the Broken Hill ore-bodies may terid to confusion of ideas among those not familiar with the field or with the literature pertaining thereto, by reason of the fact that it is generally understood that a "lode" is characterised by simple, tabular form, regular outline, defined walls, and persistent attitude. However, as the terminology is well established by common usage, itsretention appears desirable, and, for the purpose of this paper, the name "The Broken Hill Lode" refers to that complex unit which includes pre-eminently the famous ore-bodies exposed in the workings from the North Mine on the one extreme to the South Blocks (Zinc Corporation) Mine on the other.That the practical value of geological investigation, of the ore-bodies was realised by the Geological Sub-Committee of the late Scientific Society of Broken Hill is attested by the...

Host minerals for gold have been of great interest to exploration geologists and metallurgists for a variety of reasons. The depletion of high grade ores in many parts of the world requires that greater attention be given to the study of host min-erals for gold. Some host minerals have been employed in exploration as traces for gold. They are also essential in the design of extraction processes for treating gold ores.This paper reviews the mineralogy of important gold deposits of Papua New Guinea (PNG), Indonesia and New Zealand and focuses attention on the ore minerals and rock-forming minerals that host gold.

Blast fragmentation can have a significant impact on the profitability of a mine. An optimum run of mine (ROM) size distribution is required to maximise the performance of downstream processes. If this fragmentation size distribution can be modelled and controlled, the operation will have made a significant advancement towards improving its performance. Blast fragmentation modelling is an important step in Mine to MillTM optimisation. It allows the estimation of blast fragmentation distributions for a number of different rock mass, blast geometry, and explosive parameters. These distributions can then be modelled in downstream mining and milling processes to determine the optimum blast design. When a blast hole is detonated rock breakage occurs in two different stress regions û compressive and tensile. In the first region, compressive stress waves form a æcrushed zoneÆ directly adjacent to the blast hole. The second region, termed the æcracked zoneÆ, occurs outside the crush one. The widely used Kuz-Ram model does not recognise these two blast regions. In the Kuz-Ram model the mean fragment size from the blast is approximated and is then used to estimate the remaining size distribution. Experience has shown that this model predicts the coarse end reasonably accurately, but it can significantly underestimate the amount of fines generated. As part of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P483A Mine to MillTM project, the Two-Component Model (TCM) and Crush Zone Model (CZM), developed by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC), were compared and evaluated to measured ROM fragmentation distributions. An important criteria for this comparison was the variation of model results from measured ROM in the fine to intermediate section (1 mm to 100 mm) of the fragmentation curve. This region of the distribution is important for Mine to MillTM optimisation. The comparison of modelled and Split ROM fragmentation distributions has been conducted in harder ores (UCS greater than 80 MPa). Further work involves modelling softer ores. The comparisons will be continued with future site surveys to increase confidence in the comparison of the CZM and TCM to Split results. Stochastic fragmentation modelling will then be conducted to take into account variation of input parameters. A window of possible fragmentation distributions can be compared to those obtained by Split. Following this work, an improved fragmentation model will be developed in response to these findings.

Contaminated sediments are a multinational problem. A crucial factor in solving an environmental problem is knowledge of, not only the amounts of polluted soil, the contaminants involved and their concentration, but also the historical background of the problem. Processing polluted soil is a tailor made activity based on rational decisions resulting from a detailed treatability study. Lack of information about characteristic properties of a specific sludge/pollution combination is the main obstacle in the route from first ascertaining that a particular harbour subsoil is polluted, to final identification of the full scale treatment plant. In the first instance, information must be generated regarding the distribution of pollutants in relation to the distribution of the original geophysical components. Based on this information rational decisions can be made on separation at a particular cutpoint and what sequential techniques should be involved for a certain fraction. For this purpose a `fingerprint method' is presented especially developed for investigation of polluted soil and sediments. The heart of the fingerprint method is a series of sequential hydrocyclone separations, by which a series of products is generated. The objective of the fingerprint method is to select an optimised treatment procedure in which the pollutants are concentrated in as small a volume of material as possible, leaving the bulk of the material clean. The pollutants can then readily be destroyed or isolated from the environment. The philosophy and advantages of the fingerprint method are demonstrated for a harbour sludge containing heavy metals as main pollutants. Hydrocyclone separation combined with flotation of both the coarse and fine fraction resulted in reusable and dischargeable products. Flotation of the fraction of fines was carried out by means of an experimental flotation cyclone enabling the selective recovery of mineral particles with diameters less than 10 microns. The overall conclusion is that design and engineering of treatment flow schemes for polluted dredged materials is a tailor made activity based on rational decisions resulting from the fingerprint information.

Geologists use large data sets and spend many hours and much computing time modelling the distribution of minerals throughout a rock mass. Significant investments in drilling, assaying and quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) are made before sophisticated geostatistical techniques are applied to the collected data. A large amount of research has been done in this field such that the ore control model is a reasonably accurate reflection of the mineral that is actually in the ground. However, after all this effort, the mining engineers then work just as diligently to blast the in situ rock mass to a particle size that can be efficiently handled and further reduced by downstream comminution processes. In open cut mines, this invariably requires large amounts of explosive energy that displaces the ore boundaries from where the geologists originally defined them. Failure to accurately account for blast movement will result in misclassification, whether that is ore to waste; low grade to high grade; sulfide to oxide; or other contaminates û collectively referred to as ore loss and dilution. The financial consequence of getting this wrong is substantial and not well quantified. This diminishes all of the good geological QA/QC done in defining the ore. This paper discusses various technologies used to physically measure blast-induced orebody movement and the difficulties in modelling this with a purely theoretical approach. Rock mass structure, blast energy, design and timing contours all have significant and interrelated effects on blast movement vectors. Measured blast movement has a large variance due to the uncertainly of many of the controlling parameters û arguably dominated by the heterogeneous nature of the rock mass. Although there have been significant advances in blast movement modelling capability in recent years, this unpredictable blast movement limits their use in the context of production ore control. Certainly, without physical field measurements, accurate predictions of movement are near impossible.Limitations of traditional surface markers in determining three-dimensional (3D) blast movement within the orebody are also reviewed, and advancements in accurately measuring these vectors within blasted ore discussed

This paper presents preliminary resu]ts from field studies which were conducted to establish, among other things. the influence of medium viscosity on the partitioning behaviour of dense medium cyclones and drums in mineral applications, using frrrosilicon- ba_sed media. The medium vicoosit.y- was measured on-line, and partitioning behaviour was determined using ore sampling and density t r acers . The results demonstrate that viscosity is an important. operating variable, influencing ,eparat.ing density and efficiency under certain conditions. The central Taupo Volcanic Zone is a region of intense Quaternary silicic volcanism accompanying rapid crustal extension. Modem central TVZ is the most frequently active and productive silicic volcanic system on Earth, erupting rhyolite at c. 0.28 m' s'. The rhyolites show no major compositional changes with time, but the total extent of magma chamber zonation has changed with the advent of rifting and crustal extension at c.0.7 Ma. At least 34 caldera-forming ignimbrite eruptions have formed a complex sequence of relatively short-lived, nested and/or overlapping volcanic centres in central TVZ. Taupo contrasts with other large silicic magmatic systems in the exceptionally high frequency, but small size, of caldera- forming eruptions. This contrast reflects the thin, rifted nature of the TVZ crust, that precludes the development of long- term magmatic cycles at Taupo.Within central TVZ, non-rhyolitic compositions have been erupted apparently irregularly in time and space; in particular there is no evidence for a geographic separation of basalts from andesites. TVZ is a rifted arc, but its segmented nature, high thermal flux and voluminous rhyolitic volcanism make it unique on Earth.

Gas velocity (Jg) measurements conducted close to the froth-pulp interface over the cross-section of a flotation cell reveal how efficiently the incoming air is being dispersed throughout the volume of the cell. Furthermore, measurements of Jg at deepest locations in the cell provide valuable information about air recirculation and dispersion conditions in the bulk volume of the cell. Gas velocity in flotation cells has predominantly been measured by a transient capture of gas in a graduated probe. In this project, a new sensor for measuring gas velocity in an on-line manner was developed. A probe is partially immersed in the flotation machine, below the froth-liquid interface. The probe is used to collect the rising air bubbles from the liquid phase. The liquid-froth interface is shifted into the probe under vacuum. A controlled vacuum is kept inside the probe. As air bubbles burst inside the probe, the excess of air is continuously removed from the probe via suction. The removed air is measured using a mass flow meter. The fully automated sensor allows us to continuously measure Jg at different location in a flotation machine. An experimental programme was carried out in a 10 cm diameter laboratory flotation column to determine the accuracy and repeatability of the automated sensor. The new sensor was used for evaluating gas dispersion conditions in a 215 litre transparent laboratory scale flotation cell. Gas velocity distributions along the radial and axial directions of the cell were measured over a wide range of operating conditions. The operating conditions in the cell were modified by altering impeller speed and air flow rate. Two different rotor-stator mechanisms were utilised to disperse the air in the cell, the MultiMix and the FreeFlow mechanism. In this paper, a description of the gas velocity sensor is given, and the results of the experimental work are discussed in detail.

The design of the reinforcement systems required to stabilise mine roadways has developed through the application of field measurement techniques. These techniques have allowed the level of security of a given opening to be determined from an assessment of the loading within the reinforcement, the extent of roof deformation and experience. The design systems developed are now used extensively in a wide variety of geological environment. Recent interpretative techniques have been developed to improve the level of confidence when designing roadway reinforcement. The techniques are particularly applicable for roadways subject to either weak materials or extreme stress levels. A second area of application is where roadway advance rates and hence the timing of reinforcement placement are critical. The newly developed techniques include both analytical and computational models. The validated computational techniques allow a more rational approach to investigation of the effect of varying reinforcement type, timing of placement and density on the level of stability achieved.

Carbothermic reduction of iron oxide is an attractive mechanism to produce metallic iron, since it can directly utilise coal as both reductant and fuel. To improve energy efficiency and productivity of the metallic iron production based on this mechanism, the combustion bed process packed with the composites of iron oxide and coal powder was experimentally evaluated. The process has a potential of high heat efficiency since it can automatically utilise the heat of reduced materials as that necessary to the subsequent reduction of the composite by a large heat exchange rate between the packed particles and gas flowed across the bed. However, it is hard to perfectly prevent the reoxidation of formed metallic iron in the bed. The present paper reports the effect of coal content, pellet size and so forth on the reduction/metallisation degrees of the samples after the reduction experiment. It also discusses the effect of pretreatment of the composite pellets using CaO bearing materials to suppress the reoxidation of formed metallic iron in the bed.

In the introduction to a recent paper dealing with, the relationships of magnetite and hematite in the banded iron formations or "jasper bars" of the Western Australian pre-Cambrian(17)t the author made a brief mention of these interesting rocks, of the principal series in which they occur and of a few of the rock and mineral types to be found within them.He drew attention to the essential shnilarity of these Western Australian banded iron formations to those of the pre-Cambrian of such other countries as the United States Lake Superior region, Sweden, South Russia, India, South Africa and Brazil, and gave a brief summary of his views as to the origin of the formations in Western Australia. Furthermore he stated that the banded iron formations have proved of considerable direct economic importance in the goldfields and other' regions of Western Australia, and he referred to the assistance they have provided the field geologist in geological mapping and the determination of geological structures.It is in elaboration of this last statement that the present paper has been written. In the following pages will be found some examples of the use to which the jasper bars have been put in the determination of the geological structure of critical areas in the goldfields of the State.Firstly, however, it may be as well to recapitulate the features of interest in these rocks. The true jasper bars or banded iron formations including the types jaspilite, banded hematite quartzite and banded magnetite quartzite or chert, together with their higher grade metamorphic derivatives such as banded magnetite-gruneri~ quartzites, magnetitegrunerite schists, fayalite ,and hedenbergite bearing handed magnetitegrunerite quartz rocks and' to 'a lesser extent magnetite-hypersthene grunerite quartz rocks, are abundant in the older series of the Western Australian pre-Cambrian. They are best developed in the older Greenstone or Kalgoorlie series of the goldfields districts, interbedded with metamorphosed basic lavas, tuffs and sediments. The mineralogy andpetrology of these rocks, the history of their metamorphism and their origin have been discusseq elsewhere in some detail by the author(19), (20). In one of the papers(20) it was clearly demonstrated that in the light of the true facts the old silicified shear zone theory of the origin of the jasper bars is quite untenable and that the formations undoubtedly represent sedimentary horizons as was recently pointed out by McKinstry(14).It has also been shown that banded ferruginous cherts, quartzites and cherty carbonate rocks of much lower metamorphic grade are well developed...

Since its formation in Papua New Guinea and raising of A$2 million in 1980, Niugini Mining Limited (NML) has grown to a company capitalised on the Australian Stock Exchange at about A$350 million. In 1995 the company produced some 237 000 ounces of gold, 700 000 ounces of silver and nearly 5000 tonnes of copper from its operations at Red Dome, in North Queensland and San Cristobal in The Atacama Desert of Northern Chile. This production contrasts with Niugini Mining's first mining venture at Mt Victor in the Eastern Highlands of PNG which yielded 20 000 ounces of gold and 11 600 of silver between 1987 and 1989. Following the formation of an exploration joint venture in 1982 with Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Ltd, now a subsidiary of RTZ, Niugini Mining's early recognition of the gold potential of volcanic rocks at plate margins led to discovery of the Lihir deposit in July 1982. This deposit containing about 42 million ounces of gold in resources, is one of the largest undeveloped gold deposits in the world. Following raising of equity funds through the float of Lihir Gold Ltd and debt finance in 1995, construction of the mine at a cost of US$673 million is now underway with first full-scale production at approximately 600 000 ounces of gold per year expected in early- 1998.

Mine to mill optimisation is not a recently developed concept. It is one which is finally gaining greater acceptance in the Australian mining industry, possibly as a consequence of the downturn in markets and certainly made possible by the development of tools and techniques to measure and predict performance of mining equipment and milling plants. Fragment size after blasting has a major bearing on the performance of all aspects of mining and a major influence on the economics of the mine and mill. The process to optimise fragmentation consists of identifying the key factors, measuring their sensitivity through a modelling and trialing program and conducting economic evaluations on the changes on both the mine and mill. Management of the Ernest Henry copper-gold mine in Northern Queensland, Australia, has espoused the mine-to-mill concept and is actively pursuing excellence in blasting to drive down the total cost of mining. Ernest Henry has extremely hard, wet and heavily jointed geological conditions, and had high powder factors and a large percentage of oversize material reporting to the crusher or ROM stockpile. A blasting improvement program was undertaken between Ernest Henry Mining, Thiess Contractors and Orica Explosives to optimise the ore size distribution, particularly the oversize component, as a step to reducing production costs. Measures of success included bringing the rock breaker back from double shifts to part-time operation and increasing direct dumping into the crusher from 70 per cent to 92 per cent. Tools and technologies to predict and measure the performance of individual blasts are needed before it is possible to optimise fragmentation or the downstream processes. These include such specialised Orica Explosives tools as SABREX, POWERSIEVE, and POWERLINE and commercially available drill monitors. As important are the more common still and video camera, borehole loggers, measuring tapes, surveying equipment such as face profilers, and a high speed camera if possible. There are many tools which can be applied however it is rarely necessary or possible to use all of them due to time constraints and a point of diminishing returns. The critical point is knowing what the true parameters of the blast were compared to design -only then can the predictive tools be effectively utilised. Stage one of the program has seen gradual improvement as the understanding grew and practices have been implemented resulting in reduced bridging in the crusher, geological mapping with respective blast designs and the oversize component under control. This paper is about a process approach which links tools and technology to understand the fragmentation drivers and then to optimising the size distribution. Ventilation challenges are often encountered when an underground mine expands to new zones and it often is the case to make a thorough review of the existing system and assess immediate and future airflow needs at the desired quantity and quality. An unexpected mine plan change that calls for increased development and production from new areas can impose a strain on the existing ventilation system. Budgetary constraints can also demand creativity in design on the mine ventilation engineerÆs part. Since the addition of several mining horizons it had become obvious at the Meikle mine that something had to be done to increase airflow quantity and quality in the old main zones because most of the ventilation resources had been channelled for development in the new mining horizons. An airflow assessment of the existing system had to be performed and it was determined that the airflow quantity had to be increased by at least 30 per cent and the quality of the air had to be improved by reducing nuisance and respirable dust and at the same time reducing the airflow temperature before it was used in a few mining zones. At the conclusion of the airflow assessment it was determined that a third centrifugal fan would be installed on a new 3.05 m diameter borehole from surface to underground. By a careful study of temperature conditions over time it was determined that an evaporative cooling spray chamber would be sufficient to cool the airflow down from the high dry bulb temperatures observed down to saturation at the wet bulb temperature. At the same time excessive nuisance dust generated as a result of the airflow travelling a long way in a haulage drift will be knocked down in the spray chamber resulting in cool, clean air in the mining districts. Expansion of the existing surface ammonia refrigeration plant was out of the question for several reasons. The fact that the airflow was hot and dry meant that evaporative cooling spray chambers could achieve lower working temperatures at a very low cost compared to the expansion of the chilled water plant. The expansion of the ventilation system at Meikle mine and the use of evaporative cooling spray chambers were demonstrated to be very successful and the information presented in this paper can be of benefit to other mines experiencing the same ventilation problems as was the case at the Meikle mine.
