The concentrator at Bougainville Copper Limited has an annual throughput of 48.2 million tonnes/year producing approximately 175,000 tonnes copper, 16.1 tonnes gold, and 50 tonnes silver. Conventional three stage crushing and screening are used to reduce run of mine ore to an average product d80 size of 6.7mm. The primary objective of the crush- ing plant is to provide a continuous supply of ore to the 12 primary grind- ing mills via an intermediate 300,000 tonnes capacity stockpile. Since ball mill performance improves with decreasing mill feed size, the crushing plant continually strives to produce the finest possible product for mill- ing. This has been achieved by increasing plant availability and total installed power, and improving crusher manganese liner life, screen cloth life, and plant operating practices. A recent innovation was the installa- tion of a 35 million tonnes/year preconcentration screening plant in Janu- ary 1987 to recover high grade fines from low grade run of mine ore types in which the mineralisation occurs preferentially along fracture planes in the parent rock.

The paper summarises the theoretical and experimental studies which led to the development of new industrial equipment designed to recover liberated gold from placer gravity concentrates. The new technology is based on environmentally clean magnetic methods, which avoids use of mercury in the production process and obtains higher gold recoveries compared to the amalgamation technique, and which can reach 98.6 - 99.5 per cent. The complex of equipment thus developed is now commercially used at nine Russian gold mining operations. Six more such complexes are due to come on stream in 1993, some of them outside the CIS. The new technology appears to hold much promise for the recovery of precious stones (diamonds, rubies etc) semi-precious stones (pyropes, chrysolites etc) and also artificial diamonds, for which case there are encouraging laboratory results.

Host-rock - wallrock major and trace element geochemistry associated with epithermal gold mineralisation in the Hauraki Goldfield of New Zealand is poorly documented, even though rock geochemistry is a recognised tool in exploration. Such responses assist in recognition of the regional scale imprint of fossil hydrothermal activity, and indicate targets for detailed evaluation within these alteration zones.Recent investigation of gold deposits in the Waihi (Gladstone), Golden Cross (Empire), Thames (Waiotahi) and Coromandel (Tokatea) areas indicate enrichments of Au, As and Sb in the andesitic wallrocks hosting mineralisation. Of the other elements examined, Si, K and Rb are enriched, and Na, Ca, and Sr are depleted at all deposits. These trends are best developed in the vicinity of veining. In deposits with clay alteration dominating (Waiotahi and Tokatea) there is also depletion of Mg, Mn, Zn and Cu. Ba and Cr are variably enriched or depleted within different styles of alteration. Base-metal enrichment in the wallrocks is not a feature of Hauraki deposits.

In south-eastern King Island, sediments and lavas of possible Upper Proterozoic to Lower Cambrian age have been intruded by Lower Carboniferous granitic rocks.Within the contact aureole of the Bold Head adamellite north of Grassy the sediments and lavas have been metamorphosed to hornblende hornfels facies grade. The thermal gradient within the contact aureole was small, as the hornfelses exhibit no mineral zoning over a distance of 700 ft from the adamellite.Skarns occur both within the adamellite near its contact with the country rocks, and within the country rocks as partial replacements of three dolomitic limestone horizons. The latter type, the exoskarns, commonly have an andradite-salite mineralogy and carry economic concentrations of scheelite. These resulted from the replacement of carbonate beds due to both diffusion and infiltration metasomatism. Silica, tungsten, minor sulphides, and water were introduced from the adamellite, while aluminium and iron diffused from the enclosing pelitic sediments. Calcium released during marble replacement countered the loss of iron and aluminium in the pelitic hornfelses transforming them to diopside-rich rocks.Endoskarns within the adamellite are the result of two way diffusion across the contact; calcium, aluminium, and iron diffused from sediment to adamellite as silica, potassium, sodium, and water diffused from adamellite to the sediments. From estimates of the lithostatic pressure and mole fraction of CO2, the mineral assemblages of the hornfelses imply that the temperature of metamorphism lay between 530° and 710°C. This temperature range is in good agreement with minimum temperatures, between 610° and 710°C, for the recrystallization of the marbles of the contact aureole, calculated from the determinations of the solid solution of the magnesite molecule in calcite.

Delay scatter, although widely recognised, has rarely been studied with the aim of critically reviewing blast designs. With current trends towards increased deck charging, and the effect on the number of separate delays in blast designs, delay scatter is shown to have a rather profound influence on the control of initiation sequence and the ability to successfully con- duct pre-splitting and smooth blasting. Determination of realistic delay scatter distributions is the first step towards application to blast design. Delay scatter must be evaluated in terms of deviation from the nominal time, not in terms of deviation from the batch mean, since the latter is not usually known without specific testing, requiring accurate timing instrumentation. Computer programs using Monte Carlo simulation can then be developed to investigate the probabilities of out-of-sequence initi- ation or near-simultaneous initiation within any specified interval. The procedures have been applied to both production and development blast designs in Australia and Chile to improve initiation sequence control and to rationalise and simplify blast designs.

Giving the keynote address in the final session of a conference dealing with closely related topics has a disadvantage in that much of what can be said has been said. It also has an advantage, however, because it presents the speaker with the opportunity to integrate and analyse the material presented by the various speakers. I would like to look to the near future in Aust- ralia and the United States of America, to the risks, problem areas, and changes of a rapidly evolving post-industrial era-an era we are begin- ning to experience where industry no longer `calls the tune'. We miners have been quick to point out and emphasize, that ours is a `high-risk' industry in the world of business and commerce. Yet, clearly those who have survived, and been successful, have learned to anticipate and cope with risk and change. This ability has been a distinguishing feature of the industry's leaders who, in market studies and commodity selection, exploration and development, mine planning, metallurgical pro- cessing, and general administration and operation 1. identify areas of risk or inevitable change, 2. analyse, test and quantify those factors of risk or change, and 3. design methods, systems, equipment to elim- inate, moderate, or control or economically compensate for predicted risks or changes.

Geometallurgical modelling is now a hot topic in deposit evaluation and in optimising mine performance; however, its history is long and varied. Historically metallurgical sampling has frequently suffered from a lack of data due to the cost of producing representative bulk samples. In the early 1990s geometallurgical modelling similarly suffered from a lack of data due to complex, time consuming and expensive sampling techniques. More recently, simple and relatively cheap tests for geometallurgical variables such as hardness, grindability, throughput, SAG power index, bond work index, crushing index, mineral recovery and concentrate grade have become widespread. The cheaper sampling has resulted in relatively large geometallurgical databases. However, most of the geometallurgical variables sampled are implicitly (and incorrectly) assumed to be additive when modelled by traditional geostatistical techniques, often leading to ill-informed and costly decisions. Geometallurgical variables are mostly non-additive so the current geostatistical challenge is to develop new approaches to dealing with this type of data. This paper briefly describes a historical case study of geometallurgical modelling of the George Fisher Pb-Zn mine completed in the mid 1990s, then outlines some of the current misconceptions of geometallurgical data and modelling techniques regularly applied to it, and finally discusses some recent developments in geometallurgical modelling, with examples from a number of current clients indicating the direction forward.

Following asmallnumberofpollutionincidents involving the death of cattle from ingestion of cyanide that had escaped from gold processing plants, the Queensland Government undertook to develop competent guidelines addressing this problem. These guidelines, "Queensland Government Guidelines on Prevention of Water Pollution from Cyanide Use in Gold Ore Processing", issued by the Department of Environment and Heritage, Department of Resource Industries and Water Resources Commission, cover hydrology and general house-keeping intended to reduce the likelihood of significant impact from a spill or unintentional dis- charge of contaminated material. There are three major advances for Queensland embodied in this Guideline: ò the use of a design approach that gives site specific standards rather than trying to give a multitude of standards broad enough to cover all situations, ò the use of hazard assessment and a "critical period" hydrologi- cal design technique, and ò new monitoring and reporting requirements. Pyrite, chalcopyrite and mixed sulfide samples, with and without quartz (5 wt per cent S), were subjected to column leaching to mimic natural weathering (cyclic wetting and drying). The pH and SO4 2- concentration of the column effluent was measured over a period of 78 weeks. The pH of the pyrite-only containing column rapidly decreased and remained under pH 4 after 12 weeks of leaching. The pH calculated assuming a 2:1 ratio of H + generation and SO4 2- release was slightly lower than that measured. However, a reduced H + to SO4 2- ratio of 1:1 is predicted if the release of aqueous Fe 2+ is assumed rather than the formation of Fe(OH)3. The pH of all columns containing only chalcopyrite or a 1:1 mole ratio of chalcopyrite and pyrite remained at or above pH 5 for the duration of the leach even though significant SO4 2- was released. One column containing the same initial surface area of pyrite and chalcopyrite but only approximately 0.10 the mole fraction of S as chalcopyrite maintained a pH of greater than five for the first 56 weeks of leaching and showed sporadic acid production thereafter. It is well established that oxidation of chalcopyrite results in a surface layer of polysulfide material. It is the formation of polysulfide that neutralises the acid produced on S oxidation through to SO4 2-. Hence where polysulfide formation occurs extensively on chalcopyrite the resulting solution pH decrease will be less than that based on SO4 2- production. The oxidation rate of sulfide minerals increases with decreasing pH and hence acid formation via sulfide oxidation to SO4 2- causes the subsequent oxidation rate to increase. The addition of calcite (CaCO3)to a pyrite column not only neutralises the acid formed but also decreases the rate of release of sulfate to solution by a factor of approximately 30. This is also the case where chalcopyrite is present mixed with pyrite. The rate of release of sulfate from the mixed sulfide mineral columns (after the initial release of the sulfate already present) was between one-fifth and one-tenth that in the absence of chalcopyrite.

Felspar occurs in association with quartz in the Broken Hill lode pegmatites and is brilliant green, greenish white, and white in colour. The pegmatites occur mainly in the walls in sporadic patches, parallel to the general dip of the ore deposit. The occurrences are of no economic value.Deposits of marketable felspar occur in pegmatite in a number of localities around Broken Hill, New South Wales.The majority of these are in the form of an irregular outcrop, usually of tapering length and depth. The maximum depth of any deposit yet worked in the district is about 40 ft. The felspar is occasionally contaminated by "blows" of quartz, mica and beryl, but the two latter are profitably marketable when separated.Felspars vary in colour from pink, through grey to snow white, and the colour is not indicative of the mineral content. The largest deposit at present being worked is the Egebeck quarry, about 14 miles south of Cockburn. It is a prominent outcrop, roughly circular and about 150 ft. in diameter, covered by one to three feet of overburden.The felspar is mainly massive, but contains some cleavage planes at approximately 90°. Intrusions of quartz and mica occur in patches, but the deposit appears likely to improve in size, regularity and quality below the present working floor.COMMERCIAL USES.Commercial felspars are mainly used in the ceramic industry, for which a high-grade potash felspar is required.The dental industry requires limited amounts of soda felspar with a very low Fe20s content. The processes that take place during the development of a heating are difficult to visualise. Bulk coal self-heating tests at The University of Queensland (UQ) using a two-metre column are providing graphic evidence of the stages that occur during a heating. Data obtained from these tests, both temperature and corresponding off-gas evolution can be transformed into what is effectively a video-replay of the heating event. This is achieved by loading both sets of data into a newly developed animation package called Hotspot. The resulting animation is ideal for spontaneous combustion training purposes as the viewer can readily identify the different hot spot stages and corresponding off-gas signatures. Colour coding of the coal temperature, as the hot spot forms, highlights its location in the coal pile and shows its ability to migrate upwind. An added benefit of the package is that once a mine has been tested in the UQ two-metre column, there is a permanent record of that particular coals performance for mine personnel to view.

Reduction of waste oxides from steel plant operations was investigated in a laboratory tube furnace at different temperatures and furnace atmospheres. The results have shown that the waste oxide pellets are reduced rapidly to very high degrees of metallization irrespective of the furnace atmosphere and that the reduction is simultaneously accompanied by significant low- ering of the original impurities. It is shown, for example, that treatment at 1000¦C for 30 min. can reduce the Zn content from 0.98% to 0.0065% and K and Na contents from 0.19% and 0.76% respectively, to less than 0.01%. However, pellet strength at 1000¦C was low but this, as shown in the paper, can be very significantly improved by treatment at 1250¦C. The results indicate that the reduction of the waste oxide pellets of this investigation proceeds almost certainly by a chain reaction mechanism and that this principle could be advantageously extended to the reduction of iron ores and other oxides in general.

Reclamation field trials commenced in 1985, two years before the granting of the Mining Licence. The level of pasture production on varying soil depths (0 cm, 5 cm, 15 cm and 25 cm) overlying both tailings and oxidised waste overburden was assessed. After seven years, the rate of increase of N, C, P and S, losses of S and P and pH changes were investigated on the plots where grass seed was sown into bare tailings. It was determined that on these plots it would take approximately 24 years to reach the original carbon and nitrogen levels at the mine site.

Past experience has shown that the automation of the dragline swing motion requires real time monitoring of the bucket position. A current project at the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) is aiming to achieve this using machine vision. The hardware platform is a Datacube MaxVideo 200 system. The images are obtained by a fixed camera installed on the dragline boom. The field of view is large enough to include the bucket in all possible configurations. Standard chain coding and run-length coding algorithms are used to process the video image. The three-dimensional bucket position is calculated by combining the output of the machine vision system with the rope length data obtained from transducers installed on drag and hoist drums. This information is then fed into a control computer which takes corrective action to suppress bucket oscillations before they reach dangerous levels.

Productivity of mines can be improved by taking fewer, but larger blasts. The initial blasts taken in starting a mining block are restricted by the low amount of void or space to fire into. Block cave mines are using a blasting technique to blast areas that have less than the normally accepted minimum void to establish drawbells for their orebody development. This technique used in block caving mines can be used to improve productivity in mining operations that utilise other mining methods. Some larger blasts have been done in mines, using open stoping methods, which have had void ratios as low as 13 per cent. This has been possible with the use of the explosive gases to transport the broken rock out of the area normally considered to be available to blasts. This trapping of the explosive gases in the broken rock has allowed rock to be moved over 30 m, horizontally, to allow for more void to be available in the blast area. This gives the necessary void ratio allowable to fire larger blasts. This paper will discuss the blasts where this technique has been used in mines to increase the tonnes fired in low void situations. It will also discuss where this type of blasting may improve the productivity of underground mines. Figure 1 shows the how explosive gases have enabled the broken rock to flow out of a draw point without the typical air blast and fly rock that would normally cause a rope suspended sign to be damaged beyond use.

The care necessary to ensure a reliable estimate of average value from the individual values of a series of bore holes sunk in any alluvial deposit containing coarse gold was well exemplified in checking over the mining returns from a previously bored deposit in Central Otago, N.Z. While the working returns are always liable to vary considerably from bore values in any particular sub-section of an area, still, over any considerable area, the two must check within small limits, if profits are to be calculated and capital raised on the average value given by boring.The present figures have probably more value than those from, dredge returns since accurate measurements are difficult to obtain in irregular water-filled dredge paddocks, whereas in the case under review the paddock walls stood almost perpendicular, and, as the measurements were taken and checked in the empty rectangular excavation, the yardage estimate may be taken as substantially exact.NATURE OF DEPOSITThe area consists of a narrow valley deposit of fluvio-glacial origin, the original deposit having been eroded and the gold reconcentrated by post glacial rivers. The wash is between 80 and 90 ft. deep, and is formed in two distinct layers:(i.) The top layer from surface to 70 ft. or 80 ft. consists of about equal quantities of gravel mixed with glacial drift, and a small amount of clay. The gravel is typical discoid glacial stone of a maximum size of about 4 in. diam. by 1 in. thick, and consists of soft micaceous schist and laminated slate. This upper layer of wash contains no coarse gold whatever, and very little fine; indeed, in mining, the top 30 ft. is discarded without being passed over the boxes.(ii.) The lower layer of wash to bedrock is similar to the upper, except iihat it contains about 10% of larger discoid stone up to 12 in. diam. by It in. thick; 90% of the gold is concentrated in this bottom layer.

Managers are demanding efficient use of their resources and part of this demand is leading to the idea of integrated audits for Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S), quality and the environment. It is possible to construct audits which test the compliance in this area with standards established by management systems and it may be that such an integrated audit of a site could reduce the time of auditing and be equally effective as three separate audits. However, this is only a maybe. To do an audit on all three aspects when they are not fully integrated results in more time wastage than doing three separate audits. But organisations are not structured around the audit process (some financial managers may query this statement). The organisational management systems are put in place to achieve the organisational goals - presumably in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

The association of graphite with a fine grained pyrite in the Mount Isa lead-zinc ore was investigated from mineralogical and metallurgical standpoints. The pyrite has been partially or completely replaced by galena and to a less extent by sphalerite, pyrrhotiteand chalcopyrite with the retention of graphite films or inclusions. During lead flotation the graphite imparts a spontaneous flotability to all associated minerals, resulting in a low grade fraction, which we call the carbonaceous fraction, floating with and diluting the lead concentrate. In times of low metal prices this fraction seriously reduces the economic value of the lead concentrate. A flotation procedure was developed to upgrade the carbonaceous fraction separately, producing an economic concentrate and a tailing.INTRODUCTIONThe lead concentrate produced from Mount Isa ores can vary from 20 to 50 per cent lead, depending on the locality in the mine from which the ore is obtained. Variations of this order are independent of ore grade and lead recovery. The large variation is related to the presence in the ore of a variable fast floating low grade fraction known locally as the carbonaceous fraction because of its association with graphite. During conventional lead flotation with sodium ethyl xanthate the carbonaceous fraction floats rapidly and unselectively with normal Mount Isa galena.The paper discusses mainly the examination and treatment of an average carbonaceous fraction, defined here as the fast floating material in the mill feed of late 1956. The Hellyer concentrator of Aberfoyle Limited commenced production in 1989 processing a fine grained, massive sulphide ore containing Zn, Pb, Ag, Cu and Au as values. Four concentrates are produced - copper/silver, lead, zinc and bulk (Pb/Zn) - with overall payable recoveries (1991) of 80 per cent Zn, 55 per cent Pb, 50 per cent Ag, 30 per cent Cu and ten per cent Au. Metallurgical development work commenced immediately after plant commissioning, and continues. The flotation response and liberation analysis on a size basis highlighted reagent balance problems associated with tower mill regrinding of sphalerite, poor conditioning of flotation pulps, poor selectivity for fine galena, and insufficient liberation. These were the main causes of values lost to tailings, values reporting to the 'wrong' concentrates and of impurities in the concentrates. Modifications to tower mill regrind circuit operation, and the use of improved conditioning techniques have greatly improved concentrator performance, particularly in the finer (-5 micron) size fractions. Studies of concentrator and laboratory flotation by size and liberation analysis are the basis of diagnostic metallurgy. The techniques used to evaluate the improved concentrator performance are discussed.
