Heap leaching for the recovery of precious metals is a comparatively new and rapidly expanding technology. The practical aspects of heap leaching are described and environmental and economic implications discussed.

Process control limitations have led to suboptimal performance of the crushing section of Sishen MineÆs Jig Plant. The performance of the PID (proportional-integral-derivative) controller implemented during commissioning was hampered by the relatively small buffer capacity between the crushers and screens. The inability to maintain the tertiary crushing chamber under full choke conditions lead to inefficient crushing and reduced crusher product cubicity.Model predictive control (MPC) was implemented in the tertiary crusher plant in May 2012 and resulted in a throughput improvement of six per cent in its first month. The controller was further optimised and indicated a throughput improvement of 16 per cent during on/off testing in July 2012. The throughput improvement is attributable to the finer crusher product resulting from operating the crusher under full choke conditions and controlled feed rate to the tertiary crusher plant screens. The next step is to couple the model predictive controller, automated gap control system and an economic optimiser to ensure maximised throughput and value from the resource.CITATION:Leeka, E K, 2013. This paper discusses the determination of the percentage of crystalline material in a natural silica deposit which would be considered harmful to health (<10 ¦m). A sample of the natural silica material was recovered and split into a number of subsamples. Samples were sieved using a conventional dry sieve to remove material >300 ¦m before testing. Particle size analyses of the fine fraction showed 75 per cent of the material was below 10 ¦m. Initially XRD and XPS were run on the samples to determine the minerals and composition of the sample. The XRD revealed strong quartz peaks and smaller tridymite peaks with a high amorphous background. The XPS indicated traces of iron, titanium and carbon with dominant silicon and oxygen peaks. The structure of the sample was investigated using the SEM. It was apparent that there were a number of larger quartz crystals (>30 ¦m) with a mix of amorphous and crystalline in the finer fraction. It was also observed that amorphous material was attached to the surface of the crystals. In order to determine the percentage of crystalline quartz a known amount of quartz was added to the sample incrementally. On each addition an XRD scan was performed and the area under the peaks recorded. Back analysis of these peaks with an assumed percentage of crystalline material in the original sample gave a crystalline content of 30 per cent. The quantity at the respirable fraction was estimated to be 18.7 per cent.

The Ross Goldfield is a unique gold resource. From its discovery in 1865 there was a growing understanding of the geology of the deposit as mining moved from the surface at Jones Flat in the south to underground extraction at Ross Flat further north. Multiple layers of gold-bearing gravels were penetrated in deep shafts and six rich gold-bearing bottoms were worked. The ultimate bottom on the Old Man Group gravel surface has never been reached either at Jones Flat or at Ross Flat. Mining at Ross Flat was ultimately halted by uncontrollable flooding, by escalating costs and by a shortage of labour during the First World War. Mining at Jones Flat recommenced in the late 1980s and attention has once again been drawn to the potential magnitude of the resource at Ross Flat. Research of historic literature shows that there is potential for a bulk gold grade of 400 mg/m3 in a volume of 82 million cubic metres of gravels which lie in a basin between Jones Flat and north Ross.

Differentiation of a basaltic (?) magma occurred in an active volcanic area during the late Miocene and Pliocene, and a change in the general mode of extrusion from fissure flow for the basalt to explosion for the andesite reflects an accompanying increasing magmatic viscosity. A caldera formed after the flow phase was completed and was filled with coarse agglomerate, much of which has a fused appearance. After an erosion interval its shape was modified and it became gradually deeper as repeated explosions from growing andesitic volcanoes caused large quantities of pyroclastic material to be deposited. At the close of this phase the floor abruptly collapsed when a, large block of the underlying crust was engulfed. The incompetent pyroclastics filling the caldera steepened in dip and the ensuing fractures were filled by the rising magma as dykes and sills and a chonolith formed below the caldera at a shallow depth. The ensuing activity reveals a further stage in differentiation and biotite is an important new ferromagnesian to be observed in the new rocks.Fracturing of the surrounding basalts was most intense in the rocks forming the periphery of the caldera where steeply and flatly dipping faults resulted from increasing horizontal pressure directed towards the caldera.Further differentiation resulted in the increased crystallization of orthoclase felspar, as evidenced by the numerous intrusives of trachy andesitic composition. Magmatic freezing caused mineralizers to accumulate at the top of the chonolith. These eventually escaped and auriferous pyrites, tellurides, quartz, and calcite were deposited in the surrounding rocks.The flatly dipping fractures are the most important and can be expected at various depths in a zone about 4,000 ft wide surrounding the caldera. Latest movement along these was controlled by magmatic consolidation rather than the shape of the caldera. Some flat faults were able to remain open during mineralization and acted as a feeder for the shallower fractures, thus limiting the depths to which the steeper dipping fractures were mineralized with the possible exception of one particular Nw.-striking lode (the Crown-Crescent).INTRODUCTIONThe gold deposits of the Tavua district were discovered in 1932 and from 1935 to June, 1961, 1,985,041 fine ounces of gold were produced from 4,202,504 tons of ore. On the more important mines it is almost essential to have a general plan of the surface. A special feature of this plan should be the indication thereon of a suitable arrangement of contour lines, either wholly over the surface of the property or at parts where may seem most useful. The importance of having these contours marked on the plan will be best appreciated by the engineer, in selecting the best available site for a proposed new plant, in locating a tramway, in connecting the surface with the underground workings to the best advantage, or in solving many similar problems that come within his province. The closer the contours are together vertically the better, the limitation being the trouble and expense of getting them on to the plan. They may range from five to fifty feet apart but a distance of ten feet will be found, in most cases, to be the most useful.In deciding the datum level from which these contours are to be measured, it is best to depart from the ordinary sea level datum, and use instead the highest available point on the property. This datum will be called zero and all levels will be reckoned so many feet below it; thus by a contour marked 160 on the plan, it will be understood that the level of the plane of the contour is 160 feet below the highest available point on the property. This system of measuring levels downward is readily suggested from measuring the depths of shafts from the brace or of excavations from the original surface.

Up until 1990 CoalCorp North Island's accident record was six times that considered acceptable in those NSW operations with good accident prevention programmes. This was an obvious avoidable burden on the company in both human and cost terms.   Late in 1989 an accident prevention programme was implemented with the objective of achieving a 50 per cent reduction in the lost time accident frequency rate within 12 months. The key to achieving this objective was recognised as being an attitude change in the total workforce from General Manager downward. Management commitment and action were seen to be critical to the success of the programme.   Through very basic and simple training programmes in accident investigation, analysis and reporting, communication, on-the-job coaching and in focusing on improving supervision skills, the original objective was achieved.   During 1991 the application of methods improvement and hazard recognition techniques are seen as the logical step to achieving a further 50 per cent reduction in the accident frequency rate.

Gold and Silver bearing epithermal veins of the Golden Cross deposit are hosted in Miocene and Pliocene calc-alkaline volcanics occurring 8 km northwest of Waihi at the southern extent of the Coromandel Peninsula, North Island, New Zealand. Veining occurred during a period of hydrothermal activity that began early to late Pliocene, and possibly continued into the Pleistocene.   Field relations and petrographic relationships reveal that multiple generations of FeS2 occur in the Golden Cross region, with FeS2 occurring in all nine rock types recognised at Golden Cross. The variability of FeS2 morphology was investigated by preparation of high purity FeS2 separates, and grain counting. Marcasite is the dominant FeS2 phase at Golden Cross, and along with pyrite is shown to have a systematic habit variation. Pyrite shows a sequence from cubes through octahedra to pyritohedra to dendritic growth. This pyrite sequence conforms to an experimentally determined sequence. The parallel sequence for marcasite at Golden Cross is from tabular through bladed aggregates to euhedral miscellaneous marcasite morphologies. The FeS2 sequences observed are believed to be due to increasing temperature, and perhaps also increasing FeS2-oversaturation and fluid flow.

It should be stating the æbleeding obviousÆ to say that the most efficient method of recovery must be used during the testing and evaluation phases of an orebody. Furthermore, the company will be literally throwing away money by not using the most efficient recovery plant during mining. This is especially true in the case of a low concentration/high value commodity such as diamonds. Unfortunately, this economic recovery criterion is not always the driving force. Some inexperienced companies think that they can preserve capital by using cheaper, and generally less efficient, recovery plants to mine their product. This philosophy is invariably a fallacy. Furthermore, it is also important to use the correct sized plant for the proposed task. It is no use trying to use a small testing plant to treat large quantities of ore, as this may result in loss of recovery efficiency. The converse is equally true.

Development of Underground Gold Processing Plants Underground gold processing plants have potential advantages over traditional surface installations related to a smaller environmental footprint, reduced capital and mining costs, improved security and increased value of the product delivered to surface. The concept of processing gold ores on the surface is the traditional paradigm. A process of pre-concentration of ore underground is likely to result in a major shift in operating costs. In particular, run of mine ore or a large proportion of it will not need to be transported to the surface. As a result, environmental and financial benefits are likely. Underground plants are likely to be pre-concentration systems where the process product is a high-grade concentrate and tailings for stope backfill. Units will be either static or modular. Concentration methods will be gravity and/or flotation or leach based. This paper discusses the development underground gold plants from early concept, through to the world's first operational unit, a newly commissioned unit and the technical basis of a fully modular system.

The presence of gold or tin in a particular place in payable quantities may be suspected from geological and prospE;cting reports. It behoves the engineer by judiciously spaced boreholes or pits to establish whether the place is exploitable with profit, and it is the purpose of this paper to set out the ways in which this is done. The various types of deposit to be considered occur in Malaya, Thafland and Borneo, in which countries the writer spent four years in estimating alluvials.The methods described were used in actual practice both by the writer and previous engineers for the same company. The subsequent exploitation of the alluvials evaluated by the methods given below shows that the recovery was as good as, and sometimes higher than, expected. No claims are made to the originality of the methods, but it is 'felt that they may be new to some engineers and< interesting to others contemplating alluvial testing.

Particles of a complex nickel sulphide concentrate (containing pyrite, pyrrhotite, pentIandite, and violarite as the major mineralogical constituents) were entrained in a stream of hot gas the temperature of which was varied from 500 to -1000°C. Chemical analysis of the particulates collected from the furnace was used to detect the rapid change in sulphur content which accompanied the ignition temperature jump. X-ray diffraction analysis was used to characterize the oxidized material.These techniques showed that ignition was dependent on the mineralogical composition and occurred over the temperature range 500-900°C. Pyrite ignited first in the range 500-600°C; pyrrhotite was the least reactivemineral and required temperatures in excess of 800°C for ignition. The nickel minerals <pentIandite and violarite decomposed before ignition and ignited at temperatures intermediate to those required for the pyrite and pyrrhotite. The ignition temperature for the pyrite was found to be independent of particle size and concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere.Ignition temperatures determined by the simulated flash smelting method were compared with the results of differential thermal analysis (DTA) measurements performed on the same concentrate. Temperaturesdetermined in the DTA test as corresponding to the start of exothermic activity were shown to be at least 100°C below those determined by the simulation test.

Flinders Mines is an iron ore explorer and developer with a tenement package located in the Hamersley Ranges region of Western Australia, approximately 70 km north of Tom Price. Exploration over the past five years has identified a Global Resource in excess of 900 Mt at a grade of 55.2 per cent Fe (+50 per cent Fe cut-off). This resource is spread across multiple deposits and has been divided into a number of mineralisation type domains. These domains are comprised of transported hematite rich detrital iron deposits (DID) and goethite dominant channel iron deposits (CID) as well as in situ bedded iron deposits (BID). The BID at PIOP is low in alumina and silica with a high calcined iron content making it an attractive exploration target. BID exploration techniques include a combination of mapping, structural analysis, downhole gamma logging and 3D geological modelling. Relationships identified between existing BID mineralisation, geology and structure has aided in targeting additional mineralisation across the tenement and highlighted other previously untested areas that warrant further investigation.CITATION:Tylkowski, L N, Corlis, N J, McDonald, G D, Petts, A E, Jennings, M F and Thomas, B J, 2013. To date, Anglo American Research Laboratories (AARL) has carried out several projects, based on the techniques developed in AMIRA International LimitedÆs (the mineral industries research association) AMIRA P9 project, to develop models for several Anglo Base Metals flotation plants. Further detailed analysis of the data which was generated has realised additional benefits: the various hydrodynamic measurements were useful in comparing cell operating parameters to literature sources, while the laboratory batch tests give an indication of plant recovery potential. A detailed cell by cell mass balance, which is a critical feature of the modelling process, is in its own right a valuable diagnostic tool. Several examples of how this can be used to highlight potential improvement areas in the plants are presented. The added understanding gained from sampling each cell is clear and this is shown to more than compensate for any necessary modifications needed to allow sampling to take place. The model fitting process generates an ore floatability distribution, which is used in the JK SimFloat simulation package to assess the effect of possible changes to each of the circuits. An example of an actual circuit change as a result of this approach is presented. The current limitations of and the potential improvements to the modelling process are also briefly discussed. Future models will be extended to include enhanced size and mineralogical information where the basic models suggest this has potential to improve understanding.

Olympic Dam has been investigating mine design options for the South Mine Area (SMA), which will continue using the existing sublevel open stoping (SLOS) method. The SMA is an undeveloped mining area, located south of the existing underground mining areas currently in production at Olympic Dam. The SMA study reached the stage where geotechnical inputs were required for stope design, infrastructure location and ground support forecasts. A large database of geotechnical data was collected to inform open pit designs for the ODX (Olympic Dam expansion) project (resulting from 659 drill holes). This geotechnical data has since been reprocessed to align with design inputs required for the SLOS mining method. The result has been the construction of a preliminary three-dimensional mining rock mass model (MRMM) that has been incorporated into preliminary stope mine design and infrastructure layout assessments, which have taken into account the predicted prevailing ground conditions.As with any model, it is necessary to improve the confidence in its predictability; therefore the model must be calibrated. The preliminary SMA MRMM was no exception. First pass calibration was possible with results from underground geotechnical window mapping from exposed rock mass conditions in the lateral development and surface geotechnical holes for ventilation shafts.The SMA project continues to advance and has started a program of resource drilling. Selected holes have been identified that target data limited areas. This will ensure that the data gaps are infilled in order to maintain the required data density required to improve the model confidence. In addition, further underground window mapping in the SMA will provide ‘mine scale drill hole’ data that can be used to either update the MRMM or as part of planned future calibration. Stope performance data from stopes will provide further valuable data for calibration purposes.The proposed paper will present the process and findings that have been followed in order to establish a well calibrated geotechnical model that can be used with an acceptable level of confidence in the ongoing refinements of the mine design and planning process for the SMA.CITATION:Thin, I, Morizzi, L, Mungur, G and Seymour, C, 2016. An integrated palynological and sedimentological investigation of four wells from the eastern margin of the Gippsland Basin has resulted in a scheme for classification of palynofacies in this area. Thirteen different palynofacies assemblages are recognised and assigned to particular environments based on the enclosing sediments, which range from alluvial, through coastal barrier to continental shelf environments. Close correlation is observed between the interpreted energy regime of the palynofacies assemblage, and that of the enclosing sediments. Assemblages characterised as reworking surfaces can be correlated with unconformity producing events (ie tectonic activity associated with the opening of the Tasman Sea), and some of the minor eustatic sea level Changes.

A detailed examination of carbonic acid leaching of crude iron-containing magnesia derived from Savage River magnesite shows that the rate and extent of magnesium and iron dissolution are affected by the slake time, leaching temperature, carbon dioxide pressure, pulp density and rate of agitation. In order to produce high-purity magnesia from the leachate by precipitation and calcination, the optimum leaching conditions, which are those that yield maximum magnesium and minimum iron dissolution, have to be a compromise in terms of the above parameters. For example, iron dissolution can be limited by leaching at an elevated temperature (-45°C), but because the maximum concentration of magnesium biearbonate decreases rapidly with an increase in temperature, it is necessary to use a low pulp density (-2 per cent solids) in order to achieve an acceptable degree of magnesium dissolution.Evidence is obtained that iron dissolution involves the formation of a soluble ferric bicarbonate complex that decomposes at elevated temperatures. The extent of iron dissolution is much higher than might be expected and it is probably because the original magnesite contains siderite in solid solution with the magnesite; on calcination, the hematite whieh is formed is in a very finely divided condition and hence more reactive.
