The Mount Isa Copper Concentrator was commissioned in 1973. In 1991, two autogenous grinding mills were installed replacing two stages of crushing, one stage of rod milling and one stage of primary ball milling. The cyclone overflow P80 of the secondary ball milling circuit was reduced to 120 microns due to the increased operating power in the AG/SAG mill circuits. A study of the mineralogy of the milled products and the plant flotation recovery indicated that the installed secondary grinding energy was more than what was required for adequate liberation of the chalcopyrite and half of it had potential for more effective use elsewhere. Halving the secondary grinding energy meant only one of the two secondary ball mills would be needed. The predicted saving in operating cost of one less ball mill was more than two million dollars per annum. This paper summarises various plant trials that were conducted in the Copper Concentrator to decommission one of the two secondary ball mills.

Mount Isa Mines Limited has 25 rod and ball mills of various sizes installed in two Concentrators at Mount Isa. A continuing investigation into installation, design and materials of liners for these mills has been in progress since the early sixties. Both manual and mechanical methods of liner installation are used and described. Materials for the various applications have been evaluated, mainly by field trials. Design of liners has also been evaluated by field trials and the history of trials in No.4 Concentrator is given. The purpose of the investigation has been to reduce the cost of mill lining and the life of many linings has been greatly increased as a result of this work.

For the purpose of this paper the Otago Region is that covered by the Otago Regional Council. This area, like other South Island Regions, has a river system starting in the Mountains and are all gravel bed rivers. The gravel from these rivers has been the major source of aggregate in the region since the development of the province began. The majority of the aggregate is a mix of greywacke, schist and quartz, which will be referred to later with its production problems. The region has been broken down into various areas.

The feed preparation section of the Whyalla iron ore pellet plant includes a screening and crushing plant followed by dry grinding mills. Improvements in the efficiency of the vibrating screen and cone crusher have enabled screening plant throughput to be increased and product size to be decreased. This, in turn, has enabled improvements in the grinding mills' operation.

The applicability of Bieniawski and Hoek-Brown empirical strength criteria has been assessed for different groups of coal and various types of intact rocks by using a vast number of published triaxial test data from various places. Analysis of individual data sets revealed that the traditional forms of the criteria do not have a perfect agreement with the data. A strong negative correlation has been observed between B in Bieniawski's criterion and m in Hoek and Brown's criterion with uniaxial compressive strength of materials. Both criteria have been modified and empirical relationships have been introduced for coal as follows:m = 62.903 - 34.213 (log pc) 0.9772B = 10.152 - 4.709 (log pc )0.8889Similar relationships have been developed for different rock types as well.A comparison between the applicability of each of the above approaches with the conventional criteria reveals a very significant advantage for new approaches and a supremacy for the Bieniawski criterion in all cases particularly in the case of coal.The modified Bieniawski criterion fits coal as well as different types of rocks with excellent accuracy.The modified Hoek-Brown criterion gives a good result for rocks but does not fit coal data quite well. In other words, Hoek-Brown criterion is not an suitable one for coal.

Over the last year at Clarabelle Mill, three circuit reconfigurations were implemented. One circuit reconfiguration, æA CleaningÆ, was initiated due to a furnace failure at the smelter complex, and two of the circuit reconfigurations, æincreased copper (Cu) separationÆ and the æInterim IsaMillÖ circuitÆ, were seen as opportunities to increase cash flow through the mill. A Cleaning and the Interim IsaMillÖ circuit took advantage of engineering design already completed for a major capital project. The engineering for each was modified, as needed, and construction of the required portions of the capital project was fast tracked. The increased Cu separation circuit change used existing test and plant equipment to increase the plant Cu concentrate production. Implementation of the projects required teams that included operations, maintenance, technical support, project management and capital project resources. This paper discusses the business reasons driving the changes and the forethought or synergies with other work, which made them a success, and what was learned through each project. The Southern Mines Rescue Station (S.M.R.S.) has been established for 55 years and in the past 15 years has had only 4 major call-outs. Whilst the mines rescue training program has continued to expand, the Station has become involved in other work which includes mine worker training and limited research. Notwithstanding, the prime role of the Mines Rescue Station has not been overlooked and the Station has only advanced with the many changes that have occurred in the coal industry. The Rescue Station activities are financed by contributions from Colliery proprietors and the aim of the S.M.R.S. Committee is to provide a service in which colliery management and mine workers will have a high degree of confidence.

Research activities to classify the quality of iron oxides have a long history but most of such activities are for the existing processes such as blast furnace or DR plant. Therefore the newly developed process, such as the COREX process, needs new standardisation although some basic functions of the new process have similarity to the existing processes. Many researchers (Hauk, 1990; Cho et al, 1998) in the field of COREX process have conducted investigations since the early stages of the process development and activities are underway for further plant optimisation. As Agrawal and Oshnock (1995) pointed out, because coke is not included in the COREX reduction shaft the strength requirement of the feed materials in COREX process will be more demanding than that in the blast furnace. This condition is similar to Midrex DR plant but the main reduction gas of COREX plant is carbon monoxide generated from coal combustion while that of Midrex DR plant is hydrogen from natural gas.

Under South Africanncoalmining conditions, in the majority of instances coal is won using the bord and pillar system without pillar extraction. Examples demonstrate that strata control policy has an effect on practically all aspects of mining: (1) the choice of mining method; ((2) degree of coal recovery; (3) effect on productivity; (L}.) integration of'-support techniques with other operations. This is confirmed by use of modern research results and computer simulation. Although the examples are drawn from South African experience, the conclusion is generally valid. Strata control problems cannot be solved in isolation but as an. integral part of overall mining policy.

In the first half of this century a mining industry was developed in Indonesia under Dutch colonial rule. World War II and the subsequent struggle for independence resulted in the destruction of most of the infras- tructure and much of the data. After independence, restrictions on for- eign investment and internal turmoil prevented re-establishment of a viable mining industry until the formation of the present Government after 1965 and the enactment of sound laws in 1967 to encourage foreign investment. Rebirth of the mining industry was followed initially by slow growth, but in the 1980's, spurred by the worldwide interest in gold, Indonesia has become the focus of an intense exploration boom for gold and other precious metals. 103 Contracts of Work for gold have been awarded since 1985 with Australian companies being the most predominant. Since 1985 three new gold operations have been commissioned and another two are nearing completion. Several more are undergoing feasi- bility studies. There is reason to predict that Indonesian gold produc- tion will grow to place the country in the ranks of significant producers during the 1990's.

The increasing demand for underground cooling in South African gold mines has resulted in various cooling methods being con- sidered, including the use of ice. Two main areas in connection with ice cooling systems are being investigated. The first concerns the efficient and cost effective production of ice on a larger scale than previously required for any other application. The so-called COMAT process provides a method for leaching low grade sulphide mattes in an acidic ferric sulphate medium in such a way that non ferrous base metals such as Ni,Cu and Co are substantially all dissolved; the concentration of residual acid and dissolved iron remaining in the leaching solution is low, and a large portion of the sulphide sulphur is converted to elemental sulphur. Thus the quantity of neutralising agents required to remove residual acid and dissolved iron from the leach solution prior to subsequent recovery of the dissolved base metals is greatly reduced. The leach residue and iron precip- itate report in a readily filterable form. In this paper results obtained on a pilot plant scale are presented for the leaching of a typical low grade matte in the manner describ- ed above; for the solvent extraction and elec- trowinning of copper, and for the removal of residual acid, copper and iron from the copper solvent extraction raffinate. Processes tested on a laboratory scale for the further recovery of cobalt and nickel by solvent extraction and electrowinning, and for the recovery of sulphuric acid and ammonium hydr- oxide from the dissolved ammonium sulphate salt contained in the final plant effluent, are also briefly described.

Dewatering tailing slurries by mechanical means is often not possible and gravity and solar driven processes must be used. It has been shown previously that better use of gravity is achieved when the tailing is drained as it settles. Not only are more compact sediments obtained but also the dewatering is faster. From the results of laboratory and field tests reported here, equations were established which describe the evaporation and drainage components of the dewatering. These equations were used to calculate the effects of ponding depth, solids content of the tailing and clim- atic conditions on the time required to dewater the tailing. Since the calculations can be made with and without the drainage component, the advantages to be gained with drainage can be determined. The tailing used in the work was a clay slime from a sand washing operation. However, it is anticipated that this approach will be applicable to other similar tailing.

In engineering applications of explosives for rock breaking, the released energy is expended mainly into heat, rock crushing and fracturing, seismic waves, air blast, and noise. Those parts of energy which pass into seismic waves and air wave create environmental problems since they are transmitted away from the blast site. In order to predict the environmental effects accurately, one must be able to predict the energy distribution at the source. The energy distribution at the source is significantly controlled by the blast constriction. Consequently, the accuracy of prediction and control of ground vibrations generated by blasting is affected by various matrices of blasting constriction.

This paper reports on the field results of using electronic detonators to improve blast outcomes. OricaÆs electronic detonator, the i-konTM Digital Energy Control System, allows exact and precise timing in 1 ms increments from 0 to 15 000 ms. This gives the blast engineer and shotfirer the ability to fire a blast using any possible desired sequence. In the three years that have followed the release of the i-konTM System, Orica has been re-exploring ways of initiating blasts using the abilities of electronic detonators to improve fragmentation, diggability and crusher throughput. This study began with revisiting fundamental blast theory, lead to generation of new state of the art computer fragmentation modelling and ended with many iterative field trials of i-konTM blasts across a wide selection of mining methods and rock types. At three sites a detailed measurement process was undertaken to compare the results of pyrotechnic blasts with i-konTM blasts. This paper will detail the significant improvements in fragmentation, diggability and crusher throughput that was found at these sites.

To carry out its responsibilities the SECV needs to manage the visual environment effectively. Every land oriented decision effects what we see and the value in pursuing visual excellence is supported by informed opinion, widespread community interest and evidence of cost- effectiveness.By knowing how we perceive the landscape and then changing or conserving it we can assist in fostering a positive mental image of a countyside which is welcomed by the local and regional community.It is useful to examine key design elements and the value we place on visual impressions in relation to three significant SECV rehabilitation projects, at Loy Yang, Newport and Morwell Open Cut.

The Australian Mining Industry Council (A.M.I.C.) was established in 1967 as a body to co-ordinate the interests of the mining industry on a nation-wide basis. Its member- ship now embraces the great majority of mining groups in Australia. One of A.M.I.C.'s major continuing functions since its formation has been to work with Governments towards the enactment of more effective and efficient mining legislation. Yet, over the period, the,overall position, if anything has deteriorated. The main reason for this was that because of the rapid succession of what appeared to be quite separate problems during the period there was never sufficient time for Govern- ments to take stock of a situation before it would be changed by a new set of circumstances. By early 1973, the Council was certain that most of the various questions raised were really part of the one overall land use problem and its work in this area thus took a new emphasis from that time. In discussing the Council's involvement with Australian mining legislation over the last six years, the paper helps to clarify the present situation.
