Most mineral products exported from Australia to Japan, with the notable exception of coal, are purchased with weight and quality determined on discharge. Sampling of imported minerals for purpose of payment is done at facilities owned and operated by the purchaser. The selling shipper is represented at the weighing, sampling and testing by an independent inspection group who supervises the whole procedure. Sampling and testing are done within the provisions of the contract between the two parties, and normally in accordance with the relevant Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS). These JIS specify such things as the number and mass of increments to be taken; the practice of taking these increments; the method of determination of moisture, size distribution and quality. The JIS concerned with sampling however, are meant to be basic guides rather than rigid rules. Hence sampling and testing practice varies from plant to plant. In general Japanese sampling facilities and methods are elaborate and efficient. Opportunity is given for the discussion of varying technical viewpoints between consumer and shipper. However the resolution of differences and the implementation of changes normally takes a long time. Risk and uncertainty are attached to mining projects, and making decisions, hedging, future investment and evaluation of mining projects depend on forecasting the future price. The future technologic developments in mining will be primarily influenced by the future commodity prices. A few approaches, with different confidences are proposed to predict price movement in the future. This research introduces a new comprehensive version of the mean reverting jump diffusion model for natural-resource commodity prices. The novel model proposes that the historical data of mineral commodities have three terms to demonstrate fluctuation of prices: mean reversion component, diffusion component and jump component. The model calculates each term individually to compute the future prices of mineral commodities. Subsequently, in the second section of the paper, the model is implemented for monthly historical data of gold price from January 1968 to May 2008. This research is investigating the relationship between the historical oil price and inflation with the gold price. This is followed by a future estimation of gold price fluctuations up to 2018. The results from the application of this new method are discussed in the context of how they accurately replicate the historical gold price and how they can predict the future gold price.

Coal has been mined in New South Wales for nearly 200 years and prior to 1970 the vast majority of this coal was mined from underground mines using bord and pillar or similar systems.Since 1970 there have been two notable changes in coal production trends in New South Wales as can be seen from Figure 1.1. The steady growth in coal mined by open cut methods. Open cut output grew from about seven per cent of the State's output in 1970/71 to 43 per cent in 1990/91.2. The steady growth in coal mined by the longwall method. longwall output grew from negligible amounts in 1970/71 to 48 per cent of underground production in 1990/91. mines operating longwall units produced 61 per cent of underground production in 1990/91.

The relevance of borehole and bore core evaluation to the design of underground coal mines is illustrated by considering the technical parameters of colliery design and the information from which they are constructed. The nature of this information is described, together with some methods for its storage, processing and presentation. Geophysical exploration techniques are compared as information sources. It is concluded that borehole and bore core evaluation is relevant and necessary for colliery design, but that optimum results will be obtained if drilling can be combined with geophysical techniques. Because of the inherent uncertainties in prediction of mining conditions the necessity of obtaining as much information as practicable from drilling evaluation is also stressed.

Copper concentrate from Bougainville's copper mine located on the west slope of the Crown Prince Range on Bougainville island, is pumped 27 km to the filter and drying plant at Anewa Bay for preparation and storage prior to shipment to overseas customers. As modern techniques of Petroleum Exploration and Development are rela-tively new in Australia,2 the alien terms "Mud Logging" and "Core Analysis" will bear explanation. Mud Logging and Core Analysis are two of the Petroleum. Industryts most useful "tools" in the successful search for, and development of, commercial oil and gas deposits. Modern Mud Logging could be more accu-xately termed "Drill Cuttings and Mud Gas Analysis". Presently, mud-logging has its greatest application in exploratory wells where subsurface geologic control is at a-minimum.

The Golden Cross is the first large precious metals mine to be both commissioned and closed in the æmodernÆ era in New Zealand. This paper discusses the life cycle of the Golden Cross mine, with emphasis on the closure process and post closure management.   The closure process has generally been very well managed, and successful, but in spite of that some on-going issues remain unresolved. Nearly nine years after the end of mining the mine owners are still actively managing the site, with no immediate end to that in sight.   The site has been described as atypical, due to the identification of a deep seated landslide below the tailings and waste rock storage facilities. However that should not be given too much emphasis when addressing the overall closure and post-closure management issues, which could well apply to other existing and future mine sites in New Zealand.   The Golden Cross can provide valuable lessons for other miners, and the issues arising at this site should be watched closely by the industry as a whole.

Territory Iron has seen fit to revive the old Frances Creek iron ore mine some 30 years after it ceased operations in AustraliaÆs Northern Territory. The key to this revival has been the changes that have happened since market forces, infrastructure limitations and a cyclone combined to force its closure. As it breathes life into this old mine, the Company is serious about its responsibilities to its shareholders, to its workers, to local and regional communities and to the environment. This paper addresses how Territory Iron has approached technical, operational and regulatory issues that apply in Australia. Some insight may be gained into the myriad of tasks that mining companies face to revitalise an old mine. These tasks vary from employing the latest exploration tools, best practice drilling, sampling and modelling of orebodies, optimisation of pit designs and schedules, maximising product value by blending, optimising infrastructure usage and minimising capital and operating costs. All of this has to take cognisance of commercial, environmental and other issues including Native Title.

The crushing and concentration of ores, as Herbert Hoover commented in a footnote in De Re Metallica, stretches back at least 6000 years. During those years there have been continuing changes and improvements in mineral processing technology. It has expanded greatly in its ability to handle different types of minerals, and lower grade and more complex ores. Australia will be dependent on the mineral industry for the fore- seeable future and there will be continuing demands on the mill opera- tors to improve the technology with regard to efficiency, flexibility and costs. These demands will be met successfully in the future as they have been in the past. This Mill Operators' Conference is an important forum for assessing our present position and planning for the future.

The estimation of particle liberation is important in the study of mineral concentration. With simple systems, where the densities of the components are low, the liberation can be studied directly by density fractionation. For most practical systems, and particularly for the dense, complex sulphides, the only method known is by measurement in polished section. There are two major difficulties with such measurements. Firstly, the measurements themselves are difficult and considerable care is needed before reproducible results can be achieved. Secondly, a well known stereological problem arises which gives the estimates an inherent bias. The paper discusses both aspects of the problem. The practical features of measurement are treated in detail and a method described which has been developed and proven to give reproducible estimates of the liberation in the section. This discussion relates to automated measurements by QEM*SEM and presents a way of estimating the confidence limits within which measurements lie. Comparisons are shown between measurements made by the traditional manual optical technique and automated equipment. Stereological reconstruction is also discussed briefly. Several methods have been presented in the literature but all are complex and none is yet widely accepted. Area measurements are less biased than linear estimates so a practical approach is to use area measurements in uncorrected form. The topic is still being actively researched so it is expected that one method will soon emerge as the standard technique.

Subaqueous water-rock reactions that occur at the pit wall/lake water interface can affect the pH of pit lakes. Many pit lake water chemistry models neglect subaqueous reactions, which may create inaccurate predictions over time. A mineral quantification method is presented that defines the wall rock mineralogy of active open pit mines, using samples collected from the Martha Mine, a low-sulfidation epithermal Au-Ag deposit in Waihi, New Zealand. The mineral quantification method has five components: field observations and sampling, X-ray diffraction analyses, selection of representative samples, geochemical analyses, and mineral accounting. Predicted mineral concentrations closely match observed mineral concentrations visually estimated using petrographic techniques. Results of the method can be incorporated into a geochemical model of long-range pit lake water quality resulting from subaqueous water-rock reactions.

The laws of detonation wave velocity variation in propagation process along the charge under channel influence are investigated widely in this paper. The result is obtained by blasting experiments. Bore hole is simulated by plastic tube or steel pipe (with outer diameter 45 nun, inner diameter 40 or 41 mm). Blasting experiment is carried out with a cylindrical charge of 32 mm diameter. The author analyses the characteristics of energy distribution along the charge under above-mentioned conditions. Reasonable initiating position and initiating direction are also analysed. A double-direction initiating method which consists of several initiating charges is put forward. The blasting effect of this initiating method when used in underground mining is stated out.

In Australia and New Zealand, the 'Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves', which was released by industry in 1989, is operating successfully in a co-operative approach between industry and regulatory authorities. Similar codes or guidelines exist or are under development in the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom and South Africa, although the regulatory backing given to the Australasian Code is unique. International standard definitions for Mineral Resources and Reserves, and for categories of Resources and Reserves, have been under development by the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions since 1994 and have already stimulated considerable convergence of definitions and reporting standards in participating countries. It is hoped that agreement on this international standard for public reporting by mining companies will be reached within the next two years, and it is expected that adoption of the standard will result in a higher and more uniform quality of reporting worldwide, with a consequently greater interest on the part of the general public and financiers in investing in the mining industry.

Reverse circulation (R.C.) drilling or the dual tube method as it is quite commonly known, has a unique place in conventional mineral drilling. It can be classified half-way between open hole drilling at the lower end of the scale and diamond drilling at the upper end. The system basically consists of two tubes, one inside the other, with compressed air flowing between the inner and outer tubes. Sample cuttings return up the inner tube through the head of the rig and via a hose to a cyclone where the sample is collected. This system means that the cuttings are free of contamination as they are at no time in contact with the outside formation of the hole.Reverse circulation drilling is divided into two areas: R.C. Roller and Blade for softer formations; and R.C. Percussion for harder formations.

Dump leaching began at Teller in late-1988 at a rate of 4 MTPA and has been progressively expanded to the present rate of 10 MTPA. Teller's on-going commitment to dump leaching is driven by the amenability of gold ores to the process and the availability of large tonnages of low grade gold ore. The sequence of evaluating ores for dump leaching involves rolling bottle tests on coarsely ground ore, followed by small and large column leaching and finally trial heaps. Trial heap tests are very expensive and an alternative approach to this is large diameter column leaching.A four-column permanent facility was built at Teller to specifically evaluate the leaching characteristics of new dump leach ores. Details of construction, operation and dismantling are discussed in the paper. Capital cost for the four column facility was some $45 940, while operating costs are about $24 800 per column.

The recoveries of the three cobalt minerals in the Mount Cobalt deposit, cobaltite CoAsS, erythrite CO3(AS04)8H20, and new cobalt mineral with a composition approximating 2CoO.CaO.Fe203.2As205.11H2O were investigated using physical and surface-chemical processes.Over 80 per cent cobalt recovery was achieved by tabling a cobaltite-mineralized sample, while about 76 per cent cobalt recovery was obtained by dry feed magnetic separation of a sample containing erythrite and the new cobalt mineral. The resultant primary magnetic concentrate with a cobalt grade of 5.5 per cent, was able to be upgraded to 14.4 per cent cobalt by regrinding .and a further magnetic separation.Electrophoretic mobility - pH responses for each of the three cobalt minerals were found to be similar. Each mineral remained negative over the pH range 3 to 11 and was most negative at mildly alkaline pH values.Cobaltite was floated effectively with amyl and ethyl xanthate collectors under acidic conditions at collector concentrations of 10-2M to 10-5M. Erythrite showed a similar flotation response using 10-sM amyl xanthate. The practical application of these laboratory separations to an industrial process is suggested.

Iron ore sintering is very complex with many interdependent variables. For the same ores, the sinter quality and sintering performance may vary significantly with the scale at which the sintering tests are conducted. Therefore it is important to understand the effect of test scale on sintering performance and sinter quality while interpreting the test results. In this paper, different scales of iron ore sintering research at CSIRO are described and compared. This is followed by the results of two sinter blends tested at different scales. The results are compared and correlated to demonstrate the benefits of iron ore sintering research at the laboratory (4 g), small (5 - 8 kg) and pilot (55 - 140 kg) scales.
