This paper will discuss Fordertechnik dawatering screens and their application in process industries. Fordertechnik screens were designed for the dewatering of deslimed, wet fines materials encountered in the mineral beneficiation, sand and coal processing industries. However, these screens have also been used in such industries as municipal waste treatment, paper pulp, chemicals and the food industries. Fordertechnik screens are of simple design and, as a result, offer low capital and maintenance costs. The design is based on the use of twin counter-rotating vibratory motors which provide high frequency, low amplitude linear movement of the screen deck which is essential for high production requirements. Ion exchange resins are an attractive alternative to activated carbon in both column and resin-in-pulp processes for the recovery of gold from cyanide solution. Resins are widely used for this purpose in the Soviet Union apparently in preference to activated carbons.A wide range of resins are available and the high level of resin technology is demon-strated in the resin processes used to recover uranium.The anionic gold complex, Au(CN) 2 , is selectively adsorbed onto weak and strong base resins. However other anionic cyanide complexes, cyanide ions and other anions from the process water are also adsorbed onto resin sites. Resin selectively for gold is not as high as it is for activated carbons. As a result similar gold loading capacities are obtained for resins and carbons when used in plant liquors.

The treatment of beach sands in'' the Bunbury/Capel' area for the extraction of ilmenite is a very recent development in the mining industry in'J7estern Australia. Nevertheless since the commencement of production in 1956, ilmenite has become the sixth most important mineral produced. The increasing world recognition of W.A. as a major' Iiroducer of ilmenite is due primarily ' to its low chromic oxide. ; (Cr203 content,, 0,03% to 0.04%, combined with a medium to high grade TiO2 content, 54% - 6 , supported by large reserves, a'. stable government with close access to good shipping facilities.. Ilmenite is produced from-these deposits at low-costs, enabling the industry to compete on world markets despite high rates for sea freights because of the distance from.major markets.

The principles and practical applications of the Mogensen Sizer are examined, with particular reference to the experiences at Coal Cliff Mine, New South Wales. The Mogensen Sizer has proven to be a worthwhile alternative to conventional screening. It has the flexibility and capacity to offer a useful sizing tool, particularly in areas of confined space. Mining in Guyana dates back into antiquity and a brief history of gold and diamond mining and of the small-scale miner, the pork-knocker, is given. The gold and diamond deposits found on the beds and in the flats of old and present rivers and the current methods of investiga- ting these deposits are briefly described. Methods of mining these deposits including the small-scale hand methods of pitting and diving with or without helmets are also briefly described. 'The small-scale method of dredging using a suction dredge in conjunction with a diver is described in more detail, from its develop- ment to current practice, without giving too much mechanical and technical details. The organisation of the industry and the mining titles, laws and policy relating thereto are reviewed. A brief account is given of the socio- economic role of the industry. Conclusions are made regarding the need for improvements in existing equipment and financing and for incentives to stimulate production. The future outlook of the industry is con- sidered.

During the latter part of 1936, conditions encountered in sinking the Main Ore shaft made it impractical and uneconomical to continue deepening it to serve haulage levels below the present No. 5 level. Plans were therefore made for an interior shaft, to serve new lower levels, that terminated above No. 5 level so that ore hoisted could be drawn off on this level and transported to the Main Ore shaft for final conveyance to the mill crude ore bin. The No. 2 interior ore shaft was only developed below No. 4 level and borehole ropeways with a winder located on the surface were installed in preference to an underground winder installation. No. 2 ore shaft with borehole ropeways commenced lead ore hoisting operations in September 1938. Apart from the copper ore hoisted in the war years of 1943-46, lead ore was hoisted to No. 5 level until September, 1951.

The breaking of rock by explosives occurs so rapidly that the details of the phenomenon cannot he observed by the unaided eye. High resolution cameras and VCRs offer a means of slowing down the blasting action. A high resolution super video camera with digital zoom and a variable shutter speed was imported and used for the first time in India as a tool for blast optimisation studies at Malanjkhand Copper Project. Slow motion play-back revealed that the gases vented out through the fissures. The crest moved prior to the lower portion of the bench when initiated with detonating cord. The delay timing between the rows was not enough to provide sufficient relief and rock movement. This inadequate delay timing resulted in flyrock from the back rows. Stemming ejection was observed from practically all the holes. The muck profile was not satisfactory. A trial was carried out using 450 ms in hole delays and 25 nis surface delays. The front row holes were drilled based on the observations made from the laser profiling survey system. The video of the monitored blast showed that the rock started moving prior to the stemming ejection. It could be clearly seen that the entire block was completely initiated through the surface delays before the onset of the burden movement, thus eliminating any chance of misfires. Viewing blasts in high quality slow motion was useful to arrive at modified design parameters, resulting in uniform fragment size distribution and controlled rock movement.

An analytical technique is described to identify areas of structural disturbance to coal and interseam strata in coal measures. It is based on exploration borehole data which records seam intersections and interseam lithologies. Computerised data bases have been developed to allow processing of large quantities of borehole records. The case study discussed is located in a tectonic setting dominated by thrust faulting. It provides a mechanism for the identification of low angle and bedding plane faults. In addition it allows the preparation of plans showing the areal distribution of the thrust sheets in the statigraphic section throughout the mine prospect. The technique requires the identification of normal undisturbed depositional thickness of coal seams and interseams to be determined. This is done for coal by the identification of coal ply distribution over the area. For interseam lithologies it is based on sedimentological modelling of lithology distributions, related back to the original depositional environments. Variations from the expected values are interpreted as structural Deformations.

Projections of metal requirements for Japan and the United States indicate growing competit- ion for Australia's mineral output and a critical need for continuing discovery of new reserves. These projections may be modified by economic, social and political controls - the most import- ant factor probably being a shortage and the high cost of risk and development capital. Changing ownership patterns toward joint ventures and increased state participation are anticipated. New developments in global tectonics and metallogeny delineate favourable zones for ex- ploration and permit establishment of priority search areas even in regions of poorly known geology. Declining ore grades and special character- istics to meet technological requirements may modify identification and evaluation criteria. A broad approach considering all environments of concentration within the geochemical cycle is re- quired within any metallogenic province. The exploration geologist must be able to integrate geological theory, mining technology and financial analysis to establish well defined exploration objectives, in terms of economic and geologic models, in concept-oriented programmes.

The tunnel alignments investigated for the Gosford Regional Sewerage Scheme are located in the Terrigal Formation and are covered for most of their length by a thick blanket of soil and weathered rock. The following techniques were found to be most effective in geotechnical investigations for tunnelling in this area: air-photo interpretation, seismic surveys to pinpoint drilling targets, in-situ measurements of strength,deformation modulus and permeability in cored holes, and the construction of rock- mass models. Cross-hole seismic modulus measurements, surface resistivity soundings and electric well-logging techniques were found to have limited applicability due to adverse local conditions.

Pellets were produced from carefully sized iron ore and silica sand fractions, under controlled moisture conditions, using a sealed balling drum. The strength of these pellets was measured as a function of moisture content and particle size. The results showed that the strength of the pellets could be adequately described by a model which equates the strength of the pellets with the negative pressure developed within the porous mass, provided that the particle size distribution was narrow and the mean particle size relatively large. The tendency of the concentrate to ignite was studied using four techniques, namely, laminar flow furnace, fluid bed, thermal analysis and boat-in-furnace. Exothermic activity occurred at two temperatures: minor activity in the vicinity of 200¦C, major activity at 330-350¦C. The low temperature reaction was due to the ignition of a small amount of free sulphur while the major activity was associated with the ignition of the sulphide minerals, notably pyrite. To avoid ignition of the sulphide minerals, the gas temperature should not exceed 300¦C and the oxygen content of the gas phase should be as low as possible. It was shown that little of the arsenic in the concentrate entered the gas phase during drying.

There have been few long-term studies of sulphide oxidation under controlled conditions. The object of this study was to investigate the oxidation and leaching characteristics of pyritic mine material under conditions that were commensurate with field conditions but which could be controlled and monitored on a long term basis. The test material - overburden from Woodlawn Mines Pty Ltd - was packed into a 300 cm high column and leached with water at an infiltration rate of 256 mm y-1 for 5 years. Chemical conditions within the column were continuously monitored by sensors embedded in the overburden and leachate from the base of the column was analysed weekly. The study examined the relationships between heavy metal release and gas, moisture, and chemical conditions in the column.
