Concentrating lower and more variable grade ore resources to meet acceptable concentrate quality criteria requires removal of significant amount of gangue minerals. Monitoring plant feed mineralogy and concentrate by on-stream analysis has significant economic benefits in concentrate quality and recovery optimisation. There is a need to develop a sensitive slurry on-line analyser for silica, aluminium, magnesium and other light elements.On-line XRF elemental analysis technology, which is a routine practice in base metal concentrators is not able to measure lighter elements than calcium from slurry. Too much of the X-ray fluorescence signal from lighter elements is absorbed by water. The limitations in the direct measurement of silica and other light elements have restricted its use in some applications. Some light element slurry analysers have been developed based on prompt gamma neutron activation (PGNAA) method but they have not performed up to the expectations. The central thickened discharge system of tailings disposal takes advantage of the natural beach slope formed by sub-aerially discharged tailings, and the non-segregating properties of thickened tailings, to create a homogeneous conical stack. The need for containing embankments can be largely avoided leading to capital and operating cost savings. Methods for estimating beach slopes and tailings density, essential parameters for the design of such a system, are described. Case histories from three mining operations are used to illustrate the application of the technique, There are also seen to be potential advantages in the areas of water management, seepage, and rehabilitation. Laboratory and in-situ testing enable parameters to be determined.

Routine, in-pit geological mapping of highwall at Central Queensland Coal Associates (C.O.C.A.) deep strip mines has proved too slow for the increasingly greater highwall lengths which require mapping. This realiz- ation has encouraged the search for faster mapping methods and after trial of ground photographic methods has resulted in the adoption of interpretive mapping off stereo cover, oblique -- aerial photography. This entails using a Cessna 182 light aircraft flying at its slowest speed, the aerial meth- od finally employed consisting of two Vinten, air reconnaissance cameras mounted in parallel and simultaneously taking both colour and black and white photographs of the mine high- wall. The respective 1:500 scale enlargements produced from the 70mm format films combine to present the sharpest resolution attainable under the field conditions pertaining and such information on weathered material as only colour photography can fully render. Total costs for the aerial photography method are estimated to be about the same as those for conventional in-pit mapping. Whilst total costs are comparable, geo- logist's time for mapping a 10 km. length is reduced to less than half that for in-pit mapping (for Stage 1, fully accurate mapping) and accuracy and detail are greatly improved. This statement applies not only to the flotation machines, but also to equipment for crushing and grinding, elevating the pulp, dehydrating of concentrates, and the methods of driving the various equipment.Distributed through the Proceedings and Transactions of various metallurgical societies and journals there are many excellent descriptions of flotation mills, their equipment and performance.Whilst these articles describe-in many cases in detail-the equipment in the mills to which they refer, the reasons which govern the choice of each particular equipment are not usually given.

The recovery of molybdenum at Kennecott Utah Copper (KUC) has become increasingly important as its demand and price have risen dramatically in the last few years. Consequently, the flotation behaviour of the molybdenum bearing mineral, molybdenite, has received a significant amount of attention. The flotation performance of molybdenite generally lags that of the copper sulfide minerals and is much more variable. There are many factors including particle size, liberation, surface slimes and oxidation that contribute to this and also much speculation as to the relative contribution of each of these factors. This paper discusses the morphology of the molybdenite found at KUC, the mineral associations in the different lithogical ores types and the effect that each of these has on flotation performance. Quantitative mineralogical analysis and an assessment of particle shapes are used to explain that flotation behaviour does not necessarily follow expected trends and that some behaviour is counter-intuitive. This unique behaviour can be explained by the morphology and anisotropic nature of molybdenite.

The AuPlus" Systems have been applied in the gold mining industry to achieve improved gold recoveries, faster leach kinetics and reduced cyanide consumptions. Calcium or hydrogen peroxide, collectively known as peroxygens, can be used. The choice depending on plant design and the nature of the ore. Laboratory test work and plant trials are included in this paper to illustrate the benefits of peroxygen usage in extractive gold metal- lurgy.

Two suites of dusts (waste-heat boiler and electrostatic precipitator) collected in 1976 and 1980 from the Kalgoorlie nickel smelter were subjected to chemical and XRD analysis and were examined by SEM and optical microscopy. The spherical to sub-spherical particles contained oxide and glassy phases with small amounts of sulfide. XRD showed that the major phase was a mixed Ni-Fe oxide spinel with some hematite. These phases compared well with those predicted by thermodynamics. The particle size distributions showed that in the 1976 and 1980 suites 20 per cent by weight was respectively coarser than 60 and 115/lm (boiler dusts) and 40 and 30/lm (precipitator dusts). Maximum particle sizes estimated from sedimentation chamber theory were found to be in reasonable agreement with the maximum sizes found in the dusts.

The 1100 orebody is a massive copper sul- phide orebody which contains a major portion of the Isa Mine copper ore reserves of 130 million tonnes at 3.2%. The underground mining of a deposit as large as the 1100 orebody is technologically a complex operation as extraction strategies have to be evaluated with reference to 1. rock mechanics considerations, 2. safety and environmental standards, 3. production and operating require- ments and 4. metal recovery and costs. The mining philosophy in the orebody has undergone considerable change over the past five years as a result of experience and improved technology. At this stage, primary stopes are extracted by high rise sublevel open stoping and pillars by slot and mass blast drawn either under rock fill or as an open Stope.

Changes to water industry practice are required as a consequence of the Council of Australian Governments water reform agenda which binds all states and territories to a range of measures intended to drive new efficiency, sustainability, higher value use and proper provision for environmental needs. Queensland is implementing its reforms program through its water resource planning process, a legislatively underpinned program that provides for a new level of social, economic and environmental security. A water resource plan for the Fitzroy Basin has been finalised and its implementation plan, which details infrastructure operational arrangements for the basin, is due to be released later this year. The mining industry is a major contributor to the economy of the Basin, and although a comparatively minor water consumer, is now aligning its water use practices with the stateÆs maturing integrated resource management paradigm. This new culture presents both challenges and opportunities. Water reform in the Fitzroy basin is well advanced. The processes and institutional arrangements that have been developed are of significant importance to the aspirations of current and future minerals development. This paper outlines the current status of those reforms and the likely institutional framework for the near future. The paper also discusses how the reforms impact on the availability, access and security of water available to mining interests.

The Bureau of Mines in cooperation with Kaiser Steel Corporation conducted two methane drainage studies in an advancing section of the Sunnyside No. I Mine where production was being severely hampered by methane emissions. A total of six horizontal aoreholes were completed during the studies to an average length of 291 meters. Total gas production from the boreholes as of December 1981 has exceeded 6,088,800 m3. Methane emissions into the section were reduced by 40 pct as a result of the first drainage system. The second drainage system is currently producing 11,328 m3/day from four Doreholes. Mining of the section and cementing of the horizontal horeholes is expected to begin within 2 Years.

An important rutile-ilmenite-zircon bearing sand deposit was discovered by local farmers at Eneabba, 300 km by road north of Perth in 1970. These heavy minerals occur in a series of ancient strandlines and associated dunal deposits at elevations from 85 m to 170 m above the present sea level and are situated,30 km inland. The strandlines were deposited on wave- cut platforms in an ancient bay bounded by Mesozoic sediments during a series of regress- ions from a high sea level, probably during late Tertiary or early Pleistocene times. The immediate source of the heavy minerals in the Eneabba deposit is a widespread low content of those minerals in the nearby Mesozoic sedi- ments. The high-grade southern portion of the Eneabba deposit has been closely drilled and is now being prepared for production by Allied Eneabba.Pty. Ltd., a subsidiary of Allied Minerals N.L. This part of the deposit is 11 km long and up to 2.5 km wide. It is characterised by little or no overburden and the average depth of mineralisation, bounded by a 2.5 per cent heavy mineral cut-off, is 12 m. The water-laid strandline deposits at the base of the mineralisation are generally high grade, ranging from 20 to 60 per cent

It is not often that mines have as much warning of the approach of bad ground conditions as was the case at the Western Mining Corporation, Kambalda Nickel Operations Lafranchi/Schmitz Decline. Most aspects of this operation are in fact quite unique and like the best solutions, the answer to the problem of weak and foliated ground conditions was relatively simple; requiring the use of readily available explosives although the idea of using it in this manner may not be the most obvious.The use of high shock energy POWERGEL 2131 cartridges proved to be the correct answer, in conjunction with small changes in drill pattern design. The resulting lack of overbreak bears testimony to the success of the concept and the commitment of the miners to achieving a safe working environment.

An underground mine, a treatment plant and supporting facilities have been constructed at Lebong Tandai in Sumatra, Indonesia by PT Lusang Mining. Throughput is initially 50,000 tonnes per annum of ore with an inbuilt capability to expand to 100,000 tonnes per annum. Construction proceeded in parallel with design work on a tightly controlled critical path schedule. The very remote location of the mine, the difficult access and the fact that equipment was imported from many parts of the world presented a challenging project management problem. The transport system, which involves road, river and rail and support facilities on site had to be brought into full operation prior to the arrival of major equipment. Mine development involved the reopening of the old access drives and workings, refurbishing two shafts and the haulage system together with redevelopment of old stoping areas and the opening of new stoping areas. Ore production is now from three main areas using shrink and underhand stoping methods. Ore breaking and drive development is with conventional airleg mounted rockdrills and ANFO explosives. Exploration to locate and develop new reserves to replace ore mined is an ongoing activity.

The bulk and surface chemistry of metal ion hydrolysis and precipitation and the redox chemistry of metal ions, sulphur, and other species is central to an under- standing of flotation. The paper contains a review of general hydrolysis-redox chemistry appropriate to the flotation process, and a model of natural and collector-induced flotation of sulphides is constructed. The practical application of the model to real flotation systems is then explored with a view to better under- standing of the chemistry of selectivity and grade control.

Gold Tellurides are important sources of gold at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, Cripple Creek, Colorado and Vatukoula, Fiji. Unlike free gold, the tellurides of gold are rather refractory and the usual treatment practice has been to oxidize the tellurides, either chemically or by roasting prior to cyanidation of the liberated free gold. There is a large measure of disagree- ment as to the actual cause of the refractory nature of gold tellurides. In order to investigate the leaching chemistry of gold telluride, a study was undertaken on the thermodynamics and kinetics of its dissolution using electrochemical methods. From this study suitable direct leaching condi- tions are suggested. In acidic chloride solutions gold telluride can be leached using iron(III) as the oxidant. At lower acid concentrations the reaction is controlled by the formation of a passivating film of H2TeO3. In alkaline solutions containing cyanide the rate of gold telluride dissolution increases with increasing pH and strength of oxidant. However, this can result in excessive consumption of cyanide in the presence of stronger oxidants.

Mine ventilation models are now an accepted component of most mine management systems. However, modern ventilation models also represent a highly structured spatial data source, defining underground pathways and connections across a mine. This creates opportunities to extend the use of network models beyond ventilation design, by using critical path algorithms to find pathways such as minimum distance or minimum time.This paper explores the use of ventilation network models to automatically analyse and calculate potential emergency escape routes. A variation of Dijkstra’s algorithm is used to predict complex pathways between any two points across a model, representing an escape route from an emergency area (such as a fire) to a safe location (such as the surface or a refuge station). Weighting can be assigned to paths to represent potential travel speed, obstructions or preferred routes. Finally, emergency considerations such as smoke or gas in some parts of the mine can then be incorporated into the pathways to force the algorithm to avoid dangerous routes and specify safer pathways. The recovery of copper from a flotation concentrate using ferric chloride leaching has been investigated. The concentrate from the Horseshoe Lights Mine near Meekatharra, Western Australia, contained mainly digenite, pyrite and talc minerals. Over 95 per cent of the copper was dissolved in an acidified ferric chloride solution in one hour at 70¦C and ambient pressure. The pyrite and gangue minerals did not react. The leaching process was found to consist of four separate reactions and the shrinking core model was used to describe the process. The effects of particle size, temperature, concentration of FeCls, stirring speed and leaching time on metal dissolution were investigated. The apparent activation energies in the second, third and fourth reactions of leaching of copper concentrate were 28.8, 11.9 and 53.9 kJ/mol, respectively. The optimum conditions for the leaching of copper from the concentrate, within the range of conditions studied were: particle size 63 per cent minus 38 ¦m, a ferric chloride concentration of 1.48 M, a temperature of 70¦C, and a stirring speed of 800 rpm.

The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Fimiston Open Pit is located on the eastern boundary of the Kalgoorlie-Boulder City and is mining an area traditionally known as the Golden Mile. The pit area has been continuously worked since 1893, predominantly by underground mining methods and more recently through open cut mining. There are over 2000 km of old mine headings and numerous stopes under the open pit area. KCGM has interpreted and digitised the underground mine plans and stope sections into a common database. A 2D-model software package, called Pits, was developed in-house and allows old workings to be displayed at any bench level; this is integrated with 3D Vulcan modelling software, which allows triangulated surfaces to be displayed. Almost every mining activity is affected by underground workings. The effective management of the interaction between current mining and the underground workings is very important for safety and production. A specific ævoidÆ management department has been formed and its broad objective is to minimise the impact of underground workings upon production while maximising safety. Special criteria and procedures have been developed and implemented to keep personnel and machinery from being exposed to unsafe ground. It is of primary importance to accurately define the location and outline of underground workings in advance. Probe drilling has been used as the key tool for that purpose. Various geophysical methods have also been trialled on site to detect underground workings; these are discussed in some detail. This paper discusses ævoidÆ management issues such as data integration, void detection and flagging. The impact of underground workings on mine planing, production and slope stability is also discussed.
