The instruments are described which measure rock mass displacements, permeability changes and alterations to hydrology. A case study of a landslide, which threatened vital infrastructure essential for the continuous operation of the Ok Tedi copper mine is presented. The paper presents a detailed description of the land- slide, outlines the assets at risk, and how the issue was addressed. This included the consideration of remedial options and the im- plementation of the most economically sound and geotechnically feasible remedial design which was completed within budget and on schedule. The paper is intended to highlight the responsibility of a mine based Geotechnical Engineering section in providing essential geotechnical investigations, design and professional advice on addressing stability issues in the infrastructure region.

The Permian rocks at Gympie were first studied as far back as 1868 in conjunction with the discovery of gold. The relationship of the Gympie Group to other sequences in the Gympie Composite Terrane is an important subject of investigations in a new mapping project of the Geological Survey Program of the Department of Resource Industries.In two areas the Gympie Group has been divided into four defined formations. They are the Highbury Volcanics (base), Ram mutt Formation, South Curra Limestone and Tamaree Formation (top) in the Gympie area, and the Mant basalt (base), Kolbar Formation, Gigoomgan Limestone and Teebar Formation (top) in the Gigoomgan area. Geochemical and lithological evidence from the basal volcanics of the Gympie Group (Highbury Volcanics, Mant basalt) indicate that they developed in an intraoceanic island arc setting. The overlying volcaniclastic sediments (Rammutt Formation, Kolbar Formation), which contain some continentally-derived material, are mainly of local derivation and shallow-water marine. A hiatus is present at the top of the Early Permian Rammutt Formation and Kolbar Formation. Following the hiatus, limestone sedimentation characteristic of a basin of restricted circulation developed in the Late Permian. There is some evidence of a hiatus between the limestone deposition of the Gigoomgan and South Curra Limestones and the overlying probable turbidite deposits of the Teebar and Tamaree Pnrmatinnc

Plutonic Resources Limited (formerly known as Pioneer Mineral Exploration Limited) delineated, developed and operates the Plutonic Gold Mine located 180 kms northeast of Meekatharra, Western Australia. Gold mineralisation was discovered in the Marymia greenstone belt by Great Central Mines NL (GCM) in 1988. There was no previous, recorded gold mining activity in the area. In May 1989, Plutonic Resources Limited (PRL) entered into an agreement to acquire a 51 per cent interest in the three Mining Leases containing the Plutonic deposit from GCM. Subsequently in December 1989, PRL acquired the remaining 49 per cent interest in the Mining Leases. PRL and GCM are also involved in a 51:49 regional joint venture on extensive Exploration Licences in the vicinity of the Mining Leases. Following due diligence validation, reserve delineation and testwork, a feasibility study was undertaken in conjunction with JR Engineering Services, which led to the financing and development of the project for operation in August 1990.

Not so many years ago the reason for an inadequate result from a geophysical survey was insufficient data or poor quality data. In many instances such as gravity, magnetic and radiometric surveys, both these constraints are vanishing or have vanished. High quality sensors, improved data storage, accurate differential GPS and top quality interpretive software now enable the interpreter to understand not just the cause of the anomaly but the host environment in which it resides. Examples of potential field data and also data provided by the more complex electromagnetic systems, from Australia Ghana, West Africa, are used as illustrations.

Appin Colliery mines the Bulli Seam with a gas composition of 98.5% methane and 1.5% carbon dioxide. Relaxation of the strata generally occurs to below the base of the Wongawilli Seam, some 40 m below the Bulli Seam, and approxim- ately 125 m above the Bulli Seam, for longwall face widths of 135 m or more. Previous exper- ience showed that when longwall faces were mined for a distance approximately equal to the face width, the mine ventilation could not provide sufficient dilution due to methane emissions from the underlying measures. Postdraining downholes were drilled to intersect the Wongawilli Seam below the operat- ng longwall. These holes were connected to an underground to surface gas range and various suction levels were applied to improve gas drainage. The resulting gas flow rates and purity from all the downholes were regularly monitored and peak flows in some holes exceeded 160 1/sec. The surface plant drained almost 20 million m3 of gas for the period July 1981 to January 1982 at an average methane purity of approximately 70%. Distinct patterns emerged for different downholes from curves illustrat- ing their variations in flow rate with distance subsequent to passage of the longwall face. Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited, Laronde Division, operates the deepest single-lift shaft in the western hemisphere. The initial Penna hoisting plant was designed for a production rate of 1800 tonnes per day (t/d) from a 2240 m deep shaft. Exploration success, while sinking the shaft, led to a decision in 1998 to increase the production rate to 4500 t/d of ore from a loading depth of 2200 m. The new production rate was achieved by increasing the size of the rope and reducing the rope static factor from the existing 5.0 required by regulation to a static factor using the formula 25 000/(4000 + L) contained in a draft document that would eventually become SABS 0294 in South Africa. The formula permits Laronde to use a static factor as low as 4.0. The upgraded Penna hoisting system is the first hoisting plant outside of South Africa to meet the South African requirements. This paper describes the conversion of the hoisting plant to the lower rope selection factor in the year 2000 and the operating and maintenance issues experienced since then.

This paper presents the physical modelling results of subsurface fracture development associated with Iongwall mining operations and an application of image processing techniques to interpretion of the results. Physical modelling results haióbeen obtained by employing a large sand and plaster model loaded purely by gravity as a means of fracturing the subsurface strata above the longwall excavation. The results have shown fracture development and crack propagation as a longwall face advances and demonstrated that the strength of stratified rocks, the presence and position of a weak band-, and the extraction thickness, have significant effects upon the overall fracture patterns above the excavation. Binary images of fracture patterns were scanned from the black and white photographs of the tested models using an image analyser coupled to a video camels. These images were manipulated by a custom written C program which allows the images to be processed in both vertical and horizontal direction. The images were filtered to quantitatively differentiate between vertical and horizontal fracture intensities. The vertical fracture intensity is particularly important as vertical fractures are considered to provide the main avenues for surface and subsurface water inflow into the excavation. The use of the image analysis techniques has shown a promising improvement in image enhancement and in model results interpretation in a quantitative manner. The numerical nature of the image analysis results will allow further statistical comparison with other modelling techniques to be undertaken and significantly increase the scope for use of the modelling technique results.

The economically significant seams in the Bowen Basin fall into four age groups, two in the Lower Permian and two in the Upper Permian. Coal deposition in the Galilee Basin did not commence until late in the Lower Per- mi-an and persisted into the Upper Permian. The Lower Permian and early Upper Permian coalfields of the Reids Dome Beds, the Collinsville Coal Measures and the Fair Hill-German Creek Formation are restricted to the west flank of the Bowen Basin. The uppermost Permian Rangal-Elphinstone-Baralaba Coal Measures have widespread distribution across the northern half and on both flanks of the Basin. Coal Measures in the subsidiary basins at BlairAtho/ and Ca/en were probably deposited at the same time as the Collinsville Coal Measures. The structure of the north west flank of the Bowen and the east flank of the Galilee Basin is essentially simple, but in the remainder of the basin doming and faulting complicate the structure. Also, bordering a large sec- tion of the east flank, is the Dawson Tectonic Zone, where the beds are tightly folded and faulting is intense. Cok- ing of seams is common in the northern sector of the Basin associated with igneous intrusion. With the exception of the Duaringa Basin on the east flank of the Bowen Basin, Tertiary sediments and basalt flows are more common at the western basin margin. Thick deposits of Tertiary sediments also occur in the south of the Galilee Basin. Con- sequently, coal subcrop, especially in the older, more westerly situated, coal measures is often at depths in excess of 100 m. East of this, the depth of weathering can be as shallow as 13 m and most of the coal subcrop is acces- sible to mining by open cut techniques. Coals deposited in the early Upper Permian are commonly more vitrain rich than those above and below. In the Bowen Basin, coal rank decreases from the north west to the south east, that is, from the semi-anthracites associated with the Dawson Tectonic Zone to the sub-bituminous coals of the southern Galilee Basin.

From a study of coke samples obtained from the tuyere level of four Australian Blast Furnaces, the nature of in-furnace coke degradation has been investigated. At the periphery of the raceway is a concentration of fines and the lump coke appears dull and rounded. However coke from the deadman is angular and relatively undegraded. Cokes made from higher rank coal appear to suffer preferential attack of the reactive maceral derived component (binder). The coke from lower rank coal appears to be attacked non-preferentially by the solution-loss reaction. Initial attempts to simulate these phenomena have given results consistent with these findings. From chemical analysis of the tuyere probe samples there appears to be a relative increase in carbon and decrease in-.sulphur and phosphorous between stockline and tuyere level. An overall decrease in coke mineral matter derived material was noted and associated with this was a significant gasification of silicon. Consequent formation of silicon carbide was noted.

The changing characteristics of raw materials has highlighted the limitations that conventional vibrating screens have in the handling of fine wet sticky materials. These' limitations have led to the development of a totally new concept of screening, the Rotating Probability Screen. In order to illustrate the practical benefits to be gained by the extraction of fine materials ahead of subse quent processes particularly in the coal industry, the experiences gained in Ro-Pro installations in America, Australia, Europe and Britain are drawn upon.

Future hard rock mining will gradually move towards complete mechanisation which lends itself to remote control and ultimately to robotic mining. This will require different technical inputs into mining engineering and one of these is in the area of rock'mechanics. Traditional hard rock mining has had little rock mechanics input. Problems arising from high stresses and poor ground conditions have in most cases be remedied after they occurred, in the worst case by abandoning a particular stope or area and starting elsewhere. In a fully mechanised remote or robotic mining situation the financial penalty for such an approach could be severe, as a major part of the production costs will be in the development and the equipment. It is therefore imperative that a complete rock mechanics feasibility study is undertaken before an area is set up for robot mining and that a continuous stability monitoring system is installed that will predict rock behaviour well in advance of mining, such that the necessary ground control measures can be implemented without impeding the continuity of mining. This system will utilise already existing instrumentation such as extensometers and stress cells, and possibly additional improved instrumentation which has to be developed for this particular Application.

Rock-breaker automation and remote operation improves the safety and efficiency of mining operations. This paper presents an overview of the Rocklogic rock-breaker automation system architecture that provides collision avoidance, automated parking and remote operation functionality. The system consists of a distributed computer control system that interfaces with sensors attached to the rock-breaker, the rock-breaker hydraulics and the site infrastructure. We present results of an automated Transmin rock-breaker installed in a production environment at an underground Australian mine site. The system has been in production use for over 900 days, during which there have been no reported collisions and 100 per cent adoption of the remote operation technology. As a result, Rocklogic has significantly improved the safety of rock-breaking operations and reduced the rock-breaking cycle time, thereby improving the site’s overall throughput.CITATION:Boeing, A and Douglas, E, 2014. A mathematical model for gas flow dynamics and heat and mass transfer processes occuring in the tuyere raceways and in the zone of the final for- mation and heating of pig iron and slag has been developed and simulated on a digital computer. It takes into account the formation and size of the raceway zones, combustion of coke and its substit- utes, oxidation of the metal, radiation from the gases to the raceway boundaries, physical heat losses and the direct reduction of the pig iron elements below the raceway zones. To evaluate the distribution of heat produced by the oxidation of metal between gases and prod- ucts of smelting, the problem of heating the mat- erials in the raceways with the sources of heat in the materials under conditions of intensive gas circulation in the raceways is solved. To determine the amount of heat transferred by radiation from the gas to the boundaries of the raceways, the problem of radiant heat transfer be- tween two grey bodies forming a closed system is solved. Using the structural parameters of the furn- ace, the inlet parameters of the combination blast and exit parameters of the melt, the model permits the calculation of the temperatures of materials entering and leaving the raceways and also the res- idual temperature of the gases, which qualitatively differs from the theoretical combustion temperature. Analysis of the operation of several different blast furnaces has shown that the overall picture of the interaction between gas flow dynamics, mass and heat transfer processes occuring in the race- ways and in the zone of final product formation, obtained with the aid of the model, now permits us to approach from a different position the deter- mination of the limiting factors in furnace operat- ion. It also allows us to explain certain phenom- ena observed in blast furnace practice and to dis- cover new relationships which may be used in analy- sis and control of the smelting process.

A background characterisation study was carried out in the Sangre de Cristo mountains, New Mexico, to: quantify naturally occurring contaminant loads from mineralised areas; define site-specific background concentrations; and to determine key factors controlling spatial and temporal variations in contaminant concentrations. The study included a comprehensive sampling and testing program (paste pH/EC, ABA, leach extraction tests) of soil/bedrock from mineralised areas (including erosional scars), and a ground water and surface water quality monitoring program in selected mineralised watersheds. Results demonstrate that high concentrations of contaminants occur naturally in ground and surface water draining the mineralised area of the Red River basin. The erosional scars were found to represent the major source of acid rock drainage (ARD) (~66 per cent) in this area due to: high rates of weathering and erosion, which continually exposes sulfide-bearing outcrops; and high rates of run-off as a result of high elevation and lack of vegetation. The scar material is generally very acidic (paste pH ranges from 8.5 to 1.5; average = 3.6) with highly elevated concentrations of sulfate and leachable metals. The composition and concentration of leachable metals vary significantly, not only between scars but also within a given scar. While all streams draining the various scar watersheds are highly acidic, each has a characteristic æfingerprintÆ of sulfate and metal concentrations. Most of the run-off from the scars infiltrates into alluvial debris flow aprons and reaches the Red River via groundwater flow.

The TauTona (Sotho for Great Lion) Mine near Carletonville, which is one of AngloGold AshantiÆs most profitable operations in South Africa, has started a multi-million dollar expansion project that is expected to extend the operational life of the mine by at least three years. The project will also secure some 1900 jobs for existing workers and contract workers. The $US140 million project entails the development of the orebody to a record depth of almost 4 km underground. It means that TauTona, which already mines gold at the deepest levels in the world, will deepen its mining activities from 3600 m to a new record depth of 3910 m. There is great anticipation about the expansion program, especially because of new technology that will contribute to a safer working environment. It includes a simplified hoisting system that will minimise safety risks in conveyance activities. Due to the unique nature of this project, depth below surface and working through a three-tier shaft system, various innovative measures were incorporated into the planning of the endeavour. Special support equipment was designed to reduce cycle times and enable the crews to install the extensive support, prescribed by the mineÆs rock engineering department, right up to the face before every blast. Both declines dip at 23¦. The personnel/material (P/M) shaft is 4.4 m wide x 3.9 m high. This shaft is unique in that the conveyance will have an onboard driver. The rock shaft is 4.5 m wide x 3.6 m high. Rock will be hoisted with two, ten-tonne overturning skips. In both cases, P/M and rock, the winders were designed for the highest duty cycle, which is encountered during sinking.

Ventilation, air leakage, and various cutting, loading and support movement operations all have a role in dust distribution on longwall faces as shown by the results of a large number of dust measurements on different longwall operations in the Bulli seam on the South Coast. It is concluded that leakage of air on the face has demonstrable mfluence on the exposure of the shearer operator to dust level. It is possible to calculate dust generated by various elements of a rrurung operation on the face from a single point measurement. In the examination of dust deposition from the source of generation as a function of particle size, it is found that respirable dust can remain airborne over long distances without any significant drop in concentration, if unobstructed.

The concentrating plant of the Broken Hill South Limited was described in Proceedings No. 44, Australasian Institute Mining and Metallurgy, December, 1921, by Wainwright and Read. It was erected on the present site in 1907 and 1908.From that date, the plant has undergone various alterations consistent with metallurgical improvements. By 1925, the timber work of the gravity secti"on had seriously deteriorated, so much so, that, when the machinery was working, the floors and supports vibrated badly, causing heavy maintenance costs.In 1928, it was decided to erect a new gravity-treatment section, to be followed later by a new flotation section.
