"This paper presents preliminary results of ongoing research being carried out at the University of New South Wales Australia (UNSW) into improved methods for estimating rock mass strength. In this paper the rock mass strength of Hawkesbury Sandstone is assessed. An estimate is first made based on an extensive database of intact rock strength data being collated by the author and the assumption that rock mass strength can be determined following the geological strength-index (GSI) approach. The resulting strength envelope is then compared with nine documented case studies where stress induced failure has occurred in tunnels excavated within Hawkesbury Sandstone. The case studies cover a range of conditions: construction dates from 1880s to 2006 spans from 3.2 to 12.5 m depths from 17 to 124 m excavation methods of drill and blast, roadheader and tunnel boring machine (TBM).Finite element modelling is used to assess the likely magnitudes of the principal stresses that were present at the time of the failures. The finite element models are interrogated to provide the values of major and minor principal stresses in and around the mapped failure zones. Failure and stable points are then compared to the proposed strength envelope(s) of Hawkesbury Sandstone derived using the Hoek-Brown and the spalling criteria. In the present study infrared attenuated total reflection (IR-ATR) was used to monitor the rate of in situ adsorption of heptyl xanthate on a layer of zinc sulfide synthesised on a germanium ATR crystal. The zinc sulfide surface was characterised using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The absorbance of heptyl xanthate measured increased with increasing bulk concentration of the adsorbate up to an equilibrium plateau value corresponding to a fractional coverage of the surface sites of the substrate. For the adsorption from solutions of concentrations between 10-3 and 10-5 M, the rate of adsorption increased with increasing bulk concentration. At higher concentrations the measured absorbance should be corrected for the absorbance due to the concentration of xanthate in bulk solution. The present work provides a discussion of this correction. Assuming the adsorption stage to be rate-controlling and proportional both to the concentration of the adsorbing species in solution and unreacted surface area, a rate law governing this type of transient adsorption kinetics was derived. By means of absorbance data for the concentrations 0.1 and 0.01 mM, the rate constant of adsorption was calculated. From the initial part of a Langmuir adsorption isotherm, the absorbance at monolayer coverage and the equilibrium constant of adsorption could be estimated.

The authors were engaged to optimise a traditional rebar cage reinforced concrete segmental lining by means of finite element analysis (FEA) using macro synthetic fibres for the Shanghai metro extension. The aim of this study was to reduce or entirely replace the original steel reinforcement of the segmental lining, in order to make the precast production process faster and more economic. The outer diameter of the tunnel was 6200 mm, the thickness of the segments was 350 mm.The numerical calculations were performed by Atena Finite Element software, which is based on the combination of Menétrey-William and Rankine failure surfaces on the compression and tension sides respectively. The effect of the macro synthetic fibres was modelled as tension stiffening on the tension surface.A one-to-one full scale model of an assembled tunnel ring using the original reinforcement cages was tested at Tongji University in Shanghai, July 2013. The ring was tested to differing load levels where load and displacement were measured until failure. The author’s first step was to calculate the real displacement characteristics of the original reinforced concrete (RC) ring, then calculate the numerically modelled version, so as to compare them. The material parameters of the concrete and rebar used had been determined through basic material tests conducted at the Tongji University. (Bi, Liu and Wang, in press).The numerical modelling undertaken has shown good correlation with the full-scale physical test results. Optimisation of the lining reinforcement was achieved through the addition of fibres, resulting in a substantial reduction of the steel rebar cages. "Ventilation models are invaluable tools for both prediction of routine daily ventilation changesin an operating mine to circuit performance expectations at the mine in 20 yearsÆ time. Arguably ventilation offi cers are becoming increasingly reliant on maintaining an accurate ventilation model with which to do their work. This paper relates to the practical assessment of the accuracy and thus ability of a mine site ventilation model to be reliably utilised on such varied tasks. The author's experience shows that in some cases the incumbent model is found to be in a state of tune that demonstrates a mine wide detailed assessment of branch resistances is simply not required. The money spent on a detailed mine wide ventilation survey that is not required would be far bett er served purchasing much needed monitoring equipment, rather than fixing something that is possibly not even broken. The term ænot rocket scienceÆ has been incorporated into the title of this paper because it appears that many practitioners believe that circuit validation is diffi cult. As long as clear att ention to detail is paid to the actual data collection process then drawing an accuracy comparison between the circuit performance and the model performance at any particular point in time, is really very simple. This paper will show a manner in which a circuit can be analysed to determine its actual state of health by using various diagnostic tools and tips. It will help ensure that subsequent work scopes to address any highlighted model defi ciencies can be more effi ciently scoped and targeted. It will hopefully remind operational people that such self assessments can easily be done æin houseÆ if the appropriate steps are followed."

"Our understanding of mineral resources relies on three basic steps: data capture data interpretation model construction. Until recently, all three of these steps required significant time and manual effort to produce a single resource model for mine planning, typically taking more than a year to progress from drilling to the final block model. Over the past several years, BHP Billiton has been developing innovative workflows in rapid resource modelling projects to significantly reduce these time constraints and make the process more productive by replacing manual activities with automated ones. Rapid resource modelling is the process of combining recently developed off-the-shelf technology with internal technology developments to fundamentally change the way we collect, interpret, model and evaluate geoscience data. Initiatives include automated systems and standardised workflows to make it safer, faster and cheaper to continuously update multidiscipline resource models. Specifically, rapid resource modelling workflows combine: real-time analysis of drill holes and drill samples with downhole tools and hyperspectral scanning systemsautomated interpretation of drill hole intervals based on pattern-recognition algorithmscontinuous modelling workflows using implicit modelling software. Within the mining industry there is a growing trend of placing inexperienced technical people into positions of responsibility beyond their readiness. Their responsibilities often include providing the fundamental basis for decision-making: the resource model or even the daily grade control estimates. Whilst software continues to make the processes more accessible, the thinking and rationale for selecting parameters still requires control rather than auto-piloting. Operators run these systems in virtual isolation, and have limited immediate access to experts. Beyond the stress of the professional burden are the increased risks to the mining operations and overall project success.While many experienced experts recall being thrown in the deep end, the relative isolation from experts coupled with the gravity of professional burden before readiness, is less familiar. Many recall in intimate detail the experts who gave them direction, assisted them along the way and even helped them claw out of inadvertent mistakes. Experienced professionals all have a responsibility to enable capability across the generations, to ease the burden and to mitigate the risks.This paper provides an outline of how mentoring as an on-the-job professional development process can be structured to more fully enable success of a mentoring program. "There have always been development projects that fall short of expectations. In the last decade, we have seen more than the usual number of mining and oil/gas development projects taking significantly longer to develop and costing materially more than expected. The recent resource-equity market slump proves that investors are now far more cautious about investing new capital in the mineral and petroleum resources sector.What have we learned since 2005? Why have projects missed their targets? Why do investors often feel misled?Valuation of a project and the estimation of value is a more complex process than the evaluation of the merits of project development. The merit of project development can be clear from a prefeasibility evaluation, but this is no reason to skip the rigour of a feasibility study. The valuation of any project that is developed with any added risk should be discounted for this added risk.The development of a project impacts on other stakeholders, and the indirect cost of these impacts can have material implications for the cost structure, time and ultimate valuation of the project for its financial backers. The development of new projects (and thereby supply) can also have an impact on commodity prices, and therefore an impact on returns for financial backers.This paper will provide commentary on the author’s experiences and observations as a project developer and operator for 25 years, before becoming a project financier a decade ago.CITATION:Rozman, L I, 2016. The importance of the accurate determination and interpretation of the bulk density and porosity of a given iron ore deposit is very often disregarded or neglected. Large amounts of time and money are spent on delineating and testing orebodies, and yet one of the most important factors in resource evaluation is sometimes estimated or, at best, determined from existing data from similar deposits. The Thabazimbi and Sishen South iron ore deposits are two well-known economical occurrences of high-grade iron ore in South Africa. Both these deposits formed as secondary enrichment of banded iron formation lithologies. Ongoing density studies on both these deposits are underway and results thus far proved very effective and necessary. Small-scale methods are used to determine average values for different ore types on both deposits. These values are used in resource estimation and geophysical interpretation.

Coal mining is recognised globally as a hazardous activity, and as a result operates under high levels of regulatory and public scrutiny while managing a workforce operating in a high-risk environment. Mining companies have developed sophisticated risk assessment procedures, management systems and personnel competency requirements that facilitate the safety and health of employees, and Australia is a world leader in coal mining safety and health.RISKGATE is an Australian Coal Association Research Program funded online platform that delivers broad cross-industry knowledge about current practice in the identification, assessment and management of coal mining risk. Centennial Coal has engaged with the RISKGATE program, managed by the University of Queensland’s Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre, since its inception in 2010, and contributed topic experts to many modules, including underground topics within the geological and geotechnical domain (strata underground, outburst, coal bumps and bursts, and inrush).In 2013, Centennial Coal experienced significant unexpected strata failure at the Mandalong mine without any personal injury or fatality. This paper presents a case study in the application of RISKGATE to management of this unwanted event, the steps that were implemented, the information that was sourced and the contribution that RISKGATE made to the final outcomes. World urban expansion puts constraints on the available land surface area of our major cities both for accommodating people as well as providing infrastructure and services whilst at the same time attempting to preserve the remaining natural environment. Whilst consideration is often given to underground planning for private and public transport infrastructure, the author is of the opinion that the current lack of underground planning of our cities that are suitable for underground development will have major long implications when finally the need for underground space planning is critical and ultimately recognised. This paper identifies the need for our city planners to integrate surface planning and underground planning as a ‘total planning solution’ where the city plan incorporates the elements of underground space planning as identified in this paper. Investigations by the author reveal that there are very few cities in the world that actually incorporate underground space planning in their city plans. The author uses the City of Brisbane as a case study for the potential introduction of underground space planning as part of the city plan. Despite efforts by the author to include the planning concept of underground commercial development in the latest Brisbane City Plan 2014 as well as four underground space workshops in Brisbane over the past 20 year through the Australasian Tunnelling Society (ATS), underground space planning for the City of Brisbane, apart from infrastructure projects, is not considered of significance to the City of Brisbane.CITATION:Robertson, A C, 2014. It is very rare in the underground hard rock environment to find a deposit that is ideally suited to a specific mining method. Usually the irregular shape of the orebody will allow the deposit to be extracted by more than one mining method. During the prefeasibility stage, a number of conceptual mine designs are generally evaluated to see which offers the best method of extraction for the deposit. The selected method is usually based on key decision criteria such as the overall extraction of the orebody, the amount of metal produced annually and the unit cost of production. Often the prefeasibility study document will state that the project has an NPV of æxÆ million dollars. This statement can be made without any quantitative consideration of the likely risks of the mining methods reviewed or the level of confidence in the estimation of the NPV. By assigning a probability of failure to each component of the mining cycle a measure of the risk for each method can be determined. One mining method may provide the highest NPV when it is performing well, however, there may be a higher risk of a major failure impacting on the performance of that method, eg the failure of a mass blast of a crown or rib pillar. This paper will present a flowsheet approach to the use of risk analysis for determining the likely production rates of different mining methods. This framework allows the annual metal output to be estimated and from this the NPV for each method. A level of confidence can be applied to the estimated NPV for each option. An example will be presented on how this technique has been used within the Normandy Group.

The management and operation of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) are often neglected until the process plant has to shut down as a result of this negligence or as a result of a catastrophic failure as was the case during the recent TSF failure in North America.TSFs are often regarded as non-assets and do not receive the attention they deserve in terms of technical expertise and financial provision. A TSF is not a simple structure but a complex and dynamic structure that changes throughout its operational life. The operational life of a TSF is the period in which there is the greatest opportunity for risks to occur. The failure of a TSF is normally not as a result of a single event but as a result of a consequence of events. These events are often not recognised in time due to a number of factors.Process plants and slurry pumping systems are operated at suboptimal conditions in order to maintain throughput. At the same time, the tailings properties are compromised in terms of slurry density and particle size distribution amongst other things. Tailings deposition cycles and drying cycles are not well understood and the tailings management strategy is not well tuned in terms of maximising consolidation and improving in situ densities. Pond control is also neglected. These are aspects that form the keystone to the effective utilisation of available deposition area as well as the frequency and cost of future embankment raises.Apart from operational issues, forward planning in terms of budget requirements, increases in tailings throughput, embankment raises, pipe replacements, etc are normally put on the back burner. Available deposition space at the time seems to render this planning obsolete.The bottom line is that responsible tailings management and proper forward planning can limit liability and reduce the bottom line in terms of cents per ton if correctly implemented by suitably qualified tailings managers and engineers.The aspects that need to be considered as part of responsible tailings management are highlighted in this paper.CITATION:Boshoff, J, 2015. Mining of the zinc, lead and silver deposit at the Broken Hill Southern Operations site has been occurring for over 100 years. As a result of this, a significant amount of high-grade ore is now taken from narrow remnant pillars left between old stopes and zones of previously mined ground. Stopes have been filled with either hydraulic fill (also known as ‘sandfill’), cemented hydraulic fill (cemented sandfill), waste rock backfill or a mixture of these fill types.In the last ten years, there has been considerable success mining through narrow pillars where sandfill is exposed in the development face and/or walls using a ‘shell’ support regime, wherein a layer of bolted mesh is sandwiched between two layers of sprayed fibrecrete (25 mm fibrecrete, then mesh and bolt, followed by a final 50 mm layer of fibrecrete). Shell support is also used in very poor, broken, relaxed ground conditions and in areas filled with cemented fill (sandfill with a minimum four per cent cement content).The next stage of innovation has been to develop a technique for mining through old stope voids filled with uncemented sandfill, known locally as ‘contours’ (old cut-and-fill working), an activity where unconsolidated sandfill can run at the face and from the backs. The challenge is to prevent exposed sandfill in the face and the backs from failing before it can be supported.To achieve this, the Southern Operations mine has implemented a technique in which 6 m long spiling bars are used to strengthen and stabilise the sandfill in front of the face. The hollow steel bars are driven in around the heading perimeter in a closely spaced pattern then pumped full of grout. The bars and the grout stabilise the sandfill in front of the face, preventing it from failing into the drive during excavation and prior to further support being installed.A final support system consisting of shotcrete, mesh, bolts and steel girders is installed as excavation progresses. Both the initial and final support systems are essentially passive support systems designed for a low-stress environment (as the stress originates mostly from the mass of unconsolidated sandfill).This process is slow and labour intensive. Fifteen separate cycles of people/machinery are needed to progress one equivalent heading cut (compared to six for a standard fibrecrete- and bolt pattern-supported rock face heading). This slow pace introduces scheduling challenges, but the process opens up parts of the orebody that were previously uneconomical to mine.CITATION:Carroll, D, 2014. In 2010 Agnew Gold Mine (AGM) struggled to produce the required tonnages from its stopes. The longhole rises used to create void in stopes were unreliable and often failed to gain the designed rise height. The number of firings per stope was having an adverse impact on the ground conditions at the stope brows, impeding stope productivity.Through practical experimentation with longhole drill rigs, box hole rigs and development drill rigs as well as trialling new methods in conjunction with reviewing drill hole data, drill hole accuracy was observed to be an issue on-site. Innovative dragging methods such as the reverse drag, combined with a slope instead of a vertical face on the rear of stopes, have improved dragging and a reduction of firings per stope, enabling larger production blasts.The methods trialled and subsequently implemented at AGM have facilitated the mine achieving budgeted targets for six consecutive quarters. Digital photogrammetry is revolutionising the task of geotechnical mapping of jointed rock masses and has greatly increased in popularity and sophistication in recent years. Modern commercially available digital photogrammetry software systems can provide geotechnical practitioners with a user friendly tool for rapid data acquisition. The data can be acquired remotely from large exposure areas, some of which may be otherwise out of reach due to restrictions on time, access or safety.Photogrammetry is a complimentary technology to discrete fracture network (DFN) modelling because it can provide the large, statistically significant, spatially located geotechnical data sets required to produce the most robust results. It also provides the flexibility to selectively map structures at a range of scales, depending on the focus of the DFN modelling.Integration of the interpreted rock structure data derived from photogrammetry with modern DFN modelling methods really advances the rock engineering process. The ability to generate 3D fracture models driven by the statistical structural data and conditioned to the features observed by the photogrammetry yields a synthetic rock mass on which improved design methods can be applied. The mining industry has expanded significantly in the Pacific Region over the past two decades through a mix of new developments and brownfields expansions of existing operations. Despite this overall success there are also a number of well publicised examples of less than successful minerals ventures. These problem developments highlight the fact that success cannot be taken for granted and that rigorous planning and attention to detail is essential. The dominant growth has come through expansion of existing businesses, notably alumina, iron ore and coal, achieved through both efficiency gains on existing plant and step change capacity additions such as new mines and/or expanded processing plant. This expansion has largely been linked to increased market opportunities. The major issues are the quality and extent of the host resource, achieving the market targets, and the efficiency of the expansion effort. There can be also a range of site specific issues which need to be addressed. The development of new greenfields operations is often more complex as it can bring a wide range of new issues. Depending on the nature of the development, and the companies involved, these can extend from initial financing through to obtaining a market position. Incorporating major new technology and/or establishing infrastructure and attracting staff to remote locations can also add significant challenges. This paper outlines many of the critical factors which need to be considered prior to proceeding with major expansions or greenfields developments. These will be linked to a number of developments in the region over the past decade.

Quay Magnesium Limited (QMG) listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in late September 2004 having raised approximately A$30 million with the object of designing, constructing, commissioning and operating a 15 000 tpa magnesium alloy production facility in Nanjing, China. Site construction commenced in February 2005, with installation of all major components completed by the end of October 2005. Hot commissioning was simultaneously commenced with the final stages of installation, leading to the first stage of continuous ingot casting by mid November 2005. Since that time, ramp-up to the name plate capacity has been undertaken. This presentation highlights some of the more significant technical and logistical hurdles that have had to be overcome in order to meet the high quality product specifications required by a range of QMG customers.

"With the recent advancement in drill core imaging systems, a large volume of high resolution drill core images can now be rapidly collected and mineralogically classified. This paper introduces a novel semi-automated method for rapid prediction of process engineering parameters from this type of image. The aim is to allow for a rapid and low-cost assessment of the ore processing variability within a mineral deposit with a reduced amount of metallurgical test work. This method will see its application primarily in the project evaluation phase, where proper evaluation of the processing variability of the orebody normally requires a prolonged and costly metallurgical test work program. Applying this image-based texture analysis method on the mineralogical classified drill core images, the ores are classified according to their textures. For each engineering parameter, a small number of physical test work is required to produce a data set for training and testing of the predictive model. This paper describes a hybrid ventilation system, which uses secondary fans that also act as de-facto primary fans to extract fresh airflow from the mine intake raise system. Also discussed are the associated problems such as uncontrolled recirculation, inadequate decline airflow, fire safety issues, prolonged blast fume clearance times, high air temperatures in main access routes, neutralisation of mine air cooling by heat from secondary distribution fans, increased ventilation system complexity, reduced flexibility and high pressure differentials (which cause safety issues with personnel access and reduce secondary ventilation system performance).Practical suggestions are provided on options to avoid these problems listed.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2013.
