Geometallurgy is often a misunderstood and poorly defined concept. The first thing the paper will attempt is to provide a definition of geometallurgy. Ultimately this paper has been written to provide guidance to geologists, mining engineers and processing professionals as to what geometallurgy means in the crucial early phases of a potential mining project between the time of discovery and the time of commencing construction, should this occur. The paper covers the options available for conducting a geometallurgical study of a resource or orebody, appropriate to the level of definition required in the projectÆs development cycle. The paper will then describe how the geometallurgical information generated is subsequently used in calculations, planning and preparation of reports designed to inform and reassure stakeholders, such as the market. Ultimately in a successful project, appropriate options adopted in the development phase will form the basis of an ongoing geometallurgical program that links the major site disciplines for the good of the operation.CITATION:David, D, 2013. Safety is a key value in most leading mining companies. Despite years of effort, and significant expense in ‘programs’, operating sites seem to have been left with no real improvement in either the elimination of fatalities or sustained reduction in injuries.Safety systems and processes have grown and evolved, often to the point where they have become overly complicated and marginally useful.MMG Limited, following the consolidation of its Australian operations under a single management structure, undertook a program to effect real and sustained change in its approach to managing safety. The program aimed at improving safety by better engaging its workforce and by making safety processes simple, useful and effective. It defined the role of the supervisor in creating safe work, the role of the people doing work and the role of safe work methods.A safety diagnostic tool was developed to assess site against safety-critical mindsets, behaviours, cultures and systems. The outcome of the diagnostic is considered by the organisation to be the true lead indicator of safety performance.While still a work-in-progress, the program at the Australian Operations of MMG Limited shows that challenging common paradigms in safety management can create real change in safety performance.CITATION:Webb, M E, 2016. Mine dust is the most serious occupation hazard in coalmines. And many coal workers suffer from pneumoconiosis because of long-term inhalation of respirable dust. Reducing the dust concentration of workplaces by effective technical means is an important way to prevent coal worker’s pneumoconiosis (CWP). In order to overcome deficiencies in existing dust control technology for underground mining, especially the disadvantage of water spray technology mounted on roadheaders or continuous miners, the authors developed an integrated dust suppression technology utilising foam for fully mechanised heading faces. This paper presents an overview of the principles, materials, equipment and application of this technology. Among these, a jet type foaming device and a green foaming agent were developed, which can realise the goal of efficient preparation of foam. In addition, an arc fan nozzle used for foam spraying was invented, which can effectively cover and enwrap the dust produced by the roadheader at the cutting point and achieve the goal of efficient utilisation of foam. This dust suppression application of the proposed foam technology was investigated on fully mechanised heading faces. The results show that the dust concentration was cut down significantly with a dust suppression efficiency of greater than 85 per cent, an increase of over 30 percentage points compared to the water spray system. This study demonstrates that this foam technology can play an important role in dust suppression on fully mechanised heading faces, which provides an important method to improve the working environment and protect coal workers’ health.CITATION:Wang, D and Wang, H, 2015. PIP is regularly engaged in businesses where Greenfield Capital Projects are under- delivering on the expected business case. In most of these projects, we can identify that rigorous review has been carried out on the design and financial cost elements and substantial reporting is maintained to Boards on progress versus plan of project completion and cost. However, in all sites of this nature that we have worked at, the planning, design and execution of the operational elements or æwiringÆ of the organisation have fallen short and resulted in significant extra cost or opportunity cost (lost tonnage or quality) during start-up. When compared to the amount of planning and resources that have been poured into the capital side, the ledger on the æwiringÆ side is typically fairly sparse. This presentation outlines the importance of running a disciplined, rigorous process to prepare the human and wiring side of a start-up to ensure rapid start-ups and put the site on the pathway to high performance. It gives an outline of the rigorous process PIP has used with projects to ensure excellent start-ups.

With the iron ore industry in Australia producing hundreds of millions of tonnes of ore per annum, the associated costs of these operations extend into the billions. It is no surprise in the current economic climate that more and more companies are looking into different ways of optimizing their costs to keep their sites operational. One way of improving operations is the use of electronic initiating systems like i-kon and Uni tronic detonators. These systems have been used around the world to improve current practices and optimize drill and blast costs. However, these systems have yet to make an impact upon the iron ore sector in Australia. Some of the potential improvements include:pattern expansion and a subsequent reduction in drilling and explosive costs;improved fragmentation and hence increased dig rates, thereby driving $/tonne down;embracing the 'mine-to-mill' concept by reducing the downstream costs of crushing and milling;improving the overall condition of pit walls and floors, leading to a safer working environment in which optimal haulage performance can be achieved; and improvements in vibration management around heritage sites and critical infrastructure, thereby saving the cost of relocation works. This paper introduces some of these concepts and the process of making the changes leading to potential savings from the improvements, using various examples as proof of the concepts.

Variable bench heights, interaction with underground workings and a steeply dipping orebody are challenges faced daily by geologists at Xstrata Zinc’s Black Star Open Cut (BSOC) Zinc/Lead/Silver mine in Mount Isa, Queensland.BSOC has been in operation since late 2004 and was developed to extract the surface extents of the Zn/Pb/Ag mineralisation mined in the underground lead mine. To date many large scale stopes and extensive development drives have been intersected and successfully mined. The stratigraphically hosted orebodies strike in a north-north westerly direction, dipping ~75° west. Ore production from the pit is currently at 4.5 Mt/a.Historically, sampling was conducted using a multiple spear technique from blasthole cuttings. This method proved to be relatively reliable when blasting benches at a consistent height, but a requirement to vary bench heights to safely collapse and then mine through underground workings reduced sample representivity to unacceptable levels.The purchase and commissioning of a production rig which had been converted for reverse circulation (RC) has allowed for the flexibility of a small rig, with the capacity to easily drill 48 m holes while ensuring sample quality. Sample quality is not the only benefit of introducing RC grade control. By collecting grade control data well in advance, informed decisions can be made by planning, drill and blast and mining departments weeks beforehand, rather than hours before firing. Additionally, seeking operational value to offset higher drilling costs has proved positive with benefits including increased confidence in orebody wireframes, accurate tonnage and grade for proceeding five benches along with the ability to representatively test metallurgical response on a tight grid spacing.

Ridgeway Deeps is a block cave (BC) located down dip of the operating Ridgeway sublevel cave (SLC) mine. The BC is located approximately 210 m vertically below the lowest SLC level and approximately 1100 m below surface. Due to the mine layout containing a number of common pieces of key infrastructure the activities of both were interlinked.When investigating project construction options for the BC, a number of potential risks were identified including a conflict of priorities between operational and project deliverables and the varying safety and work methods between an owner mining approach in the SLC and a potential contractor workforce in the BC. This led to a review of the construction philosophy and the opportunity to utilise the existing SLC workforce as the basis of all activities in the mine. It was identified that a number of synergies existed with the current SLC operators and mine supervision including common work practices and the opportunity to build on the unique SLC skills of the operators and supervisors which could then be used at other Newcrest caving mines.With the commitment to this philosophy of building on the existing SLC crews and supervision the number of employees reporting through the superintendent underground operations grew from 95 to 245. This increase led to a restructuring of the reporting and work requirements of the superintendent, foremen and shift bosses. In order for the foreman and shift bosses to focus on running the larger crew numbers for the full 12 hour shift the mine superintendent became a pseudo human resources manager taking over all non-mine focused activities including overtime allocation and work and behavioural performance management. In simple terms, ensuring there were competent bums on seats when and where required. As the additional workers were recruited to top up the existing employee numbers, their employment history was used to place them in the most suitable roles. For example, those with building industry experience were placed on the civil construction crews and those with a farming background were used as truck drivers, nippers or on the service crews. To cope with the increased number of new starters a number of key personnel were seconded from the crews into the training group to act as on shift trainers. This initially caused a reduction in mine performance as the main operators were reassigned but it proved a valid move as the time for new operators to reach acceptable levels was significantly reduced with safe operating standards being maintained. This paper discusses how the Ridgeway Deeps Project was delivered on time and under budget whilst at the same time retaining its position globally as an operation to be benchmarked against.

The Sangdong Tungsten/Molybdenum Deposit is located in the Republic of Korea and was discovered in 1916. At this time Korea was a colony of Japan. It was mined for two years after discovery closing in 1918. Full production recommenced in 1933, and from that point until 1945, it was the major source of tungsten for armour plate for the Japanese military. After World War 2 the US government ran the mine until late 1946. The mine operation then passed to Korean ownership but production ceased during the Korean War and did not recommence until late 1953. The mine ceased operation in 1992 due to low metal prices. From the late 1960s to the time of closure, Sangdong was the largest tungsten mine in the world (Kim, 2002). An understanding of changing mining methods over time has been critical in assessing the potential of redeveloping the Sangdong Deposit.

The development and application of new effective environmentally friendly reagents for the flotation of thin and ultrathin mineral components is an urgent task. The analysis of the nomenclature of chemicals, including flotation reagents and flocculants, showed that water-soluble polymers (WSP) might be used in flotation separation of fine grinding products containing non-ferrous and precious metals. Water-soluble polymers that are responsive to temperature changes are the most attractive as reagents during flotation. These are the thermo-responsive polymers or thermomorphic polymers. The presence of nitrogen and oxygen atoms in the polymer molecule contributes to the formation of a coordination bond with non-ferrous and precious metals. A research conducted at the ICEMR RAS within the framework of the scientific school of Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Chanturia helped to develop a method of flotation of finely ground mineral particles containing valuable components using modified thermomorphic polymers. The paper focuses on the experimental study of poly (vinyl caprolactam) (PVC) as a flotation reagent for gold recovery from finely ground mineral products. PVC is a ready-made water-soluble thermosensitive polymer that does not require complex synthesis. PVC has a high ability to form complexes in an aqueous environment when heated. According to experimental data, the polymer interacts with gold nanoparticles, contributing to the extraction of gold from fine mineral products and the tailings that makes it perspective as an additional flotation agent for the processing of gold-containing ores.

The article presents results of thermodynamic calculations and laboratory studies, focusing on the cobalt behaviour during oxidative smelting of copper-nickel mattes. The compositions of the studied solutions are related to the products formed during the second stage of the converting process of copper-nickel matte at the Nadezhdinsky Metallurgical Plant (NMP) of MMC Norilsk Nickel company. These sulfide products typically contain from 1.5 to 12 wt per cent of iron. The obtained experimental results and thermodynamic calculations indicate that adjusting the CaO ratio to increase the proportion of CaO or complete replacement of SiO2 with fluxes containing CaO leads to a significant increase in cobalt recovery rates in the matte phase (with an iron concentration of 2.5 wt per cent) raising them from 30 per cent to 45 per cent. Meanwhile, the recovery rates of copper and nickel remain constant.

This paper outlines a laboratory-based design method, founded in critical state soil mechanics, for identification of an appropriate compaction specification to ensure dilative conditions prevail across the design TSF stress range. The method makes use of the critical state line (CSL) and consolidation tests prepared at varying compactive efforts. The CSL and consolidation curves are plotted together in e-log p’ space, with the compaction curves transformed from vertical effective stress to mean effective stress using the coefficient of earth pressure at rest (K0). Consideration is given to the sensitivity of K0 as it is generally not available during the design phase. An example of the design method is illustrated with laboratory data.

The demand for environmentally friendly commercial explosives has increased globally due to concerns regarding environmentally friendly mining activities. Ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) and bulk emulsion explosives (BEE) are two kinds of civil explosives primarily used in coal and mineral mining in Indonesia. Indonesia is one of the leading countries in coal and mineral mining production and export, with abundant resources; therefore, the consumption of civil explosives such as ANFO and BEE is enormous. The selection and evaluation of commercial explosives are mostly done on the commercial and technical side, and no assessment is made based on environmental aspects. This preliminary study evaluates the economic value and environmental burden of greenhouse gas emissions produced by ANFO and BEE and determines which type of explosives is more environmentally friendly. The combination of environmental and economic indicators, eco-efficiency (E/E), was selected to investigate BEE’s economic and environmental performance compared to ANFO. The life cycle of greenhouse gas emissions of BEE and AN was determined using previously available studies and simple calculations. The cost of the product or explosives was used to represent the economic value. The E/E results showed that environmental and economic sustainability could be enhanced using BEE.

Single wavelength fluorescence sensing has been used in the preconcentration of ores for many years in situations where it is typically specific to the mineral of interest. Examples of fluorescence sensing include the sorting of diamonds in diamond mines and the sorting of scheelite in tungsten ores. However, the number of minerals that show useful single wavelength fluorescence properties in the visible spectrum is relatively small, so the application of fluorescence sensing is currently limited to niche application in the minerals industry. Recent developments at the University of Adelaide have focussed upon extending fluorescence signal measurements into the infrared spectrum, as well as investigating multi-wavelength fluorescence known as up-conversion fluorescence. These techniques may not only significantly increase the number of minerals that exhibit fluorescence properties suitable for both identification and sensor-based sorting, but also provide mineral-specific signatures of higher quality than previously attainable. This paper details the research work carried out by the University of Adelaide and funded by CRC ORE to develop a mineral-specific fluorescence sensor. The sensor targets two fluorine bearing minerals, fluorite and fluorapatite, that are common in many base metal ores such as porphyry copper ores and silver/lead/zinc ores. Fluorine is a known penalty element in mineral products derived from these ores, so mining companies need to monitor and control the amount of fluorine in their final product to keep it below commercially agreed specifications. Currently there is no real time sensor capable of monitoring fluorine in the ore feed so monitoring and control is carried out using time-consuming standard sampling and off-line laboratory measurements. The development and application of a real time fluorine sensor will enable the mining companies to monitor and control fluorine levels in the plant, greatly reducing the time and cost associated with producing their mineral concentrates within the prescribed specifications.

This paper outlines the contributing factors to a series of erroneous Mineral Resource estimates which led to considerable loss, including significant reduction of mine life and consequently a large write-down of asset value. The error prompted divestment of the mineral asset in the short-term by the owners, a major mining company. There were multiple and complex contributions to the result: • The mine was undergoing a transition in the deposit geology with increasing depth that was not accommodated in the models. Early indications of the geological transition in initial drilling were generally unrecognised in resource modelling. The shortcomings of the models became apparent with increasing infill drilling and subsequent production reconciliation. • There was a lack of recognition of, and confidence in, site-based input and skills by corporate technical management. The site had a reputation internally for over-delivery to plan early in its life and that supported the anticipation of ongoing metal delivery into the mine plan by management. • A corporate lack of confidence in site being able to adequately domain the mineralisation led to the use of a CIK domaining process, rather than one which was geologically based. This domaining process led to gross over-statement of mineralisation trends reflected in the subsequent OK estimate. • Timelines on the outsourced estimation process were so short that validation was not possible. Obvious errors in the estimate versus data were not able to be used to correct the issues and the site’s Competent Person sign-off occurred without adequate checks. This case study is presented to reinforce the concept that Mineral Resource estimates are not solely based on the ability of the Competent Person to satisfactorily guide the process. There are usually multiple complex issues in the estimation process which need to be recognised and considered in judging reconciliations of model to actual.

A common problem in the mining industry is that company geologists can operate in relative isolation to the rest of the company (Jones and Moorhead, 2011). This may result in poor knowledge transfer and often priority conflicts with geology, operations and project departments. This problem is amplified by the acquisition of mineralogy capabilities and other metallurgical (met) test work undertaken by many companies in order to solve for complex orebody problems. Met data is often not located and viewed in 3D space so that geologists and engineers can create and work with geometallurgical (geomet) models (Bye, 2006). Visualisation of data in an interactive graphical 3D model provides a bridge enabling met professionals to collaborate with engineers and geologists to provide a common understanding of the relevance of geomet data.In recognition of this problem, Newcrest has undertaken an effective collaboration strategy to improve internal and external engagement through the use of large visualisation displays (Jones, 2009). The displays are underpinned by IT systems and information management practices that recognise the needs of underlying disciplines. Today it is generally understood within Newcrest that this is required to improve decision-making, deliver faster cycle times and improve governance.Collaboration in companies has been generally associated with the introduction of new IT functions (IBM, 2008). The formation of magmatic oxide ore deposits hosted in chemically-evolved layered gabbroic intrusions is attributed to a variety of petrological processes, but there is little to no consensus on the general applicability of each model. Complicating the matter further is that many layered gabbroic intrusions are spatially and temporally associated with alkaline A-type granites, suggesting that there is a petrogenetic relationship between the two types of chemically different rocks. Our experimental results show that petrological modelling using a starting composition of high-Ti basalt from the Emeishan large igneous province can produce evolved silicic liquids that resemble the compositions of microgranular enclaves from the syenitic unit of the bimodal, oxide ore-bearing Baima igneous complex. The experimental results confirm that bimodal gabbro-granitoid complexes can form from a common parental magma and that early crystallisation of Ti-rich magnetite can explain the formation of the oxide ore deposits in the lower parts of the layered gabbroic intrusions. We conclude that crystallisation of a typical high-Ti basaltic parental magma can produce world-class giant magmatic oxide ore deposits and that the occurrence of some alkaline granites may be an indicator of their presence.CITATION:Shellnutt, J G, Hsia, T W-Y, Liu, T-C and Iizuka, Y, 2015. Water has played a key role in the Pilbara’s 60-year history of iron ore operations. In contrast to many of the current-day mining environments, iron ore mining was initially hosted by geological formations that were typically above the water table. Such mining operations required no dewatering or dewatering at rates that were less than mine and mining township requirements. The challenge for these operations was not pit dewatering but water supply for mining operations and municipal supply for nascent mining towns.The current industry sees new deposit styles being increasingly targeted, including channel iron and Marra Mamba Formation deposits. These deposits are often lower in the landscape and can require extensive dewatering. Furthermore, increased water demand for ore beneficiation has resulted in major programs of water-supply borefield development. Added to this is the emergence of magnetite projects and their significant levels of water use in ore beneficiation.The large volumes of water that are being extracted to support Pilbara iron ore mining is attracting attention. The Western Australian Department of Water has recently commissioned a study to assess the potential use of surplus mine water as a medium- to long-term supply for irrigated agriculture.This paper outlines the changing landscape of water management in Pilbara iron ore operations and explores strategies for maximising mining productivity. Most new engineers in the mining industry do not realise the importance of legal obligations. During investigations the first question you are asked is: Do you have any proof or evidence? The smallest detail in an underground notebook or a diary entry is able to be used as your proof and/or evidence. The importance of a paper trail is often undervalued and overlooked when you first enter the industry. As a new engineer, all too often your legal obligations, including your duty of care are not given enough consideration. Whose job is it to inform you of what your legal obligations are and when do they end? Everyone has legal obligations at every level of the industry, from graduate to mine manager. The level of these responsibilities varies depending on the position that you hold. When you first start in the industry you need to understand what your responsibilities are and how you are expected to discharge them, whether they are memos, databases or senior sign-offs, etc. In order to fulfil your obligations you must first discharge your own obligation, which in turn discharges those of your department and ultimately those of the mine. As a graduate engineer in the mining industry what I have learnt about my own legal obligations has come directly from my own experience, which will form the basis of this paper.

"The Caijiaying lead zinc mine is located in China, north-west of Beijing, in Hebei Province. The region experiences severe winters, below -35°C, and warm summers, up to 30°C. The mine and concentrator commenced operations in the second half of 2005 with a conventional tailings disposal system consisting of a tailings dam with peripheral ring main discharge and central water recovery. A second similar dam sharing one common wall was added later. In view of the extreme winter conditions tailings lines and ring mains plus spigots, together with return water lines, require insulation and electrical trace heating. The volume of process water trapped as ice in the tailings dam ponds each winter is significant. This seasonal variation presents a major difficulty in the management of process water availability. Although Caijiaying is an underground mine there was no backfill plant at the start of operations. As plant throughput increased more quickly than originally anticipated, tailings storage capacity became a prime concern. The construction of a backfill plant in 2007 reduced the pressure on surface tailings storage area requirements, but as suitable land on which to construct further tailings storage was both expensive and difficult to acquire, a more efficient use of the available area was required. Dry tailings storage, where flotation tailings are filtered to provide an immediate return of process water plus ‘dry’ tailings filter cake for stacking, provided an answer to both the land area required, and the water management difficulties. The paper details the reasoning behind the change and the benefits obtained at Caijiaying by moving from ‘wet’ tailings storage to ‘dry’ tailings storage.Citation:Waldram, J T and Jia, R, 2016. Full-stream mechanised sampling apparatus, that collect a full cross-sectional increment from the complete screen discharge, will always be the preferred option for sampling screen overflows. However, the reality is that provisions for automated sampling are rarely, if ever, provided at the discharges of individual screens within beneficiation plants.Sampling from the discharge of high capacity vibrating screens, especially multi-slope screens, is subject to sampling bias, due to the stratification of the ore that occurs on the vibrating screen deck. The stratification in the vibrating bed translates to a stratified falling stream at the discharge end of the screen, typically with smaller particles at the back of the falling stream and large particles at the front of the falling stream (Figure 1).The chemical and physical characteristics of heterogeneous ore (mineral or coal) particles vary significantly with particle size. If samples do not correctly reflect the source material size distribution, they will be biased and the resulting analytical/assay data will not reflect the actual physical nor chemical characteristics of the source material.Prior published data for coal preparation research (Australian Coal Association Research Program) has demonstrated that a bias appears to exist for samples collected from high capacity multi-slope screens.A new form of sampling scoop has been developed with the aim of overcoming this issue.Bias was evaluated at a coal preparation plant by comparing the desliming screen overflow size distribution to that for æreferenceÆ coal preparation plant feed samples collected using the recognised stopped-belt technique. The study procured 20 sets of comparison samples in order to ensure statistical relevance.Two forms of sampling device were employed for the multislope screen discharge.A conventional square aperture scoop was demonstrated to exhibit a significant coarse bias, in that the resulting samples exhibited a significantly coarser size distribution compared to the reference samples. In other words it was evident that the conventional scoop æfavouredÆ material from the front of the falling stream.A new æcollapsibleÆ sample scoop was evaluated in parallel, and its samples were found to exhibit no relevant bias.CITATION:Atkinson, B W and Swanson, A R, 2012.
