WINDING engines are one of the most important units in the equipment of a mine. Upon the winding machinery depends not only the output of the mine, but it supplies in most cases the only means by which workmen enter and return from the mine, and consequently the utmost care and attention is desirable in its design. The efficiency of a direct acting winding engine, as a machine is very low. In other words, the proportion between the useful work performed and the actual work the engine is capable of performing (under the most favourable conditions) is very small. The reasons for this are:-1. The intermittent nature of the work; the engine is stopped from 20 to 25 %(or even more) of the time which would constitute a useful day's work.2. The large amount of power that is absorbed applying the brakes to bring the load to rest.3. That the net useful load raised is small in comparison with dead load to be lifted, and the parts to be set in motion.4. That, owing to the frequent stops, initial condensation in the cylinders is always greater than in a continuously running engine, whilst radiation from steam pipes, valve chests, &c., goes on whether the engine is running or...

In the last 40 years nuclear energy has taken its place as a major source of electricity worldwide. It now produces 17 per cent of the world's electricity and could conceivably produce a higher proportion, to displace some six billion tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year. Concerns about global warming and environmental quality now underline the virtues of nuclear electricity among alternative sources of energy. Global electricity demand is rapidly increasing as a proportion of total energy usage. The proportion has doubled since 1960 and the demand is expected to increase at least 75 per cent between now and 2020. The source of this extra capacity, and the replacement of present capacity, raise questions with major resource and environmental implications. Today nuclear energy is a mature technology. Over 1200 nuclear reactors have been built and operated, some of these have been decommissioned, and among the 440 reactors in commercial operation the first advanced reactors are now entering service. Some 8000 reactor-years of operation have, with the sole exception of Chernobyl, shown nuclear energy to be extremely safe and reliable. High-level wastes are being managed properly and in different parts of the world two strategies are applied to this. Australia has a major role as a long-term supplier of uranium, since it holds almost 30 per cent of the world's reserves. This, along with an impending sellers' market for uranium, is making it an opportune time to develop new mines here. However, after several decades of concern about civil nuclear energy contributing to the arms race, we now have uranium liberated from nuclear weapons stockpiles being diluted for use in civil reactors, which will supplement ex-mine supply. The public acceptability of nuclear energy remains the critical factor in its future and hence in ours.

Australia's first offshsore well was spudded in on 27th December 1964 and resulted in the discovery of the Barracouta gas field. Further exploratory drilling led to the discovery of the Marlin gas field in December 1965, the Kingfish oil field in April 1967 and the Hblibut oil field in June. 1967. In September 1968, a small oil reservoir was found in a sand below the main Barracouta'gas reservoir. The Snapper gas field was discovered in May, 1968 Information on exploration activities associated with the discovery of oil and gas in the Bass Strait area may be found in the paper, "Exploration in the Gippsland, Bass and Otway Basins, Australia" by B. M. Hopkins. _ Development of the commercial fields is being undertaken on an equal participation basis by Hematite Petroleum Pty. Ltd. and Esso Exploration and Production Australia Inc. Esso Standard Oil (Australia) Ltd. is responsible for the design, construction and operation of the production facilities.

The Mount Morgan minesite, located approximately 40 km SW of Rockhampton in Central Queensland, comprises 270 ha of unrehabilitated land which is the currently the major source of acid mine drainage run-off and seepage to the adjacent Dee River. Additionally, the minesite hosts an Open Cut Pit which contains 9000 ML of acidic and metal-rich water. In the absence of active management of water in the pit, there is a 50 per cent probability of an uncontrolled spill occurring in future years. The development of a contingency plan for management of overflow from the pit in the short term, has incorporated findings from numerous studies relevant to the Open Cut Pit including, but not limited to, water balance, contaminant source identification, toxicity testing, water quality profiling and limnological modelling, and estimates of probability of overflow. Extensive stakeholder consultation and peer review were also undertaken during the formulation of the contingency plan. The medium-term goal of lowering the water level in the pit to reduce the current high probability (50 per cent) of uncontrolled overflow to acceptable levels of risk is proposed to be achieved by a campaign of chemical water treatment. The treated water will be discharged to the Dee River, and sludge returned to the pit. The methodologies used for the selection and development of the water treatment process, that is proposed to involve treatment with lime, are described. Water treatment is the short- to medium-term component of a long range rehabilitation plan for achieving a negative pit water balance, and sustainable management of acidic water across the whole site. Achieving this ultimate goal will involve: reducing the inputs of water to the Open Cut Pit such that the annual water balance is zero or net negative, thus removing the need for water treatment in perpetuity; maximising, by surface rehabilitation works, the quality of run-off reporting to the Dee River; and minimising the volume of acidic seepage reporting to the seepage interception system. Possible strategies for achieving this long range goal consistent with overall site rehabilitation objectives are currently being developed and costed.

Sophisticated control systems require sufficient and reliable information from the process to be controlled. At the Pyhasalmi concentrator two novel measurements, a particle size indicator (PSI) and a mill level monitor (MLM), have led to significant progress in the control of the grinding circuit. The PSI and the MLM measurements have brought additional information from the process. The PSI has been an absolute prerequisite for determining the overall grinding circuit efficiency and the design of the integrated grinding and flotation control system. The MLM measurement has enabled studies on the volumetric filling of a mill to be utilised for maximising the mill throughput. The paper describes the operation principles of the PSI and MLM devices and the additional process information received. The results of a metallurgical pre-control audit are discussed and finally the design of the integrated control system is outlined.

In order to counter the massive increase in the level of near gravity material that would follow the reduction in dense-medium cyclone separation density at B.H.P. Slab and Plate Product Division's B and C coal preparation plants, "wing tank" systems to control medium density to within ¦0.005RD units have been installed. However, despite very precise density control, cyclone metallurgical performance has been less than satisfactory. The approaches taken to identify the causes of this poor performance and to justify alterations in operational and maintenance practices are presented.

In the first part of this paper, the principal sources of dilution during underground evaluation and mining are discussed, then definitions of ore dilution currently in use are analysed. These definitions vary depending on the authors. Ten different analytical expressions of dilution percentage currently exist. It is demonstrated, with the help of a numerical example for a given mining condition, that dilution percentage results vary considerably and that they depend on the definition used. This situation makes it difficult to compare different results regarding the dilution problem, often because some of the terms used are contradictory. A new ore dilution evaluation methodology is proposed, replacing the ten different analytical expressions by only two: the planned dilution factor related to the stoping selectivity, done at the mine planning level, and the additional dilution factor related to the efficiency of the dilution control measures during stoping operations. The conclusion shows that the use of this methodology would be a definitive asset in planning, in stoping operations follow-up, and in future costs comparison studies between mining operations.

The operation of quarries for the production of crushed stone and aggregates, depends heavily on rock blasting efficiency, which usually represents a major share of total production costs. After investigating the causes of this situation, a series of technical aspects have been detected, and they are described for the purpose of contributing to the minimization of costs, which also reduces the effects of blasting on the environment. Utilization of empirical design methods, of inadequate explosive types, and of erroneous drilling pauems with respect to rock properties, are the main factors to be corrected, as a consequence of poor engineering criteria, with scarce use of computational methods and field instrumentation. Several concepts of blasting optimization are pointed out, and their application to industrial operations in a Portuguese limestone quarry indicated clear trends for the reduction of production costs, as well as some of the deleterious consequences of blasting on the environment.

Golden Crown Mine is a narrow vein gold mine producing 75000 tpa. Production has been predominantly by shrink stoping using hand held machine and airleg. Bogging from these stopes is done with Toro 150 LHD units.Previously the standard development method consisted of developing a sill drive, a footwall drive and millholes every 7 m. This meant that for every metre of ore development, 2 m of waste development was required.

This paper deals briefly with productivity-enhancing advances in shaft sinking technology in South Africa post-World War II in general and the developments and application of long rounds since the 1980s in particular and is amply illustrated.It touches on the conversion to circular section, concrete lined shafts, the introduction of tungsten carbide drill bit inserts and grab lashing; expounds the rationale driving the development of longer rounds; and then describes the evolution of long rounds using hand-held and mechanically mounted rockdrills in South Africa and Canada by both local and foreign contractors. The recent experience gained on the sinking of the South Deep Main Shaft follows. Results obtained from this experiment are tabulated and commented upon. The paper concludes with the postulation of æwhat nextÆ and æwhere toÆ scenarios. Addenda include a list of shaft rounds in excess of three metres in length blasted in the Main Shaft at South Deep and their results, typical round design, manufacturerÆs specifications for the 6 m shaft jumbo and rock drills.

The gabbroid-hosted nickel sulphide deposits of the East Kimberley constitutes one of Australia's most prospective emerging nickel provinces. Sally Malay Nickel NL (SMN), a wholly owned subsidiary of Gindalbie Gold NL, has established the East Kimberley Nickel Project (EKNP). The EKNP project tenements cover about 2000 sq km. The tenements cover the northern potion of a corridor containing mineralised or potentially mineralised layered mafic-ultramafic intrusions which includes the Ni-Cu-Co sulphide deposits at Sally Malay and Keller Creek. The Sally Malay deposit is located 225 km south-south-west of Kununurra (Figure 1). The sealed Great Northern Highway passes 3 km to the east of the deposit.

A failure of the Pit IA highwall in July 1989 led Newcrest Mining Ltd's Telfer Gold Mine to commence underground operations approximately 12 months ahead of schedule. The failure presented four major challenges to management: 1. how to maximise the recovery of the Middle Vale Reef (MVR) in the open pit: 2. how to minimise the risk to personnel involved in the extraction of the remaining open pit ore; 3. how to avoid disruption to ore supply: and 4. how to maintain a permanent and safe means of accessing the underground operations from the base of the pit. The risks associated with meeting these challenges were minimised through the installation of a complex network of real time slope monitoring equipment. These monitors were connected to an alarm system which was combined with detailed operational procedures to be carried out in the event of a highwall alarm being triggered. The accuracy with which the risk of failure has been managed was demonstrated recently when the onset of a second failure was initially identified some 13 months prior to its ultimate collapse in October 1992. The location, timing and size of the failure was able to be predicted allowing appropriate precautionary measures to be taken to ensure safety of access to the underground portal and pumping equipment in the base of the pit. This paper reviews the sequence of events leading to both the July 1989 and October 1992 failures of the Pit 1A highwall and the monitoring equipment and procedures used to identify, quantify and manage the risk to personnel operating in the base of the pit.

This paper analyses the technologies presently being researched in mines, and discusses their utilisation as major contributors in the underground mining of coal in Australia over the next 20 years. It describes the problems that underground mining of the year 2000 will face and the possible solutions to those problems based upon results of present day research. Methods, equipment and organisational requirements are outlined. Developments in micro-electronics, computerisation and monitoring will require a new look into human resource development, education and training, and organisation to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Development in the theory and practice of hearth drainage is reviewed. Difficulties in the hearth drainage were re- newed during late sixties and early seventies when the size of a blast furnace and the top pressure were increased to result in the increase in tapping rate. Hearth drainage was improved first by in- creased number of tapping and then decreased tapping rate as it was predicted by theoretical studies. State of the coke bed in the hearth, e.g., 'floating' or 'sitting-on' the hearth bottom, is discussed in relation with influential factors on it and its influence on the furnace operation. The 'sitting-on' coke bed is to be aimed at for the consistent furnace working and for the lower rate of erosion of the hearth refractory. As the continuous tapping became standard prac- tice in large blast furnaces, the interest in the basic research renewed. Prospect of the further research including mathematical modelling of the hearth drainage is discussed.

"Anglo American Thermal Coal conducted a high level study of all of its underground collieriesto determine if there were electrical power saving opportunities at the main fan stations.A systems approach to electrical power savings was used to identify potential savings in the various components of a primary ventilation system. Furthermore, only technological interventions were considered to obtain electrical power savings. From generic technological driven electrical power saving strategies four energy savings strategies were identifi ed, namely potential overall reduction in ventilation volume, improved underground air utilisation, optimisation of fan-set effi ciency and potential fan drift design optimisation. The study indicated the colliery (say Colliery D, Shaft A) that showed most potential in the four technology driven energy savings strategies. A detail study was undertaken at Colliery D, Shaft A to increase the confi dence level and the study confi rmed that up to 45 per cent of the main fan absorbed power can be saved (475 kW) with an estimated capital payback period of 18 months. The study clearly showed that an integrated approach to optimise the entire mine ventilation system has great potential for power saving, and that a clear, well -defi ned methodology will be applicable to similar underground collieries. The Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) employs the technologies of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The use of backscattered electron images to define phase boundaries produces very high resolution image analysis and subsequently detailed and accurate particle images and data output. The mineralogy, elemental deportment, grain size, liberation characteristics and mineral associations of a large number of samples can be described. The MLA uses a comprehensive set of analysis methods to meet a wide range of applications. The data from ore characteristion projects completed during feasibility studies are important aids for effective plant design. The MLA can be used to establish variation in the mineralogy of an orebody, identify and quantify the deportment of deleterious elements, and provide valuable information to support comminution and flotation test work. In established plants the MLA data is an important component of plant survey work and monthly composite samples. Changes in feed characteristics and/or operating conditions can be monitored and solutions to any deterioration in recovery and grade performance found. The MLA has extensive applications in the minerals industry. Rare and precious metal samples can be accurately measured using high-resolution grey-scale images. Several new measurement techniques have been developed to perform rapid searches of a large number of samples to provide efficient and accurate analyses of fine-grain, low concentrate material. Quantifying the mineral variability in mineral sands operations is essential to maximising grades and recovery. The MLA produces particle-based data on density, mineralogy, size and shape and has developed measurement techniques to provide the elemental quantification required for the characterisation of these deposits. Nickel sulfide ores can be analysed to provide modal mineralogy, elemental deportment and liberation and locking data. The low-grade and variable nickel mineralogy of these deposits makes the use of quantitative mineralogy an essential component of maximising returns. Coarse particle measurements preserve the in situ textures of ores and support flotation and breakage test work for feasibility studies. The deportment of penalty and bonus elements can be quantified and the association and grain-size data can be used to identify potential separation issues.

Mineral exploration is the business of finding and defining ore deposits. Ore bodies are developed into mines and mines supply every mineral and metal upon which our society is built. Whether it be steel for our bridges, cement and aggregate for our concrete, coal for our power stations, copper for our wire, phosphate for our fertiliser or gold for our jewellery it first must he found, then mined and processed before we can use it. There is no other way.
