The Grootegeluk coal beneficiation plant is situated near Ellisras in the Waterberg coal= field in the Transvaal, RSA. At this plant 15 million tons of coal bearing material per annum are beneficiated by means of two-stage heavy medium bath and cyclone plants. Because of the very low yield of 12 % coking coal product, run= ping costs are of the - utmost importance. For this reason extensive tests were carried out to establish the most effective crushing and bene= ficiation methods and suitable aquipment. At the second heavy medium separation stage, the near-gravity material (+ 0,1. g/cc) amounts to 45 % and daily plant performance ana=lysis is required to ensure acceptable plant efficiency. Beneficiation processes for the -0,5 mm coal originally considered were froth flotation, shaking tables, heavy medium cyclones and water- only cyclones. When the froth flotation route was decided upon, further test work was done to enable selection of the equipment most suitable for the particular requirements.

Chlorination of organic matter by direct injection of chlorine gas or hypochlorite has been investigated metallurgically worldwide with little understanding of the basic chemistry of the passivation mechanisms in- volved. In this paper, chlorination of carbon is attributed to oxidation-reduc- tions, resulting in surface halogenation of graphitic or amorphous carbon. It is proposed that chlorine and carbon interact to form thin coatings of chioro-carbon complexes that block the adsorption of gold cyanide com- plexes, thus passivating the gold adsorption sites of carbonaceous matter. Analytical, spectrographic, microscopic and electron-optical methods have been applied to demonstrate the proposed mechanism of chlorine-carbon bonding, as well as to evaluate the advantages and limitations of chlorination in the pretreatment of refractory carbonaceous gold ores.

Most world-class high-grade (60 - 67 wt per cent Fe) hematite iron ore deposits are the product of enrichment of Precambrian iron-formations but processes responsible for enrichment are still unclear. Different models, ranging from syngenetic and diagenetic (King, 1989), deep-seated hydrothermal (Powell et al, 1999; Barley et al, 1999; Taylor et al, 2001; Gutzmer et al, 2002) and ancient supergene (Morris, 1980; 1985; Van Schalkwyk and Beukes, 1986) to modern supergene (MacLeod, 1966) have been suggested. The high-grade hematite deposits stand in contrast to martiteûgoethite ores which are generally accepted to be the result of supergene enrichment of iron-formation because they are found along Cretaceous to Tertiary lateritic weathering profiles (Morris, 1980; Harmsworth et al, 1990). Uncertainties about the origin of the high-grade hematite ores appear largely due to the monomineralic composition of the ores. They are almost exclusively composed of hematite (as microcrystalline hematite and martite), a mineral with wide stability field and very simple chemical composition that reveals little about its origin. Second, many of the deposits have been overprinted by later deformation and chemical weathering obscuring primary ore characteristics and zonation (Taylor et al, 2001). Third, surprisingly few detailed geological studies have been undertaken on the deposits with the aim of unraveling ore genesis. Most studies focus on the present-day structure of orebodies and their general physical-chemical composition for mining and beneficiation purposes. A more thorough understanding of the origin of high-grade hematite iron ore deposits may be gained by combining available mining-orientated data with systematic petrographic-geochemical analyses of different ore generations and hematite phases. This paper presents a first summary of results of an ongoing study, started some two years ago, of high-grade iron ore deposits in South Africa, India and Brazil, including a comparison with the rather well studied deposits of the Hamersley Province in Australia.

This paper was prepared and translated from the final report of the investigation into the Codelco Chile Salvador DivisionÆs air blast which occurred in the Inca-West area. In this section of the block cave mine, a stable arch formed covering an area of approximately 15 000 m2 . This zone subsequently collapsed producing a massive air blast. The collapse followed a series of planned extraction activities and occurred on 5 December 1999. This paper discusses the cave back arching event and the measures that were taken in order to induce the controlled collapse. This was to minimise risk to personnel, equipment and installations. The results obtained to date are presented.

Until very recently the application of solvent extraction to. the recovery of metals has been considered only for ithose operations where no other process was available. In general, .these operations, have involved metals such as 'f uranium or the rare earths, where the value of metal recovered has been very high. As a result, the tendency has been to consider solvent extraction as a very specialised, high cost technique with minimal application in the base metal industry. Since the mid-1960's this attitude has had to be changed drastically with the development of solvents specifically designed for the selective extraction of individual metals such.ascopper. The result is that solvent extraction must now be regarded as a proven hydrometallurgical technique for the recovery of base metals, and in particular copper. The first significant event in the application of solvent extraction to base metals was the production by General M. Inc. of a compound, designated LIX-63 (R)(1), which was a specific extractant for copper from ammoniacal sns. This did not find a wide application, however, because copper solutions with a pH in the applicable range we more readily treated by conventional techniques.

Production of hot metal from the Hlsmelt Research and Development Facility at Kwinana, Western Australia commenced in October 1993. The stand-alone facility is a unique, coal-based, integrated ironworks equipped to process iron ore fines to pig iron and simultaneously undertake a wide range of research tasks. The data generated will be used to verify the commercial potential of the technology and to set the design and operating parameters for a full-scale production plant. The design, construction, commissioning and initial operation of the HRDF has required many innovative and practical solutions to be developed and implemented by the international group of organisations contributing to the Hlsmelt Project. Initial operation has produced results which demonstrate the potential of the unique process technology associated with the core plant smelting unit. The recent achievement of post-combustion levels of 60 per cent with heat transfer efficiencies greater than 85 per cent demonstrates that the performance obtained with the Small Scale Pilot Plant in Maxhutte, Germany can be reproduced at a larger scale. The results presented in this paper support the thrust for further intensification and future commercialisation of the process.

The Hedong Gold Mine is located in the Yan(ai area, tihandong hroo%ill, e. China. It is an underground mine with an annual gold output of some 700 0(H) grams. The orebody is located on the edge of the Wanger Shan metamorphism zone, and the hangingwall of orebodies is thus defined by a prominent set of fractures. The proximity of the metamorphism zone and the inclusion of the fracture set ensure that both the orebody and the country rocks are unstable. The main orebodies dip at an angle of between 40 to 45¦, with a strike length of 160 metres and a horizontal width of 50 metres. Surface subsidence in the area is not permitted. Cut and fill mining is usually practiced. As the mining operation proceeds to greater depths, the ore grade is diminishing and it is necessary to find a more efficient stoping method. Sublevel open stoping with sequential extraction and filling of each sublevel has been designed and applied in situ. This new mining method is called 'sublevel open and fill stoping method' in the mine. Experience to-date is that new mining method is Satisfactory.

Determination of stress-strain behaviour of rocks plays a crucial role in understanding the response of rocks during loading. However, it is a tedious, expensive and a time-consuming process to obtain such characteristics both in the laboratory and in situ. On the other hand, non-destructive testing methods such as ultrasonic velocities can produce a reliable and fast solution to indentify state of strain and stress in rocks. The present paper aims to provide insight into the relations amongst ultrasonic wave velocities, amplitudes and deformability properties of porous siltstone under compressive loading. For this purpose, pulse (vP) and shear wave velocities (vS) along with amplitudes (AP - AS), and applied loads with resultant strain were measured simultaneously so that response of siltstone to compression can be evaluated. In addition, initial vP and vS were recorded at the beginning of each test to calculate dynamic elastic properties of the specimens. This provided a comparison between static and dynamic elasticity properties of siltstone. Crack damage associated with the onset of dilation was also investigated. The results showed that there is a non-linear logarithmic relation between velocities and stress-strain level for siltstones.

The distribution of mineral deposits within northwestern North America (Alaska, Yukon, and northern British Columbia) allows for an in-depth examination of the metallogenic patterns of a growing continental margin. A more complete understanding of the tectonic evolution of this part of the Pacific Rim, achieved over the last 15 to 20 years, now allows for the placement of ore systems into a well-defined plate tectonic framework. Ore deposits older than about 185 Ma represent hydrothermal systems that were active in the platform/shelf environment of ancestral North AmericaÆs miogeocline or hydrothermal systems developed in oceanic arcs and continental fragments more distal to the craton. These include important SEDEX, VMS, and pre-accretionary porphyry deposits. In contrast, most mineral deposits younger than about 185 Ma were formed within the growing Cordilleran orogen, as terranes were accreted to the continental margin during interactions between the North America and Pacific/Farallon/Kula plates. Such syn- to post-accretionary mineralised systems include many large lode gold and porphyry/skarn systems.

Between 1966 and 1976, Australia moved from being a non-producer to a position of meeting more than ten per cent of world nickel demand. New mine developments beginning the early-1990s have the promise of more than doubling the country's world market share - from around eight per cent to perhaps close to 20 per cent. This new surge in activity - the so-called `second nickel boom' - has led to several developments which seem likely to have similar economic impacts to those of the late- 1960s and early-1970s. There are, however, some notable differences this time around. The impact of long distance commuting over the past 30 years has changed the regional development scenario. The gold industry is much stronger in Australia than it was in the late-1960s and this helps to place the importance of new nickel discoveries in a more realistic perspective. As potential players have jockeyed to complete feasibility studies and move into construction and production phases of new long-life mines, established suppliers clearly seem to be taking actions to discourage the newcomers. In what appears to be a classic oligipolistic market situation, the heightening of perceived entry barriers to the industry appears to be a particularly visible strategy undertaken. In the current scenario as well, greater vertical integration among producers appears a significant influence on market power.

Methane in coal mines is an ever present hazard resulting in loss of lives and serious economic consequences. For effective control of methane, ventilation alone may not be totally adequate in some situations. In order to deal with such cases, new methods for the control of methane are being researched. One such method based on biotechnology has been investigated in Canada in the past several years. This method involves bringing methane oxidizing micro- organisms into contact with coal to oxidize the methane released to non-flammable products.

A brief history of the significant haulage truck feature changes and the factors that influenced those changes during the 60's and 70's provide a basis for forecasting the changes that can be expected in the 1980's. A review of the impact factors and changing requirements that currently exist that will create changes. A case study examining the procedures and financial benefits of introducing dump leaching to augment the Mt Gibson Gold Project CIP operations is discussed. Metallurgical testwork, followed by pilot dump leach operations, confirmed that gold recoveries of greater than 60 per cent could be achieved by dump leaching Mt Gibson laterite ore. Capital and operating costs were determined. Pit optimisation using the Whittle FOUR-D optimisation program calculated an optimum cutover grade between CIP and dump leaching for one orebody. The resultant recalculation of reserves based on CIP and dump leach operating costs showed that reserves for that orebody could be increased from 329 000 tonnes at 1.9 g/t An, to 1 488 000 tonnes at 1.2 gh An. NPV for the CIP only option of $1.4 m, was increased to $4.0 m for the combined CIP/dump leach option. This technique can be applied to existing gold projects and to new Developments.

The value of Australia's education services exports increased to over $15 billion dollars in 2009, placing education as the third overall export earner behind coal and iron ore; however there are concerns over the impact of emerging policies on the future of both the industry and the provision of mining education. Policies have impacts on the growing number of international rankings (or league tables) of mining jurisdictions and universities. A high position in such rankings might be used as a measure of perceived quality with benefit to those at the top and to the detriment to those lower down.    Top performing companies in the relatively new domain of sustainability have been shown to achieve better financial performance than their industry competitors, assisting them in attracting top quality committed staff, hence positioning themselves well for the future. The world's mining companies, jurisdictions and universities are now ranked with results in the public domain. It is argued as to the validity of the data or perceptions used in such rankings, but there is no doubt they are influential in determining the flow of dollars around the globe. By investing your pension fund assets in the shares of the top performing companies, by placing your exploration dollars in a country at the top of such a list of attractive jurisdictions, attending or recruiting from a University at the top of the rankings - risk must surely be reduced?   While savings and risk reduction can undoubtedly result from the introduction of new technologies developed through appropriate R&D (the other core activity of a university), the maintenance of a very high level of exploration and production performance through dedicated highly skilled staff every hour of every day quietly improves financial performance, while avoiding safety, environmental and/or community incidents (ie protects the 'triple bottom line'). As always risk reduction comes down to enabling quality people to do a quality job - through the actions of such people we can sustain the global mining industry and secure our social license to operate. However, there is global concern over where the numbers of such people, including those with the recently required skills in sustainability, are going to come from.   This presentation will discuss some of the complexity and interactions involved in the development of such rankings, the dangers inherent in their simple acceptance and use, plus indicate some of the directions mining educators might take to sustain and increase the supply of quality graduates to the global mining industry. Bacterial oxidation of sulfide minerals is a familiar and commercially available process to enhance gold recovery with problem ores. Pintail Systems, a Colorado, USA based company had developed bio-processes for gold recovery based on natural mineral formation and transformation in a global mineral cycle. The biological recovery of precious metals from ore involves a number of mechanisms that are dependent on the metal-mineralogical association. These processes include: partial bio-oxidation of sulfide ores; oxidation of gangue minerals exposing gold to leaching; surfactant properties of bacteria/nutrient solutions that improve wettability of ores and solution contact with leachable gold and silver; and microbial production and excretion of trace amounts of gold lixiviants, and bio-fracturing or biological alteration of ore minerals. Pintail has demonstrated enhanced recovery of precious metals during cyanide detoxification of spent heaps at the end of mine life. Biological recovery processes also have the potential to be applied to in situ mining technologies. The in situ process application could recover gold from subgrade deposits, small deposits or those ore bodies with uneconomic stripping ratios for conventional mining. In situ biomining can be accomplished at a fraction of the cost of conventional mining and leaching and does not have the environmental liabilities associated with many conventional gold lixiviants.

Over the last 100 years in the Polish mining industry considerable work has been done to assess optimum slurry, develop flexible delivery systems and adjust the fill technology to a wide variety of mining and geological conditions. Sand or industrial mineral waste materials for the backfilling of underground voids are used to control ground movement and surface deformation. This paper discusses various criteria to he considered in the preparation of a fill, including slurry properties, mine infrastructure, mining geometry, placement methods and the purpose of the backfill. This paper presents laboratory and in situ test data on the influence of materials parameters on the slurry flow in a pipeline system, stiffness, permeability, binding time and strength of a backfill, on the distribution of mixture in underground voids or the penetration between roof fall Materials.

Laboratory investigations were carried out to determine the resistance coefficient of the flow through beds irrigated with wetting and non-wetting liquids. A formula was obtained which may be used to evaluate the resistance of the irrigated packing. Quantitative investigations were also carried out on operating furnaces at Magnitogorsk. Continuous measurements of the lower pressure drops were made under different furnace conditions. Pressures were measured in the tuyere space and the bosh region. A significant transient behaviour of the pressure drop was observed in the irrigated zone as a function of the accumulation of the liquid phase in the bosh region as smelting progressed. Additionally, transient processes were also investigated in the upper furnace zones. The basic cause of the transient behaviour was shown to be the irregularity of burden descent caused by the casting cycle. It was shown that the rate of burden descent between consecutive casts reflects fairly accurately the accumulation and drainage of the liquid products as a result of which heat transfer, reduction and aerodynamic processes assume transient character. In practically all cases of casting a decrease in blast pressure and that over the furnace height of 0.2 kg/cm2 was observed. The analyses of radial gas composition at the stock line showed that compositional variations connected with the casting cycle are most pronounced in the central and peripheral regions, whilst in the intermediate regions the conditions are relatively stable. Calculations show that as casting progresses there is a decrease in the gas flow rate at the periphery and an increase in the centre of the furnace. The transient nature of the aerodynamic processes in packings revealed the existence of an appreciable reserve capacity. Elimination of transience was tested on the furnace at Magnitogorsk and improved operating and economical furnace parameters obtained.

The Newmont Waihi Operations are centred on the Martha mine at Waihi, New Zealand. The mine has produced over 6.6 million ounces of gold from both openpit and underground sources since operations began in 1878. The current open pit operations commenced in 1988 and in the year to 30 June 2002 produced 129,790 ounces of gold at a cash cost of USD122 per ounce. This paper provides an overview of current operations and future directions.

To extract uranium from low-grade, calcrete-hosted uranium (CHU) ore is challenging owing to the presence of carbonate and swelling clay gangue minerals that require an alkaline lixiviant to be used. Western Australia possesses ~75 000 U3O8 t in CHU resources. Improvements to alkaline leach extraction practices would improve the economic potential of these deposits.A column leach study of CHU ore was run for 105 days using an alkaline carbonate-bicarbonate lixiviant. The uranium content of the liquor plateaued after 75 days at ~275 mg U/L; the calculated maximum solution capacity was 800 mg U/L. Spiked peaks and troughs were seen in the data set beyond the 60th day, where concentrations ranged from 220 - 290 mg U/L, indicating possible cyclic uptake and loss of uranium from the solution.Pristine and leached ore samples were geochemically analysed and mineralogically characterised at high resolution using a field emission gun-electron probe micro-analyser (FEG-EPMA). Results showed that leached ore samples from the top of the column contained less carnotite than pristine ore. In contrast, leached ore samples from the column base contained regions with more carnotite than pristine ore, indicating precipitation. Three carnotite grain micro-structures were identified in the leached ore; fan-spherulite, granular and core-shell cubes, with evidence for multiple growth phases.Evidence of carnotite precipitation was seen at the edge of and in pore spaces within montmorillonite and dolomite grains. The point of zero charge of both minerals is lower than the pH of the lixiviant (pH 10.8), thus the mineral surfaces are negatively charged and would not attract UO2(CO3)34- ions out of solution. Similarly, the decrease in the uranium content of the lixiviant is not attributed to super-saturation, as this was unlikely to have been achieved.
