The present work proposes a distributed collaborative immersive virtual reality framework for prospective applications in the mining industry. A human-centered approach is described, with people being placed in the central position and surrounded by tasks that are to be carried out. Those tasks can be then achieved through synchronous or asynchronous communication, interactions using properly constructed user interfaces, virtual and/or augmented realities and computer vision. Several examples of such arrangements are presented. One of the applications facilitates an e-learning experience by providing a very familiar object – a book – as a target for users to interact with. Importantly, this system has the potential to provide an ‘enhanced’ teaching medium, as humans tend to remember events/situations better when they experience those events in person, when the immersive factor is involved. The immersive virtual reality environment enables a user to interact physically with various 3D objects and experience behaviours, which in turn reinforces the idea that doing leads to learning. This prototype system can be implemented as an efficient and cost effective e-learning and training platform for different engineering domains. At another level, the same technology can be used in the tele-operation of mining equipment for the future mine.

The Golden Cross project was a joint venture between Coeur NZ Ltd (80 per cent) and Viking Mining Company (20 per cent). The site is located in the Waitekauri Valley, 8 km north-west of Waihi, on the Coromandel Peninsula, in the North Island. The mine-site is situated close to the Coromandel Range Divide between the headwaters of the Waitekauri River and the Martoto Stream. The site has a history of Gold Mining dating back to 1892. The more recent mine comprised an open pit and underground gold and silver operation from December 1991 to April 1998, MacGillivray, Maton and Goldstone (2000).Doug Hood Ltd commenced the first of three contracts on site in September 1997 and was responsible for completing the final stages of open pit mining, landslide remedial works mine closure and rehabilitation works. The Mill Closure and Rehabilitation and Drainage Works contract, for which this submission relates, commenced in September 1999 and was officially completed by Doug Hood Ltd. on the 26 May 2001.This paper endeavours to highlight the project objectives and backgrounds them against the difficulties experienced with respect to the site-specific conditions, the design complexities and risks associated with the contract, from a contractorÆs perspective.

Bolivia, due to its turbulent past with a history of constant military coups, has given an image of complete instability to the foreign investor. The effects of this have been several fold, the major one resulting in a complete lack of exploration in modern terms since their revolution in 1952. What was overlooked by the foreign investor was the fact that revolution produced Agrarian Reform which is the foundation of the stability which Bolivia enjoys today. Another factor that is overlooked is the fact that its past history is one of vast mining fortunes having being made. Their political problems resulted in economic chaos in 1985 with an annual inflation rate of 26,000 percent. This resulted in the collapse of the government but the democratic process continued. Then came the so-called"South American Miracle" in 1986 when the government of Dr. Paz Estenssoro enacted an extremely harsh austerity program which consisted of the abolition of wage and price controls, the abolition of monopolies, the right to hire and fire, the weekly auctions of dollars and the free convertibility of currency which yielded a stable government with 8 percent inflation. This was followed by massive personnel reductions in the various mines and other industries.

In the heavy minerals industry wet high intensity magnetic separators (WHIMS) are widely applied for primary magnetic separation of magnetic minerals and non-magnetic minerals. This piece of equipment is well known for its robustness to handle a wide range of feed conditions and still produce stable product qualities and yields. A heavy mineral production plant aimed to increase production through their WHIMS plant containing 11 duties and 26 units. Instead of adding new units an alternative approach was followed to firstly maximise the efficiency of the current circuit and secondly to consider possible reconfiguration of the circuit to produce additional product tons for minimal capital investment. In order to characterise the current circuit’s efficiency, identify pockets of excellence and determine the areas for improvement the whole circuit was surveyed several times and mineral mass balances were drawn up.This paper aims to: discuss the modelling process of the WHIMS circuit,explain the calibration and validation process followed to ensure the accuracy, anddemonstrate the sensitivity analysis performed on the different options. From this analysis an efficiency criteria was developed to compare different circuit configurations that enabled the production plant personnel to make an informed decision on the way forward.

The Gold Ridge Mine is an open-cut gold mine in the Solomon Islands. The mine is owned and operated by Gold Ridge Mining Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ross Mining NL. At the invitation of the Solomon Island Government, project construction commenced in July 1997 and gold production commenced in August 1998. The mine is the countryÆs first, and represents a major milestone in the development of the Solomon Islands. At the time of project approval and construction, there was a growing awareness in the country of the potential impacts of mining in the tropics, partly due to unfavourable publicity surrounding a number of other mining operations in the Pacific region. The management of environmental impacts was therefore an important consideration in the approval of the project, and continues to receive a high level of attention from the Government and community. Ross Mining did not commit to the Gold Ridge Project until it had satisfied itself that all waste rock and tailings could be safely contained on-site, and that the standards normally expected of a mine in Australia could be met. Ross Mining approached the approval, construction, and operation of the Gold Ridge Mine with a set of operating principles that met Government and community concerns. These were:best practice environmental management; operation of the mine in accordance with standards expected of mining operations in Australia; independent peer review of key technical aspects; on-going consultation with Government and community; and equitable transfer of wealth to landowners and the local community. As a consequence, the Gold Ridge Mine has developed into a successful mining operation with a high level of support from local landowners, the general community and the Central and Provincial Governments of the Solomon Islands.

Northparkes Mines is a joint venture between Rio Tinto and the Sumitomo group and is operated by Rio Tinto to produce copper concentrate from ore sourced from open cut and underground. Underground ore is mined with an owner operator workforce using the block cave method from the E26 deposit, with the first lift of the cave now completed. Development of the Lift 2 block cave commenced in March 2001 using a contract workforce. The Lift 2 Project required the mining of 14 700 m of decline and lateral development to establish a new mining horizon at the 9450 level and to develop two new conveyor declines. Also included in the scope was the excavation of a Crusher chamber to house the jaw-gyratory crusher. This paper describes the excavation of the hydroset chamber and orepass that sit immediately underneath the Lift 2 Crusher chamber. It includes risk assessment, planning, development of method statements and standard operating procedures, through to the excavation of the orepass and the installation of ground support in seismically active ground. There was a major ground failure in the backs of the conveyor feeder chamber during its excavation, which affected the excavation of the orepass due to its proximity to the breakthrough site.

Gold-rich porphyry copper deposits areimportant sources of gold in the circum-Pacific region: 26 major deposits contain >7000 tonnes of gold. The deposits occur in a variety of subduction-related settings, and may be underlain by crust that is undergoing either extension or compression and that is either oceanic or cratonic in character. The deposits are associated intimately with composite porphyry stocks, which commonly were emplaced into coeval andesitic volcanic piles. The stocks range in composition from low-K calc-alkaline through high-K calc-alkaline to potassic alkaline. Much of the copper and gold were introduced as components of K-silicate alteration, which may undergo partial overprinting by intermediate argillic assemblages. Advanced argillic alteration is widespread in the shallow parts of the systems whereas sericitic alteration at deeper levels tends to be restricted. Gold distribution generally follows that of copper, which is present mainly as chalcopyrite with or without bornite. The gold is in the native state and occluded by cr in close proximity to the copper-iron and/or iron sulphides. The magmas and metals necessary for the generation of gold-rich porphyry deposits were derived mainly from subcrustal sources, with the subducted slab believed to play a pivotal role.

A bulk analyser based on the gamma-ray resonance scattering process can be used to give a rapid and accurate measure of the percentage by weight of copper or nickel averaged over a large mass of sample, typi- cally 20 kg. It is shown that for a bulk sample containing about 3 wt.% Cu, crushing to -25 mm is the only sample preparation requited for analysis to within an error of about 0.06 wt.% Cu (errors quoted are one standard deviation). A comparison of bulk analyser and con- ventional assays on the same bulk samples can be used to estimate the sample preparation errors in the conventional methods. The squared deviations between bulk analyser and conventional assays are approximated by the sum of variances in sample preparation, conventional analysis, and bulk sample analy- sis. The sample preparation error was esti- mated as 0.26 wt.% Cu for samples crushed to -2 mm before splitting, 0.08 wt.% Cu for samples crushed to -0.35 mm before splitting, and 0.04 wt.% Cu for the average of 15 grab samples from bulk samples which had been crushed to -2 mm. The average copper grade for each group of samples was about 1.7 wt.%. Results are presented which show that

The Acid Drainage Technology Initiative (ADTI) was initiated in 1995 by federal agencies, the National Mining Association (NMA) and the Interstate Mining Compact Commission (IMCC) to identify, evaluate and develop cost-effective and practical acid drainage technologies. In 1999, ADTI was expanded through the addition of the metal mining sector, which is focused on drainage quality issues related to metal mines. ADTI addresses drainage quality issues from abandoned, active, and future coal and metal mines. The guiding principle of ADTI is to build consensus among industry, federal and state regulatory agencies on acid drainage technology development and technology transfer issues. ADTI is focusing its efforts on mine drainage prediction, sampling/monitoring, modelling and avoidance/remediation. ADTI is not a regulatory or policy development program. ADTI includes the Coal Mining Sector (CMS) and the Metal Mining Sector (MMS) under the overall guidance of the ADTI Operations Committee. The Operations Committee consists of representatives from industry, state and federal government and academia. The Coal Mining Sector includes two committees; a prediction committee and an avoidance and remediation committee. The Metal Mining Sector includes steering committee and work groups on prediction, sampling and monitoring, modelling, mitigation, and pit lakes. The Coal Mining Sector has produced two publications on the prediction and prevention of acid drainage. The Metal Mining Sector has workbooks under preparation covering the work group topics. This past winter, the Metal Mining Sector, working with the US Bureau of Land Management, presented a satellite training session on acid drainage. ADTI has evolved in response to changing needs and technologies as evidenced by the addition of the Metal Mining Sector in 1999. The Operations Committee and the members of the Coal and Metal Mining Sectors will guide future direction in response to identified issues.

A sample of pyrrhotite flotation concentrate pulp assaying 15.3 g/t An, which had been prepared from an old tailing dump, was treated to extract the gold. Examination of the concentrate with an SEM showed that exposed or free native gold, 5-40 ¦m in diameter, was present but no locked gold was observed. Direct cyanidation of the concentrate to extract the gold showed that the flotation reagents present inhibited gold extraction. A range of pre-treatments was used to overcome these effects.Direct cyanidation for 48 h extracted only 26% of the gold, indicating possible contamination of the gold in the concentrate with flotation reagents. Pre-treatment of the concentrate pulp by aeration for 24 h, or by 72 h aeration with an addition of 3.65 kg/t of sodium sulphite, gave little improvement in gold extraction by subsequent cyanidation. Pre-treatment by filtration, or by aeration with 12.5 L/t 100 volume hydrogen peroxide, followed by cyanidation for 48 h gave gold extractions in the range 67-77%. Combining filtration and an aeration period with hydrogen peroxide addition raised the subsequent cyanidation extraction of gold to 88%, giving a tailing assaying 1.5 g/t Au.

The development and application of paste fill, cement slurry aggregate fill and shotcrete bulkheads at Mount Isa Mines is described. The progressive changes in filling style in the Mount Isa copper mines from a dry fill based cemented rock fill to tailings based paste fill and slurry fills is explained. The development of shotcrete arched bulkheads and engineered drainage system is described. Details on how Mount Isa Mines has achieved approximately 30 per cent cost reduction in backfill operations through innovations are given. The development of a rocky paste fill is explained.

In the early-1990s, Tad Golosinski, the former the head of mining department at WASM participated in a review mining engineering courses in Australia. The review team asked various industry executives what subjects they thought graduates needed to be taught. Tad made the comment to me that the more senior executives thought that history and ethics were very important. The outcome was that the mining engineering courses were required to contain at least five per cent content dealing in ethics. The course was to be modified to reflect this. Tad thought at the time the students would think that subjects dealing in history and ethics came from retirees and professionals that were over the hill. So let me talk to you today about ethics.

The Singapore Land Transport Authority Contract C917A is for the design, construction and completion of all outstanding works under the original Contract 917, including taking over the design and construction responsibility for the works carried out by previous contractor. Construction works connect the bored tunnels between the stations at King Albert Park and Sixth Avenue on the Downtown Line two in Singapore.The original contractor became insolvent leaving the works incomplete. On 29 August 2013 McConnell Dowell were awarded the completion contract following a fast-tracked tender process. The completion contract required a quick start and therefore the recruitment of some of the original workforce. A large majority of the original workforce was from Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Philippines, Bangladesh, India and Thailand. In order to ensure that the safety standards were upheld, and that the new workforce embraced a safety culture, a behaviour based safety (BBS) approach was implemented.The BBS approach was implemented to overcome the existing poor cultural safety behaviours, and to ensure that high standards and expectations for safety were implemented. This ensured that the workforce were comfortable in identifying hazards, avoiding shortcuts, and changing poor safety behaviours.This article outlines how a BBS program was delivered on the C917A project, containing defined goals, communication tools, and assessment and feedback models.CITATION:Brown, R, 2014. "Automation offers the mining industry great potential for improvements in productivity and safety. However, the experience of introducing automation in other industries has been that the full potential of new technology is not always realised. Designers are surprised, for example, to find that automation does not eliminate human errors. Unwanted and unexpected consequences also arise if the introduction of automation fails to consider how people will adapt to the new technology. A focus on the technical aspects of automation is necessary but not sufficient for success. The potential for improvements in productivity and safety promised by automation will only be achieved if the joint cognitive system that emerges from the combination of humans and automation is designed to perform the functions required for system success. The sequences in alteration and mineralisation from five copper-gold porphyry systems (Taysan and Didipio, Philippines; Horse-Ivaal and Wafi River, PNG; and Goonumbla, Australia) and one gold-copper skarn system (Browns Creek, Australia) are documented in this paper. Alteration and mineralisation in all these systems reflect a common evolution from crystallisation of melts emplaced at shallow crustal levels (zoned potassic -> propylitic alteration), followed by exsolution of volatile-rich fluids from these melts (porphyry quartz ¦K-feldspar/biotite veins and local high temperature advanced argillic alteration), to a progressive cooling of the intrusion which results in associated retrograde alteration. Copper-gold mineralisation in all cases is almost exclusively restricted to the cooler retrograde events. The recognition of the temporal and spatial zonations in alteration and mineralisation in gold-copper porphyry systems has significant relevance in the interpretation of geophysical signatures, overprinting alteration, vein sequences and structural controls, and can lead to more focused and potentially more cost-effective exploration.

In the mining business the cost of grinding media represents up to 40 per cent of the total milling cost and therefore grinding media optimisation has a direct impact on the concentratorsÆ bottom line. In the process of optimising grinding media alloys, Magotteaux developed its own methodology which consists of a series of analyses, tests, calculations and evaluations and assist the concentrator in optimising their processes.This paper presents the Prominent Hill case study where this methodology has been applied on both the secondary ball mill and regrind IsaMill«.The analysis of the wear conditions in the secondary ball mill allows Magotteaux to select a series of grinding media alloys to be tested to reduce grinding media consumption. By marking these different grinding media types with a unique drilling pattern, one can quantify the relative wear performance and cost effectiveness of each grinding media type within the same milling environment. After selecting the most economical grinding media composition a full scale industrial trial, involving topping up the selected grinding media is carried out and the media wear performance closely monitored and analysed.For stirred grinding mills, suppliers propose different grinding media, mainly ceramic beads, with specific properties and cost. Therefore the concentratorsÆ choice is a compromise between grinding efficiency, wear resistance and cost. The selection of the correct grinding media for stirred milling and the assessment procedure will be presented in this paper. A production information management system (PIMS) was recently implemented at Queensland NickelÆs Yabulu Refinery. Although a strong business case was developed to justify the significant investment in PIMS some potential beneficiaries remained sceptical of the anticipated benefits. The decision to install PIMS was justified as the on-line availability of continuous production data enabled the optimisation of some crucial operations resulting in significant cost savings, improved throughput and final product quality. Furthermore the rapid access to extended historical data has allowed the cause of repeated failure of equipment to be determined. The investment is expected to pay for itself within two years and has already contributed towards significant savings. This paper focuses on some of the diverse production improvements gained and compares the anticipated benefits in the business case to those achieved. A brief outline of the phased implementation of the OSIsoft PI data historian and complementary client software at Yabulu is included, along with details of the lessons learned.

"Fluidised-bed flotation has been demonstrated over the last 16 years as an effective method for improving the flotation recovery of coarse particles. This technology has been successfully deployed into the industrial mineral sector with multiple installations within phosphate beneficiation plants and potash mills. Due to the minimal mineral surface expression required when utilising this technology, more recent studies have centred on the applicability of using this HydroFloat™ technology for the recovery of coarse sulfides and base metals. Multiple approaches have been investigated to determine the best means for implementing this novel coarse particle flotation system into both existing and new plant circuitry. These include the treatment of tailings to recover values that have been lost using conventional technologies and also the direct treatment of a coarse feed, either within the grinding circuit or by use of a separate split-feed flotation approach. Recent applications of the technology will be presented along with data generated from several test campaigns and ongoing research investigations. This abstract discusses a heap leach copper mine that was failing to perform and as a result was not meeting targeted production. The mine had numerous technical challenges including: high water inflows, low levels of geotechnical monitoring, performance issues with mining, resource model and grade control reconciliation issues, and unexplained low levels of performance from the heap leaching operations. A team from various organisations with specialist skill sets including: a forensic accountant, the owner’s representative and a mining engineer, was arranged to visit the site. The task was to investigate the situation and determine what could be done to turn the performance of the mine around. After an initial assessment in late 2018, efforts were directed to better understanding the operations and improving the performance of the site through preventative management. A key part included the creation of production forecasts that could be achieved that would help restore confidence in the operations. Uncertainty in the mine achieving production forecasts and the performance of the heap leaching operations were contributing to the decline of the operations. Investigations uncovered the fact that while the resource model could reliably predict total copper, a lack of sequential leach data meant the accurate prediction of soluble and insoluble copper species, both important for heap leaching, was difficult to do with any degree of certainty. The crushing and mining contractors also appeared to have suffered somewhat from a lack of management by the owner’s team and performance had affected the production of copper. Collaboration and management were used by the team to understand and stabilise the operations. Ongoing collaborative efforts by the management team, site personnel and contractors resulted in a positive outcome for the owners and their mine – and could at yours.

Almost a quarter of a century since Bridges (1993) documented techniques for the assessment of ground conditions in a seminal paper in the Proceedings Second International Mining Geology Conference, the necessary role of the geologist in recording geotechnical data on exploration properties and in mines remains. Typically, the geologist is the first professional on the exploration property. Of course, most exploration properties don’t become mines. However, when a property does start to come together and form a coherent mineral deposit and professionals from across the minerals industry spectrum, including specialist geotechnical engineers, become increasingly involved, it remains the geologist who has the most intimate knowledge of the deposit. By association, that knowledge extends to the character of the rock mass.Throughout the various phases of prefeasibility, feasibility, construction and production, culminating in the mature mine, the knowledge of the rock mass held by the geologists continues to grow. In the current era of minimising cost and optimising profit, meeting the requirements and expectations of stakeholders ranging from fellow employees to investors, industry and financial regulators and the broader public, in a social environment where occupational health and safety concerns are of uppermost concern in every endeavour, the value of the geologists’ observations cannot be understated. Mines nowadays employ more geotechnical engineers than they did in the early 1990s when Bridges (1993) wrote his paper. More funds are available for specific geotechnical investigations of exploration properties and mines; none-the-less, those programs remain limited in their extent and there is a wealth of additional data available for collection with the appropriate training, at little additional effort. Fundamentally it is all about the numbers. Any hole not geotechnically logged is a hole that will need to be drilled again if the data is required. Any face, surface or underground, not geotechnically mapped is one that may need to be mapped a second time. That doesn’t mean every hole or every face. However, it is the proposition of this paper that the opportunity for additional geotechnical data to be gathered during traditional geological investigations is an opportunity that cannot be ignored. Occupational health and safety requirements demand that the geotechnical risks associated with mining are appropriately managed. Mining regulations in most Australian and overseas jurisdictions requires the consideration of geotechnical risk through formalised management plans. The Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) Code requires the consideration of modifying factors more than ever before. The benefit to be realised through improved geotechnical understanding by geologists on the ground leads to improved occupational health and safety, optimised reporting compliance, and improved financial and social outcomes for the exploration property and ultimately for the mine that follows.CITATION:Hills, P B, 2017.
