Recent investigations of the molybdenum-carbon alloys have been reported by Becker and Ebertl,‡ Westgren and Phragmén2, T. Takei3, and H. Tutiya4. Takei3 studied the Mo-C system by employing metal-lographic and X-ray methods, and the other publications described the determination of the crystal structure of the molybdenum carbides. In exploring this system by a technique previously applied to the tungsten-carbon series5, the results of Takei were confirmed with two definite exceptions; i.e., first the composition of the eutectic, and second the nature of the carbon-rich intermediate phase. Consequently, a more thorough examination of the molybdenum-carbon constitution was initiated in an effort to correlate the data supplied by the microstructures, diffraction patterns and chemical analyses. Metallographic Investigation A briquette of molybdenum powder when heated in a carburizing atmosphere at 1500" to 1600" C. for several hours develops the carbon-rich layer shown in Fig. 1. The carburization was accomplished by placing the briquette in a carbon tube, which was heated in the hydrogen atmosphere of an alundum muffle wound with tungsten resistor. While the macrostructure indicates two distinct shells, and suggests the possibility of two carbon-rich phases, no evidence of this condition could be detected by the microscope, which revealed but one high-carbon constituent. This carbide forms next to the molybdenum as a relatively dense, light-colored zone (Fig. 2) which passes abruptly into an outer layer of spongy texture. As will be noted later, only one intermediate phase was observed in the X-ray photograms prepared of different locations in the carburized zone. The dendritic pattern of steels shown by deep etching is used extensively as a guide in the inspection and control of the great majority of steels used in ordnance construction and for many applications in industry. The value of macroexamination lies in the fact that it enables a qualified observer to make deductions concerning the general quality of relatively large pieces of metal. Not the least of these general characteristics is the nature and extent of the dendritic segregation in the steel, either in the cast condition or after mechanical or thermal treatments. Previous Work Detailed methods for macroetching were outlined by Yatsevitchl and have been standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials. A comprehensive study of the occurrence, origin, and the chemical and crystalline nature of the dendritic structure was given by Keshiam2 The marked persistence of dendritic segregation in nickel steels is fully recognized and has been discussed by Sauveur and Reed3 and by others. Very little, however, has been written on the effect of the various elements on the macrostructure of steels, and the purpose of this report is to submit evidence concerning the influence of chromium, nickel and molybdenum on the macrostructure of some 4 by 4-in. ingots cast and treated under closely controlled conditions. Methods and Results The ingots to be described were made in a 60-lb. high-frequency induction furnace at the Watertown Arsenal. Heats were made from a single lot of materials; were molten for the same length of time; tapped at approximately the same temperature into a standard mold preheated in each case to 150º ± 10º C.; and stripped and buried in ashes after 10 min. in the mold. If interfacial equilibrium is maintained at the interface between a growing precipitate and the supersaturated matrix, so that solute diffusion alone determines the growth rate, the precipitate shape should evolve toward that characteristic of the dendrites found in solidification. However, this shape is rarely observed in precipitation reactions proceeding at high temperatures where interfacial equilibrium is usually felt to prevail. Thus some other stabilizing factor must enter, to keep the interface smooth. It is shown that a slow interfacial reaction (low interfacial mobility) will stabilize the interface, while transformation stresses have a IN studying the kinetics of phase transformations such as solidification or proeutectoid precipitation at high temperatures, it is customary to assume that equilibrium exists across the interface and that the rate of the reaction is determined by the rate at which heat and solute diffuse to and from the interface. In the case of precipitation, such an assumption predicts an almost infinite rate of initial growth. It is generally stated that the rate cannot be infinite and that during some initial period the rate must be determined not by solute diffusion but by an interfacial reaction, i.e., transferring atoms across the interface. The duration of this much weaker stabilizing eFfect and impurities tend to enhance instability. It is also concluded that a sets an upper limit on the wavelength of the perturbation that can give instability. Thus initially all flat or smoothly curved particle interfaces will be stable even if their growth is diffusion-controlled. Proeutectoid precipitation in the Fe-C system is considered in some detail and it is shown that the experimental results can only be rationalized if the growth rate of ferrite in steel transformations is determined by a slow interfacial reaction for all hut a few orientations between the two phases. initial period has never been clearly established, but it is generally assumed to be too short to affect any measurable results.' Several authors have pointed out that in the case of interfacial equilibrium any bump in the surface will grow out ahead of the planar interface due to the higher gradient in front of it.2j3 Thus the interface will be unstable with respect to an irregular interface with points (plates) propagating rapidly out ahead of the interface into the supersaturated phase. Recently, Mullins and Sekerka have given equations for the stabilizing effect of surface tenion.~ They found that for particles with a radius of curvature of 1 p or greater the stabilizing effect of surface tension will be completely overcome by a supercooling, or supersaturation, of as little as

An experimental study of the flow of line-textured. aqueous foams through Pyrex tubes is described. The foams range in quality F (ratio of gas volume to total volume) from 0.70 to 0.96 and behave like pseudoplastic fluids. At lower flow rates they exhibit laminar flow ad have apparent viscosities which increase with quality, and which cover a range of 15 cp to 255 poise for tubes of 0.25- to 1.50-mm radius rj. At higher flow rates a plug-like type of flow is developed, the extent of which increases with both T and ri. When the same foams flow through either open or packed Pyrex tubes, remarkably high streaming potentials ?E are often generated. These can easily reach 50v if nonionic foaming agents are used, but are at least an order of magnitude less for ionic foaming agents. A linear relationship between ?E and the pressure differential ?p is observed; this usually extrapolates to positive values of ?p at ?E of zero. The slope of the line increases with both F and ri. An equation was derived to describe the streaming potential of non- Newtonian fluids in circular tubes and was used to correlate experimental results. The calculated < potentials are of the right order of magnitude. INTRODUCTION Foams are both unusual and inniguing in their physical properties, and have been the subject of many scientific studies. However, present knowledge of foams is still fragmentary, specific and often contradictory. Apparent viscosity of foam is the physical property of greatest interest to both rheo1ogists and engineers. sibreel reported that the apparent viscosity decreased with increasing shear rate in a manner similar to some non-Newtonian fluids. Penny and Blackman2 reported that fire-fighting foams had both a limiting shear stress and a tensile yield stress. There is little doubt that some foams at least behave like non-Newtonian fluids, and have apparent viscosities considerably higher than those of either constituent phase. The high apparent viscosity of foam with its concomittant effect on mobility ratio and sweep efficiency no doubt prompted several attempts by research groups to use foam as a displacing agent in porous media. Based on recent experience, most of these groups probably succeeded in completely blocking fluid flow in the porous media and then abandoned their efforts. Two groups apparently found the successful combination of experimental parameters at about the same time.3,7 Others have recently added to our knowledge of foam flow in porous media and its use as a displacing agent.8-13 An experimental problem encountered by Fried3 was a transient blockage of foam flow in porous media when distilled water was used to prepare the foam-producing solution. Fried surmised that this was due to an electrokinetic effect and he eliminated it by using electrolytes in preparing foaming solutions. He also measured the streaming potential of a number of foams in capillary tubes which he found to be appreciably higher than those obtained when the constituent liquid flowed under comparable conditions. This paper presents results of a more comprehensive study of the streaming potential generated by aqueous foam flowing in both open and packed Pyrex tubes. It also adds to knowledge of the rheology of these foams as deduced from their flow behavior in open tubes. APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE A diagram of the apparatus used is shown in Fig. 1. Details of its construction, testing and use are described elsewhere.14 Careful selection of materials, extreme cleanliness and rather elaborate electrical insulation and shielding were necessary to obtain reproducible results (±5 percent). Both streaming potential and streaming current were measured with an electrometer. The design of the foam generator developed for this work is novel (Fig. 2). This paper is concerned with: (1) an analysis and interpretation of the filtration characteristics of drilling muds on filter paper, and (2) an interpretation of early stage "filtration" on consolidated synthetic porous media, herein referred to as the "surge loss" period. It is shown that water-loss data can be plotted so as to disclose the existence of a surge period, a non-uni-form cake thickness period, and a constant pressure filtration period. The same periods occur during exposure of consolidated porous media to muds. The data on consolidated porous media indicate that: (1) mud particles bridge pores inside porous media during the surge period, and (2) "filter cake" build-up inside porous media occurs during subsequent filtration. The data also show that the surge loss increases with sample permeability and with pressure differential. INTRODUCTION The phenomenon of mud filtrate invasion into porous sands of a drilling well has been recognized for many years.1,2,3,4 Part of API Code 29 is concerned with the filtration testing of a drilling mud to yield data on this subject. In a number of investigations "plastering properties" of muds were studied,5,6,7,8 "plastering" apparently meaning cake forming properties. In such studies the characteristics (thickness, permeability, and toughness) of the cake and the rate at which the liquid phase of the mud was separated from the solids (filtration rate through the cake, commonly referred to as water loss) were measured or at least considered. From the standpoint of its effect on well productivity, filtrate invasion into "clean" water-wet pay sands (i.e., those containing no clay minerals) may not necessarily be a serious problem. An increase in water saturation in the zone immediately around the wellbore would cause loss of oil permeability. However, in such a system, much of this water may be removed by oil production. If filtration occurs into "dirty" sands (i.e., those containing appreciable clay minerals), clay swelling or other mechanisms may cause losses in oil permeability which cannot be overcome by oil production.&apos;.&apos; The phenomenon of mud particle invasion into the pay sand of a drilling well was considered to be a possible serious factor in the early days of rotary drilling. Opinions varied as to whether drilling fluids "mudded up" and "sealed" oil sands. In 1932 Rubel,9 Gill,10 and Parsons," in separate papers, presented differences of opinion together with some laboratory and field data concerning loss of oil production caused by drilling fluid invasion into pay zones. These papers, and the discussions, furnish a large background on this subject and indicate the very clear thinking of many men at a time when petroleum production technology was in its infancy. Jones and Babson,6 and Silent,&apos; experimentally found that the depth to which mud particles invaded water-saturated sand packs was small (no greater than 1/16 in). Arn-quist12 in 1937 observed loss of water permeability due to invasion of mud particles into water-saturated, consolidated, sandstone samples. Williams and Cannon5 studied the filtra-tion properties of drilling muds and mentioned "sludge" which penetrated a short distance into the water-saturated filtering medium (sand pack). IN recent years, the problem of damage to coke-oven walls by expanding coal charges undergoing carbonization has engaged great attention on the part of research workers in this field, and has led to the development of many devices for estimating these pressures.1-14 Only in Russell&apos;s method11 and in the Koppers ovens7 are conditions quite similar to those in commercial ovens. Tests even in these ovens are empirical because no information has been published to permit an evaluation of "scale effects." Owing to the relatively large wall area in these test ovens, the average wall pressure determined may be lower than that existing in localized areas. This factor may be compensated for in part by the testing of coal charged into the test oven at a bulk density that is as high as the highest that is believed to exist in commercial ovens. Both of these lacks might be filled by the development of an adequate gauge for the direct measurement of wall pressure exerted by the charge in commercial coke ovens in normal operation. Previous attempts to elaborate such instruments7,15 have resulted in units which, because they had to be water-cooled, probably produced changes in the conditions of carbonization, and which had to be removed from the oven before carbonization was complete, to avoid their destruction. Late in 1941 the Coal Research Laboratory undertook to develop such a gauge, in which gas pressure was balanced against the charge pressure and which thus would not require water cooling, on a suggestion made in 1937 by one of the present authors and William B. Warren, a former member of the Laboratory staff. The gauge heads themselves were to be simple and cheap enough so that they might be discarded after each run if seriously damaged. This would permit them to be left in place throughout the carbonizing period, when they could be pushed out with the coke. The basis of the design, of which the latest exemplification is shown in Fig. I, was that as the internal gas pressure within a flexible metal envelope was increased, the flexible wall would move away from a stop when the gas pressure just overbalanced the charge pressure. If the stop were an insulated electrical contact, the point of balance could be indicated by the breaking of an electric circuit. It was anticipated that, while the instrument must operate at high temperature, the presence of a strongly reducing atmosphere throughout the carbonizing period would so reduce-the danger of scaling that mild steel could be used for the gauge. This expectation has been justified. Danger of attack on silica oven walls by the steel gauge body can be eliminated by cementing asbestos paper or an alundum or silica plate to the back of the gauge body. The gauge head itself has a relatively heavy mild-steel body, A, into which standard ¼ in. pipe B is screwed to conduct gas and electrical leads. FOR many years gravitational classification has been employed as a basic tool in beneficiation of minerals and coal. While improvements have been made to increase efficiency and fields of application, the basic flow pattern has remained relatively unchanged in most gravitational classifiers. Feed slurry is introduced into a settling pool wherein the coarser solids settle against either an upward or horizontal fluid current, or a combination of both, and are withdrawn in a concentrated underflow stream. The finer solids below the classification point possess too low a settling velocity and thus are primarily swept out through a weir overflow by the bulk of the fluid. Because of its simplicity, efficiency, and low power and maintenance costs, gravitational classification finds a wide acceptance for separations in the range of 20 to 325 mesh. Two factors resulting from the basic flow pattern employed in gravitational classification present difficult problems for certain installations. If classification at 60 to 200 mesh of separation is desired, capacity in terms of gallons of overflow per minute per square foot of settling pool area must be low to allow required solids to settle to the underflow. If a thousand or more gal per min of feed slurry must be handled, either a very large classifier or a number of smaller units must be employed, taking up floor space and head room. Examples of this are the large classifiers, wetting tanks, or settling tanks used in the coal industry for recovery of process water from fine solids. Units as large as 50 or 60 ft in diam and 60 ft high, requiring substantial amounts of steel, are not uncommon. A second factor is the lack of self-regulation in gravitational classification. As overflow rate increases, mesh of separation increases correspond-ingly. This normally heightens difficulties of bene-ficiation. If a fine mesh of separation is required at varying feed rates, the problem is more than doubled in complexity. One of the primary advantages of gravitational classification is low power requirement. Gravity feeds or very low pressure heads are employed. However, fluid energy is still present in the inlet stream and provision must be made to dissipate it properly to obtain uniform upward or horizontal currents. Rather than waste this energy, it would be desirable to utilize it to secure a greater degree of self-regulation and simultaneously increase classification capacity per square foot of area. A free vortex could be realized by a tangential entry of feed, resulting in generation of centrifugal force to complement force of gravity in its action. With greater force it should be possible to gain finer separation at any overflow rate per square foot of settling pool area as compared with conventional gravitational classification. Furthermore, as feed rate increases, centrifugal force will also increase and at least partially offset faster currents sweeping solid particles to the overflow. A more stable classification point should result. The liquid-solid cyclone is the most common application of a free vortex in the beneficiation field.&apos; Many previous papers have emphasized uniformity of flow pattern within the cyclone which is largely responsible for the sharp classification that can be obtained.&apos;-4 If a free vortex can be maintained in a non-pressurized vessel with a free surface it may be possible to realize a third advantage of sharper classification. This open-top cyclone would then achieve a minimum energy loss comparable to that with conventional classifiers, and a mesh of separation coarser than 150 mesh, extending the range of application of the free vortex. This is not presently possible with ordinary cyclones. To test the applicability of the free vortex to gravitational classification, a 30-in. diameter open-top cyclone was constructed at Northwestern University. The cylindrical section was 30 in. high and the conical section included an angle of 60". At first blush one is tempted to say that iron-mines are like any other mines, and that principles governing miniug-property in general will apply to them. But there are certain considerations which seem to repay reflection. Gold and copper are more or less independent of transportation. The proof of this is that those metals are profitably mined and shipped from the remotest corners of the earth. Their value is determined by the cost of production on the ground. This is quite true of gold, not quite so true of copper, not at all true of iron. If New York were a. fishing-village and Chicago a swamp, Calumet & Hecla might still be a bonanza. The main element of its value is the 60 lb. of fine copper per ton which it produced for years. But the Mesabi Range is absolutely dependent upon the industrial activity in the United States. Iron-manu-facture in Europe would give it no value whatever. If Chicago and New York had a population of Peruvians or Hindus, the Hull-Rust mine would be as worthless a bit of landscape as any tundra in Alaska. I have discussed these facts more or less casually and dimly in my book on the cost of mining and in my report to the Tax Commissioners of Michigan.1 I shall try here to bring them out in more detail. I have already referred to some differences in the problem of mining as between the more precious metals, e.g., gold, and the less precious and more abundant minerals, like iron and coal; but it is interesting to note that the literature of the eco-

Soaps have hem used as collectors for many years, but only in the last eight years have other long-chain paraffin salts been used. It may be anticipated that these newer collectors will be used mainly with nonsulphide minerals, for which the xan-thates and similar compounds are of little value. On the other hand, the xanthates are both cheap and effective for sulphide ores and seem likely to retain their present cminence in this field. During 1938 and 1939 two of us (E. E. W. and I. W. W.) commenced a comprehensive investigation of the principles underlying the use of paraffin chain salts as flotation reagents. This research was sponsored jointly by the University of Melbourne and a group of Australian mining companies. † A broad, semiquantitative survey was then made of the field covered in the present paper. This was followed in 1940 by further work by one of us (K. L. S.). In 1941 the investigation was taken over by the Division of Industrial Chemistry of the Commonwealth Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Australia. Discovery of some principles upon which are based the flotation of minerals by paraffin chain salts was followed by their application in the development of processes for the recovery of certain strategic minerals from their ores. Promising results in the flotation of cassiterite from various ores will be described in a subsequent paper. The Paraffin Chain Salts &apos;he basic requirements for a "collector " in flotation are that it should form a film over the surface of the mineral to be floated, and that this film should be orientated so that hydrocarbon (nonpolar) groups form the effective surface. When modified in this way, the mineral surface possesses some degree of air avidity. All investigators would agree with Taggart, Taylor and Ince23 that such a film can be produced only if the collector compound contains an active (polar) group to attract it to the mineral surface as well as the nonpolar group. One section of this large class of polar-nonpolar compounds is the paraffin chain salts: CH3(CH2)nX where .X signifies a polar group that ionizes in aqueous solution. Though the compound can ionize, it may be a weak or a strong electrolyte, and the hydrocarbon chain may be in the cation or the anion (Table I). Many compounds of similar constitution are available, but the usual polar groups are: -Co2Na, -So3Na, -So4Na, — PO4Na2, or an aminonitrogen group, the

New Jersey, Florida, and Canadian ilmenites were reduced with hydrogen or coke under various experimental conditions and the phase changes occurring in the ilmenite upon reduction have been studied by microscopic examination of polished sections and by X-ray diffraction. The products formed were dependent upon the type of ilmenite, temperature, time and reducing agent. Of the reducing agents, hydrogen was the more effective at lower temperatures. 1 HE possible utilization of ilmenite as a source of both iron and titanium has resulted in the development of a number of methods for the separation of the iron and titanium content. Slagging processes as currently used in Canada are typical of such methods. Somewhat less attention has been given industrially to the reduction of the iron content at less than the slagging temperature. Although references maybe found to such work, in general only one type of ilmenite, either natural or synthetic, has been studied by each author. We have attempted to draw some relationship between the results of experimental reduction and the type of deposit from which the ilmenite was derived, as evidenced by phases occurring in the ores and in the reduction products. Ilmenite ores having from 27 to 61 pct titanium dioxide were included in this study and in each case reduction was carried out at such temperatures that only limited coalescence of the particulate iron product occurred within the ilmenite grains. The history of the individual ilmenite samples and the temperature of reduction were found to determine the occurrence of various phases and the mode of distribution of the iron. REVIEW OF EARLIER WORK ON REDUCTION One of the earliest references to the reduction of ilmenite at less than the slagging temperature was made in 1917.&apos; The metallic iron produced was_____ leached out by the action of dilute sulfuric or hydrochloric acid, to leave a product high in titanium dioxide. Subsequent to this, numerous patents2-&apos;? and other references13"21 have appeared concerning reduction of ilmenite by carbon, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane, coal gas, water gas, or the like in the absence of fluxing agents. Mineragraphic examinations were not reported, and in the main, the only examinations made were chemical analyses. However, in two cases3,13, titanium suboxides were reported in the products and in one case2&apos; rutile was reported, in addition to metallic iron. Both were identified by X-ray diffraction. While reductions in the absence of fluxing agents were generally followed by either a wet or dry chemical process for removal of the metallic iron, a Canadian source17 reported removal of the metallic iron by magnetic separation. By the addition of fluxing agents during reduction, the metallic iron has been coalesced into "pearls." Each reference to such a process23-28 has shown that the coalesced iron could be removed by magnetic or gravity means after the product was crushed. In the absence of fluxes, the coalescence did not generally occur. The major part of the present study has been limited to reductions without fluxing agents in order to determine the primary reactions of naturally occurring ilmenites. Titaniferous iron ores have also been studied,29-33 17, l9 their reduction having been used as the basis of a commercial process for beneficiation of such ores in Norway29 and more recently considered in the United States34,35. IN 1930 the late Dr. Reinhardt Thiessen set up a method of microscopic analysis and type classification of coal that has since been followed as standard practice in the coal-petrography laboratory of the Bureau of Mines. Thiessen&apos;s terminology which designated the constituent parts of coal in terms of botanical origin was introduced in 1920.l The technique, however, of preparing a completely representative series of thin sections from a column sample of coal for use in making quantitative determinations of coal components with a microscope was developed about 10 years later by Thiessen and coworkers G. C. Sprunk and H. J. O&apos;Donnell.2 Complete thin-section analyses subsequently have been made of 126 column samples of various ranks and types of American coals. The data and information were assembled from these thin-section studies and published in a large number of reports dealing chiefly with investigations of the coking and hydrogenation properties of certain American coals. In the years following adoption of Thiessen&apos;s method, a considerable amount of work was done in collecting column samples of many coals, making routine thin-section analyses of these, interpreting the results, and finding practical application for the information in other fields of coal research. The many reports and papers covering the work in coal petrography, however, offer very little discussion that can be considered as critical appraisal of the technique. Criticism outside the Bureau most often has voiced questioning opinions concerning the accuracy of the method used of measuring coal components microscopically and classifying the coal into arbitrary types on the basis of the quantitative determinations. The principal purpose of this paper is to discuss in some detail and present data showing the results of certain investigative work done in the petrography laboratory on the accuracy of the Bureau&apos;s method of microscopic measurement of components in coal thin sections. Data from microscopic analyses on file made by G. C. Sprunk and H. J. O&apos;Donnell were freely used in the investigation, and a table of columnar analyses from an unpublished manuscript by Sprunk is included in this paper for reference. In the course of the experimental work a method was developed for measuring instrumentally with a planimeter the components shown in micrographs of selected thin sections. Measuring coal components with a planimeter furnished useful information for studying the accuracy of microscopically measuring the same components in thin sections. Korea, the ancient" Hermit Kingdom," is a peninsula jutting out from the coast of eastern Asia. By the natives it is called " Chosen," nfhich, translated, means " Land of the Morning Calm." It lies between the Yellow sea and the Sea of Japan. On the north it is separated from Manchuria and the Russian province of Primorsk by the Yalu and Tiumen rivers; on the south the Korcan straits interpose a rough voyage of 120 nliles to the nearest point in Japan. The entire country is situated between the parallels of 34O and 42O N. latitude. The surface of the country is made up of successive ranges of ul~glaciated mountains, separated by narrow, fertile, and more or less densely populated, valleys. Through all the obscure centuries of its history, Korea has succeeded in maintaining a monastic seclusion, over which, from time immeniorial until the late Chino-Japanese war in 1894, China exercised a shadowy sovereignty. Although Korea had been forced into slight foreign contact previously, her first forcign treaty was signed with Japan in 1876. Under the restraining guardianship of China, the Japanese treaty bore but infiignificant innovations for Korea; but when, in 1883, a treaty was made with the United States, the first of the western nations, a decade after the American gunboats, under Commodore Rodgers and Lieutenant Schley, forced their may up the Salee river, Korea awoke from her sleep of 4,000 years. The Eorean peninsula suddenly became the arena where the enterprises and individuals of many foreign nations met in fiercest rivalry. Out of this struggle grew two singularly successful American enterprises, both of which have played an important part in developing the natural resources of the country. NOT long ago I was called upon to conduct some experiments on the treatment of ores from the New Cornelia copper mine, Ajo mountains, Arizona, for the Calumet & Arizona Copper Co. The problem was a very interesting one and contained some unusual features. Incidental with this problem was the utilization of a large amount of low-grade pyrite in the Bisbee mines of the company, provided this could be accomplished by any feasible method. The New Cornelia mine is situated 45 miles south of Gila Bend, the nearest railroad point, on the Southern Pacific Railroad. It is about 160 miles, almost due west, from Tucson. This section is one of the most arid in the United States. The normal annual precipitation, as given by the United States Weather Bureau covering a period from 1870 to 1901, is 3 to 5 in. During June and July, 1913, the records kept by the company gave the following results. These are all I have available, but they show the enormous evaporation that can be expected, which may be a factor in leaching operations on a large scale.

Referring to the article by R. J. Charles and P. L. de Bruyn, let us assume that W = weight of glass bar; P = weight of hammer; e = total deformation; K = unit of deformation; K = potential stress energy; E = modulus of elasticity; L = length of the bar; 7 = coefficient of inertia; h = height, ft; V = velocity, fps; and a = cross section area. The portion of kinetic energy which is effective in producing stress energy in a fixed bar struck horizontally is given by the formula" 1 + 1/3 W/P K =1+1/3w/p/(1+1/2w/p)2 P.V2/2g = Ph where 1 + 1/3 W/P ? (1 + 3W/P/(1=1/2w/p)2 [8] Putting e e = W/P =------------ From the above equation it can be seen that the maximum transfer of kinetic energy to stress energy is when e = 0 or W/P = 0 which indicates that the weight of the hammer must be very large as compared with the weight of the impacted rod. Eq. 8 diametrically opposes the conclusions reached by the authors of this article. In fact, if their suggestions were followed to the extreme when e = co when P = 0, there would be no transfer of kinetic energy to stress energy at all, as 7, becomes zero. Eq. 8 presumes that the velocity with which the stress is propagated through the bar is infinite, whereas the authors claim that the compression waves reflected are reaching the struck end of the bar prior to the complete transfer of the kinetic energy to cause such modification of the conditions there as to make them reach the reverse conclusions demonstrated by the above formula. That such interference exists is unquestionably demonstrated by the authors and others. However, if my observations are correct, such interference for this specific experiment and also for practical comminu- tion is insignificant, and the conclusions of the authors are in error and must be reversed to comply with Eq. 8. Eq. 5, w. = AE 2/2, given by the authors on page 51, is derived from the following equation (Eq. 9): K = 1/2Pe, where P = Sa, S = ?E, e = EL, and L = 1. The above formula, Eq. 9, cannot be applied in this case. This formula is applicable for static loads where the load increases from zero up to its final value, P, in such a way that the deformation at different instants is proportional to the loads acting at those instants and actually represents the area of a right triangle in the strain load diagram of base e and height P. The typical photographs shown in Figs. 3 and 4 represent the familiar strain load diagrams, and since the line of the wave marks the existence and intensity of the strain with the unquestionable conclusion that such strain has been caused by the action of a load acting continuously all along the wave until it reached the horizontal axis, the work stored at this point is represented by the area under the wave line and the horizontal axis and not by the area of the fictitious triangle given by the authors. Then if this is correct, even visual estimation of these areas at gage stations given in the typical photographs of Figs. 3 and 4 suffice to contradict the authors&apos; calculation given in Figs. 6a and 6b and Figs. 7a and 7b. The typical photographs presented by Charles and de Bruyn show a considerable variation of the intensity of the strain at different stations but very small variation of areas which actually represent the stress energy at the corresponding stations. And, apparently, by squaring the small quantities, the authors magnified their error tenfold. J. M. Frankland&apos;s paperV iscusses the relative strain intensity and not the total energy for different types of impact loading. He states in his paper, "The reader is explicitly warned not to confuse the results in this report with those obtained when the load is applied by a blow as from a hammer. In this case the peak load rises to very large but mostly unknown values. The accompanying large deflections and stresses are the result of high values of P, not of the dynamic load factor n. According to Frankland "the dynamic load factor" is the numerical maximum of the response factor. It therefore appears that the authors followed the same procedure in obtaining the relative strain energy ab-

Since the presentation, by the writer, of the initial paper on the embrittlement of copper,1 the subject has been investigated further along two separate lines. The first series of investigations involves the "double-deoxidized" coppers, while the second series is devoted to single deoxidizers other than those used in the investigations reported upon last year. The object of these experiments is to develop a type of copper that will show the minimum of detrimental effects after having been exposed to alternate oxidation and reduction. The fabrication of this material necessitates the use of alternate oxidizing and reducing atmospheres, at temperatures ranging up to 900" C. Following this treatment it is essential that the soundness and strength of the copper be unimpaired, even in sections of only a few thousandths of an inch in thickness. Materials The ensuing report embodies three separate groups of materials, which may be classified as follows: 1. Double-deoxidized copper using silicon and calcium boride. 2. Copper deoxidized with calcium. 3. Double-deoxidized copper using constant calcium content (0.075 per cent) plus silicon, or calcium boride. Last year, T. S. Fuller, of the General Electric Research Laboratory, suggested that if a properly deoxidized copper had sufficient deoxidizer residual in the material, this excess material might increase the resistance of the copper to the oxidation reduction cycle. In consequence of this suggestion, two small lots of "double-deoxidized" copper were prepared. The first, lot A, was made by adding 0.03 per cent silicon as the deoxidizer, following this by an addition of 0.55 per cent calcium boride immediately before pouring. The second, lot B, contained the same ingredients, but these were added in the reverse manner. Inasmuch as these lots were tested separately from the materials about to be described, it must be borne in mind that the materials cannot be grouped together, and are not directly comparable.

IN 1939 Bitter and Kaufmann1 suggested that iron, precipitating from a copper-rich, Cu-Fe solid solution, appears initially as coherent particles of r-Fe which transform to the body-centered-cubic form of iron when the alloy is cold worked. Since then there has been considerable discussion, supported only by indirect evidence, regarding the validity of the concept. For example, Reekie, Hutchison, and Hether-ington2 interpreted the changes in electrical resistance accompanying the aging of Cu-Fe specimens in terms of a coherent 7-Fe precipitate which transformed to the incoherent a-phase during long aging or cold working. Greninger- ound that Cu-Fe alloys which had been water quenched from 1050" and then held at 650°C for 3 hr changed from weakly to strongly ferromagnetic as the aged wire was subsequently cold worked. He also found diffraction lines corresponding to body-centered-cubic iron in Debye-Scherrer patterns given by aged and worked specimens but lines corresponding to only one face-centered-cubic phase in specimens which had been aged but not worked. Knoppwost,&apos; and later Cech and Turnbull,5 found that aged Cu-Fe specimens showed a slight increase in ferromagnet-ism after they had be? cooled in liquid nitrogen. Very recently Denney6 followed the kinetics of the precipitation reaction as indicated by the saturation magnetization, hardness, and diffuse X-ray effects. The experimental results reported by all of the authors mentioned above are readily explained in terms of the Bitter and Kaufmann concept. However, most of the evidence is indirect when used to define the structural changes involved. It was the aim of the present investigation to determine the mechanism of precipitation of iron from a Cu-Fe solid solution in the light of available published information and with additional new and more direct experimental data. Experimental Method At 1060°C copper will contain up to 3 atomic pct Fe in equilibrium solid solution.7 The solvus slopes rapidly toward lower iron concentration, so that at 600°C only about 0.5 pct Fe remains in solution at equilibrium. Below the eutectoid temperature (850°C), the iron-rich phase in equilibrium with the copper-rich solid solution consists of body-centered-cubic a-Fe. Above 850 °C the equilibrium iron-rich phase is face-centered-cubic r-Fe. The alloy to be studied was made by melting electrolytic iron and OFHC copper by induction under vacuum in an Alundum-lined crucible. The metal was held molten for about 5 min, after which time the power was turned off and the crucible was tipped about 70" to promote directional solidification. The resulting ingot, containing 2.5 wt pct Fe by analysis, was clean, large grained, and free of gross segregation. Slices % in. thick were cut from the ingot, rolled to 1/8 in. in thickness, homogenized in hydrogen at 1060°C for 24 hr and, finally, quenched in cold water. Specimens for all subsequent tests were made from these slices. Squares measuring about 1 cm on a side were cut from the slices to make specimens for studying hardness and microstructure. Wires (0.020 in.) for the Debye-Scherrer survey were drawn from 1/8 in. sq rods which had been cut from the homogenized slices. " The obscurity which still veils from us the true nature of veins will become more and more cleared up when they can be considered in connection with the geological structure of the regions in which they occur."* These words, according to Lossen, the biographer of the late Dr. A. von Groddeck, of Clausthal, were the last received by him from that eminent man, perhaps the most far-sighted and carefully progressive of recent writers on ore-deposits. They seem to me to form a fitting text for what I am about to say; since I find that many of the conclusions at which I have arrived by my own study of the structural relations of ore-deposits, or, in other words, of the structural and dynamic geology of the regions in which they occur in this country, have been similarly determined by him within recent years in Europe, and especially in his home field of work, the Hartz. I shall not enter upon a detailed account of how far other workers may have arrived at similar conclusions with myself, since these questions of priority are of little interest, except to those immediately concerned; but will briefly present the methods by which, in my work in this country, I have arrived at certain generalizations, and will point out the practical bearing which they may have upon the work of mining engineers. In my first thorough and systematic examination of an important group of ore-deposits, viz., that of Leadville, Colorado, I was enabled, through the generous facilities afforded me by the then Director of the Geological Survey, Mr. Clarence King, to make a most elaborate and detailed study of the geology, not only of the immediate vicinity of the mines, but of the adjacent mountain regions, based upon accurate topographical and underground maps, and

METALLURGISTS handling lead and zinc ores have long been familiar with the spectrograph as a routine analytical tool, as its earliest regular use by American industry was in controlling impurities of zinc metal and its alloys. This application has been extended to other metal industries on an extensive scale, accompanied by refinements of procedure to such an extent that a large part of some metals produced, especially magnesium, aluminum and steel, are checked only by spectrographic methods for conformity to specifications. The spectrographic analysis of ores and other poorly conducting powdered solids presents difficulties not encountered with metallic samples, which can be arced or sparked as self-electrodes or can be readily dissolved, so that their solutions can be analyzed, as in the American Society for Testing Materials standard methods for zinc and zinc-base alloys. Spectra of powdered solid samples can be prepared by using carbon electrodes provided with a crater of suitable size, into which the sample is packed. Ore samples and many other powdered solid materials usually analyzed in the chemical and metallurgical laboratory are more complex and varied in composition than samples of metals produced in large tonnages. More preliminary work therefore is usually necessary in devising a spectrographic method for analyzing a given type of powdered sample than for analyzing metal samples, in order to use that method with confidence. The knowledge that the standard samples and unknowns produce equivalent line intensities at equal concentration is the fundamental basis of any quantitative spectrographic method. On the other hand, powdered samples have an advantage over metals in that any desired number of chemical compounds can be mixed dry in any desired ratio to produce a synthetic standard. Experience has shown, however, that spectra of elements in finely divided compounds introduced into a standard in preparing a synthetic ore sample do not always behave in the electric arc in a manner that produces spectral line intensities similar to those observed at the same concentration in a natural mineral. In ore samples minor elements frequently are contained in the crystal lattice of larger particles of an abundant ore mineral. Their dissociation and volatilization from the sample into the arc then proceeds differently in the standard and sample, with resultant differences in intensity. During the past 10 years I have devised and applied several quantitative spectrographic methods for determining various elements in rocks and minerals in connection with studies on their geochemistry,1 but the incentive has gradually changed since the summer of 1940 to the specific practical problem of searching for domestic sources of rare and strategic metals. GENERAL OUTLINE For more than one hundred years, asbestos ore has been mined on Les Mines d’Amiante Bell&apos;s property at Thetford-Mines , Quebec, Canada. In 1878, the first tons of fibre were produced. The mine operated as an open pit until 1951 at a yearly production of about 330 000 mt of ore. Since 1951, the mine has operated underground using a block caving method. The mine produced 725 000 mt per year until 1978, when the rate of production was increased to 1 100 000 mt. The ore was produced entirely fm the first lift on 650 level until 1976. Then, a second lift on 950 level was put into operation to replace production facilities fm the first lift which is now exhausted. Annual fibre production is 72 500 mt with grades £ran 3 to 7. The total work force is 600 people. The host rock is a peridotite partially serpentinized. The asbestos fibre seams occur as stockwork deposit structurally controlled by talcose shear zone. The geological rock formations are heavily jointed and have a wide range of competence. Asbestos ore bodies have an heterogeneous nature which des difficult geological interpretation. THE GRIZZLY METHODS A full gravity method was used on the first level where the caved ore was drawn from finger raises onto grizzly bars spaced at 480 mn. Oversize blocks were reduced by secondary blasting. The ore fell by gravity in- to the ore pass below the grizzly chamber and was loaded into 5.7 mt haulage cars through a 1.2 m wide chute. Access to the undercut drift was fm the grizzly drift through finger raises. The undercut trough was drilled and blasted in a 1.2 m interval ring sequence into a slot situated at the end of each panel. The undercut stope was emptied through the finger raises. The undercut retreated from South to North at blast interval determined by the finger raises spacing. Fig. 1 represents the various steps involved with the grizzly method. Extraction drift dimensions were opened 1.8 m wide x 2.4 m high with anchor rock bolts and wire mesh where safety required them during excavation. Grizzly chambers were excavated at 2.4 x 2.4 x 4.6 m long on a 7.6 x 7.6 m grid spacing. Ore passes with dimensions of 1.5 x 1.5 m were developed from the haulage drift. On the extraction level, headings were drilled with jacklegs and cleaned by slusher into ore passes to the haulage chutes. The support used in the grizzly chambers was square concrete structure with 150 mn H beam reinforcement. The H beam was partially buried in the concrete and had one free face to allow for difference frequency of blast vibration between concrete and steel. The supported brow of the chamber had an opening 1.5 x 2.1 m. Ore passes were ring concreted 150 mn thick without any reinforcement. A 24 MPa compressive strength concrete was pumped and poured in pre-assembled forms. Based on the success of this method on the first level, the same layout was repeated on the second level. With the start of undercutting on the second lift, signs of deterioration were noticed in extraction drifts. At first, there was great concern as the operators were confident that standard repair techniques could cope with such a situation. An intensive program of support repair and a reduction of draw resulted. The following method of repairs were used: 1) Steel square sets of 150 mn H beam at 0.6 m intervals were installed. 2) This was reduced later to 0.3 m interval and eventually to a skin to skin steel structure. 3) Yieldable arches were introduced spaced at 0.9 m intervals, linked laterally with 150 m. H beam. 4) The yieldable arches spacing was then reduced to 0.46 m and eventually installed skin to skin. However, this support was not successful.

The Mogollon mining district, New Mexico, has received little public attention, although for 15 years it has been the leading silver producer of the state; it is situated in a region remote from the principal lines of travel, and its activities have usually been limited to the operations of two or three companies. The value of the total production of the district in the 44 years of its history has been estimated at $15,000,000. For the years 1904 to 1917, inclusive, the output was: gold, $4,370,000; silver, 10,042,000 oz.; copper, 874,862 lb.; total value, approximately $10,500,000. In 1913 the district contributed 80 per cent. of the total silver production of New Mexico, but in 1917 only 41 per cent., due to serious interruption in the operations of the leading producer. Since 1914 the silver output has diminished one-half, and the present high value of silver is nearly offset by the increase in cost of production. The output of gold has rarely exceeded 35 per cent. of the total for New Mexico. The ratio of silver to gold, by weight, has averaged 46:1 based on the whole output of the district. Location and Topography The town of Mogollon is 75 mi. (121 km.) by a poorly located highway ,. from the nearest railroad terminals, at Silver City and Tyrone. All supplies are transported by motor trucks and teams. The area, sometimes called the Cooney Mining District, lies on the western flank of the Mogollon Mountains, which occupy the western part of Socorro County. The elevations drop steeply on the west to the valley of the San Francisco River, adjacent to the Arizona boundary. The topography is very rugged, the whole area being sharply dissected; deep canyons with steep gradients and rugged walls are characteristic of the whole western slope of the Mogollon Range. The main canyons i run east and west, and usually maintain a flow of water during the entire year. As would be expected in a region of such deep dissection, the mines are generally dry. The mountain ridges between the canyons have altitudes varying from 7000 to 10,000 ft. (2130 to 3050 m.) and drop sharply, on their western face, to the floor of the San Francisco Valley at an elevation of 5000 ft. (1525 m.). Erosion has been rapid, and the
