Kamioka Mine of Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd. is the largest lead-zinc mine in Japan and is composed of two mines, Tochibora Mine and Mozumi Mine, which have daily production rates of 5,200 metric tons and 1,800 metric tons of crude ore respectively. In the mines, there are many massive pyro-metasomatic deposits which have been derived from the replacement of limestone. The deposits are composed of skarn minerals which mainly contain hedenberite. The country rock is generally hard and fine-grained gneiss. These deposits have been mined by means of the sublevel stoping method, induced block caving method and sublevel caving method at Tochibora Mine and mainly by the cut and fill method at Mozumi Mine. Since the 19601s, the trackless mining system has been introduced successfully into both mines, and is still promoted to be applied over wider areas. The underground hauling system is simplified remark- ably and much improved by adopting trackless ramps to the existing vertical and horizontal underground framework. Moreover, through the combination of the trackless mining system with the mining methods stated above, a notable increase in efficiency has been achieved. This is due to the high performance of the introduced machinery, reductions in man power of miscellaneous jobs, and also has enabled a highly efficient performance through its mobility. In addition, as it becomes possible to realize a flexible development to meet the irregularly shaped deposits and also becomes much easier to recover the remaining pillars by secondary mining, the extraction rate of ore has been improved considerably. With the introduction of the trackless mining system, the development method has been changed, thus former hand-hold leg-drills are now mostly re- placed by jumbo-type drills. Repair shops for Load-Haul-Dump machines also have been provided with an established service system. Reinforcement and rearrangement of the ventilation system has been carried out.

During the past few years a number of large and highly productive oil fields have been discovered in the United States. The immediate oversupply which has resulted, together with the circumstances under which the new fields have been operated, has created exaggerated impressions of the importance and magnitude of these fields. Statements as to the many years during which individual fields could supply the entire demand of certain areas, as to the overwhelming effect of these fields on the industry, and as to their greater size compared with any of the older fields have become so common as to attract little attention. For example, East Texas is commonly considered as the "greatest oil field" and a review of the development of the field for 1931 is so headed in one of the leading trade journals.' East Texas is unquestionably a very great oil field. However, some students of the field have estimated its ultimate recovery at about one billion barrels, and the Bradford field discovered in 1875 is also estimated, by competent engineers, to have about a billion barrels still recoverable by water drive, in addition to more than 300,000,-000 bbl. it has already produced. If East Texas should produce the two or three billion barrels assigned to it by more optimistic estimators, it will, though considerably greater than Bradford, still fall far short of it in importance to the industry. A reasonable doubt also exists as to whether East Texas will exceed the Midway-Sunset field which has produced about 720,000,000 bbl. and still has important reserves. Again, in importance to the industry, Midway-Sunset has been greater than East Texas can ever be. Relative Importance of Oil Fields The principal purpose of this study is to compare, on the basis of their importance to the industry, a considerable number of the major fields which have been developed in the United States. Some remarks are also made as to the estimates of reserves in certain fields now in course of development, since the writer believes that the conditions under which these fields are operated lead to estimates of recoverable reserves which

8.1-1. History and Description of Shovels. The history of excavating machinery is not clearly defined but the machines seem to have been originally developed for dredging activities, principally involving rivers and harbors. The first, as far as can be determined, was a steam "spoon dredge" developed by Grimshaw of Boulton and Watt of Sunderland, England, in 1796. The land machine forerunner of the present-day power shovel was not developed until 1835. It was invented by William Smith Otis, a young partner of a Philadelphia contracting firm by the name of Carmichael and Fairbanks. The moving force behind this invention was the heavy activity in railroad construction. From this early start the power shovel has developed from steam powering to internal-combution-engine powering and to electric powering. In both directions it has developed to its present state of a finely engineered and precision-built tool. Through the interim the railroad-type shovel, about a half-swing arrangement designed especially for making railroad cuts and mounted on rails, was developed. The rail-mounted shovel gradually gave way to the full revolving shovel. It was high on the list in 1912 and was practically extinct by 1927. From the beginning, a few of the small revolving shovels designed primarily for the general contractors' market had found their way into quarry and mining operations. During this same period, the stripping shovel had been introduced-a 2 ½ cu. yd., 100-ton, full revolving stripping machine with a 41 ft boom. Although this shovel was designed especially for stripping, it was also used for heavy-duty, open pit mining service. In 1925 the heavy-duty, full revolving quarry and mine machine was developed. Strip mining shovels evolved through a somewhat separate path. Hand digging plows and mule-drawn slip scrapers were first reported used by Kirkland, Blakeney and Groves near Danville, Illinois for strip mining

The term "secondary aluminum" frequently is used loosely and often is considered synonomous with "inferior quality." Under war conditions, when every pound of material must contribute its share to the job at hand, this type of thinking is most unfortunate. Actually, given a supply of segregated scrap, an experienced smelter can produce remelted ingot of good quality, comparing closely to the analysis of the original material, and of considerable value of the war effort. The alloys he can produce are, of course, somewhat controlled by the analysis of the available scrap and, by the very nature of things, some of his production is not suitable for indiscriminate use. However, remelted scrap ingot provided about 273,2 per cent of this country's domestically-produced 1942 aluminum supply and probably will comprise about 39 per cent of the 1943 supply. (Canadian production is excluded from these figures.) That this part of the supply remains important is indicated by a recent report that "requirements" for the second quarter of this year were about 14 per cent greater than the supply, even though that supply will be almost twice the prewar annual production. (And those requirements, incidentally, were prepared after many conservation measures had been taken into account.) Since W. Bonsack recently has published a paper2 on the effects of the various alloying elements and impurities on the properties of aluminum, and such con¬siderations really are the important ones in a discussion of the metallurgy of secondary aluminum, it is planned to restrict this discussion more to a consideration of the sources, general characteristics and possible uses of these materials. For the purpose of this discussion, mill (or run-around) scrap may be disregarded and only plant scrap and obsolete scrap considered. Plant scrap, of course, is that scrap which is generated during the production of some part or assembly from a fabricated form of aluminum, such as sheet, tubing, forgings, castings or the like, and it may consist of solids (including rejected parts or subassemblies) or of machinings. To the extent that the several alloys are effectively segregated and the material is properly identified, the composition after remelting can be rather closely controlled or predicted. Obsolete scrap, on the other hand, is the "junk" which accumulates because of the wearing out or breakage of some piece of equipment. Although it is almost always in the form of solids, the accumulation includes many different alloys (often in the same assembly) and may include a considerable amount of nonaluminum material. The "metallics" recovered from drosses also contribute a portion of this class of material. The composition after remelting, therefore, may vary over rather wide limits and can not be very accurately predicted in any specific instance. The purpose of pulverizing coal before burning it is to make available every heat unit it contains. Machinery has been developed which will pulverize coal in one operation, delivering it to bins in front of the furnaces at an expenditure of about 17 hp.-hr. per ton, in a medium-sized plant. The cost of the operation depends upon the amount of moisture that must be expelled before pulverizing, the cost of labor, and the cost of coal delivered at the plant. At a small plant, requiring a pulverizer with a capacity of only 1/2 ton per hour, the cost per ton pulverized will naturally be greater than at a plant requiring the largest pulverizer, with a capacity of 7 tons per hour. :The first step is to reduce large lumps to a size suitable for drying uniformly, before passing to the pulverizing mills; this is done in rolls, at a single pass. The second step is the elimination of moisture, in order to facilitate pulverizing to great fineness, while also increasing the heating effect and the temperature attainable when the coal is burned. There are other mechanical advantages in the handling of dried coal. Driers are now manufactured which are able to eliminate moisture without distilling any of the volatile combustible matter in the coal; they are fired by hand or with pulverized fuel. The heat first surrounds the shell of the drier, being confined within a chamber where complete combustion takes place; the heated gases are then led through a duct to the discharge end of the drier and enter the inside of the shell at a temperature not exceeding 300" F. This temperature is maintained by the operator and is indicated by a pyrometer. Volatile combustible matter is not likely to be distilled until the temperature rises above 400" F. On discharging from the drier, the coal is usually passed over a magnetic separator in order to prevent pieces of iron from going to the pulverizer. Two types are used: a magnetic pulley which automatically discharges its collection of iron, and a lifting type, from which the iron is removed by hand when convenient. In the operation of pulverizing, the coal should preferably be reduced until 95 per cent. will pass through a 100-mesh and 70 per cent. through a 300-mesh sieve. Such a product is obviously an almost impalpable powder.

The: iron-rich iron-nickel alloys have attracted considerable academic interest in recent years. The carbon-free alloys are of minor practical importance, but they are the base of many alloys with various outstanding properties. The iron-nickel alloys, therefore, have been investigated extensively regarding both their structures and their properties. The researches on these alloys up to 1938 have been collected and critically reviewed by J. S. Marsh,l and will be discussed in some detail in the sections of this paper dealing with specific subjects. These numerous investigations have not succeeded in establishing the equilibrium conditions in this system. Alloys containing more than a certain amount of nickel (8 to 10 per cent Ni) undergo the allotropic transformation extremely sluggishly, both on heating and cooling, showing a large hysteresis," which is not dependent upon the rate of cooling and persists even with very slow rates of cooling.3 Honda4 and Merica4 have therefore resigned themselves to proposing a diagram (Fig. I) for practical use, illustrating the structural relations under commercial conditions instead of attempting to establish the true equilibrium diagram. Marsh is less pessimistic and suggests an equilibrium diagram (Fig. 2) which conforms approximately to the facts known about this system. Recent X-ray investigations by Owen-Sully5 and Bradley-Gold-schmidt6 on powdered alloys indicate that the previous work on the iron-nickel system yielded very incomplete results. These investigators agree (Figs. 3 and ,+) that alloys in the powdered form containing more than 8 per cent and up to about 35 per cent Ni decompose into a stable heterogeneous mix-

RIMMING steels derive their name from their action during solidification in the molds. As a result of incomplete deoxidation, gas is evolved during freezing, and the metal has a characteristic rolling action. The metal rises along the mold walls and descends in the center of the ingot. This action keeps the top of the ingot open and the advancing rim of solid metal can be seen. The rim grows until the rolling action is insufficient to prevent the top of the ingot from freezing or until the action is stopped by capping the ingot with a heavy plate. The violence of the reaction and its characteristics, such as growth or drop in the molds, are determined by the composition, the furnace practice, and the deoxidation in the ladle and in the molds. Though rimming steels represent a large proportion of the amount of plain carbon steel made, they have received comparatively little attention in the technical literature. The manufacture of rimming steels has been described by Hibbard, 1, 2 Fleming,3 Pierce4 and Jackson.5 The reactions occurring during rimming have been considered from the theoretical point of view by Chipman and Samarin.7 The structure of rimmed-steel ingots has been discussed by Nead and one of the present authors.6 Meyer,8 in studying segregation, investigated the distribution of carbon, sulphur and phosphorus in rimmed-steel ingots by analyzing the rim and core of blooms. In their studies of segregation, the Joint Committee of the Iron and Steel Institute and the British Iron and Steel Federations studied distribution in one billet and one ingot of rimmed steel.. A detailed study of the distribution throughout the ingot has not been published. The present investigation was undertaken to determine accurately the distribution of carbon, manganese and sulphur in normal rimmed ingots and the general distribution of other common elements present. The study included some work on the effect of pouring conditions and furnace practice on the distribution, though there is still much to be done in this direction. The structure of a rimmed ingot that has been split by dynamiting and a schematic diagram of the zones in the ingot are illustrated in Fig. 1.

Core analysis is a recent development in the field of petroleum technology. The earliest work on this subject was done in connection with evaluating and planning secondary oil recovery by water-flooding. Present-day analysis of sands of flush fields requires new and independent interpretations of the data provided by cored material. Particular attention is being paid to the development of rapid, routine methods for measuring physical characteristics of sandstone, such as permeability, porosity and grain size, as well as the sand's fluid content. Permeability may be defined as the fluid-passing capacity of a rock. For a sandstone to be permeable it must be possible to pass a measurable quantity of fluid through the material in a finite period of time. The common unit of permeability is the darcy, which may be defined as the rate of viscous flow, in milliliters per second, of a fluid of one centipoise viscosity through a porous medium having a cross section of one square centimeter, under a pressure gradient of one atmosphere (76.0 cm. Hg) per centimeter.' For convenience the subunit millidarcy, or one-thousandth darcy, is often used. Porosity is defined as the fluid-containing capacity of a rock and is usually expressed as a percentage ratio of the total pore volume to the rock or bulk volume. Since measurement of only the effective or communicating pore volume is often made, porosities are distinguished as total or effective.2,3 Net effective porosity is defined as the net pore volume available for oil and gas. Oil and water content of sand is measured and expressed either as the percentage saturation of the total pores or of the bulk rock. The oil content may also be expressed as the percentage saturation of the net effective pores. In connection with water-flooding, methods of core analysis were developed to furnish data that could be used in determining the quantity of recoverable oil14-6 and the probable rates at which various sands or divisions of a sand open to the wells would take water or produce oil. The ever increasing array of information concerning the measurement of the effect of the welding process on the properties of a steel is an indication of the tremendous effort that is being expended in this field. The methods that have been considered may be divided into two groups: first, those that measure directly the effect of welding on the ductility of a steel, and, second, those that observe the change in some property, such as the hardness of the heat-affected zone, and assume a direct correlation between this change and the resultant ductility. The nick-bend test is a direct method designed for studying the effect of welding on the ductility of a steel. The test specimen (Fig. I) consists of a bar cut from a plate with a bead weld on the surface. The specimen is prepaxed with a saw-notch placed so as to restrict deformation to the heat-affected zone under the bead weld when tested as a static bend. Failure is caused by rupture of the low-ductility metal in the heat-affected zone. The angle at maximum load is used as an index of the effect of the welding process on the material. In the development of the nick-bend test considerable scatter was noted in some of the results, although the agreement of duplicate specimens welded at the same time and tested consecutively was excellent. Upon further investigation it was found that the change in ductility was dependent upon the interval of time between the welding operation and the testing of the specimen. For the six steels of Fig. 2, the angle at maximum load in lour cases was doubled and in one case was tripled. All steels that have been studied show an improvement in the angle of bend for longer intervals between welding and testing. EIGHT years ago in this department we had a column on the daiquiri cocktail, which, as we pointed out at that time, was invented by mining engineers. Since then we have said little or nothing about alcoholic drinks, but having set the precedent perhaps we may now pass along a little information about martinis. We have observed that as an aperitif the martini has become increasingly popular with men, so much so that we always feel a bit peculiar if we order something else. And the call is not for just a martini either; it must be a dry martini, and some of our friends are extremely particular on this point. The matter has achieved such importance that The New York Times devoted half a page to it a few Sundays back. Several recipes are given which may be useful to some of our members when entertaining visitors from this part of the country: The standard martini is said to be half gin, half Italian vermouth, two dashes orange bitters, and a pickled onion and twist of lemon peel. This progresses to the very dry martini, which calls for five parts gin and one part vermouth with an onion, olive, or lemon peel. Several alternatives are offered for the manufacture of the very, very dry martini. One is to pour a little vermouth into the mixing glass and pour it out again before mixing gin and ice. A second way is to put the ice in a sieve, hold it over the sink, and pour a little vermouth over it; then put the ice in the mixing glass. A third is to let the draft from an electric fan blow across an open vermouth bottle toward the mixing glass. Then the ultimate is the awfully dry martini, obtained by setting the vermouth bottle next to the mixing glass and turning the bottle slowly so that the label is exposed to the gin for perhaps a second. The Times notes that Mr. Martini himself personally prefers vermouth and soda.

MoRe than two years ago, in making efficiency tests on our hot-blast stoves, I was surprised to discover a marked difference in temperature as indicated by a pyrometer inserted near a stove on blast, and the regular recording instrument situated near the bustle pipe. A special hole was then provided at the junction of the hot-blast main and the bustle pipe, and portable pyrometers with bare fire ends were used, both at this point and in the stove necks. I had occasion to make a number of such tests on various stoves on the same, furnace, the difference in temperature as shown by the two pyrometers varying chiefly with the temperature of the blast, and the distance of the stove from the furnace. However, this difference was always great, often averaging above 100" F., for the entire period of a stove on blast. Later, experiments were made with similar results on another group of stoves. The pyrometers used were properly standardized and checked against each other before and after each test. However, there was still a slight doubt as to the accuracy of the results obtained, as subsequently explained. But I have obtained corroboration of the magnitude of heat losses from blast-furnace hot-blast mains from two independent sources. I have learned from H. A. Brassert, Superintendent of Blast Furnaces, South Works, Illinois Steel Co., that he has recently done some experimental work similar to my own, and found temperature drops of the same order of magnitude. Also, C.,R. Lyle, of the Armstrong Cork Co., has made some interesting theoretical calculations, based on the thermal conductivity of fire brick, for the particular conditions of several of our tests; and his theoretical interpolations, all facts being considered, check our actual observations fairly well. I understand that Mr. Lyle expects to publish the results of his investigations. The authors enumerate the factors which appear, from their observations and practical experience of failure of aircraft components in Great Britain, to be responsible for causing a metal or alloy to fail by stress corrosion. The essential conditions for promoting failure by stress corrosion are: (I) tensile stress at the surface of the component, (either residual or applied), and (2) an attacking medium that may be a solution or a liquid metal. Particular attacking agents are effective only on certain metals. In all instances of stress-corrosion failure experienced, cracking of an intercrystalline form has occurred and examples of such failure in aluminum alloy, steel and copper alloys are described and illustrated. The relation between microstructure and stress corrosion is mentioned and methods of investigating the susceptibility to stress-corrosion failure of metallic materials are described. The precautions to be taken in selecting materials for particular aircraft components and the importance of adequate protection against chemical attack are considered. The authors have given a factual survey of stress corrosion and have made no attempt to advance any scientific explanation of the phenomenon.

While significant advances have been made in excavation of rock, largely in improvements in drilling, blasting, loading, and haulage, conventional operations have been improved until little feasible increase in efficiency or rate of advance appears possible. Tunnel-boring machines have been developed which will excavate at rapid rates in soft to medium- hard rock. Hypervelocity impact is being intensively investigated as a possible means of cutting and breaking rock, as well as lasers, electric current, explosive drilling, high frequency vibration, etc. The current development and use of high-velocity small-diameter water jets, metallic jets, and projectiles of various materials involve ultra-high-pressure phenomena of fundamental interest. Rock disintegration by water jets has been investigated in the USSR for over a decade. Large-diameter jets of low velocity are used to mine coal, and high-velocity capillary jets will cut and break rocks under laboratory conditions. Velocity ranges for breaking and cutting are dependent upon rock and jet properties, and pulsed jets break some rocks more easily than continuous jets. Spectacular laboratory results have been reported for breakage of unconfined blocks of some types of rocks. Compressors, pressure multipliers, gas explosion chambers, and water cannons have been used to generate jets. Jet properties, such as continuity, unit pressure, total pressure, and stability have been measured. Results agree with theory, although the latter has been established only for relatively low-velocity flow. Diameter, speed of traversing, and frequency of pulsed jets affect rock response. Investigations in Britain have only recently begun consideration of harder rocks and higher velocities, although water jet cores have been found to be more continuous at lower velocities than previously believed. Lower limits of jet velocity for rock cutting were established for the rocks investigated.

The administration of industrial organization today embraces more than the cost of production and selling prices. Competition is deeper seated than mechanical devices, overhead charges, and a shrewd manipulation of the markets. Despite the " down-to-the-minute " equipment and the "last word in organization," it is quite evident that "capacity production" will be an unknown quantity until the workman is considered as a producer, in relation to his home, as he is now considered in relation to industry. Whether or not a man shall do an honest day's work is as much a psychological condition as it is a matter of physical strength or skill. His attitude toward his work each morning is determined, to a large degree, by the environment of his home. Whether this attitude, good or bad, obtains the day through will depend entirely upon the one fact as to whether the corporation which employs him does or does not differentiate between the mechanical factor and the human factor in industry. To be more specific, sociological work, under whatever name, should be of such a character as to influence the life of a workman in such a manner as to establish a cooperative interest in his work, foster within him a spirit of contentment in his home, lead him so to employ his leisure time that he will not lower his efficiency as a workman, destroy his domestic happiness, or endanger his standing in the community as a citizen. While no fixed rules of procedure can well be formulated for the development of the work, yet definite lines of activities will readily present themselves as applicable to the individual needs of a community. This is especially true where community influences and agencies pertaining to general welfare are easily correlated. Any definite work attempted must be determined by the type of the

Taking up first the lead field, flotation concentrates offer serious difficulties in handling and in preparing for the blast furnace, quite aside from the problems presented to the furnaceman by the necessity of smelting smaller tonnages of material higher in grade and usually basic in character, with the consequent changes in flux requirements and furnace operation. As received at the smelter, these concentrates are always wet and usually of the consistency of sticky mud. Difficult enough to handle in warm weather, they are worse in winter, when it may be necessary to blast them out of the cars. They hang up in bins and chutes and stick to conveyors, requiring the constant attention of the operators. If dried they become like wheat flour, involving heavy dust losses in handling and in furnace operations. Roasting in hearth furnaces is more difficult than with coarser materials. Dust losses are increased and, what is more serious, the moist concentrates tend to form balls or nodules, which harden and pass almost unaltered through the furnace with consequent high sulfur in the product, while the unballed fine particles lie on the hearth in a dense bed, practically impenetrable to the oxidizing gases, so that roasting takes place only on the surface of the bed. A more prolonged roasting period is therefore required and the capacity of a given furnace is decreased. They are entirely too fine to be charged into the blast furnace, even if thoroughly roasted; excessive flue-dust losses, irregular operation and slowing up of the furnace would be the obvious result. Consequently, it was early recognized that flotation concentrates would have to be put in coarser condition for smelting and the universal method adopted has been the Dwight & Lloyd process of sintering. Marzke2 have shown that the a phase upon segregating from the 6 phase in the system copper-zinc takes the form of needles lying parallel to a [Ill] direction or some similar direction, such as [556], of the parent solid solution, and that the a phase upon segregating from the ß phase in the system copper-aluminum also takes the form of needles. By analogy they assume that in this case also the segregate needles lie parallel to the [ill] or [556] direction in the ß lattice. The purpose of this investigation is to determine whether the structures resulting from segregation of the a phases from the respective ß phases of the systems copper-tin and silver-zinc are analogous to those obtained by Mehl and Marzke in the systems copper-zinc and copper-aluminum. Segregation of the a Phase from the ß Phase in the Copper-tin System Preparation of the Alloy.—An alloy containing 74.92 per cent (by weight) of copper and the balance tin was chosen for this investigation. This alloy, as can be seen from a portion of the constitutional diagram, Fig. 1, of the system copper-tin by Hamasumi and Nishigori,3 with the proper heat treatment should segregate the « phase out of the a parent, solid solution phase. Of the methods that have been used for studying the chemical composition of coal, attack by reagents has not, in general, yielded much information. Most of the reagents used have been strong oxidants such as nitric acid or Schulze's solution. The use of a milder oxidizing agent, such as air at low temperatures, enables progressive changes in the character af the coal substance to be studied and thus helps toward an understanding of its constitution. British bituminous coals frequently have a banded structure. These bands (of four types) can be separated one from another and have been found to possess markedly different chemical characteristics, even when taken from contiguous portions of the same lump coal. It has been found convenient to give each of the ingredients of banded coal a distinctive name, more or less descriptive of its appearance, and the study of the chemistry of bituminous "coal" in England has resolved itself into a study of each ingredient separately. The coal chosen for this work was taken from the Top Hard seam at East Kirkby colliery, Nottinghamshire, a detailed chemical analysis of which has been recorded by Baranov and Francis.' The banded structure was well marked and the bands could readily be separated. The research was confined to the brilliant vitreous bands (vitrain), the dull hard bands (durain) and the "sooty partings" main); for previous work had shown that the fourth type, to which the name clarain has been given, is intermediate in character, chemically, between vitrain and durain. The method of experiment was, briefly, to draw a slow current of moist air through weighed samples (50 gm.) of the three ingredients, vitrain, durain, and fusain, in the form of powder (through a 60-mesh and on a 90-mesh sieve) contained in glass tubes which could be maintained at a constant temperature during prolonged periods. THE Balatoc mine, one of the Haussermann group,[t] is on the Island of Luzon, the largest of the Philippine group, about 260 km. north of Manila, and 12 km. from the city of Baguio. The Baguio district is the most important gold-mining area of the Philippines, with 14 producing mines in 1939, milling 2,3;8,894 tons of ore, yielding [P]40,881,048, approximately 55 per cent of the total Philippine production of [P]74,131,216. PRODUCTION HISTORY The Balatoc mine began production in January 1929 with a 150-ton cyanide mill. Increases in mill capacity have taken place as follows: March, 1932, to 350 tons June, 1933, to 470 tons December, 1933, to 515 tons July, 1934, to 700 tons December, 1934, to 1000 tons May, 1935, to 1200 tons October, 1938, to 1300 tons April, 1939, to 2000 tons January, 1941, to 2150 tons Production during the period of expansion has steadily increased in total value in spite of the fact that grade of ore milled has dropped-from $31.06 in 1929 to $5.78 in 1940. Annual reports give production as shown in Table 1, the average values being based on gold at the old price of $20.67 per ounce. [ ] GEOLOGY The ore occurs in quartz-calcite veins that vary in width from narrow stringers to mineralized zones 40 to 50 ft. wide. Wall rocks consist largely of diorites, with some andesite, and a fragmental breccia called locally the "Balatoc plug." Texture of the ore varies widely in the different veins-from a soft, highly altered, gouge material filled with quartz fragments through a soft, unaltered quartz-calcite to a hard, massive quartz ore. Three major vein systems have been extensively developed, and smaller amounts of work have been done on several others. These veins strike east-west to N. 60°, dipping south from 50° to 90°, and are essentially tension breaks between a series of faults or shears striking N. 30°E. to N. 50°E. and dipping southeast from 50°to 90°. The shear veins and tension veins probably formed more or less simultaneously,

THE years 1914-15-16 were a pioneering period in mining, milling, and copper metallurgy generally. It was uncertain just what path the crushing, grinding, and concentrating processes would take. This situation was quite embarrassing to the directors of some of our large porphyry properties, then being equipped for production. Inspiration had already made several designs for its proposed 15,000-ton concentrator, incorporating in them the latest devices developed in the art of gravity concentration, only to have the work vitiated by the rapid march of events. In a little improvised plant, built on ground that is now in the crater of subsidence over the Inspiration- Miami orebodies, flotation was being experimentally ' applied to Inspiration ore by Minerals Separation engineers in 1914, with results indicating that this process would be of major importance in the concentration of the sulfides. How best to apply it, and especially how to crush and grind the ore to the very much finer sizes required for the new process, was a serious question, properly to be answered only by doing it, in full- sized machines, under regular 'operating conditions.
