Metalliferous sediments are present through- out much of the ocean basins and are locally prominent in the sedimentary column on and near the Nazca plate of the east-southeast Pacific Ocean. They typically have anomalously high concentrations of the transition metals, and those on parts of the East Pacific Rise, the Bauer Deep, and other basinal depressions may contain more then 12% iron, 4% manganese, 0.1 % each of copper and nickel, and geochemically significant amounts of zinc, cobalt, molybdenum, arsenic, beryllium, silver, and possibly gold. Statistical interprerarions of chemical data indicate that most metals in sediments on the East Pacific Rise were derived from a hydrothermal component related to submarine volcanism, whereas those in basinal sediments accumulated from both hydrothermal and hydrogenous components of sedimentation. However, concentrations of the metals are controlled more by the absence of biogenic and detrital components than by nearness to centers of hydrothermal activity.

HAVING produced one ton of concentrate that contains the copper that can profitably be saved or recovered from anywhere between 3 and 60 tons of mine ore, the ore-dressing engineer passes the result of his handiwork over to the metallurgist for smelting. Essentially, the concentrate is a damp mass of finely ground material consisting of copper sulphide minerals; pyrite, the sulphide of iron; and gangue, usually silica and silicates of aluminum. The purpose of smelting is to produce metallic copper and a slag containing the iron and siliceous constituents by pyrometallurgy-the kind of metallurgy that employs fire and heat to produce the chemical reactions through which it attains its object. There are important phenomena in rock and soil mechanics that cannot be explained in terms of theories of homogeneous, isotropic materials. Subsidence of strata about mine openings is an example. In-situ stress measurements in nonisotropic sedimentary and metamorphic rocks is another. Patterns of joints, faults, fractures, and similar geologic features impart directional mechanical properties to rock masses that are locally isotropic or anisotropic. On the geologic scale, the nonhomogeneity of composite rock masses may, in certain instances, be dealt with as homogeneous anisotropy. The mechanics of large rock masses can, therefore, be expected to involve considerations of anisotropy. The source of the anisotropy is not relevant. Once the scale of observation is selected and the material is defined accordingly, the analysis of stress and deformation proceeds without regard to the numerical values of the material constants. There are also important phenomena in rock and soil mechanics that cannot be explained in terms of linear elasticity, theory. For the mechanical description of anisotropic geologic materials capable of deforming beyond the limit of purely elastic strains, a plasticity theory is required. The purpose of this chapter is to present a plasticity theory for anisotropic rocks and soils. The proposed theory is based on the work of Hill in anisotropic metal plasticity and represents an extension of his work so as to include anisotropic geologic materials. The point of departure from metal plasticity theory begins with the inclusion of the normal stresses as linear terms in the yield condition, which plays a central role in plasticity. Once the yield condition is established, the plastic strain increments are obtained immediately through the principle of normality. The classification here used is one of convenience only; it is not intended to include all known types of ore deposits. The characteristic features of the several well-marked types of primary mineralizations are described without reference to the ultimate source of their metals. The minerals of many deposits of obscure origin were probably introduced through fissures that are now healed, or are due to the migration of metals from such deposits. [ ] It is not within the scope of this book to enter into a general discussion of the genesis of ore deposits but, in view of the progress being made in our comprehension of the conditions under which ore deposits were formed, mention should be made of recent work. Zinc is made by the National Smelting Co. and its associates by both the horizontal retort process and the vertical retort process developed by the New Jersey Zinc Co. This paper deals only with the horizontal retort practice at Avonmouth. That the horizontal retort process does survive in all countries in some form or other is due to at least partial success in overcoming some of the inherent difficulties of the process. The horizontal retort furnaces ran into considerable difficulties when the product of the selective flotation of mixed lead and zinc ores became the normal material for treatment. It is necessary, therefore, to make some reference in connection with the process to the preliminary treatment of the ore prior to distillation.. Therefore we include some small reference to this aspect in our description. Furnace Design and Structure Of the types of furnaces in operation at the company's various works, those at Avonmouth are perhaps more typical of the trend to utilize large units, with a subsequent saving in costs, such as heating and supervision.

Sparry dolomite from all of the operating mines in the Viburnum Trend of Southeast Missouri have been found by cathodoluminescence microscopy to reveal a systematic pattern of banding resulting from a growth zoning within individual dolomite rhombs. Four principal bands have been recognized throughout the entire Trend and each of the major bands contain even finer internal banding. Minor bands a few microns in width can be correlated in specimens collected ten's of kilometers apart along the trend. The first three principal dolomite bands decrease from south to north. This feature, together with the fact that the white sparry dolomite crystals decrease in abundance from south to north in the Trend, suggests that a major source for the fluids was from the south. The application of cathodoluminescence microscopy to crystalline dolomite demonstrates a strong correlation between ore grade and the intensity of internal banding and dissolution textures.

It has been known for several years that in certain age-hardenable alloys precipitation of finely divided particles occurs simultaneously with the changes in physical properties; while, in other alloys, these changes take place prior to, or without any, precipitation. The silver-copper alloys are generally considered to be the classical example of the first group, and the aluminum-copper alloys (duralumin) are typical of the second group. The two types of aging are explained by the precipilation theory and the knot theory respectively.‡ It is well recognized now that these theories do not conflict with each other; the one used for a given aging system depends upon which way the alloy in question happens to age-harden. However, previous work on the aluminum-copper al1oys1,2 has shown that if the aging temperature is raised sufficiently the hardening will be accompanied by actual precipitation. In fact, it is quite probable that all of the so-called knot-hardening alloys will harden by precipitation at elevated temperatures. Therefore, a combination of the knot and precipitation theories is necessary to give a complete picture of the agehardening of these alloys, and indicates that knot formation and precipitation are not independent processes. To test the generality of this concept, it is necessary to show that the alloys that commonly harden by precipitation will harden prior to precipitation if the aging temperature is sufficiently lowered. For this reason, it would be well to carefully re-examine the aging characteristics of the silver-copper alloys at aging temperatures somewhat below those used by previous investigators. If hardening can be detected prior to precipitation in these alloys, it will lend great weight to the idea that knot forma-

INTRODUCTION Underground coal mining disturbs the original in-situ conditions which induces a series of strata activities and results in creating "mine pressures," the source of all ground control problems. Adoption of self advancing powered supports in modern longwall mining adds a new dimension to ground control problems and thus research. Roof stability, in general, refers to the integrity and stability of the immediate roof which is measured by the maximum exposed area and time duration without support. There are many factors that con- tribute to roof stability problems. In addition to mining height, rock property and stratum components and caving angle of the immediate roof, characteristics of joints and fissures and their degrees of development, faults and underground water, the operational techniques also play a very important role. This paper summarizes these operational techniques and methods of controlling stable and unstable roof. CLASSIFICATION OF THE IMMEDIATE ROOF There are many ways of classifying the roof (1). Vague references to tin-deposits in Mexico are scattered throughout technical literature, and that country has been looked to as a likely source of a part of the world's supply of till at no very distant date; but thus far nothing but occasional small lots have come forward, so that the notion has arisen that these mines are either mythical or unworkable. So far as I am aware, there has not yet been published any description of the tin-deposits of Mexico except a few brief references; and this paper, based on a study of them made in 1892, is therefore offered.

Coke is the product of dry distillation of bituminous coal, by which the volatile matter is driven off, producing a hard body of cellular structure. Not all bituminous coals will coke, and there has been much discussion regarding the substance which is present in coking-coals to distinguish them from dry coals. Professor Lewes says that the bituminous matter in coal is largely derived from the spores of fossil mosses. Resins are present in all soft coals, and contribute largely to the cementing of the coke. The resinates and hydrocarbons begin to distil out at moderate temperatures and leave the pitchy residual, which at 500' C. forms a mass already well caked together, if the proportion of humus residual is not too great. This coke is soft, but if the heat be raised to 1,000° C. the pitch decomposes further, leaving carbon, and Professor Lewes is convinced that the coking bond is due to these liquid products which distil off, leaving pitch, which then carbonizes and binds the mass into coke. Professor Parr concludes that the structures of the organic compouilds of the coal Which furnish the cemeding-material for coke, and which are apparently attacked by oxygen, have not been determined and seen] to vary somesvhat in different types of coal. However, they yield, on oxidation, humic acids of varying composition which decompose into powdery residues. Because of the complex nature of these substances and the difficulty experienced in isolating and identifying them, the theory of coking is still an open problem and the explanations advanced are largely hypothetical. In the coking process the volatile matter driven off in the oven consists mainly of tar, ammonia, and gas, familiarly known as by-products. Both the quality and quantity of coke and by-products vary greatly With the composition of the coal.

With the threatened falling off in production of the lighter oil pools of the Tampico embayment in Mexico, a general search of that country for oil-producing regions has resulted in renewed activity in the region of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, one of the first districts exploited in Mexico. Since the drilling of the first well in the San Cristobal section by the Pearson interests in 1902, drilling has been continuous, except during 1917-1921, when practically all development was stopped by the revolutionary activity. Early in 1921, a drilling campaign was inaugurated for the purpose of testing out the known salt-dome poolfi on the flanks of the salt masses, rather than on their tops where previous tests had been located. On Dec. 7, 1921, the Aguila Co., with which are consolidated the Pearson interests and which has been the only company active in developing this region, unexpectedly drilled into a sand horizon at 3015 ft. with its Conception well No. 18. The hole was unable to handle the production, as a 1400-ft. string of 121/2-in. casing was hanging in the hole, a salt-water horizon drilled through at about 800 ft., was not cemented off, and 3000 ft. of 4-in. drill stem with rotary bit was in the hole. This well's potential capacity was never determined, but it made 7000 bbl. of 25" Bé. oil through the bit and Pin. drill stem, in one of its sporadic flows before sanding up, and thus proved itself capable of the largest potential production of any well on the Isthmus. The well showed salt water before caving and sanding up with the drill stem still in the hole, and will probably never be used for production. Wells Nos. 22 and 23, drilled nearby, have proved disappointments after making good showings of oil. In the spring of 1922, Ixhuatlan wells Nos. 28 and 29, deep tests supposedly on the flank of the known salt cores in that field, went into solid salt; No. 28 at 2250 ft. and No. 29 at 2400 ft. A preceding paragraph treats of the irregular manner in which ore deposits occur and the complex factors that control their distribution; the occurrence of metals in oreshoots in individual deposits is equally irregular, and the factors that control such segregation are equally complex. While the dimen¬sions of oreshoots in individual deposits may not be foretold with any degree of accuracy, the occurrence of ore in shoots is not accidental, but is controlled by laws some of which are understood. Any one familiar with permutations and combina¬tions who stops to consider the variety of factors that control ore deposition, and their varying relative importance, will admit that the science of economic geology must advance greatly before the occurrence of oreshoots may be predicted accurately in advance of exploration. The segregation of minerals in any oreshoot must be referred to some condition, or combination of conditions, local to the oreshoot as compared with the remainder of the deposit of low¬grade or barren minerals. Among the localizing factors that have been recognized are, in filled fissures, the amount and distribution of open spaces available for ore deposition, and in replacement deposits, the degree of brecciation giving access to the replacing solutions; the intersection of veins with other veins, dikes, sheeted zones, or porous strata; the impounding of solutions by impervious strata; and the differing precipitative influences of enclosing rocks. A large proportion of important and well ¬defined oreshoots, especially in deposits of deep-seated origin, are not assignable to any of these factors. Natural gas influences the movement of oil through reservoir rock by affecting the physical properties of the oil and the pressure within the reservoir. The presence of gas bubbles changes the laws of flow and the distribution of forces. The problem of flow of oil and gas through a porous rock is complex, and most authors, in order to analyze their problems, have found it necessary to make or accept certain generalized assumptions. Some of these assumptions, particularly the ones dealing with capillary phenomena and moleculnr forces, have not received sufficient attention and by lack of understanding have often been misinterpreted. Herold1 has called attention to the resistance offered by gas bubbles in capillary spaces and has drawn some interesting conclusions with regard to the action of natural gas in a reservoir rock. He has duplicated an experiment of the French physicist Jamin, has interpreted his findings in terms of molar mechanics, and, from experimental observations, has made a number of assumptions which he later applies in discussing problems of natural flow and recovery of oil. The Jamin action is an assumption because it lacks a physical proof and has never been determined quantitatively. Tickel12 attempts to develop a formula expressing the work performed by a distorted bubble. H. A. Wilson, in the recent publication of the American Petroleum Institute on the function of natural gas, discusses the phenomenon in terms of classical physics. Both contributions are incomplete and offer no experimental data. This paper includes a study of the static condition of equilibrium of gas and liquid bubbles confined to capillary spaces. THE Sierra Mojada mining district is situated in western Coahuila, about 8 km. east of the Chihuahua state line, and about one-half way from the northern to the southern extremity of the state. It is at the terminus of the Mexican Northern R. R., 125 km. northeast of Escalón, Chihuahua; also about 240 km. due west of Monclova, Coahuila. The altitude is approximately 1500 m. above sea level. The Sierra Mojada valley is about 10 km. long, from east to west, with a width of 1 to 2 km. It is approached from the east through the Puerto del Oro, where the Mexican Northern R. R. enters the valley; the slope from west to east is gentle. The Sierra Mojada, of which about. 300 m. is an almost vertical wall, bounds the valley on the south side; on the north side, the slope to the crest of Sierra Planchada is more gradual, rising only 200 or 300 m. above the valley. Water is relatively scarce in the district, and there are no running streams. The rainy season, usually beginning at the middle of June, lasts through July, and occasionally into August or September. In some years the rains fail entirely. The slope of the ground is such that nearly all the water immediately runs off. The arroyos along 'the flanks of the mountains are not very deep, but in heavy rains, sometimes approaching cloudbursts, a tremendous volume of water rushes down them, carrying large boulders. A certain amount of seepage collects in the agglomerate, lying below the conglomerate, and is retained in the local fractures. Some shallow wells have been sunk in this agglomerate, and one well over 150 m. deep was sunk on, the Volcan ranch, supplying about 76 1. (20 gal.) per min. A considerable supply of water is collected in large earth reservoirs in and below the town of Esmeralda. In ordinary years this supply will last until January or February, after which the Volcan well has to be depended on until the next rainy season.

In 1915, the State of California passed a law of great scope and importance. This law has been in successful operation for a year and may be briefly described as an act " establishing and creating a department of the State Mining Bureau for the protection of the natural resources of petroleum and gas from waste and destrucbion through improper operations in production; providing for the inspection of petroleum and gas wells; requiring all persons operating petroleum and gas wells to make certain reports" and providing the necessary officers and assessments to carry out the provisions of the act. The statute provides for a separate department of the State Mining Bureau, under the general supervision of the State mineralogist, with a staff composed of a "state oil and gas supervisor" and four deputies. It rules that all petroleum and natural gas wells shall be drilled, operated or abandoned under the supervision of the State supervisor, who shall order such tests or remedial work as seems to him necessary to protect the interests of property owners and the general public. It also provides for a board of arbitration to consider orders given by the supervisor which are not acceptable to the well owner. Section 18 of the act, which is the provision that is directly related to this paper, requires ('the owner of any well referred to in this act to keep a careful and accurate log of the drilling of such well," and further requires that this log shall show the character and depth of the formations passed through or encountered in the drilling, particularly the location and depth of the water-bearing strata; the character of the water encountered (so far as ascertained); whether the water was shut off, and, if solat what point; that it shall show completely the amounts, kinds and size of casing used; the depth at which oil-bearing strata are encountered; the depth and character of the strata, and whether all water was successfully and permanently shut off so as to prevent percolation or penetration into the oil-bearing strata. As the work carried on by this Company, of which the writer has been in charge for the past two years, is somewhat unique, the following account of it may be of interest, and, on that account, is offered to the Institute without any attempt to claim this practice as the best. Mines. The mines supplying ore to the Company arc situated in three groups: the Guanaco field,.about 80 miles N.E. of the port of Taltal (lat. 25" S., long. 70" 30' W. of Greenwich); the Sierra Overa, about 63 miles S.W. of Taltal; and Paranao, about 42 miles due N. of Taltal (12 miles N. of the small town of Paposo, once famous for its copper-output). Guanaco. This field lies in the center of an absolutely waterless mountainous desert, where not a sign of vegetation can be found for miles. The dryness is such that ivory and horn crack and open, while raw-hide must be used in place of leather, which -would become worthless in a very short time. Water is brought about 21 miles by piping from the Cordillera, but only in small quantities, and costs in the Guanaco $7 (= $1.78 gold) per cubic meter. IT is generally recognized that "low temperatures" have a definite effect on the properties of metals and alloys. Furthermore, it is also generally understood that the effect is decidedly adverse. The possibility that the same low-temperature treatment might be employed for the purpose of improving certain properties of the .alloys has received less attention until recently, and the experimental and theoretical knowledge consequently is meager. The effect of low temperatures may be studied in two ways: by studying such properties as tensile strength, hardness, impact resistance, etc., at low temperature, and by studying the properties of alloys at room temperature after these alloys have been subjected to a low-temperature treatment. Even in the latter case, certain properties will differ materially from the same properties obtained on identical material but without cold treatment. In other words, subjecting alloys to cold treatment results in an irreversible change in mechanical properties. Changes of this character are usually indications of the appearance of a new phase or phases, and would be likely to occur in alloys which, either by virtue of their composition or by heat treatment, are retained at room temperature in a metastable condition. Consequently, studies of the effect of low temperatures logically should be conducted from the physicochemical point of view, since the results of such studies not only would furnish metallurgists with interesting theoretical data but would clearly indicate the classes of alloys that would hold promise of improvement, and, possibly, of new applications. As the present investigation deals with chromium and chromium-nickel alloys of iron of the stainless variety, it has been thought desirable to present the data concerning low-temperature properties of these alloys, available from the most recent and most comprehensive work of H: S.
