I have not before had the honor of offering to the Institute a communication on the subject of the variety of asphaltum which I described as uintahite; but several disconnected notices of it have appeared in the Transactions, and much additional information regirding it and its relations to other varieties of the asphalt group has been gathered together. Dr. Henry Wurtz has also discussed the nature of uintaite, and has endeavored to show that it should be considered a variety of grahamite.* We have also had an interesting paper upon."Asphalt and its Uses," from Captain F. V. Greene, containing much important technical information and a scheme of classification of the varieties of bitumen and of bituminous compounds. Northwest frontier is here defined as Alaska, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and northern British Columbia. The mineral potential of this area is great and will unfold in the decade ahead but now the largest single producer is the Pine Point lead-zinc mine in the NWT about 1200 km north of Edmonton, Alta., close to the south shore of Great Slave Lake. The mill, initially designed for 4540 mtpd, was expanded to 7250 mtpd in 1969. This operation is described in detail in Mining and Concentrating of Lead and Zinc, Vol.1, Chapt. 17, SME/AIME in the article by W. H. R. Gibney.

Several years ago, Mr. Robert A. Cook described and illustrated in our Transactions a mechanical coke-drawer, patented in 1891 by Mr. Thomas Smith of the Thorncliff Iron Works, Sheffield, England, and first introduced in the United States in 1896, at the coking-plant of the Latrobe Coal Co., Latrobe,Pa. This machine has not received any very extended application in this country, although it was successfully used in two places for a number of years. The present paper describes a new and simpler machine, containing few wearing-parts, and capable of withstanding continued rough usage. Anything which tends to prolong the general use of bee-hive ovens will be welcome to those who are interested in cheapening the cost of producing coke in such ovens, especially if it provides satisfactory mechanical means, replacing the hard labor involved in drawing coke by hand with the old-fashioned " duck bill." The plant of Messrs. Oliver Brothers and Phillips, the only one in operation until January, 1886, has not been available for any further experiments since those of Mr. R. W. Hunt, described in his paper on the subject, at the Chattanooga meeting. Continuous working has, however, led to important improvements in plant, and furnished valuable results in practice. The difference between the converter and plant of 1884, as illustrated in our Transactions, vol. xiii., p. 759 and following pages, and those of 1885, may be observed in Plates 1. and 11. accompanying this paper. Plate I. gives the elevation and plan, in half-section, of one of our latest 3-ton converters. Plate 11. gives a plan of the general arrangement of a plant adapted to turn out slabs, blooms, and billets for the general market. The letters on Plate I. refer to the following parts :

THIS paper presents, with the help of colored photomicrographs, the new method of mineral identification termed "selective iridescent filming." This method pertains to the field of determinative mineralogy, which it provides with tools for: (1) phase identification, (2) solid solution analysis. The method should be particularly useful in the applied fields of: (1) paragenesis of ore deposits, (2) mineral dressing, (3) mineral synthesis and study of phase equilibria.

Total crude fluorspar reserves in western Europe, containing more than 35 pct CaF*, are estimated at 12 million metric tons, while reserves in the USSR and Soviet sphere may exceed 5 million metric tons. The bulk of these reserves are concentrated in the USSR, Spain, United Kingdom, Western Germany, and Italy. Since published estimates of the tonnages of individual mines and explored deposits are not available for most countries in Europe, the estimates given in Table I for individual countries are necessarily approximate, as they have been compiled from various sources and modified and combined according to the author's judgment. The majority of fluorspar deposits in Europe belong to the late Paleozoic metallogenetic epochs and have been found within or along the borders of the Hercynian massifs. Deposits in the Central and Esterel massifs of France, those of Western and Eastern Germany, Sardinia, the Catalonian coastal range and the Sierra de 10s Santos in Spain, and those of Devonshire and Cornwall belong to the Hercynian metallogenetic epochs. The deposits in southern Norway and Sweden belong to the middle Paleozoic or later, those of northern England to the late Paleozoic or later, those of northern Spain and Greece to the late Mesozoic, and those of northern and probably central Italy and Switzerland to the early Tertiary. Fluorspar occurs typically in veins, lenses, and stringers, but also in bedded replacement deposits and pockets, and may be colorless to white, yellow, green, pink, brown, blue, or purple to almost black. Except for the colorless variety, the only kind which can be used for the optical industry, the color of the fluorspar does not affect its ultimate use,

In the hydrometallurgical circuit, many phase separation steps are usually necessary. Typical steps are pregnant liquor - leach residue separation by counter- current decantation or continuous vacuum filtration, clarification of liquids prior to precipitation, ion exchange or solvent extraction, dewatering of final product, etc. The paper discusses the more recent advances in these areas and considers general operating parameters and cost factors. In addition, emphasis is placed on future needs because of the growing importance and necessity of hydrometallurgical processing of minerals.

THE experiments described in this paper constitute the preliminary work of an investigation outlined to determine the combined effects of steam and temperature on the endurance properties of certain steels. Essentially of a fundamental nature, it was found necessary, in order to make the investigation comprehensive, to test materials treated to give a wide range of properties. The work reported deals chiefly with nickel steel with one series of tests including nitriding steel. Such a study involves numerous variables, and requires an endurance-testing machine of rather special design.

The oxygen-fuel oil burner lance is a very useful tool at the Monessen B.O.F. It increases the overall flexibility of the operation. An additional 15,000 to 20,000 ingot tons can be produced at a given hot metal supply. It helps overcome sporadic drops in hot metal thermal values and/or supply. It results in increased yield, in particular, on high carbon heats where much yield was lost on reblow triggered slag reactions. The burner has also been adopted as a standard tool to aid burning in new vessel linings. Overall, steelmaking performance has improved with the use of standard preheat practice. Scrap charges up to 50 percent have been used routinely in times of extreme hot metal shortages, but the performance is weak in some categories. Development of a single step oxy-oil process is in progress. In this process, scrap and hot metal are charged as in the normal B.O.F. practice, but fuel oil is fired with the refining oxygen.

The sand and gravel industry is the largest nonfuel mineral industry in the nation (Drake, 1972), Table 1. In 1970, the production of sand and gravel totaled 944 million tons valued at $1.1 billion. California, which leads the nation with more than 140 million tons, together with Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, and New York, account for 43 % of the total production in the nation. In commercial usage, "sand" applies to rock or mineral fragments ranging in size from particles retained on a No. 200 sieve (0.074 mm openings) to those passing a No, 4 sieve (4.76 mm openings). "Gravel" consists of rock or mineral fragments larger than 4.76 mm, ranging up to 3%-in. maximum size. The construction industry consumes 96% of the sand and gravel produced; the remainder is sand used for specialized products such as glass (see the chapter on "Silica and Silicon"). Utilization The building industry uses sand and gravel chiefly as aggregate in portland cement concrete, mortar, and plaster; the paving industry uses sand and gravel in both asphaltic mixtures and portland cement concrete. Aggregate is commonly designated as the inert fragmental material which is bound into a conglomerate mass by a cementing material such as portland cement, asphalt, or gypsum plaster.

Teamwork is the key to an efficient organization. Cooperation among mining staff members is an obligation owed to the company. The more cooperation the metallurgist receives from underground, the higher milling yield will be, which in turn makes for a greater mine profit. There is no pay for metal left in mill tailings. The metallurgist is not in a position to be of help to either the geologist or mining engineer, but can receive valuable assistance from both. Therefore, the metallurgist must win underground cooperation. The mining engineer is usually interested in geology because of its relation to ore control; in milling because that is where the rock goes. However, any overlapping of interest between geologist and metallurgist is quite remote.

INTRODUCTION The mines of western central Mexico historically contributed a profusion of gold and silver for the treasury of Spain and later provided sources for financing the Mexican War for Independence and the Mexican Revolution. The western coastal and barranca (cliff) tribes were hunters and extremely hostile, and the Spaniards were not able to penetrate many of the rich districts of their rugged homeland until the mid-1700's. This was more than 200 years after Cortez began the Inquisition by defeating the Aztecs and their allies in a decisive battle in the great city of Tenochtitlan (present day Mexico City). The Spaniards had a voracious appetite for silver and gold, and it was inevitable that they would finally subdue the natives and commence mining activities. Described in this paper are some of the precious metal mining activities in the southern half of the State of Sinaloa and the western half of the State of Durango (Figure l), and specifically those mining activities in the area controlled by the company with which the author was associated for 14 years, Minas de San Luis, S. Electrical methods and instruments for geophysical exploration have been almost exclusively applied, during these years of development of the art, by a few companies specializing in this field. The control of patents, the cost of the instruments and the general lack of published information on details of field procedure and office interpretation have given these owners a monopoly in carrying out electrical surveys. The development of the Megger Ground Tester1 seems likely to change this situation, and to enable mining engineers and geologists, without special training in geophysics, to carry out simple reconnaissance electrical surveys. Nevertheless, the need for such special training and experience in planning surveys and interpreting their results remains, and probably i always will remain, indispensable for a successful outcome. The unique thing about, the Megger Ground Tester, which gives rise to this hope for its general use, is its simplicity of operation. The four binding posts of the instrument are connected by insulated wires to four stakes driven into the ground at appropriate points. The crank of the Megger is then turned, and the resistance of the ground between the two inside stakes is read directly, in ohms, by the deflection of a pointer over a scale. The apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Fundamentally, the principle of operation is that of determining the resistance of a four-terminal conductor, as applied by Frank Wenner to the measurement of earth resistivity. "A four-terminal conductor is a conductor provided with two terminals to which current leads may be connected and two terminals to which potential leads may be connected. IN THE early period of steelmaking, ingot structure and segregation presented no difficult problems. Crucible melting required very small ingots which, if properly deoxidized, gave little segregation, and a small inserted hot top prevented pipe. As larger ingots were poured [ ] from Bessemer and open-hearth furnaces, segregation, piping, and gas evolution became increasingly important. The first studies of solidification were made by Gathmann (l) and the Brearley's (2) who used stearine to show the effects of shrinkage and mold shape. Figure 78 shows a series of stearine ingots at various stages of solidification. These studies indicated that the liquid solidifies at a nearly uniform rate, starting at the walls and bottom of the mold and progressing inward, and demonstrated the formation of secondary pipe in big-end-down molds. THE young metallurgist of today who thinks casually of the technical literature of the steel industry might conclude that little has been published concerning the Bessemer process. This conclusion is true as relating to the last decade or two, but there is a fairly voluminous Bessemer literature in the period of 1860 to 1910, Since that time, however, an entirely new level of metal-lurgical knowledge of steelmaking has been reached; and the present paper is simply an effort to look broadly from this new level and to bring the recorded history of the process up to date, It is an effort to appraise the acid Bessemer method of steelmaking in the light of today's technical knowledge thereof. In this paper matters of history will be dealt with only insofar as they contribute to an understanding of today's situation. Attention will be directed to the apparent causes of past developments in seeking to perceive the true direction of trends now in existence and effective as bearing upon future developments. The paper will discuss the economics of the Bessemer process, but only to the extent that will bear upon the metallurgist's understanding of his respon-sibility. The problem of the quality of Bes-semer steel will be reviewed and examples will be given of the technical data upon which the reasoning of the paper is based, Matters of engineering design, mechanical maintenance, operation and metallurgical investigation will be surveyed.
