The properties of the company lie within the Pachuca district, State of Hidalgo, Mexico, connected by three railway lines with Mexico City, 55 miles southwest, and by two lines with Vera Cruz, 250 miles southeast. The ores were formerly divided by sorting into two classes, smelting and milling, the former averaging about 2 oz. gold and 335 oz. silver, the latter 0.12 oz. gold and 23 oz. silver. The smelting ores were sold to custom plants, principally the American Smelting & Refining Co. at Aguascalientes. The milling ores were treated by the patio process at the Guadalupe Hacienda, at Pachuca. This patio was probably the largest in existence at the time and continued in active operation up to March, 1910. In January, 1910, the mines and patio were sold to English interests, represented by Camp Bird Limited. Two new companies were formed, the Compania de Santa Gertrudis, S. A., to operate the mines, and the Compania Beneficiadora de Pachuca, S. A., to build and operate a custom cyanide milling plant. (Pig. 1.) Geology The historical geology of the Pachuca district is described by Fred J. Pope as follows: 1. The most recent sedimentary rooks in the district belong to the Cretaceous period. 2. The Cretaceous rocks were penetrated by large intrusions of ande-site (referred to hereafter as primary andesite) which occur as elliptical dome-shaped masses, striking northwest-southeast. These andesite bodies are from 8 to 15 miles long and from 6 to 10 miles wide. 3. A period of erosion during which the contour of the andesite domes was changed. 4. Andesite flows (secondary andesite) which rest unconformably on the primary andesites.

INTRODUCTION The objective of this chapter is to inform the industry, as well as the public, of the challenges in dealing with problems associated with air and water contamination by coal preparation plants. The need for an informed industry is most important. It is hoped that some contribution may be given to a more efficient and economical approach to the problems of plant waste contaminants at individual plants. The problem has many facets, and consideration should be given to specific areas before any significant problems develop at a given plant. It is then possible to have a reasoned approach before the pressures of an emergency environment force hasty and incomplete solutions. It will be necessary to anticipate these problems in the design of new preparation plants, and advance consideration should be given to all problems concerned with contaminants.

THE characteristics of alloyed anodes and their influence on the products of electrolysis and power consumption have been noted previously in the literature.1 This paper presents data in continuation of the subject given in an earlier paper by the authors.2 As noted in the authors' previous paper, the objectives of this work are the reduction in the cell voltage and the purity of the cathode product resulting from the use of alloyed lead anodes. The fundamental facts developed in the previous paper were: (1) that the presence of a small amount of calcium lowers the anode potential approximately 50 per cent. below that of pure lead; and (2) that thallium when present to the extent of 4 per cent. rendered the anode practically stable, thereby lowering the contamination of the cathode by lead to a very insignificant amount. The specific features determined in this recent work are as follows: 1. The lowest limit of calcium in the lead which will still give maximum lowering of the anode potential. 2. The characteristics of the thallium-calcium-lead anode. 3. The characteristics of the silver-calcium-lead anode. 4. The characteristics of the thallium-silver-calcium-lead anode. It was determined that 0.1 per cent. calcium in the anode was sufficient to lower the anode potential approximately 50 per cent. Table 1 shows the characteristics of alloyed anodes tested. The anode composed of 0.1 per cent. calcium, 4 per cent. thallium, and 95.9 per cent.

During 1944, substantial gains were recorded in practically every phase of the petroleum industry in Oklahoma. With the spotlight of activity focused on other states during the more recent years, the production momentum that was achieved in Oklahoma through the discovery and development of such outstanding pools as Oklahoma City, Fitts. and major pools in the Seminole area during the late 1920's and early 1930's was practically spent by the end of 1943. However, with much of the industry's exploratory efforts greatly reduced in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky, the strong demand for Mid-Continent crude and the optimism created by some discoveries in the state toward the end of 1943, Oklahoma has again become the recipient of much activity and interest, with its 1944 drilling activity, production and refinery runs to stills registering substantial gains over the preceding year. Development and Exploration Since the discovery of the West Edmond pool in April of 1943, with the substquent drilling and development boom, the scene of exploratory activity has shifted from the central. south and east portions of the state to the general trend of the . Granite Ridge, where leasillg and wild-catting were greatly activated within a wide radius of this high subsurface feature. Leasing activity, however, jumped the confines of the Granite Ridge trend and extended into all of the northwestern counties in the state. Seismograph activity at once began following and keeping pace with this shift in the leasing and exploration locale, by the concentration of a large number of seismograph crews in the area. At one time during the year,35 crews were concentrated in Oklahoma, the majority being west of the Granite Ridge and extending into the northwestern counties. To illustrate the increase in geophysical work done in the state during the year, records indicate that 377 crew months were worked in 1944, which is a 21 per cent increase over the 311.5 crew months activated in 1943. With the discovery in 1943 of several encouraging prospects and the finding of West Edmond as an incentive, drilling operations increased some 54.3 per cent, for a total of 1986 completions during the year. This is compared with a figure of 1287 for wells drilled in 1943, an increase of 699 wells. The industry, with a total of 1064 oil producers, enjoyed a success percentage of 53.6 per cent. Gas wells completed were 223, while 699 dry holes were drilled. In 1943, completions included 587 oil wells, 127 gas wells, and 573 dry holes. The number of oil producers completed during the Year was almost double the numher of wells in 1943. Of the total drilling wells completed in the state, 350, or 17.6 per cent, were wildcat operations—an increase of 5.1 per cent over the 194.3 total of 333. The wildcat success percentage was 13.4 per cent, 47 successful wells being completed for an average initial potential of 160 bbl. This paper presents geological data regarding deposits of over 7,500,000 tons of fine-grained sulphide ore in barite gangue. A series of pyroclastics and arkoses was intruded by sills of quartz porphyry in connection with batholithic intrusions of granite 3 miles from Buchans. Gentle folding, with fracturing and shearing of tuff beds and intruded quartz porphyry, accompanied and followed the intrusion of granite and porphyry. The sulphide-barite mineralization is localized primarily in fractured and sheared tuff beds, but also in the sheared quartz porphyry. Two structures have proved particularly favorable for mineralization—one, the center of an anticline; the other, a series of weak, incompetent tuff beds intruded by thin sills of quartz porphyry and located between strong beds of arkose. During the folding the weak tuff with intruded quartz porphyry was intensely sheared and contorted and subsequently mineralized by sulphides and barite. Introduction Buchans is 5 miles north of Red Indian Lake, in Central Newfoundland, at an elevation of 900 ft. above sea level and 400 ft. above Red Indian Lake, and is reached by a 37-mile private railway from Miller-town Junction. The first ore body found at Buchans was discovered some 30 years ago in the bed of Buchans River, by Matty Mitchell, an Indian woodsman employed by the Anglo-Newfoundland Development Co. Ltd. In the years following the discovery the ore was developed by shaft-sinking and drifting, with results indicating a lenticular ore body in a shear zone, containing about 100,000 tons of extremely fine-grained sulphide ore in barite gangue averaging about 0.05 oz. Au, 4 oz. Ag, 1.5 per cent Cu, 10 per cent Pb, 18 per cent Zn. Because a profitable metallurgical treatment for the ore was not found, the mine was closed down in 1911. In 1915, Mr. H. A. Guess, Vice President of the American Smelting & Refining Co., learned of the Buchans River ore body, and after metallurgical tests had been carried on from time to time in his company's testing plant a satisfactory separation of the sulphides by selective flotation was finally effected in 1925. As sphalerite is such a common constituent of many types of ore, the present investigation was undertaken to determine what its relations are to the other minerals in the deposits, and also whether these are of any genetic significance. The data presented herewith were obtained from a mineralographic study of about 200 ore specimens from some 43 different localities, represented by suites of specimens in the Cornell University collection. Although so common and well known a metal, tin is really a less abundant element than many of those less familiar and usually ranked with the scarce or rare elements, such as cerium, yttrium, lithium, beryllium, titanium, zirconium and vanadium. The color of tin is white, with a slightly bluish tinge. When it is compared with nickel, the latter metal is brown. When placed alongside of tin, chromium is definitely blue. Tin is whiter than silver or zinc. Exceedingly thin films of tin show various shades of brown by transmitted light. The metal has a brilliant luster, and when mirror-polished, has high light reflectivity. The luster depends to a large extent upon the pouring temperature at which the metal is cast. If the temperature be too high, iridescent colors may show on the surface. These are the result of oxide film formation. If the pouring temperature be too low, the surface is dull. Small amounts of foreign metals, such as lead, arsenic, antimony and iron, decrease the luster of tin and impart a yellowish tinge to the metal. The structure is decidedly crystalline. The cast metal is a mass of crystals. When a bar of tin is bent, it emits a characteristic creaking sound. This is called the "cry" of tin, resulting from the grinding of the crystals one against the other during the bending of the metal. Tin metal may lose its crystalline structure by cold working, but grain growth occurs rapidly under the influence of heat. Metal which has been cast at a low temperature may become amorphous as the result of mechanical work. If such material be heated to temperatures well below the melting point, say at 110° C. for a half hour or for a few minutes at 150" C. recrystallization occurs. If the surface of tinned plate, tin foil, or tin meta1 in cast form be etched with hydrochloric acid containing a little free chlorine, attack occurs at the intererystalline faces. The surface shows patterns resembling the frost flowers on window panes in winter. The etched appearance is called moire metallique. Fine dendritic surface crystals of tin may be obtained by casting the metal on a surface of polished steel. The first carbide phase that precipitates at 120°C from a iron containing about 0.02 wt pct, C was studied with the electron microscope. In both strained and unstrained material the carbide particles appeared to form on the dislocations in the iron, in agreement with the results of the kinetic study in part II. The structure of the carbide was tentatively identified as an expanded a-iron lattice (body-centered tetragonal) with about 0.7 wt pct C. This phase appeared to be metastable and apparently transformed into cementite or epsilon carbide when the iron was over-aged. WhEN a iron containing less than about 0.025 wt pct C is quenched from 700°C to room temperature the carbon is retained in solid solution and precipitates out slowly with time. The morphology and structure of the precipitating phase are still in doubt, two different carbide phases, epsilon carbide and cementite, have been identified, but there is considerable disagreement about the time and temperature at which they appear.1-4 Epsilon carbide seems to form at lower temperatures than cementite, although one group of investigators4 found only the latter phase over a wide range of aging temperatures. Usually these two phases have been identified after aging times much longer than needed to drain the carbon from supersaturated solution, at least for aging temperatures below 200oC. The precipitated carbides have been observed with the electron microscope,'-5 but again most results have come from samples aged much longer than necessary to reduce the carbon concentration in solution to a low value. In this study the carbide phases were observed in earlier stages of precipitation with the electron microscope, in order to learn more about the shape, size, and distribution of the carbide particles. Samples strained small amounts before aging, as well as unstrained samples, were studied, and the structure of the carbide phase was tentatively identified. EXPERIMENTAL "Ferrovac E" vacuum-melted iron, from which the wires for kinetic studies were also made (Refs. 6 and 7 and the following paper) was used for this work. An analysis of this material is given in Table I; it agrees well with the manufacturer's values. The number of inclusions in the iron was very small, as can be seen in the optical micrograph in the following paper. Pieces of iron about 1 mm thick and 5 to 10 mm in diam were used for all the studies except for those in which the sample was strained before aging; then the specimen was a rod 3 to 6 mm in diam and 20 cm long. The samples were held at about 700°C in wet hydrogen for at least an hour to remove residual carbon and nitrogen, after which they were heated to 950" (in the y region) and cooled to room temperature in the furnace. This treatment gave an average grain diam of more than 1 mm, so that the effect of grain boundaries on the precipitation process was negligible. The samples were carburized at 710°C for about 2 hr in hydrogen that had passed over toluene held at -30°C; then they were rapidly quenched into water. From chemical analysis this treatment gave a carbon concentration of from 0.012 to 0.016 wt pct, which is less than the solubility of carbon at this temperature. A physical law, governing the rupture of rock by confined explosive charge correspondent to current expressions for determining weight of charge to rupture rock burden, W, was developed in the form Q = cVw3 by two early investigators performing unique experiments with ice. The coefficient C, is found by trial blast. Recent physical tests conducted with rock, synthetic materials and ice to establish the validity of the theory on which it and other related formulae are based indicated: (a) that failure under hydrodynamic impact pressure is by tension rather than shear as was assumed; (b) that the fundamental law of mechanics, enabling the determination of Q = cvw3, modified to the form P = R x Sa x Wb is valid when low velocity explosives are used; (c) that rock breakage under the action of low velocity explosives is entirely due to explosion gas pressure, as was believed; (d) that under the action of high velocity explosive it is due to the joint effects of scabbing and gas pressure; and that further possible modification could make the above equation also applicable to these joint mechanisms. shape could be easily frozen and because large loads would not be required. They found: (a) that the not unfamiliar shearing equation for metals was applicable to ice where P = load in lb; S = periphery of pressure surface, in.; W = burden, in.; K = modulus of rupture by shear in lb per in.2; and (b) that "the form of cavity produced by the application of gradual pressure is similar to that obtained by blasting in rock under similar conditions of free face and pressure surface!" This similarity in crater shapes leads to the conclusion that rock would rupture by shear, as did ice, and its behavior under the force of a blast could be governed by such a relationship as P = S x W x K. Three important interrelated empirical expressions were derived and rock, charging and spacing coefficients C,, C, and e were established and substantiated by trial blasts. In checking the accuracy of the main assumptions, duplication of the ice tests, substituting rock, suggested that K is not constant and that P = K x W x S, though valid for ice, does not necessarily hold for homogeneous limestone.' Conclusions from this later work raised questions making continued investigation desirable because such conclusions do not destroy the practical value of the empirical equations or theory. Further study for the establishment of the relationship between load, burden and periphery of the pressure surface and possible application of these to the mechanism of rock blasting was undertaken by the authors of this paper. MECHANICAL TESTING - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Certain inconsistencies in the results of the aforementioned tests repeated on three types of limestone suggested these inconsistencies be attributed to rock inhomogeneity. A summary of the reservoir engineering and related geologic data on the Schuler field, Union County, Arkansas, is presented here in a manner intended to interest both technical and nontechnical readers. The Cotton Valley formation and the Reynolds oolite are oil-productive formations in the Schuler field, but the Jones sand pool, at a depth of 7500 ft., developed with 146 wells on zo-acre spacing, is the reservoir of principal interest. The Jones sand sandstone reservoir is an anticlinal trap typically gas-drive or depletion type in performance. The core analyses from 88 per cent of the wells drilled, together with drilling time and electric-log data, yield an accurate estimate of the "productive" sand thickness and its areal distribution over the pool. Accurate production statistics, monthly reservoir-pressure surveys, and bottom-hole sample analyses when correlated by the "material-balance equation" show unusually good agreement with that principle. Estimates of oil initially in place made by the material-balance method and the sand-volume method are in good agreement at 116 to rzo million barrels. The reservoir-pressure history of the pool reflects the reaction of a reservoir to production, proration and secondary-recovery practices. The cost of the extensive program of reservoir study in the Jones sand pool has been estimated, in order to emphasize the value derived from such an investment through better understanding of a reservoir's reaction to production practices. Unit operation of 140 of the 146 Jones sand wells made possible an effective unitized gas-injection pressure-maintenance program. Res-ervoir-pressure decline was arrested, natural flow was maintained, and pumping and lease equipment were conserved. An increased ultimate recovery of zo million barrels beyond the estimated 34 million barrels primary recovery is indicated at present. Extension of the Jones sand unit to include the undeveloped Cotton Valley formation will permit additional recovery of otherwise uneconomic reserves of oil through wells no longer required in the Jones sand operations. Introduction The Schuler field comprises approximately 4000 acres in and about sec. 18, T. 18 S., R. 17 W. in west central Union County, Arkansas. Three reservoirs are procluctive of oil and gas: the Cotton Valley formation, the Jones sand, and the Reynolds oolite section of the Smackover limestone. The Jones sand pool is the most important reservoir from an engineering viewpoint. It possesses the traditional and somewhat classic characteristics usually associated with an anticlinal trap. Development and operations have followed the dictates of advanced engineering practices. The pool has attracted attention because of the unusually detailed reservoir data obtained, its interesting production history, and the success of the unitized gas-injection pres-sure-maintenance operation now being carried out. It is a generally recognized fact that by repeated straining the fracture stress of any metal is reduced to a fraction of its value for static loading. The value of this fatigue strength depends upon numerous factors, such as the states of strain and stress, the limits of straining, and the number of repeated loadings or cycles The large volume of previous investigations on fatigue is concerned entirely with large numbers of cycles, say exceeding 10,000 and up to 500,000,000. However, the changes in fracture stress and fracture strain occurring after a small number of repeated loadings have attracted little attention. Apparently the only investigations of this type are those byLudwik4.5 who subjected steel, copper, and aluminum wire to repeated torsion. In each test the torque was varied between identical values in the two directions of twisting. Depending upon the magnitude of the moment, fracturing occurred after a number of cycles, up to 10,000. The results of Ludwik's tests will be discussed later Such torsion does not readily yield actual stress and strain values. Therefore a pre- liminary study was made of the effects of repeated direct stresses, that is, tension and compression stresses. Because such tests are considerably more tedious than torsion tests, only high stresses were used in the preliminary work, yielding definite changes in metal properties after a few cycles. It was found in these tests that strains could be controlled more readily than stresses in the investigated range of high stresses. This paper, consequently, deals with the effects of strains of equal magnitude but different signs. The metal was first prestrained in static tension by a certain amount then subjected to compression to yield the same amount of strain after unloading. This loading cycle was repeated up to a maximum of seven times. After various cycles, the stress-strain curves in tension were determined, up to fracturing. As material for these tests, the aluniinum alloy 24ST was selected because it exhibits a comparatively small amount of necking in the tension rest This alloy permitted, therefore rather accurate cont.rol at the high strains necessary to produce fatigue failures at less than seven cycles. The results of this invest~gation appear sufliciently interesting to extend the method of attack in various directions It is intended to study (11 the effects of cycles up to a tew thousands and (2) the effects of strains of different magnitude in tension and compression respectively 'The latter variable also includes a. a special case the effects of compressive strains.

To modern civilization the platinum metals are of inestimable value. Their distinctive properties, both physical and chemical, render them indispensable in an age in which the processes of the laboratory are becoming an essential part of the daily life of the world. Generally, their function, though vital to particular processes, is not spectacular, and so remains unknown to all except the operators. EARLY METHODS OF MANUFACTURE The properties of platinum were recognized as of prime importance for scientific work at. a very early date, probably between 1750 and 1760. The difficulty of making articles from it seemed almost insurmountable, because no means of attaining the temperature necessary to melt it were known at that time. It is true that solid platinum could be obtained by fusing the metal with a more volatile metal such as arsenic, which was subsequently driven off by baking, but such a method, at its best, would give only a very brittle product, which was totally unsuitable for the purposes for which it was intended. Little, if any, progress could be made until it was discovered that platinum sponge, heated to white heat and hammered in an iron or clay mold, would metallize and retain the shape of the mold. This was a process that could not be wholly satisfactory but from it developed the method of pressing the sponge in a mold and forging it at white heat into wire or sheet. At present a somewhat similar process must be used for fabricating articles of tungsten, molybdenum and other metals of high fusing point, as with these metals we face today the same problems that the scientists of the eighteenth century encountered with platinum, but possibly the next significant advance in the metallurgy of these metals will be the devising of means to melt and cast them.

A WIDE Variety of metallurgical defects in steel have commonly been attributed to the presence of excessive amounts of hydrogen. These defects include flakes in rails and forgings, cracks in welds, and blisters in enameled ware, They have been related to hydrogen largely by circumstantiat evidence because the proper sampling and analysis of steel for hydrogen has been known to be difficult and because no general agreement has existed with regard to the relative suitability and accuracy of available methods. The need for a direct approach to these problems has been widely recognized. This general situation has been well described in the publications of the British committee on the Heterogeneity of Steel Ingots,' and current approaches to the problem were reviewed in a recent symposium of the AIME.I2 The plans described by the present authors at that meeting have now matured satisfactorily and will form the basis of this paper. The principal object of this paper will be to describe the methods of sampling and analysis which have been developed and to illustrate the usefulness and limitations of these methods by citing their application to a specific problem, The first problem selected for investigation was the behavior of hydrogen in rail steel. This was chosen because the occurrence of shatter cracks in rails has received a great deal of study over a long period of time. The defect can be controlled by the expensive procedure of slow in However, it may be hoped that a better understanding of the factors influencing the hydrogen content of rails will lead to a more efficient control of this problem. Rails provide a good starting point for a more general study of hydrogen in steel because they provide a cross-section large enough to develop cracks, Yet small enough for convenient handling and sampling. Rails were also selected because they arc made from plain carbon steel and it was felt that the initial work should not be complicated by the effects introduced by alloying elements. The considerations which determined the original planning of this study should be reviewed. The inherently complex nature of most hydrogen problems requires that a large amount of data must be collected for any particular case. This in turn means that any analytical procedure should be as rapid and simple as possible. The same objective of speed is indicated by the fact that it may finally become desirable to use hydrogen analysis in process control. It is also known that hydrogen is highly fugitive and that any procedure which facilitat~s early analysis of the sample without prolonged or irregular storage has distinct advantages. The most important previously reported methods of analysis may be classified into three general groups: (I) Vacuum fusion, (2) Vacuum extraction (without melting), (3) Total combustion.

A GROWING uneasiness in the oil fields indicates that doubts are arising as to the efficiency of the present technical, economic and legal arrangements affecting production. Recent documents of the federal government, debates in state legislatures, editorials in the daily press and statements of oil company executives re-echo the notion that the present methods of producing oil satisfy neither the business man nor the public. Such intimations are of utmost importance, since oil is a vital clement in modern industry and dependence upon it increases as new uses develop. SECTION I-PRESENT SCHEME OF COMPETITIVE EXPLOITATION IS WASTEFUL The oil industry has convinced itself, for very good reasons, that the present scheme of competitive exploitation results in losses, both in terms of quantities of oil and in terms of profits. The story of these losses is familiar enough, and it is necessary only to distinguish and summarize briefly certain factors that are of importance to the following argument. Oil pools are exploited under a competitive economic system based on private ownership and contract; the hope of profits attracts capital and enterprise, and competition is supposed to serve as a regulative factor. Whether such a scheme of industrial organization works is partially dependent on the ability of the producer to withhold or produce is commodity as he sees fit, in accordance with the dictates of market demand.

In the routine examination of a wide variety of metal specimens it is sometimes necessary to have special methods of polishing in order to retain and reveal certain details in each specimen. Among such special cases is the retention of graphite in malleable and gray cast irons, the preservation of all types of nonmetallic inclusions in both hard and soft steels, obtaining a scratch-free surface with soft metals, and avoiding the usual relief effects with very hard specimens such as tool metals con-taining various carbide and nitride phases. It is the purpose of this paper to give an account of some of these special polishing methods in use at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories. The polishing procedures outlined have been found to give uniform results. It is obvious that only general rules and the most important working details can be given here. Following these rules, the polisher can obtain satisfactory results if he possesses the necessary patience and has a sincere desire to give as nearly perfect a finish as possible to his work.

ECONOMIC deposits of barite occur in Missouri in two main districts. The most important, the Southeastern or Washington County district, is in the southeastern part of the state, mostly in Washington County with a small extension into the northeastern part of St. Francois County. Roughly, it embraces nine townships or about 200,000 acres and accounts for from 80 to 90 per cent. of the state production. The Central district, in the central part of the state, includes most of Morgan and Miller counties, and parts of Camden, Benton, Moniteau and Cole counties. The area embraced is much larger than the Washington County district, but the deposits are more infrequent. The location and general area covered by the two districts is shown in Fig. 1. There is another small area in southern Franklin County but so far its production has been of small consequence. It might be considered as a northward extension of the Washington County field. An area in the central part of Hickory County has also produced a small amount. The outline of the districts as shown indicates the general area in which deposits have been found. The total area covered by deposits of barite is only a small part of this, as, in the Central district especially, there may be miles of supposedly barren areas between ore-bearing areas of an acre or two in extent. The date when barite was first mined in Missouri cannot be definitely stated, but the industry probably dates back to about 1860. The occurrence of barite was known long before this, as it was encountered in the lead mines in Washington County and mentioned by several earlier writers.' Missouri is reported as producing 8000 tons in 1882 so it is evident the industry was well under way in the seventies in order to have arrived at this substantial production. By 1893 Missouri production had increased so that it ranked with that of Virginia, then the largest producer. It increased until in 1914 Missouri accounted for about 65 per cent. of the total United States output. The Climax design is for the human being and his needs. Climax President Arthur Bunker has likened the high mountain operation to a giant, 250 million tons in weight, and 12 thousand feet high. No matter how huge or complicated the plant, the design must assure efficient operation by its human operators. By the same token, living and playing facilities must be designed for fullest satisfaction in use-else the capital investment is not justified. Even the product, molybdenum, finds its application through the ever growing demands of a highly industrialized society of humans. Research in Climax Laboratories, in tune with our technical age, helps guide molybdenum to its maximum use for society.

IN previous discussions on stresses in hoisting ropes, little has "been said concerning the effect of the elasticity of the rope itself on the stresses due to acceleration. Laschinger1 has calculated acceleration stresses. for several cases but he has ignored the elasticity of the rope as a factor, except as it compresses the drum and stretches itself as it winds thereon. He also deals with steam plants and he shows the effect of the "jerky" start of the engine. This effect would actually be reduced by the elasticity of the cable. With the advent of the motor-driven hoist, new conditions have arisen. The jerk mentioned by Laschinger has been eliminated and smoother starting made possible. But the elastic properties of the rope seem to introduce considerable periodic acceleration stresses in the rope. The following discussion of acceleration stresses is based on the assumption of a constant acceleration at the drum. To be exact, the mathematical work is based upon the assumption that the top is moving upward with a constant acceleration, and ignores the fact that the cable is shortening as it winds. However, the effect of the shortening would be inconsiderable during the first part of the acceleration period. Most hoisting engineers make the assumption of constant acceleration at the drum. Under the older method of calculating acceleration stresses, this would be true with a constant torque motor. But if stresses vary, as this paper attempts to show that they do, constant torque would not give constant acceleration, although the velocity-time curves obtained in the full size test herein described showed that they approach rather closely to this condition, at least as nearly as could be measured.

CUBA fancies herself the "pearl of the Antilles" and, by many, Jamaica is called "blessed." But far to the southward lies what is seemingly the Caribbean's most glittering jewel, the sparsely-settled, Spanish-speaking United States of Venezuela, indeed blessed by nature to a lavish degree. Not a large country, Venezuela is leaping from the donkey to the airplane under the impact of its natural wonders. Angel Falls, dwarfing Niagara and seldom seen by man, is hidden in the cold, primitive and unexplored Guiana highlands along the southeast border. A few hundred miles northwest are the low and torrid coastal plains from which gush unlimited black-gold streams of oil. About midway are the Llanos-low-lying, savanna-type grasslands, beneath which large deposits of bauxite are as yet barely touched by the explorer's diamond drill. And jutting starkly upward 2000 ft from a surrounding expanse of savanna is a small mountain (see front cover), 11 miles long and 1 mile wide. It is, or was, La Parida.

THE refining period of an open-hearth heat blends imperceptibly into the finishing period, during which final adjustments are made in slag composition, in bath action and temperature, and in composition of the steel, in order to prepare it for casting into ingots. Operations must be governed by the consideration that alterations in the character of the heat during the finishing period must be held to a minimum. In a broad sense, the finishing and deoxidation period of a heat may be said to begin when the action of the last ore addition has ceased, and to end when the teeming of the ingots is completed. INGOT STRUCTURES A survey of the relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of ingot structure is required because deoxidation treatments during the finishing period control the amount of gas evolved during solidification and consequently determine the type of ingot structure. Four classes of ingots are recognized, depending upon the degree of deoxidation to which the steel has been subjected. These types are killed, semikilled, capped, and rimmed; typical examples of their structures are represented by ingots 1, 2, 5, and 7, respectively, of Fig 9-1. The actual ingots from which these cross sections were sketched were all poured to the same height (indicated by the dotted lines) in the same type and size of bottle-top molds. The eight drawings of the figure represent selected types of ingot structure in a continuous series from "dead killed" to "wild," resulting from variations in the total quantity of gas evolved, from none at all to copious amounts, during solidification of the steel in the mold. Killed and semikilled steels are adjacent at the "quiescent" end of the ingot structure series where only small amounts of gas are evolved.
