No precise geographic limits can be given for the zinc- and lead-region of North Arkansas. In general terms it lies N. of the Boston mountains and W. of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern railway; but the prospecting and the development of the ore-deposits have not gone far enough to outline more than vaguely the areas over which workable deposits are to be expected. The tardiness of the development of the region is due in part to its topography, as a hilly and partly mountainous country, through which there have been no railways until recently. There is no longer any doubt, however, about the existence in that region of large bodies of zinc-ores. I. General Geology. The general geology of the region is, in the main, quite simple, but that of the ore-deposits is less so. The zinc-regions of North Arkansas lie about the southern flanks of the Ozark dome. The rocks are approximately horizontal, but have a gentle southward dip away from the axis of this dome. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show the broad features of the to-. pography and geologic structure. South of the zinc-region, the sandstones and shales of the lower Coal-Measures form the north-facing escarpment of the Boston mountains. Beneath the Coal-Measure rocks are the limestones and cherts of the Lower Carboniferous; and these rest upon Silurian and Ordovician beds. The uppermost beds (Coal-Measures) have been cut into by erosion along the mountain-slopes so that their edges or outcrops have a meandering or dendritic form. The same thing happens with the Lower Carboniferous beds; but these, haying been more or less protected by the overlying Coal-Measured, have broader bases, and cover a much larger area. In places,

The reduction of chromous oxide from lime silica alumina slags by carbon-saturated iron behaves as a first-order process having a rate of 0.001 grams Cr min 1 cm 2 (pct Cr ) , substantially independent of slag composition and temperature over an important range for iron smelting. THE binary system lead-antimony has been the subject of compre-hensive investigations in these laboratories by Dean1 and his associates. The effect of a third constituent on this system, particularly on the lead-rich alloys in which dispersion hardening ,was found, has a commercial value as well as an academic interest. This paper covers the effect of the addition of copper, bismuth and tin, all of which are likely to be found in commercial lead-antimony alloys, and is divided into three parts, as follows: I. The System Lead-Antimony-Copper II. The System Lead-Antimony-Bismuth III. The Lead Corner of the System Lead-Antimony-Tin These three systems are of three different types, and hence may be considered as covering three general kinds of additions. Bismuth forms no compounds with either lead or antimony and forms solid solutions with both. Copper forms several compounds with antimony as well as solid solutions but with lead it forms a two liquid layer system and no appreciable solid solution. Tin is soluble in both lead and antimony in the solid state and also forms a compound with antimony. The effect of small amounts of bismuth on the lead-antimony alloys is small, having no appreciable effect on the solubility of antimony. The temperature of the solidus floor is lowered appreciably by the presence of bismuth, cutting down the range of heat treatment. Copper, on the other hand, due to compound formation, increases the apparent solubility of antimony. The excess antimony is tied up with the copper finally and so is not available for dispersion hardening. Cold-working is generally considered as a process of hardening metals. Diamet-rically opposite statements concerning the applicability of the scratch-hardness method in the testing of cold-worked metals, particularly after severe deformation, which exist in the technical literature led to the study of the results which are summarized in this paper. A series of metals, of which copper, iron and tin are used as illustrations here, were cold rolled to a definite degree without any intermediate annealing and the hardness determined by both the scratch and Brinell methods. The results indicate that the metal hardens rapidly during the initial stages of deformation; however, after a certain stage, which corresponds to a rather definite microstructure, the metal becomes softer and in its final form may be softer than the metal in its initial stage. As part of the study of the scratch-hardness method for metals and alloys in cooperation with one of the technical committees of the American Society for Testing Materials, the authors devoted considerable time to the study of the changes in hardness of metals when cold rolled. Various seemingly contradictory statements in the technical literature concerning the applicability of the scratch-hardness method to such cold-rolled materials were among the principal reasons for the investigation, the results of which are in part presented here. The effect of cold deformation, at least in moderate degrees, on the hardness as measured by the Brinell and other common methods is so well known that further reference is unnecessary. Concerning the scratch hardness of cold-worked metals, Martens and Heyn state' that hardness, whether measured by the ball-pressure method (Kugeldruck) or by the scratch method (Ritzverfahren), will be increased by cold deformation. THE theory of gravitation is based on Newton's law that any two bodies exert a mutual attraction which is proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them; i. e., A = K MM/R2 (1) where K is a constant, M and m are the respective masses of the two bodies, and R the distance between them. In the earth's gravitational system, the earth is one of the bodies; the other may be any body within or without the earth. In theoretical discussions and calculations in regard to gravity, that other body usually is taken as a unit of mass: in the C. G. S. system, a body of one gram in mass. GRAVITY AND LEVEL SURFACES Gravity is defined in geophysics as the force of attraction exerted by the earth, towards itself, on a body of unit mass. The intensity of gravity is usually expressed in dynes of force or in centimeters of acceleration. In geophysical work in America; most commonly it is expressed in dynes (per gram) with the "per gram" understood and not directly expressed. In geophysical work in Europe, most commonly it is expressed in centimeters per second per second (cm./sec.2) and less commonly merely as centimeter-gram-second units (C. G. S.). At sea level, the intensity of gravity amounts very nearly to 980 dynes. The vertical is the direction along which the attraction of gravity is exerted at any point. In most cases, it is very nearly, but not quite, perpendicular to the earth's surface. The path that would be taken by a body falling freely through space toward the earth is vertical at each point and may be spoken of also as "the vertical," or as the line of the vertical, or as a line of force of gravity. At the earth's surface it commonly is very nearly, but not quite, a straight line.

Systematic data are presented on the relation of composition of nickel silvers to color, tarnish resistance, hardness and liquidus temperatures, for alloys containing up to 30 per cent nickel and 50 per cent zinc, further modified at certain nickel and zinc contents by 0 to 8 per cent of tin and 0 to 10 per cent of lead. Attention has also been directed, using a still more limited range of alloys, toward a study of tensile properties and such casting properties and characteristics as fluidity, shrinkage and pressure tightness. In some of these, rather broad ranges of composition are dealt with; in others, it has been expedient to focus attention on the Federal Specification 20 per cent nickel silver casting alloy, WWP-541. Introduction The demand for an alloy essentially white in color, which could be cast and worked by simple methods and which possessed strength and corrosion-resisting properties superior to the usual brasses, led to the discovery and early use of cupronickel alloys containing zinc, and sometimes tin, lead and other metals. This type of alloy was generally known as 'German silver until the war, when the term "Nickel Silver" became generally accepted. The element principally responsible for the white color of the alloy and for its strength and corrosion resistance is nickel, which may constitute from 8 to 30 per cent of the alloy. The functions of the other elements will be described later. The manifold uses of nickel silver are largely due to its color, corrosion resistance, ease of casting, fabrication, joining and rather moderate cost. In many instances the alloy is finished by grinding and polishing while in others it may be finished with a silver or nickel plus chromium plate. Electroplates applied to a nickel silver base behave more satisfactorily than those applied to the softer and less resistant alloys, and owing to the white color of the underlying metal the article will retain a pleasing appearance despite local failures of the plating.

Two papers have been written previously concerning operations at the Montreal East plant of Canadian Copper Refiners Limited. The first one,' written in 1932, described silver-refinery operations at the time for producing silver and gold bullion from tankhouse anode slimes; the second,2 published in 1933, consisted of a description of the entire plant. Since publication of these papers the refinery has become the world's largest producer of refined selenium. The first selenium was produced in August 1934. Tellurium production on a commercial scale followed in October 1935. This paper will deal with selenium and tellurium production and also with present operations in the silver refinery. Blister cakes from Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Flin Flon, Manitoba, and commercial anodes from Noranda Mines Limited, Noranda, Quebec, are refined at Montreal East. Both these bullions have unusually high gold, selenium and tellurium content. The average assay of raw slimes produced from domestic and Noranda anodes is about 40 per cent Cu, 3600 oz. per ton Ag, 800 oz. per ton Au, 22 per cent Se and 3.7 per cent Te. Early Silver-refinery Operations From the start of operations in 1931 until July 1934, the raw slimes were oxidize-roasted at 700" I?. in a Nichols-Herreshoff furnace, acid-leached with tankhouse discarded foul electrolyte (20 per cent H²SO), filtered and charged directly to the doré furnace for refining to doré meta1. This is the customary method for treating tankhouse anode slimes but was not suitable at the Montreal East plant because of the high selenium and tellurium content of our slimes. In the acid-leaching process about 50 per cent of the selenium and tellurium in the roasted slimes was dissolved in the electrolyte. In selecting the subject, "Acceleration of the Rate of Corrosion by High Constant Stresses,'' for the 1940 Institute of Metals Division Lecture, I have been influenced by its highly theoretical and speculative nature as well as by the great practical importance of the correct interpretation and appraisal of the engineering significance of the phenomenon. I lay no claim to originality in talking on this topic, since it has been the subject of discussion for over a quarter of a century. However, as our technical thinking advances, old phenomena take on new and more significant aspects. In our studies at the Aluminum Research Laboratories, we have encountered many perplexing and seemingly contradictory results and have been fascinated by the problem of dovetailing all of the many pieces of information to make a complete picture. I hope that in the brief period of this lecture I may share with you some of the enjoyment we have had in attempting to meet this challenge to metallurgical science. The emphasis generally has been placed on the spontaneous failure by cracking of a metal under the combined action of high stress and corrosion, hence the present-day use of the terms "stress corrosion" or "stress corrosion cracking." The older term "season cracking," applied more specifically to copper-base alloys, includes, by inference, the element of time. For the purpose of the discussion today I will use "stress corrosion" to cover broadly the effect of stress in accelerating the rate of corrosion of metals. To stay within the limits of allotted time the disrussiorl will cover the effect of high static stresses rather than repeated or dynamic stresses, which would take us into the related field of corrosion-fatigue. The subject is particularly appropriate for an Institute of Metals Division Lecture because much the same phenomenon has been observed in almost all metal systems. THE complicated nature of the property changes that accompany age-hardening has made it necessary to reconsider and to elaborate the simple dispersion theory.1 It has been apparent for some time that more direct information is needed concerning the atomic mechanism of precipitation from solid solution if the theory of age-hardening is to be developed past a purely qualitative stage.‡ Fortunately, in recent years information has been developed which allows us to trace in detail the lattice changes accompanying the process of precipitation from solid solution. This information relates chiefly to the sequence of the several stages of lattice alteration by which the matrix lattice is transformed to the equilibrium precipitate lattice, and permits reasonable inferences to be drawn concerning the states of internal strain that accompany these stages. This information is most complete for the solid solution of copper in aluminum. The equilibrium precipitate is the ?' phase," CuA12." This forms in plates, parallel to the {100} matrix planes. The atom pattern and atom spacing on the plane in ?' lying parallel to this plane are roughly similar to those opposite it in the matrix.' The formation of ?', however, is preceded by the formation of a transition lattice ?', which again lies parallel to the matrix {100} plane, but in this case the matching of atom pattern and spacing across the matrix-precipitate interface is nearly perfect; thus there is lattice coherency across the interface and the interface is a plane of separation in only a very limited sense.4-8 Particles of ?' may be recognized microscopically and form a well-defined Widmanstätten figure.* The ?' lattice is recognized by the occurrence of diffraction lines on powder photograms or of spots on Laue photograms which may be analyzed in the usual ways to determine the lattice type and the lattice spacings. Very recent research 6.7,1 has shown, however, that streaks occur on the Laue photogram at an earlier point in time during the aging process. These streaks have been attributed to a preferential clustering of copper atoms into small platelike elements of only a few atoms in thickness and a few hundred atoms in diameter, probably of the composition of "CuA12," which may be designated as Guinier-Preston zones or aggregates.1 It is difficult if not impossible to determine the lattice type and lattice spacing in these aggregates. It is possible1 that these aggregates are in fact merely ?' in a high state of dispersion; the inclination to argue this is strong, as we shall see later. Never-

In recent print, some remarkably contradictory statements have appeared regarding the importance to be attached to sponge Iron,1-6 a metallurgical commodity whose history goes back at least to the time of Diodorus Siculus in the fourth century B.C. This disagreement, however, expresses the lack of a satisfactory method for producing sponge iron rather than defection in the commodity. The blast furnace is admitted to have certain inherent disadvantages, such as a general unsuitability for magnetite and the heating and blowing of vast quantities of undesirable nitrogen, so that a workable sponge-iron process remains attractive. In this respect, low-temperature gaseous reduction shows especial promise; but confusion persists regarding the factors involved. The present paper, therefore, has three principal divisions: (I) an exhaustive examination of all previous work on low-temperature gaseous reduction, (2) experi- mentation on the reduction of a magnetite with hydrogen, and (3) development of certain thermodynamic relationships in reduction, with a summarized depiction of the factors in the general process. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS Gaseous media used in the reduction processes under discussion can be classified in three types: (I) H2, (2) CO, and (3) other gases. In the second, the CO is often admixed with H2. The third principally comprises hydrogeniferous gases, such as natural gas and producer gas, and in addition includes chlorine. Because hydrogen therefore features in all three, a study of hydrogen reduction based on investigations using pure hydrogen alone may be incomplete. The present paper reviews the three groups of investigations in the listed order, paying particular attention to hydrogen reduction. For the benefit of future workers, an exhaustive bibliography has been prepared and similarly classified. Group I: Reduction with Hydrogen Equilibria Although the present problem is specifically one of kinetics, a first consideration is the equilibrium of the system, since the reactions to be studied comprise that equilibrium, and their direction and end points are defined by it. The historic development of these researches is interesting and informative.

Either (100) (001] or (110) (0011 oriented secondaries, or both, depending on annealing atmosphere and material composition, grew in a matrix of 2-dimensional grains. The growth dependence of secondaries of(hkl) orientation in the iron and 0.6 pct Si-Fe is explained in terms of surface energy driving forces and the dependence of these driving forces on both (hkl) orientation and amount of oxygen at the surace. (100) [001] grains grow when suflicient oxygen is present at the gas-metal interface to make y100 the lowest (hkl) surface energy. When little or no oxygen is present at the gas -metal interface, making Y110 the lowest surface energy, (110) (001 1 grains grow. When Y100 and y110 are approximately equal but lowest among (hkl) surface energies, both (100) (0011 and (110) (0011 grains grow simultaneously. An excess of surface oxygen produces complete grain growth inhibition in high-purity iron; i.e., a 3-dimensional grain structure is retained over long annealing periods. However, a small amount of silicon in the iron reduces the growth inhibiting tendency of oxygen without altering the (hkl) surface energy relationships. Some information on annealing twins is presented. SECONDARY recrystallization in high-purity a iron, cold rolled to strip a few mils thick, was reported recently.' The present paper provides additional information on this subject, also furnishes similar information on both zone-refined iron and a high-purity 0.6 pct Si-Fe alloy, and treats the more important surface phenomena that determine to a large extent whether one or more secondary recrystallization textures will appear during annealing. Previous studies on high-purity 3 pct Si-Fe2,3 have shown the importance of (hkl) and impurity-atom dependent gas-metal surface energies on the formation of secondary recrystallization textures in high-purity material. For example, either (100) or (110) oriented grains may have the lowest surface energy depending on the amount of oxygen at the gas-metal interface, and hence the highest driving force for growth if other growth factors are the same. Another important phenomenon in high-purity material is stabilization of the matrix structure; neither impurities nor a strong matrix texture seem to be necessary when recrystallization and normal grain growth occur, developing a stable two-dimensional type grain structure. The average grain size in such a structure is usually between one and two times the specimen thickness. Consequently, most of the grains have grain boundaries terminating at exposed surfaces, and this results in gas-metal interfaces (or hkl surfaces) as well as

MANY of the factors influencing the creep behavior of ferrous alloys have been investigated and reported upon in the literature, including such variables as grain size, steelmaking practice, nature and stability of the microstructure, and the effect of alloying elements in steels. However, with respect to the latter, the microstructures involved are usually heterogeneous and as a result the effect of the addition is related to its effects on the various phases present in the microstructure. In the instances where this structure consists of ferrite and carbide, the behavior of the alloy addition will be related to its action in strengthening ferrite and in opposing temperature softening of ferrite as well as coalescence of carbide. The present paper is the third in a series comprising a comprehensive review of investigations on the properties of iron binary alloys. 1.2 Its purpose is to describe the results of isolating one microstructural phase, namely ferrite, and studying its creep characteristics in both the unalloyed and alloyed conditions. This should aid in establishing to a large degree the importance of ferrite in the creep behavior of steels consisting of the previously mentioned ferrite-carbide aggregate. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK In view of the fact that the present investigation deals only with the effects of silicon, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and cobalt, and to a certain extent with the effects of carbon, the review of previous literature will be confined to these elements. Practically no references were encountered dealing with the influence of these elements on the creep characteristics of the isolated phase. However, various contributions have dealt with the creep behavior of low-carbon steels alloyed with the elements under consideration. A particularly concise review in this respect is given by Bullens (Battelle)3 and much of this material has been drawn upon. The definite improvement in creep resistance and high-temperature strength conferred by molybdenum is well known. Published suggestions by the A.S.M.E.4 permit of an increase of some 2000 to 5000 lb. per sq. in. in permissible design loads over a temperature range from 650° to 1000°F. as a consequence of additions of 0.40 to o.60 per cent of this element in carbon steels of the order of o.25 to o.35 per cent carbon content. Babcock and Wilcox Tube Co.5 has published data showing the pronounced increase in stress necessary to cause one per cent creep per 10,000 hr. when additions of 0.5 or 1 per cent molybdenum are made to a plain carbon steel. These data apply to temperatures over a range from 800° to 1000°F.

THE widespread interest in the alloys of beryllium with copper is due principally to the fact that certain compositions show very favorable precipitation-hardening characteristics and are, in fact, the strongest nonferrous alloys known at the present time. Investigations have been conducted by Masing and Dahl and others on the physical characteristics of ternary beryllium alloys, in an attempt to produce precipitation-hardening effects with a smaller amount of beryllium than that required in the binary copper-beryllium alloys (2.0 to 2.5 per cent Be). The results of these investigations show that ternary alloys of beryllium with Cu-Sn, Cu-Al and Cu-Zn, among others, exhibit promising improvements in physical properties after precipitation-hardening treatment and, while the increases in properties obtained are not as high as those realized from the binary copper-beryllium alloys, excellent properties are: obtained with beryllium contents averaging about one-half the amount required in the binary alloys. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the equilibrium relations of certain alloys containing copper, tin and beryllium. The alpha-phase boundary of the ternary system is given for alloys containing from. 0 to 1 per cent beryllium. The equilibrium conditions beyond the alpha-phase boundary are presented for alloys containing up to 32 per cent tin and 1 per cent beryllium. The data were collected by means of

The average assay of raw slimes produced from domestic and Noranda anodes is about 40 per cent Cu, 3600 oz. per ton Ag, 800 oz. per ton Au, 22 per cent Se and 3.7 per cent Te. Early Silver-refinery Operations From the start of operations in 1931 until July 1934, the raw slimes were oxidize-roasted at 700" I?. in a Nichols-Herreshoff furnace, acid-leached with tankhouse discarded foul electrolyte (20 per cent H²SO), filtered and charged directly to the doré furnace for refining to doré meta1. This is the customary method for treating tankhouse anode slimes but was not suitable at the Montreal East plant because of the high selenium and tellurium content of our slimes. In the acid-leaching process about 50 per cent of the selenium and tellurium in the roasted slimes was dissolved in the electrolyte. HOTCHKISS, * Madison, Wis.-It was fortunate, in a way, that this subject of income taxation came up during the war when the government could appeal, on the basis of patriotism, to men of large, business experience to undertake the work of formulating this matter and practically donate their services. At any other time the government would have been unable to secure the necessary number of men of like ability. There is one thing that must not be forgotten. In all cases, except the very largest and most important, the application of this income tax law to a mine is going to be made by clerks whose salaries are fixed by a Congress that appropriated a half billion of dollars for a war purpose and provided that $4000 should be the highest salary paid in the adminis-tration of that great sum. The Congress of the United States unfor-tunately seems almost entirely unaware of the fact that men of ability and experience are worth money and must be paid adequately if proper public service is to be secured. While the formulation of the broad plans for administering the law have been in the hands of. men of unusual ability, we have the future to guard, and, if possible, the mining industry should see to it that the Internal Revenue Department is permitted by Congress to pay salaries that will enable it to secure men of the ability and experience necessary to insure proper consideration of the industry. Another fact to which I would call attention is the difference between the business and the economic, or economists', points of view as to what a mine is. The economists have properly, from their point of view, classed a mine as a wasting asset, but the average metal mine is not a wasting asset if it is a real mine. The economists are correct in a broad sense in that every ton of ore taken out diminishes the orebody by that amount. When it comes to the consideration of an individual mine from the business standpoint, the future of that mine rests on unfore-seeable events-the discovery of new orebodies or the development of old bodies beyond the point of probable expectations. Every going mine must develop new ore each year to replace that extracted, and, .during all but the last one or two years of its activity, actually does so. Instead of being a "wasting asset" such a mine, from the practical stand-point which must control valuation, is an "increasing asset." From

LAST year this Institute was good enough to accept some remarks by the writer regarding sound steel, entitled Plant for Hadfield Method of Producing Sound Steel Ingots, being a continuation of a research in which for some time the writer has been engaged, and full particulars of which were submitted in papers entitled A New Method of Revealing Segregation in Steel Ingots, and Method of Producing Sound Ingots, read before the Iron and Steel Institute in October, 1912. These papers gave rise to a very interesting discussion, both in England and America. This question is one of vital importance, as unless sound steel in the form of ingots is first obtained, sound steel in the finished forms of rail billets, rails, bars, sheets, and other forms cannot be expected. The working stresses demanded by modern conditions are so great, each year they probably approach nearer to the limit of safety, that without doubt those who produce steel will be compelled to pay the attention which this subject deserves. Moreover, the problem is not an insuperable one, as shown by the writer in the papers above referred to. In view of the information which has already been presented in these papers, it is not now necessary to go into details of the system advocated by the writer, except to repeat that the ingots and steel now referred to were produced by employing in the first place sound fluid steel, free from blowholes, this being poured into ordinary ingot molds, provided with the necessary feeding heads, the insulating slag medium, also charcoal and air blast or other suitable form of applying heat to the head portion of the ingot. Tile upper or head portion of the ingot is kept fluid by the intense heat generated by the air blast and charcoal, so that such fluid steel passes into the body of the ingot below the head, thus feeding and avoiding the shrinkage or piping which would otherwise occur. The result is the production of a sound steel ingot, free from blowholes, segregation and piping, and in which the waste portion, usually termed the discard, is but little over 7 or 8 per cent.

Soon after general use of stainless steels began, it was observed in practice that certain combinations of factors tended to induce corrosion by pitting. For most applications this was a serious drawback, not so much because the structural properties of the metal were impaired but because of the rapidity with which heavy sections of the alloys were penetrated by small elongated pits. These pits seemed to initiate readily in oxidizing metal salt solutions like ferric chloride and in chloride solu-tions like sea water. It was observed that in sea water pitting was more frequent in stagnant or polluted waters than in highly aerated, moving waters. The steels in these chloride solutions were observed to be sensi-tive to long contact with material such as sand grains or attached bar-nacles. At points of attachment or contact it was not uncommon to discover initiation of corrosion. Pits once begun at contact faces were observed to grow rapidly, usually elongating phenomenally in the direc-tion of gravity until the metal was perforated. Hydrochloric acid and other nonoxidizing acids, on the other hand, were observed to corrode stainless steels generally; the weight losses often were higher, but the penetration less than for the pitting type of corrosion. The causes of pitting, a type of corrosion recognized as character-istic not only of stainless steels but of many additional metals and alloys, are important in corrosion studies. A possible explanation bears prac-tical significance, for once it is known why pits begin where they do and continue to grow after initiation, intelligent direction can be given to diminishing corrosion. This can be done either by some alteration in the composition and treatment of the alloy or by some alteration in the environment. It appears foremost in importance to discover the nature of pit foci, for if initiation of pits can be discouraged their growth will be no longer a factor to be considered.
