SINCE 1950, when perhaps two or three cyclones were being tested in Arizona, the number in use has grown to about 100. Most of these have come into operation within the last two or three years, and according to information supplied by various mining companies, the number will continue to grow for several years more. In mills that have been recently constructed, cyclones dominate the fine classification field, removing grit from lime slurries, producing smelter flux, reducing concentrate thickener overloads, classifying molybdenite in grinding circuits, and conditioning flotation feed. Four major copper companies are now testing cyclones in primary grinding circuits, and one concentrator soon to begin operation will classify entirely with cyclones. In at least two instances these versatile machines have been given a vital role in the construction of tailings disposal systems.

INTRODUCTION The composition of water used in the flotation process has always been of primary interest to the flotation metallurgist. It is by alteration of the chemistry of the water introduced to the process that flotation separation is effected. In only a few cases has it been necessary to treat available water prior to use in the process. In the past, flotation tailings were treated for the removal of solids via the tailings dam and water decanted from the dam was either recirculated to the process or discharged to the surface water system. The choice of recirculation or discharge was based upon water availability, effect of recycle water on the process, and economic considerations. The Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 have charged the United States Environmental Protection Agency with establishing effluent limitations from point sources of discharge into the navigable water of the United States. A detailed study, sponsored by EPA, of the water of ore processing plants took place in 1974 and 1975 and guidelines for these plants will presumably have been published by the time this paper has been presented(1). The action of many of the individual states preceded the EPA in this attempt to regulate the quality of the water discharged from industrial point sources. Even with recycle of tailings water, some water is discharged from tailings dams into the substrata and at least one state is currently preparing guidelines for the quality of water discharged into the substrata.

In considering the magnificent success of Mr. Gayley's bold experiment of applying dry blast to the blast-furnace, whereby a saving of 20 per cent. of fuel per ton of iron is effected, the question arises whether still further economy in fuel is possible, and, if so, how it is to be attained. The manner in which the heat generated in the furnace is utilized in the production of pig-iron may be determined, by the method of Bell and Gruner, for any furnace for which the necessary data are obtainable ; and the study of the operation, under various conditions, of a number of furnaces, for which such information has been worked out, should enable us to form some conclusion on the subject. The tables and calculations here given cover the operations of several furnaces reported in our Transactions ; also the two furnaces using natural and dry blast ill Mr. Gayley's experiment, for which the heat-equation has been worked out by Prof. Joseph W. Richards in his admirable discussion ' of Mr. Gayley's paper, The Application of Dry Air Blast to the Manufacture of Iron, and, finally, various hypothetical furnaces. The full list is as follows : A. Isabella furnace, with natural blast. B. Isabella furnace, with dry blast. The data stated for A and B in Table 111. are those given by Professor Richards, except that the heat-units are given for one unit of iron instead of 100 units, and some items of heat supplied, as stated by Richards, have been subdivided, the total being the same as given by Richards. The system W-Hf was determined by use of metal -lographic and X-ray methods. The only interrnetal-lie phase W2Hf melts peritectically at 2650° ± 50°C. A eutectic between W2Hf and ß-Hf solid solution exists at 78 at. pct Hf arul 1930º ± 10°C. The addition of tungsten loulers the hafnium transfornzation; there is a eutectoid at 93 at. pct Hf and 1560°C. The solubility limits of the terminal solid solutions were determined. At the beginning of this investigation, the system had not been elaborated; only crystallographic work had been done to determine the structure of the occurring intermetallic compound W2Hf, and a certain analogy to the system W-Zr was to be expected. Special emphasis was placed in this program on the Hf-rich part of the diagram. Following the completion of our experiments, a phase diagram was suggested by Braun and RUdY.1 EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The investigation utilized tungsten powder supplied by the General Electric Co. with a purity of about 99.9 pct and hafnium crystal bar of about 97.7 pct purity, 2.3 pct Zr, supplied by Foote Mineral Co. Typical analyses are given in Table I. The procedures followed were identical with the ones described for the Re-Nb diagram.' Tungsten powder was compacted at 16,000 psi and the necessary amount of hafnium was added in the form of small pieces cut from the crystal bar, with a reasonable excess of tungsten powder to make up for powder losses on melting. High hafnium or tungsten melts were prepared from premelted tungsten and hafnium or by employing master alloys. The melting was done in a Heraeus arc-furnace under argon. Melting and remelting up to 8 times resulted in fairly homogeneous alloys. No weight

Similarities are noted in the practices and problems of constructing dams to impound mine tailings, fly ash, and chemical wastes. The comparison of a typical tailings dam with a conventional water-retaining earth dam shows that the former is inherently less stable and can be susceptible to cracking, liquefaction, erosion, and frost action, as illustrated by examples. Several methods are presented for building safe tailings dams using either the coarse fraction of the tailings or local soils, the important factor in each method being proper compaction of the material. The safety of existing tailings dams can be improved by flattening the overall slope, preferably by adding berms, or by decreasing the height. Where neither remedy is possible, the installation of electro-osmotic tie-backs is suggested. Dumps of mine spoil can be stabilized economically by compacting the material in layers along the toe to form a dam.

THE application of aviation to mining and petroleum operations, on the basis of economy and attainment, has become a demonstrated fact. According to Dominion Government records, 30 Canadian companies engaged in air transportation with northland mining camps, carried 13,000 tons of freight in 1935, and in 1936 carried 16,000 tons. In addition, many mining companies used planes to transport prospectors with canoes, outboard motors, gasoline drums and supplies to remote locations, and one company maintained a plane to take radium-bearing ore from its mine on Great Bear Lake nearly 1000 miles south to the rail-way at Waterways, Alberta. Heavy pieces of mining machinery weighing 2 tons are being carried by Ford trimotor planes over the Andes, at an altitude of not less than 15,000 feet. At Bulolo, New Guinea, 17,500 tons of disassembled gold-dredging equipment has been flown over inaccessible terrain, while supplies and building materials for a community of 1000 whites have been transported by airplane. A 31 z-ton shaft was carried on one notable trip, while at another time an automobile, 2 tons of rice and a large safe went over the mountains in one plane. Fig. 1 shows an electric generator that was carried by plane to Bulolo. Many large American oil companies operated fleets of planes during 1936, ranging from fast, luxurious air liners for executives to elaborate geological prospecting units, ambulance planes, freight carriers and pipe-line repair crews.

It has also appeared that the behavior of the zinc cell is the best and surest check on the correctness and thoroughness of the purification methods used, because it indicates the presence of both current impurities and cumulative impurities derived from the leaching of the ore; it also indicates whether these impurities are current or cumulative, at least in so far as they are of serious importance commercially.

In this paper it is impossible to more than touch on many of the commercial alloys of iron, chromium, and carbon, therefore the discussion is confined to the properties of some of the less well-known alloys with upwards of 20-per cent. chromium. The discussion has been based largely on the strictly engineering aspects of the alloys. Chromium has well-defined effects when added to the iron-carbon system. These effects depend on the amount of chromium added and on the composition of the iron-carbon alloy to which the addition is made, i.e. whether low- or high-carbon steel, cast iron, etc. In the case of the low-carbon steels, the chromium addition, when not in excess of several per cent., appears to exert an influence on the properties by its influence on the critical range. In the higher chromium alloys, the physical properties are influenced chiefly by the formation of new complexes, such as iron-chromium solid solutions and, with higher carbon contents, iron-chromium carbides of great hardness. Examination of the published data1 on the critical range phenomena of chromium-bearing steels up to several per cent. chromium indicates an agreement on the following points:

Nonferrous alloys upon which desirable properties can be conferred by heat treatment are becoming of increasing industrial importance. The alloys of copper with a constituent which has a solubility varying with temperature are materials of this character. Some of the constituents which are effective in producing a change in the mechanical properties of these alloys upon heat treatment are, according to Corson,' nickel and silicon, iron and silicon, cobalt and silicon, and chromium and silicon. In addition to these elements, Gregg2 states that the combination of beryllium and silicon is effective in producing age-hardening characteristics in copper. The effect of these elements, however, as dispersion-hardening constituents in the copper alpha solid solutions does not seem to have been studied in any considerable detail. This paper deals with the heat treatment and properties of three alpha brasses containing 3 per cent. of nickel plus silicon in the proportion necessary to form the compound nickel silicide, Ni2Si. Some information of a preliminary nature in regard to the hardening by heat treatment of phosphor bronze containing the same percentages of nickel and silicon is included. The method of hardening the alloys, which is effective in increasing the tensile strength and proportional limit, is similar to that used in the case of duralumin type aluminum alloys. It consists of a quench from a temperature at which the hardening constituent is in solid solution, followed by an aging at a lower temperature to precipitate the dissolved constituent in a dispersed condition. This results in an increased resistance of the alloy to deformation with an attendant improvement in the tensile properties.

INTRODUCTION THE Bureau of Mines is investigating the problem of slag viscosity, its variation with the temperature and with the composition of the slag, and its effect upon the distribution of the sulphur between molten iron and slag, as introductory to a series of contributions to the theory of the metallurgical processes. The method of measurement, viscosity, apparatus, furnace and other accessories mentioned in this paper have been described fully in a Bureau of Mines report.1 THE LITERATURE ON SLAG VISCOSITY The viscosity of blast-furnace slag had not been measured previous to the investigation described in this report. A number of investigators have determined the "fusibility," or softening temperature, of slags by means of the cone method or, other deformation method, but these methods supply only limited information regarding the temperature-viscosity relations.-of the slag in question. Any deformation method that may be employed indicates only the temperature at which the slag attains a more or less definite viscosity, the magnitude of the value obtained depending on the method used. For details of the various methods used by different investigators, see, the Bureau of Mines paper already referred to. An isolated measurement by Doelter on a single mixture at 1,300° C. represents the highest temperature reached in the various viscosity investigations previous to those described in this report, in which results have been referred to absolute units. Arbitrary deformation tests have of course been made at much higher temperatures.

In the last few years, there have been developed at the plant of the Nichols Copper Co., Laurel Hill, 'Borough of Queens, New York City, improvements in electrolytic copper refining by the series system that have materially increased the flexibility and economy of that system. The purpose of this paper is to discuss, as of interest to refiners and to those who have copper to refine, as well as to the engineering profession in general, the changes' that have taken place resulting in wider application and increased efficiency of the series system. Copper is electrolytically refined in two ways, which are spoken of as the "multiple system" and the "series system." In both systems, the electrolytic tanks are in series electrically.
