INTRODUCTION The trend in the coal industry for many years has been to make every- thing "bigger and faster." This also held true for loading and storage facilities. Where once a million ton per year mine was rare, three to five million ton per year mines are not uncommon today in the bituminous industry. This greatly increased production, made possible through mechanization, required greatly improved loading facilities just to get the coal away from the mine. Also, there is a trend toward combining production from more than one mine and cleaning it in a single preparation plant. In addition to increased loading capacity, this frequently necessitates raw coal storage and blending facilities. The development of the unit train with its attendant economics, more than any other factor, has contributed to the widespread construction of storage and high-speed loading facilities. In the export market, the construction of ever larger coal colliers has contributed to a need for faster and larger loading facilities. In this climate of rapidly changing technology, any written account is faced with the possibility of obsolescence before its appearance. Thus, this chapter seeks to define the common and current practice in coal loading and storage facilities with the full knowledge that this practice is an ever-moving target. FUNDAMENTALS OF COAL STORAGE Storage of coal is becoming an increasingly important part of coal handling systems at mines, particularly since the advent of the unit train concept in transportation. In order to take advantage of reduced transportation rates on trainload shipments of coal offered by unit train movement, operators have found that storage is an economic necessity. In unit train practice large predetermined quantities must be loaded in relatively short periods of time as opposed to conventional practice where coal is loaded at a speed dependent on the production capacity of the mine and/or the cleaning capacity of the preparation plant. Two surveys of storage practices at mines reveal several objectives for storage.1, 2 Raw and/or clean coal storage is generally practiced in order to accomplish one, or a combination, of the following objectives: 1. To improve plant efficiency by distributing plant feed over the entire operating time, or to allow a preparation rate different from the production rate. 2. To limit interruptions of supply, ie, allow mine and plant to function independently with delays in one not affecting the operation of the other.

The Institute of Metals Division Lecture in 1936, given by R. F. Mehl, on diffusion in solid metals1, was introduced with the statement that "the phenomena of diffusion are intimately related to many basic problems of the metallic state, but in addition to this the process of diffusion is of first importance practically." In view of the scope of that lecture, it does not seem necessary to review the importance, history or present status of diffusion problems. One aspect of the subject of diffusion that has received little attention became of some immediate importance in the course of a study on segregation. When a solid solution alloy freezes, the familiar mechanism of solidification requires that the first nuclei formed be low in solute concentration, with a resultant normal segregation or coring effect during freezing. Theoretically, musion of solute atoms during solidification should result in a homogeneous solid solution. Actually, of course, it is impossible in most binary alloys to obtain a cooling rate that will permit diffusion to eliminate coring in the freezing dendrites. For a given alloy, the extent of diffusion attained up to the point of final solidification will determine the degree of enrichment in solute atoms of the final liquid phase. The flow of this liquid into dendritic contraction channels and the solute concentration of the liquid seem to be the determining factors as to whether the final gross segregation is normal, inverse or absent. The purpose of the present study of diffusion was to determine to some extent the separate diffusion rates of copper and magnesium into pure aluminum with a view to clarifying previous results on segregation in these alloys; i.e., the fact that under similar freezing conditions aluminum-copper alloys segregate inversely and aluminum-magnesium alloys segregate normally. Of concomitant interest were the questions of the homogenization times required for segregated ingots or partially melted, i.e., "burnt," structures, and the solution heat-treatment times required for cast, hardenable aluminum-copper and aluminum-magnesium alloys, for worked and annealed structures, and so forth.

In order to understand more fully the actual state of copper lost in copper reverberatory slags, a systematic study on the various reactions between certain metallurgically important copper compounds and synthetic copper reverberatory slags was undertaken by the authors in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1942 to 1945.1 This paper, being only a part of the work completed, is published first because it furnishes the first experimental evidence of the formation of copper ferrite from reactions between cuprous oxide and copper reverberatory slags. Choice of Slag Composition The choice of the composition of the synthetic reverberatory slags to be used was much deliberated. Commercial copper reverberatory slags, neglecting minor constituents, avcrage :2,3 45 to 47 pct FeO; 38 to 42 pct SiO2; 5 to 6 pct CaO; 5 to 6 pct A12O3. Since the ternary system CaO-FeO-SiO2 has been much more thoroughly studied4 and is much simpler than the quaternary system CaO-FeO-SiO2-Al2O3, it was decided to use calcium oxide only instead of calcium oxide and alumina in the synthesis of the slags. Fortunately the composition of the average copper reverberatory slag with calcium oxide substituted for alumina lies in the region of the phase diagram clarified by the investigators. A survey of the phase diagram (Fig I) suggested two compositions: (I) the composition near the invariant point S, which is made up of 46 pct ferrous oxide, 37 pct silica and 17 pct calcium oxide; (2) the composition near the invariant point K with 45.5 pct ferrous oxide, 43 pct silica and 11.5 pct calcium oxide. Composition S has the advantage that the percentages of ferrous oxide and of silica almost exactly coincide with those of the average reverberatory slags, and that of the lowest melting point (1093º ± 3ºC) in the whole ternary system. The calcium oxide content, however, obviously is high. Since we have already substituted calcium oxide for alumina, and since calcium oxide is more basic than alumina, the fulfil- slag is decidedly too basic. Composition K has a slightly higher melting point (1150O + 3OC) and a higher silica content, but this is preferred because the slag is saturated with respect to tri-dymite and thus should not corrode siliceous refractories. Beads of metal frequently appear at the ends of cast-copper wire bars and on the sides of wedge cakes near the top. These are richer in cuprous-oxide than the rest of the casting. A micrographical study of these exudations has been made. 11 is suggested that the materical is forced through the surface while the copper is solidifying. If not eliminated in process of manufacture, it shows on the finished polished sheet copper in patches differing in color from the main body of the shad. Figures 1 to 4 show the copper exudations, at different magnifications, as they appear on the ends of cast wire bars, and on the sides, usually near the top, of wedge cakes. Sometimes the exudations are in fine "drops;" at other times, large masses of the material are found. Microscopic examination of the copper exudation indicates that it is high in oxide and of eutectic proportions. Because of the difficulty of securing a suitable sample, the protuberances have not been analyzed chemically; but the spectroscope shows no indication that there are any more metallic impurities present than in the balance of the copper. The lowest copper plus silver content of the coppers studied for this paper was 99.914 per cent.; the highest, 99.966 per cent.; so the oxygen content of the whole casting would be well under 0.07 per cent. Structure of Protuberances The segregation of oxide between grains in the interior of the cast bar, not far from the "set," is shown in Figs. 5 and 6. In general, the amount of cuprous oxide begins to increase at a point about 0.01 in. below the normal surface of the casting, i. e., the base of the drop; but it does not attain maximum concentration in the main body of the metal. Vertical sections, Figs. 7 to 12, show that there is a definite line of large cuprous-oxide globules at the base of the drops. The reactions that occur in the basic open-hearth process are complicated and are subject to many different factors such as temperature, slag composition and rate of boiling of the bath. It is difficult, therefore, to present an extended theoretical discussion of open-hearth operations without confusing the theory of the process with the application of the theory. This paper attempts to present some of the theory of the open-hearth process without mentioning theory at any point, simply giving some of the practical applications of results founded both on theory and practice and on experimental work both in small and large furnaces. It is hoped that an answer to a number of questions commonly asked by the open-hearth operator may be found in this paper. Discussion of the subject matter is taken up more or less in the order in which a heat ie worked, beginning with the oxidation of the scrap charged, sulfur absorption by the scrap, calcination of the limestone, and extending into the pig iron for the charge, the slags formed during the process, and some of the phenomena occurring in deoxidation of the steel and in its action in the molds. Oxidation of Scbap When scrap is charged into a furnace it immediately begins to oxidize, Oxidation is carried out by.three reactions: Fe + H20 + FeO + Hz (absorbs heat) (1) Fe + C02 + FeO + CO (absorbs heat) (2: Fe+ ½O2 + FeO (gives off heat) (3: The product of oxidation contains some Fe3O4, but FeO usually predominates on account of the iron present in close contact with the scale formed For a given type of scrap the amount of oxidation is controlled by thc fuel and by the excess air being carried in the furnace, the temperature 01 the furnace, and the length of time that the scrap is in contact with the furnace gases. In general, less oxidation occurs when the furnace is rur hot so that the scrap melts rapidly. Air has been cooled, heated, washed, humidified and dehumidified for many purposes and in many industries. At a number of metal mines air is conditioned to reduce the high humidity and unbearable heat found in deep workings, and at some mines air is washed to allay siliceous dust. Steam is introduced into the intake air at many coal mines, particularly in winter, for the purpose of keeping loose coal dust so moistened that the hazard of an explosion is lessened. This paper will describe a further successful application of air conditioning in a coal mine, where, for over three years, all intake air has been cooled to a constant temperature for the sole purpose of preventing roof falls. Effect of Warm Weather on Mine Roof It is generally known by mining men that some, if not all, coal mines have more trouble from bad roof during the warm summer months than in winter. Also, it has been observed that roof on intake airways is usually worse than on the return entries, after the air has circulated through the mine. Some mines and some coal seams are much more affected than others. In the Clinton district of Indiana, the No. IV coal seam has a good, firm, gray shale roof except during the summer months, when it deteriorates badly and falls in small slabs 1 to 6 in. thick. Timbering is not very efficacious during this period because in time the roof will shear around the supporting prop or crossbar and either dislodge the timber or leave it supporting only a few inches of crumbly shale (Fig. 1). This action is renewed each summer, choking airways with fallen slate, tearing down trolley wires, hampering haulage, endangering men and adding considerably to the deadwork cost. Only when mines have been worked for a period of years and have been advanced a long distance from the shaft do the active workings become comparatively free of this trouble, and even then the intake entries are still a source of much deadwork. Such was the annoying situation at the mine of the Saxton Coal Mining Co. operated in the No. IV coal just north of Terre Haute, Ind. THE upper limit of richness of concentrates that can be smelted by means of the blast furnace without added diluents is fixed by the opera-tion of sintering. A sinter feed with normal gangue constituents, con-taining more than about 50 per cent of lead, tends to fuse; as a result, air does not come sufficiently into contact with the sulphides at roasting temperatures, and sulphur elimination is poor. Since most lead con-centrates now contain 55 to 80 per cent lead, it is necessary to add diluents to lower the grade of such sinter feed to about 50 per cent or less. This not only entails the expense of providing barren diluents when adequate diluents containing precious metals are not available but also appreciably lowers the capacity of the blast furnace to produce lead and increases slag losses. Attempts to desulphurize rich lead concentrates by methods other than sintering have not proved successful. Flash roasting, for example, converts much of the lead sulphide to lead sulphate rather than to oxide. However, this suggested the possibility that deliberate flash roasting of the concentrates to sulphate, followed by sinter roasting of the resulting product, might prove promising, particularly inasmuch as the elimination of sulphur from lead sulphate requires heat alone and not contact with atmospheric oxygen. The sintering of lead sulphate products has additional interest because important amounts of such products are now treated by lead smelters. Many of the problems that occur in the preparation plant originate from practices in the mine. Impurities in raw coal can be in the seam itself or from extraneous material taken in mining from the roof or bottom. In the case of underground mines, the choice of mining equipment will affect the size consist and the amount of extraneous material included with the coal. Also, governmental regulations concerning the degree of rock dusting, gobbing underground, and cleanup have increased the dirt in raw coal. Sulfur dioxide emission standards, on the other hand, are pressuring the coal industry to clean coal more thoroughly. Coal supplied for coking purposes is nearly all upgraded by washing, while for the largest market, electric power generation, a high proportion is shipped as a raw product with processing, in whole or in part, only necessary when excess impurities are mined with the coal. This chapter will deal primarily with plants that process or wash coal to some extent (Fig. 1) and only incidentally with mines shipping raw run-of-mine coal crushed to a top size of, usually, 51 to 102 mm (2 to 4 in.), with little, if any, other treatment. JUSTIFICATION FOR COAL PREPARATION During the past decade, major changes have occurred affecting the market, profit, and long-range planning of the coal industry. Mining companies have become "partners" with consumers at many new and some old mines, both for steam and metallurgical coals. Coal properties have become "assigned" tonnages at mutually agreed upon conditions and prices. Lower unit-train tariffs have been instrumental in helping coal markets to compete against oil and nuclear energy. Coal prices for power plants are still on a Btu (British thermal unit)

"Salt Lake City was founded July 24, 1847, by Mormons under the leadership of Brigham Young. It had a population of 118,110, according to the United States census of 1920, and of 151,968, according to a civic survey, January 1, 1925. The Salt Lake metropolitan district is estimated to have 180,079 inhabitants.The city's area is 51.8 square miles. Its altitude is 4,354 feet. It has 514 miles of streets, of which 91 miles are paved. The streets in the main portion of the city are 132 feet wide and the blocks are 660 feet long. S. Bureau of Mines are in the eastern part of the city. Fort Douglas is east of the University the country clubs are in the southeastern portion of the city. The State Fair Grounds are in the northwestern portion.The city is the center of a trade area about 700 miles in diameter and is in almost the exact center of a circle that embraces the principal western mining areas. Coal mine operators are obligated to mitigate or plan for subsidence under the new regulations. This paper presents the types of subsidence control measures that may be employed to meet these requirements, which include: changes in mining methods, strata stabilization after coal extraction, construction of specially designed surface structures and foundations to accommodate ground movements, and comprehensive planning and coordination of surface land use with underground mining. The basic principles of these techniques, along with specific procedures that may be followed to implement them, are briefly discussed. Subsidence control methods that are currently being investigated are mentioned.

The experiments reported in this paper have been fruitful in disclosing the mechanism of the deformation of iron in compression. They have established the nature of "deformation bands," "etch bands," or "X-bands," that have been a recognized but little understood feature in the structure of cold-worked metals since the early days of metallography, and have shown the role of the bands in the development of preferred orientations by cold-working. The work has also shown the relation of the orientation of individual grains to the preferred orientation of the aggregate. Some of the methods previously used in the determination of the indices of slip planes and slip directions are shown to be untrustworthy in the presence of deformation bands. The conclusion is reached that many slip planes and slip directions must operate during each stage in the compression of a single crystal, and that theories failing to take account of this require revision. In conducting the experiments a method of compression has been used by which extreme reductions can easily be reached, even to the limit set by the metal's capacity to deform without fracture. The work is a portion of a research program on the plastic properties of iron and steel. It is being used as a foundation for studies of orientntions resulting from recrystallization and is being extended to other metals and other types of deformation. Previous Work The previous experiments are few and have given confusing results Onol compressed a polycrystalline alpha-iron specimen between two flan plates of a testing machine and found that severe deformation oriented the crystals into a duplex preferred orientation, one set of crystallites having a cube diagonal of the body-centered cubic lattice parallel to the compression axis, and another set having a cube axis parallel to the compression axis. We shall speak of this structure as a double fiber texture of the type [111] + [100]. Wever2 also made an X-ray determination of the texture

For a great many years fusion welding has been used in and around petroleum refineries, but it is only within six or seven years that the more important pressure vessels have been constructed by this process, because before that time the properties of fusion welds would not with-stand such rigorous service. Since the adoption of fusion welding for the construction of this equipment, the refiner has required pressure vessels suitable for operation over a very wide range of conditions. On the one hand, vessels must operate at extremely high temperatures, in the range of 950° to 1000° F., and on the other vessels must be suitable for operation at sub-zero temperatures down as low as -75° F. Also, vessels are required suitable for operation at pressures upwards of 1000 lb. per sq. in., and as low as a 29-in. vacuum. In addition, vessels are required to withstand the attack of very corrosive mediums. It has been a rather difficult task for the fabricator to meet all of these require-ments, but as a result of the extensive research carried on by steel manu-facturers and several fabricators of class I vessels, practically all of these demands have been met. In order to meet the refiners' requirements for this wide range of conditions, the fabricator has worked closely with the metallurgist. This has enabled him to choose the proper base metal for each service condition, but it has been the fabricator's problem to develop a welding rod and welding technique, as well as a heat-treatment, that would produce in the welded vessel characteristics in and around the weld comparable to those in the base metal. Where corrosion is not a serious problem, and where the operating temperatures are not too high, ordinary carbon steel has served very well. But when corrosion is serious, and/or when the temperatures are either very high or very low, it is necessary to use some form of alloy steel to give satisfactory service.

The Tri-State zinc-lead mining district embraces an extensive area, including the northeastern part of Ottawa County, Oklahoma, the southeastern part of Cherokee County, Kansas, and adjacent portions of Missouri, mainly in Jasper County. The Oklahoma-Kansas portion of the district, in the vicinity of Picher, Okla., has been the principal producing area since 1917, and the present milling practice in that section is the subject of this paper. This district is the largest zinc-producing field in the United States. In 1926 it produced 55 per cent of the nation's zinc and 15 per cent of its lead, and in 1933 it produced 35 per cent of the zinc and 10 per cent of the lead. From 1842 to 1933, inclusive, the total output of the district was 18 1/2 million tons of zinc and lead concentrates valued at 818 million dollars. Of this production, the Oklahoma-Kansas, or Picher, field yielded over 9 million tons valued at over 400 million dollars. Mining operations in the Oklahoma-Kansas field near Picher and Baxter Springs began in 1915. The mills built it that time consisted merely of gravity concentration plants employing jigs and tables and the same flow sheets as had proved satisfactory with the free-milling ores such as were mined in the Joplin-Webb City fields in Missouri. The Kansas-Oklahoma ores proved to be much richer but also more refractory to treatment than those in the Joplin area, and contained a considerable percentage of zinc mineral not freed by the amount of crushing usually practiced in preparing the ores for jigging. Thus the old Joplin type of mill, with its usual two or four jigs and a few tables, proved inadequate and resulted in excessive tailings losses sometimes as high as 50 per cent

Tungsten ingots with and without small amounts of aluminum, silicon, and potassium were prepared by conventional powder-metallurgy techniques and hot-rolled to 0.001-in.-thick sheet. The ingots were rolled three different ways: I) initially cross-rolled, then straight-rolled; 2) straight-rolled, and 3) straig-ht-rolled, then cross-rolled. Total reductions were 99.8 pct. Samples of the sheet were annealed, in vacuo, at temperatures from 1200" to 2200°C. Substructures and textures were determined by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The doping agents were found to form particles of mullite (Al,Si,O,,) which, on rolling., appear to form strings of particles aligned parallel to the rolling direction. These strings of purticles are associated with an increase in the recrystal-lizution temperature from 1400°C for undoped sheet ThE addition of small amounts of aluminum, silicon, and potassium to tungsten has a profound effect on the grain structure of drawn and recrystallized wire.'" The grains generally do not occupy the entire cross section of the wire and have lengths many times the wire diameter. The grain boundaries are, in general, nearly parallel to the wire axis and have long ''fingers" projecting one into the other as may be seen in Fig. 1, a longitudinal section of recrystallized doped wire. When unsuitable additions or no additions are made or the wire is not sufficiently reduced during draw- to 2000°C for doped sheet. The particles also limit lateral grain growth while allowing growth parallel to the rolling direction. This results in the formation by primary re crystallization of large highly elongated grains of specific preferred orientation. The undoped sheet recrystallized to small equiaxed gains. The preferred orientations of the large grains were determined from axis density plots to be (113) (691). (0i3) (362), (116) (304) types for the initially cross-rolled then straight rolled material. These orientations are similar to the orientations of the large elongated grains in doped and heavily drawn tungsten wire. The nucleation of the large grains appears to occur by recovery of certain of the polygonized regions of specific orientation, followed by strain-induced boundary migration.

THE normal method of preparing metallic alloys for commercial use involves the preparation of a melt containing the given components in the chosen proportions and allowing the homogeneous liquid mass to solidify in a mold of the desired form. The solidification is frequently accompanied by a segregation of the alloying elements in different parts of the casting. When the segregation is occasioned primarily by marked differences in density of the solid and liquid phases, it is termed "gravity" segregation. When the segregation conforms to a. selective freezing in harmony with the teachings of the equilibrium diagram of the alloy system-i.e., the lower melting phases are concentrated in the regions of the casting last to freeze-it is often referred to as " normal" segrega-tion. However, in many cases the lower-melting part of the system is concentrated in the parts of the casting first to freeze and the result in this case is termed "inverse" segregation. To complete the. terminology of the subject, normal segregation in a single phase is usually called "coring" and the word will be used in that sense in this paper. Inverse segregation, particularly when the liquid phase is exuded or sweated out on the surface of the casting, is sometimes called "location." Unfortunately, some ambiguity has arisen from the use of this term and it is perhaps advisable to confine its use to the dictionary definition; namely, "The separation of two phases by heat sufficient to melt one but not the other." The gravity and normal types of segregation are both well understood and to some extent are controllable by taking advantage of the most favorable cooling rate for a given casting condition. Inverse segregation has received considerable attention from several investigators- but none of the theories offered seem to account in a convincing way for the many examples of this type. The observations made in the present work on segregation in single crystals, and in some other castings, tend to support one theory of the mechanism of inverse segregation and definitely to
