MALL generators and motors are required to Soperate, in some critical applications, at temperatures where cold-worked silver-bearing copper re-crystallizes. Copper containing up to 30 oz Ag per ton has been used for many years to build the highest grades of commutators and slip rings. With failure of commutators impending because silver-bearing copper cannot withstand the stresses imposed at these higher temperatures, Cr-Cu was tried as a substitute with varying degrees of success. Cr-Cu proved difficult to fabricate because a critical heat treatment was necessary to obtain sufficient ductility. Besides, its rupture strength was shown to be low at operating temperatures, its electrical conductivity lower than desired, and its cost high. Furthermore, it often contained hidden flaws. The Nippert Electric Products Co. set out to find a better material by undertaking a research project with the stated objective of providing a material suitable for commutators that would have 1) a softening temperature above 750°F (400°C), 2) a minimum electrical conductivity of 90 pct of that of pure copper, 3) a strength not less that that of cold-worked silver-bearing copper, and 4) a materials cost of not over 1.5 times the cost of copper containing 25 to 30 oz Ag per ton. No commercial alloy met these specifications. However, it was found that copper containing from 0.18 to 0.35 pct Zr could be produced quite easily in the laboratory, and promised to fulfill the major requirements noted above. CANANEA has long been recognized as a remarkable field for geologic study. The copper deposits and rocks of the district have been described by many geologists and engineers, but only the most general correlations have been made between Can-anea sedimentary rocks and other known sedimentary sections in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The present paper describes the Cananea sediments in greater detail than has been done before and attempts to fit the Cananea sedimentary section more closely into the geologic time table. The lack of well-preserved fossils has made it difficult to date the sediments accurately in geologic time, but it is possible to make tentative correlations between the Cananea sediments and the southeastern Arizona sections, based largely upon lithology and general position in the geologic column. It appears that sedimentation at Cananea and Bisbee may have been closely similar during Paleozoic time. Even such generalized correlations, however, may be subject to considerable modification in the future. The present study has led to the recognition of other problems of age and mineralization relationships in the Cananea district. Cananea is located in the north-central part of the state of Sonora, Mexico, at an elevation of 5270 ft. It is about 135 miles northeast of Hermosillo, the state capital, and 25 miles south of the international boundary. By road Cananea is 40 miles from the twin towns of Naco, Ariz., and Naco, Sonora, and about 50 miles from Bisbee, Ariz. It is served by the Nogales-Naco branch of the railroad, F.C. Pacifico, and is connected with Chihuahua and Mexico City by the Aeronaves airline. The headwaters of three rivers flowing to the Gulf of California are located in the Cananea Mountains: the San Pedro River, flowing to the north; the Sonora River, flowing south and west; and the Mag-dalena River, flowing west. Elenita Mountain, the highest point in the district, has an elevation of 8140 ft. The Cananea Mountains extend in a series of north-south to northwest-southeast spurs and ridges and are surrounded by gently sloping gravel plains. The mineralized area, lying across the southern and central parts of the range, is about 6 miles long and at most 2 miles wide. Elevations at the mines vary from 5300 ft at Cananea-Duluth mine at the southeast end of the district to between 6000 and 7000 ft at the west end of the mineralized area at Puertecitos-Elenita mines. Principal production has been from the intensely mineralized and altered area of Capote Basin in the central part of the district and the immediately surrounding area to the southeast. The district has produced over 2 billion lb of copper, substantial molybdenum, and minor amounts of lead, zinc, silver, and gold. Total production through 1949 is estimated at more than $300 million. In 1900 large-scale development was started at Cananea by W. C. Greene. Until World War II only high-grade ores were exploited; low-grade ores were extracted after the installation of a large concentrator in the early 1940's, and subsequent operations have been based upon mining and processing ores containing less than 1.0 pct copper from open-pit and underground workings. Mining and concentration of such low-grade ores, however, are made possible only by continued high copper prices, and active exploration for high-grade orebodies has been continued throughout the important mineralized areas. General Geology Study of the involved rock pattern at Cananea has indicated a complex geologic history for the district. Widespread alteration and mineralization have masked many of the salient features and have led to widely varying geologic interpretations over the years. Further work will probably disclose new information which will modify current beliefs. At Cananea a conformable series of sediments of probable Paleozoic age was deposited on an unknown basement. Following Paleozoic time there was an extended period of erosion common to many districts in the southwestern U. S., and there is no present evidence of marine sedimentation at Cananea after the Paleozoic. The eroded surface was eventually covered with a great thickness of extrusive volcanic rocks. The entire series of sediments and volcanic rocks was later intruded by a variety of deep-seated igneous rocks. These included the Cananea granite, the Cuitaca granodiorite, the El Torre syenite, the Tinaja diorite, the Campana diabase and gabbro and the Colorada rhyolite quartz porphyry. Faulting of early age, probably prior to the deposition of the volcanic rocks, may have been responsible for the present position of some of the intrusive rock masses. In the Capote mine on the third and fourth levels the northwest-striking Rick-etts fault zone, with apparent offset of about 800 ft, has been sealed by a dike-like mass of Cananea granite which gradually increases in size with depth. In lower levels of the mine the granite forms a large southeast-plunging mass generally following the course of the Ricketts zone. The granite is not known southeast of the Capote-Oversight mine areas and the Ricketts fault does not appear in the vol-canic~ southeast of Capote Basin, but several plugs of Colorada quartz porphyry cut the volcanics along the assumed general southeast trend of the Ricketts zone. Since the adoption by the U. S. Bureau of Standards several years ago of specifications for standard 100- and 200-mesh sieves, frequent requests have been received that this Bureau test and certify sieves of other sizes than these. With a view to the adoption of a series of standard testing sieves which might be of use to all industries making fineness tests, this Bureau for two years has been studying the question of such a standard screen scale. Various scales that have been proposed were considered, and information was sought of representative firms in the various industries interested as to their requirements. Manufacturers of sieves have also been consulted as to the desirability of different screen scales and the practicability of their manufacture. As a result of this study of the question, a conference was called at the Bureau of Standards, Apr. 20, 1916, of representatives of various committees of the American Society for Testing Materials, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Institute of Mining Engineers, American Foundrymen's Association, Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, American Water Works Association, American Institute of Metals and the American Spice Trade Association; also representatives of the Committee of Revision of the U. S. Pharmacopæia, the U. S. Geological Survey, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the U. S. Office of Public Roads and Rural Engineering, the U. S. Office of Grain Standardization and the U. S. Bureau of Standards; also representatives of a number of private firms engaged in industries in which sieves are used, such as the glass, the drug milling, the abrasive, the asphalt, the mining, the spice, the chemical, and the graphite industries; also representatives of the firms in this country manufacturing wire cloth and sieves. INTRODUCTION The tax structure of foreign mining investment into the United States has a significant impact on the financing and the profitability of the operation. For these reasons, it is critical for the foreign investor to develop and implement a well planned tax strategy that will enable its venture to: (1) reduce its U.S. income tax liability (2) lower U.S. withholding taxes when funds are transferred from the United States, and (3) decrease or defer home country taxation on its U.S. earnings ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF INVESTMENT A threshold business and tax consideration is the form in which the investment is to be made. The most common alternatives include: forming or acquiring a U.S. mining corporation, directly establishing a branch mining operation, or entering into a joint venture or partnership with a U.S. mining company. U.S. Corporations The most common structure through which foreign mining companies engage in business in the United States is to form a U.S. mining corporation. Forming a U.S. Corporation. If the investor decides to establish a new U.S. corporation the organization is relatively simple. No distinctions are made in the United States between "public" and "private" forms of incorporation. Minimum share capital is not usually required and share capital may consist of shares with no par value. Since corporate law is the responsibility of the individual states, the foreign investor must choose a state in which to incorporate. If appreciated mining property is transferred to a corporation solely in exchange for stock or securities in that corporation, and the transferors have control of the corporation (defined as at least 80 percent of all voting shares and at least 80 percent of all other shares) immediately after the exchange, no gain or loss will be recognized. However, if the transferors receive cash or other mining properties in addition to stock, any resulting gain may, in certain situations, be taxed to the extent of the cash and the fair market value of other property received. Acquiring an Existing U.S. Corporation. Acquiring an existing U.S. mining corporation is not as straight-forward as forming a corporation. This alternative may be accomplished through either a stock or an asset acquisition. Generally, with a stock acquisition the purchaser inherits all of the business and tax attributes of the former mining corporation. If the investor is able to acquire mining assets, however, the purchaser will usually be able to avoid any unknown or hidden liabilities that could be attached to an existing corporation. Another principal advantage in acquiring assets is that the purchase price may be directly allocated to the acquired mines or other mineral-related assets with the result that the assets' depreciable base may be increased. Assuming the domestic seller and the foreign purchaser can agree, it is generally advisable to allocate the purchase price in the sales agreement to specific individual assets. From the foreign investor's standpoint, it is preferable to allocate the purchase price to depreciable assets such as buildings and equipment versus an allocation to mineral land holdings or intangibles such as goodwill, which are generally not depreciable. It is not uncommon, however, for a seller mining company being acquired to insist for tax reasons that the investor purchase shares rather than assets. If the foreign

All the possible ways of forming simple two-dislocation boundaries in multiple slip orientations are deduced. It is shown that the principal differences in work hardening behavior of crystals plastically deformed in these orientations can he accounted for in terms of the likelihood of formation of diffuse boundaries, or deformation bands, consisting of the products of dislocation reactions of the Lomer type. Also, it is pointed out that the break-up of boundaries under the applied stress is more likely to yield interstitial jogs than vacancy jogs, whereas glide dislocations cutting throuqh dislocations trapped in particularly stable boundam'es can acquire both types of jogs. USING Frank's' grain boundary formula, Ball and Hirsch2 determined the parameters of all the possible boundaries that can be built from two sets of glide dislocations in the fee structure. This paper deduces the geometrical possibilities for the formation of these two-dislocation boundaries in the different multiple slip orientations, and discusses the role of boundaries in work hardening and in jog formation. Formation of Two-Dislocation Boundaries in Mutiple Slip Orientations. The parameters of the possible two-dislocation boundaries for any crystal orientation can be deduced most conveniently using the boundary formulae due to Amelinckx,3 in conjunction with the stereographic projection shown in Fig. 1. Suppose that slip occurs in a-BC and ß-CA. According to Amelinckx, when the two systems of glide dislocations are parallel, the rotation axis, u, of the boundary is parallel to (a x ß) and the unit normal, u, defining the boundary plane is parallel to (a x ß) x (BC x CA). On the other hand, when the glide dislocations form a crossed grid, u is parallel to (BC x CA) and u is parallel to (a x CA) x (ß x BC). In Fig. 1, (a x ß) is the pole of the great circle passing through a and ß, so that u is parallel to DC, i.e., parallel to [110]. Furthermore, (a x ß) x (BC x CA) is the pole of the great circle passing through DC and 6, so that u is parallel to [110]. Hence, when all the glide dislocations are parallel, the boundary is pure tilt with parameters u = [110], v = [ 110]. Similarly, it may be shown that the corresponding crossed grid of dislocations is a mixed boundary with u = [111], u = [111]. Consider the case of a crystal compressed in the [001] orientation. In this orientation, according to Fig. 1, there are eight available slip systems. In what follows, the different types of two-dislocation boundaries that are possible in this orientation will be examined by taking different combinations of two slip systems out of the available eight, with a-BC always one of the systems. Case (i)—Slip Systems a-BC and d-CB. The formation of a tilt boundary in (101), which consists of a crossed grid of edge dislocations with vectors BC andCB, is illustrated in Fig. 2(a). As the figure shows, slip is required in the system a-BC in one part of the crystal and in d-CB in the other part, with both sets of dislocations entering the boundary from opposite sides. The rotation axis of the boundary lies in (101), depending on the relative densities of the two sets of edge dislocations in the boundary. Case (ii)-Slip Systems a-BC and ß-CA. Data were obtained with hematite with octyl hydroxamate and oleate as collectors to determine the mechanism of collector adsorption and also to establish the roles that conditioning time and temperature assume in this system. The presence of hydroxy complexes of iron are apparently necessary for chemisorption of collector to occur, and it appears as if extended conditioning times and elevated temperature promote greater dissolution of the mineral and hence greater concentrations of hydroxy complexes. Data were also collected with two natural hematitic ores. With one ore that was ground to 70% - 15u, an addition of 0.4 lb per ton hydrox-amate resulted in a final concentrate recovery of 86% at a grade of 64% iron. Satisfactory concentrate grade could not be obtained with fatty acid under these conditions. The effect of conditioning time prior to the addition of collector was also examined with another ore. When the ore was conditioned for 3 min, 19% of the iron was recovered in the concentrate at a grade of 67% Fe. With a conditioning time of 7 min, 73% of the iron reported to the concentrate at a grade of 62% Fe. These products were obtained with an addition of 0.2 lb per ton hydroxamate. This ore also responded well to flotation with fatty acid. The use of potassium octyl hydroxamate as a collector for iron oxide has been the subject of an earlier study.1 From this initial study, it was suspected that hydrolysis of surface ferric iron was involved in collector adsorption. More recent work in other systems has shown that slight mineral dissolution, followed by hydrolysis of cations common to the mineral lattice, is apparently necessary, and that adsorption of these hydroxy com- plexes probably occurs prior to the adsorption of collector. In view of these facts, work has been continued on the hydroxamate-hematite and oleate-hematite systems to gain better insight into the mechanisms of collector adsorption on iron oxide. Microflotation experiments in conjunction with infrared analysis were used in this regard. In addition it was felt necessary to establish more clearly the responses that can be obtained from natural ores when hydroxamate is used as collector as compared to those obtained when fatty acid is used. Experimental Materials and Techniques Pure potassium oleate, potassium octyl hydroxamate, synthesized from hydroxylamine hydrochloride and methyl octanoate, and a distilled Tall Oil were employed as collectors. The drying of fine coal involves special techniques, which are discussed and analyzed. Types of dryers employing these techniques are described. Calculations are presented for new methods of dealing with the entrained dust that is always present in fine coal drying operations. NEW conditions, new requirements, and new methods have increased the demand for more efficient and more economical methods of drying fine coal. Dewatering of larger sizes may reduce the surface moisture to 8 or 9 pct. It is more difficult, however, to dewater sizes below 1/4 in., and some filter cakes still contain as much as 20 or 25 pct moisture. Increased freight rates and stricter consumer specifications have resulted in a demand for further reductions in moisture content. This can be obtained only by heat drying. Most modern methods of heat drying disperse or spread the mass of coal to be dried, in an atmosphere of dry hot gases. The more intimate the contact between coal particles and hot gases, the quicker and more efficient the drying operation will be. Two different techniques are generally employed, using either a fluidized condition or an entrained condition of the coal to be dried. Fluidized Condition Fluidization of a body of sand was defined and explained by Fraser and Yancey in a paper published in 1926.' This condition was artificially obtained and maintained by proper regulation of the rate of air flowing through the sand body. "The sand bath 'boils' uniformly on the surface," they write, "and feels like a fluid." The fluidization technique was also described and analyzed by Steinmetzer2 in connection with the operation of an air cleaning table. His main conclusions are as follows: "Fluidity is, for the particles involved, the possibility of motion with minimum friction. . . . Then fluidity requires the introduction of various forms of energy capable of neutralising frictions. Two solutions can be used— air and/or mechanical motions (such as the shaking motion of the carrying deck of the air table). The combination of mechanical and air energy will give the widest margins of size ratios and of bed thickness, translated in capacity per unit area of the carrying table." Richardson and Langston3 have indicated results obtained with a dryer working with a fluidized bed. They used a vertical tube type of dryer, however, without the assistance of any mechanical energy, and without any lateral motion of the fluidized bed. The capacity of such a dryer is too limited for practical applications, since the speed of the acceptable air currents is held to the speed of fall of the particles involved. Capacities as low as 182 Ib of coal per hr per sq ft of dryer area are indicated. As stated by Richardson: "A basic limitation to a fluidised bed dryer is that the velocities of the gas must be held within a definite range; with velocities of 10 ft per second, all coal minus 6 mesh in size will be entrained, and the operation is then similar to that of a Flash dryer." A fluidized bed must be virtually static. The coal particles simply kept in suspension offer a minimum resistance to the flow of gases, insuring the most favorable conditions for rapid evaporation of surface moisture. However, very wet fine coal, i.e., over 12 pct of surface moisture, will be delivered in the forms of mud balls, or as a soggy, sticky mass, almost impossible to disperse, sticking and acting as a wet blanket on the deck. Strong currents of gases and wide deck perforations will be required to punch holes in the wet mass and gradually loosen and fluidize it. The mechanics of fluidizing a bed of coal in a gas medium for the purpose of obtaining the most efficient drying condition are entirely similar when the fluid used is water and the purpose is to break up and distend a bed of coal to be cleaned so that perfect stratification according to densities will be insured. Purely mechanical energy is used in the basket-type jig, water pulsations in the piston and in the Baum-type jigs. A combination of mechanical motion and of air pulsation offers the most efficient and favorable conditions. Entrained Condition The most critical factor to be considered in the design of a dryer employing the entrained condition technique is the speed of the hot gases to be circulated in the drying column. With insufficient gas velocity, excessive amounts of the largest sizes will drop to the bottom of the dryer column without being thoroughly dried. On the other hand, high gas velocity will cause degradation, dust losses, and high power consumption. Figs. 1 and 2, reproduced from Hanot,4 show the relative importance of speed and temperature for various sizes of particles. It can be seen, for instance, that to maintain in unstable equilibrium particles of 1/4-in. size in a gas current at 500°C, a speed of 30 meters per sec, or 6000 fpm, will be required. For % -in. particles an almost prohibitive speed of 45 meters per sec, or 9000 fpm, will be necessary. In practice, maximum gas velocities of 3000 fpm are recommended; since power increases as the cube of the velocity, it can be seen that beyond certain limits such dryers would not be economical. The addition of nitrogen (0.10 to 0.20 pct) to Fe-Cr-Ni alloys of simulated commercial purity results in a real displacement of the u phase boundaries to higher chromium contents. The effect is small for the (Y + s)? boundary, but is pronounced for the (y + a +s)/(y + a) boundary. Although there is an indication of an exceptionally large shift of the n boundaries to higher chromium contents, especially in steels with nitrogen over 0.2 pct, the major portion of this apparent shift results from the fact that carbide and nitride precipitation cause "chromium impoverishment" of the matrices. The effect of combined additions of nitrogen and silicon to the Fe-Cr-Ni phase diagram is demonstrated also. Nitrogen can nullify the effect of about 1 pct Si in shifting the (y + o)/? phase boundary to lower values of chromium at all nickel levels from 8 to 20 pct. NItrogen can nullify this U-forming effect of about 2 pct Si at the 8 pct Ni level, but not at the 20 pct Ni level. The alloys studied were in both the cast and the wrought conditions. There are indications that the u phase forms more slowly in the cast alloys than in the wrought alloys if both are in the completely austenitic state. The presence of 6 ferrite in the cast alloys accelerates the formation of U. Cold working increases the rate of o formation in both cast and wrought alloys. THE major improvement in Fe-Cr-Ni austenitic alloys in recent years has been in the addition or removal of minor alloying elements to facilitate better control of corrosion resistance, sensitization, and heat resistance. One shortcoming of the austenitic Fe-Cr-Ni alloys, which never has been completely circumvented, is their propensity toward u formation. In the AISI-type 310 (25 pct Cr-20 pct Ni) and type 309 (25 pct Cr-12 pct Ni) steels, sufficient amounts of u phase can form, if service or treatment is in a suitable temperature range, to cause severe embrittlement. Also, there is a growing conviction that this phase may be contributory to some unexpected decreases in the corrosion resistance of certain of the 18 pct Cr-8 pct Ni-type steels. The present paper discusses the effect of nitrogen additions on the location of the (r+u)/d and the (y+a+u)/(y+a) phase boundaries in the ternary Fe-Cr-Ni system, for cast and wrought alloys of simulated commercial purity, and in similar alloys containing up to about 2.5 pct Si. The objective is to define compositional limits for alloys which will not be susceptible to u formation when used near 1200°F (650°C). An excellent review of the early studies of the u phase in the Fe-Cr-Ni system has been compiled by Foley.1 Rees, Burns, and Cook2 have determined a high purity phase diagram for the ternary system, whereas Nicholson, Samans, and Shortsleeve3 are- stricted themselves to a portion of the simulated commercial-purity phase diagram. Both groups of investigators show almost an identical position for the commercially significant (y+u)/y phase boundary. Further comparison of the work of the two groups indicates that, below the 8 pct Ni level, the commercial alloys have a decidedly greater propensity toward u formation than the high purity alloys. The two groups of workers agreed that both the AISI-type 310 (25 pct Cr-20 pct Ni) and the type 309 (25 pct Cr-12 pct Ni) steels are well within the (y+~) region and that the 18 pct Cr-8 pct Ni-type alloys straddle the U-forming phase boundaries. Nicholson et al.3 showed, in addition, that these boundaries shift toward lower chromium contents if greater than nominal amounts of silicon or molybdenum are added. The effect of nitrogen on the location of the s phase boundaries in the Fe-Cr-Ni system has not been known with any certainty. In 1942, an approach to this problem was made by Krainer and Leoville-Nowak,' but at that time they apparently were unaware of the slow rate of s formation in strain-free samples and aged their samples for insufficient times, e.g., 100 hr at 650°C (1200°F) and 800°C (1470°F). For this reason, it would be expected that their (y+ u) /y boundary would be shifted toward lower chromium contents (restricted ?-field) when equilibrium conditions were approximated more closely. Procedure for Studying the Alloys The alloys used were prepared in the following way: Heats of 200 lb each were melted in an induction furnace. A grain orientation distribution function, P(u,F), was developed for use in predicting physical properties in oriented metals. Examples are given of the use of the function to predict thermal expansion coefficients in rolled uranium rods and plate. The P(u,F) function was synthesized from X-ray difpaction intensity measurements, Ii, norrnally used to plot inverse pole figures. The symbols u and F specify the angles that the crystallographic axes of the grain make with the normal to the sample surface and P(u, F) gives the number of grains oriented in each direction, (u,F). P(u,F) is obtained from a least squares fit of the Ii to an orthonormal set of spherical harmonic functions. The P(u, F) function was also used to define a quantity, J, which is a measure of the departure of the orientation distribution from unifomzity (or "randomness"). The J parameter may be used to follow, quantitatively, the amount of preferred orientation induced as a function of mechanical working or heat treatment. An example is given of the application of the J parameter to prefevred orientation studies of hot- and cold-rolled uranium rods and hot-rolled uranium plate. Because P(u,F) is derived from relative intensity measurements by the powder diffraction technique, it is applicable to material with large absorption coefficients and/or grain size and is particularly suitable for characterizing the preferred orientation of large numbers of samples such as fuel elenzents for a nuclear reactor. IN general the physical properties of an oriented metal depend on the direction in which the properties are measured. Hence to predict physical properties the grain orientation must be known as a function of the direction of the specimen. The conventional methods of expressing preferred orientation measurements are the pole figure1 and the inverse pole figure.2-8 Both methods are difficult to use for predicting physical propertiess because they are graphical and because they are stereographic projections and hence are not "area-true." In the present report a quantitative orientation distribution function, P(u,F), is synthesized from pole density measurements normally used to plot inverse pole figures. For inverse pole figure plots the pole densities, pi, are obtained by powder dif-fractometer intensity measurements of their reflections from a flat surface of the sample, normal to the direction of interest. Each pole density, pi, represents a single orientation, i, and is proportional to the volume of material with orientation, i; hence a set of pi gives an approximation for the general orientation for the sample direction measured. In uranium metallurgy, the main purpose is to obtain a product containing 80-85% U308 (yellowcake) from ores whose average grade is a mere 0.21% U30& Essentially, the task of extraction and concentration involves dissolving the ore's U308 values, followed by purification and concentration of the uranium-rich solution (using such operations as filtration, clarification, and ion-exchange), and then selectively precipitating and isolating U308. Leaching is First Step In yellowcake production mills, the first chemical change occurs by leaching the ore with either sulfuric acid-as done by Anaconda and Kerr-McGee-or with an alkaline solution of, say, sodium carbonate, as done by United Nuclear-Homestake Partners. The choice of either acid or alkaline leaching is not an arbitrary one: it depends on the chemical and physical characteristics of a particular ore. That is, on the presence of clays, organic compounds (usually of carbonaceous origin), and soluble impurities, as well as on the ore's wetness and grindability.

ERNST PROCHASKA, Bonne Terre, Mo. (written discussion*).-The special importance of this paper is the fact that it calls special attention to the existence of organic sulfur in coal. Many writers have denied the existence of a chemical compound of carbon with sulfur in coal, .but later investigations, and especially the paper by Fraser and Yancey, prove undeniably its existence. As we become more fully convinced of its existence and as the present methods of washing, either in a jig or on tables, are unable to separate the organic sulfur, it remains for an inven-tive genius to perfect a chemical washing process whereby the sulfur will be, dissolved out of the coal, or we must abandon entirely the washing of such coal.
