The Alaska Gastineau Mining Co.'s mine is located at Perseverance, about 4 mi. east of Juheau, Alaska. Its property consists of a group of claims, the lode system traversing these claims for a distance of 11,000 ft. (3352 m.). It is shown in Fig. 1. The ore deposits occur in what is known as the Juneau gold belt. This gold belt can be traced for about 50 mi. northwest of Juneau and 40 mi. southeast. It consists of a single band, several hundred feet wide, in which stringers and veins of quartz, carrying gold, occur in a slate formation near its contact with some altered volcanic rock known as greenstone. The Perseverance orebody consists of stringer lodes, having a strike northwest and southeast, dipping about 60° to the northeast. These

In general, the art of securing copper from sulphide ores or concentrates may be said to consist of : (1) separation, in the molten state, of copper sulphide with some iron sulphide, from the great bulk of gangue-material, followed by (2) elimination of sulphur and iron from the molten matte, by oxidation and fluxing, leaving metallic copper. The definition is made broad enough to cover the general practice, whether or not the ore or concentrate is given a preliminary roast for the removal of surplus sulphur. The above process, which I will designate as the smelting process, makes necessary the presence in the ore, or the addition thereto, of such silica, lime, and iron as may be necessary for the formation of a light and fusible slag, together with sufficient sulphur and iron for the formation of copper-matte, and also the addition to the matte of sufficient silica for the oxidation and fluxing-out of the iron. These items, together with the cost of fuel sufficient for melting the mass, constitute important items of cost in the copper-smelting process. Numerous cases where fluxing-materials are scarce or dear, or where fuel is expensive, have caused special attention to be given recently to the wet process of copper-extraction, which may be designated as consisting of forming soluble copper salts which are then washed or leached out of the ore or concentrates by dissolving in water or acid. MUCH progress in -blast-furnace construction and in the manufacture of firebrick for furnace linings has been made since the publication of Bulletin 130 of the U. S. Bureau of Mines on "Blast-Furnace Breakouts, Explosions and Slips, and Methods of Prevention," by F. H. Willcox in 1917. At the time of publishing this report comparatively little information was available to blast-furnace men as to the fundamental facts relating to the character of blast-furnace refractories. Some of the accepted theories of only a few years ago have been completely reversed. The mortality of blast-furnace linings used to be so great that nearly every furnace plant had one or more complete linings in the brick shed ready for use in case of a lining suddenly "going out"; it was generally accepted that a furnace could not "keep her lines" more than two or three years at best, and often a hot spot in the shell would develop, or a breakout occur in the hearth or bosh within a year or two after blowing in on a new lining. In some respects these frequent relinings were not so detrimental as to he a complete loss because they afforded opportunities to take advantage of advances in blast-furnace practice. At present the cost of relining has greatly increased, but the life of a lining has also increased. Anything less than five years on a lining is now considered a short blast.

CdS crystals have been grown from a number of metallic solvents such as bismuth, tin, lead, and cadmium. Etching studies have shown that plastic deformation occurs if the crystals are not removed from the solvent prior to the solidification of the solvent, on cooling. The deformed crystals show a umique exciton fluorescence as a function of edge dislocation density. If one grows the CdS in the eutectic alloy of the above four metals (commonly called Wood's metal) the crystals can be removed from the solvent with hot water and no plastic deformation occurs. In this paper, the liquidus solubility measurements of CdS, as a function of temperature, are presented. The data were obtained using a high -temperature filtration technique. CADMIUM-SULFIDE crystals have been grown from a number of metallic solvents1 such as cadmium, bismuth, tin, and lead. Liquidus solubilities of CdS in cadmium,2 bismuth,3 and tin4 have already been measured. Crystals of CdS, in all four metals, have been grown by solution growth: 1) by cooling a saturated solution and 2) by a solution transport method.1'"1 CdS crystals grown in these four solvents have a few characteristics in common: 1) 1.8°K photolumines-cent emission consisted mainly of the radiative recombination of the bound exciton commonly known as I,, 2) slip lines which could easily be seen by the naked eye, and 3) edge dislocation densities in the order of l05 per cu cm.1 It was decided that these slip lines and the high edge dislocation densities were caused by a plastic deformation of the CdS crystals. It was felt that this plastic deformation did not occur during the growth of the crystals nor during the cooling of the solution, but did occur when the solvent which was in contact with the crystals froze. If these assumptions were valid, the slip lines and the high number of dislocations could be reduced or eliminated by removing the crystals from the solvent before the solvent froze. Since crystals of CdS had already been grown separately in such solvents as bismuth, lead, tin, and cadmium, it was felt that crystals could be grown in a eutectic mixture of these four metals. In this work a eutectic (or near eutectic) mixture of bismuth, lead, tin and cadmium in the proportion 50, 26.5, 13.5, and 10 wt pct, respectively, was used to grow CdS crystals. Such a mixture has a melting point of about 70°C and is close in composition to the alloy commonly known as Wood's metals. If the crystals could be grown from this mixture of solvents, and if hot water (>75°C) could be used to separate the crystals of CdS from the metallic solvent, it was hoped that CdS crystals could be grown with little or no plastic deformation which had been ob- served when crystals were grown from these solvents uncombined. CdS crystals were grown from this low melting eutectic mixture of bismuth, lead, tin, and cadmium using the solvent transport method. CdS powder and the appropriate amount of metals were sealed in a quartz tube under a pressure of about 5 X 10-6 torr. This ampule was then placed in a vertical position in a furnace. The temperature was raised to about 900°C. The furnace was designed so that the top of the liquid column within the ampule was between 10° to 40°C higher than the bottom of the liquid column. These temperatures were measured on the outside of the quartz ampule. The ampule was maintained at temperature for 7 to 14 days (depending on the temperature at which transport was taking place) and then the furnace temperature was lowered until the temperature was about 125°C. The ampule was then removed from the furnace, placed in water maintained at about 90°C, and opened in this 90°C environment. The crystals could then be removed from this two-phase liquid (Wood's metal and water) by mechanically picking them out. Alternatively, the crystals could be quantitatively removed by adding an excess of mercury to the mixture of metals, crystals, and hot water. The hot solution of metals and the hot water could be evacuated using a small diameter tube connected to a vacuum. Small amounts of mercury and water could be removed by heating the crystals in vacuum. Crystals prepared using this technique showed no evidence of slip. However, some of these crystals did show edge dislocation densities as high as l04 per cu cm. Some few selected crystals showed no dislocations. Single crystals of CdS were grown as large as 5 by 5 by 0.5 mm. The ampules for the growth of these crystals were 13 mm O.D., 11 mm I.D., 150 mm! LIQUIDUS SOLUBILITY MEASUREMENTS The CdS starting materials was G.E. 118-8-2 powder which was fired in H2S at 1000°C, and then a vapor transport technique5 was applied to produce a "sound" mass of CdS. The Wood's metal was prepared by weighing out bismuth, lead, tin, and cadmium in the proportions of 50, 26.5, 13.5, and 10 wt pct, respectively. The bismuth, cadmium, and lead were from the American Smelting and Refining Co. (ASARCO) and all had purities of 99.999+ pct. The tin was 99.9999 pct spectroscopic grade from the Vulcan Materials Co. The appropriate mixture was placed in a quartz tube, evacuated to a pressure of 5 X 10-6 torr, melted to a liquid, cooled to room temperature under this same vacuum. This ingot was then placed in another quartz tube, evacuated to 5 x l0-6 torr, and sealed off under vacuum. The ampule was then horizontally placed in a furnace. The temperature was raised to 600°C, and over a period of several hours the ampule was vigorously shaken several times. The ampule was then removed from the furnace, and the metallic liquid was

In this paper it will be my endeavor to trace the development of the marine engine and its appurtenances, and the general progress that has taken place in marine engineering generally during the past fifteen years, rather with the object of attributing much of it to the successful efforts of the makers of iron and steel, thereby rendering my thanks to them for the valuable service they have contributed to my profession, than to recount what has been achieved by the skill, ability and perseverance of my colleagues in shipbuilding and engineering. The engineer has been at all times dependent on the ironmaster, and on more than one occasion his progress has been barred by the inability of the latter to overcome some obstacle to success in his manufacture. But on the other hand, it is equally true that the ironmaster has often been ahead of the engineer, and has been prepared, long beforehand, to supply that which would make a success for the marine engineer if he would avail himself of it.

The data were collected by the representatives of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce in Japan and are furnished here through the courtesy of the Department. In connection with the proposed suspension of both new and old Government undertakings and the general depression in building, which is expected to result from the retrenchment policy of the Government, some cuts in iron and steel prices have been made by dealers. It is expected that the Yawata Steel Works may reduce its round bar prices for November delivery by 1 yen.

LOW prices have made 1938 a difficult year for the zinc industry of the world. Particularly in the United States, output had to be radically curtailed to bring production into line with consumption. Despite these unfavorable conditions, some additional plant construction is contemplated. In Jugoslavia, through co-operation with the Government, Trepca Mines is lo build a zinc plant to produce 10,000 metric tons annually, the plant to be ready for operation in July, 1941). Cerro de Pasco is proceeding with its plans for an electrolytic plant in Peru. A pilot plant, to be ready next summer, is under construction. C. W. MERRILL*-Mr. Hughes' paper not only is very well presented but is most timely in that it covers a subject of vital interest to the United States. Tin is one of the strategic metals which has not been found here in appreciable quantities. The total United States tin output since the first recorded production over 100 years ago would not supply current consumption for a fortnight. On the consumption side, tin is extremely important in national defense because of its use in tin plate which, in the form of tin cans, makes it possible to feed properly the armies that the United States recruits from its civilian population in emergencies. Moreover, the internal combustion engines so important in powering tanks, planes, and other war machines, require large quantities of tin alloys for bearings and for soldering. These considerations, along with the fact that Malaya, historically, has been the leading source of tin to the United States, make the kind of information that Mr. Hughes has presented so ably, a matter of vital interest.

UNUSUAL interest has recently centered in the Mojave mining district of California, owing to new discoveries of gold ore at the Silver Queen mine, and subsequently at other neighboring proper- ties. These finds have proved that opportunities exist for the prospector even in old mining districts, where careful search may still be rewarded. The Mojave district is characterized by a group of small hills centering around Soledad Butte, four to six miles southwest of Mojave, in Kern County. This butte is 1250 ft. higher than the surrounding desert and 4000 ft. above sea level. Four miles west of Soledad Mountain are the so-called Middle Buttes, a group of flat-topped hills. ON the headwaters of the Hudson Riser, in a sparsely populated area of the north woods at Tahawus, N. Y., thirty miles from the nearest railroad, is the Maclntyre property of National Lead Co. Operations involve the mining and processing of titaniferous iron ore to produce ilmenite concentrate, and magnetite concentrate containing vanadium, for use in the production of iron, titanium, and vanadium in the war program. Accordingly, Maclntyre at present is classed as a war plant. More than 3000 long tons of ore is ruined daily by opencut methods and treated in an ore concentrating plant.

THE year 1929 was exceedingly busy and prosperous for the iron and steel industry in the United States. The lake shipments of ore were approximately 65,000,000 tons, steel ingots produced were about 57,000,000 tons. Plants were very active. operating for many months well over their rated capacity, slowing down during the last quarter following the severe break in the stock market. The ore tonnage mentioned above was the greatest ever shipped by lake from the Lake Superior region. The trend at the ore mines has been to supplement manual labor by mechanical appliances as much as possible. Mining methods have been greatly improved along the lines of safety as well as to increase the percentage of ore recovery. Crushing and grading of iron ores continued to gain in popularity inasmuch as remarkable blast-furnace operations and records were obtained with sizing and uniformity of raw materials. Progress was made along other lines. The Bradley process for the separation of manganese osicle and iron oside from siliceous manganiferous iron ore was cleuelopecl; also considerable work was clone on a process for the beneficiation of the Cuban laterite ores. Sintering of ores and concentrates increased in popularity. A new analytical method for the deter- mination of sulfur in iron ore was worked out which reduced the time required appreciably. The ore re- serves of the Lake Superior district continued to receive considerable attention and played an important part in the recent mergers which have taken place in the iron ancl steel industry.

Mine financing, or providing adequate capital for developing and bringing a mining property into production, is an essential requirement for a successful operation. Today it presents a different picture than even twenty-five years ago. The day appears to be gone when a mining property could pay its own way from grass roots to production. The country has been quite thoroughly combed for surface showings from which sufficient initial profit could be immediately garnered to pay for further development and production facilities. The four M's for success in mining-mineral, market, management, and money-are still essential; but doubled or tripled wage costs and steep advances in cost of equipment and supplies throw increased emphasis on adequate capital funds for bringing in a prospect and making it a producer. Consequently, the old picturesque, although seldom rewarding, grub- staking procedure where a single venturesome citizen might advance funds to a prospector on a fifty-fifty basis for whatever discovery he might find, has largely disappeared. Its place, to some degree, has been taken by the small syndicate of venturesome members who band together for furnishing funds to a group of prospectors for the same general purposes. Such a syndicate has a definite organization and is usually assured of sufficient initial funds, or flow of funds, to carry on work for several years. It is headed by an engineer-promoter who has had considerable field experience as well as personal knowledge of his prospecting crews. For the owner of a potential mining property who has ample capital, the problem is to determine (1) justification for the necessary investment in exploration and development, and (2) the economics of the enterprise as to size and degree of integration of the final operating entity. If the owner of such a property has little or no capital, he also faces these same basic problems but, in addition, must be able to present the findings of fact and persuade the prospective investor that the enterprise will produce

WHEN so many statements are being made relative to the requirements of zinc metal, it is difficult for some of us who are acquainted with the industry to visualize how it is possible to step up production so as to supply some of the fantastic requirement figures that are published from time to time. I shall attempt to approach this subject from the standpoint of existing conditions which affect production, also keeping in mind the price ceiling under which the industry operates. Total production of primary and secondary zinc in the United States for 1941 will be about 878,000 tons, to which should be added about 36,000 tons of Mexican slab zinc available for consumption or export from the United States, giving a total available of 914,000 tons. Production of slab zinc of all grades in 1942 should be 953,000 tons. Adding the available Mexican supply should bring the total to 989,000 tons.

I DESIRE to make it perfectly clear at the outset that I fully realize the hazardous nature of any attempt to estimate the quantity of iron-ore or any other mineral in the ground. I should not have had the temerity to venture upon an inventory of the iron-ore supplies of the United States except for the requirements of the Conservation Commission. During the preparation of this inventory I have been impressed by the wide diversity in estimates of those best qualified to. hold an opinion, and I am therefore prepared in advance for criticism of my figures. Inasmuch as this report was prepared in large part for unprofessional readers, I considered it necessary to classify and describe the commercial iron-ores in a somewhat elementary manner, in order to explain the reasons for the large element of uncertainty in the estimates. I have therefore given a chemical and a geological classification of iron-ores, which place the commercial deposits in six classes: (1) magmatic segregations in basic igneous rocks; (2) contact-deposits formed in connection with igneous intrusions; (3) concentration-deposits; (4) replacement-deposits; (5) bedded-deposits, and (6) gossan-deposits. The iron-ores are further distinguished under two classes available and not available. This classification is in large measure arbitrary, and it, is evident that it will vary front time to time. In the available class are placed those ores which can be worked at a profit under conditions essentially as they exist at present. Since it depends wholly on the question of costs, the various factors which affect cost will determine the classification of any particular deposit. Its primary task was to study the recommended American practice for rock- dusting coal mines to prevent coal-dust explosions as approved by the American Engineering Standards Committee. THE ores of the Tonopah, district are hard, compact and' highly siliceous. They contain from .1 to 2, per cent. of sulfide material, of which argentite is the valuable mineral; occasionally pyrargyrite is found in the richer ore. The sulfide is, chiefly pyrite with small amounts of chalcopyrite,. and sometimes sphalerite. The ore also contains a small amount of gold-about 1 per cent. by weight of the silver present. The major gangue constituent is quartz but frequently considerable rhodonite-called by the miners pink manganese-is present. For primary crushing, jaw and gyratory crushers are used. These crushers are of such capacity that, in most cases, one 8-hr. shift will supply the mill for 24 hr. The Extension Co., at the Victor ore house, passes the ore through a 13 by. 24-in. Blake type McFarland crusher set at 13 in., and at the No. 29 re house, a 14 by 24-in. Blake type Traylor crusher is used. The ore is thus crushed to stamping size in one reduction. The capacity of each crusher is about 40 tons per hr.; the power consumption is 0.6 kw. per ton.

At Ithaca Peak, one of three peaks situated on Duval Corporation's Mineral Park property, a 'Single pulse of quartz monzonite magma intruded the isoclinally folded Precambrian Cerbat complex consisting of schist, quartzfeldspar gneiss, and amphibolite. The magma reacted with the Precambrian rocks, yielding a quartz-diorite rim. As the magma crystallized within the rim, it produced, progressing in'ward, annular bodies of quartz monzonite porphyry, quartz porphyry, and a distinctive quartz porphyry containing abundant podiform, tabular, and irregular quartz masses. These quartz masses are spatially associated with discontinuous crenulate and tabular quartz veinlets. Following crystallization, the Ithaca Peak stock and part of the surrounding Cerbat complex were fractured, producing a stockwork of predominantly northwest and northeast-trending fractures. The stockwork was then mineralized during a period of decreasing temperature by: ( 1) quartz-pyritechalcopyrite veinlets without distinct selvages and with distinct alteration envelopes in which orthoclase was altered to quartz and sericite; (2) quartz-pyrite-chalcopyrite veins and veinlets with distinct selvages and without distinct alteration envelopes; and (3) pyrite-chalcopyrite- galena-sphalerite veins. The Ithaca Peak stock was pervasively sericitized or argillized. The Mineral Park property is surrounded by a zone of propylitization Alteration and mineralization are coextensive in space and were, at least in part, coincident in time. The Mineral Park property possibly was elevated and exposed twice prior to its present exposure. The protore has been enriched by a factor of three. The Ithaca Peak supergene ore body is conformable with present topography and lies above the present water table. The shape of the ore body was controlled by erosion and oxidation of the previously enriched mineralization. Hematite, goethite, and jarosite present at the surface indicate a high primary pyrite environment, but it is possible to recognize that a small proportion of veins and veinlets contained greater amounts of chalcocite and chalcopyrite than pyrite. The igneous facies on Ithaca Peak are the products of differentiation within a solidifying rim according to Bowen's Reaction series. The innermost facies contain more quartz and orthoclase than the outer facies. Late magmatic quartz in the case of Ithaca Peak contains small amounts of pyrite and molybdenite. It is suggested that this quartz-sulfide mineralization, may also have been the product of differentiation the product of differentiation, may indicate that the later hydrothermal mineralization may also have been the product of differentiation.
