THE following brief paper is submitted with a view to encouraging the exploitation of hitherto neglected 10w~ grade ore-bodies which are suitable for extraction by open-cut methods.The Corinthian North mine, situated 10 miles from Southern Cross, in the Yilgarn district of Western Australia, furnishes an example of low working costs, although operations are carried out on quite a limited scale.The body of quartz which is now being worked strikes N.W. and S.E., has a very slight underlie to the west, and lies between bodies of quartz-hrematite s,chist on the east and amphibolite on the west.So far as the property has been explored, it would appear that the underlying sulphide rises to within about 70 ft. of the surface in the northern end of the workings, and pitches away to the south at a grade...

Mine water management is often an afterthought in mine planning processes and can introduce significant risks to projects when studied as a stand alone component at a later stage in the mine design. Incorporation of a mine dewatering and pore pressure dissipation strategy in the early stages of mine planning is imperative in order to minimise constraints on the production schedule, to match designed pit slopes and maximise project value for an open cut mine option such as Olympic Dam. A risk-based mine planning approach was adopted during the project selection phase study whereby water management was introduced into mine planning, scheduling and the development of an operational strategy. Hydrological and hydrogeological studies and outputs were successfully integrated into the various iterations of the mine planning cycle during early selection phase to manage the potential water management risks associated with pit slope depressurisation and access to dry working conditions during rapid advancement of mining phases.An extensive network of vibrating wire piezometer sets and long-term depressurisation testing characterised aquifer conditions and demonstrated that hydraulic connectivity exists within the geological profile due to the presence of structures and resource drill holes which enhance vertical connectivity. This connectivity, along with underdrainage from mining activities contributes up to 100 m of depressurisation in low permeability units.A pit dewatering strategy incorporates the mine planning schedules and accounts for operational constraints as to the location and development of the dewatering wells, storages and pipelines. Numerical modelling generated a range of likely pit inflows and dewatering requirements with the average initial dewatering discharge likely to be 150 L/s and reduce quickly to 50 L/s after five years, depending on the premine schedule.Coupled hydrogeological and geotechnical assessments were also carried out as part of the mine planning cycle and indicate that successful dewatering will go a long way to reduce the pore pressures within key geotechnical units during the rapid mining phase where around 300 m of cover sequence is stripped in five years. However, the residual storage in the primary aquifer and the residual pore pressure in underlying low permeability units will need to be dissipated (in-pit horizontal holes) as the pit floor advances. Pit slope design angles are sensitive to depressurisation and dewatering and up to 70 per cent depressurisation of key geotechnical rock units are required. Whilst an accelerated program of aquifer dewatering supported by lithostatic unloading should drive rapid depressurisation in the lower permeability units, intervention is anticipated in key geotechnical units such as the Tregolana Shale and volcaniclastics. The extent of induced drainage will ultimately depend in part upon the mining rate and geotechnical stability requirements. Practical operability testing addressed the potential for operational constraints to mine depressurisation activities such as congestion and mining schedule development within the pit and identified that depressurisation drilling can be achieved even with reduced access availability. Mine operations and planning groups established design criteria and considered the likely inoperable periods following rainfall events of seven to 14 days to manage the base surge and minimise impact on production. In-pit surface water management options to minimise operational disruptions during and after significant rainfall events were estimated used a stochastic approach.

The corrosion behaviour of 304L stainless steel laser-cladded with various amounts of ruthenium (Ru) was evaluated in solutions of sulphuric acid and sulphuric acid plus sodium chloride at 25°C and 45°C by open-circuit potential and cyclic potentiodynamic polarization tests. In general, the addition of Ru to the stainless steel increased its corrosion resistance in 1 M H2SO4, as well as in 1 M H2SO4 plus 1 wt% NaCl. This was observed for a number of parameters such as corrosion rate, corrosion potential, open-circuit potential, and current density. However, increasing the amount of Ru added beyond a certain level did not result in further improvement in corrosion protection. For each environment there is an optimal Ru concentration for the best corrosion protection. For example, in 1 M H2SO4 at 25°C, 2.44 wt% Ru shows the least active surface in terms of corrosion. Further research into ruthenium coatings on stainless steels is recommended.

The mechanical properties of a low carbon low alloy steel in the austenite and _-ferrite regions have been examined by thermal-tensile tests using a Gleeble-1500D system at temperatures in the range 600oC to 1300oC and at a strain rate of 10-3/s; these being the conditions that apply to the unbending operation during the continuous casting of steel. The yield strength and tensile strength of steel decreased with increasing test temperature and the embrittlement zone occurred in the temperature range 800oC to 970oC. In the embrittlement zone, the fracture surfaces and microstructures of the tensile specimens were examined by scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the cause of the embrittlement at 950oC in which the minimum %R of A was around 36% is the second phase particles precipitated along the _ grain boundary during deformation leading to inter-granular brittle fracture.

The Maragorik Prospect represents a partially eroded Pliocene acid sulphate style epithermal gold system hosted within the Sigule Volcanics and Riet Bed sediments which is inferred to have formed from a degassing porphyry body at depth. A regional sinistral rotation provided by transform faults associated with the opening of the Manus Basin imparts a dilational character to mineralised NE trending faults formed parallel to the Warangoi Graben. A controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics (CSAMT) survey has identified E-W trending buried conductors which may represent alteration formed within dilation zones. While some gold mineralisation occurs within vuggy silica at Palang Hill, the target is auriferous enargite (luzonite)-bearing breccias from the LK1 and Gureki areas.

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks, held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. Platinum-group minerals (PGM) in the enriched zone at Dust Mountain occur in two separate parageneses, the first representing primary magmatic PGM and the second primary magmatic PGM that have been reduced to alloys during serpentinisation. Minerals in the first group were unaffected by hydrothermal alteration on account of their textural setting or stable chemical composition. Despite substantial alteration of the serpentinised assemblage, most evidence points to the dominant role of primary magmatic processes in determining PGM occurrence. Several base metals have nevertheless been introduced hydrothermally. With respect to surficial dispersion the single most important paragenetic factor was the reduction of sulphides to alloys, rendering them more susceptible to mechanical erosion and less so to chemical leaching. Coal is Australia’s highest export earner and Australia is the world’s largest exporter of coal. With coal now being extracted from deeper reserves under increased risk profile, and in the interest of aiding the stability of coal supplies, Japan is funding a number of safety projects in Australia and China. The CSIRO, Australia’s premiere research organisation with the country’s largest exploration and mining research group, are currently undertaking a jointly funded Japan-Australia safety project at Anglo Coal’s new Grasstree Colliery in central Queensland. The project, entitled Mine Communication and Information for Real-time Risk Analysis, will deliver step-change capabilities in data integration, decision support, gas monitoring, geo-technical monitoring, emergency response and personnel safety to the Grasstree Colliery. Some key activities include: developing and installing underground coal mine Ethernet LAN components, real-time monitoring of gas and geo-technical sensors, MODBUS serial to TCP/IP converters, e-reporting of underground conditions, emergency guidance systems and underground trials of Internet Protocol telephone and video. The project seeks to integrate (in real time) key data sets from the comprehensive and diversified range of propriety system currently in use at mines (ventilation, strata, operations e.g. haulage, pumps, conveyors etc) into a single integrated risk management interface. This interface will filter the data through a rules-based inference engine that will cross reference the various data streams, compare with past events and outcomes associated with the similar historical data and present this “intelligence” to

Fine coal particles have been examined with respect to dustiness and its connection with various physical and chemical properties. It appears that a given coal will tend to be dusty ifthe moisture content is low and if the inert maceral content and overall rank are high. The hydrophobicity ofa coking coal (Young-Wallsend) and a steaming coal (Blair Athol) was examined in detail by a dynamic contact angle technique. The YoungWallsend coal had a higher contact angle, on average, than the Blair Athol sample. This result has important implications for dust suppression and associated processes.

"Since the 1980s, China has become the predominant producer of REEs. Recently, it introduced REE export quotas and this started a world-scale REE exploration rush. REE resources are concentrated in carbonatite-related deposits, peralkaline igneous rocks, pegmatites, REE ± P veins, ion adsorption clays, placers, and some deep ocean sediments. REEs could also be derived as a by-product of phosphate fertilizer, U processing, Ti-Zr-bearing placers, and exploitation of Olympic Dam-type sub-type of IOCG deposits. The ideal REE development target would be located in a politically stable jurisdiction such as Canada. REE grade and tonnage, mineralogy, and permissive metallurgy are some of the key technical factors that could be used to screen projects. INTRODUCTIONAccording to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), the term “rare earth elements” (REEs) encompasses yttrium (Y), scandium (Sc), and the lanthanide series: lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), praseodymium (Pr), neodymium (Nd), promethium (Pm), samarium (Sm), europium (Eu), gadolinium (Gd), terbium (Tb), dysprosium (Dy), holmium (Ho), erbium (Er), thulium (Tm), ytterbium (Yb), and lutetium (Lu). This definition is used throughout this paper.REEs are subdivided into light (LREE) and heavy (HREE) categories. LREEs include, Sc, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, and Gd and HREE include Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, and Y. Promethium (Pm) does not occur in nature. Concentrations of individual LREEs in the upper crust of the Earth are comparable to those of base metals. Even the least abundant REE (Lu) is about 200 times more abundant than gold.The production of REEs, reported in the form of oxides (REOs), for 2011 is estimated at 140 000 t (Figure 1a). Although high technology industries can substitute several REEs with other materials, these substitutes are typically more expensive or less effective than the REEs they replace. A number of countries, including the United States, consider several REEs essential for national security, their economy, and a general reduction in green house gas emissions. The forecasted demand for individual LREOs is much higher than that of HREOs (Figure 2). Dy, Eu, Tb, Nd, and Y are essential for the US economy and subject to predicted supply disruptions (U.S. Department of Energy, 2010)."

Pumpable roof supports provide an alternative approach to secondary support in underground mining. Unlike all other supports that are either partially or fully prefabricated prior to being transported into the mine, the pumpable support is fabricated in place in the mine entry. This reduces the underground material handling efforts and thus the injuries historically associated with in-mine support construction. On-site fabrication also facilitates application of the support in areas that are inaccessible to transportation equipment such as scoops or rail cars, making it ideal for many bleeder applications. One of the main advantages of the pumpable support is that it fully bridges from the mine floor to the roof, thereby eliminating the requirement of ?topping off? the support with wooden wedges or crib blocks that soften most other support responses. This report examines the development of modern pumpable roof support technology and provides a full description of the performance capabilities of each of the support products now on the market.

This report presents the results of a study for the Bureau of Mines to compare loan terms for non-fuel mineral projects in developing countries, from various International Financial Institutions (IFIs), and from private sector commercial sources. The study compares IFI and commercial loan terms for seven mineral projects in developing countries. The International Financial Institutions represented are: ? International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) ? International Finance Corporation (IFC) ? Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) ? Asian Development Bank (ADB) ? International Monetary Fund (IMF) In addition, the costs of financing for these mineral projects were compared with the costs of long-term debt to the five largest U.S. mineral producers.

Zeolites were first recognized as a new group of minerals by Cronstedt with the discovery of stilbite in 1756. The word zeolite was coined from the two Greek words meaning "to boil" and "a stone" because of the loss of water when heated in the mineralogist's blow pipe. (1) In 1845 it was discovered that certain soils have the power of retaining ammonium Salts. (2) These were the first ion exchange experiments. Later it was discovered that it was the hydrated silicates in the soil that produced this phenomenon and several years later a paper was published dealing with the action of dilute salt solutions on silicates which showed that this base exchange principal, which we now call cation exchange, is reversible. The quantitative cation exchange behavior of zeolite minerals, such as chabazite, was studied. As a result any aluminosilicate which exhibited the property of ion exchange was referred to as a "zeolite;" even today the term has been applied to clay minerals as well as synthetic organic ion exchange resins.

The CTRL London Tunnels The Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) London Tunnels comprise 36km of internal diameter bores that were driven by Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). The tunnels were constructed between the autumn of 2002 and the spring of 2004. The permanent works also included the 1.1 km long station box at Stratford, five ventilation shafts of depths between 30 and 54 m, 29 cross passages and various large diameter sprayed concrete lined connecting tunnels. "The magnetite-rich Heff Cu-Au skarn lies in the Quesnel Terrane of south-central British Columbia, approximately 26 km northeast of Kamloops. The skarn formed close to the northern margin of the Heffley Creek pluton, and is hosted by Carnian (Late Triassic) Nicola Group limestone. The Late Triassic pluton (208.1 ± 6.1 Ma, U-Pb zircon) is a composite body of alkaline affinity that includes dioritic, gabbroic, and magnetite-rich clinopyroxene ± olivine ultramafic phases.The skarn has been discontinuously traced along strike for more than 1 km, and individual skarn layers are up to 40 m thick. The most common non-opaque minerals are garnet, clinopyroxene, and carbonate, with lesser epidote, biotite, amphibole, and chlorite. Apatite locally forms more than 3 vol.% of the rock. Compositionally the garnet is a low Mn grandite averaging Pyr3-Grs41-Adr56 mol.%.Mineralization consists of lenses, up to 10 m thick, containing massive low Ti-V magnetite (avg. 0.03 wt.% TiO2 and 0.01 wt.% V2O3). Magnetite is associated with up to 20 vol.% pyrrhotite, lesser pyrite, and trace chalcopyrite and gold. There is a moderate enrichment in rare earth elements with assays up to 570 ppm La and 490 ppm Ce. The Heffley Creek pluton belongs to a suite of Late Triassic-Early Jurassic alkalic and Fe-rich intrusions that are widely developed throughout the Quesnel Terrane. Some host Cu-Au porphyry mineralization, but less commonly they are associated with magnetite-apatite veins such as at the Glen Iron mine and Magnet occurrence, or with magnetite-rich Cu-Au skarns such as the Heff occurrence.Although abundant low Ti magnetite is present in the Heff skarn, it does not appear to represent iron oxide copper- gold (IOCG) type mineralization. Microprobe analyses completed during this study show that low Ti magnetite is not a unique feature of IOCG deposits, but also characterizes some other types of hydrothermal mineralization. In British Columbia these include some alkalic porphyry-related magnetite-apatite veins in the Quesnel Terrane, as well as the well-known Wrangellia-hosted Fe skarn deposits. Thus, low Ti magnetite appears to be a common signature of many magmatic hydrothermal deposits in contrast to the high Ti primary magnetite found in most igneous rocks."

For the extension of the Paper Mill of Parenco in Renkum, the Netherlands, the application of a pile foundation was required. The demands for this pile foundation were very explicit a vibration free and soil displacing pile systems with low allowable settlement. Another important aspect was the total amount of piles (originally over 1600 auger piles) which had to be executed within 3 months, in very difficult and unhomogeneous soil. Based upon these conditions the Tubex Grout Injection Pile was chosen to be used for this project. This system involves the drilling of a steel tube with a conical pile shoe while grout is injected at the point simultaneously, creating a mixed-in-place layer around the tube. INTRODUCTION After extensive marketing, the board of directors of Parenco, decided to a large extension of the production capacity of its paper mill by building a new production building called Paper Mill 1 or PM-1. The new PM-1 extension had to be constructed beside the existing PM-2 because of limited terrain. The site is located right between the Rhine river and Renkum, approximately 15 kilometers (10 miles) west from Arnhem (see figure 1). The construction involved the building of the PM-1 extension of approximately 250 meters (820 ft.) long by 40-60 metres wide (130-200 ft.). The main structure was to be constructed of precast concrete beams and columns.

The demonstrations of the "Silent Sentry" by Union Carbide Corp. in 1957 and of a special tractor-plow by Allis-Chalmers in 1959 ushered in the technology era of fuel cells. The idea for direct conversion of chemical to electrical energy, first published in 1801 by Davy in England and Ritter in Germany, has been kept alive by a few people through 150 years: Grove built the first hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell in 1839; Mond and Langer made electrolyte contributions around 1890 that are still used today; Baur worked on coal-based cells from 1900; Bacon started his work in the '30's, which resulted in the first multi-kilowatt unit in the '50's; Davtyan studied molten-salt electrolytes in the '40's, followed by Ketelaar in the '50's; and Justi developed highly active electrodes in the '50's, to name only some of the pioneers. Despite the tremendous increase in research and development of fuel cells, these direct energy converters are still in their infancy. They will find their functional application in space, where power density must be maximized and product water utilized. These early systems will provide valuable experience in system engineering and reliability.

"The theory of flocculation usually is in a state of flux, involves many diverse phenomena, and is complex and sometimes contradictory in details. Instead of attempting a general discourse, I shall discuss selected observations made at our Stamford Laboratories, which impinge on theoretical aspects in two somewhat distinct areas of flocculation. Since some of you many not be familiar with flocculation, and :.n order that we all attach the same meaning to the jargon used, I first would like to review briefly a generalized picture of what goes on.Assume we have a suspension of particles in water, with a distribution in the sizes of particles. The surfaces of the particles interact to some extent with the water--· tending to alter the extent of hydration, may generate some ion exchange, all being somewhat variable with time--developing a surface condition which is very complex in details. We refer to this suspension as the ""substrate.""In the usual situation, if the suspension is allowed to stand quietly, the large particles settle out first, with somewhat smaller particles settling more slowly, and then there is a portion of very fine material which takes a long time or doesn't settle out at all. This resistance to settling t~ the very fine particles results from many factors, but all relate back to the size and density of the particles, to their surface properties, and to the other components in the aqueous suspending medium."

Construction contracts in the USA contain the clause "Value Engineering" ? an interesting and curious clause allowing contractor initiated design changes. Misleading is the interpretation of value engineering implying cost saving and sharing with the owner, and curious is the timing, just before beginning of actual construction. It is not surprising that such a clause would simply be ignored, because it involves change, often major design changes in very short time; and change is feared, moreover, it is vehemently resisted by all parties, owner, designer, contractor. The problem in the USA may lie in the divergence and separation of the two entities: Designer/Engineer and Builder/Contractor, assigned to the "one" engineering project. The priorities and incentives of these two groups are very different. The Engineer spends years, even decades, in design and prepares contract drawings often without a deep understanding of construction methods. Worse, with all the time available to him and in our era of tremendous advances in computational methods and speed, the designer turns in plans that are inexcusably exaggerated code-based design with excessive safety factors. As to the Contractor, he builds, often without appreciation of design principles or regard for design engineers. Redesign to apply a new technology or optimization of an inferior design just before construction becomes unthinkable. It is not surprising that adverse and hostile relationship between the designer and the contractor is a norm with extended disputes and claims, not to mention the cost these entail. Surprisingly, "Value Engineering" was successfully implemented in record speed on several very large projects in the metropolitan New York area. The process of change was unconventional, painful, and even comical. Four case studies are presented: two Design/Build: the 1.2 billion dollars Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Transit System in New Jersey and the 90 million dollars MTA Bus Depot in Manhattan, and two Conventional Design/Bid/Build: the 90 million dollars Queens Boulevard Bridge and the 150 million dollars Long Island Expressway.

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. Ore deposition was related to three major stages: continental rifting and separation (Vendian-Late Cambrian), convergence (Late Cambrian-Early Silurian) and collision (Early Silurian-Devonian). The first stage included deposition of volcanogenic massive sulphide Zn-Cu and stratabound or stratiform Fe and Zn-Pb(-Cu) on continental margins, as well as less economic Nb and Fe in carbonatites, U, Mo, Ni and V in Alum Shales and orthomagmatic Cr, Fe-Ti and Ni(-Cu). The numerous volcanogenic massive sulphides formed during convergence included Early Ordovician Cu-Zn, mature-arc Cu, Zn, Pb and Fe-oxide deposits, Besshi-type deposits dominated by Cu or Zn in gabbro-intruded sediments and minor Cu-Ni(-PGE), Cu-Mo and skarn deposits. The collisional stage is represented by epigenetic deposits including sandstone Pb deposits (Pb, Zn, Ba, F and Cu) and minor vein deposits with variable Au, Ag, Pb, Cu, Zn, Fe, As, Sb, W and Mo
