Molybdenum alloys with good strength properties at elevated temperatures were produced by the powder metallurgical internal oxidation method previously applied to tungsten and known as oxyreaction strengthening. Commercial molybdenum powders were blended with 0 to 10 pet of a reactive powder, ZrMo2. The effects of composition, blending procedure, and sintering conditions on strength properties at elevated temperatures were studied. Strengthening was attributed to zirconium in solid solution with molybdenum and to the presence of submicrometer particles of Zr02. Several alloys had tensile strength and stress-rupture properties com-parable with those of the best commercial alloys. The maximum tensile strengths obtained were 92 kpsi at 1,200° C and 53 kpsi at 1,316° C. The maximum stress-rupture life at 30 kpsi and 1,200° C was 145 hours.

The Mineral Processing Plant Design, Practice and Control Conference was held from Oct. 20through 24, 2002, at the Fairmont Hotel, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The conference was attended by nearly 400 of the world’s top mineral-processing specialists, including plant-design engineers, mineral-processing consultants, academics, suppliers and equipment manufacturers. The meeting was sponsored by SME and cosponsored by the Canadian Mineral Processing Division of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). The conference covered all aspects of mineral-processing design, construction and operation. The meeting included more than 130 technical presentations. Topics included sampling programs, feasibility studies, design criteria, process technologies, construction, start-up operations and shutdowns. To stimulate interaction and discussion throughout the five-day conference, the sessions were presented consecutively. Attendees had the opportunity to attend every session.

The flotation of fine coal (minus 0.5 mm) often requires the addition of an insoluble hydrocarbon collector to apparently promote the adhesion of coal particles to air bubbles. A series of experiments was conducted using a radiotracer and narrow size fractions of clean coal to determine the effect of particle size distribution, collector addition rate, desliming of feed and emuIisification of collector on the distribution of collector between the different size fractions. The concentration of collector per gram of each size fraction was found to be approximately proportional to (average particle size)-2 except if the collector was emulsified prior to addition, the dependence altered to approximately (average particle size)-1. Mechanistic consequences are discussed.

The Gippsland Basin is unique in Australia in that it is a major resource based industry centre within a sensitive and special environmental context supplying Melbourne, a major urban/industrial environment with most of its energy 'on-line'. The environmental effects of the supply systems are generally local and mostly affect only those who are directly or indirectly dependent on the upstream systems. The major urban metropolis which is served remains largely unaware of the environmental impacts of the system upon which it is dependent, except when specific attention is drawn to them as in the case of the Latrobe Valley Outfall, algal blooms in the Gippsland Lakes, etc. This paper discusses the environmental context within which the energy industries operate, the environmental legislative framework which applies, the likely environmental impacts and some solutions. The energy resources of the Gippsland Basin occur in an area where the physical environment exhibits a wide variety of inherent energy states in its physical and biological regimes. The off-shore regions of the oil and gas platforms has to be able to withstand the wind and wave energy generated in a shallow sea in a confined waterway lying athwart the main current and climatic stream. The coastline includes the delicately balanced quiescent environments of Corner Inlet with its 'wilderness' tourism industry and the powerful surf and long shore drift and dunes of Ninety Mile Beach.

In spite of the increasingly polarized and politicized view of climate science and climate change in the United States, many of the principles behind the ?theory? of Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) or Global Climate Change (GCC) are in fact firmly established both in fundamental physics and detailed observations and are widely accepted elsewhere. The discovery of the earth?s ?greenhouse effect? dates back nearly 200 years to the work of French mathematician and physicist Joseph Fourier in 1824 and 1827. In 1872, John Tyndall an English physicist and mountaineer, described the capacity of various gasses to absorb radiant heat. He identified water vapor and carbon dioxide as the principal ?greenhouse? gasses. The work of Fourier and Tyndall was the foundation for the theory that increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere might be responsible for an increase in global temperatures developed by the brilliant Swedish chemist Svante August Arrhenius in 1896. This was backed up by the additional work of Gilbert Callendar in the 1930s, and Gilbert Plass, Hans Suess and Roger Revelle in the 1950s. There is little scientific dispute about the physics by which this occurs: carbon dioxide in the atmosphere absorbs long wave radiation that would otherwise escape into space, thus warming the lower atmosphere and respective temperatures worldwide. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), approximately 2500 climate scientists from around the world, has concluded that increases in carbon dioxide resulting principally from the burning of fossil fuels are responsible for most of the continuing increases in global temperatures (IPCC, 2007). NASA?s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) states; ?The ten warmest years all occur within the 12-year period 1997-2008? (GISS, 2009). 2009 was the second warmest year on record and 2010 was tied with 2005 for the warmest year on record (GISS, 2010, 2011). The science is in fact settled; the earth has not cooled since 1998 as some have claimed. It continues to warm as evidenced by not only surface temperature records but also ocean temperature records as well as changes in physical and biological systems (IPCC, 2007).

To improve rock-burst control in deep vein mining, a field demonstration has been carried out by the Bureau of Mines to test a new rock-burst control concept--rock preconditioning in advance of mining. The procedure is to fracture the major rock-burst-prone zone during the development of each level before production mining. This allows initial mining to begin in a preconditioned zone and later mining from the level below to end in a prefractured or preconditioned pillar zone that is relatively burst-free. This full-scale field demonstration was carried out On the 7700 level of the Hecla Mining Co.'s Star-Morning mine. An expected burst-prone zone along the main vein between 7 and 10 crosscuts, some 250 feet long by 40 feet above and below the level, was preconditioned by blasting a fanlike ring of drilled holes from each crosscut. The drill holes, up to 100 feet long and 4 inches in diameter, were loaded with high explosives and shot. About 4,550 feet of drilling and 9,000 pounds of explosives were involved in the effort. Comparison of preshot and postshot data from monitoring instrumentation indicated that the blasting did fracture the rock in the planned zone and did result in an immediate stress decrease and softening of rock. The field data compared favorably with predicted results from a finite-element computer model simulation of the destressing. Based on observations made during mining and on the data from the Hecla rock-burst monitoring system, there is no doubt that this preconditioning in advance of mining demonstration resulted in much-improved rock-burst control during first-floor mining. It was also concluded that preconditioning the vein was more effective than preconditioning the wall rock.

Models are used in engineering to reproduce reality as faithfully as possible so that the expected response of a system for given actions or inputs can be determined. In the field of rock engineering, both empirically based and numerical models are widely used to determine the likely response of the rock surrounding excavations. Many of the empirical models are developed from statistical analysis of case histories or from direct observation; however, empirical models are limited because they should be used only within the range of conditions of the observational database. Synergy exists between empirical and numerical models, because empirical models can be used to calibrate and validate numerical models. The empirical approach can benefit from the capability of numerical models to investigate specific mechanisms, which would not be possible using observations alone. Two cases are presented in which the synergy between empirical and numerical models is demonstrated. The first case examines the analysis of discontinuity effects on the strength of slender pillars in limestone mines, and the second case evaluates the effects of stress orientation on coal mine entry stability. It is concluded that numerical model calibration and verification comprises an important first stage in the successful application of models in rock engineering design. Application of numerical models allows mechanisms and interactions of various parameters to be analysed, greatly improving the understanding of the system. The improved understanding can be used to extend the application of empirical design methods, resulting in improved safety and efficiency of rock engineering designs.

Anatolia Minerals Development Limited (AMDL) is constructing the Çöpler Gold Project in eastern Turkey and commenced mining in the fourth quarter of 2009 with gold production scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2010. The project is a 15,500 tonnes/day oxide heap leach with three-stage crushing, agglomeration, carbon adsorption and electrowinning for final metal recovery. Leach solution copper levels are expected to be relatively low during the first two years of production but will increase in later years due to higher copper content in the mined and processed ore. Over the mine life approximately 40 million tones of ore will be placed on the leach pad, which will contain about 35,000 tonnes of copper. Metallurgical testing indicates copper extraction will vary by ore type and, if controls are not implemented, may lead to copper levels exceeding 1,000 mg/L in pregnant solution. High copper levels in leach solution have the deleterious effect of increasing cyanide consumption and potentially overwhelming the ability of the carbon circuit to effectively adsorb the principal economic metals, which in this case are gold and silver. Using data obtained from laboratory leach column testwork, the heap leach facility was modeled using METSIM process simulation software to estimate the build-up of copper in leach solution over the mine life. Laboratory testwork was also performed to evaluate process conditions for treating a portion of pregnant leach solution via sulfide addition to precipitate saleable copper as copper sulfide (Cu2S).

This report is the third of a series on convergence of roof and floor in coal mines and subsidence of surface that accompanies it. The first paper5/ dealt with extraction in a mechanized mine (Montour 10) having relatively short rib lines that retreat rapidly. The second dealt with extraction in a mine (Crucible) in which coal was loaded. by hand and in which the rib lines wore long and slow-moving. The present report deals with a mine (Gibson) in which conditions approximated those in the Crucible mine, except that the distance between room centers was considerably less and the pillars were narrower in consequence. Moreover, the average cover was less and the studies were made under the steep hillside of a stream valley compared with a gently rolling surface over the portions of the second mine studied. Gibson mine lies in the east-central hart of Washington County, Pa. , approximately midway between the Montour 10 end Crucible mines on a north-south line. A cooperative agreement covering the work was made with the Hillman Coal & Coke Co. through W. L. Affelder, vice president. This paper describes the methods used in the investigation, gives excerpts from the data obtained, and offers such generalizations as appear to be justified.

There were no significant changes in the mineral industries of the smaller Caribbean Islands during 1980. Imported petroleum requirements continued to erode economic gains that may have occurred in other sectors. Some relief may be forthcoming as more qualified Caribbean countries take advantage of Trinidad and Tobago's petroleum product financing program (see Trinidad and Tobago). There were no crude oil discoveries in these areas during 1980, although some geophysical testing around the British Virgin Islands and Antigua war underway. In March 1980, the Government of Antigua sold a 75% interest in the 16,000-barrel- per-day West Indies Oil Co. refinery to the Swiss Intermaritime Bank and Intermaritime Management Services for $6 million. The new refinery company is called the National Petroleum Co. Shutdown since 1976, it was originally planned for the refinery to reopen in 1980, but refurbishing has proved to be more extensive than anticipated. The reopening is now expected in 1981.

Analysis of seed numbers present in topsoils (a grazed area, an ungrazed area, and two stockpiles) indicated that seeds of the most prevalent colonizers (e.g., Kochia scoparla, Setaria virdis, and Salsolo collins) were not present in the topsoil upon respreading but rather appeared by immigration from the surrounding areas. The grazed site had a seed density of over 7,700 seeds m-2 (of which 43% were from weedy species) and the ungrazed site had 3,900 seeds m-2 (of which 7% were weeds); the stockpiled topsoils had very low seed densities (255 and 520 seeds m-2). Seed densities and diversity decreased with depth on both the grazed and ungrazed sites; this was especially true on the grazed site where 94% of the seeds were found in the surface 7.5 cm. Several species were present in the seed bank (e.g., Hedeoma hispida, Artemesia ludoviciana, A. frigida, and A, abslnthlum) which were also found on the three and four year old mined sites in the aboveground vegetation survey. Seeds from these species may germinate after several years of dormancy, thereby starting populations on mined sites and enhancing plant diversity. Seed bank analysis was also undertaken on mined sites ranging in age of 2 to 6 years (plus an unmined site). Mined site seed densities ranged from 1630 to 3980 seeds m-2, with the four year old site having the greatest density (largely because of high Melilotus spp. populations); unmined site and stockpiled topsoil sample had lower seed densities. A significant positive correlation between total viable seed content and soil-water saturation percentage indicated that soil texture may influence seed viability/ dormancy (the. finer the material, the higher the seed population). As with the previous part of this study (and other studies), there was a poor correlation between the aboveground flora and the belowground seed composition.

The effectiveness of an industry?s safety activities can be gaged best by the accident records of that industry. In an effort to gage conditions in the petroleum industry, and with the objective of helping to reduce the number of accidents in it, the Bureau of Mines from time to time has tabulated, analyzed, and published pertinent statistical information3/. These reports have dealt with distribution, causes, and costs and related phases of accidents for various and collective divisions of the petroleum industry in several sections of the country. This type of study aids the personnel of the Bureau in planning the course of its activities in accident-prevention work and gives useful data to persons engaged or interested in the promotion of safety in the petroleum industry, which will aid them in their efforts to reduce the number and severity of accidents. A majority of petroleum operators and ?service" contractors have acknowledged their responsibility to provide their employees with safe working conditions and to their stockholders for greater economic value of invested capital by establishing safety divisions within their respective organizations. Such divisions have a primary duty, namely, to see that properly designed and guarded machinery and working equipment are furnished the employees and that they are trained in the safest practical methods of performing their work. "Antiscalants were evaluated for control of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in gold processing applications. Under severely supersaturated conditions, 100 percent inhibition was achieved with 30 ppm antiscalant. Laboratory and field testing established that an antiscalant could both inhibit scale buildup and remove an estimated 0.5 kg/m2 per annum of pre-existing scale. A program was developed to control CaCO3 at a gold mill experiencing severe scale buildup. Annual accumulation of as much as 3 cm of scale in process piping was reduced to unmeasureable levels when 10 ppm antiscalant was applied. No scale-related upsets in mill operation occurred during a five-month trial period.INTRODUCTION Inorganic mineral scale is a crystalline deposit that forms when dissolved mineral constituents exceed the solubility of the respective mineral phase. Formation of mineral scale adversely affects a wide range of industries and is of particular interest in mining and metals processing. Scale affects numerous stages of metal extraction processes. Restricted flow in piping, nozzles, valves, screens, pumps and other components used to transport mineral slurries, metal concentrates, and tailings as well as scale in millwater and thickener overflow circuits are primary concerns (Alfano & Boffardi, 1994). Heap leaching, comminuation, flotation, vat leaching, carbon adsorption, and heat exchangers as well as oxidation steps used in processing sulfidic ores are among key unit operations that may be adversely affected (Simmons & Gathje, 2003). Antiscalant chemicals are designed to prevent formation and growth of mineral scales such as CaCO3. These chemicals, which include two primary classes – phosphonates and anionic carboxylate polymers and copolymers - are added to the gold processing stream at low parts-per-million (ppm) concentrations to interfere with nucleation and growth of scale forming crystals and to disperse fine particulate material. Application points may be located throughout the gold extraction process. Evaluation of the performance of antiscalants plays a critical role in determining the best product for a specific application. Performance evaluations include laboratory testing, pilot scale studies, in-plant trials, and ongoing performance monitoring during mill operation."

The gasification of lump coke with CO2 was studied in a fixed-bed reactor. The effective diffusivity of the gas was evaluated from measurements of the reactivity of the lump coke, produced by BHP Steel in New South Wales, and from kinetic parameters that were determined from the reactivity of fine grains. The grain model of effective diffusion in porous media was adopted to express the gasification rate of the lump coke and was found to fit the experimental data well. Experimental results are presented for the anode overvoltage as a function of current density for different alumina concentrations in an alumina reduction cell. Voltage changes due to the electrolyte resistance and also the decomposition voltage, have been evaluated as a function of alumina concentration and anode current density. From these values of voltage, changes in the total cell voltage have been derived for changes in alumina concentration for different anode current densities. The results show that for each operating current density there exists a discrete alumina concentration that defines a minimum reduction cell voltage. Systematic leakage surveys of natural-gas transmission lines not only aid in the conservation of gas, but can be made to show direct financial returns of large magnitude. 1. Such surveys reveal the actual leakage from the lines, and indicate repairs to be made in order, to eliminate unnecessary waste. 2. Tests on lines, after repairs are made, show the actual saving that has been accomplished. 3. Tests on newly constructed lines reveal the presence of leakage that should be eliminated before the lines are put into service.

Pilot Hole ?X? was drilled to test the formations through which the ventilation shaft for the proposed U.S.B.M. demonstration oil shale mine will be drilled. Five permeability tests were performed at various stratigraphic levels within this hole. The test method used was that of pumping fluids out of the hole for three hours, using the air lift method, followed by a three-hour period where the recharge was observed. Transmissivity and permeability results were determined from these test data. The test procedure used is described and supporting data for the hydrologic tests are provided.

Zincite and spinel phases are present in the complex slag systems encountered in zinc/lead sintering and zinc smelting processes. These phases form extensive solid solutions and are stable over a wide range of compositions, temperatures and oxygen partial pressures. Accurate information on the stability of these phases is required in order to develop thermodynamic models of these slag systems. Phase equilibria in the Fe-Zn-O system have been experimentally studied for a range of conditions, between 900 and 1580°C and oxygen partial pressures (pO2) between air and metallic iron saturation, using equilibration and quenching techniques. The compositions of the phases were measured using Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPMA). The ferrous and ferric bulk iron concentrations were determined using a specially developed wet-chemical analysis procedure based on the use of ammonium metavanadate. XRD was used to confirm phase identification. A procedure was developed to overcome the problems associated with evaporation of zinc at lowpO2s and to ensure the achievement of equilibria. An isothermal section of the system FeO-Fe2O3-ZnO at high ZnO concentrations at 1200°C was constructed. The maximum solubilities of iron and zinc in zincite and spinel phases in equilibrium were determined at pO2=1*10-6atm at 1200and 1300°C. The morphology of the zincite crystals sharply changes in air between 1200 and 1300°C from rounded to plate-like. This is shown to be associated with significant increase in total iron concentration, the additional iron being principally in the form of ferric iron. Calculations performed by Fact Sage with a thermodynamically optimized database have been compared with the experimental results. This article presents possibilities of reducing methane emission to the atmosphere in working mines in Jastrzebie Coal Company by means of proecological solution. They form a new approach towards the problem of rational and effective use of natural resources both in economical and environmental respect. Power and thermal energy for underground air conditioning in mining excavations are produced from the methane, which is drained out of the mine for safety reasons.
