Increased employment and a lower accident-frequency rate were the outstanding features of the metal- and nonmetal-mining4 industries of the United States in 1939 compared with 1933, according to reports furnished by individual mining companies to the Bureau of Vines, United States Department of the Interior. Except for 1937, the reports for 1939 showed gains both in number of employees and number of mar -hours worked over all years since 1929. The accident-frequency rate per million man-hours of exposure to mining hazards was lower than in any year since 1925. Reports for 1939 revealed a total of 111,909 men employed in and about mines, an increase of inure than 8 percent over 1931 The total volume of labor performed at all mires was slightly more than 299 million plan-hours, an increase of mare than 10 percent over 1938. As these gains suggest, the average employee had a longer period of work in 1939, the increase amounting to r workdays per employee.

The Duluth Gabbro Complex in Northeastern Minnesota possibly contains a significant domestic copper resource and the nation's largest nickel resource. Exploration has discovered large low-grade copper-nickel (Cu-Ni) deposits between Hoyt Lakes and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA). The mining and processing of Cu-Ni will have environmental, economic, and social impacts. The purpose of this study is to relate major environmental, economic, and social considerations to various aspects of Cu-Ni extraction. An open pit and two underground (block caving and open stoping with backfilling) models were developed to generate information on the impact of Cu-Ni extraction. Important considerations having environmental, economic, and social impacts (luring various aspects of Cu-Ni extraction are identified and defined. These aspects are exploration, development, mining, beneficiating, smelting, transportation, and termination of operations. Considerations are grouped into the general categories of site, industrial, energy, climatic, resource, water, air emission, waste disposal, employee, tax and royalty, transportation, and community considerations. Cu-Ni extraction in Northeastern Minnesota presents major environmental, economic, and social risks. Decisions are required on trade-offs between adverse and beneficial impacts. The approach used in this study assists in assessing environmental, economic, and social impacts. It will aid in the examination of potential and projected short-term and long-term advantages and disadvantages and will aid in the development of Minnesota's Cu-Ni resource for the maximum benefit to society.

Two-phase (water and air) flow in a self aerated WEMCO flotation machine has been investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A 0.8 m3 model is considered. The flow is modeled by Euler-Euler approach, and transport equations are solved using a commercial software ANSYS-CFX5 [1]. Because of the lack of circumferential periodicity in this machine, the entire machine is modeled and unsteady simulations are conducted in the whole volume of the bulb. Uniform bubble diameter is specified, and the effects of bubble diameter are determined by conducting simulations for three diameters of 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0 mm. The unsteady air flow rate through the machine is predicted as an outcome of the simulations. Air volume fraction contours and velocity field in different parts of the machine are presented and discussed.

In 2005, Black & Veatch Corporation began designing a raw water conveyance system for San Luis Obispo County from Lake Nacimiento to the city of San Luis Obispo. The first element of the water transfer system will be a raw water pump station and lake tap. The wet well of the pump station will consist of a concrete lined shaft approximately 180 feet deep constructed in the very incompetent sandstone of the Vacqueros Formation. The lake will be wet tapped at approximately 172 feet below grade using a slurry earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine. The 48 to 72-inch finished diameter microtunnel will be approximately 500 feet in length. Construction is scheduled to begin in the winter of 2007.

This report is one of a series covering the mineral resources of the Nation. It briefly describes most of the known tungsten deposits in Gila, Yavapai, and Mohave Counties, Ariz. Many of the descriptions are taken from the reports of previous examinations by Bureau of Mines engineers, and from Defense Minerals Exploration Administration files. Where a previous examination had been made, and an inquiry disclosed that little or no work had been done since that time, pertinent information from the report was used in this paper with acknowledgment of the source. However, the majority of the descriptions is from field examinations by the author. In the past 3 years (July 1956-May 1959) only necessary annual assessment work was conducted on nearly all the properties described in this paper. There was no active mining on any of the properties examined.

The Drainage Services Department (DSD) of the Hong Kong SAR Government commissioned the design and construction of the West Kowloon Drainage Improvement, Stage 2, Phase 2, Kai Tak Transfer Scheme (KTTS) project in 2000 to relieve potential flooding in Mong Kok caused by the insufficient capacity of the existing storm water drainage system. The KTTS involves construction of a 1.5km,4.4m drainage tunnel and a 450m long box culvert, running from Waterloo Road near Hereford Road to the existing Kai Tak Nullah in San Po Kong. This paper describes the design and construction of; the bored tunnel through both hard rock and soft ground using a slurry Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), six associated access shafts, a connection structure at Waterloo Road and the box culvert connecting the bored tunnel to the outfall at Kai Tak nullah. Details will be provided on the contractor’s alternative designs adopted during the contract including the use of fibre reinforced shotcrete as one-pass temporary and permanent support for three of the shafts and modifications to the Engineer’s design for the box culvert structure.

"Until recently, liquefaction-related studies concentrated on clean sands believing that only sands are susceptible to liquefaction. However, a few earthquakes like 1976 Tangshan earthquake, the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the 1999 Kocaeli earthquake, the 2010 Chile earthquake, and the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, etc. showed that sand with fines could also liquefy. The research findings on liquefaction of silty soils are limited, and several structures constructed on such soil deposits are damaged during the past earthquakes. Some previous results of research on earthquake events show an increase of liquefaction resistance in silt soils with increase the fines content, but some report the opposite trend. This study presents the results based on undrained triaxial cyclic tests which were carried out on the fine sand with fines (0%, 10%, 20% and 40% fines). The samples were prepared at the required unit weight (Dr = 50%) and saturated by using back pressure and cell pressure increments. Each consolidated sample is subjected to cyclic loading with sinusoidal wave load form at a frequency of 1 Hz. The liquefaction resistance is evaluated in terms of cyclic stress ratio required to cause 100% pore pressure or 20% failure strain occur at 15 numbers of load cycles. Results are presented in forms of pore pressure build up and axial strain propagation plots. As the fines content increased, an increase in liquefaction potential was observed.INTRODUCTIONLiquefaction and related phenomenon have been responsible for tremendous amounts of damage all around the world. In general, the liquefaction may occur in fully saturated sands, silts and low plastic clays. When the saturated soil mass is subjected to seismic or dynamic loads, there is a sudden buildup of pore water within a short duration, and it could not dissipate which leads to reducing the effective shear strength of soil mass. In this state, the soil mass behaves like a liquid and causes large deformations, settlements, flow failures, etc. This phenomenon is called soil liquefaction. As a result, the ability of soil deposit to support the foundations of buildings, bridges, dams, etc. is reduced. Liquefiable soil also exerts a higher pressure on retaining walls.This lateral movement of soil could cause settlement of the retained soil. A sudden build-up of pore water pressure during quake also triggers landslides. Liquefaction damages of structures are commonly observed in low-lying areas near the rivers, lakes, and oceans."

In a continental environment, sediment mobilisation, dispersion and deposition are mainly controlled by mass gravity and streamflow processes. Alluvial sedimentary systems have an important economic value because of their capacity to host mineral resources. In the Hamersley Province, alluvial iron deposits (including the well-known detrital iron deposits and channel iron deposits) play an increasing role on the commodity market. Alluvial deposits exploration is challenging and generally involves geomorphologic and stratigraphic field studies, as well as expensive exploratory surface sampling and drilling. We applied a new surface processes modelling technique to investigate iron rich material, ie the erosion product of bedded iron formations -dispersion in the Hamersley Province. LECODE is a 3D-parallel surface processes forward modelling code designed to compute surface flow and solve erosion, transport and sedimentation on the geological time scale. The code offers new quantitative ways to better understand how sedimentary deposits develop in intra-continental and channel environments. Here we show that our integrated forward model is capable of opening a window to the construction of sedimentary architectures, including facies distribution, deposit thickness and development of heterogeneities such as mineral traps over the modelled domain. The model results represent 1 Ma of surface evolution and are validated through comparison to published paleovalleys map and known occurrences of iron ore deposits. This numerical modelling approach allows for the first time to track alluvial materials from source to sink through time, test existing geological models and faithfully reproduce the first order distribution of alluvial iron deposits in an area of interest. This work strongly suggests the presence of iron rich alluvial deposits reserves under cover, in unexplored detrital fans in the Fortescue Valley. This method, potentially coupled with sediment geochemistry and basin analyses studies, has the potential to maximise alluvial iron deposits exploration success, while reducing exploration cost and associated environmental impact.CITATION:Duclaux, G, Salles, T and Ramanaidou, E R, 2013. The successful development of industrial minerals projects requires an integrated, holistic understanding of the metallurgical and product performance test work in the context of the geological setting of the deposit and applied to mining, processing and marketing of saleable products. The product specifications provide the essential starting point for geometallurgical studies. A sound understanding of the desired product is needed to design and interpret a program of test work. Examples are provided from recent studies on bentonite and graphite deposits.For bentonite projects, the naïve testing of only the cation exchange capacity (CEC) as a measure of purity can lead to unexpected outcomes when the deposit is mined. The CEC attribute may remain the same, while other important properties such as pH and swelling index change markedly with depth, due to weathering and oxidation, leading to disappointing production outcomes.For graphite projects it is not enough to report only total graphitic carbon content (TGC). Knowledge is required of the in situ flake size and textures in addition to purity and flake size distribution of extracted graphite, which may all vary from one domain to another across the deposit. Such geometallurgical attributes of the ore will impact on the ‘basket price’ used to estimate the value of marketable parcels of expected product.Disclosure of such information must be considered part of fully informing the market. As with all new project developments, consideration of the JORC (2012) and VALMIN (2015) Codes requires disclosure of all material information. Hydraulic support instability (HSI) is one of the most common causes of disasters in underground coal mining, posing a threat to the safety of mine workers and normal operation of the equipment. It is prone to occur in fully-mechanized mining faces with a large mining height (FMMLMH), especially when the dip angle of the coal seam is large. The key to controlling HSI is to deduce its mechanism and employ effective control techniques. This paper focuses on the analysis of HSI types, the key parameters and techniques to control HSI in FMMLMH, the establishment of a model of HSI in FMMLMH, and a multi-parameter sensitivity mechanical model of different HSI forms in the no. 7219 longwall face in Xutuan Coal Mine, Huaibei Mining Group, by using sensitivity analysis . The results show that HSI mainly presents in three forms: hydraulic support gliding (HSG), hydraulic support tilting (HST), and hydraulic support tail twisting (HSTT). The occurrence of the above three forms depends mainly on support anti-instability capability. In the no. 7219 longwall face, HSG and HST are the main two forms of HSI. The dip angle of the working face and the friction coefficient between floor and hydraulic support are the sensitive parameters for HSG, while HST is strongly dependent on the dip angle of the working face and the friction coefficient between roof and hydraulic support. By the applications of measures such as the oblique layout of the working face, cutting the floor into a step pattern, moving the support under pressure, and raising the setting load, the support stability was controlled effectively.

In a previous paper the writer dealt -with the jasper bar formations and their relationship to the structural geology of older pre-Cambrian rocks in the goldfields districts of Western Australia (24). He has pointed out in this ahd other papers that jasper bars, or banded iron formations, banded hematite or ,magnetite quartzites, jaspilites and related banded ferruginous or non-ferruginous cherts, occur in abundan'ce in the Older Greenstone Series of Western Australia (22), (24), (26). They are considered to represent special forms of banded ferruginous sediments, and are usually fpund in the field interbedded with more or less metamorphosed pasaltic 01' andesitic lavas and tuffs, now amphibolites, together with occasional thin bands of normal pelitic sediments, which go to make up a large proportion of the Older Greenstones in thfs State (26).Great thicknesses of fiat-bedded ]:landed ferruginous cherts are also found associated with cherty' carbonate rocks; quartzites, shales and thin-bedded dolomite whicIi constit'ute the Nullagine (Pl'oterozoic) system in the northwest of Western Australia. In the Hamersley Range district these banded ferruginous chert beds are the hosts of important deposits of blue amphibole asbestos.In the paper mentioned above brief reference was> made to the importance, of geological structure in relation to economic geology, particularly in the goldfields regions of Western Australia, and it was shown that jasper bars may have an important role in the study of 'the structural geology of many of these regions. Of possibly more immediate economic importance is the part that these rocks play, both directly and indirectly, as host rocks for mineral deposits-the chief of Which are gold, iron ores, blue asbestos, and manganese ores. The blue asbestos bearing banded iron formations mentioned above are confined to the younger pre-Cambrian Nullagine formations. They have been described in detail elsewhere (23). In this paper it is proposed to discuss the economic geology of the jasper bars found in the older pre-Cambrian series.The jasper 'bars have in themselves little or no intrinsic value except perhaps some of the more highly coloured and banded varieties which may be utilised for ornamental and decorative purposes. Probably the best known of such varieties is the so-called "marble bar;" a belt of, strikingly coloured banded chert occurring just south and west of the famous town of that name (see Fig. 1t). This consists of a hard, very fine, even-grained rock with alternate individual stripes varying from the thickness of a sheet of paper up to an inch or more in width, and ranging in colour from clear white to yellow, from various shades of pink to brilliant...

Forecasting, particularly when applied to meaningful issues, is known irreverently as 'futurology'. There is quite a range of opinion ext.ant in the world when mineral resources are looked at. The opinions range from the doomsday view that there will be acute shortages of all essential commodities, to the optimistic outlook that new 'discoveries will prevent any possibility of shortages. The environment is, as yet, only studied locally and quite parochially; surprisingly there is little integration when considering the spatial atmosphere, the seas in depth and the earth's crust.

Mine fires and/or explosions continue to occur. While these are unusual events, they comprise emergency situations. Whenever one of these events occurs, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) responds with specially trained teams, mine fire experts, sophisticated scientific instrumentation, and trained instrument operators. In order to analyze mine air samples on-site, because time is of the essence, MSHA has a Mobile Gas Laboratory. The laboratory, which is stored near Pittsburgh, is totally self-contained. Sending air samples to a laboratory would take too long. Mine fire experts need the results of the latest analyses as soon as they are finished. The mobile laboratory is housed in the box of a diesel truck. Benches line both sides of the laboratory. Gas chromatographs are mounted on the benches. There is sufficient bench space for multiple bench top gas chromatographs. These instruments and their controllers are shock and vibration isolated to protect them during transit. The mobile laboratory can operate using on board diesel generators or line power. An uninterrupted power supply (UPS) supplies power to the instruments while switching from generator to line power or visa versa. Therefore, analysis of samples can proceed without interruption if a power failure would occur. In the rear of the mobile laboratory are racks that hold compressed gas cylinders. These cylinders contain carrier gas and compressed air. An air compressor is housed under the laboratory to operate the gas chromatograph actuators. Within several hours after arriving at a mine the instruments have stabilized and have been calibrated. The mobile laboratory is ready to begin analyzing air samples. The mobile laboratory has proved itself at many mine fires and explosions since its purchase.

1. Scope of project In South Australia, the Western Mining Corporation operates the underground copper and uranium mine Olympic Dam. The deposits concerned are enormous (approx. 570 million tons) and have been mined since 1988. At the end of 1996, Western Mining decided to increase the capacity of Olympic Dam from 85,000 t.p.a. to 200,000 t.p.a. Planning At this point, SIEMAG-GHH Mining Division was asked to carry out a study including the planning of the entire shaft hoisting operations and calculation of the investment and operating costs involved. With the assistance of Australian partners, the study was completed within a single month. The principal points of the study were as follows: ? Planning of the hoisting machinery for 1,375 tons per hour from the surge bin below ground to the discharge bunker above ground. ? Optimisation of the hoisting operation with regard to maximum availability and safety. ? Optimisation of the time schedule to minimise the financing costs of the investment. ? Statement of the investment and operating costs. ? Comparison of the technical data, design and availability of the planned machinery with reference plants. Construction of the plant Following acceptance of the study, the decision was taken within a few weeks to implement it. SIEMAG Transplan GmbH received the order to execute the entire shaft hoisting machinery on the basis of the study submitted. The decisive factors in placing the order were: ? Convincing study, adherence to schedule ? Reference to comparable plants elsewhere ? Reference with regard to availability.

This report describes the results and conclusions of the development and evaluation of a unique concept for a lightweight air powered drill tool for probe drilling in anthracite mines. A concept model of the lightweight air powered tool was constructed and evaluation testing conducted at the Kocher Coal Company Porter Tunnel Mine. The unique anchoring method proved to be extremely satisfactory and the overall light-weight air powered drill tool concept proved feasible. Based on the results of the concept model testing, two prototype production units were designed and manufactured. These prototype units proved to meet all of their design requirements of lightweight, portability, drilling controllability, structural integrity and miner acceptance. The need for a better bit and drill steel system, however, became evident during the testing program and recommendations are made for further investigation and development of a bit and drill steel system suitable for this application.

The richer, shallower sapphire deposits of the New England region of New South Wales which have been traditionally mined by the small miner are almost worked out. Larger mining and exploration companies are replacing the small miner and exploring for the primary source of sapphire or lower grade alluvial deposits.   Although in recent years considerable exploration effort has been directed at locating the primary source, commercial exploitation of sapphire is still restricted to the working of alluvial deposits.   If the Australian industry is to compete against Asian and African producers it must use cost effective exploration, mining) processing and marketing methods.

This Federal Bureau of Mines publication is a statistical analysis of all surface and underground coal mine fires reported in the United States from 1950 to 1977. Accounts of selected nonreportable fires and opinion data gathered via interviews with mine safety directors were separately analyzed. Both reported and nonreportable fires were analyzed by time trends, State, ignition source, burning substance, location in mine, equipment, detection, duration, injuries, fatalities, and successful extinguishing agents. It was found that the majority of all mine fires were electrical in origin. The equipment most frequently involved in underground fires was conveyor belts, and in surface fires, it was crushers and/or breakers. Underground fires occurred most often near the working face. Water and hand-portable extinguishers were the most common methods of extinguishment.

"Ultrafine grinding of minerals has been in wide spread use in the industrial mineral field for over 30 years. Within the last 10 years the metalliferous industry has shown interest in the ability to produce ultrafine particles, as chemical, physio-chemical and physical separation processes have advanced to be able to treat ultrafine metalliferous particles. Also as the primary mineral deposits are depleted, new more difficult deposits must be mined. Existing operations are also looking to maximize economic return from existing deposits, requiring new thinking and technologies.The recent development of industrially proven and cost efficient technologies for ultrafine grinding has opened up another processing option for the treatment of finegrained metalliferous and refractory gold ores. The current commercial designs are variations of stirred mills used in the industrial minerals sector for the past 30 years. For the purposes of this paper ultrafine grinding is considered to be P80 of less than 15 microns.Attrition milling to fine grind sizes presents some challenging issues relating to scale-up including the dearth of information on the quantitative impact of feed and operating conditions, as well as the precise and accurate measurement of particle size distributions. Two examples from recent installations will be analyzed including Thalanga Copper and Century Zinc Mines. Both have diverse grind size targets for the SMD, yet both have realized significant metallurgical gains."
