The total number of petroleum refineries in the United States continued to decline during 1950, and according to the Bureau of Mines annual refinery capacity survey there were 357 refineries January 1, 1951, compared with 367 a year ago. The total throughput capacity increased 267,344 barrels daily during the year to 6,963,644 barrels daily as of January 1, 1951, continuing the trend of the past several years to increase the throughput capacity of the refineries and decrease the number of plants. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil increased during 1950 from 18,246 barrels daily to 19,506. The Indiana-Illinois refinery district accounted for 110,175 barrels, or 41 percent of the total crude-oil capacity increase, the Oklahoma-Kansas district, 17 percent, the California district, 14 percent, the East Coast district, 13 percent, and the Louisiana Gulf Coast district, 12 percent. Slight declines ill crude-oil capacity were reported in the Texas Inland, Texas Gulf Coast, New Mexico, And Appalachian refinery districts. The 160,100 barrels of additional crude-oil capacity that was building January 1, 1951, represents an increase of 10 percent over the year earlier figure. The only completely new refinery listed as under construct ion at the beginning of 1951 is located at Superior, Wisconsin. Other new construction involves enlargement of existing refineries. Plans for at least five additional new refineries are under consideration, and construction is expected to begin during the current year.

The object of the investigation was to study the qualitative and quantitative relations between the parameters of the primary blast and fragmentation to enable the planning of an economically efficient degree of disintegration with optimum utilisation of the blast energy. The 30th annual short course ?Grouting Fundamentals and Current Practice? was held at the Colorado School of Mines, June 22-26, 2009. The field demonstration portion of the course was conducted June 25, at Hayward Baker, Inc.?s yard in Broomfield, CO. The full-scale field demonstration annually presents many different types of drilling equipment being operated as well as various grouting methods being performed under different field conditions. As part of the field demonstration, the class is shown the proportioning, mixing, testing and injection of various cement grout mixes into sand columns under controlled and measured conditions. These sand column demonstrations have been conducted under controlled and measured conditions each year since 1999 as part of the short course. The sand column demonstrations were conducted prior to 1999, but with less quality control and minimal record keeping of the proportioning, mixing, testing, injection pressures and the final permeation results. The goal of the sand column demonstration is to show the students the effect of the water cement ratio and the use of admixture as well as the fineness of the cement, portland versus ultrafine, used has on the engineering properties of the grout and the grout?s vertical permeation through the sand. Test results for the demonstrations conducted in 1999 and for two separate demonstrations, one at the grout course and one at Geo Denver, conducted in 2000 were published in the 2001 proceedings of the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) (Henn et al. 2001). The test results for the 2002 and the 2003 demonstrations were published in the 2005 proceeding of the RETC (Henn et al. 2005).

Pulverized Fuel Combustion The apparatus shown in the illustration is a complete equipment f r supplying coal to boiler and metallurgical furnaces, cement and lime kilns, dryers, and to all furnaces requiring a temperature and quality of fame under prompt and easy control. It is claimed that the Aero Pulverizer makes practicable the highest efficiency obtainable from burning coal. It makes coal burn like a gas, a flame, the physical and chemical character of which is regulable- a flame that may be elongated or shortened, thus placing the zone of highest temperature where needed- a flame that may be made oxidizing, reducing, or neutral, as occasion may require. The coal is burned as pulverized, and there is no storage of the powder with its attendant hazard. Artificial drying before pulverizing is not necessary if the coal supply be sheltered from rain and snow. Where the Aero is used, it is wholly a furnace question whether a dryer should be installed; it is not at all a pulverizing or storage question. Labor is reduced to a minimum. Slack coal at low cost yields its last B.T.U.

A survey of 120 recent NI 43-101 technical reports was conducted to evaluate the current state of practice regarding resource classification techniques. The most common classification techniques are based on search neighbourhoods (50% of recent reports), drill-hole spacing (30% of recent reports), and/or kriging variance (6% of recent reports). Two new techniques are proposed. The first is based on kriging variance and involves removing one or more drill-holes with the highest weights while performing kriging and using the resultant kriging variance for classification. This technique has the advantages of variance-based techniques and reduces artifacts. The second technique is based on conditional simulation and uses a moving window approach for classification at the desired selective mining unit resolution based on larger production volume criteria. This technique has the advantage of accounting for heteroscedasticity, which is a common characteristic in mineral deposits, and also reduces artifacts since a production volume scale is considered for the actual classification. The drill-hole spacing, search neighborhood, kriging variance, and simulation-based techniques are described and compared for 2D and 3D examples with regular and irregular drilling patterns to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

With both unit costs per meter and average depth of drilling constantly increasing, there is a strong incentive to maximize the information acquired from drill holes, and then to make this information accessible to the geological staff. The larger the drilling project, the more advantageous computerization of data is over manual methods. The conversion to computer-readable form and the verification of large amounts of drill-hole data can be a substantial data processing task, but once accomplished, the benefits in increased accuracy and speed of interpretation will compensate for the time and effort spent in the work. For an exploration project progressing towards a preliminary feasibility study, about half of both the time and costs for all computer work of the entire feasibility study are devoted to drill-hole data base organization, and maintenance. Once drill-hole results are quantified and verified to be correct, they are immediately accessible and are not subject to further transcription or reinterpretation of errors. To obtain maximum benefits from computer utilization in this area, the drill-hole data base should be set up along with availability of the first data. For some companies, this may initially comprise a large number of purely speculative drill holes on a spacing of perhaps 1 or 2 km. Although few of these drill holes may encounter economic material, thought should be given, at this time, to the variables which will be logged when such material is found. In this way, it should be possible to set up a consistent format into which all future drill-hole information will readily be accommodated. This format may even be carried over into the data base requirements for an operating property.

Very few of those occupied in pursuits other than mining have any conception of the extent of boring operations that have been carried out on the gold and coal fields of Victoria, or of the valuable and definite knowledge obtainable by such means. The subject comprises various branches, which it will be necessary to describe in detail. The three main divisions are The Administrative, which includes all financial work and general management. The Professional, dealing with topographical and geological work necessary before any scheme of boring can be laid out, the preparation of plans, the inspection of cores obtained from bore holes, the examination of diamonds, etc. The Mechanical Branch, dealing with the drilling machinery, setting of diamonds, maintenance of stores, etc. In 1877, the Goverpment of Victoria decided to assist in prospecting the mineral resources of the colony by the aid of diamond drill boring, and for that purpose, a vote of £5,000 was passed, with which were purchased three diamond dulls, an American type being adopted.

"In 2002, Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB released the new rig control system (RCS) technology for all of its drill rig types. RCS opened the way for a new generation of computerized drill rigs based on modern, standard PC-computer technology. Drilling accuracy, information logging, reduction in manpower in some types, and serviceability have all taken a quantum leap forward when compared with previous generations of drill rigs. RCS is modularized and distributed by means of CAN-bus technology. This technology, which is well proven in automobile applications, forms the communication backbone of the rig. The modularity facilitates almost unlimited possibilities for the expansion and adaptation of drill rig functions."

The Turin metro alluvium soil is mainly made of large boulders, cobbles and gravel , few sand and almost no fines. This grain size curve is out of the range of application for EPB and Slurry TBMs. In order to bore 5 of the total 7,5 kms of Line 1 tunnel, two specially designed Lovat EPB TBMs were utilised in combination with a systematic non structural pre-grouting of a small volume rectangular slab just above the tunnel section. The same pre-grouting was not however applicable for lack of access on surface in some sections of the remaining 2,5 km of tunnel that had to be bored below important buildings/structures, with under ground water pressure up to 1,5 bar, with curves radius of 180 m only. For these more critical sections it was necessary to study and implement a new technical solution and improve the capacity of the TBM to work efficiently in EPB mode even in this unsuitable ground and overall conditions. After months of studies the selected and adopted solution has been to inject inside the cutterhead chamber, in addition to the almost standard foams & polymers additive mixes, a suspension of limestone powders. This with the scope of compensating the lack of fines of the natural ground with rock powders.

High horizontal stresses and shear failure have been considered the major reasons that cause entry roof failure and falls for underground mining. Therefore, reorientation of the current mining systems or layouts or using angular crosscuts in mains or gate entries becomes more popular if a greater than normal horizontal stress is measured. However, reorientation of the current mining systems or layouts is always expensive and use of the angular crosscuts may weaken the pillar structure at corners. Therefore, cautions must be taken before any decision related to reorientation of the current mining systems or layouts or use of angular crosscuts is going to be made. In order to prevent entry roof failure and falls, the following two issues must be carefully examined and fully understood: 1. Which one, shear stress or tensile stress, is going to be blamed for entry roof failure? 2. Which one, horizontal stress, vertical stress, or local geological weakness plays a major role in entry roof failure and falls? This paper analyzes the mechanisms of entry roof failure and falls for underground mining in general examines the roof fall history at Springvale Colliery, and proposes the means of preventing roof failure and controlling roof falls for Spingvale Colliery in particular.

This report describes the initial phase of Bureau of Mines research in the hydraulic mining of bituminous coal. The mining site and equipment are described, and the test procedures and results obtained with a bar-mounted monitor are given. Tests showed that hard Pittsburgh-bed coal can be mined hydraulically from a solid face at water pressures of 4,000 pounds per square inch.4 Coal was penetrated to a depth of 4 feet in 20 seconds with 225 gallons of water per minute coming from a 3/8-inch nozzle at 4,000 pounds per square inch pressure. Some difficulty was encountered in cutting the binders occurring in the coal; it was not possible Lu penetrate directly the overlying draw slate.

Hainan Province (Hainan Island) in South China hosts numerous Mo-polymetallic ore deposits that are genetically related to Cretaceous granitoid intrusions. Laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) zircon U-Pb dating and molybdenite Re-Os dating reveal three metallogenic episodes: the late Early Cretaceous (ca 112 Ma), the late Early to Late Cretaceous (ca 95–106 Ma) and the Late Cretaceous (ca 72–89 Ma). The third mineralising episode might represent the youngest Mo mineralising event in East China. Results from this study demonstrate that Mo mineralisation on Hainan Island occurred under an extensional setting that was prevailing in the late Mesozoic (ca 180–67 Ma) in South China, which was likely due to the slab rollback of the subducted palaeo-Pacific plate beneath the South China continent.CITATION:Xu, D R, Hu, G C, Wu, C J, Fu, Y R and Chen, H, 2015. Neste trabalho são apresentados os impactos físicos e mecânicos da reciclagem de insumos refratários compostos por óxidos de magnésio ligado ao carbono, visando à reutilização destes como matéria prima para a confecção de novos tijolos. Os resíduos refratários substituíram, na formulação proposta, 100% massa de MgO utilizado nestes tijolos. O estudo envolveu a confecção dos novos tijolos e a realização de ensaios de caracterização dos tijolos produzidos, através de ensaios físicos. Os resultados mostraram uma porosidade final elevada na condição sem cura, resultando em valores de densidade e resistência inferiores aos dos tijolos produzidos com matérias-primas virgens.

El presente texto señala la aplicación del sistema de gestión de demanda y consumo de energía eléctrica en la fundición de Southern Perú. El sistema está compuesto por un módulo predictor de demanda eléctrica y un módulo de simulación del sistema eléctrico de la planta. El primero, se construyó utilizando redes neuronales con algoritmos de aprendizaje backpropagation, capaz de pronosticar la evolución horaria de la demanda eléctrica con un porcentaje de error cercano. Mientras que el segundo está basado en técnicas de estimación paramétrica, redes neuronales y ecuaciones matemáticas obtenidas por regresión estadística, que simula el comportamiento del sistema de energía eléctrica de la fundición. En ese sentido, los módulos facilitan una adecuada planificación, ya que permiten conocer el comportamiento de la demanda horaria y los patrones de consumo de la planta, incluyendo los componentes de la facturación. Así como las deficiencias energéticas y oportunidades de mejora, sobre la base del análisis de la información acerca de los equipos, procesos y planes de producción, así como programas de mantenimiento.

A method is described whereby the behavior of the front is approximated when gas is injected into a thick reservoir having reasonably homogeneous properties. The method is applied to the Abqaiq field of Saudi Arabia. The producing member is the Arab-D, a high-permeability calcarenite which has no continuous betlding planes. Field performance indicates the injected gas to be partially miscible with the reservoir oil because gas volume factors experienced are lower than those predicted by the gas law. Eqlrilibril~m calculations confirnz ihis and also show that the volume factor may vary appreciably, depending on the relative quantities of oil and gas in contact in the reservoir; consequently, volutnetric balances are made for the purpose of determining the behavior of the gas volume factor during injection history. The effect of gravity segregation on position and shape of the gas front is approximated by dividing the producing section into three zones vertically and tracing the movement of the average interface in each zone, with counterflow of oil and gas taking place betweell zones behind the front. This results in a gas front that advances more rapidly along the top of [he formation than along the base, producing an "umbrella" effect in cross section that becomes more pronounced as the front progresses. The calculations cover the gas-injection period of Abqaiq field history through 1958, and the position of the gas front is plotted at one-year intervals. Finally, some comparisotls between the calcrlated fronial position and the gas-oil contact as Measured by neutron logs are made. INTRODUCTION Fig. 1 is a structure contour map of the Abqaiq field. For analytical purpcses, the field has been divided into two areas designated A and B, as shown on the map. Gas injection into Area A was begun in early 1954 into two wells located near the crest of the structure on the north-south axis of the anticline. During the period covered by this paper, the average injection rate has been 122 MMscf/D with a maximum sustained rate of 160 MMscf/D. The reservoir pressure has been maintained at 2,450 psig since start of gas injection. The reservoir originally was undersaturated but, prior to pressure maintenance, the pressure was drawn below the bubble point in most of the Area A section, creating an in-place free-gas saturation of 8 per cent at the crest of the structure. The average critical gas saturation is 13 per cent established by laboratcry core tests. That the entire reservoir remained below critical gas saturation prior to gas injection is borne out by the fact that none of the crestal wells have exhibited high gas-oil ratios during production history. The Area A reservoir is a carbonate section about 200-ft thick having average porosity and permeability of the order of 22 per cent and 500 md, respectively. [Rock bursts are phenomena associated with mining operations, particularly with deep mining, although they occur throughout a wide rump, of depth, from 600 feel downward. The intensity is usually in direct proportion to the depth, varying from a loosening and sloughing off to a violent rupture, giving rise to the term, "explosive rock." The more or less violent breaking of rock in mine working, tins been variously designated as " flaking," "pressure hoists," "strain bursts," "bumps," "quakes," and "air blasts," which indicate opinions as to cause and effect. The term "air blast" lots probably beat most widely used, and naturally so, as a more or less rapid movement of air often accompanying the more violent phenomena of rock failure. Furthermore, there is an implied if not definitely expressed degree of magnitude in the action designited by a given term and in the cause and character of the action. For example. flaking, pressure bursts, and quakes are terms ranged to indicate action of increasing magnitude; and pressure bursts, strain bursts. bumps, and quakes are ranged according to the cause and character of the action.]

This paper is the third of a series of three on placer mining in the western United States. The first paper4 discusses the history of placer mining in the Western States and the production of placer gold, geology of placer deposits, location of placer claims on public lands, sampling and estimation of gold placers, and classification of placer-mining methods, together with hand-shoveling and ground-sluicing. The second papers deals with hydraulicking, sluice boxes and riffles, recovery of gold and platinum from placer concentrates, treatment of amalgam, and marketing of placer gold. The discussion of sluice boxes and subsequent subjects in the second paper applies to all forms of placer mining. The present paper treats of dredging and other forms of mechanical handling of placer gravels, and drift mining.

Demolition blasting next to an active railroad can be very challenging because of track safety, blasting vibrations, potential track fouling by blast debris, and short work windows on a live track. Recently, in eastern Washington, one of the major railroad companies has been aggressively constructing a second main track to accommodate the expected increase in rail traffic of natural resource products. To accommodate construction of the second line, the railroad company used blasting demolition techniques to remove an old railroad trestle pier on the Milwaukee Road that was in the footprint of the new track bed. The trestle bridged the present rail line and flanked the track with two massive 550-ton (499 tonne) twin-columned steel reinforced concrete piers. The railroad contracted with a specialized contractor to remove the south pier using blasting demolition techniques. The blasting design presented the following challenges: blasting during live track conditions and short work windows; designing a V-notch blast pattern to ensure the pier fell away from the live track; drilling, loading, and timing of the shot; maintaining blasting vibrations at the track below 4 in./sec (102 mm/sec); maintaining ambient overpressure noise below 133 dB; control of fly rock and debris; and track protection and emergency debris removal plan.

Keywords: MgO-MgR2O3 refractory, SO2-containing gases, chemical attack The reaction mechanisms occurring when MgO-MgR2O3 refractories are exposed to SO2-containing gas atmospheres were examined. The study examined the characteristic structures of magnesite-chrome, chrome-magnesite and magnesite refractories exposed to SO2-O2 gas mixture at temperatures of 700°C to 1350°C. The phase characterization was conducted with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results show that the physical characteristics of the refractory matrix along the grain boundaries are important refractory features during chemical attack from SO2-containing gas. Upon heating in SO2-containing gas, the changes in phase-chemical compositions and accompanying grain growth causes loosening of the structure and the pore volume promotes gas diffusion. The chemical reactions that occur form stable sulfate compounds identified as MgSO4, CaSO4 and CaMg3(SO4)4, and lead to disintegration of various phase structures and consequently erosion of the refractory. In conclusion, the reaction mechanisms in MgO-MgR2O3 refractories exposed to SO2-containing gases progress through a combination of structural disintegration and chemical attack.

In response to the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, mandatory noise standards have been developed that specify time-noise limits of mine personnel exposure. Most affected by elevated noise levels is the pneumatic roof bolter operator, both in terms of levels near or in excess of 115 dbA and in terms of length of exposure. Therefore, the principal emphasis of this Bureau of Mines report is on pneumatic drill noise control. It is not the intent of this report to suggest any drill redesign; instead, methods are suggested to reduce the noise level by complementing existing machines. An integral muffler system and a separate muffler system were tested in an attempt to lower pneurnaric drill noise levels. Pneumatic drills, when new, operate at about 115 dbA when drilling in sandstone. Using the drill muffler systems, it was possible to decrease the noise level of a 115 -dbA s rope drill to approximately 100 dbA.
